Need some magic in your life? Then you’ve come to the right place. Birmingham isn’t called the Magic City for nothing.
With its rich history, the beauty of its natural surroundings, and its captivating brand of modern culture infused with southern charm, Birmingham lives up to its nickname well.
The magic began late in 1871, when Birmingham, a gritty, roughand-tumble industrial town, officially became a city through an act of the
Alabama Legislature. It was named after Birmingham, England, a major industrial city in the UK.
Located in one of the few areas in the US where the raw materials for making steel—limestone, iron ore, and coal—existed in proximity, Birmingham was the perfect place for iron and steel producers to set up shop. Before long, blast furnaces operated full bore, and the young city was booming.
With its thriving business community, Birmingham experienced extraordinary growth in land and

population, prompting the city’s founder and first elected mayor, James R. Powell, to proclaim it the Magic City.
Though the economic source of Birmingham’s growth has gradually shifted from an industrial track to a largely healthcare-based economy, the city remains as magical as ever. And things keep getting better all the time.
The city's culinary reputation is reaching new heights, with Greater Birmingham restaurants recognized in the first-ever MICHELIN Guide American South. From awardwinning service at Bottega to neighborhood favorites like Pizza Grace, Birmingham's food scene continues to prove it is among the best in the country.
Then there’s the number of teams sporting Birmingham gear. While we were once mainly a football and baseball town, we now support professional basketball, hockey, and soccer teams as well.
And how about the many cultural opportunities in Birmingham? We have a first-class art museum, Civil Rights District, live theater, concerts, and dance, not only for their entertainment value, but also for the many educational opportunities they provide. If you’re lucky, your visit will fall during one of several annual festivals celebrating the cuisines and customs of other countries.
Add to the city’s mix world-class events, outdoor activities, and aweinspiring attractions, and the magical qualities of Birmingham are clear to see.
We invite you to see, taste, and explore Greater Birmingham and its surrounding cities and experience the sheer vibrancy of a metropolitan area bursting with life at every turn. We hope you’ll enjoy your visit to the Magic City and that you’ll want to return someday.
In the meantime, we’ll say, “It’s Nice to Have You in Birmingham!”

Murals are some of the oldest kinds of visual art known to man. As far back as 30,000 years ago, cave dwellers took pigments derived from their environment and used their fingers to create pictures on the walls of their caves.
Though none of the Magic City’s murals go back quite that far (Bir-
mingham is, after all, only 154 years old), they’ve been seen around town from its earliest days. First created for advertising purposes, Birmingham’s murals now seek to entertain, educate, influence or, like the new Willie Mays mural on 18th Street N. and the Fred Shuttlesworth mural at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, honor the lives
of noteworthy individuals with local connections.
Pleasing to the eye and inspirational to the soul, murals make art available to everyone and often reflect a mural-hosting community’s cultural identity. The refreshing presence of murals may also play a role in revitalization, much like the murals of the Woodlawn neighborhood have done.
Birmingham’s murals are wall-size snapshots of the life of a Southern city–its struggles, its victories, its challenges, its charms. Several Birmingham murals chronicle its 1960s civil rights era, a sad and violent chapter that will forever haunt the city. Yet, unity and redemption appear in murals like The Birmingham Promise mural on the side of Birmingham Police Headquarters on 1st Avenue at 17th Street N., and the One City mural on the side of the Watts Realty building on 3rd Avenue S.

Public murals abound in Birmingham (a hundred or so in the metro area), and we encourage you to check some out. It’s a terrific way to learn more about the city and to see the impact of murals on their surroundings.
And as you view the murals, keep this tip in mind: In a city of magic, there’s bound to be some magic in its art. So be on the lookout. You won’t be disappointed.

To gain the most out of viewing Birmingham murals, pay attention to the details and see how the surrounding community, the historical context, and the subject matter combine to tell a story. As you view, consider these elements:
•Color is a visual language that can affect the mood or emotional impact of a mural. They may also imply cultural or psychological meanings. For example, bright colors mean joy, while dark colors indicate sadness.
•Shapes create a sense of form, depth, balance, and movement within a composition. With shapes, the artist can draw the viewer’s eye to a certain aspect of a mural, convey ideas, and even evoke emotions with shapes that have symbolic meaning.
•Lines are the fundamental building block of an artistic work. They define shapes, create depth, and essentially act as a thread to tie the elements of a mural together. The strategic placement of lines guides the viewer’s eye and highlights important details.
•Composition is what allows an artist to work effectively within the size and shape of the canvas. When the canvas is a huge outdoor wall, composition becomes critical to achieving balance and proportion, which is crucial to a mural’s message.

