Benefit of plant-based food in our diet Alternative protein long-term study The partial replacement of traditional sources of protein (meat/processed meat) with plant protein could represent a healthy, sustainable way of eating. Our study will evaluate the nutritional and health benefits after eating buckwheat, broad bean, hemp and green pea, by replacing part of the meat from your habitual diet over a 12-week period. A huge thank you to our delivery team ...
End of second year of publications... Can you believe that this is the end of our second year. What a journey. When I first came to do the magazines I thought I’d never get the hang of the road layouts! Then finding places to park to do my deliveries. Advertisers and articles they have all come very easily - thank you. The very reliable delivery team who have ventured out every other month despite the weather to make sure you all get your copy in good time - you are all brilliant. To say thank you to the delivery team we had a get-to-gether in the Fourth Room Lounge last month, unfortunately not everybody managed but we had a nice number there to enjoy the buffet and a drink. We all huddled round the fire until we could take the heat no more! A very pleasant evening and I hope you all recognise each other now when you are going about the village. There will be a major change with Issue 13 - being the size of the publication - it is shrinking to A5 size. I think this will be more manageable from a delivery point of view and more compact for you to read. Same quality just smaller packaging.

Tree cutting
Many of the landscaped areas in Kingswells are maintained by Aberdeen City Council. Any pruning or removal of trees
One of the attractive features of Kingswells is its setting in rolling, wooded countryside. From the 1980s, tree cover was increased around the village through the landscaping provided by various developers. Today, these trees improve the local environment for everyone. They make Kingswells look more attractive, shelter homes from the wind, and reduce air pollution and traffic noise. Some trees and wooded areas in Kingswells are legally protected by Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs). This means there are penalties for pruning or felling trees without approval from Aberdeen City Council. Homeowners should be aware of any restrictions through the deeds for their property. Due to budgetary constraints, the Council is focusing its work on trees that are dangerous or diseased. A homeowner may be able to pay the Council to do pruning work on TPO trees provided that the Council considers the work to be justifiable.

SensationALL Singers is an inclusive choir which our charity SensationALL is starting up on Wednesday 25th March at the Old School in Westhill from 6.30 -7.30pm,and every Wednesday thereafter. In order to run this choir effectively we urgently need at least 10 volunteers to help support young people with multiple support needs, to help set up or tidy the rooms afterwards, provide refreshments and in supervising any youngsters who may need to access a 'quiet room' during this time. There are other upcoming SensationALL fundraising events such as "Cocktails in Teapots" on Saturday 13th June, Fundraising Race Night on Saturday 29th August that will require the help of 10-15 volunteers. We also plan to run play-schemes for youngsters with multiple support needs during Easter and summer holiday periods that also requires daytime voluntary support. growing in these areas can only be done by the Council. In a few cases, the Council may remove trees or branches which are clearly dangerous. However, the shading of a new patio or conservatory will not normally qualify as a good reason for cutting or removing trees in these areas. This approach seems reasonable because trees maintained by the Council belong to the whole community. In areas maintained by residents’ associations or developers, non-Council contractors may be employed to do pruning work. In such cases, we would urge residents to ensure that only competent and professional contractors do the work. In some parts of Kingswells it is clear that pruning work has been carried out by people who know very little about trees or the way they grow. The work may be done cheaply but end up spoiling the appearance of your property. Some trees have been so badly damaged that they will be permanently deformed.

Speed limit on the A944 Some people are unhappy that the speed limit on the road to Westhill has been reduced from 50 mph to 40 mph and have set up a petition on www.Change.org to petition Aberdeen City Council to restore it to 50 mph or 60 mph. Speed limits on roads around Kingswells do now appear inconsistent. The Council has reduced speed limits to take account of new developments, including the junction with the AWPR just west of the Five Mile. Over the years, the A944 has been the scene of various accidents, sadly some fatal. KCC will continue to ask the police to enforce speed limits on the A944 as too many drivers routinely ignore them.
Litter-pick Our thanks go to Claire Burt for working with Aberdeen City Council to organise a community clean-up of the area around the village on Saturday, 18 April. There is certainly a lot to be done. Many of our ‘green’ areas are looking really messy. Some locations are infested with litter that has been there for years. At the time of writing, arrangements for volunteers to meet up have yet to be finalised. All necessary equipment will be provided. We would encourage everyone in Kingswells to take a pride in where they live and try to keep their local ‘patch’ litter-free.

