But, just in case, the weather turns almighty on us then you can pop along to the Art Fair at the Music Hall on the weekend of 05-07 September. Whisky trail

Secret Malts of Aberdeenshire The active and lost whisky distilleries dotted around Aberdeenshire have been brought together for the first time. Aberdeenshire’s rich but under-recognised whisky heritage is being showcased with the council’s Secret Malts of Aberdeenshire guide. Aberdeenshire Council’s economic development team has been working in partnership with local whisky producers to highlight the hidden range of small distilleries all within an hour’s drive of Aberdeen. Targeting the tourism markets, both at home and abroad, whisky connoisseurs, local people and historians, The Secret Malts of Aberdeenshire guide highlights the fascinating history of eight local working distilleries. The comprehensive booklet also details the area’s “lost”, or non-operational, distilleries, as well as a guide to whisky tasting and the location of some specialist whisky retail outlets. Of the eight working distilleries featured in the guide, most are relatively small in scale but each has its own distinctive history, style and taste. Four of them have small visitor centres and shops offering regular tours led by knowledgeable guides. Three of the distilleries are not officially open to the public, but will organise informal tours, often led by the distillery manager who can offer a unique insight into how their whisky is made.

Whilst the Speyside area is rightly celebrated across the world for being the centre of Scotland’s Malt Whisky Trail, our relatively small and intimate distilleries also have a huge amount to offer to visitors and to the whisky connoisseur. Perhaps a little less well known, the flavours, quality and charm of these “secret malts” make it well worth the effort for us to highlight the trail and for visitors to seek them out. The industry supports 35,000 jobs and around £2 billion is being invested in infrastructure over the next two years. It is of vital importance to the economy.

Aberdeenshire’s eight working distilleries featured in the guide are: • Ardmore at Kennethmont • Fettercairn • Glendronach at Forgue • Glen Garioch at Oldmeldrum • Glenglassaugh at Portsoy • Knockdhu at Knock • Macduff • The Royal Lochnagar at Crathie

Brand, spanking, new...

Aberdeen Based Charity Future Choices had the best news lately, Apache Oil donated a brand new 17 seater disabled friendly bus. The Charity is Self funded and Voluntary run and helps provide social inclusion and recreational activities at Inchgarth Community Centre in Garthdee. The bus donation came after the Disabled Charity was featured in a National BBC2 Documentary last year called "Auction Hero", in which Presenter/Auctioneer Andrew Lamberty went all across Europe to buy and sell antiques, then donated the profits to the Charity. Representatives from Apache Oil saw the Documentary and were extremely impressed by the group’s work and dedication within the community and wanted to help their cause. The new bus has now given the charity a better chance of helping more disabled people, most of whom are stuck in their homes living with very little social life. David Forbes, Chairman of Future Choices described the news as "The turning point to the Charity, knowing Apache Oil has helped give us the tools to carry on with our hard work, it just means everything. So many people, especially those who just want out and have fun with friends, can now do that. Future Choices is there to help put those smiles and laughter back on the faces" The Charity is always looking for Volunteers to help out at their group. They meet on a Tuesday from 11-2 at Inchgarth Community Centre, if you want to become a volunteer or simply want to join the charity to meet new people, then contact David on 07821 700 046 or email info@future-choices.org.uk or visit their website at www.future-choices.org.uk

Dutch apple pie The buttery pastry for this deep dish pie is made with a mix of self-raising and plain flours which gives it a soft and cake-like texture. If you prefer a crisper pastry use all plain flour. Choose crisp sweet dessert apples such as Cox’s Orange Pippins or Discovery. Serves 8 200g plain flour 150g self raising flour 175 g unsalted butter, diced 150g caster sugar plus 1 tbsp for sprinkling 2 medium eggs, beaten 400g dessert apples, peeled, cored and sliced 75g raisins 75g light soft brown sugar 1 tbsp corn flour 1 tsp ground cinnamon 2 tbsp milk Whipped cream, to serve

