My first year... This is the sixth issue of the community newsletter under the branch of gazette magazines. It has been a very exciting year for me. A huge thank you - as it has been the best magazine ever. You have all embraced the new look! You have been in touch and supplied us with some very local content. The distribution team have been AMAZING! So helpful and I truly appreciate all that you do for the newsletter. To the advertisers - a huge thank you – plus a special thank you also goes to those that continued to advertise despite me being an “unknown” source. What is on in Kingswells continues to grow, but I know that you all travel to go to classes out with the area, so I have started a list of what is going on in the surrounding area - it will build up over the next year, but please feel free to let me know of a group you attend regularly. Each year I support bling fling as it supports two local charities that I wish to help. It is a charity walk with sparkle and flare along the railway line from the Duthie Park. Nice easy walk with pampering at the end! Please see the poster to the right for more details. The Primary school has a bag2school date and the May Fair is coming up too. Woodburn Walkers is a local group which welcomes anyone over 50. We meet fortnightly on Tuesdays at Hazlehead Park by the bus shelter. From March to November we hire a coach thus enabling us to enjoy the great variety of landscapes in the north east- from the Moray coast, to the smaller hills and glens of Deeside and many lovely woodland walks. There is something for everybody. During the winter we choose local walks, each led by members who have planned out the walk in advance. These walks are free to our members and guests and can vary from 5 to 7 miles. There is always an option for those who would prefer a shorter walk. We are a cheerful, friendly group, so why not give us a call. Angela on 318734 and Frances on 821753 would be delighted to hear from you

Kingswells Community Council Countesswells A Development Framework and Phase 1 Masterplan has just recently been published for Countesswells. This will be a massive development comprising 3000 homes, employment land, schools, community facilities, shops and open spaces. It will develop in phases, probably over a 10 to 15 year period, with around 250 new homes being built each year. Test drilling has already started on site. As we reported previously, the main access road into Countesswells will be from the Green Hedges roundabout on the A944 which will undergo major restructuring. The existing road from Kingswells roundabout to Cults will be kept open until the new access road is constructed. In the interim period, there is likely to be more traffic congestion at peak times on the Cults road until it is eventually changed to a bus-only and local access route. The first of two new primary schools will not be opened until 400 homes have been sold. Until then, it is likely that children will attend Braeside Primary School (off Craigton Road), presently occupied by children from the Hamilton School. Secondary age pupils will probably attend Hazlehead Academy until the new secondary school is built. Countesswells will have various impacts on Kingswells, including positive ones. Prime Four Aberdeen City Planners have approved the new access road into Prime Four from the Kingswells perimeter road (the C89). This will involve a new junction controlled by traffic lights just north of the contractors’ huts on the C89. Drivers will therefore have to face two sets of traffic lights between the Kingswells roundabout and the northern exit to Kingswood Drive. The Community Council warned planners that this new junction could simply cause more congestion on the C89, increase rat-running through Kingswells village to avoid the traffic lights, and affect road safety. Yet again, however, local knowledge and community concerns have been ignored.

Main Issues Report In the last edition of KCN, we encouraged people to respond to this important report that will help shape the future of Aberdeen between 2016 and 2021. Kingswells Community Council’s own response can be seen on our website at www.kwells.org Litter Litter continues to be a significant problem in parts of Kingswells. The strong winds we’ve been having certainly haven’t helped. Drum Group has tried to clean up the area between Prime Four and the park-and-ride. However, the issues in this area are ongoing and we still await a proper solution from the Council to control litter around the recycling bins. Other problem areas are the woods and green spaces beside the shops and school playground. Sadly, most of the litter in this area is produced by children and young people. KCC welcomes contacts from any willing volunteers or agencies who can help us tidy up the mess. At the end of the day, though, it’s down to individual responsibility. If everyone just picked up a couple of pieces of litter each day, we would soon fix the problem.