News from Councillor Delaney

he change of the clocks signals better things to come, or at least it lifts the spirits and gets us all enthused again, knowing the short days are now behind us and summer is on its way, so lets start this month on a happy note!
Rather than make this column a big long moan, I’m now going to welcome the introduction of the new hydrogen buses on the X40 route. Fair enough they have had a bit of a dodgy start requiring more than their fare share of tow trucks, but we need to put this in context! Hopefully this is just down to teething problems, as they are an initiative we really should be welcoming with open arms. They run on compressed hydrogen, producing no harmful omissions into the atmosphere. These vehicles are in widespread use overseas but only stating to catch on in the UK. Aberdeen is leading Scotland in pioneering the adoption of this clean green technology and in developing the infrastructure to support it.

I’m delighted to welcome Mrs Moira McIver’s appointment as Head Teacher at Kingswells Primary School. I’ve known Moira for the past three years and been impressed at how well she has led the school following Jayne Glover’s retirement in October 2013. Having a happy, well managed school where children are encouraged to excel has always been the hallmark of Kingswells School. Nothing is more important to us as parents and grandparents than the quality of our children’s education and I take much comfort knowing Moira will be leading this. On a different subject, we were lucky in having a fairly mild winter as far as severity goes, but it was pretty icy under foot and treacherous to walk on at times. I mentioned this in my last column, but it’s far from being a closed subject in my mind. Numerous people, myself included, fell on the ice and others, who were less fortunate, sustained broken bones and other injuries. I remain to be convinced that resources were being targeted appropriately and will be discussing this further with the Director. Another bone of contention remains Broaddykes Drive which is undoubtedly the worst road in Kingswells, yet it has once again failed to make it onto this year’s carriageway resurfacing programme, despite my requests to have it assessed for inclusion in the programme. In fact, for the second year in a row, not one road in Kingswells has been included in the programme. Once again I will be pursuing answers as to why Broaddykes Drive was not even considered for inclusion on the reserve list. Needless to say, I will continue to make representations for inclusion in the 2016/17 programme as the condition of the road continues to decline. The new Dandara development at Huxterstone continues to cause concern for residents living in that area. I have made a number of representations to the Council about indiscriminate parking which is either obstructing or blocking people’s line of sight. Also with reference to noisy work on Sundays and other works happening outwith the specified working hours. As a

These buses make a really pleasant change from our usual rickety bone shakers which serve Kingswells and I would encourage residents to make use of them. Unfortunately only four buses have been assigned to the X40 route, not enough to cover all journeys, so it’s pretty much pot luck as to whether or not you get a comfortable journey or more of the shake, rattle and roll! Talking of the X40 I’ve had a fair number of representations about the poor timekeeping of the buses, not to mention the journey times. These are issues I’ll certainly be exploring further when I next meet with First. There are far too many pinch points in the current route, which merely add to the length of the journey for no good reason. Looking now at the proposals for the X17 to provide a frequent service from the Park & Ride, I’m afraid the completion date, originally set for February 2015, then May, has now slipped to August/September. P7 Transition Day
Bucksburn Academy Careers Fair On the 26th February the school was packed out for our 2015 Careers Fair. This is organised each year by the school’s Parent Council and this year saw over 40 employers, training providers, Further and Higher Education organisations come together to offer advice, inspiration and information to our pupils and parents. This is an important event that helps our pupils plan for choices and their own learning journey through and beyond school. We are very grateful to all of our partners to providing such positive support in this way.
Bucksburn Academy Drama Oscar Night A number of pupils recently showcased the work they have been doing in drama to a full house of parents and staff. Pupils studying drama demonstrated the skills they have been developing such as mime and stage fighting. The evening finished with a fantastic performance put on by the Drama Club of Pirates of the Curry Bean which brought together some great acting, comedy, costume and set.
All of our P7 pupils who will be starting at the school next session took part in a transition day in February. They took part in a number of activities designed to introduce them to the learning skills they will be developing when they start at the school. These activities were run by senior pupils. Later that evening it was the parent’s turn who were welcomed to the school and taken on tours of the school led by junior and senior pupils