The roots of the Alabama Symphony trace back to 1921, when a group of volunteer musicians performed for the Birmingham Music Festival. Subsequently incorporated as Birmingham Civic Symphony Association, the group later became Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. To better reflect the organization’s statewide reach and support, the name was changed to Alabama Symphony Orchestra in 1979.
In the early days, attending the symphony meant dressing in one’s finest for an elegant evening of classical
music. Nowadays, though, only some choose to dress up, while others opt for the comfort of jeans.
The music has changed a bit, too. While the classics remain, many selections – even whole concerts – pay tribute to artists like Pink Floyd, Aretha Franklin, Abba, and more. The orchestra is also often on the move with free concert series like Tunes on Tap at local breweries and Symphony in the Summer at Railroad Park.
For more information on performances and tickets, visit https://alabamasymphony.org.

Like a beautiful work of art, Downtown Birmingham’s historic theater district can stir emotions, evoke memories, and transport you to a time when the glitz and glamour of old Hollywood dominated the entertainment scene. films, the Alabama still utilizes the Mighty Wurlitzer, also called "Big Bertha," organ that served as a one-man orchestra for what would have otherwise been totally silent screenings.
Located in the heart of downtown Birmingham since 1927, the Alabama Theatre has served as a venue for movies, concerts, beauty pageants, silent films, and even weddings on occasion. Each year, the theater hosts over 150 events attended by an estimated 150,000 people.
The monumental arch, terra cotta details and patterned brick of the Alabama Theatre’s front façade pays tribute to New York’s Paramount Theatre. The ornate interior design is an eclectic blend of Spanish Revival, Mission, Egyptian, and Moorish styles using materials from around the world.

Across the street from the Alabama Theatre stands the Lyric, the oldest theater in Birmingham made new again, thanks to an $11.8 million restoration project. The theater’s reopening in 2016 was celebrated 102 years after its original opening. For nearly 40 years, the building had stood vacant and deteriorating, an unrecognizable shell of its former glory.

When the Carver Theatre opened in 1935, Birmingham was in the throes of the Jim Crow era. One of the few theaters showing first-run films for African-American audiences, it became a hub for nightlife in the city’s segregated Black business district.
Economic depression caused by integration and white flight to the suburbs put the Carver out of business in 1980. The City of Birmingham eventually purchased the building, preserving it for its role in the Black community. The theater gained new life when the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame took over operations in 1993 and turned it into a showcase for Alabama’s jazz legacy.
Officially known as the Carver Performing Arts Theatre, the building underwent another renovation beginning in 2019 and reopening in August 2024. The new 21st Century design increased the center’s office and museum space and improved theatre seating.

Built in 1914, the Lyric is one of the few theaters still in existence with the maximized acoustics and close seating required for vaudeville shows. Milton Berle, one of the many stars who appeared there, deemed the Lyric “as fine a theatre as any in New York.”
With 750 seats on two levels, 12 opera boxes, and a mere 60 feet from the stage to the back row of the balcony, today’s Lyric serves as a visually spectacular case for preserving Birmingham’s cultural past for future generations.