PRIMARY SCHOOL SCHOOL PLAYGROUND – IMPROVING OUR COMMUNITY AREAS Over the past 6 months there has been a significant amount of time and money invested in making improvements to the school playground. Most of us have no idea of the cost or efforts involved in this type of work so we thought we would share some information with the local community so everyone can appreciate the true scale of this work. We removed the old wooden benches and replaced them with splinter free metal seating. The Pupil Council was involved in choosing a new piece of play equipment and we installed a monkey climbing frame onto a soft surface. As well as having all the playground markings redone we added some cycle markings, which are proving useful already for the upper school bike ability sessions. The conservation area surrounding the pond had become unsafe and no longer accessible for health and safety reasons so major works have to be completed to get this area suitable for use again – we are delighted to report that there are now an abundance of frogs in the pond and lots of classes will be visiting this area in the fine weather. Much of the timber framed pergola area needed replacing and this has now been painted as well as flowers and shrubs planted as part of a Subsea7 team building day which saw about 20 members of staff giving up their time to help us make our playground a brilliant community space. This cost of this work, and the development of an outdoor classroom in an inner courtyard of the school, came to over £50,000. WE could not have completed these significant improvements without the support of Aberdeen Forward, Premier Oil, Dandara, Subsea7 and Apache as well as funding from the PTA. Many thanks from Kingswells Primary School to EVERYONE who has contributed time, effort and financial support.
Kingswells School Primary PTA Update We have had a successful fundraising year so far! Our latest event, the Race Night in March, raised £2057. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to that total. Our next Bags-2-School clothes collection is May 6th - bags of donated clothes and soft goods can be left outside the Community Centre before 9am on the day. The annual May Fair takes place on Sat 24th May 11am - 2.30pm with all the usual stalls, games and BBQ lunch! Donations of Chocolate for Chocolate Tombola stall or a bottle for bottle stall can be handed into the school office the week beginning Mon 19th May. We hope to see you then to enjoy a fun day!

BucksburnAcademy news Rock Challenge 2014 Success On the 8th March over 80 pupils from Bucksburn Academy competed against 11 other schools at Rock Challenge 2014 at the AECC. After months of hard work and rehearsals the school presented their dance and drama production – Toxic – in front of a sold out audience. The piece is a reworking of the Medusa myth in the form of a computer game where Medusa represents all that is toxic in society. And what a night it was with Bucksburn Academy placing in the top five for the first time ever. Finishing fourth out of the eleven schools and picking up an incredible 9 awards for different categories including inclusion, dramatic concept, stage craft and others this was an amazing achievement for the school and one of which we are very proud. The standard of performance and talent on display was of such a high standard and there was real excitement amongst the pupils and staff when the results were announced. This week pupils have been showing the DVD of the performance and talking about the experience at special assemblies. Careers Fair 2014 On the 6th March the school held our annual Careers Fair which is organised by the Parent Council. This year it was bigger and better than ever with
over 40 employers, training providers, and further and higher education representatives on hand to give advice to pupils and parents about potential careers in their areas, to inspire pupils to think about the opportunities that are available to them and to talk about entry routes into their sector. This is all part of the school’s approach to raising aspirations and supporting pupils plan their learner journey through and beyond school. A high number of pupils and parents braved the elements to make the most of this opportunity and the feedback from the exhibitors was very positive about the good questions they were being asked by the pupils. A special thanks to the members of the Parent Council who have so much of their time to ensuring this event goes from strength to strength. Generation 2014 Many of you will have heard two of our pupils on Radio Scotland or seen them on TV recently. Martin, mentioned above and Nicole Fraser have been selected alongside a small group of other students from across Scotland to give their opinions on a regular basis on the referendum campaign and what it means for young people. Both will be eligible to vote in the referendum for the first time. They have now both appeared on TV and on Radio Scotland
and the school had received from very positive comments on the mature and well considered views they have been expressing. Scottish Natural Heritage Competiton Success Three students in S5/S6 have won prizes in the above schools photography competition. Hannah Davidson won the S4-S6 Landscape category, Alix Adams won the S4-S6 wildlife category and Indya Gray was runner up in the Wildlife Category. The prize was a great opportunity to take part in a workshop run by the SNH wildlife photographer Lorne Gill held at Muir of Dinnet. Not only were the pupils able to hone their photography skills they also had a great time taking photos in spectacular scenery. Their winning entries will form part of an exhibition in a city venue later this year