1 To make the pastry, sift the plain and self- raising flours into a large bowl and add the diced butter. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour to make fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and beaten eggs and mix to a soft dough. Knead very lightly until smooth then wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 1 hour. 2 Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C fan/gas 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to pre-heat. 3 Roll out two-thirds of the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line the base of a 23 cm round loose-based fluted flan tin. 4 Toss the apple slices in a bowl with the raisins, brown sugar, cornflour and cinnamon then layer in the pastry case, pressing down gently. Roll out the remaining pastry and cut into strips. Arrange in a lattice pattern over the apples. Dab the edges of the strips with a little water and press firmly to seal. 5 Brush the top of the pie with milk and sprinkle over caster sugar. Place the flan case on the preheated baking sheet and bake for 35-40 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold with whipped cream. Tip Replace the apples with sliced pears or a mixture of summer berries such as blackberries, raspberries and blueberries.

Children’s Health: Measles, Mumps and Rubella Childhood diseases’ are often taken lightly, but they can be serious and with fewer children vaccinated, they’ve become more common again. MMR vaccine protects against mumps, measles and rubella, but some children (particularly those unvaccinated) will still catch them. Here’s a quick guide to symptoms and treatment. REMEMBER: Pre-warn your GP surgery before visiting, so they can take precautions against infection and protect pregnant women. Measles A virus that can be severe. Always confirm the diagnosis with the GP. Symptoms: • •

Begins like a bad cough and cold; a temperature develops On day 3 or 4, red raised spots appear, initially behind the ears then spreading to the face, neck and rest of the body. The spots may be blotchy, but not itchy.

• Your child’s eyes may be sensitive to light. Treatment: • Plenty of rest and drinks. • Paracetamol or ibuprofen for discomfort and fever. • Barrier cream to protect the skin around their lips. • Bathe sore eyelids with warm water, and dim lights. • If your child is drowsy, has trouble breathing or has a bad cough, see your GP urgently. DON’T FORGET: Keep your child away from pregnant women and those trying to conceive. If they had contact with any pregnant women (even before they became ill), you must let the women know - they’ll need to see their GP urgently. Incubation period: 7-12 days. Infectious period: Four days before rash appears until four days after it’s gone. Mumps A contagious viral infection. Symptoms:

• •

Begins with generally feeling ill and uncomfortable, and a raised temperature. Pain and swelling on the side of the face and

under the chin. Discomfort when chewing. Headache, stomach ache and joint pain. Your child’s face should return to normal in around a week. Mumps rarely affects boys’ testes but if your child’s testes are swollen or painful see your GP. Treatment: Confirm the diagnosis with the GP, as symptoms can be similar to glandular fever or tonsillitis. Always see the GP if your child develops stomach ache, is sick or develops a rash of bruises or small purple/red spots. • Give your child paracetamol or ibuprofen. A hot or cold compress will ease pain in their glands. • Give them plenty to drink Incubation period: 14-25 days. Infectious period: A few days before feeling unwell, until the swelling goes down. German Measles (Rubella) Rubella is difficult to diagnose, but you must confirm it with the GP. Rubella poses a significant risk to pregnant women and unborn babies.

•

Symptoms: • Begins much like a cold. • A rash of flat, light pink spots appears on day one or two, initially on the face then spreading to the rest of the body. • Swollen glands in the back of the neck. • Your child may feel ‘off-colour’ rather than ill. What to do: • Give your child plenty to drink, and paracetamol or ibuprofen if they feel unwell. Incubation period: 15-20 days. Infectious period: From one week before rash appears until at least five days after it’s gone.