Newcomers to Birmingham often stare agape at the city’s iconic Vulcan statue atop Red Mountain.
“Somebody needs to get that guy some pants,” someone in the crowd will always comment.
But Vulcan, god of fire and forge, and Birmingham’s symbol of a city
rooted in the iron and steel industry, has been mooning the city for over a century. Residents of the area are unfazed.
At 56 feet tall, Vulcan is the largest cast iron statue in the world. His 123foot pedestal provides visitors with soaring views of the city, a dramatic backdrop for the marriage proposals
that often occur in the shadow of the iconic effigy.
Italian-born sculptor Giuseppe Moretti created Vulcan to represent Birmingham at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Missouri. When the fair closed, Vulcan was dismantled and returned to Birmingham, where he languished beside the railroad tracks due to unpaid freight bills.
The statue was eventually reassembled at the Alabama State Fairgrounds, where it was pieced together minus Vulcan’s spear (lost during his St. Louis excursion) and with one arm attached backward. It remained at the fairgrounds until the move to Red Mountain in 1936.
In 1946, Vulcan became a symbol for road safety when the city’s Junior Chamber of Commerce installed a
green-glowing torch in his upraised hand. During the 24 hours following a fatal traffic accident in Birmingham, the torch glowed red as a public reminder to drive with care.
To mark Birmingham’s centennial in 1971, the area around the statue underwent a $1 million facelift. An elevator and observation deck were added, as well as a covered walkway that led to a gift shop and snack bar.
A more extensive renovation, which involved removing the statue from its pedestal for a piece-by-piece restoration, began in 1999. The statue was returned to the tower in 2003. Vulcan Park reopened in 2004, just in time to celebrate Vulcan’s 100th birthday.

Exciting things are happening at Birmingham’s Arlington Historic House & Gardens. Built in the 1840s, Arlington is the oldest house in the Birmingham area. The Greek Revival landmark in Birmingham’s Historic Arlington-West End neighborhood has long served as a decorative arts museum and an elegant venue for social occasions. But it has now taken a more unifying turn.
Owned by the City of Birmingham, Arlington is part of Mayor Randall Woodfin’s 2025 Vision goal to redefine and reimagine the city’s spaces and make them more inclusive. For Arlington, that means new programs, new partnerships, and a new image. One of the newest developments is Arlington’s Harmony and Heritage
lunch series, which provides healing, wellness and Black history highlights over a fulfilling meal. Other planned initiatives include a community garden, a juicing program, and a meal prep program.
Arlington is open to the public, Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Admission is $5 per adult; $3 per student, 6 to 18 years old. For more information, visit www. birminghamal.gov/city-directory/ arlington-house/ or @arlingtonbham on Instagram.

Ask a Birmingham native about some of their favorite childhood memories, and the Birmingham Zoo is sure to come up in the conversation. For generations, the zoo has entertained and educated children and adults alike and is one of Alabama’s most popular attractions.
Initially named the Jimmy Morgan Zoo in honor of the mayor who helped establish it, the Birmingham Zoo opened in 1955 with Monkey Island and a duck pond. An elephant house, bear moat, birdhouse, snake pit, and seal pool soon followed.
Starting with 50 acres in Lane Park, is Birmingham Zoo is now the 122-acre
home to approximately 550 animals of 180 species and endangered species from six continents. Some of its newer exhibits include the Kiwanis Giraffe Encounter, the Barbara Ingalls Shook Black Bear Trail, a native animal collection called Alabama Wilds, and Trails of Africa, which emphasizes the care and conservation of endangered elephants. Favorite spots for kids include the Junior League of Birmingham-Hugh Kaul Children’s Zoo and, of course, a seat on the zoo’s Red Diamond Express train.
The Birmingham Zoo is open every day from 9 am to 5 pm, except for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