News from Councillor Delaney Spring has sprung and the mild weather continues as I write this. It’s been an unusually wet winter, but the absence of snow has been a blessing, not that my six year old son Carter would agree! There’s much going on in our area as usual, though much of my efforts have been concentrated on improving both public safety and access to bus services on the A944. I’ve put forward a proposal calling for bus stops at both sides of the road at both Kingswells Church and the Five Mile Garage with lay-bys and pedestrian crossings. I’m pleased to say committee have since agreed to look into the matter and bring a report back to their June 2014 meeting. I wish to express my sincere thanks to the parents of Ben Land, who was sadly killed crossing the A944 at the Church last summer, for lending their support to this proposal. Thanks also to everyone else who has been supportive to date, including fellow councillors on the committee. Hopefully the Council will identify the resources needed to take this forward. Also on the A944, committee has agreed to put proposals out to consultation on reducing the speed limit on this road to 40mph from the new Westhill junction to Ardene House. Along with previous proposals this effectively reduces the limit to 40mph from Kingswells to Westhill, which is what I’ve been campaigning for in excess of two years now. There are various stages to this process and, if finally approved at the end of these consultations, the change is unlikely to happen for another 12-18 months. On a completely different subject, there seems to be an unusually high number of blocked drains across the ward. I’m unsure if the Council has scaled back the maintenance of drains, but this is definitely a growing problem. It’s not pleasant seeing dirty water flowing out of blocked drains and probably not very sanitary either. I’ve arranged for quite a few to be unblocked, but if I’ve missed any please let me know. The same goes for potholes, which are increasing despite the absence of a real winter. Although all our roads could be better maintained, it would appear that Broaddykes Drive and parts of Kingswood Drive are causing the greatest concerns in Kingswells
at the moment. Broaddykes Drive really needs to be resurfaced but I’m afraid it hasn’t made it onto this year’s list of resurfacing works. Please continue to report all new defects to the Council for repair and let me know too. It’s only when the Council is made aware of issues that repairs are carried out, so please let’s all do our bit. As for the poor quality of some of these repairs, well that’s another matter! I’ve been aware of damage to the consumption dyke beside the school for some months and talks are ongoing with Historic Scotland regarding its restoration. Unfortunately this is known to be a lengthy process, given past experiences. Approval to carry out works is then followed by the need to identify funding and suitably skilled tradesmen to carry out the work. There’s some things you can’t hurry, as much as you’d like to, but this is progressing, albeit slowly! Finally, there’s no further updates on the “go live” date for Superfast Broadband but the good news is that the website still says June 2014 for completion of the upgrade at the exchange, so we’re not looking at any slippage in dates... yet! All being well, the “go live” date remains some time between June and December this year, though some parts of Kingswells could be operational before others. In other words, it won’t be operational everywhere on the same day. Orders are not yet being accepted, but you can get the latest position at http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/ where-and-when/ so it’s worth checking out from time to time. That’s about it for this month. My surgeries are held on the first Tuesday of each month at Kingswells Community Centre. News from Westminster Budget 2014: Pensions In his budget the Chancellor announced plans to give people over the age of 55, who are part of a defined contributory pension scheme, the option to take their savings as a lump sum, rather than having to purchase an annuity. This will be welcomed by many as clearly the annuities market does not offer value for money. I would support proposals which, theoretically, allow more choice and flexibility. The proposals are not due to come in effect until April 2015, subject to consultation. Consideration should be given to whether the plans benefit lower and middle income tax payers. The Chancellor has insisted that a statutory right to guidance via pension
providers will be introduced but, it remains to be seen what safeguards will be in place. Of course there will those who still wish to purchase an annuity, and it is likely these reforms will drive up prices, meaning that this option delivers even less value for money. In addition, wider reform is needed as the budget made no mention of the fundamental issue of the need for a cap on pension provider fees and charges. Lower Deeside Community Association In 2011 Aberdeen City Council proposed that in future community centres should be run by voluntary committees with minimal assistance from the Council.
At present the following activities are taking place: Adult Badminton Italian Language Junior Badminton Italian Cookery Over 30s Football ‘ Art – Drawing and Painting Forthcoming classes Tai Chi (from 22 April) Holiday Spanish (from 24 April)
Representatives from various user groups in the community, including voluntary sports clubs, breakfast and after-school clubs, adult education classes and the Cults 050 group have met since then on a monthly basis to try to build a sound foundation for future activities.
It is hoped to set up classes in other hobbies/interests at some future date, depending on feedback and available space.
After a complex and protracted process, the Lower Deeside Community Association was finally constituted and is now pleased to be able to offer new courses to the community, and to increase the use of the excellent facilities at Cults Academy Community Centre.
We look forward to hearing your ideas and suggestions, so that the community can make optimum use of the premises at Cults Academy Community Centre.
The committee would also like to enrol new members and hear from individuals who might be interested in running courses.
A minibus is available for hire to community groups.

