Summer... I do hope so. But just to keep you on your toes whilst we wait - Kingswells Primary is 25 years young on 21 June. Kingswells Community Council has a brand new shiny logo and website and are trying very hard to act on your behalf. The Rowett are looking for your help again with a new research study and the Community Centre has two new groups to introduce you too. May I introduce Sonja Angus a lovely home store in Cults where you can find goodies for your home from all over the globe, with Sonja’s help of course. The gym at the Village Hotel has had a refurb and is looking fantastic. In the hope that the sun will shine brightly or you will take yourselves off on a fabulous vacation then Scott Gilmour can help with prescription sunglasses that will make you stand out from the crowd. Also Jasmin is looking to help you with your piano lessons so give her a shout. My battling dilemma this month was washing and changing bedding for all my lovely visitors and deciding on what to put down on my patio - porcelain, decking, composite decking, slate, grass or sleepers - the debate continues. I’ll be back with a new magazine for you in August, please do get in touch if you have anything you would like included. Deadline is 20 July.

Kingswells Primary School News Bucksburn Learning Partnership has reached the final 3 for the effective use of resources award and was nominated by Aberdeen City Council Education Chief Education Officer. We comprise partners from schools, Community Learning, Community Representatives, Active Schools, Social Work, Health, Educational Psychology Team, Police Scotland, Educational Social Workers and Third Sector Partners. The group have fostered collaborative working practices to increase parental engagement, support vulnerable children and address mental health concerns from the earliest stages. Initiatives driven by the partnership include the roll out of ‘emotion coaching’ parental workshops to support positive mental health in children. A 10 week course is run by our Educational Social Worker for parents wishing to improve their understanding of how best to bring up their children. The partnership has a newly appointed Family Support Worker to further help families in our local community. Action points for the coming session are being explored with vandalism, respect, food poverty and community relationships at the forefront of these plans. Individual Schools have been able to seek support from Police Scotland who are delivering workshops in schools. Both Kingswells School and Kingswells Community Council have representatives on this group. The strength of the Bucksburn Learning Partnership has been the open, honest discussions, the value that has been placed on partnership working and the constant reminder that everything we do is for our children and families.
25th Anniversay Dolphin Design Competition 2019 This year in June, Kingswells Primary School is celebrating 25 years in the current building. To mark the occasion of our silver anniversary we are holding an open day on Friday June 21st for the community to share the work we have done in our classes. We recently held a competition to design our dolphin in preparation for the 25th anniversary for our school.

Check out our website www.gazettemagazines.com
During assembly we were told all about this exciting competition. It was for a new design for our school dolphin which previously had been designed by a P3 class for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2014. The competition was optional although many pupils decided to participate. Each class had to vote for their winner. The final designs were sent to be judged by the head teacher, the depute head teachers who chose the top 5 designs. Craig, the Co-op manager chose the overall winner. A fabulous design by a P2 pupil was chosen and our dolphin has now been painted with the help of the runners up from each class and other pupils. The wonderful dolphin is being displayed in the school reception. The 25th anniversary will be celebrated on the 21st of June, so that week all the classes will be celebrating. Each class will learn about what our school was like in 1994. Also pupils have been asked to bring in any photos or memories from people who were in Kingswells during 1994. Overall we are very happy with our new dolphin and are excited for the anniversary of Kingswells Primary School. By Ella, Kirsty & Amie P7
Young Leaders Of Learning What we do as a Young Leaders of Learning We help our school management team to make our school the best place it can be for everyone. We are beginning to help with the School Improvement Plan. We had some training with Education Scotland and Sparqs at Bucksburn Academy. They helped us learn how to inspect certain areas in a school and told us we’d be focusing on ‘Relationships’ from ‘How Good is Our School’ on our visits. Then we buddied up with Hazlehead Primary and planned visits between the two schools. When we started, Hazelhead Primary Young Leaders came to visit our school and it was really fun. There were a lot of nice children who gave us a lot of great feedback and a lot of great things to do. Next, we went to Hazlehead and they showed us around their school, we gave them nice feedback and helped them think about how to support ‘Relationships’ in their school. We really like Hazlehead school! After both visits we looked at suggestions for our school and Hazlehead and started to work on some new ideas. We have had a lot of meetings on how to improve our school and are looking forward to sharing them.

