‘Close Looking’ The Essential Work of Georgia Moors An encounter with the work of Georgia Moors is a journey from astonishing technical achievement to a deep emotional engagement. Look at this pencilled flower. Or this inked seed-head. Look at the impossible, miraculous, detail, caught by the hand of this most precise observer. Here is reality, rendered on paper and canvas with pure objectivity. Here is life. But the more time one spends with Moors’ work, the more one sees that it is more than life. No camera lens could see this sharply, hold this precise a focus. Every millimetre of a petal, every graze and curve of a stem, is seen and considered. The artist pushes through realism by looking harder and closer. In so doing, her eye elevates detail into poetry.
Just as the old masters were never wrong about suffering, so Moors is never wrong about the natural world. She sees it so unflinchingly and looks so closely, that the work which emerges is beyond re-creation, it is the inspired generation of something new. One is reminded of earlier artists’ attempts to recreate the world on canvas through movements like realism and photorealism. But Moors is not recreating life... she is capturing the spark of life. Although technically astonishing, her work is never cold. It blooms with joy. Colour, texture, the intricate dance between one element and another. There is humility and quiet attention here but there is also delight. This artist looks and marvels and then celebrates. Her work is a hymn to nature but also to human creativity and diligence, to the slow, painstaking revelation of these marks.
In an imperilled age, this astonishing close reading of the natural world and celebration of its beauty and variety feels vital, urgent. When we look at a Moors painting or drawing, we see more than the subject, we see why the subject has been chosen, why it matters. We are placed as living things in the context of other living things and in this sense, her work is romantic, hopeful and utterly essential. - Ben Power, Sept 2026
