A person ’ s legacy is defined by the lives they touch and the footprints they leave in our hearts.

Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of Phyliss Brown-Garner, who was called home to be with the Lord on May 7, 2025, while a patient at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.

Phyliss was born August 17, 1950, in Southampton County, Virginia, to the late Nathaniel “Bootjack” and Betty M. Brown.

Phyliss attended Southampton County Training School, Courtland, Virginia. She worked as a CNA for over 30 years until her health failed.

She gave her life to Christ at a young age and joined St. Mary A.M.E. Zion Church, Sebrell, Virginia. In her later years there, she joined the choir. Phyliss was a faithful Christian who thoroughly enjoyed praising and serving the Lord. After moving to the peninsula area, she joined Gethsemane Baptist Church, Newport News, Virginia, under the leadership of Bishop Dwight S. Riddick, Sr., whom she loved, adored, and respected.

She was preceded in death by her only son, Gary Brown; one sister, Betty A. Brown; three brothers, Nathaniel “Lil Bit” Brown, James Brown, and Richard Brown; and a brother-in-law, Robert Williams. Phyliss leaves to cherish her sweet memory and spirit to three sisters, Louvenia Williams (Chesapeake, VA), Helen Brown (Hampton, VA), and Marcellette B. Wiggins (Springfield, IL); two brothers, Jacky Brown (Sheraine), of Capron, VA and Joe Brown of Courtalnd, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
