Volunteers Wanted PROJECT TITLE: Fish oil and muscle function in older people We are looking for women and men over the age of 65 years of age to participate in the above study. The study will last for 18 weeks with exercise sessions two times a week. We will monitor changes in markers of health and the adaptive response to exercise. Overall we aim to determine whether fish oil consumption can enhance the health improving effects of exercise. Love is in the air ... Well it will be on the14th of this month for some! Already we are in the second month of the year and enjoying a very different winter to normal. Very pleasant. Here’s hoping that the summer month’s will be as indulgent as last year’s, sheer bliss. I have a jam packed issue for you. If you are 65 or over you are very much in demand. Whether it be to learn about the ipad with the help of the children at the Primary or to take part in a study on muscle function. If you like to sing then why not join the Sweet Adelines, they are recruiting now! If you just like to listen then the Morven Chorus are celebrating their 50th Anniversary in March at the Phoenix Hall at Bieldside. Worth attending just to see the hall - it is amazing. Glad to say that news from the Police Report is crime is down in Kingswells - well done everybody. By locking things up you’ve cut the crime rate. Our feature is being your own interior designer - not everyone’s desire but we have a good supply of advertisers that can help. Kingswells Community Council We start 2014 without Barrie Buchan, who recently stood down as our long-serving chairperson. Barrie worked tirelessly and with great dedication to improving our community. She will be sadly missed on the Community Council. Meantime, Barrie will continue to work with others on improving the village centre. Apart from Barrie, two other members will soon be leaving us, also for personal reasons. Although we can still function as a community council, we really need some new members. If you are interested in serving your community and are willing to give up a little of your free time, please consider joining us. You will be made very welcome. If you want a flavour of what we do, or have an issue about your area you want to raise, please come along as a member of the public to one of our meetings. They are held in the Community Centre at 8pm on the second Monday of each month. We have a very informative website at www.kwells.org that keeps residents up-to-date with key issues affecting Kingswells. For those without a computer, we have a notice board and post-box outside the Community Centre. In 2013, the Community Council dealt with a whole range of matters including local planning and the environment, policing, traffic and road safety, the bus service, road surfaces, the village centre and green spaces, and promoting local events. We had regular contacts with various departments in Aberdeen City Council and Drum Group (Prime Four). Relationships with the Police and Councillors David Cameron and Steve Delaney, who attend our monthly meetings, are very positive. Whilst many of our contacts with Aberdeen City Council staff

were positive and productive, relationships with the Planning Department remain poor. Like other community councils in Aberdeen, we find that our carefullyconsidered views on local planning matters are routinely down-played or completely ignored. This is causing an increasing amount of frustration and anger and we hope that the situation can be improved in 2014.
Newhills Expansion This major development will affect north Kingswells especially. Members of KCC attended the public consultation and submitted comments on the proposals. The Kingswells to Newhills road will require upgrading to allow for the likely increase in traffic, even after the AWPR is built. The Roads Department have assured us, however, that no new road will be built across countryside from Newhills to the Lang Stracht.
West Huxterstone Sadly, our objections to aspects of the Stewart Milne development were ignored. Road access from the Kingswells end of the Lang Stracht has been approved, three-storey townhouses will be included, and an underground drainage system will damage the ecosystem beside the Den Burn.
Prime Four Like many Kingswells residents, we are horrified by the height of the buildings at the upper end of the site. Whilst KCC did not object to the business park in principle, we strongly objected to the visual intrusion of some of the buildings. Drum Group has submitted plans for a new access road, controlled by lights, off the Kingswells perimeter road. KCC has objected to this on