s time marches on and the leaders and foot soldiers of the Civil Rights Movement fade away, they leave behind a legacy worth maintaining for future generations. To that end, landmarks significant to the Birmingham Campaign of 1963 are preserved within the Birmingham Civil Rights District. On January 12, 2017, President Barack Obama proclaimed the area a national monument.
The District encompasses the area along Third, Fourth, and Fifth Avenues North between 15th and 18th Streets. Here are some of the important sites to explore:
The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute
520 16th Street North
The centerpiece of the Civil Rights District, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI) is a museum and
church basement getting ready for a program.
The public outrage that followed helped secure the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and Birmingham’s place in American civil rights history was assured.
A.G. Gaston Motel
1510 5th Avenue North
A.G. Gaston, Birmingham’s first Black millionaire, ran several businesses, including a motel that played a central role in the Birmingham campaign. The motel hosted many civil rights leaders, who often met in its interior courtyard. Not long after Gaston paid Dr. King’s bail when he was jailed in Birmingham in April 1963, bombs were set off near the room where King was staying.
Bethel Baptist Church
3233 29th Avenue North
Outside the official parameters of the District, Bethel Baptist Church is credited with shaping the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham. A regular meeting place for members of the African American community to discuss civil rights, the church was bombed by white supremacists in 1958. As a result, Bethel’s pastor, Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth, already a civil rights activist, became even more determined to bring the movement to Birmingham.
educational center that documents the civil rights movement across the region. Proposed by then-mayor David Vann in 1978, his successor, Richard Arrington, Jr., Birmingham's first black mayor, carried on the work to secure funding and make that proposal a reality.
Designed by David Brody Bond, the BCRI opened in November 1992. The Institute’s extensive archive is open to scholars for research purposes by appointment only.
1530 6th Avenue South
On September 15, 1963, members of the Ku Klux Klan planted dynamite under the steps of 16th Street Baptist Church. The explosion took the lives of four young girls: 14-year-olds Carole Robertson, Cynthia Wesley, and Addie Mae Collins, and 11-yearold Denise McNair, who were in the
Originally opened in 1954, the A.G. Gaston Motel provided lodging, entertainment, and dining to African Americans traveling through the segregated South. Restored and reopened in 2022, the motel is a tribute not only to the life and legacy of Dr. Gaston, but also to its special place in civil rights history.
Kelly Ingram Park
500 17th Street North
Named after the first U.S. Navy sailor to die in World War I, Kelly Ingram Park became a spot for civil rights demonstrators to assemble during the Birmingham Campaign of 1963.
Commemorative sculptures throughout the park memorialize heroes of the civil rights movement, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, and others.
The four girls killed at 16th Street Baptist Church are remembered in the “Four Spirits” sculpture, unveiled on the 50th anniversary of the bombing. Other monuments honor the unsung heroes of the movement.
Despite beatings and attempts on his life, including a bombing at his house, Shuttlesworth persevered. Often working with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., to effect change, Rev. Shuttleworth initiated the Birmingham Campaign in 1963. The BirminghamShuttlesworth International Airport was named in Rev. Shuttleworth’s honor in 2008.

Take an informal survey of local foodies’ favorites at Birmingham-area restaurants, and what have you got? In this case, an eclectic list of selections ranging from hotdogs to prime rib and almost anything you can think of in between.
But one thing is abundantly clear: the locals like to eat out. So, who better to say what’s cookin’ on the Birmingham restaurant scene than people who regularly dine out? Here are some of their tried-and-true recommendations. (Refer to our Dining Out listing for specific location information.)
Some local must-try starters are the baked pimento cheese at Blueprint on 3rd, the appetizer sampler at Oak Hill Bar & Grill in Homewood, the Fritto Misto at Le’ Fresca, The Pita Stop’s hummus, and the Scotch egg at The Anvil in Hoover. For a taste of heaven, try the warm angel biscuits at Helen
In the salad category, Hot and Hot Fish Club’s tomato salad is a popular but summer-only option. Chez Fonfon’s Chez Fonfon Salad doesn’t appear on the menu but is available upon request. (“Ask for it,” said one diner. “You won’t be sorry.”) For a salad that also makes a satisfying meal, try the Southern chopped salad with smoked chicken at Jim ‘N Nick’s BBQ.
For an all-American meat-and-three, some of the highly recommended spots are Niki’s West, Ted’s Restaurant, and the Irondale Café. But Birmingham diners also love their international cuisine. Local Italian favorites include Gianmarco’s in Homewood, Bettola, Bottega, Bocca Ristorante, and Bongiorno in Mountain Brook.
In the Asian category, diners recommend Thai Basil, Surin of Thailand in Crestline, Surin West, and Nori Thai and Sushi. Longtime Chinese food fans in town still miss Joy Young Restaurant’s egg foo young and eggrolls, but rumor has it the egg foo young and eggrolls at Chop Suey Inn on Green Springs Hwy. are much like the Joy Young versions.
The Bright Star in Bessemer adds a Mediterranean flair to its menu with Greek snapper, Greek beef tips, Greek chicken, and more. When it comes to Mexican food, the local options abound. But Casa Fiesta in Trussville with its signature Casa Fiesta dip and
El Barrio’s plantain nachos received high marks in our survey.
Hungry for seafood? Automatic Seafood and Oysters was at the top of many diners’ lists. (Try the Caesar salad, if only for the dressing, which one diner described as “plate-licking good.”) Other recommendations are The Fish Market, a popular seafood tradition in Birmingham, and the elegant Ocean on Southside.
How about a sandwich? Some of our foodie friends say Sneaky Pete’s Hotdogs and Milo’s Hamburgers are the best. A barbecue sandwich at Archie’s Bar-B-Q & Burgers in Hoover works well for others. Or how about a Sweet Tea Fried Chicken sandwich with a side of fried okra at SAW’s Juke Joint? The name alone is tempting.
After all that, who’s ready for dessert? How about a chocolate croissant from Continental Bakery in Mountain Brook or crème brulee at Perry’s Steakhouse, or the peanut butter (or any) pie at The Bright Star? But no diner was more enthusiastic than the one who declared Chez Fonfon’s chocolate pot de crème “the best thing on their menu. I will not share!”

