THE MAGIC WORDS
MA IS A JAPANESE CONCEPT OF NEGATIVE SPACE THAT RELATES TO ALL ASPECTS OF LIFE. RATHER THAN AN ABSENCE, MA IS A GAP IN PERCEPTION THAT ALLOWS FOR DIFFUSE THOUGHT.

THE INTERVAL CREATED—WHETHER IN THE MIND OR THE PHYSICAL REALM—IS A REGENERATIVE PAUSE .
WITHIN THIS SPACE, A BREAK IN THE COMPOSITION OF OUR ACTIVE MINDS CAN EXIST, DEEPENING OUR AWARENESS OF WHAT IS AROUND US.

Laura Jane Petelko is an established Canadian photographer whose career spans over 25 years and has captivated audiences and collectors worldwide. She began her career as a master printer, collaborating with noted artists like Harmony Korine, Kelly Wood, Roy Arden, and Ed Rusche, and was represented by Vancouver’s Third Avenue Gallery.
After relocating to Toronto, Petelko developed a distinctive body of work known for its emotive intimacy and unique in-camera abstraction. When faced with a prognosis of possible blindness, she embraced a technique that distills her images to their essential emotional core, redefining conventional expectations of clarity and detail in photography. Her work has been featured internationally in PARK Magazine, The Art Newspaper, Paper Magazine, amongst others, and presented at prestigious venues like Christie’s (ahead of Eye of the Collector) and Photo London. Exhibited extensively across Canada, the U.S., and the UK, Petelko’s art has garnered interest from collectors and gallerists alike.