road safety grounds as it will come after a blind summit. It will also breach the previously agreed green space between the buildings and the historic consumption dyke.
Roundabouts The Green Hedges roundabout will see major changes in future to serve developments at Maidencraig and also provide the main access to the new community at Countesswells. The Kingswells roundabout will probably be less affected, although the present road to Cults may become a bus-only route serving Countesswells. The Arnhall roundabout at Westhill is being converted to a junction controlled by lights.
Road safety Police are monitoring speeding and other traffic offences around Kingswells. Particular concerns to KCC are drivers who persistently ignore the 40 mph and 50 mph limits on the A944, and rat-running through Kingswells at peak times. There have been potentially dangerous cases of motorists ignoring keep left signs on Kingswood Drive to overtake buses that are taking on passengers; also, van drivers wrongly exiting the parkand-ride onto the perimeter road instead of the A944. Parking around
the school remains an ongoing issue despite constant pleas on health grounds to encourage children to walk or cycle to school.
Park-and-Ride KCC has made strong representations to our councillors and Drum Group to sort out the serious litter problems at the park-and-ride. The main issues are misuse and poor management of the recycling facilities, and waste dumped by contractors working on Prime Four. Wind-blown and dumped litter is now scattered around the surrounding green areas and Den Burn. This situation is a blight on our community and completely unacceptable.
Next Local Development plan
asks you various questions about the future of Aberdeen. Aberdeen City Council is recommending no further developments meantime in Kingswells, other than those already set out in the 2012 plan. Developers can, of course, still object to this.

PRIMARY SCHOOL Charity fundraising with the Pupil Council at Kingswells School In December all year groups were involved in performing 5 different shows with 9 different casts, so we asked all the parents and relatives to come along to watch the performances. It was great fun but it meant a lot of planning and rehearsals beforehand. Once the shows were finished we asked the audience to donate money to three charities, chosen by the Pupil Council. The charities were CLIC Sargent, Friends of Hazlehead and the Philippines disaster fund. We collected the money, counted it out and then we decided that we would split the money evenly between the three charities. Each one received a cheque for £600 and with a little bit left over for the school. The P6s and P7s also did an extra performance of their show “Home for Christmas” as we invited some of the elderly members of our community to come and have some mince pies and refreshments at the school before watching the performance. We are now planning our next school fundraiser which will be for the ARCHIE Foundation’s 10 year anniversary. The theme is a pyjama day and each pupil will be asked to bring a £1 pound donation. We are asking everyone in the school to come wearing their pyjamas or onesies and their donation will go to the Children’s Hospital in Aberdeen. Our target is to get everyone involved, raise as much money as we can and see the whole school dressed up in their PJs!

We were very proud for two of the students who received certificates of excellence and certificates

their own skills to use as part of a team, approaching problems from different perspectives. By the end of each session there were lots of tired brains but smiling faces.
Following on from winning the Aberdeen city heat of the Enterprising Maths competition four of our students represented Aberdeen at the national final at the Glasgow Science Centre where they did very well although did not make the winner’s podium this time round

News from Councillor Delaney I’d like to start off this month by paying tribute to Mrs Barrie Buchan who stood down from Kingswells Community Council a few weeks ago. Barrie was an active member for more than a decade and served as Chair for most of that time. She worked tirelessly for the village, always willing to work with people (as challenging as I’m sure that was at times) to achieve the best possible outcomes for the community. Barrie headed up a strong team and it was everyone pulling together which resulted in so much getting done. She was great at keeping everyone on board. Having said that, Barrie always took on more than her share and led by example. I know those who remain on the community council will continue to carry on their good work collectively, but there’s no getting away from it, she will be missed. I’d like to extend my thanks to Barrie for her many, many years of hard work representing the interests of Kingswells. I’d also like to pay tribute to Mr Alan Stott, another community council stalwart, who retired in January after many loyal years serving the local community. Alan was always “on the ball” and ready to challenge. He too built up good strong working relationships with individuals and organisations, to the betterment of the village. I would like to wish Alan a long and happy retirement.

