2024 GBCA Annual Report

WE ARE GBCA

Founded in 1891, we are the Philadelphia chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC). Representing over 340 member companies, we provide access to advocacy, networking opportunities, safety services, and education and training programs. Dedicated to supporting and promoting union commercial construction, we actively work to advance the industry through workforce development initiatives.

As one of America’s oldest trade associations, we advance commercial construction in the Philadelphia region by serving as a powerful voice and a critical resource.

OUR MISSION

General Building Contractors Association advances the union commercial, industrial, and institutional Construction industry by serving members as the leader in labor relations, education, advocacy, safety, and networking opportunities.

BUILDING EXCELLENCE

GBCA is the recognized leader of the Philadelphia region’s union commercial construction industry. By providing resources across all facets of the industry, we empower our members with the knowledge, tools, and connections they need to succeed.

It has been an incredible honor to serve as your Chairman of the Board of Directors. The strength of our association lies in the collective dedication of our members—industry leaders who are shaping the future of construction in Philadelphia. Reflecting on the past two years, I am proud of the progress we have made. Together, we have strengthened GBCA’s role as a key advocate for union construction in the region. Our presence in city leadership has never been stronger, with GBCA members and staff actively serving on Mayor Parker’s Transition Team, the Mayor’s Business Roundtable, the Philadelphia Housing Authority Board of Commissioners, and the L&I Task Force. Additionally, our GBCA PAC has achieved the highest level of member engagement in our history, strengthening our industry’s influence on key policies.

Workforce development remains at the core of our mission. In 2024, we hosted our first-ever Construction Career Day, introducing the next

generation to the opportunities within our field. Our Construction Leadership Council (CLC) continues to grow, engaging young professionals eager to learn and lead.

Collaboration with labor has been another key focus. We have strengthened partnerships with the unions we bargain with that create competitive advantages for signatory GBCA contractors. These relationships are essential as we work to maintain high industry standards and ensure a strong pipeline of skilled workers. It is imperative that we continue to evolve with innovative construction methods and techniques to meet all of the challenges facing our industry.

Finally, engagement in GBCA has never been stronger. Our events continue to draw record attendance and our Board remains deeply committed to advancing our shared goals. The demand to be part of this community has never been greater—proof of the value we create together.

I want to thank each of you for your dedication to this industry and for making GBCA such a powerful force. Our collective efforts are shaping the future of construction in Philadelphia, and I have no doubt that the best is yet to come.

I’ve always appreciated the saying that people often overestimate what they can accomplish in one year and underestimate what can be achieved in ten. Two years into our three-year strategic plan, that perspective feels more relevant than ever. In 2023, the GBCA Board of Directors laid out four strategic pillars—Labor Relations, Industry Relations, Next Generation & Workforce, and Operational Excellence—and we’ve made impressive headway across each of them.

Our first year demanded patience as we defined goals and tactics. But by the start of 2024, we had a clear plan, and the momentum grew. Now, with two years behind us, your GBCA is on track to fulfill much of the Board’s ambitious vision. We’ve strengthened relationships with labor partners, reinforcing a competitive edge for signatory contractors. Our ongoing industry outreach has further elevated GBCA as the region’s leading subject matter expert, with members and staff serving in key roles such as on the Mayor’s Business Roundtable and the Philadelphia Housing Authority

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO

Board of Commissioners. Our PAC also achieved record member engagement, reflecting our growing influence.

In workforce development, our Construction Leadership Council remains an essential engine for cultivating rising talent and engaging new voices. We hosted our first Construction Career Day, reached over 16,000 school aged individuals –well on our way to our goal of 25,000, and continue to partner with initiatives like Everybody Builds Philadelphia and the Carpenters Apprentice Ready Program (CARP) to foster a more inclusive, diverse pipeline of future builders. Meanwhile, our focus on operational excellence has led to all-time highs in membership engagement, event participation, and board involvement.

This plan, like the ones before it, sets the building blocks for our organization’s growth. It can be difficult to see progress when you’re immersed in day-to-day tasks, but a broader view shows how GBCA has flourished over years—even decades—through sound strategic direction. Each success

underscores that more is possible, emboldening our Board to expand our collective vision.

As we close out a pivotal 2024 and sprint into a critical 2025, we stand on the brink of completing this bold three-year plan while charting the course for our next chapter. Because of your support and dedication, the possibilities are indeed endless. To our members, thank you for your trust and partnership—GBCA exists to serve and represent you. To our partners and stakeholders, we look forward to demonstrating yet again why GBCA’s members are unmatched in their commitment to excellence. And to the entire GBCA team, thank you for the hard work that has led to such a successful second year. Together, we will continue building a legacy of which we can all be proud.

Sincerely,

General Building Contractors
