Volunteer Friendly Award Presentation The Befriending Service of the Living Well Project received their Volunteer Friendly Award from the Lord Provost of Aberdeen. The Volunteer Friendly Award is a quality standard designed by Volunteer Centre Dundee to recognise groups who are great at involving volunteers. As a result of the commitment of the Living Well Project Befriending Service to supporting, training and assisting their volunteers, they have achieved, and exceeded, the standards required by the award. The Living Well Project charity was established
in 2010, with the aim of supporting isolated and vulnerable people in the communities of the NE of Aberdeen. The project relies on various sources of funding, including, Cliff House Care, the Edwards Trust, Go For It Fund, the Robertson Trust and Aberdeen City Council. A note from Sue ... Here I am back again and I’m still waiting for the glorious summer! The few days we have enjoyed were lovely though! How frustrating is it at the moment getting around Aberdeen, with all the road closures but you just have to stay calm and drive carefully. The by-pass on the other hand is fairly coming on and it is going to be quite an impressive road when it’s finished. It will be nice to see all the sections linking up! School will just be back as this hit’s the streets - mother’s will be breathing a sigh of relief and enjoying the peace and quiet that prevails during the school term. There are a lot of new advertisers in this issue of the magazine and I hope you will find their services useful, as well as our regular supporters - thank you all very much. Certainly no magazine without the advertisers. At the moment I am gathering boxes together as I have an impending house move. It’s been a few years since my last one but this time I’m getting ruthless! Well - I’m trying to get ruthless. Why do some people find it really hard to part with “things”? I’m a paper collector! Bits of paper, receipts, air tickets - why do I keep them - I do not know - but my recycling bin is enjoying eating them all up at the moment. When down sizing you find you have a lot of stuff that you no longer need so I phoned the British Heart Foundation and booked a pick up of furniture. So looking forward to later in the month when some of my “stuff” will maybe find a new home and the charity will gain some valuable funds. I’m about to head off on another short break to Blackpool! Dancing I hasten to add - World Championships no less. Strictly has nothing to fear though. Anyway, enough about me - go grab that cuppa and enjoy the magazine.

Aberdeen City Health & Social Care Partnership bringing NHS and Aberdeen City Council services together to benefit local communities is now in operation. The new Partnership will deliver adult primary health care and adult social care to the people of Aberdeen, with a total annual revenue budget of some £250million. The organisation will be jointly responsible for people’s health and care needs and for ensuring folk receive co-ordinated services which are as seamless as possible. ACHSCP will oversee the formation of integrated, multi-skilled teams – comprising, for example, GPs, community nurses, social workers, voluntary sector colleagues and mental health nurses – who will work to support patients in the community and avoid unnecessary admissions to hospital. The Partnership is overseen by an Integration Joint Board (IJB), made up of representatives from the local authority and the NHS, along with voluntary sector, carer, patient and service-user representatives. The integration of health and social care is designed to bring about improvements in the way services are provided for people by making sure health and social care is tailored to people’s individual needs. The ACHSCP and the IJB will ensure people get the care and support they need in the right place, at the right time, in the right setting.
Services for people can be improved by working as joint health and social care teams, in close co-operation with the voluntary and private sectors, and with a single budget. The Partnership starts from the principle of person-centred care, with an emphasis on prevention and anticipation. That means finding ways for people in need of care to create partnerships around themselves in the four localities we are establishing in Aberdeen – North, South, West and Central. Our population is changing and so we need to change the relationship we have with people, by supporting more self-care and self-management and more joinedup and seamless care for those we work with. Integration of health and care is an opportunity for us to reshape our services and make them agile enough to work well for the people of Aberdeen in the decades ahead. CHOCOLATE MOUSSE BROWNIES Take the classic rich and squidgy chocolate brownie recipe a step further with a creamy milk chocolate mousse topping for the ultimate chocolate lover’s dessert! Makes 12 Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes plus cooling and chilling BROWNIE BASE 150g dark chocolate, broken into pieces 225g unsalted butter, diced 350g light muscovado sugar 4 medium eggs, beaten 1 tsp vanilla extract 225g plain flour MOUSSE TOPPING 100g milk chocolate, broken into pieces 100ml double cream 1 large egg, separated Fresh raspberries, chocolate drops and mint sprigs, to decorate
pan of simmering water and leave until melted. Remove from the heat and stir until smooth. Leave to cool for 10 minutes, then whisk in the sugar, eggs and vanilla extract. 3 Sift over the flour and fold into the chocolate mixture with a metal spoon. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and level the surface. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until just firm to the touch - it should still be a little squidgy in the centre. Leave to cool completely in the tin. 4 To make the mousse topping, melt the milk chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Remove from the heat, cool for 5 minutes then stir in the cream until smooth. Cool for a further 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, then beat in the egg yolk. 5 Whisk the egg white in a clean grease-free bowl until holding stiff peaks, then gently fold into the chocolate mixture. Spread the mousse in an even layer over the top of the cold brownie and chill in the fridge for 3-4 hours (or overnight) until set. Remove from the tin and cut into 12 squares. Serve topped with fresh raspberries, chocolate drops and mint sprigs. Tip : Add a few drops of mint extract to the chocolate mousse mixture for an after dinner mint flavour.

