Autumn is my favourite season...

Not only a fantastic summer but the enjoyment of an Indian summer too. I love the changing colours of Autumn and the bite in the air to say winter is on it’s way. Thank you to everybody who responded to the jogging group and the pilates/yoga class. The jogging group - I hope I can bring you altogether and you can maybe team up and start your own jogging group as the details I printed about JogScotland and the Cults Academy class did not happen in 2013 it was 2012! Anyway there is a nice wee crowd of you and sure you could buddy up and encourage each other. The Pilates/Yoga class we are just trying to secure a teacher to match in with hall availability and we’ll let you all know very soon. Drum Group have sent in a thank you for your patience and endurance during the recent roadwork programme plus a few updates on the development. The Community Council have been busy with their meetings and a brief summary is included again within this issue. Remember you don’t have to be on the Committee to attend the meeting, members of the public are most welcome. I would like to say thank you too. This is only issue 3 but it is the best response I’ve had from readers of any of my magazines and I’ve printed quite a few in the last eight years! There will be a last minute gift guide in the next issue so if you are a shop/work from home and have products to sell for Christmas, send in a picture, one line of what it is and how much it costs and where we can buy and we’ll include you in our guide for FREE! Kingswells Girlguiding Kingswells Girlguiding offers girls aged 5 upwards a fun filled opportunity to join one of the UK's leading women's charities. In Kingswells we have active Rainbow, Brownie, Guide & Senior Section units with over 120 members. Recently the Guides & Senior Section girls enjoyed a trip to Glasgow to the Tartan Gig to see some of their pop idols whilst the Brownies spent a morning with the park rangers at Duthie Park in order to achieve their Wildlife Explorer Badge and the Rainbows enjoyed a Mad Hatters Tea Party! In order for the girls to have such great experiences we rely solely upon volunteers, so if you would like to get involved we would love to hear from you! Autumn News ... Local Development Plan Yes, it’s that time again when Aberdeen City Council starts to form the next Local Development Plan. The Council says it does not intend to approve any more greenfield land for housing or employment in the next round because enough is provided in the current 2012 development plan. Indeed, the Scottish Government described the Council’s allocation of greenfield sites in 2012 as “generous”. Despite this, developers are bidding for 11 new sites in Kingswells as well as a few more at Countesswells and near Westhill. Rest assured, they will try hard to overturn the Council’s policy or at least try to get a foot in the door for future developments. Previous surveys have shown that the vast majority of people in Kingswells do not want to see any more developments on our local countryside. Battles over Gillahill, for example, have rumbled on for the last 20 years. The vast majority of residents do not want to see Kingswells joined up with the rest of Aberdeen as part of a huge urban sprawl.
For years, Kingswells Community Council has fought hard to control the amount of development in our area. However, we cannot fight these battles without strong support from the community. We urge you to respond to forthcoming consultations by KCC or by expressing your views directly to Aberdeen City Council.
Kingswells Bus Service A new bus service for Kingswells was introduced on Monday 15th September. If you have any comments on any of its aspect, please let us know....
If all of the new developer bids were to be approved, they would take away most of the remaining countryside around Kingswells. If even just a few of the major ones are approved they will have a huge impact on our community - including even longer traffic jams !

Residents should also be aware of the huge Newhills Expansion already approved in the 2012 development plan. This will come quite close to the Derbeth area and is likely to increase traffic on our perimeter road. There is a suggestion to run a new road between Newhills and Lang Stracht, crossing the Bucks Burn conservation area and the community forest, along the line of the popular core path walk east of Kingswells. Many residents will likely be appalled by this suggestion.

Kingswood Drive Some of the yellow lines near the chemist were installed in error and will be removed in the near future. Aberdeen City Council are to ask the developer to remove the illegal double yellow lines on both sides of the road from the chemist to the crossing.
Field at Fairley Road Good news! This soggy field is presently being drained and levelled with funds from Bellfield View developer contribution. Any further improvements for this valuable community facility are still at a conceptual stage and we will keep you informed of any update.

Village Centre The shop units and car park (Co-op etc.) are privately owned and not Aberdeen City Council’s responsibility for maintenance. We were pleased to see the broken steps were rebuilt but we continue to campaign to get some unresolved issues sorted out.... We get constant complaints about people parking their vehicles right across the access to the steps down from the car park. We have asked for the area in front of the steps, in the car park, to be painted with hatched lines. There are pot holes appearing within the car park again. Autumn is fast approaching and we would appreciate that the fallen leaves be gathered up as they can be treacherous – especially on the steps. Every year, no snow clearing goes on in the car park or the pavements and we feel this is totally unacceptable.