On a completely different subject, I doubt anyone missed the announcement about the rollout of high speed fibre optic broadband for Kingswells. No specifics were given for Kingswells, but there’s map on http://www.digitalscotland.org/ media/16354/ros_171013.pdf which indicates (according to my reading of it) that Kingswells is timetabled for July – December 2014. The detail on the map is pretty poor and timescales are only indicative, so check it out for yourself and remember to check the website regularly for updates. Work has already started by way of the laying the fibre optic cabling along the A944 from Aberdeen to Westhill and an influx of BT Openreach vans in the village, so it’s all looking positive for a “live” date which is sooner rather than later. Some people have been understandably been querying why we can’t just have a decent speed on normal broadband as they don’t need the more expensive fibre optic option. Unfortunately this cannot be achieved without building a telephone exchange at Kingswells as the current difficulties are down to the length of cabling running from Westhill to Kingswells. The short answer is that there’s available funding for high speed fibre optic broadband but none is on offer to upgrade the older broadband technologies. Moving on, an issue which has been causing particular concern has been localised flooding, with the Newhills Road and Blackburn Road having exhibited significant issues, both of which have now hopefully been resolved. Please continue to report such issues as they are often down to blocked drains and reasonably easy to resolve. There have also been ongoing issues with littering at the Park & Ride site. Whilst the site has received at bit of a tidy up, there are (at time of writing) still localised areas which are totally unacceptable. Much of the litter consists of food and drink containers and there’s been gloves, safety boots and other materials which appear to be associated with the adjacent construction site. This has been raised in the strongest of terms with the developers and the Council has been monitoring the site. There’s been some delay regarding the outcome of the Safety Audit undertaken on the Kingswells Roundabout. I’ve had a few queries recently asking what has happened with this as it was expected a few months ago. Suffice to say the Council now has the findings of the independent audit and will be discussing these with the developer. Hopefully I’ll be in a position to offer an update on any proposed changes in the next Focus, otherwise this will be posted on my website. That’s about it for this month. News from Westminster Helicopter transport is vital to the offshore oil and gas industry and the only viable means of transferring workers to and between installations. However, recent major incidents such as the crash in August 2013 off the coast of Shetland, which claimed the lives of 4 workers, serve as a constant reminder of the dangers inherent in the industry and the fact that despite huge leaps forward in health and safety, there should never be room for complacency. Since the crash in August 2013 I have been lobbying the Government about the need for a full independent Public Inquiry into all aspects of helicopter transport in the industry. I welcome the inquiries which have already been announced, and I acknowledge the role of the CAA as the regulator. However, I do not think that their role can be scrutinised properly if they are the very body responsible for the inquiry. The fact that we have had five helicopter ditchings in the last four years, with twenty
fatalities, as well as the numerous other incidents, is a major cause for concern. Campaigns such as Unite’s ‘Back Home Safe’ have shown that there is also significant concern within the workforce. Therefore it is important to assess the realities of the situation faced by our offshore workers. I know that in these austere times there are reservations about the potential cost. However, I believe a full independent public inquiry is the only way to ensure safety and restore confidence within the industry. The intensity of the treatments went up and down during the course of the six sessions. By session three I was starting to notice a distinct improvement to my skin. The Walk Aberdeen Programme provides short, community based walks at venues across Aberdeen with trained walk leaders. The walks are different from your longer more serious walking groups, instead they are designed for those who can’t manage fast or far but are still keen to be sociable and walk as part of a group with all the support this offers. No-one gets left behind so come and give it a try. Walking is a great activity to maintain or regain functional health and there is plenty of support available to take those first steps. Around Britain 5 British Islands 1. Piel - Piel is the smallest of the four inhabited Islands of Furness that lie off the coast of Cumbria. Whilst the largest of these islands, Walney, is England’s eighth biggest and has a population of over 10,000, Piel is just 8 hectares in size and has a permanent population comprising the landlord – known as the ‘King of Piel’ – of the island’s Grade II listed Ship Inn. 2. Gairsay - Gairsay has a population of just 3, making it one of the least populated of all of Scotland’s offshore islands. Nevertheless, it is officially permitted by the Royal Mail to produce its own stamps. 