Acupuncture

Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk

Origins and Principles Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese therapy. Practitioners believe that Qi or Ki (pronounced ‘chee’), a life force, flows through our bodies along paths called ‘meridians’; when this flow is blocked we become ill. Practitioners aim to restore the flow by stimulating some of the body’s 500+ acupuncture points, usually by skin-deep insertion of fine needles. Acupuncturists most commonly treat pain conditions including headache and lower back pain, but sometimes treat conditions including infertility, stress and asthma. Within the NHS, the availability of acupuncture is limited and only currently recommended as a potential treatment for persistent lower back pain. Having Acupuncture Treatment A typical session lasts 20-40 minutes, and the first session begins with a discussion of symptoms and general health, followed by a brief physical examination. Patients either lie down or sit while the practitioner inserts fine single-use pre-sterilised needles into specific acupuncture points, targeting the meridians – so the points stimulated – typically between 1 and 12 - aren’t always near the problem area. Some practitioners may gently twist or tap the needles. Practitioners may also use other techniques such as moxibustion (applying indirect heat via the burning of therapeutic herbs, or heat lamps), tuina (Chinese massage), electro-acupuncture (applying low frequency electrical current to needles), cupping (creating a vacuum seal on the skin) and guasha (vigorous rubbing of the skin). Efficacy and Evidence As yet there is no scientific evidence for the existence of Ki or meridians, but there is evidence that acupuncture may lessen back pain, migraine and post-operative nausea. Some researchers believe its efficacy may be due to the stimulation of nerves and muscle tissue.

Grow your own take-a Pippa Greenwood We all know that home-cooked food is better for us than a stream of takeaways, but then we all deserve a little selfindulgence from time to time. So why not save yourself the guilt (and some cash) and grow your own Chinese takeaway right here in your own garden? No I haven’t turned cookery writer, but you can easily grow some of those tasty and crunchy vegetables that make the backbone of many a Chinese stir-fry... and the great thing is that oriental vegetables do well from late summer sowings, so it’s off to the garden centre (not the takeaway) you go! Bean sprouts are so easy to grow you could almost do it with your eyes shut. The common types are sprouted mung-beans, and you can either buy packets of seed or a small packet of the beans themselves from your local health food store. They’ll come with easy cultivation instructions and before you know it you’ll have the

16

www.gazettemagazines.com t : 01224 949085

beginnings of a stir-fry. Mizuna has got to be one of the most attractive leafy vegetables you can grow. Its green leaves appear soon after sowing the seed in a pot or in open ground, and they add a great spicy flavour to your stir-fry and also add a zing to salads and sandwiches. And where would your Chinese meal be without that delicious Oriental veg, pak-choi. It’s another easy vegetable to grow late in the summer: just sow the seeds in a well-forked soil, water, and wait. Thin out as per the instructions of the seed packet

e : mail@gazettemagazines.com

away (you can eat the thinnings too), then just pinch off the roots and pop the plants into the wok. Pak-choi also grows well in a container of multipurpose compost. Garlic is another essential ingredient. It’s not really the right time of year to plant garlic, but for an unexpected little extra take a few spare cloves and pot them in trays of compost. Keep the compost slightly moist and in a week or two the cloves will start to sprout. What you’re after here aren’t the sprouts though, but the bright green foliage which adds a definitely garlicy flavour to stir-fries and a touch of colour as well. Radishes add heat as well as crunch, and there are some lovely oriental varieties such as Mantanhong, which is a British-bred Chinese variety with a superbly crunchy bright red-to-pink inner flesh and spherical white roots – great for colour and texture and with a sweet almost nutty flavour. Sow in open ground or pots from now until early September for cropping in a few weeks’ time. Spring onions are another classic stir-fry component. You won’t get a fully mature crop for harvesting this year unless you’re extremely lucky; but what you will get is a super-young onion that will add both colour and intense flavour to the contents of your wok. And finally, mushrooms will add a meaty texture to your home-grown vegetable stir-fry. Kits for

growing both oyster and field mushrooms are available in many garden centres or by mail order. It’s not always easy to get right, I know, but the challenge is definitely worth it when you have exotic mushrooms growing in your cellar, garden frame, greenhouse, or shed. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com for her “Winter thru Spring” vegetable collection, plants for September, regular advice emails from Pippa, and a range of gardening products including Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh & Envirofleece