News from Councillor Delaney I’m typing this on what might be the last day of Summer, but you never know! It’s been great to have been able to enjoy some warmth over such a long period of time. It just lifts your spirits. Having said that, it sort of kills of any excuses for not getting the garden tidied up! Well, Kingswells Crescent has finally been resurfaced! Who would have believed it? It certainly took long enough, then we saw the Council resurface the section which was “less bad” in the first instance, but all’s well that ends well. The Prime Four roadworks are finally at an end, but of course you need to have local knowledge to use the roundabout or your destination will not be as intended! With all the right turns marked on the carriageway as being straight on, my concern is that it’s an accident waiting to happen as unfamiliar drivers realise they are going the wrong way and try to switch lanes at the last minute. The hatched area is just plain daft, preventing people from getting into the right hand lane until the last minute and causing unnecessary delays at peak times. I’ve raised these issues in the strongest of terms and appear to be making some headway. Additional road signs have been put in place and additional carriageway marking are to be done. Still no progress on the hatched area, but hopefully progress will be made. With a bit of luck all will be resolved by the time you read this, but don’t hold your breath! The new bus service seems to be a mixed blessing as it starts to settle in. The increased frequency would be welcome if the buses
were able to stick to it and the journey times are far too long. Hopefully some tweaking can be done to the timetable, something I’m going to be raising when I next meet with FirstAberdeen. The poor quality of the No 40 buses has long been a bone of contention. The good news is that they are to be refurbished internally to improve comfort and they will have on-board free wi-fi. Some of these buses are already running on the route, but unfortunately I’ve ended up travelling on the “bone shakers” every time I’ve been on the bus recently. Hopefully the refurbished fleet will be fully operational very soon! The Park & Ride site has become something of a dumping ground recently with a build up of litter in the top car park. The Council has agreed to carry out periodic clear ups and the dangerous practice of drivers entering the “buses only” section, ignoring the “no entry” signs has been reported to the Police. My surgeries are being held on the first Tuesday of each month at Kingswells Community Centre. I also hold surgeries at Sheddocksley Community Centre, Sumburgh Crescent on the last Monday of every month. Both surgeries are held at 6.30pm term time only. KINGSWELLS PRIMARY SCHOOL The pupils and staff at Kingswells School have all settled in very well after the lovely summer holiday - we were especially pleased to welcome our new Nursery and Primary 1 children. The pupils have been enjoying some exciting learning opportunities: all pupils in Primaries 2 - 6 visited Techfest to take part in interesting workshops with a Science and Technology theme; Primary 1 pupils have been learning about toys and schooling from the past with Alan Paterson, Primaries 4 - 6 had the opportunity to try out many different styles of bicycles when the Bike Roadshow came to visit with Adventure Aberdeen, and our Primary 7 pupils enjoyed 5 fantastic days of adrenalin pumping activities and team building fun at Loch Insh Watersports Centre at Kincraig. However, as we begin to approach the October break, we do so with a tinge of sadness - our Head Teacher, Mrs Jayne Glover is retiring from her post. She has worked tirelessly for Kingsells school over the last 7 years and will be greatly missed by pupils, parents and staff. We wish you well in your retirement Mrs Glover!

BucksburnAcademy news Academy Pupils Celebrate SQA Exam Success Congratulations to all the pupils of the school who received the grades they deserved over the summer. The school had a record year of S4 results, our strongest ever with many pupils in S5 and S6 gaining the grades they required to go on to university, college or apprenticeships. You may even have seen one of S6 pupils open his results envelope live on STV to find out he had passed 5 Advanced Highers, all at grade A. Well done to all our pupils and the best of luck to those that are moving on to new challenges.

Emma Gibb, S5 writes… This term five pupils from fourth, fifth, and sixth year are travelling to the Netherlands. The trip is part of the European Comenius project which has already taken the team to Norway last February and Sweden last April. The pupils will get to work with students from all over Europe while discussing alternative energies for the future. Our students will also get to visit the Anne Frank House and see the canals in Amsterdam.