3. Lundy - A little over one square mile in size, Lundy lies 12 miles off the north coast of Devon in the centre of the Bristol Channel. Despite its relative isolation and small size, Lundy has its own pub, shops and church, produces its own stamps, and has a resident population of 28. 4. The Calf of Man - Aside from the Isle of Man itself, the only other inhabited island in the Man group is the Calf of Man, a square-mile islet lying just off its southernmost tip. A census in 2006 recorded a population here of just 2 – namely the wardens of an RSPB bird observatory opened in 1962. 5. Brownsea - Brownsea is the largest of the dozen or so islands found in Poole Harbour in Dorset. My teams have been working hard for the benefit of our communities and as a result we have seen considerable decreases in the antisocial behavior, public nuisance calls and priority crimes such as vehicle crime. These are the crimes which affect each and every one of you. Clearly messages regarding home security and that of your cars have been taken on board and as a result Kingswells has become less of a target. Historically at this time of the year we have seen a few fire calls and some vandalism reports. It goes without saying that, if you see somebody carrying out these acts, please let us know so we can tackle it at the time and take the appropriate action. A long standing complaint in the Kingswells area is the speed of vehicles travelling through the village. Recent speed surveys have confirmed this problem and we will work tirelessly to tackle it. Other issues commonly reported are: Parents/Grandparents/ Carers etc. stopping in inappropriate places to drop their children off at school. This may be on a pavement, at the school gates on the yellow zigzags, in the bus stop and many more. The Police Service of Scotland is committed to ‘keeping people safe’ and the safety of children going to and from school is of paramount importance. We will actively target those who put children’s lives at risk and ask you to work with us in this task. Please ensure it is a safe and appropriate place to stop and drop off, ensure you are not putting your child or that of another at risk, by where you stop and please take time on your approach to the school. My team in the Bucksburn CPT are keen to work with our local communities for the benefit of your community but when necessary we will be robust in our policing approach. Be your own interior designer Whether you’re planning a room from scratch or freshening up an existing scheme, it can be hard to know where to start. The answer is to think like a professional, says Katherine Sorrell It can be a tricky business, interior designing. There’s much more to it than pretty colours and nice cushions. Creating a successful space involves a complex blend of practical and aesthetic considerations, from flooring that’s hard-wearing and looks great to lighting that illuminates the right areas and helps create an appropriate mood. As well as the nitty gritty of wiring and plumbing, there’s wallpaper, paint colours and fabric to select, window treatments to decide on, storage to incorporate, furniture to choose and finishing touches to arrange. How can you ensure that you do it correctly? Never fear: it’s simply a question of taking things step by step, using a straightforward, logical approach. As all professional interior designers know, careful planning is invaluable in helping firm up your ideas, work out your budget and timetable and, above all, avoid expensive mistakes. So before you rush in with your paintbrush, spend a little time with some graph paper, a sharp pencil, scissors and swatches. They really are the secret to successful interior design. First comes space planning. Measure your room accurately and draw a plan to scale on graph paper, marking in windows, doors, fireplaces, fitted cupboards, pipes, radiators,
plug sockets, light fittings and so on. Consider the room’s size and shape, and its architectural style. Will they affect the way in which you decorate? Are there special considerations, such as lack of space or light, or an important original feature? At this stage, consider whether it would be helpful to move a wall, pipe or radiator, enlarge a window, hang the door the other way around or add extra plug sockets or light switches. Perhaps you can conceal wiring or pipework, or build in some extra storage? Once you have gone through all the options – consulting a structural engineer if your changes are major ones – you can draw up a final plan. Next, plan the positions of major items of furniture. On a separate sheet of graph paper, sketch the approximate shapes of your furnishings, as if you were looking at them from above, using the same scale as your room plan. Then simply cut them out, place them on your master plan and assess how well they fit in to the space, ensuring that you allow enough activity room between and around them. Think about who uses the room, when and how. On a practical level, is it going to work? Move your ‘furniture’ around as necessary and, eventually, the optimum arrangement will become apparent. You should now have the basics of a functional, comfortable room. To complement the floorplan and ensure that all the decorative elements of a room work together, professional designers create a ‘sample board’: a visual memo of all the different pieces that go towards making up the room. Before you start, you’ll need to find some images – printed off websites, cut out of magazines or brochures, or your own photographs or sketches – of your proposed furniture,

