ONE WORD RISES TO THE TOP AS I LOOK BACK AT ALL WE ACHIEVED TOGETHER: COMMUNITY. It has been a tremendous year for GBCA, proving that when we come together, we can accomplish great things. 2017 was a year of transformation for our association. One word rises to the top as I look back at all we achieved together: community.

GBCA welcomed several new members this year, who became part of a vibrant community in which business relationships and partnerships can grow and thrive. Across the board, we had recordbreaking attendance and participation at our various networking and educational programs in 2017. Your support and engagement only energizes us more, as we look ahead to how we can help facilitate more meaningful connections within our industry.

Every community begins with a great team. In 2017, GBCA welcomed four new staff members, and all our departments were fully committed to expanding their reach more than ever before.

From developing new safety resources to broadcasting our message to the masses, GBCA aimed to offer a well-rounded program that would best serve you, our members. Thank you to our association leadership and committees that help steer our efforts year-round.

As it becomes increasingly important for the voice of the commercial and institutional construction industry to be heard, I am grateful for the collaboration and unity that has stemmed from the community we have established. Together,

we are advocating for issues that will have an impact on the industry in the years to come.

OUR HISTORY BROUGHT US HERE. OUR FUTURE IS LIMITLESS. As one of America’s oldest trade associations, GBCA has a rich history of promoting integrity, responsibility, and skill. We advance commercial construction in the Philadelphia region by serving as a powerful voice, an industry watchdog, and a critical resource.

Established in 1891, we are the Philadelphia chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC). We provide more than 250 member companies with access to networking opportunities, safety services, education and training programs, and proven advocacy.

When members want to fundamentally improve how their business operates, they turn to us. We provide a forum where members engage in collaborative activities that promote education, safety, marketing, and better relationships within the industry, as well as with labor and government.

Our membership ranks include commercial, industrial, and institutional general contractors, subcontractors, material suppliers, and construction service firms located in southeastern Pennsylvania, northern Delaware, southern New Jersey, northern Maryland, and the Eastern shore.

2017 FINANCIALS AT A GLANCE In 2017, GBCA focused on safeguarding association assets by more efficiently using current resources, building reserves to ensure continuity during any future economic downturn, and investing in infrastructure.

Over the last five years, GBCA has seen a dramatic increase in financial performance due to a strong construction market and a renewed focus on operational efficiencies. From 2012 to 2016, we experienced a total revenue compound annual growth rate of 9 percent and a net profit compound annual growth rate of 46 percent.

In 2017, GBCA welcomed 30 new members. All our members receive access to exclusive networking and special events throughout the year. In 2017, we hosted more programs than ever before to sold-out crowds.

Annual Meeting January 23 More than 460 of GBCA’s members attended the 127th Annual Meeting at the Union League of Philadelphia — making it the most attended Annual Meeting in history! Members, elected officials, and industry partners thanked Emily Bittenbender for her service over the past two years and welcomed James J. Dolente, Sr. as the new Chairman of the Board for 2017-2018. Mike Armento was also welcomed to the Executive Committee, and William A. Cobb was honored with the Distinguished Director Award for 2017. The night closed with a heartfelt keynote speech from former Eagles Head Coach Dick Vermeil. 16.

Membership Dinners | March 16 and September 28

GBCA hosted two Membership Dinners at the Cescaphe Ballroom Increase in attendance in Philadelphia, welcoming a record number of 400+ attendees. At for our Membership our Spring Membership Dinner, members enjoyed a presentation by Anne Fadullon, director of planning and development cabinet for the City Dinners, from 2015 of Philadelphia. The event was moderated by Erin Coleman, NBC10 news anchor.

Our Fall Membership Dinner featured Michael Sheward from the Sheward Partnership as emcee, with special presentations from Sara Merriman from Brandywine Realty Trust and Diego Rincon, deputy director of aviation from the Philadelphia International Airport.