What we will do in the future as a Young Leader of Learning In the future we are going to improve our school by adding thermoplastic writing around our friendship bench, we are also going to try and introduce peer mediators and finally we will also try to make the house points system better. We are also introducing friendship monitors. Why did I want to be a Young Leader of Learning? We wanted to be Young Leaders of Learning because we wanted to meet new people in new schools and socialise with them. We also wanted to socialise with younger people in our own school. We also thought it would be fun and it is! Â Young Leaders of Learning is a great opportunity to meet new people and make lots of new friends and it has helped us grow in confidence, improve our communication skills and build friendships. Kingswells Community Centre We held our AGM on the 7th May with a fantastic turn out second time round. We would like to welcome new members on the committee and look forward to working with them. Look out for the Family Fun Open Day at Webster Park, run in conjunction with KidSize on Sunday 23rd June. There will be games, sports, BBQ, live music, a bouncy castle and much more. This quarter the activities we are focusing on is Kingswells Karate and Kingswells Toddlers Group.
If you’re a parent or carer with children 5 and under, why not come along to your local toddler group. Whether you’re looking for an opportunity to mingle with like-minded parents and carers, or a change of scene for your children, the Kingswells Toddler Group is the place to come. We have plenty for your children to explore - they could be cooking up a feast in our toy kitchen one minute and zooming down the slide the next. We have toys for all stages of development including walkers and ride-ons, and a designated baby area. We are lucky to have the large hall in Kingswells Community Centre, giving your child more freedom and the opportunity to gain independence in a safe, secure environment. It’s also an opportunity for them to develop social skills and make new friends. So come along and join us on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9.30 until 11am term-time. The group is run by parents and we’re always looking for new members to join our committee. We are also hoping to have a few special events over the next few months including messy play and a summer party, so there’s no better time to get involved!
In a karate class you will learn many techniques using your hands and techniques that will help you defend yourself and stay fit. I began my karate journey in 1991. I had no idea what karate was, other than what I had seen on cartoons. Lucky for me I had a fantastic and inspiring instructor (Duncan McPherson) who could pull off any of the high kicks better than any movie star and throw all the giants in the adults class around with ease. As I grew older I had opportunities to travel around and train with different karate clubs and experience different martial arts. I competed in competitions around the UK, won some medals and trophies and even had the honour of representing Scotland twice in international competitions. The next step for me was to open up a Karate class in Kingswells. It’s been a fantastic success so far! We have plenty of keen students who are showing real promise and lots of great experienced karate people who help coach at the club. I have loved every minute of running the club and hope we can keep it going!
Music on the Move What are the best headphones for running? Research has shown what most of us instinctively knew - that listening to the right type and tempo of music while you run keeps you ‘in the zone’ for longer. So what factors are important when choosing headphones for running? Water resistance – If you run outside this is obviously important, but many of us forget that sweat is water and if you’re running, indoors or out you will sweat, and eventually this will kill your headphones. Fit – There are headphones which wrap tightly around your head, or over and around your ears. But the best types of running headphones are probably true wireless, or lightweight Bluetooth. They are ‘in-ear’ designs with tips that fit into the ear and additional, curved, tapered ‘hooks’ that sit under the crater of cartilage just above the earhole, known as the anti-helix. When you’re running little things like a cable rubbing the back of your neck can feel irritating. Also, although the battery life can be irritatingly short with true wireless headphones if you use them as your main set, it’s more than long enough for even the most enthusiastic runner. Wireless and ‘true wireless’ headphones are different - ‘True wireless’ headphones completely lack a cable or connector between the earpieces. Wireless headphones are still connected in some way, either over the head or round the back of the neck, even if they no longer need to be connected to a phone jack. Sound quality – This is possibly the least important feature for sports use. Mostly runners want to feel the beat and be motivated by their pumped-up playlist, while blocking out external noise. Sports headphones are not about being able to pick out the subtle nuances in a Chopin piano concerto. They need to be reasonable sound quality and be able to cope with a bit of bass. Ambient Sound – Some headphones are designed to let in ambient sound with good reason: situational awareness is important if you run on your own and you want to be aware of traffic or of someone approaching you. This feature is less important if you prefer to run in a gym and want to block out the world. Running is such a great activity, and the right music will add to the experience, so pick up some headphones today and in the words of the classic from Spencer Davis Group which features on my own playlist…Keep on Running. Latest News Readers are reminded that a full account of Community Council business and other local and Aberdeen news is available on our website kingswells connected.
Note from the chair of KCC Our first 6 months‌ Continuing on from the initiatives for building engagement and raising awareness of who is in the KCC and what they are here to do, I wanted to share my thoughts on our first 6 months. We have had our highs and the lows but none the less our unwavering commitment to make living and working in Kingswells is the best it can be. On the whole feedback from residents and businesses has been very positive, they feel the council members are more visible, approachable and are happy with the changes we are making. We have had many positive comments about the changes to the web page, how it’s become more user
10
friendly and traffic has considerably increased since we launched the temporary landing page earlier this year. We have also had feedback that communication has improved and is more relevant for the entire community. However, we do not sit on our laurels and know there is much more that can be done to connect the community. Unfortunately, since the start of the year there has been a few complaints from local residents who have been unnecessarily negative and disrespectful to current new council members. It’s worth pointing out that the current KCC have taken on these roles without an understanding of what the perception of KCC was but wanted to be
part of making Kingswells better. In addition, all of the community councillors are volunteers, there is no financial reward for undertaking a role on the community council. We are all local residents, majority of whom work full time, however all share the same passion about the Kingswells community and are doing the best they can with the resources, knowledge and time available to them. In addition to these challenges we have had to deal with a number of legacy issues which all take time to resolve and prevent us from being able to move other activities or initiatives as quickly as we would like. We wont shy away from criticism however we ask that feedback be given in a formative and constructive