Then, take a large piece of neutralcoloured card as a base, and arrange the images or swatches on it. It helps if you place the samples roughly in accordance with where they will be in the room – flooring at the bottom, pendant lights near the top and furniture in the middle, for example. With all the ingredients together, you’ll have a really effective overview of how colours, patterns, shapes and textures work together, and can easily move things around, take them away or add to them. Are there too many smooth textures or is there too much of one colour? Do your patterns clash or your furniture styles jar? With a well thought-out sample board you can easily assess the overall effect.

Glasshouse art, craft & design fair to showcase contemporary art from across Scotland
The unique setting of a greenhouse on the outskirts of the town’s international subsea campus will be the unconventional location for the GLASSHOUSE event on March 22 and 23. The contemporary art, craft and design fair will showcase the high-quality enterprises of local, national and international visual artists, designers and makers and provide an opportunity for some of Aberdeenshire’s most exciting creative makers to sell their work. The GLASSHOUSE art, craft and design fair is being delivered by Be Part of the Picture, Aberdeenshire Council‘s creative placemaking programme. Be Part of the Picture is using the culture and creativity of Aberdeenshire to build local economies and community pride. The programme is engaging with local communities and businesses to shape a refreshed identity for Aberdeenshire and build the profile of the area. Local arts agency SMART Consultants has been commissioned to set up the GLASSHOUSE art, craft and design fair. SMART Consultants specialises in providing opportunities for emerging and established artists and designers from the north-east of Scotland to showcase their work in unique ways. Food For Lyons – Italian Steak & Cheese Parcels Ingredients 6 x 1cm-thick slices beef scotch fillet or topside steak, trimmed 2 tbs finely chopped flat-leaf parsley 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 sprigs of rosemary 2 tbs finely grated parmesan cheese 2 tbs toasted pine nuts 6 slices prosciutto, halved widthways 2 tbs olive oil 1/2 cup (125ml) dry red wine 1 tin of chopped tomatoes 1/4 cup shredded basil leaves ½ cup double cream Method Using a rolling pin or something heavy and place the steaks between pieces of cling-film. Pound the steaks till they are 5mm thick. This is great fun for kids! Lightly chop the parsley, garlic, pine nuts, basil, and rosemary. Chuck it in a bowl with the parmesan cheese; season with salt and black pepper and give it a good mix up. Lay out the steak and place a slice of prosciutto on each. Divide your parsley mixture out between the steaks and spread it out on top of the prosciutto. Roll up each parcel and stick a cocktail stick through them to secure. They should look like meaty Swiss rolls. Season each with salt and black pepper. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat and cook the rolls for 4-5 minutes, turning until golden brown all over. Transfer to a plate and cover loosely with foil. Get your pan back on the heat again, put the wine in and boil it until reduced by half. Chuck in the tomatoes and simmer for 10 minutes. Pour in the double cream and the rest of the parmesan cheese. Give it a stir up. Return meat parcels and any juices to the pan. Simmer for a further five minutes. If you like it really cheesy, scatter some parmesan cheese over the dish and lightly brown it under the grill. If there is any basil left tear it over the top and serve. Excellent with pasta and everyone’s favourite….chips

Winter Dangers for Pets

Unfortunately, a lot of people are not aware that many of these products contain Ethylene Glycol, which is highly toxic to cats and dogs. It is a particular problem if it is spilt around cars on driveways as it tastes sweet and smells appetising, so will often be lapped up by pets. As little as a few drops can be fatal if ingested by a cat, and a teaspoonful could be fatal for a dog.
On behalf of the committee for the North East of Scotland Music Festival, I am pleased to inform you that the syllabus for 2014 Festival is now available! Now in its 91st year, the North East of Scotland Music Festival continues to showcase the undisputed talent of the North East with its many classes including Music, Drama and Dance! This year's Festival will take place on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th March for Scottish Country Dance and from Monday 2nd - Friday 5th June for Music, Speech and Drama classes. At this time of year, often the worst of the snow and ice is still with us and many of us will be using anti-freeze type products to keep our car windscreens clear.
Ethylene Glycol (anti-freeze) causes acute, irreversible kidney failure. Symptoms include lethargy, anorexia, vomiting and drinking more. Symptoms take 1-2 days to develop, and unfortunately by the time they are noticed it is often too late to treat them. If a pet is known to have ingested Ethylene Glycol, it can be treated if brought to the vets within the first few hours. However, even then they may still suffer severe kidney damage. Prevention is always better than treatment, so please take care not to spill anti-freeze when filling car washer bottles, or clean up spillages promptly. Grit put onto pavements in the winter time can often cause discomfort to pet dogs. The salt or grit combined with wet conditions on the pavements can irritate the sensitive skin between their toes, and can also cause softening and abrasions on their pads. If you walk your dog on pavements a lot over the winter months, it is a good idea to gently bathe and dry their feet when you get home. If signs of skin irritation persist, then see your vet. Another hazard at this time of year is ice on frozen ponds, lochs and rivers. It is best to keep your pet away from these places, to avoid the risk of them falling through the ice. However, if they do, never try to rescue them as often dogs are much more capable than humans at getting themselves out of this situation.