Latest News Football Stadium
Until we hear more detail, KCC is remaining neutral about the stadium. As always, our aim is to try to get the best outcomes we can for people in Kingswells. In June, members of the public attended KCC’s monthly meeting. They included two groups representing the “No to Kingsford Stadium” action group as well as some residents who live off the Brodiach Road near to the stadium site. Unfortunately, there was little to discuss as the proposals were still at a very early stage and our local city councillors were unable to express a view due to regulations. In July, members of the Community Council met again with Westhill & Elrick Community Council and with key representatives of Aberdeen Football Club (AFC) to discuss the emerging plans and forthcoming public consultation. AFC submitted a Proposal of Application Notice to Aberdeen City Council on 28th June. This is the first stage of the formal planning process and will enable a full planning application to be submitted after 20th September 2016. AFC have assured us that their planning will take into consideration views expressed by the public. NOW IS THE PUBLIC’S BEST CHANCE TO INFLUENCE THINGS.

Prime Four Expansion
We are waiting for the Scottish Government’s decision on Drum Group’s proposals for a major expansion onto green belt land west of their current site. KCC has submitted comments, including real concerns, about Drum Group’s outline plans for developing the site as set out in their Framework Document. Drum Group has recently submitted a Proposal of Application Notice for a major development alongside the A944 which includes the area presently occupied by the Five Mile Garage and Ardene House (vet hospital). The proposal is for a mixed-use commercial development including retail, food and drink, and other ancillary uses such as offices and/or hot food takeaway. KCC will be watching developments closely as there would be further major implications for traffic on the A944. There will be a public consultation about these latest proposals in due course.
Wellside Circle
Residents in this area will know that an application has been submitted to build two semi-detached homes on an area of green space at the south end of Wellside Circle. KCC has objected to the application on the grounds of loss of amenity for the community. Road Closures
Weekend closures of the C89c to Newhills between 8 pm and 6 am should be finished by the time you read this. The C128c from Kingswells Roundabout to Blacktop Road will be closed from 8 August to 11 December (except to residents). A longer route will be needed to access Cults/ Bieldside during this 4-month period. KCC has complained about this major inconvenience for drivers, but to no avail.
Park-and-Ride
The alterations to the park-and-ride are nearly completed. They will enable X17 buses to access the site via the main access route into Prime Four off the A944. This should benefit those travelling by bus. However, KCC is concerned that some of the advice it gave to Aberdeen City Council about making the site secure has been rejected. There have been problems in recent years with travellers occupying areas of the park-and-ride and then having to be evicted. Next KCC Meeting Our next meeting will be held in Adventure Aberdeen on Fairley Road at 7 pm on 8 August. (Please note the earlier start). As always, members of the public are very welcome to attend.