manner. We are very open to improving and ensuring that we’re serving the majority of the community the best we can; however change is needed but we will always endeavour to make changes in a respectful and consultative way. We need your help and we want your input but most of all if you aren’t happy about something come and help us fix it, we are only human after all! BACKGROUND TO AND UPDATE ON ABERDEEN LOCAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN May 2019 Aberdeen City Council (ACC) review the Local Development Plan (LDP) every 5 years. Throughout the 5 year period monitoring and approving takes place as laid out in the Development Plan Scheme 2018. This is to ensure that there is a continuous supply of housing
and employment land. One of the main documents used in progressing the reports is The Main Issues Report (MIR). This document is set up so as to allow discussion on main Planning issues and to recommend various options to deal with them. The current MIR was open for review by the public however all comments had to be submitted to ACC no later than 13th May 2019.
the local residents choose to update us). We will however continue to express our concerns regarding school capacity and community infrastructure being able to cope with further housing developments.
Publication and consultation on the proposed Development Plan takes place from June 2019 to October 2021 and in January 2022 ACC will adopt the final plan.
Aberdeen FC - Kingsford Stadium Project
The LDP and process has been communicated by the KCC extensively and consistently on various mediums since consultation opened in February 2019. This is to ensure Kingswells residents could process their views and proposals plus keep up to date with any amendments to the wider plan. It is important to stress that after consultation closed on the 13th of May discussions between developers and ACC will continue and only residents who raised concern/ objections will be updated on progress directly from them. It is worth noting that KCC are not made aware of wider local opinion on this (unless