ince the early 1980s, with the arrival of chefs like Frank Stitt on the local scene, Birmingham’s reputation as a restaurant city has soared. Known for its diverse food culture, Birmingham’s culinary offerings range from Southern comfort food to international cuisine, earning it the nickname "The Dinner Table of the South."

Ninety-nine neighborhoods, each with its own distinctive qualities, join in creating the whole of Birmingham. But a cluster of neighborhoods lying north and east of downtown gets high marks for historical significance, architectural character, strong vibes, and sheer enjoyment.
The historic bungalows and stately homes of Avondale both blend and stand in sharp contrast to the energy of the Avondale entertainment district, but the mix works.
Stretching along 41st Street South
between 2nd and 5th Avenues, the district is home to Avondale Brewery, Saw’s Soul Kitchen, Parkside on Fifth, 41st Street Pub & Aircraft Sales, and Saturn Birmingham, a music venue with a coffee shop is run by Domestique Coffee.
Built around industry, Avondale was once a company town. North Avondale was home to Avondale Mills, a consortium of textile mills founded in Birmingham around 1897 by B.B. Comer, later a governor of Alabama. Shut down in 1971, the Birmingham mill was demolished in 1976.
In 1926, East Avondale became home to Continental Gin Company’s corporate headquarters and primary production facilities. The world’s largest

manufacturer of cotton gins, Continental Gin ceased operations in 1962.
The Forest Park-South Avondale neighborhood includes the Forest Park subdivision and the southern part of Avondale surrounding Avondale Park.
Developed in the early 1900s, Forest Park-South Avondale is a study in vintage architecture, including Tudor Revival, Bungalow, Neo-Classical, and more. A portion of Clairmont Avenue serves as a de facto main street and provides an idyllic snapshot of life in the neighborhood.
A visit to the neighborhood wouldn’t be complete without stopping to shop or to enjoy a casual repast at Forest

Park Village. Favorites there include General, a cozy home goods shop with a lunch counter; and Juniper Birmingham, a hip cocktail bar with vegan options on the menu.
South Avondale surrounds the historic Avondale Park, once home to the forerunner of the Birmingham Zoo. Nowadays, the park hosts music and art events, including the Birmingham Folk Festival, and serves as an outdoor programming venue for the Avondale branch of the Birmingham Public Library.
Straddling U.S. Hwy. 78 (a/k/a Crestwood Boulevard), Birmingham’s Crestwood community encompasses two neighborhoods: Crestwood North on the north side of the highway and Crestwood South across the way.
Developed as Woodlawn Heights,

Crestwood North was once known as Woodlawn Highlands. Featuring historic Craftsman-style bungalows and charming cottages, most built in the early to mid-1900s, Crestwood North is also home to Crestwood Village.
Built in the late 1950s, Crestwood Village offers an appealing mix of trendy and traditional establishments, including Crestwood Pharmacy & Soda Fountain, Red Bike Coffee, a fair trade gift shop called Sojourns, Urban Suburban antiques, Crestwood Tavern, and Vineyard Food Market. A former Shell station is now The Filling Station, a family-friendly restaurant featuring pizza, pasta, and craft beer. In contrast to the north side of the neighborhood, Crestwood South showcases the Mid-Century Modern appeal of the 1950s and 60s home styles. The nearby Crestwood Festival Center serves a variety of the area’s shopping needs.