One of the greatest pleasures of reading occurs when fiction resonates with our reality. How useful, then, to find a novel that is not only set in Aberdeenshire, but which reflects the lives of many people who live and work in North East Scotland. However, there are limits - none of us would wish to endure the sort of haunting drama this particular character encountered. A romp through this gripping thriller gives the mundane an enticing appeal. VALENTINA by S.E. Lynes, is a psychological thriller which moves with such pace it is wise for any reader to put aside some time as this is a proper page-turner. A Glaswegian journalist, Shona McGilvery, moves to the North East of Scotland with her partner Mickey and their baby, Isla. They find a perfect cottage by a wood in the countryside and set up home, the promise of an idyllic, almost fairytale life ahead of them.
However, as Mikey works offshore, Shona must adapt to life with her other half out of reach on a rig somewhere in the North Sea for weeks at a time. Somewhat surprised to find herself in this position, she forces herself to make the best of it, although the deep, dark wood that surrounds the cottage doesn’t ease her frame of mind. A creeping sense of loneliness threatens not only her happiness but her sanity, until one day she meets Valentina. Also a mum of a young baby, the charismatic and enchanting Valentina becomes Shona’s new best friend with alarming speed - there are too many similarities for them not to hang out together. However, it doesn’t take long for Shona to realise it’s not the wood that should have been setting off alarm bells it’s her new friend. An insightful illustration of how loneliness can push us into making rash, ill-considered decisions, this book is packed with neat observation. Vibrant characters, sassy dialogue, lively descriptions abound, and with intriguing plot twists driving the action, this relatively familiar domestic set-up turns into a psychological nightmare. News from Councillor Delaney... In my last column I dared to mention the predicted three month heatwave. Well, nice summer sun, followed by torrential rain and thunderstorms seems to be the order of the day as I write this. Actually it’s a bit like British politics at the moment, everything’s all over the place and just as you think things are settling down again, you get another thunderclap, followed by the uncertainty of some more heavy rain, but lets not go there! Returning to more important matters, I was delighted to attend Kingswells School’s Danceathon, held in memory of Sandra MacPherson, who sadly passed away in March. The whole school was singing and dancing along to Sandra’s favourite music, full of joy and happiness as Sandra herself always was. The event was well attended by parents and grandparents with money raised being split between CLAN and a permanent memorial to Sandra. The afternoon was a credit to both staff and pupils. Aberdeen Football Club are to commence a 12 week period of public consultation on their plans for a stadium at West Kingsford from 25th July. A number of constituents have contacted

me recently to express their views. Whatever your view, it is appropriate to make it known as part of the consultation process. You will the have a further opportunity to do so during the planning process itself. Please note that councillors are not permitted to express a view on planning matters prior to their determination by the Council. Moving on, I recently met with representatives from Stewart Milne Group to express concerns raised by residents regarding road closures related to the Countesswells development. The works within Kingswells will take place from the Kingswells roundabout along the C89C into Kingswood Drive just north of Fairley Road. It has been confirmed that most of these works will occur on the verges in order to avoid road closures. However, there may be the need to close one lane for safety reasons at times and this will require a one way system to be put in place. The only road closure will be at Fairley Road’s junction with Kingswood Drive to get services across the junction, but this will be done at a weekend. The intention is to avoid lane closures on the A944 if at all possible, by tunnelling
under either the road itself or the roundabout. However, the closure of the Kingswells to Cults road is going to be prolonged. It will be done as a rolling programme of closures of 250m sections of roadway at any one time, running for several months. Access will be maintained to residents at all times, but it will not be possible to use the road as a through route during this time. However, there is some good news! Once on site, these services will be sufficient to feed the whole development of around 3,00 homes, so no digging up of roads or further road closures are envisaged following the completion of this programme of works At the meeting I reiterated my previous request that extended hours working not be undertaken in proximity to built up areas in Kingswells and this was once again confirmed. I also asked that everything possible be done to minimise the timeframe for these works. It was agreed that it served everyone’s best interest to get these works completed as quickly as possible. I enquired about the possibility of services being taken through the site rather than going under the Kingswells to Cults road to

minimise disruption and the length of time the road needs to be closed. Some of the land which would have to be crossed is not currently in the ownership of Stewart Milne Group and utility companies pretty much determine the most appropriate route for services, so there appeared to be no practical way around this. Timescales are reliant on the completion of the works currently being undertaken on the east to west link along Countesswells Road. They are also indicative and always subject to slippage, but I have asked to be kept