Bunnies Traditionally, rabbits have always been thought of as good first pets for children. However, they have many complex requirements and are often difficult to handle, so it is best to research them thoroughly before considering getting one as a pet. Rabbits are herbivores and have teeth that grow continuously. Because of this, their teeth need to be constantly worn down, and they are designed to chew on grass for most of the day. Pet rabbits can develop severe dental problems if fed on a diet with too much concentrate (such as nuggets, pellets or commercial mixture) and too little fibre. Ideally, a medium sized adult rabbit should be fed no more than two egg-cups full of concentrate. Your rabbit should have good quality hay and/or grass available all the time (never lawnmower clippings). A daily handful of leafy greens such as cabbage, broccoli or kale is fine. Carrots and apples should only be fed in small amounts as occasional treats. Rabbits are social animals and should always be kept with a neutered companion rabbit which they have been bonded with. They need a hutch with shelter, with plenty of room to stretch out, and also an exercise area where they can move about freely. Handling rabbits can be difficult for young children. Rabbits have powerful back legs and can kick out and scratch their handler, as well as hurting themselves badly. Hold them with the hindquarters well supported so that they can’t kick. Children should always be supervised when handling rabbits. Veterinary care of your rabbit is also important. They need yearly vaccinations for two serious diseases – myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease. Rabbits should be neutered, to prevent unwanted litters and to prevent uterine cancer in females. You should check your rabbit daily, especially his teeth, and nails to make sure they are not too long and also to make sure that his bottom and tail area are clean and free of droppings. ow that spring is here and the nights are getting longer, the importance of securing your home, garage and cars is vitally important. The area, in general, is still being targeted by opportunistic offenders who find unlocked doors that allow them to gain entry to properties, your belongings and the keys to any vehicles. This should be considered when front doors are insecure and the family are enjoying time together in rear gardens. In relation to the vehicle crime offences that were reported back in December 2014, I am happy to advise that the male responsible was identified,
charged and has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal for their consideration. I am also pleased to inform you that reported monthly crime statistics for the Kingswells area remain low.

Pensions Rules are Changing: What You Need to Know
Whether this is possible largely depends on your employer, and they do not have any obligation to make contributions in these instances.