What happened in… August 1997 By Patrick D Cousins

Early on the morning of Sunday, 31st of August, 1997, I was driving into London on the A40 and the news bulletin came on the radio as I was passing RAF Northolt. Later that day a plane of the Royal Squadron would touch down at that aerodrome, carrying the body of Diana, Princess of Wales. 3rd: Two of the three islands of the Union of Comoros, off the eastern coast of Africa, near Mozambique, began negotiations in an attempt to return to French colonial rule, but Jacques Chirac’s government said “non merci”. Can’t be all bad then, this colonialism, can it? 4th: Jeanne Calment, the oldest person in recorded history, died in France at the age of 122 years, 164 days. Mme Calment lived on her

own until she was 110, and is the only person known to have celebrated her 120th birthday. 5th: With APPL just weeks away from bankruptcy Microsoft invested $150 million in the ailing Apple, which recovered and eventually overtook its saviour/competitor. 21st: Typhoon Winnie killed 140 people In East China and injured over 3,000. Be Here Now, the third album by Oasis, became the fastest selling album in UK history, selling over 350,000 copies on its first day.

Some things never change. 28th: Thrill seekers on a roller coaster in Belgium were left hanging upside down for ninety minutes after the ride jammed. A little more suspense than they had bargained for maybe. 30th: An 83-year-old Greek man killed his wife because she ‘had a headache’. I don’t know what became of him after that but I like to think he is now with someone more compatible. Life List 24 Hindsight Parenting Tips by Derek Thompson Parenthood and grandparenthood may make us revise our opinions of how we were brought up. Thanks to the gift of hindsight, you can now see both sides of the coin. It’s not about being right all the time; it’s about being there. There are two ears and one mouth, because you need to listen twice as much as you need to speak. You’re never too old to play and should never be too proud to lose from time to time. The question, ‘Why?’ can be answered, after the seventh time with, ‘Why do you think?’ Even stories from long ago have to be relevant. Toast is not a meal, unless it has beans or cheese on it (in which case it’s a light meal, requiring a dessert afterwards).

The Return of the Red Squirrel Staff from the Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels (SSRS) project are appealing to the public to help report any sightings of red or grey squirrels.

As autumn approaches squirrels are on the move and can turn up in your garden or local woods. y o u R We know there are still some grey squirrels around the west side of the city but has anyone seen red squirrels locally? Red squirrels are doing very well in Hazlehead and Countesswells so they are not far away. In the last year we have run very successful guided walks in the woods at the Crematorium- on one we saw five red squirrels at once! They are doing very well in Den Wood as well- survey work has shown they are now widespread in the woods!

As SSRS enters its sixth year, our work in Scotland’s northeast will continue to focus on targeted and co-ordinated trapping of grey squirrels. Trapping figures were encouraging last year, helped in large part by members of the public hosting a trap in their garden. Detailed study of our trapping work has shown it really does work- grey squirrel numbers have dropped rapidly and in many areas the reds bounce right back! We are heavily reliant on the public to report their squirrel sightings of both reds and greys via the website www.scottishsquirrels.org.uk. The Project is keen to improve our coverage in the area. If you would like to find out about our trap-loan scheme then please feel free to get in touch with Project Officer, Stephen Willis. We can be reached by email on swillis@ scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk or by phone on 01224 266526.

From an early age I began to watch various cooking programmes- ‘Masterchef’ being one of them and it is from this my interest in cooking has grown. I would say it is my hobby because I am a keen (although not very good) cook and I try out recipes quite regularly.

Over the years I have observed many chefs through the TV, what I find fascinating is the whole process and the masterpiece created in such a short space of time and while under pressure. Although the mains are spectacular, I have to swing towards the desserts as being extraordinary and my favourite to watch. Some of my inspirational chefs include: The Incredible Spice Men, Michel Roux Junior, Ping Coombes (recent Masterchef winner) and Jamie Oliver. They are all extremely talented but each have their own unique flair which is refreshing to watch. I aim to cook more often but so far a few simple dishes I have created are; enchiladas, turkey curry, fajitas and steak pie. The great fact about them is that they are easy to make and delicious! Anyone can give these dishes a go and it’s guaranteed to work. Hopefully I will be able to explore more complex recipes with several components to juggle in the near future. In several weeks I will be attending a cooking class, due to a voucher I received for my birthday. This will involve myself and my granny attempting to make a chicken biryani. It sounds fantastic and it will be a great experience however the challenge will be getting it to taste perfect! My all-time favourite dishes are fish and chips and steak and chips. A theme of chips is clear here but it’s really all types of meat I like from duck to venison to salmon. They are classic meals that taste brilliant. I hope I have given you an insight into my hobby, let’s just hope the biryani goes to plan…

