Wasn’t so hard so let’s get you kick started by attending the Christmas Fair at the Community Centre at the end of November - pop it on your calendar NOW. For the kids we’ve stepped inside the Junior Jazzercise class to see what is so good about it. Anyone for robotics then read how inventive Kingswells Primary are with their robotic design. How We Celebrated Kingswells 25th Anniversary On the 21st of June our school celebrated our 25th anniversary of having this new building which was opened in 1994.

Parents, former pupils and the wider community came to visit so that we could share photos and memories with them or show them the learning in classes. All classes had completed activities for the 25th Anniversary including creating a newspaper, researching history, drawing maps, creating Kingswells in role play, designing classrooms of the future and much more.
The dining hall was set up with pictures of past classes, videos of previous shows and trips and archive information from newspapers and old school log books. There was even a photo of the whole school in 1957 which had a total of 23 pupils from aged 5 to 14. One gentleman who visited had been at the old school at this time and could name many of his contemporaries! Many people could find either themselves, friends or relatives in the photos. The information and articles received from the P&J and the city archivist was fascinating. In 1926 the school log mentions a lecture on temperance being delivered to the senior pupils! There were School Inspection Reports from 1927 and 1930. A potted history of the school told that our current school is the fourth one to be built in Kingswells. The first school was built in 1840. By 1932 it was reported as being used as a hen house! There were details of air warnings and putting up black out coverings on the windows in 1941. We also researched some of our House names. Alexander Jaffray lived in Kingswells House. He was a very interesting man and was Lord Provost of Aberdeen in 1654. He was injured in battles and imprisoned several times. His diary and more information about his life can be found online. Dr Francis Edmonds extended Kingswells House in the mid 1800s. He was also responsible for the building of the dykes (the longest of their kind in Scotland) and Kingswells Church. It was a great event and we would like to thank everyone who came along and especially those who donated old photos, magazines and newspaper cuttings. Robots in Kingswells Primary?!
Kingswells Primary School’s Robotics Club has recently been working on new robots and strategies for their upcoming competition this year. Aberdeen Science Centre very kindly loaned us the arena and the equipment for the new game that will be in the competition. One of the club members said “This is so important to Robotics club because we can now practise which we hope will give us an advantage.” The pupils learn how to build the robot then they lead the future P7s Robotics club. It is great as we witness teamwork and respectfulness which is something we as a school strive for. The last competition, the first of its kind in Scotland, was a success for Kingswells, as we won the best design award. The design award is an award given to the team which has the best engineering notebook. Some of the children in robotics club have taken up the responsibility of filling out to show proof that they have been working the same as a true engineer would do in the real world. They are trying to be really creative

with this and are developing a website to show our progress. They identify problems and find the solution to some challenges that may get in their way while they are building and testing the robot. Our young robotic engineers are working hard and supporting each other to develop the skills real engineers need. The team are so keen and staff are impressed with the amount of extra time they give to try and improve the robot.
The pupils are doing a fantastic job but some of the tasks are really challenging. If there are any robotics experts out there who would like to support our club by sharing some tips we would be delighted to hear from them. Please get in touch with Mrs McAra or Mrs McNair.

Since the new Kingswells Community Council took over in October 2018 our KCC Facebook page has seen a massive increase in numbers. Our followers have increased from 37 when we took control to over 560 in the past 9 months. As well as residents viewing and posting on the Facebook page about what’s going on in and around Kingswells, we have a number of people promoting their businesses along with various activities and events that take place within the area. Drivers Be Aware
Could we please remind everyone that the speed limit on the C89C road that goes around Kingswells

from the Kingswells roundabout towards Newhills is now 40mph, reduced from 50mph some weeks ago. There have been a number of reported ‘tailgating’ incidents recently so perhaps not everyone is aware, however road signs are clearly visible displaying 40mph. We appreciate this road is used by many other road users many of whom are not resident to Kingswells.

