A note from our CEO Dear Practice Owners and Leaders, Hello! My name is Brent Mack, and I am the CEO of Golden Bear Therapy Partners (GBTP).

Throughout this holiday season, we are reminded of the tremendous impact that physical therapy has had on so many patients' lives. It has been a few years since I have treated patients myself, but I often hear the emotional stories from those who have received physical therapy and how it has changed their lives. One of the best parts of my job is to be the recipient of patient letters and feedback and to represent the many clinicians we have within GB Therapy Partners.

Service is one of the unique attributes that make GBTP special. Our mission is to provide clinicians with the resources, support, and knowledge needed so that they can focus on what's important – remarkable patient experiences and outcomes.

We have created an environment where your voice is heard so we can better serve you. We are committed to helping all our clinicians excel in providing the best care they can so they may grow within the organization both clinically and on a managerial/leadership track. We accomplish this by providing excellent career development, mentorship, and training opportunities. Having bigger company resources but maintaining a small “mom and pop” clinical feel is what being part of GB Therapy Partners is all about.

I originally connected with Golden Bear Physical Therapy in January of 2020.

Discussions about a partnership were progressing very well, when suddenly Covid hit. This was a stressful time for all of us on many different levels, but one of my concerns was that the work I had put into solidifying a transition strategy for our practice would fall apart.

Given this crisis, we needed to move a bit slower with the acquisition. During this delay of the formal partnership, Golden Bear went above and beyond to communicate with and support

Does Telehealth have a Place in Physical Therapy?

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a tremendous impact on healthcare. As intensive care units filled with COVID patients, the population put non-emergent care – such as wellness checks and physical therapy – on the back burner. Many providers turned to telehealth in order to provide care while minimizing risk and maximizing safety.

With vaccine access returning us to a state resembling normalcy, telehealth is still relevant for today’s physical therapist. Although some patients and physical therapists may tend to see remote PT as counterintuitive for such “hands-on” therapy, PT via telehealth can be effective and achievable with minimal cost to the provider.

Trends in Telehealth PT The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) is a strong proponent of telehealth in physical therapy. The group encourages physical therapists to use their best judgment when working with patients through telehealth, including recognizing when to see a patient face-to-face.

Many clinicians have begun offering initial visits via telehealth. This practice is useful when the first session will be more of a “getting to know you” visit rather than actual therapy. When time and distance are barriers, it may make sense to conduct the initial visit virtually.

Another trend to consider is nonreal-time therapy. In other words, telehealth PT does not always have to be delivered live. You may find it helpful to record video instructions for a patient to view and review at their convenience.

Data security is necessarily a huge factor in the delivery of any sort of telehealth. Interacting with a patient virtually does not absolve clinicians of their HIPAA and privacy responsibilities. They’ll need to ensure that any apps or software being used meets the legal

requirements for encryption and security.

A final trend concerns reaching more patients through telehealth than is possible in person. If you are a compact privilege holder, you may provide PT services to a patient in a remote state through telehealth.

This practice can allow you to gain patients from beyond your local region. Be sure to check the telehealth rules in both your state and the patient’s state to ensure you’re in compliance.

Payment

Reimbursement discussions around physical therapy and Telehealth are constantly changing and vary from insurance plan to insurance plan. If you plan on implementing Telehealth, check with the individual insurance company to understand payment rules and regulations to ensure you are compliant with their standards.

In Conclusion Whether to avoid potential exposures during a pandemic or simply for patient convenience, telehealth PT can be useful and practical for patients and physical therapists alike. A lot of practices

already have the infrastructure in place to establish telehealth services, but offering telehealth does require due diligence. Check the APTA’s recommendations and state regulations and you’ll be well on your way to serving your patients remotely.

A note from our CCO Inspiring Growth Through Leadership, Innovation, & Education

By Dr. Jennifer Allen Chief Clinical Officer Golden Bear Therapy Partners Over a year ago, I accepted the position of Chief Clinical Officer for Golden Bear Therapy Partners.

What I love about the position is the collaborative nature of the role, and the ability to work across company functions and our partner brands to create positive changes that move us closer to our personal, professional, and company goals. I report directly to our Chief Executive officer Brent Mack and my responsibilities include oversight of service lines, marketing & sales, employee & patient engagement, and clinician leadership & educational development.

As a physical therapist myself, and a former practice co-founder and CEO (Bodycentral PT), I understand the challenges we face as clinicians. I know what it takes to build a practice from the ground up, and the passion, blood, sweat and tears that go into growing a business. I have been a champion for this great profession of ours for over 27 years, watching us go from a near 100% physician referral model to today's models of direct access in all 50 states.

Through the advent of Golden Bear University, we have been able to provide education, develop specialist level physical therapists, add new service lines for our partners, and to work to bring rehabilitation professionals to the forefront of healthcare. I believe we exist as a primary access point for neuro-musculoskeletal issues, and we need to advocate on behalf of our profession (and patients), to the public, the healthcare community, payers, employers, and regulatory groups.