The KCC will continue to provide any updates on our web site “Kingswells Connected.”
Two representatives from KCC, as well as other local Community Groups, recently attended a meeting with Aberdeen Football Club (AFC) and their Community Trust (AFCCT) Team to get an update on the whole project. AFC stated from the outset of the project approval that they wanted to work with the wider community to achieve the best facilities for all, and these meetings are progressing well. Currently Phase 1 is due to be completed by September/ October time. It is hoped that a short presentation/ discussion by AFCCT with Kingswells residents may take place towards the end of the year/beginning of 2020. Details will follow as and when information is available.

purposes as it was felt that there are sufficient options for that purpose already in Kingswells. We appreciate this may be disappointing to some however feel this is the most appropriate use for these items bearing in mind that communication has to be made accessible to all. We will be utilising these more extensively as we evolve.
Litter Pick
We are planning a number of litter pickup activities in the next few months and dates will be confirmed shortly. We encourage residents to take part and help support their community by keeping Kingswells beautiful. Communication

We have now moved to a new main email account for all queries, feedback and comments secretary@ kingswellsconnected.org. uk although autoforwards are in place for the old email addresses until the full transition is complete. You can also contact us through our chatbot at www.kingswellsconnected. ord.uk, via the letter box outside the community centre or pop along to one of our monthly meetings. Dog Mess Despite repeated articles and pleas to the local community regarding dog mess this is an ongoing issue and there still appears to be a small minority of
dog owners who are unable or unwilling to pick up after their dogs. This is unacceptable and there is no excuse for not picking up after your pooch, we have multiple bins in Kingswells so dumping it responsibly is very easy! Bottom line this is a statutory offence and we encourage anyone who witnesses such irresponsible behaviour to report it to Aberdeen Council, on Contact Centre 03000 200 292 Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm or through the web site at https://www.aberdeencity. gov.uk/services/ environment/dog-wardens/ dog-fouling. Pork and Pineapple Kebabs A nice take on sweet ‘n’ sour pork, suitable for the barbecue Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 10-15 minutes Serves 4 Ingredients 400g Pork fillet 4 tbsp Light muscovado sugar 60ml Cider vinegar 1 tsp Asian fish sauce ½ Small pineapple, peeled, cored and cut into chunks (or use ready prepped fresh pineapple, drained well) 1 Pepper (any colour), deseeded and cut into squares Spanish onion, chopped into chunks Small bunch coriander, chopped (optional) To serve - Boiled rice or pitta pockets
Method Cut the pork into cubes. Heat the sugar and vinegar in a pan over a low heat until the sugar melts. Add the fish sauce and cool. Tip in the pork and mix well so that all the cubes are covered in sauce. Heat the barbecue, or a griddle pan or grill. Thread the pork and pineapple onto skewers, alternating pieces with the pepper and Spanish onion. You can use whatever onions you have but Spanish are more delicate in flavour and sweeten nicely when grilled. Barbecue or griddle the skewers for 3-4 mins each side (you may need to cook them for longer if griddling). Serve with rice or slide into pitta pockets