As Birmingham grew and improvements in transportation made commuting a viable option for workers, the city’s suburban areas began to expand. Some of those areas were eventually annexed into Birmingham. Others incorporated and became towns and cities, establishing their own governments and schools, and creating public amenities like civic centers, parks, and libraries.
These communities become one, however, under the umbrella of the Birmingham, AL Metropolitan Statistical Area, also known as Greater Birmingham. Consisting of seven counties (Bibb, Blount, Chilton, Jefferson, St. Clair, Shelby, and Walker), the metro area has a population of over 1.1 million, ranking it among the 50 largest metropolitan statistical areas in the United States. It covers 77 municipalities, ranging from tiny rural communities to Hoover, the largest suburban city in Alabama.
Join us for a tour of the metro area and discover the hidden gems in some of our Greater Birmingham suburban communities. We think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Like Birmingham, Bessemer experienced rapid industrial growth, earning its own nickname, The Marvel City. Founded by steel magnate Henry Debardeleben in 1887, the city was named for Sir Henry Bessemer, a British scientist known for his contributions to the steel-making process.

How to get there: From Birmingham head south on I-20/59. Bessemer is 15-20 minutes away.
What to do or see: Accompanied by kids? Prepare to stop at Alabama Adventure & Splash Adventure, a popular amusement and water park. History buffs will enjoy the Bessemer Hall of History Museum in the former Great Alabama Southern Railroad depot.
Where to eat: Hungry for a satisfying meat-and-three at lunchtime or an upscale feast for dinner? The 118-year-old Bright Star Restaurant is a must. If barbecue is your craving, Bob Sykes BAR-B-Q is the place. The Sykes family has been “keeping the fire burning” since 1957.
While in the area: Visit nearby Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park for a unique blend of history, recreation, and natural beauty.
Once a top steel-producing city in Alabama, Bessemer’s economy is now largely a mix of industry, healthcare, and retail. Situated midway between Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, Bessemer lies in a corridor recognized as the fourth-best business development area in the nation.

WHow to get there: From Birmingham take a 10-minute drive south on the Red Mountain Expressway (US Highway 31) into downtown Homewood.
What to do or see: The Hollywood Historic District, known for its 1920s and 1930s Mission Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival homes, is a must-see for architectural enthusiasts. Put some “freshness” in your day with a trip to the West Homewood Farmer’s Market. Then hike over to Red Mountain Park for a stimulating nature walk and glimpses of old iron ore mine entrances.
Where to eat: For casual dining try Ironwood, a tribute to the area’s iron and fire heritage. For an upscale treat try Gianmarco’s and its authentic Italian cuisine.
While in the area: Visit Birmingham’s iconic Vulcan statue, a towering presence above Homewood.

hen Birmingham suffered a cholera epidemic in 1873, the fresh air and clear waters of Shades Valley began attracting people “over the mountain,” and communities formed. Several of these communities, including Rosedale, Grove Park, Edgewood, and later, Oak Grove and Hollywood, merged to become the City of Homewood.
A small city loaded with spirit and style, Homewood is noted for its family-friendliness, early 20th-century charms, and upscale approach to renewal and development.

When the Alabama Highway Department started widening Highway 31 from the crest of Shades Mountain to the Cahaba River in 1953, businessman William H. Hoover began buying land on Highway 31 south of Vestavia. In 1958, Mr. Hoover moved
his company, Employers Insurance of Alabama, Inc., to Highway 31 and purchased nearby land for home development. The area became known as the Hoover Community. In April 1967, the community, population 406, voted to incorporate. The new city was four blocks long and one

block wide. In contrast, today’s Hoover is Alabama’s largest suburban city, covering over 50 square miles of land with approximately 93,000 residents.
How to get there: From Birmingham go I-65 South, for 10-15 minutes, exit at Highway 31.
What to do or see: Explore 30 peaceful acres of nature and art in the heart of Hoover at Aldridge Gardens.

Where to eat: Jubilee Joe’s combines Cajun and Creole with a beach feel for a fun place to eat. Get a touch of soul in every bite at Jake’s Soul Food Café.