Planning ahead can help your Pets cope with the firework season. For Dogs
Talk to your vet about pheromone diffusers. These disperse calming chemicals into the room and may be a good option for your dog. You could also ask your vet about using the Sounds Scary! CD therapy packs. Some dogs appreciate being able to hide when frightened, so providing a ‘doggy hideaway’. For example, this could be a wardrobe or a cupboard, packed with old duvets and blankets to make it more comfortable and to help sound-proof the area. It is important that your dog has access to its ‘doggy hideaway’ at all times, even when you’re not at home.
Each evening before the fireworks begin, move your dog to the play area and provide toys and other things that they enjoy. Make sure that there are things for you to do too so that your dog isn't left alone. Ignore the firework noises yourself. Play with a toy to see if your dog wants to join in, but don’t force them to play.
For Cats
Make sure your cat has somewhere to hide if it wants to. For example, this may be under some furniture or in a quiet corner. Don’t try and tempt your cat out as this will cause it to become more stressed.
Small Animals
If your pets live outside, partly cover cages, pens and aviaries with blankets so that one area is well sound-proofed. Make sure that your pet is still able to look out. Provide lots of extra bedding so your pet has something to burrow in.
Close any windows and black out the ‘doggy play area’ to remove any extra problems caused by flashing lights.

from PrimeFour On behalf of Drum Property Group and all its contractors working on the Prime Four site and the associated road improvement programme, sincere thanks to all the residents and road users for their patience, understanding and co-operation over the past year. The programme of works was developed following months of consultation with the local community and working closely with the Council’s roads department in a bid to minimise disruption for motorists. Drum appreciates and recognises the inconvenience and disruption the essential improvements to the local road network has caused. A project the size and significance of Prime Four inevitably requires major road improvements to be carried out to ensure efficient traffic flow in the longer term as well as safe access to the park when it becomes fully operational. The A944 east and westbound now has additional access lanes to Prime Four and the existing Kingswells roundabout has been realigned to ease future traffic flow. Drum has always been committed to enhancing access to the area, and funded the £6 million road improvement programme as part of the wider development. Drum is also contributing just over £1million to the local area Strategic Transport Fund.
Site progress Work on site continues apace and the first construction phase is coming to an end, and the occupiers will move in at the end of the year. Phase 2 construction to the North of the park has begun and is expected to be completed by summer of 2014. Due to the exceptionally dry and windy weather there have been some issues with dust from the site, in particular when the significant earth-moving programme was completed over the last few months. The contractors did dampen down the earth as much as possible, and with the wetter weather now arriving, this problem should now dissipate, but again, we apologise for any inconvenience caused.
Fourcourt
Fourcourt, Hotel and Nursery This second phase features further office buildings, and social hub of Prime Four, called the Fourcourt, which will be surrounded by services and amenities as well as the De Vere Village Urban Resort hotel and health club complex. This complex will include a gym and spa, a large swimming pool, restaurants, bars and a Starbucks. There will also be a new childcare facility called ‘Kingswellies Nursery’, and local residents can find out more at www. kingswelliesnursery.com. Kingswells residents can also register their interest in the nursery via email to info@primefour. co.uk including their name, address, telephone number and email address. Their details will be kept on record and will be collated for the nursery director, who will in turn feed out application and other relevant information as appropriate.
The Prime Four Community Trust We can now also announce plans to establish the Prime Four Community Trust. The Trust will be constituted by Foundation Scotland, and will be run by committee members recruited from the local Kingswells community. It is hoped that additional corporate funders from the tenant base at Prime Four will be recruited to the Trust in the future, to ensure long-term financial support for local community initiatives from those based at the business park. They are treated by applying the heat energy of electrolysis to them, where a tiny, pin-dot crust will form which will heal and fall away, usually within a few days, leaving no mark at all. What are they and what causes them?
These are all vascular (blood) blemishes. Red veins appear as small red lines, blood spots are round, red lumps, while spider veins have a central red spot with red lines radiating out from the centre like the legs of a spider. They can all be hereditary. Other possible causes can include capillaries weakening with ageing, intense scrubbing of the skin, sun/wind damage, pregnancy, sensitive skin/rosacea, excessive consumption of alcohol, smoking, skin injury, outdoor pursuits, and exposure to extremes in temperatures. Red veins most commonly appear on the face, often around the nose, cheeks and chin, spider naevi are commonly found in clusters on the cheeks and chest and blood spots are often found on the chest, abdomen and arms. Treatment by electrolysis instantly coagulates or mops up the trapped blood as the heat works through the vein. The vein is cauterised at both ends preventing it from re-filling, making this treatment highly successful. There will be no scar or bruising like with some treatments. Dilated capillaries treated by electrolysis do not reappear, but new ones can form. Advice is given during consultation on how to discourage further appearing. They are not dangerous, they are purely a cosmetic problem. Removing these unsightly blemishes is safe and leaves no remaining trace.