Golf Outing June 5 GBCA hosted its annual golf outing at Whitemarsh Valley Country Club. Despite the weather, attendees were able to get in a full 18 holes of golf. Len Lynch, president, Lenick Construction Inc., was this year’s 50/50 winner. He chose to donate his winnings back to Alex’s Lemonade Stand.

Active Member Dinner October 10 – New For 2017 Active members of GBCA and invited guests attended a dinner with John Ballantyne, executive secretarytreasurer for the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters. The dinner provided an opportunity for active members to learn more about the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters and to socialize with the leaders of the Council.

Construction Excellence Awards November 14 The 20th anniversary Construction Excellence Awards ceremony, held at Vie Ballroom in Philadelphia, was a full house celebrating building craftsmanship, innovation, and collaboration. With 18 categories spanning the variety of specialties represented within GBCA membership, the awards also honored those members making noteworthy strides in diversity and inclusion, safety, and technology.

Holiday Party December 6 GBCA members closed out the year with food and festivities at The Fretz Showroom in South Philadelphia.

In the spirit of giving, GBCA’s Construction Leadership Council continued its annual tradition of collecting toys for the Northern Children’s Services Holiday Toy Drive.

SAFETY IS

FUNDAMENTAL. GBCA plays a vital role in providing our members, including those with limited resources, with access to the most up-to-date safety resources, training, and best practices. Our program spans safety topics such as fall protection, electrocution, hazard communication, inclement weather, emergency response, confined space entry, hand and power tool operation, and much more. In 2017, we continued and expanded our signature safety programs while introducing and supporting new initiatives.

Water. Rest. Shade. Heat Awareness Campaign Hardworking construction professionals in Philadelphia received respite from the summer heat in July, thanks to GBCA and Med-Tex Services, Inc. Representatives from both organizations visited several job sites across the city in a “blitz” fashion via the GBCA Safety Van to hand-deliver hydration, sunblock, and heat prevention materials to workers. The program was inspired by the OSHA “Water. Rest. Shade.” campaign to keep workers safe in the heat and to draw attention to the importance of heat illness prevention and helping to ensure workers stay safe.

Eggs with OSHA Our popular breakfast series offers members the opportunity to meet with OSHA officials from the Philadelphia area and Region III offices outside of the compliance realm and learn about updates to OSHA initiatives on the local, state, and federal level.

Focus Four Training From February through May, OSHA requested that construction companies focus their safety meetings and Toolbox Talks on the Focus Four Hazards: electrical hazards, fall hazards, struck-by hazards, and caught-in or -between hazards. GBCA developed and shared sample Toolbox Talks in the News at a Glance newsletter every week during this four-month period to assist the members in their training efforts.

2017 Construction Safety Week and City Council Proclamation In May, GBCA was presented with a resolution from Philadelphia City Council in formal recognition of its work that has increased awareness of safe construction practices in the City of Philadelphia, specifically during Construction Safety Week, held May 1-5, 2017. Construction Safety Week is an annual event that encourages the construction industry to work together to strengthen its safety culture. During the week, special safety training and education activities are conducted to share best practices and to ensure safety preparedness and awareness among every worker, on every jobsite, every day.

Silica Symposium In December, GBCA offered an interactive symposium with OSHA officials from the Philadelphia area and Region III offices to provide information about the newly introduced Table 1 section of the silica standard.

Approximately 100 participants, along with several vendors, engaged in a Q&A session and an overview of how to be compliant. Quizzes using scenarios encountered on construction sites helped the attendees further understand the new section.

More Safety Training for Members GBCA continued to expand its safety training discounts for members by offering a 10 percent discount on ClickSafety’s 300-plus safety courses through the Associated General Contractors (AGC), which include OSHA’s 10- and 30-hour safety courses in construction, and the preparatory course for the Board of Certified Safety Professional’s Safety Trained Supervisor in Construction certification.