Aberdeen pub to host football event with Scottish sports personality A north-east pub is getting set to serve up a charity sporting lunch with former football legends. McGinty’s Meal An’ Ale (McGinty’s), which is located at the top of Union Street, is welcoming ex-Motherwell football player, John Gahagan and ex-Aberdeen football legend, Neale Cooper for an afternoon of football entertainment. John, who played for Motherwell for over 11 years before qualifying as a SFA football development officer, has become one of the best sports speakers on the circuit receiving various awards over the years. Neale, one of the Dons young guns played in the Gothenburg side under Alex Ferguson and made 220 appearances for the club before making the move to England and into management in his later career.
The event, which will be hosted by Ian Thain, takes place on Friday 9th September and will also include a two-course meal and a question & answer session with Neale Cooper. The lunch will also raise money for ARCHWAY, an Aberdeen-based charity supporting children and adults with learning disabilities. Beer of the Month It would be unthinkable not to raise a glass of an American beer let’s start with an oddity from San Francisco. Anchor Steam, a 4.8% amber beer, has been brewed on and off at various locations in San Francisco since 1871, when it was first produced by a German-born bar-owner named Gottlieb Brekle. Clearly – and like literally hundreds of migrant German brewers in the American Midwest – Brekle intended to brew something like the lagers of his homeland, but without the right ingredients or any means of refrigeration. He ended up using lager yeast but ale malts, the floweriest local hops available, and instead of a properly chilled fermenter a big shallow open affair up on the brewery roof. Well, mongrels make the cutest pups and Anchor Steam, although definitely a hybrid, isn’t half bad. The nose is malty and grassy and a bit spirity, too; the mouth feel is creamy and viscous, with an earthy flavour underlying a sharp aggressive citrus tang. The finish is bitter, dry, and for an American beer, very long. So: not a bit like Bud. Our second beer couldn’t be more English. Thwaites’s Wainwright Golden Ale was first brewed as a seasonal special for summer 2007 and commemorated the famous fellwalker and author Alfred Wainwright who, like Thwaites itself, was a native of Blackburn in Lancashire. It was such a success, and with good reason, that the brewery kept it on as a regular. It’s been brewed by Banks’s in Wolverhampton since Thwaites decided to scale back its brewing operations a couple of years ago, but it’s none the worse for that. A quaffable 4.1% alcohol, it’s a very pale lemon yellow, with a soft nose of lemon jelly and hints of apple overlying a biscuit malt base. The palate is much sharper and hoppier but also has more depth; the finish returns to a rich but dry maltiness. By Ted Bruning

KINGSWELLS PARISH CHURCH In the last Newsletter we congratulated our Minister, Alisa Macdonald and her husband Neal on the birth of their second son Finley and it was a matter of great celebration that on Sunday 10 July Findley was baptised. This was not only a great occasion for family and friends but for our whole congregation. The Sacrament of Baptism is an occasion of joy, thanksgiving, commitment and love. We pray that Finley may experience fullness of life in all that he does and tries to do. On Saturday 13 July we held our afternoon Victoria Tea – a splendid event in which we relived times past, with waiters in black attire and white aprons, bone china, cake stands, superb tea and coffee, scones, pancakes and everything else that was delicious! Not least we enjoyed the company, the chat and the sharing of friendship. Thank you to the team of ladies (only some in the photo) that made all of this possible and we raised £325 for Church funds. We welcomed the Rev Dr Norman Mciver as our Locum Minister who joined us on 01 August. Living Generously Personal relationships lie at the heart of our being. We flourish and find happiness in being with others; in loving, in caring and responding to the love of others. Living in community with others is often where the richness of life is found in what we are open to share with others and because status, power or authority does not define our relationships. In these terms our community is important to all of us. It has been said that life lived generously is life lived freely. In being generous with possessions, love, freedom, and thanksgiving then we live more freely: we are less tied