Skin tags are soft and ‘squidgy’ i.e. you can wiggle them around and they can be skin coloured or brown. Sometimes they are caused by same virus as warts. Can appear anywhere on face and body but are more commonly found in areas of friction such as the neck (from collars and jewellery), underarms, under the breasts and in the groin area. They can be hereditary, can increase with age and may also appear during pregnancy. They are removed quickly and easily by applying the heat energy to the stalk or neck of the skin tag, then dessicating the tag where it will fall off within 5days leaving a pinkish mark where the new skin forms underneath but this will fade to leave no mark at all Usually do not require further treatment.

From the subtlest of stripes to the boldest of modern floral prints, pattern offers infinite choices to suit any space. Pattern, like colour, can be a wonderful addition to a home, providing character and vitality, whether in the form of an entire, complex scheme, or simple touches such as a wallpapered wall or a set of cushions. Pattern can create a focal point: take a tatty old armchair, re-cover it in an oversized print and think of the impact, for example. Pattern can provide subtle interest through a few simple pieces featuring charming, understated designs. Or it can be the raison d’être of an entire room, a complex combination of patterned walls, rugs, fabrics and accessories. Using pattern can seem tricky, but it’s not actually as complex as it may seem. It’s best to start by working out where you stand in terms of pattern predilection. Simple, graphic motifs in muted colours or naturalistic designs in vivid shades? Large scale or small? Historical prints or modern? And would you like just a dash of pattern to enliven an otherwise plain room, or a striking combination of patterns for an all-over look? You may own the perfect inspiration already: an antique quilt, a painted vase, a print from an old book or a favourite shirt, perhaps. Look through magazines and books for further ideas, and borrow ideas from other people’s homes, or even from fashionable bars, restaurants or shops. Combining designs can be as simple as choosing a floral and a stripe in one colourway, or it may involve more time and effort spent on putting together just the right elements from a variety of sources. Wherever you find your patterned fabric, however, try to obtain large samples and, before spending a great deal of money, hang them in place to gain a really good idea of their final effect. There’s no denying that it’s easier to go down the simple route with pattern, and limit it to appearing in just one or two places. But combining a variety of patterns, though harder to get right, can be tremendously exciting and full of impact. Whatever items you’re putting together, there are some guidelines that will help make the best of them. First, when mixing pattern with pattern or, indeed, pattern with plain, a really good colour match is important. This will hang the whole effect together. Stand back and assess which colours are most visible in your patterns, then aim to combine one main colour with two or three highlights. After working out a comfortable colour balance, think about scale. In bigger rooms, you can afford to use very large-scale patterns for impact, while smaller rooms are generally better suited to medium- or smallscale patterns – unless you want to make a particular feature out of a tiny room by blasting it with a giant pattern.

Second: When combining patterns, aim to vary their scales – to avoid monotony – without going to extremes. Dramatic changes of scale tend to look strange. Don’t forget that very small patterns are only really noticeable close up; from a distance they look like a plain colour. Though sometimes this can be a disappointment, it may also be an advantage, as a tiny pattern can be used as a lovely addition to a scheme that calls for a decorative but subtle element. Third: density. Loose, open patterns give a visual ‘breather’, while intricate patterns with closely placed designs have more drama. As with scale, when using several types of pattern together, a variety of densities gives balance and interest. Fourth: design. Abstract, figurative, retro, traditional, modern – you name it, there’s something for everyone. Avoid an incongruous mix by limiting your pattern combinations to designs that originate from the same era or stylistic aesthetic. A delicate Georgian floral is unlikely to sit well next to a Seventies abstract geometric, for example, but will look great when combined with another pretty, spriggy floral of whatever origin. Remember that plains and stripes are brilliant at co-ordinating with more intricate patterns. And finally: cheat! If you love the idea of pattern but are really stuck, check out manufacturers’ wallpaper and fabric pattern books, which show you how to mix and match with ease. Keep experimenting and persevere. Success with pattern is simply a case of trial and error, putting different things together and changing them around until you’re totally happy with the results – a coherent, confident look that has great pattern panache.

Refurbishment Over the last few years we have been doing a lot of refurbishing t the centre. We got the whole centre painted and new carpets. In the October holidays we will be getting the toilets done so unfortunately there will be limited activiites on then.

Webster Park We still seem to be having problems with people breaking into the Webster Park all-weather pitch. The fence is constantly being vandalised. It is really quite sad that it was reported to us the other day that a dad and three children were caught helping the kids through the vandalised hole in the fence. It’s nice to know that’s what adults are teaching their children. Can we just reiterate that Webster PArk is leased to us from the Council and we are responsible for repairs. Kingswells continues to be targeted sporadically by opportunist thieves. Despite repeated articles in the media, homes and cars are still left insecure. Sadly, I believe Kingswells has become a target as this is common knowledge. I cannot stress enough the importance of securing your property and protecting it against theft. My team are carrying out patrols throughout the night in an attempt to deter and detect those who are targeting the area. We encourage you to report any suspicious activity at the time as this will no doubt assist us in our attempts to catch these individuals who commit theft. This interaction with members of the public is invaluable and most welcome. As the dark nights are now with us the above message is even more important.