TODDLERS
The Toddler Group runs on a Tuesday and Thursday at the Community Centre, 9.30-11.15, we welcome those with children from birth up to starting school age! It’s a great way to get to know people and great way for the kids to burn off some energy! The group is run by a volunteer committee and we always welcome more members and anyone wishing to help out, especially with the parties that we hold! Aberdeen Orpheus Choir under their Conductor Jane Murray with Erika Fairhead as Accompanist are holding their Summer Concert in the Cowdray Hall, Aberdeen on Friday, 30th May at 7.30 p.m. A varied and interesting programme has been chosen to include “Northern Lights” by Norwegian Composer Ola Gjeilo, extracts from Hummel’s Mass in D flat, and Five Hebrew Love Songs by Eric Whitacre in which Violinist Megan Cormack will accompany the Choir. A selection of popular music will also be performed. Guest Artistes for the evening will be the popular Bon-Accord Silver Band Quintet. The Bucksburn Community Policing Team continued to proactively police Kingswells and the surrounding areas with the aim of keeping your community safe. In recent months, there are three main areas of concern raised by the y o u R p R E S c R i p t i o N i N D E S i g N E R S u N g L A S S E S community and these relate to home security including theft S t a r t i n g a t £9 9 of motor cars, speeding motorists through the village of Kingswells and illegal dumping of rubbish.

The importance of securing your home, garage and car as part of good housekeeping measures cannot be over emphasised to prevent opportunist crime. House doors, garages doors and cars left open or insecure make you and your property an easy target. Please lock yours house and garage doors particular at night and car doors when left unattended. I urge all residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to Police Scotland at the time of the incident. You may have seen your local police officers carrying out spending enforcement patrols within Kingswells, particularly within the vicinity of Kingswells Primary School. Unfortunately there are motorists who drive at excessive speed through Kingswells and we will continue to carryout speed enforcement patrols throughout the spring and summer months. Fly tipping is becoming an increasing problem at Kirkhill Forest and other areas surrounding Kingswells. It is the illegal dumping of waste – from a bin bag of household rubbish to large quantities of tyres or construction waste. It is a serious environmental crime and can pose a risk to humans and wildlife.

Local Representatives and grant applications wanted for New Community Trust Kingswells Community Council is seeking local residents to be part of the Prime Four Community Trust Panel which will decide how a new local community fund, The Prime Four Community Trust, should be distributed. The Prime Four Community Trust has been established to benefit local charitable groups operating in the Kingswells’ Community Council Area. Funding for the Trust is being provided through Drum Property Group and will be administered through Foundation Scotland with all decisions being made via the Community Trust Panel. Fife Hyland, Director at Drum Property Group said, “Drum is delighted to establish the Prime Four Community Trust with Kingswells Community Council and Foundation Scotland. As developers of Prime Four Business Park, we have fostered productive and open working relationships with the local community, and funding the Trust will directly benefit local initiatives within the village and surrounding area.” Kingswells Community Council is overseeing the recruitment of the local Community Panel and it is intended that the final make up of the Panel will include both representatives of the Community Council and from local groups and interested individuals who reside in the area. It is expected that the Panel will be served by at least one Community Council representative for every two representatives from other local bodies and individuals. Aberdeenshire Deputy Provost Norman Smith who was at the awards ceremony said: “I would like to congratulate all those at the shed on winning this well deserved award as well as those at the council and in the community who helped in establishing the shed. It has changed the lives of the people who attend there. “Hopefully in a few years men’s sheds will be common place not just in Aberdeenshire but throughout Scotland.” Some of the projects that have been taken on by people at the shed, include the restoration of a standalone engine and water pump, a ‘friendship bench’ being constructed for a local primary school, and a set of raised flowerbeds for a retired local gardener. The men who use the shed have also carried out a variety of personal projects, from boating chairs to camping boxes. Chair of Social Work and Housing committee, Cllr Karen Clark said: “The men’s shed is the type of community project we are keen to promote. It allows retired people to use the skills they have gained to help others and it enables people to remain active in to later life. “Aberdeenshire Change Fund has agreed to fund a post that will aim to build on the achievements of Westhill Men’s Shed and to help other communities to establish a similar project near them. Plans are currently in place for sheds in six communities across Aberdeenshire with hopefully more to come.” Members of the Westhill Men’s Shed Board have been travelling to other parts of Scotland to help people set up sheds in their area. With the help of Age Scotland there are now more than 30 sheds planned throughout Scotland. Chairman of Westhill & District Men’s Shed, Marty Kehoe, said: “The Men’s Shed has been well received in Westhill by offering many opportunities for local men to get together, work on projects, share ideas and have a satisfying and enjoyable time. “Although our shed is the first in Scotland, visits from staff from voluntary agencies around the country have been impressed with our set up, have recognised the benefits for health and well-being that this kind of facility brings to its members and are looking to set up sheds in their own communities.” Men coming to the shed do not require any prior training or expertise. Whilst the shed does have men with a lifetime of craft, engineering, and teaching experience, there are also amateur DIY enthusiasts and men who have worked in non-manual jobs. Councillor Ron McKail who helped in getting the Men’s Shed up and running said: “The success of the Men’s Shed has shown just how much the local community needed this type of project. The community has benefited from the work the men are doing and it has improved the health and wellbeing of men in the area at the same time.