to the earth and less bound by the ‘things’ we have. Part of the problem is that what we own can begin to own us. Experience suggests that it’s far better to be rich in friendship than rich in money, and true friendship comes from generosity of spirit. Living generously towards others and less selfishly for self is what Christianity is about. In these times of national and global turmoil in which hate, anger and violence have so recently been in evidence it is worth considering that fostering good relationships among people of different race, nationality, sexual orientation and perceived status is crucial to the well being of community, nations and the world. Governments whom we elect can set the context but the rest is up to us, the people who day by day live and work with one another. Mother Teresa once said, ‘I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the water to make many ripples’. So cast your stone and make the world a better place. Return of the Skylarks It was fitting that on the centenary of the Battle of the Somme skylarks returned to sing above the fields at Gillahill. You may have heard them when wandering along the path to Dobbies. It is very poignant that skylarks were also singing above the trenches in Flanders when whistles blew and men were ordered to go “over the top”, many never to return.
Hot Weather Dangers With the few spells of nice (ish) weather that we are treated to over a typical Scottish summer, it is understandable that dog owners are keen to take their canine companions out as much as possible. However, there are several things to remember to ensure that your dog is kept safe and healthy in warmer weather. Dogs mainly lose heat by panting. For this to be effective, their surrounding environment must be relatively cool. For this reason, they should never be left alone in a car during hot weather, as they find it impossible to cool down. Even with windows left open, cars quickly overheat, and even if you have left your car in the shade, this can quickly change over time. Gillahill for a number of years due to the intensive nature of the farming. This year, several fields were left unsown with crops, creating the kind of environment the birds like for nesting. It would be nice to think that in future years some marginal land could be left uncultivated to keep the skylarks singing. (Tom Straiton)
Avoid letting your dog do vigorous exercise during the hottest part of the day (approx. 11am – 3pm). Some excitable dogs are not good at regulating their own exercise, and then struggle to cool down by panting. Exercise in hot weather should also be avoided in dogs with very shortened noses, such as pugs and pekinese breeds, as these type of dogs find it harder to cool down due to their shortened airways. Thick coated breeds should also do minimal exercise during hot weather. If you are concerned that your dog is showing signs of distress during hot weather, such as panting excessively, collapsing or being unable to settle, then move him to a shaded area right away. Make sure he has plenty of fresh water to drink. Kingswells Health Walks Why not come and join us? Kingswells Health Walks are short, gentle walks of between one to three miles. They start every Thursday morning at 10.30 from the Community Centre and return after about an hour with the option of a stop for coffee and a chat. The walks are led by local trained volunteers, are safe, accessible, sociable, and are free. We go out every week, whatever the weather, except when extreme conditions make it unsafe. Anyone can come along, young or old, male or female, newcomers or visitors, and new faces are very welcome. You don’t need any special equipment, just sensible, comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for the weather. It is an opportunity to make new friends and explore parts of Kingswells and its surroundings that you may not know. We are lucky to live in such an attractive area with a variety of pleasant walks. Walking has many health benefits. Your muscles will waste away if you don’t use them! You are never too old to start. Regular gentle excercise like walking can lower the risk of heart disease, stroke, some cancers, help control diabetes and manage your weight. Walking helps older folk protect their joints, stay independent and reduce the risk
of falls. It also improves your mood, alleviates loneliness and depression and helps you to feel a part of your community. If you have been inactive for some time, don’t worry; you can start slowly and build up gently. As you get fitter you will be able to go a little further and faster. Some folk may already be reasonably fit and active and will want a longer, brisker walk. If we have 2 leaders, then the faster group may go on ahead or take a different route, but there will always be a leader who is prepared to take beginners and slower walkers, or those with sore joints or other problems, who need to go at a gentle pace. Health walks occur all over Scotland and are supported by Paths For All, and Sport Aberdeen and are approved by the NHS. There are groups in several areas of Aberdeen. Our Kingswells Group has been going for over 2 years and we now have four trained leaders and a group of 6-12 regular walkers. So please do come and join us and give it a try.