Brown bin charge – clearly a contentious issue and the KCC foresee challenging times ahead for not only refuse personnel but feasibility of the whole scheme. Grass cutting – Due to the budget

constraints and machinery used by the council, the cuttings are not being picked up and are being left on the pathways and roads. KCC informed the councillors of the many complaints and comments being made by residents on this issue. Potential for accidents and safety is a major concern. Plant bulbs have been offered to the community by the council, KCC opted to take around 2000 for planting and distribution throughout the community Sonic device update from Councillor Delany – huge concerns about this issue and Police and council are in the process of ascertaining who is responsible for resolving this and if there is a breach of statutory or criminal legislation. Hatched area on main roundabout towards the A944 on approach from Hazelhead – whilst there are no plans to remove these lines they will be significantly reduced on the run up to the roundabout which should support and improve some of the traffic issues especially at peak times. We are aware there are still issues with streetlights being repaired in a timely manner. The community are to be encouraged to continue logging any lighting faults either via the council website or via phone. Although many streets now have new LED lighting which appears to be permanently on… concern has been raised to the council. Area at the shops in front of the steps needs to be more clearly marked or posts added so that no vehicles can park in this area, between the two disabled spaces. Planned Roundabout roadworks – still no update on when this is likely to happen. KCC stressed that it was important that the community were kept informed in a timely manner of any potential roadworks and that sufficient alternative routes were put Looking to advertise ? It is being well utilised by the community however there is a small chance that the Sunday service may be impacted as the funding is due for renewal by the end of Nov. “Very good of you to help,” Edna continued. “It’s always nice to get new volunteers.” “Very kind of you to donate your marrow.” Linda patted the huge vegetable. “I’m sure anyone would be delighted to win that.” “Doubtful,” Edna snorted. “I’m glad to see the back of it.” “Really?” Linda frowned. “Why’s that?”

“Make room on the table for my marrow, Linda,” Edna barked, hugging the vegetable to her chest, while pretending not to notice Linda slipping something she shouldn’t into her coat pocket. “It’s my donation to the tombola.” “Edna, what a surprise!” Linda shrilled, smoothing her clothing. “I thought you were helping to get the cream teas ready?” “All done,” said Edna, heaving the marrow onto the table, “so I thought I’d come and give you a hand.”
“Look at it.” Edna nodded warily at the marrow. “I’ve had that thing staring back at me from the vegetable plot for weeks.” “How odd. It looks as though the stripes have formed a human face on it. It’s quite sinister isn’t it?” Linda whispered. “It’s as though it’s scowling.” “Its eyes follow you everywhere,” Edna growled. “It knows all your secrets.” Edna warmed to her theme. “Last week I forgot to leave some money out for the milkman, and that marrow wouldn’t give me any peace until I put it right.” “But that’s crazy.” Linda stepped back. “How can it know?”
“I’m nearly done here too.” Linda needlessly fussed over her display.
“It just knows,” Edna shrugged, and let her words hang in the air for a moment. Finally, she added cheerfully, “Are you going to stick a raffle ticket on it?”
“We’ve got a good spread.” Edna stood back and admired Linda’s arrangement of donated tombola prizes. “Would you look at that!”
“Yes of course.” Linda jumped and battled with the tape dispenser while keeping her eye on the marrow.
“You mean the hamper?” Linda remarked casually. “A very generous donation.”
“Shall we put the tickets in the tombola barrel?” Edna said. “That’s the last job isn’t it?”
The tombola table was heaving with jars of chutneys and jams, some very nice-looking homemade cakes and some not so nice-looking homemade cakes. But it was the hamper that everyone would be want to win.
Edna watched as Linda anxiously folded the raffle tickets, a mist of sweat beading her top lip. The women worked in silence while the marrow looked on, angrily.
“Must be a few bob’s worth of stuff in there – chocolates, prosecco and some very fancy smellies,” Edna winked at Linda. “Looks like number five is the ticket everyone will be trying to get their mitts on.” “Is it?” Linda unconsciously touched her pocket. “Oh yes, of course it is.”
Edna knew it wouldn’t be long until Linda cracked. A marrow always works a charm on a guilty conscience. Even a marrow with a face drawn on with felt-tipped pen. Ticket number five would soon find its way out of Linda’s pocket and back into the tombola barrel, with no questions asked.