Distributed to individual members enrolled in construction education programs in 2017

Course Highlights GBCA-sponsored education courses are available to employees of Active and Associate member companies, and companies that contribute on behalf of the employee to the GBCA-administered Industry Advancement Program (IAP). This GBCA education program is intended to provide continuing education opportunities for industry personnel through tuition reimbursement. With a focus on adapting programs to the changing needs of the industry, GBCA introduced the Lean Construction Series in the spring and Introduction to Estimating & Scheduling course in the fall. The AIA/GBCA Joint Committee partnered with the Construction Owners Association of America (COAA) in June to produce “PennFirst: The IPD Team that Tackles Urban Planning,” and in November, the Committee co-hosted a panel at the Master Builders’ Dialogue in conjunction with the Carpenters Company.

Tuition Reimbursement & Scholarships In 2017, GBCA expanded its tuition reimbursement program, distributing nearly $38,000 to individual members enrolled in construction education programs at local colleges and universities. The association awarded its second annual scholarship to benefit students as they advance their construction studies. As part of the GBCA Scholarship Fund, which is an arm of the AGC Education and Research Foundation, student beneficiaries who are enrolled locally in ABET- or ACCE-accredited construction management or construction-related engineering programs are awarded an annual $2,500 scholarship, renewable for up to three years, for undergraduate or graduate studies.

Apprenticeship & Mentorship Partaking in two different apprentice-ready programs in 2017, GBCA proudly provided opportunities for residents of the City of Philadelphia interested in pursuing careers in union carpentry. More than 25 students passed union apprenticeship exams. Partnerships with the Construction Apprentice Preparatory Program (CAPP) and the Carpenters’ Career Advancement Program proved successful and will continue into 2018.

GBCA also continued its Hard Hat Club at the Charter High School for Architecture + Design in Philadelphia in 2017, which teaches students about careers in construction and provides experiences to learn about the industry.

GBCA’s close partnership with the ACE Mentor Program of Eastern Pennsylvania, which offers area students mentorship opportunities in architecture, construction, and engineering, continued in 2017. GBCA, ACE Mentor Program and GBCA member Turner Construction Company joined forces on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service 2017 to build flower boxes to beautify a block in Southwest Philadelphia in partnership with Councilman Kenyatta Johnson’s office.

Partners in Learning Through partnerships and alliances with several area colleges and universities, GBCA is helping to create the most skilled and highly trained construction workforce.

GBCA serves as our members’ liaison with local, state, and federal government officials, and is the go-to organization for local labor relations support. Our influence continues to increase. We are committed to protecting the best interests of our industry and ensuring our members are represented in conversations pertaining to government affairs and public policy.

Industry Collaborations GBCA has been intentional about remaining active in the halls of power in Philadelphia, Harrisburg, and Washington, DC. We have also relied heavily on both new and seasoned relationships with other organizations within our industry. From the Philadelphia Commerce Department’s Business Legislative Advisory Group to the General Contractors Association of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg, these relationships help to expand our network of relevant connections and achieve a higher success rate through collaboration.

Labor Relations In 2017, GBCA worked diligently to lead negotiations with our affiliated trades: laborers, carpenters, cement masons, operating engineers, rodsetters, drywall finishers, and plasters. GBCA negotiated an equitable agreement with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 542, organized conversations with the leadership of the Metropolitan Regional Council of Carpenters, and participated in the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters’ annual Carpenters Open House, among other programs and events.

2017 PAC Highlights GBCA is active through political action committees (PACs) at local (GBCA PAC), state (GCAP PAC), and federal (AGC PAC) levels on issues important to GBCA members. The GBCA PAC represents the strong, collective voice of our committed membership and effective leadership on local matters within the City of Philadelphia and surrounding counties. In April 2017, the GBCA PAC held a very successful fundraiser at the Pyramid Club. We will be ramping up our political activity in preparation for statewide and federal elections in 2018 and City Council elections in 2019.