An eastern suburb of Birmingham, Leeds is a tri-county municipality in Jefferson, Shelby, and St. Clair Counties. Three Congressional Medal of Honor recipients called Leeds home. Thus, the nickname “The City of Valor.”
Founded in 1877 during the final years of the post-Civil War Reconstruction era, Leeds was home to the
workers and families of the Standard Portland Cement Company (now Lehigh), still in operation today.
Fun Fact: Some believe that the tale of John Henry, the “steel-drivin’ man” who races and wins against a steampowered rock drill in laying railroad, is based on a real-life incident in Leeds.

How to get there: From Birmingham take I-20 east and follow the signs.
What to do or see: See a race event or tour the grounds at Barber Motorsports Park. Enjoy some retail therapy at Bass Pro Shop or The Shops of Grand River.
Where to eat: Savor a variety of salads and desserts at the Three-Earred

Rabbit’s in downtown Leeds. Craving some open brick pit barbecue? Stop by Rusty’s Bar-B-Q for some ribs, pork, or chicken and a choice of four sauces: House, Sweet, Spicy, or White.
While in the area: Go fishing at nearby Lake Purdy, a 1,050-acre reservoir surrounded by 7,800 acres of wilderness area. Boat rentals are available.

One of the wealthiest suburbs in Alabama, Mountain Brook was founded by real estate developer Robert Jemison, Jr., and incorporated in 1942. Plans called for estate-size lots along scenic roads with a high ratio of tree cover and three commercial villages: English Village, Mountain Brook Village, and

and restaurants ranging from casual to upscale, Mountain Brook imparts its aura of affluence and southern charm to all who visit there.
How to get there: From Birmingham, head south on the Red Mountain Expressway (US Highway 31) and follow the signs to Mountain Brook.

stroll through the lovely Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

Crestline Village. (Cahaba Village and Overton Villages have since been added.) In 1955, the first office park in America was built in Mountain Brook.
As in the beginning, today’s Mountain Brook combines all the good things in life. A quietly elegant community characterized by historic neighborhoods, boutique shopping,

In the 1820s, Warren Truss built a grist mill on the Cahaba River in presentday northeastern Jefferson County. When a community formed around the mill, the Truss name was already associated with the area that later became Trussville.
Currently one of the fastest-growing cities in Alabama, Trussville has spent the 2000s welcoming a stream of new businesses and doubling its residential population to nearly 27,000. Its highly regarded schools make Trussville especially attractive to young families.

How to get there: From Birmingham, go north on I-59 to I-459. Take Exit 32 onto Gadsden Highway.
What to do or see: Visit the Gateway, Trussville’s entertainment district, for concerts, shopping, and dining, Explore the Cahaba Homestead Village Historic District, a neighborhood built in the 1930s under FDR’s New Deal. See the Alabama Fallen Warriors Memorial, which honors the 227 Alabama service members who died
during the Global War on Terror.
Where to eat: Enjoy casual dining and amazing beers at Ferus Artisan Ales. Discover a delicious array of Greek and Italian at Costa’s Mediterranean.
While in the area: Stop by the Irondale Café for a helping of the dish that inspired Fanny Flagg’s Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café. Sit near a window to see trains moving in nearby Norris Yard.

The industrial noise and pollution of early 20th-century Birmingham became unbearable for some of the city’s wealthier residents, several of whom sought relief on Shades Mountain. By the mid-1920s, a few estates had been on the mountain above Homewood. One of those homes, owned by former Birmingham

Park and Cahaba Heights became part of Vestavia in 1992 and 2002, respectively.
How to get there: From Birmingham take Highway 31 through Homewood and up Shades Mountain.
What to do or see: Catch a stunning view of Shades Valley from Sybil Temple, a replica of the Temple Sybil in Tivoli, Italy. Moved to Highway 31 from
the George Ward estate in 1975, it now greets visitors to the city.
Where to eat: Drop by Mudtown, a neighborhood restaurant in Cahaba Heights. Enjoy a taste of New American cuisine at Bistro V.
While in the area: Explore the beautiful Cahaba River Walk Park on the eastern edge of Mountain Brook near Liberty Park.
mayor George Battey Ward, was based on the temple of the Roman goddess Vesta in Rome, Italy, and would become the namesake of Vestavia Hills.
Today’s Vestavia Hills, colloquially known as Vestavia, is a vibrant community centered on Montgomery Highway, a three-and-a-half-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 31. The communities of Liberty