What I've learned over 20 years of practice ownership is that true leadership exists to provide opportunity and growth for the teams it supports while maintaining and championing the mission and vision that connects them. Success Stories

Ethan Paster & Bodycentral Ethan Paster is the Director of Sports Medicine at Bodycentral and the manager of the Cortaro clinic. With Golden Bear, he has developed a 2-day concussion course to empower others with the concussion evaluation and treatment process.

I started at the Bodycentral residency program about five years ago. I knew I wanted to do a sports residency out of school, and I have been here ever since.

Throughout the years, I have continued to progress and learn.

Post-residency, I became the Head of Concussion Management for Bodycentral and the manager for the Cortaro clinic. Then, I became Regional Manager in addition to those two duties.

When we partnered with Golden Bear, I switched from Regional Manager to the Director of Sports Medicine. I was super glad about this change since it was something I had wanted. I run all

of our sports outreach, which means I set up contracts with teams and brands and organize the volunteers. In addition, I am a mentor for our residency program and run the concussion program.

I started teaching the concussion class at the Bodycentral residency about five years ago. Each year, I made the program longer and more in-depth. I always hoped that it would eventually become a course. When Golden Bear approached me to create a concussion course, I started to do the work to make my program even more comprehensive.

My main focus is to make clinicians comfortable with concussions. I want them to know what to look for when evaluating for deficits, while feeling confident treating those deficits. Most cases are complex and individual, so the idea is to give lots of different treatment options. Treating a concussion can be scary, so my goal is to make everything simpler and make clinicians more confident.

I’ve put in a ton of work into the course, and Golden Bear has been excited about the potential.

I want to teach it in as many places as will have me.

Tyler Goslinga

“Tyler has been diligent and professional in working with studentathletes. His attention to detail has assisted our athletic department in providing a safe experience on the field of play.”

Kevin Tameling, the Athletic Director of Ripon Christian Tyler Goslinga is a Physical Therapist and the Clinic Manager at Golden Bear’s Ripon clinic.

Outside of his operational work, he works with the Ripon Christian High School Football Team as the unofficial Team Physical Therapist. With the help of Golden Bear, he hopes to establish a community-wide concussion program for small towns and enhance sports-injury prevention programs for high school and college athletes.

One of my goals when joining Golden Bear in March was to create a community-wide concussion program. When I graduated from UOP in 2016, I started helping out with the Ripon Christian football team.

My main role has been troubleshooting all the bumps and bruises that happen during the game. I enjoy doing sideline sports medicine and I became interested in concussions.

Golden Bear provided me with a continuing education stipend, which allowed me to focus on my concussion training. Because of this, I was able to take the Complete Concussion Management Incorporated (CCMI) course. This course was

more in-depth than most other concussion programs. In addition to the basics, I got to dive into cutting-edge research on recovery and care.

My vision is to create a gold standard concussion care program in the Central Valley.

There is a huge gap in care with sports-related concussions and a lack of treatment options. I care about the treatment of concussions and believe most people get the minimum regarding rehab. In addition, the importance of diet, sleep, and nutrition is often not discussed but plays a large part in recovery from a concussion. Eventually, I hope to expand this program to the community and help a

broader population of people who experience concussions.

I also hope to get more involved with sports injury prevention in high school and college athletes in the future. I want to create arm care programs for overhead athletes, ACL prevention and recovery programs, creating a hybrid between training and physical therapy. As physical therapists, we tend to see athletes in the chronic stage of pain. Many athletes stop rehab too soon and never return to athletic tasks while in physical therapy, causing long-term discomfort. With the help of Golden Bear, I hope to take these programs as far as I can.

OPTM & SASCC Giving Back OPTM has been a long time, amazing partner of SASCC and has continued to help put together successful events, classes, and social groups for older adults in our community.

When we came up with the idea of a virtual walkathon it was only fitting to ask Fabrice and his team to help put it together. OPTM participated in many planning meetings to help put all the ideas together to form a great community wide event.

SASCC Walks was designed to bring awareness to the

needs of older adults and provide resources and solutions. OPTM team graciously worked with us on a series of 4 emails to SASCC Walks participants on the physical benefits of walking, safety tips, social benefits of walking, and walking footwear recommendations.

In addition to helping the

planning team and providing participants with helpful tips and resources to stay healthy, OPTM put together their own team to participate in our walkathon fundraiser and helped advertise with flyers all over the Saratoga OPTM location. Together they raised $1,005 and walked 1,600 miles!

Overall, SASCC was able to raise over $38,000 to keep providing resources and services to older adults in surrounding communities; the support and partnership with OPTM was instrumental in exceeding expectations for this event.