Traditional Turkish Delight
The recipe does not use gelatine so is suitable for vegetarians. Ingredients 800g sugar 160g of icing sugar for dusting 120g cornflour for cooking 30g cornflour for dusting 1 tablespoon of lemon juice 1 tablespoon of rosewater 1 teaspoon of cream of tartar Pink or yellow food colouring You will need a sugar thermometer for this recipe along with a baking tin 20cm square. Oil the baking tin, and then line it with greaseproof paper which also needs to be oiled. Instructions Add the lemon juice and the sugar to 375ml of water and bring to the boil, stir till the mixture reaches 115 degrees c on the thermometer. Then turn off the heat.
Omer Kus, our trainee manager is Turkish and married to Tara who is Aberdonian. Omer and Tara met when Taras family were on holiday in Marmaris which is Omers home town. They have a beautiful little daughter Ayla. Omer has given us this recipe for traditional Turkish delight and although it is not currently on the menu, we hope to include it soon.
In a separate pan, add the cream of tartar and 120g of cornflour to 500ml of cold water and whisk to remove all lumps. Continue whisking as you put the pan on the heat and bring to the boil. Once the liquid becomes a runny paste, remove from the heat.
Continue adding the sugar syrup in small amounts, whisking each time. When it is all combined, bring the mixture to the boil then turn down the heat to a very gentle simmer and leave to simmer for around an hour stirring frequently. Remove what should be a deep golden colour syrup from the heat and add the rosewater and the colouring of your choice and pour into the baking tin. Cover and leave till completely cooled. Sieve the icing sugar and remaining cornflour into a large bowl and sprinkle some onto the surface of the Turkish delight before turning it out onto a chopping board. Cut the slab into squares using a sharp knife (which has been lightly oiled to prevent sticking) and then toss the squares in the mixture. You can store the Turkish delight in an airtight container for a few weeks but do not put it in the fridge as this will cause it to “sweat”.
Add a small amount of the sugar syrup to the paste and whisk till it is incorporated.

The Arlene Doug Sound is an Aberdeen based duo band which formed in 2012. The music is “party type” entertainment with songs from the 50’s right through to present time, all mixed in with Country, standards, pop etc. They also perform traditional Scottish dances like the Gay Gordons, Strip the Willow etc. Arlene only found her passion for music five years ago when she joined a local music school and has progressed to Grade 7 qualifications with the London College of Music. She has enjoyed some success in X Factor making it through to the final at the Glasgow SECC in front of the judges and an audience of 5000! Doug on the other hand has been around music “forever” (his words) playing with a variety of bands throughout the North East of Scotland, more recently with his two sons and female vocalist. Arlene is a local, living in Kingswells with her husband Rob and son Flynn and Doug and his wife Margaret live in Dyce. Since forming the Duo they have enjoyed an impressive diary of gigs. Playing at social clubs, golf clubs, private functions (birthday parties, golden weddings etc) and outdoor events like fete’s and family fun days. You might have seen them at the 50+ Festival in the Duthie Park last month! The duo also find time to voluntarily perform at nursing homes, charity events and Churches. Full4Health brings together
researchers from across Europe, with Rowett scientists taking the leading role. It is hoped that the project will further our understanding of obesity, chronic disease and under-nutrition.

This study will be looking at the impact of what we consume for breakfast has on our motivation to eat. Volunteers will consume four specially formulated breakfast drinks on four separate mornings and appetite responses to the drinks will be measured for the duration of each visit (approximately 3 and a half hours). Volunteers can select days which suit them and we ask that volunteers arrive at the Rowett anytime between 7-9.30am. Following the completion of their 4 visits, volunteers will receive detailed feedback about their body weight, body mass index, body fat, visceral (abdominal) fat - a key marker of health, waist circumference, typical feeding habits and physical activity

We are looking to enrol lean & overweight children, teenagers & adults in these age groups: · 8-10 years old · 13-17 years old · 25-45 years old · 65-75 years old The study involves 4 Breakfast Visits (3.5 hrs) at the Rowett Institute during which you will get a free breakfast and a selection of mid-morning snacks. Harnessing new insights into food, gut and brain interactions will lead to better understanding of our feelings of hunger or satiety.