Male Grooming Guys! Personal hygiene is not just for women! Facial hair: If you like a beard or a spot of stubble acquaint yourself with a beard trimmer. A welltrimmed beard is a thing of beauty; an unkempt one can result in passers-by throwing coins at you. And beard trimmers are not just for beards; there is generally hair elsewhere which could benefit from a little ‘management’ too! While we’re on the subject, nose-clippers are cheap; there is no excuse for furry nostrils! Nails: Gross nails are a no-no. A soft nail-brush and some precision clippers teamed with hand cream work wonders. If your hands are in a bad way consider a man-icure. Don’t scoff, a therapist will slough off calluses, push-back your cuticles and buff your nails to a perfect length. Don’t stop at your hands either: feet benefit from TLC too. Teeth: A great smile falls flat if your breath smells. Brush and floss every day because plaque is persistent. The sticky film of bacteria re-forms within a 24-hour period. Decay means expensive and possibly painful dental treatment. Plus you never know when you might be called upon to kiss the girl (or guy) of your dreams. Body odour: We all have our own body odour, even when we’re clean and fresh. The term BO generally refers to Bad Body Odour (perhaps it should be renamed BBO!). Sadly men are more prone to it because we sweat more. Fresh sweat doesn’t smell unpleasant; it’s bacteria which cause the unpleasant niff. Spraying yourself with body spray doesn’t fool anyone. Launder clothes regularly, shower daily and use a good quality anti-perspirant. If you’d like to wear aftershave but don’t know which scent suits you, take a female friend along to the counter and ask for her opinion. Serves 4 Ingredients 2 small monkfish tails skinned and off the bone 12 slices of Parma ham 3 teaspoons pink peppercorns and 3 teaspoons cracked black pepper (mixed together) 2 medium fennel bulbs 150ml white wine 50ml Dry Martini 1 medium onion finely chopped 1 large red pepper finely chopped 4 garlic cloves chopped A few sprigs of thyme stripped 1 chicken stock cube 500ml double cream Method Cut monkfish into 12 batons (3 per person) and roll lightly in the peppercorn mix. Wrap 1 baton in 1 slice of Parma ham and set aside. Cut fennel into half then cut each half into 4, then fry in a roasting tin on the stove with a drizzle of olive oil until lightly coloured. Add half the white wine, cover with tin foil and bake in the oven at 210c or gas mark 7 for 10-15 mins until cooked ( it should still have a bite to it).

Place the monkfish into a lightly greased baking tray, cover with foil and place in the oven for 10 mins. Meanwhile fry the onions, pepper, garlic and thyme until softened. Add the remainder of the white wine, Martini and stock cube then reduce by half. Add the cream and simmer until thickened, stirring continuously.

Once monkfish is ready lightly grill until Parma ham is crispy.

Arrange the fennel in the middle of the plate followed by the sauce, then neatly arrange monkfish on top. Garnish with the fennel tips and a wedge of lemon. Serve with new potatoes and vegetables.

Electrolysis - the permanent removal of unwanted hair Unwanted facial & body hair is a common problem affecting as many as 80% of ladies in varying degrees. Most areas can be permanently cleared of unwanted hairs with electrolysis including hair on the upper/lower lip, chin, cheeks, neck, chest, abdomen, underarms, bikini line and the eyebrows.
A very fine needle (equal diameter to the hair to be treated) is inserted down the side of the follicle and a mild current is applied. This causes localised removal of unwanted hair destruction at the root of the hair allowing the hair to be lifted out of the follicle. However, canine pets have a knack of finding chocolates and eating very large quantities at one time! If a large breed dog eats a relatively small quantity of milk chocolate, the effects may be minimal, with just a slight stomach upset. However, a small dog can easily develop signs of chocolate toxicity from eating milk chocolate and larger breeds may develop problems if they eat a lot of milk chocolate or if they eat even a small quantity of dark or baking chocolate. Dark and baking chocolate contain a higher percentage of theobromine, which is the chemical responsible for signs of chocolate toxicity. Symptoms of chocolate toxicity range from a mild stomach upset with vomiting and diarrhoea, through to restlessness and hyperactivity, in-coordination, muscle spasms and seizures.