New legislation regarding annuities Until recently, when you retired you had no other option but to use your pension fund to buy an annuity. Annuities provide you with a fixed income for life, and even though the legislation has now changed, this product may still offer the most stable income for you in retirement.
If you’re confused by drawdown, annuity, tax wrappers and pots, you are definitely not alone. It sometimes feels like politicians are being deliberately obtuse - why don’t they use plain English when talking about pensions so we all know where we stand on this important issue?
The 2014 Budget saw changes to pension legislation. From 2015 you will not be forced to buy an annuity with your pension fund, but can use the money in other ways. As a general rule, people choose the ‘income drawdown’ option, an annuity, or a mixture of the two.
Pensions are generally seen as the normal investment option when you start work. Although other choices are available, including property or stocks and shares, saving into a private pension does offer the following tax advantages: • • •
Some finance experts advise people to buy a fixed annuity that covers projected living expenses over their remaining lifetime, spending the rest of their pension pot on products that stand a greater chance of beating inflation.
The government pays tax relief on your payments You’re not taxed on the money in your pension pot (up to certain limits) At pension age you can withdraw a percentage of your pension as a tax-free lump sum
But what about the State Pension – won’t that provide the income I need in retirement? State Pension rules are set to change from 2016 when a weekly flat rate will be introduced. The intention is to simplify the State Pension, making it fairer for all as well as easier for the government to administrate. These are some of the new rules, should you reach State Pension age on or after April 6th 2016: • • • • • •
The full pension amount will be a minimum of £148.40 per week (the actual amount to be decided upon in late 2015) At least 10 qualifying years are needed to receive the new State Pension The total number of qualifying years for eligibility has increased from 30 to 35 Each individual will qualify for their own pension entitlement, rather than using the joint couple’s rate There will be no means testing for pension credit entitlement The cap on state pensions for the self-employed will be removed
Auto enrolment Auto enrolment is new legislation that obliges employers to offer eligible employees a workplace pension. The new scheme, which was introduced in October 2012, is being rolled out to include all UK employers by February 2018.
As with any financial product, you need to shop around for the best deal rather than sticking with your pension provider, who may not offer you an attractive rate. There has been some talk in the media of annuity mis-selling, so you should take the time to compare various products on the market rather than remaining ‘loyal’ to your pension company. What is income drawdown? Income drawdown is an alternative to buying an annuity. You buy stocks, shares and other investments and take a regular income by cashing them in over time, with 25% of each ‘drawdown’ being tax-free. This is viewed as being riskier than an annuity as investments can go up or down, but if you are not risk averse and you have a larger pension pot of £100,000 or more, the rewards can be greater. Income drawdown is a complicated option with high fees and charges, and it will not be right for everybody, but there is a middle-ground that offers the security of an annuity with a little more flexibility. An investment-linked annuity There are two types of investment-linked annuity: • •
Unit-linked: these depend on the performance of stocks, shares and other investments With-profits: these retain part of your return in highperforming years for use if investment performance declines
Currently, if you earn a minimum annual salary of £10,000, are aged between 22 years and the State Pension age, and work under a contract of employment in the UK, you are entitled to automatic enrolment on a workplace pension.
Charges and fees for pension products can be high, and serve to reduce the overall value of your fund. That’s why you need the advice and guidance of a professional financial expert to cut through the jargon, clearly explain what you are buying, and tell you the true cost of the product.•
Your employer makes their contribution and you get tax relief on your pension payments. If you already make contributions to a workplace scheme meeting government requirements, you don’t need to be enrolled in a new scheme. If you don’t meet the eligibility criteria for automatic enrolment, you may still have the right to opt-in.

Our names are Connor and Julia and we are the P7 members of the Pupil Council. In the head teacher selection process, we interviewed Mrs Maclver with questions about what she would do in her new job at Kingswells Primary School. The Pupil Council asked questions such as:

Science Fair In Kingswells School we continue to have a strong focus on science. Next term our P7s will try out being science investigators. They will each choose a key question, research it, devise a hypothesis, plan and carry out an investigation and present their results. Their work will form our Science Fair, which will be displayed in the Kingswells community centre of the afternoon of Wednesday 20th May. Everyone is welcome to come along and see their work and vote on which pupil they feel has carried out the best scientific investigation. The pupils will be on hand to explain their work. Kingswells School P6s Trip to Edinburgh I woke up in the morning with unstoppable excitement pouring over me. Finally the day had come. I was going to Edinburgh! At rocket speed I got ready, and before I knew it, it was time to leave. All the P6 pupils, teachers, and other adults were gathered in the gym hall. We made our way to the bus and soon the engine was starting. I was feeling nervous but ecstatic as I waved to my dad. The bus journey seemed surprisingly short and soon we had arrived at Our Dynamic Earth. We started off with an interesting workshop about glaciers, finding out what causes glaciers and all the different types. Then we had lunch and then went to a time machine! Being in the time machine felt incredible, with lots of different effects. Then we walked into a new room and learnt about the Big