Is early repayment right for your mortgage? If you have money left over at the end of each month, or have received an unexpected lump sum, you may be thinking about paying off your mortgage early. You can save large amounts in interest and potentially cut your mortgage term by years but it’s not always the best option. So what factors do you need to consider before deciding whether to clear your mortgage early? Does your mortgage allow for overpayments? Not all mortgage products let you overpay and some will charge you for doing so, but many allow borrowers to overpay up to 10% of the outstanding mortgage with no penalties. If you’re not sure about the terms and conditions of your mortgage, get in touch with your lender or check the original documentation. Are you enrolled in any pension schemes? If you’re currently paying into a pension scheme it could be more beneficial in the long run to increase your contributions because of the tax relief offered by the government. If not, consider using the extra money to start saving tax-efficiently for your retirement. What are the current savings rates? Although savings rates have been extremely low in recent years, there may be a fixed rate or longer term savings account

Paying off more expensive debt such as credit card and store card balances, and unsecured loans, is always a good idea if you have residual income and should be prioritised over paying extra sums to your mortgage. Crowdfunding Campaign Launches To Save Historic Westburn House A crowdfunding campaign launched in August to save Aberdeen’s iconic Westburn House which is currently in very poor condition and requires urgent work to save it from complete ruin, and restore it back to its former glory. The Save Westburn House Action Group are a community of Members brought together by Gavin Esslemont of Etiom who recognised that the building, designed by Archibald Simpson, was being neglected and left to decay, he identified that the potential waste of such a beautiful piece of Aberdeen’s history is an opportunity to become a hub for the local community while sympathetically restoring the architecture and buildings for future generations. Following significant planning and surveying by the Action Group which is one of the largest community run projects in Scotland, the crowdfunding campaign targets £300,000 in 60 days and aligns with phase one of the project to “Arrest the Decay”. The funding will be used for works to see the conservation and vital refurbishment of the external envelope of the building with both internal and external repairs. Further investment from other funds for the second phase of restoration of the building have been agreed for work to “Restore and Renovate”. The end result of the project will see Westburn House transform into a heritage and education centre and hub for community facilities, activities and events; with restaurant, meeting and exhibition space, a wedding venue

The official project launch fundraising event on 26th September in the RGU Sir Ian Wood Building will include an exhibition, keynote speakers, schools involvement, community opinions and the unveiling of the grand master plan. News from Councillor Delaney... As we look back on the summer we can’t hide from the soap opera formerly known as Brexit. Regardless of your political beliefs or indeed which way you voted in the EU Referendum, the constitutional implications of what was happening in Westminster cannot be ignored by anyone. In my view what has become apparent is the need to have a written constitution like most modern democracies. That would ensure that boundaries were clearly set out and were not subject to interpretation as is currently the case. We insist that charities and voluntary organisations need to have a constitution in order to receive public funding, so why not for our democratic institutions? Looking much closer to home, I mentioned planned works to enlarge the Kingswells roundabout last time. Dates were unclear but there was a possibility of these works starting late Summer on into the Autumn. I now have confirmation that this will not happen until Spring or Summer 2020 at the earliest. Also tied in with these works will be the reduction in length of the hatched area on the A944 as you approach Kingswells. This just seems to artificially create tailbacks at peak times. These works are now to be carried out at the same time as the roundabout works. The

intention is to reduce the hatched area to half its current length, though final decisions may depend upon design of the new roundabout and predicted traffic flows. Concerns have been raised regarding the operation of the Kingswells South Junction on the AWPR following a number of accidents. Transport Scotland has acknowledged some time ago that an “engineering solution” is required but they have yet to specify what they are proposing or indeed the timescale for such works. Concerns regarding visibility at the Dykeside Roundabout are also being looked into. One of the biggest issues has been grass cutting in council maintained areas with much fewer cuts being done than in previous years. A number of residents raised concerns relating to the mess left behind, grass getting dragged into people’s homes and the slip hazard it creates. Also concerns about ticks infecting dogs and difficulties cleaning up dog mess in overgrown areas. This has all come about as a result of grass cutting taking a huge hit in the council’s budget. My greatest fear is what will be hit next? Street lighting faults are a concern with the darker nights starting to creep in. Faults are taking longer than the stipulated 7 days to resolve, with some running into weeks. Matters