Children’s Physiotherapy The needs of children with neurological conditions differ from those of adults because the muscles, joints & nervous system of a child’s body are in the midst of the development process, and the physical needs & expectations of their bodies will alter as they continue to grow. Children’s Physiotherapists have an understanding of: - normal childhood milestones & developmental delay; -
childhood conditions & problems that may impact on physical development, wellbeing & participation;
- the impact that having a sick or disabled child has on family life; - the specific requirements of children such as attending school, relating to friends etc. - the need to place the child at the centre of treatment choices & planning; - how to tailor the physiotherapy approach according to the age & developmental stage of the child, for example incorporating physiotherapy into play. Specialist Neurological Physiotherapy for children encompasses physiotherapy for babies, children and teenagers who present a wide range of difficulties such as due to the various types of cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophies, brain injury, childhood stroke, spinal cord injury (including congenital injuries, e.g. spina bifida), as well as peripheral nerve injuries (e.g. Erb’s Palsy), less common neurological diagnoses and developmental delay. The aims of Specialist Neurological Physiotherapy for children are to: - provide a child-friendly approach to assessment & therapeutic interventions; - involve the child fully in all aspects of the physiotherapy sessions; - encourage optimal physical development, to enable maximal activity participation & to maximise long-term independence. Our children’s physiotherapy service is currently available in Aberdeen and surrounding areas. How Hypnotherapy Can Help With Chronic Pain One of the issues that I often support clients with is pain, especially persistent pain. Pain happens as a result of messages travelling through the nervous system. Normally, these messages are no longer transmitted once the original injury heals but sometimes, pain messages continue to be received by the brain. This is often the case with chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia, arthritis and Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Chronic pain can have a big effect on quality of life and can affect sleep and wellbeing. Living with chronic pain can be hugely stressful and can also contribute to anxiety and depression.
These days, hypnotherapy is recognised as an effective intervention for helping to treat chronic pain and can form part of a treatment plan to keep pain under control. One of the reasons it can do this involves access to the subconscious mind. The deep sense of relaxation that occurs during hypnosis brings the subconscious mind to the fore. It’s here that the thought processes linked to pain are formed and reinforced and it’s also the place in which they can be reframed. This can change your body’s perception of pain. No Milk Today
do not like the taste of cow’s milk.
Alternatives to Dairy Cow’s milk is considered dietary staple by many. It’s rich in protein and important vitamins and minerals, including calcium, phosphorus and B vitamins. But some people can’t or don’t drink cow’s milk at all due to personal preferences, dietary restrictions, allergies or intolerances. 2–3% of children under the age of three are allergic to cow’s milk although most grow out of it. The allergy can cause a range of symptoms, including rashes, upset tummies and even anaphylaxis. Lactose intolerance is very common. Lactose is a sugar found in cow’s milk. People with lactose intolerance cannot digest this sugar so it stays in the digestive tract causing gas and irritation. Vegans exclude all products from their diet that originate from animals, and some people simply

So, what is available for those who prefer a nondairy alternative? Soy Milk – Made with either soybeans or soy protein isolate, and often contains thickeners and vegetable oils. It typically has a mild and creamy flavour. It has a similar nutritional make-up to cow’s milk, and works best in cooking, in coffee and on cereal. Almond Milk (or other nut milks) – This is made with either whole almonds or almond butter and water (cashew, hazelnut and macadamia nut milks are also available). Nut milks have a light texture and a slightly sweet and nutty flavour. They contain fewer calories and fat thank

cow’s milk but are also significantly lower in protein and carbohydrates. They can be added to coffee and tea, used on cereal, mixed in smoothies and used as milk in desserts and baked goods. Coconut Milk Made from water and the white flesh of brown coconuts. It has a creamy texture and a sweet, subtle coconut flavour. It contains less fat than cow’s milk and significantly less protein and carbohydrates. It can be used on cereal and in smoothies and cooking. Oat Milk – Made from a mixture of oats and water. It is high in soluble fibre, which is good for gut health. It is naturally sweet with a mild flavour and can be used in cooking in the same
way as cow’s milk. It is also good for use on cereal or in smoothies. Rice Milk - Made from milled white or brown rice and water this is the least likely milk substitute to trigger allergies, which makes it a safe option for those with allergies or intolerances to dairy, gluten, soy or nuts. It is mild in taste and naturally sweet and is nice to drink on its own as well as in smoothies, or in desserts or over cereal. It is not a good choice for children or the elderly because of its low protein content, and it has a high glycaemic index so is not good for diabetics either. There is no one milk substitute that is ideal for everyone. The taste, nutrition and cost of these alternatives can vary considerably, so it is worth taking a while to experiment and find those that work best for you. By Louise Addison