The Alizonne Diet – what the heck is that! In an endeavour to find out exactly what the Alizonne diet was, I paid a visit to Temple Medical in West Craibstone Street, Aberdeen. Dr Sam Robson has been advertising with me for a very long time and 18 months ago invited me to come and try it out! I dismissed it as another fad. Well having seen the results on the back of the West End magazines for the last 18 months I decided that maybe this was the way forward. I don’t really know when I started to gain weight. I was always told, you’re tall, and you can carry it! Well it was back in April that I wasn’t feeling very good about myself so stepped on the scales, yet again, in an attempt to make me wake up and smell the coffee. And another stone, yes another 14 pounds of FAT had crept on. I tell you I didn’t even notice. Yes the clothes were feeling tighter and if I had a full length mirror I might have glanced and thought – bit chunky – but I don’t, probably for that very reason. Anyway, cutting to the chase I made an appointment to see Sam about advertising and thought I’ll enquire and find out more about Alizonne. After a tour of the new premises, very nice by the way, I was shown to the top of the building. Three flights of stairs; this is where the Alizonne treatments take place. No oxygen mask was to be seen at the top – just a fancy machine that looks like a hoover, a set of electronic scales, blood pressure monitor and some battery looking objects. Maybe this is why it’s called a medical diet. Back to ground level Sam got talking. The fact she had a pound of fat sitting on her desk which is not particularly attractive, her positive and enthusiastic way of talking about the amazing results that were happening on a daily basis, I knew at that point she had me! She said have a think about it and then phone and book an initial consultation if you are serious about the diet. She did say that I could be put off of the diet at any time if I didn’t follow it to the “T”. I wasn’t about to be the first to be kicked off – I’ll show you I can do it – however challenging it may become.

I am not going to lie and say it is only £5 a week and you step on some scales and told you’ve lost xyz pounds. It is not a cheap option. It does not involve surgery of any kind. It does involve a HUGE COMMITMENT. A slight re-arrangement of your social activities for the initial phase and a will of steel! You will require the ability to say NO, and to mean it. Alcohol has to be given up too… but you can still have tea and coffee J Armed with the telephone, I dialled the number – 01224 869997… Within five minutes I had an initial consultation and had parted with a chunk of money. My appointment wasn’t for another ten days… but I was determined I would start the way I meant to go on. Let the calorie counting begin… … I have actually now started the diet and have been on it for 14 weeks at the time of going to print. I am being complimented all the time in the weight loss, shrunk several dress sizes and feel pretty good about myself. I don’t want to say too much more in this article, but you can read my blog on the website as I have been keeping a diary. If you are interested and want to ask me about the diet, please feel free to get in touch, I’m more than happy to share my experience. My before, after and in between pictures I’ll share in the magazines when I’m complete. I am only at the end of Phase 1 and there are 7 more phases to go. Alizonne is changing my life. The weight loss is helping me live longer. The exercise is keeping me fit and active. The confidence in me has grown tenfold and I’m getting ready to embrace Phase 2.

http://www.gazettemagazines.com/blog-alizonne/ http://www.templemedical.co.uk/alizonne/ The top link will take you to my blog. The second link will take you to the temple medical web page and there are pictures and videos of people who have been on the diet and their results. I would just like to say that I embarked on the diet for my own health reasons. It will not be for everyone, but if you are serious about losing weight and have tried everything else then this might just work for you. Do not hesitate to get in touch with me to ask any questions. mail@gazettemagazines.com put in the subject line Alizonne and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. Words by Sue Simpson