However, that doesn’t help us in the short term, so please report faults to the council through their website or by phone. If they are not progressed after a couple of weeks, let me know so I can chase things up. Also on lighting, these new LED bulbs give out a bright white light which improves immediate visibility, but I have had a number of queries relating to the overall coverage (or span) of each lighting column resulting in some dark spots between columns which had not previously existed. This is of particular concern from a safety perspective. I have asked for this to be looked into at specific locations but, unless lighting levels fail to meet minimum statutory requirements I’m afraid this genuine concern is likely to remain unresolved. On a different note, a number of dropped kerbs are to be installed to assist people with wheelchairs and walking aids to get around Kingswells. These will help to improve access at Kingswells Shopping Centre, Kingswells Church, the Four Mile House and the poorly installed drop kerb at the pedestrian crossing on Kingswood Drive near Broaddykes Drive is to be repaired. I appreciate more needs to be done to make the whole village accessible to people with disabilities but, with tight budgets and competing priorities I’m delighted to see this going forward. But underneath all the glitter, colourful dance numbers, popular songs, rhyming couplets, contemporary references and yells of “Behind you!” a puzzled visitor to our shores might just recognise some familiar fairy stories and folktales. So how did it all start? Like most traditions, pantomime has grown from customs and practices that have been transformed over time by changing tastes and fashions.

ave you booked your tickets for the pantomime yet? Christmas may seem a long way off, but such is the popularity of panto, the best seats could have already disappeared in a puff of fairy dust. Pantomime is a British tradition that’s guaranteed to mystify anyone who is unfamiliar with our culture. The name itself creates confusion: when US-based Baywatch actor Pamela Anderson received her first offer to appear in pantomime in Liverpool in 2010,
There’s nothing like a Dame One of pantomime’s best-loved characters is the ‘Dame’. Nearly always played by a man, the Dame is generally portrayed as a vain, foolish woman, determined to get a husband at any price. But, with the possible exception of the villainous Ugly Sisters in Cinderella, the Dame never fails to gain the audience’s affection. It seems that we Brits simply love the idea of a man acting out a female role. Maybe that’s because the practice of men appearing as women on stage is deeply embedded in British culture. Until the law was changed in the early 1660s, it was illegal for women to act in theatres, so audiences were used to seeing men performing in female attire. When boys with unbroken voices, wearing costume and make-up, played roles such as ‘Juliet’ in Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’, it was probably quite hard to spot the difference between a male and female actor, but when a grown man took on a role such as Juliet’s gossipy nurse, the audience would have been conscious of the gender reversal, and would have no doubt enjoyed its comic potential. Cross-dressing was clearly quite acceptable to sophisticated city audiences three or four centuries ago, but it’s intriguing to discover that at that time communities in isolated rural
Happily Ever After The first rule of panto is that the two young lovers must be happily married when the final curtain falls: Cinders must get her Prince, Jack must rescue Jill from the giant and Aladdin must pair up with his Princess. The idea of putting two lovers at the heart of the plot comes from Commedia dell’arte, a broad type of comic performance popular in Italy between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, which is said to be the forerunner of our traditional pantomime. Commedia dell’arte was based on ‘stock’ characters, and plots generally featured a pair of lovers, a mischievous servant, a clown or pierrot character and a money-grabbing old man. The rich older man could be the father of one of the female lovers, or a suitor hoping to marry a young woman (who was, of course, in love with a handsome younger man). While our young lovers of today have changed little from the Commedia dell’arte, some of the other characters have been reworked to fit different panto plots. The clown is still
with us in the shape of daft but lovable Simple Simon or Wishee Washee, while Cinderella’s footman Buttons is a pale reflection of the Commedia’s high-spirited servants. Finally, the stock character of the old man appears variously as the foolish Baron Hardup (Cinderella), the villainous Fleshcreep (Jack and the Beanstalk) and the powerhungry Abanazar (Aladdin). Harlequinade to pantomime In the seventeenth century British theatre borrowed some of Commedia’s characters to create an early type of pantomime known as a ‘Harlequinade’ (named after the clown character, Arlecchino). But pantomime as we know it today was created when audiences began to demand more and more spectacle. Canny theatre producers decided to discard the less popular parts of the Harlequinade but keep the transformation scene, where Harlequin waved his magic baton (nowadays a fairy wand) to reveal fairytale characters and scenes dramatically changing before the audience’s eyes. By the Victorian era the Harlequinade had become the two-act pantomime we would recognise today. The Victorians were also first to use celebrities to draw the crowds. In the 1870s producers began to feature music hall stars as leading names, but these days a typical
pantomime cast list could include soap stars, Hollywood legends and even recruits from reality TV shows. So pantomime goes on, changing year on year to suit current tastes, but in many respects remaining true to its earliest origins. It’s the one theatre entertainment that can successfully play to an audience aged between two and ninety-two, but will it continue to do so for centuries to come? Oh, yes it will!