Garden View – Sitting sustainably One of the great pleasures in life has to be sitting outside on a summer evening, glass of wine in hand, gazing in reverie at your precious plot. Like many gardeners I take a keen interest in environmental matters so it came as a shock when I read recently that that every year our tiny island imports more unsustainably produced wood than anywhere else in the world!
50
Y EXP EARS ERIE NCE
I was thrilled, therefore, to read about the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and their certification programme for sustainable produced and sourced wood? The FSC was founded in 1993, in response to public concern about deforestation. The council devised a wood-labelling scheme which allows a product to be traced right back down the supply chain from the consumer to its source.

stock products which are FSC approved. So we need to demand that they do. The world’s forests are in decline. Some tropical hardwoods are already on the verge of extinction, and temperate forests in the northern hemisphere are also suffering because of unregulated tree-felling.
Any product bearing the FSC logo is guaranteed to be from forests which are carefully managed to conserve biodiversity and support local communities.
As a gardener and lover of our environment I feel more comfortable knowing that I’m not contributing to the destruction of our planet. If you’re replacing your garden furniture this year, ask to see the FSC certified label. Happy gardening. By Rachael Leverton

News from Councillor Delaney... Longer days and better weather always lifts the spirits and gets us out and about a bit more. It also afforded myself and the family the opportunity to make use of the AWPR for the first time on a day trip south. So, although I’ve seen the benefits of reduced traffic elsewhere in the city as a result of the road opening, I had not fully experienced the benefits of making a long journey on it. Everyone’s been saying it just takes 15 minutes to get to Stonehaven… And it did! We really must do this more often. I mentioned some concerns about the Kingswells South Junction during peak times in the last issue so I’m pleased to say that matters have progressed. Transport Scotland have acknowledged the junction is not performing as intended and are working on an engineering solution to improve the situation. There’s also been much talk about how Lang Stracht and the A944 have got much busier since the opening of the AWPR, which is only to be expected given that these are the main arterial roads for accessing the AWPR. I have long argued that Lang Stracht needs to be widened along its length (where it still remains possible to do so), otherwise with the
26
Summerhill, Maidencraig and Countesswells sites feeding into the network in the coming years, this road will grind to a halt. A report looking at the roads hierarchy post AWPR is coming to committee early June and I am hopeful it will recognise the need to carry out major improvements to Lang Stracht. Sticking with transport, the number of passengers using the No 14 has risen significantly over the past year, much of which is attributable to the direct service into the city centre and the improved reliability of the service. Almost 400 passengers are now using the service on week days with 60% of people travelling at peak times. The Sunday service is currently funded by fines collected from drivers who flout bus lane regulations but this funding only runs to March 2020. It is hoped that the Sunday service can continue to be funded from within existing budgets but this will become clearer later on in the year. In the meantime, please keep using the service and if you don’t normally use it, please give it a try. The more people use it, the less it relies on subsidy and the greater the likelihood of the Sunday
service continuing. This will also improve the longer term prospects of the main service. On a completely different subject I have been working closely with Openreach to offer high speed fibre broadband to the remaining homes in Kingswells. A significant number of premises have been connected since the start of the year with only five properties within the village currently unable to receive the service. Work is ongoing to resolve this issue. There’s also a lack of capacity at cabinet 11 but this is being addressed and should be fully operational by July. After five years the end is finally in sight! Being the father of an 11 (soon to be 12) year old, my mind is currently focused on his transition from P7 to secondary school. As the end of term fast approaches, you have to wonder how prepared they are to go from being a big fish in a small pond to being a small fish in a large river! Having said that, transitional arrangements have been transformed since I was at school, which was back in prehistoric times if you believe my son! So I’m going to use this opportunity to end by wishing all Kingswells P7s well as they embark upon the next

chapter of life’s adventures. Kingswells School is a friendly, happy, respectful environment which encourages every pupil to achieve their potential and you’re going to miss all the teachers and the other staff. But don’t be sad, you’re moving on to bigger and better things where you’ll have even more opportunities and hopefully some fun along the way too. As my own son prepares to move on, I’ll be thinking of all the other P7s and I wish you well for the future. As always, please get in touch to raise any concerns you may have.