Bang Theory which some scientists believe in. We also learnt about different places on the Earth and then got to explore the museum. I found Dynamic Earth quite fascinating.
The next stop was Edinburgh Zoo. We began with looking at the ultra-hyper monkeys! Then we had a workshop about
Next we were due at the Portrait Gallery where we split into two groups and explored the gallery. My group started at the library where we looked at astonishing sculptures and exquisite paintings. Then we visited a hall with paintings on every wall. We looked at a couple of paintings and then got to draw one ourselves. The visit was very intriguing. By the time we were on the bus to Premier Inn, I was elated. We arrived and found out who our room-mates were. I was in a two with Katy so we both got our own key. Our room was immaculate and exceedingly comfy. We had a single bed and a double bed and our own bathroom. We also had our own dressing table. We got changed for going to Pizza Hut and bowling, and then listened to some music. I also took some photos and played some games. Then somebody knocked on the door and gave the password so we opened it. It was time to go to Pizza Hut! At Pizza Hut we were offered endless stacks of pizza until we were afraid of popping. We also got hot chips, onion rings and garlic bread. Going to Pizza Hut was definitely an enjoyable experience!!! Fortunately bowling was only a short walk from Pizza Hut. We got into teams of five and six and started bowling. Unfortunately for me, there were no sides up. I probably scored less than four out of ten each time.

We watched pandas, hippos, red squirrels, sun bears, zebras, lions, penguins, wallabies and millions of other animals. Then we had a provided lunch and then visited the gift shop. There was a ginormous variety to choose from but eventually I settled with a fluffy panda to put on your seatbelt. Before we knew it the bus was there to pick us up. Eventually, the sides were put up. Finally the game was over, and surprisingly, I came second! At about nine o’clock, we crept into Premier Inn, in hope of the winning who was quieter award, out of the boys and the girls.(We won!) We got into our room, got changed into our PJ’s and got ready for bed. We read books for a about 15 minutes and listened to music. We eventually got settled for bed full of excitement for tomorrow… We woke bright and early (6am) full of energy for the zoo! We got changed quickly, bursting with excitement, packed our bags, locked our room and met everybody at the end of the corridor. We then had a delightful premier inn breakfast, complete with bacon, eggs, hashbrowns, sausages, cereal, muffins and croissants! (Which everyone definitely loved!)

Kingswells Parish Church Christian Aid Week is from Sunday 10 May until Saturday 16 May. If you can help in any way to deliver and collect envelopes in Kingswells please contact Chris Maxwell on 01224 743857. Many helpers make light work!! It would be great if we could cover the whole village! We have just celebrated Easter, a time when we thank God for the gift, sacrifice and resurrection of his Son and the unconditional love he offers us all. As always we welcome everyone to our services. Morning worship on Sundays is at 11.00am with a crèche and the Jaffa kids also meet at the same time. This is a great time for families and people of all ages to meet and share in the fellowship of the church. Coffee and tea are served after worship. Friendship is given and friendship is received.
The Choir will present a fund-raising Spring Concert of Scottish, Secular and Easter music on Friday 17 April at 7.30pm. Come and join us. Tickets available from Choir members and at the door of the Church (£5). Our Fun Day will be held on Saturday 6 June. Do not miss this event: there will be a BBQ and lots of games to enjoy. The Walking Group meets in the Church Car Park on Saturday 30 May at 9.30am (7 Wells) & on Saturday 27 June at 9.00am (Craig Leek). Future events – All-Age Walk and Picnic on Sunday 28 June following the morning service; and Church BBQ on Sunday 16 August following the morning service.
We have a Messy Church on Sunday 10th May and on Sunday 7th June. We start at 3.00pm and after a meal finish by 5.00pm. Our Bible Study Group meets each Tuesday in the Church Halls at 9.30am. All are welcome to share in a time when the Bible is explored: we learn from it how to meet the challenges of life and how to experience the love of God and share that love with others.
