No.1 Ireland is the largest exporter in Europe of powdered infant formula
16% of Europe’s Infant Formula requirement is sourced in Ireland
IRELAND DAIRY STORY Ireland, a small island in Northwest Europe, is a world leader in quality food production. Our mild temperate climate and pure natural environment provide ideal conditions for producing some of the best milk in the world. Ireland has developed an international reputation for producing high quality milk due to our natural grass based production system and small dairy herd sizes.
WORLD CLASS QUALITY Ireland’s reputation for pure and safe dairy ingredients has led to some of the world’s leading infant formula manufacturers setting up their operations here. Today, Ireland has been ranked as the largest exporter of powdered infant formula in Europe and over 16% of Europe’s Infant Formula requirement is sourced in Ireland. With the end of the European milk quota system in 2015, Ireland’s pure environment ensures that it is well positioned to sustainably increase dairy production volumes to satisfy global demand for high quality dairy products.
03
230 Days Outdoor Grazing*
GRASS-FED Our temperate climate, influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, ensures mild winters and lots of rain. This helps produce lush and nutritious green grass, which grows for longer than in other dairy producing countries. Ireland’s geographic location also helps ensure we have one of the cleanest air quality indexes in Europe. This pure and natural environment is perfect for producing great dairy products – the way nature intended. Irish cows are all grass-fed.
They graze in open pasture, with fresh clean air throughout the year. Grass-fed cows are healthier cows as they produce milk closer to their natural output. Also, Ireland’s average herd size is much smaller than other dairy producing nations – at less than 100 cows – so animal welfare remains a top priority at farm level. These natural advantages and expert care have helped Ireland become one of the foremost milk producers in the world.
Milk and dairy foods contain a unique matrix of nutrients. It is recommended to consume milk and dairy foods as part of a healthy balanced diet. Compared to non grass fed milk, grass fed milk has higher concentrations of certain nutrients, including conjugated linoleic acids, an optimal omega 3/omega 6 ratio and beta carotene.

ORIGIN GREEN
Like no other dairy company, worldwide.
- Carbon Reduction
T E T R A PA C K A G I N G
Glanbia Ireland is a founding member of Origin Green, the sustainability development programme initiated by the Irish Food Board, Bord Bia. This includes the Sustainable Dairy Assurance Scheme (SDAS), which is the first national dairy audit scheme of its kind anywhere in the world – independently auditing, recording and monitoring sustainability credentials of every dairy farm across the country.
07
To help prepare our milk suppliers to meet the SDAS standards, our expert milk advisory team works closely with them on milk quality, sustainability and farm development as well as planning for the future in terms of finances, expansion and succession planning.
This has led to the launch of our Open Source® Sustainability and Quality Assurance code. In 2021, Glanbia Ireland have identified 5 strategic areas within our strategy which will help us to build on our solid foundation whilst creating structure and shape for our ambitious future plans:
- Regenerative Agriculture - Natural Nutrition - Circular Economy - Responsible Working Combined with Ireland’s natural environment, this meticulous approach to sustainability sets us apart from other dairy companies internationally. Glanbia Ireland is focused on ensuring that all milk suppliers are independently audited under the Open Source code.
SUSTAINABILIT Y
ORIGIN GREEN T E T R A PA C K A G I N G
Origin Green is Ireland’s pioneering food and drink sustainability programme, operating on a national scale, uniting government, the private sector and the full supply chain from farmers to food producers and right through to the foodservice and retail sectors. The programme is the worlds’ only national food and drink sustainability programme , and enables the industry to set and achieve measurable sustainability targets that respect the environment and serve local communities more effectively.
GLANBIA IRELAND AWARDED GOLD MEMBERSHIP 2020
Origin Green members include farmers and food businesses such as food and beverage manufactures, retailers and foodservice operators.
Sustainable Farming Open Source® is our sustainability and quality assurance programme. It is our blueprint for quality dairy production, designed to sustainably release the value of Ireland’s low cost, rain nourished, grass fed milk production system for clean, safe, high quality dairy ingredients.
THE AMBITION The overall ambition of the Origin Green programme is that Irish food and drink is the first choice globally because it is trusted as sustainably produced by people who care. The programme aims to have farms and food and drink manufacturing businesses throughout Ireland sign up to the sustainability agenda, making measurable commitments to producing in a sustainable manner, with progress independently assessed and verified. Realising that no one country, sector or individual business can solely lead the move towards global sustainable production, Origin Green is committed to working with both domestic and international partners to improve performance through collaboration.
In 2020, Glanbia Ireland was among the first companies to achieve Gold Status Origin Green Membership. There are currently 324 Origin Green members and Gold Status was awarded to just 26 of those involved. Here at Glanbia Ireland, we strive to lead the field in sustainability across our business; from our farms to our factories and our global export model.
OUR KEY SUSTAINABILITY COMMITMENTS
We support our farmers’ sustainability work with a team of Milk Quality and Sustainability Managers who underpin the Open Source programme and assist milk suppliers to meet the SDAS standards. Because of the importance of soil health, we have developed efficient Nutrient Management Plans in conjunction with our farmers. These plans optimise grass production, which helps to nurture the healthiest herds and produce the highest quality milk. Animal welfare is paramount to us and we are the only dairy ingredients company in the world to commission independent, third party animal welfare verification, this includes our own in house veterinarian and animal welfare programmes.
Supply Chain We are continually evaluating and developing our methods to make our supply chain as efficient, cost effective and environmentally friendly as possible. One of the areas we have both maximised productivity and minimised emissions in is across our fully owned fleet of milk tankers. Collection routes have been optimised and larger tankers are being used to reduce the total number of vehicles on the road. Our work to promote the sustainable transit of products doesn’t end with our own fleet. We constantly evaluate our wider transportation model, ensuring our products make it across the world in a sustainable way. We place great emphasis on reducing packaging waste. This involves collaborating with suppliers and customers to streamline dispatch and delivery processes. By working with packaging integrity experts we have been able to minimise and reduce the weight of materials.
Factory Sustainability As highly accredited innovators in the area of sustainability across our processing sites, our achievements include: - Implementing a proactive energy and utility management programme through the use of our GP processes. - Employing combined heat and power technologies at our main manufacturing sites to maximise energy efficiency through the recovery of waste heat from electricity generation. - Continuously working towards enhancing energy efficiency and emissions, while processing increasing milk volumes from our farmers.