GCAP PAC is the primary vehicle that GBCA uses to advocate for legislation to permit multiple project delivery methods on publicly funded projects. GCAP PAC allows us to maintain a strong industry presence on statewide issues along with the Master Builders’ Association of Western PA and the Keystone Contractors Association.

AGC PAC supports GBCA activity on a national level. GBCA has been influential in solidifying strong AGC PAC support for our Southeastern PA delegation. We relentlessly advocate for pro-construction candidates to effectively represent us on Capitol Hill. Throughout 2017, GBCA has engaged the majority of our PA delegation in meetings in their districts and in Washington, DC.

2017 Legislative and Regulatory Highlights In 2017, GBCA participated in several critical city, state, and national legislative and regulatory issues: City n Advocated for sensible reforms to legislation governing demolition permits n Advocated for increased staffing level for the Department of Licensing and Inspections to improve service delivery for our industry n Testified on legislation that governs sidewalk closures for construction projects n J oined the City’s Regulatory Review Committee to address onerous and dated regulations governing construction and development n Testified to decrease the proposed permit fee increases for sidewalk closures n Provided a letter of support for the City’s application to land Amazon’s HQ2 n Joined the development community to testify against the Inclusionary Zoning legislation n Worked with City Council to modify legislation that will regulate mobile crane activity in Philadelphia State Lobbied to provide public projects with additional project delivery methods beyond the limitations of the Separations Act n Lobbied to restructure of the Uniform Construction Code Review Advisory Committee to allow for the adoption of newer versions of the International Building Code n

NBC10 Growing Greater Philadelphia GBCA’s exciting new partnership with NBC10 and the Select Greater Philadelphia Council this year highlighted the impact of construction in our region and the companies driving the transformation. On the new 30-minute TV series “Growing Greater Philadelphia,” which aired select weeknights at 7 p.m. throughout the year, viewers received an inside look at the emerging and flourishing businesses and industries in the Greater Philadelphia region, including construction. GBCA member companies and projects were highlighted on segments on the show and featured in GBCA commercials during the program.

In 2017, GBCA reached more than 20 million viewers, readers, and listeners across the Greater Delaware Valley through paid advertising and sponsorships in leading media outlets. GBCA sponsored a popular Crane Watch feature highlighting active construction projects on the Philadelphia Business Journal website and spotlighted the winners of the Construction Excellence Awards in a special insert within The Philadelphia Inquirer.

A Philadelphia sports-themed broadcast and print advertising series, which aired on Sportsradio 94 WIP and was published in fan materials, highlighted how GBCA members have built the sports stadiums and other popular landmarks in the Philadelphia region.

GBCA’s award-winning magazine, Construction Today, reached more than 20,000 readers in 2017 and included more member contributors than ever before, and our popular weekly enewsletter, GBCA News at a Glance, is sent to more than 1,200 recipients every Monday.

Members also turn to our website and social channels for the latest news, with Facebook serving as one of the leading referrers to GBCA.com.

The blog is the second most popular page on the website, after our events calendar, demonstrating how members continue to rely on GBCA.com as a trusted resource for industry information and updates.

MAKING A

DIFFERENCE.

The Construction Leadership Council (CLC), the young construction professionals group of GBCA and an extension of the national AGC CLC, is helping to advance and promote the construction industry in Philadelphia and beyond.

Our popular CLC Hard Hat Tour continued again in 2017, offering a behind-the-scenes tour of the new Fashion District of Philadelphia.

With community service at the core of CLC’s mission, the group rallied behind several important causes this year.

GBCA and the CLC also sponsored the popular Preston & Steve Camp Out for Hunger holiday food drive in November with 93.3 WMMR, encouraging the community to help “Demolish Hunger” at the branded GBCA donation drop-off area during the weeklong live broadcast event. As part of its involvement in the Camp Out for Hunger, the association donated more than 42,000 pounds of produce to Philabundance, the largest hunger relief organization in the Delaware Valley.
