Successfully introducing local people - local businesses

A note from Sue... Silence! No traffic! Yes, schools are out and summer holidays have begun. If you are away or are going away – have a great time. For those staying at home, let’s hope the sun keeps on shining and the children are able to enjoy playing outdoors with their friends. You must try and get along to the International Youth Festival; it really is worth the effort. What about the wonderful dolphins that have popped up all over Aberdeen, have you spotted them all? Were you lucky enough to get tickets for the Commonwealth Games? Why not let us know what your highlights were. A warm gazette welcome to our new advertisers. Lovely to have you in the magazine and I do hope the readers will enjoy paying you a visit. Congratulations to Elaine at Junction Arts who has just celebrated her sixth birthday as a business. If you haven’t been to Junction Arts yet it really is an affordable treasure trove. Please mark on your calendars for the Aberdeen Art Fair in September – again an opportunity to view some amazing art on one weekend at the Music Hall. The clubs and classes have also swelled this issue and the listings for the Aberdeen Performing Arts have something for everyone. So why not pour yourself a Pimm’s and head out into the garden and enjoy this issue of the gazette. See you in the autumn.

Whisky trail

Secret Malts of Aberdeenshire The active and lost whisky distilleries dotted around Aberdeenshire have been brought together for the first time. Aberdeenshire’s rich but under-recognised whisky heritage is being showcased with the council’s Secret Malts of Aberdeenshire guide. Aberdeenshire Council’s economic development team has been working in partnership with local whisky producers to highlight the hidden range of small distilleries all within an hour’s drive of Aberdeen. Targeting the tourism markets, both at home and abroad, whisky connoisseurs, local people and historians, The Secret Malts of Aberdeenshire guide highlights the fascinating history of eight local working distilleries. The comprehensive booklet also details the area’s “lost”, or non-operational, distilleries, as well as a guide to whisky tasting and the location of some specialist whisky retail outlets. Of the eight working distilleries featured in the guide, most are relatively small in scale but each has its own distinctive history, style and taste. Four of them have small visitor centres and shops offering regular tours led by knowledgeable guides. Three of the distilleries are not officially open to the public, but will organise informal tours, often led by the distillery manager who can offer a unique insight into how their whisky is made.

Whilst the Speyside area is rightly celebrated across the world for being the centre of Scotland’s Malt Whisky Trail, our relatively small and intimate distilleries also have a huge amount to offer to visitors and to the whisky connoisseur. Perhaps a little less well known, the flavours, quality and charm of these “secret malts” make it well worth the effort for us to highlight the trail and for visitors to seek them out. The industry supports 35,000 jobs and around £2 billion is being invested in infrastructure over the next two years. It is of vital importance to the economy.

Aberdeenshire’s eight working distilleries featured in the guide are: • Ardmore at Kennethmont • Fettercairn • Glendronach at Forgue • Glen Garioch at Oldmeldrum • Glenglassaugh at Portsoy • Knockdhu at Knock • Macduff • The Royal Lochnagar at Crathie

Happy snapping How to get the best from your phone photos and videos Think of the last time you took a photograph or recorded a video. What did you use? For most of us, the answer will be “my phone”: in a very short space of time phone cameras have replaced traditional cameras for most people’s everyday shooting. However, not everyone is getting the most from their phone’s camera - and a few apps and accessories can make an enormous difference. One of the most common problems with smartphone clips is the washed-out effect you get when you use the flash. While some recent smartphones use LED flashes to try and address this, it’s better if you just turn the flash off altogether: apps such as Google Camera, Apple’s iPhoto and Camera+ enable you to change the exposure, which affects how much light the camera lets in: the longer the exposure, the better the low-light performance. Another problem that affects many photos and videos is camera shake. While many phones attempt to compensate for this they can’t get rid of it completely, so if you’re finding blur is a problem it’s a good idea to invest in a phone tripod such as Joby’s GripTight (around £20), which can grip to almost anything and ensure shake-free shooting. If you fancy getting creative with your camera there are lots of options to choose from, from cheap and cheerful wide-angle lenses to Sony’s truly impressive QX10 Lens. It isn’t cheap - the RRP is £179 - but it adds a wireless, 18 megapixel lens with 10X optical zoom to deliver photographs you simply won’t believe came from a smartphone. Another way to get creative is to use specialist apps. The aforementioned Camera+ and iPhoto enable you to apply filters that make your images look ancient, while 8mm does the same for video by applying vintage camera filters ranging from Super 8-style footage to what looks like an early black and white movie. iStopMotion

6

www.thegranitecitygazette.co.uk

makes it easy to create Wallace and Gromit-style stop motion videos, while Filmic Pro offers a range of professional video features that turn an iPhone into a powerful high definition video camera. There’s one big problem with smartphone shooting, though, and that’s the smartphone itself: the screen is too small and the speakers too quiet for you to spot audio and video issues that are really obvious on a big TV. For best results it’s always a good idea to edit your images and video on your computer, and there are several ways to transfer it: via the USB cable that came with your device, or by taking out the memory card (if your phone uses one) and popping it into a card reader. Many recent PCs have memory card slots that take the industry standard SD/SDHC memory cards, but if you don’t have one or you want the option to use multiple memory card formats it’s worth investing £10 or so in a memory card reader that plugs into a spare USB socket. There’s no shortage of software for editing images on PCs and Macs: both Mac OS X and Windows have decent built-in image editors, while the free paint.net (on PC) and The GIMP (PC and Mac) deliver professional image editing for free. You can get decent video editing for free too: Lightworks on PC is great, as is Apple’s own iMovie. Both programs make it easy to clean up and edit your clips.

Beer of the month By Ted Bruning

It’s July, and July in the USA is when they have cook-outs and parades and fireworks and... beer! American beer used to be bland. The malt was padded out with rice, and the hops were introduced only briefly to the brewingkettle. They were served so cold and gassy that whatever character they did possess was obliterated. Thirty years ago a friend of mine used to take a phial of hop oil and a swizzle-stick with him on trips to the States to add flavour to his beer and dissipate the CO2. Thankfully, things have changed since microbrewing started in earnest, and here are two beers that don’t need dosing and stirring. Sierra Nevada was founded in 1980 in Chico, California, and the 5.6% abv Pale Ale was its firstborn brew. It’s bottled with yeast, so the fine mousse and deep head are natural. Its aroma has the piney freshness characteristic of the American Cascade hop, but there’s also toffee in both aroma and flavour. The finish is only slightly bitter (which is how Americans like it), and gives way to more toffee sweetness. From Goose island Brewery in Chicago (founded 1988) comes the 5.9% India Pale Ale. IPAs were brewed strong and hoppy to survive the long sea-voyage to India in the days of the Raj; but here the hops are American rather than British so don’t have the aggressive bitterness we would expect. The beer is light for its strength, and the dominant note throughout is fresh hay. It smells and tastes like a stable with a short, fresh, tangy finish.

Stars

New York Mo

James Baggott

The New York Motor Show might not be the biggest event on the automotive calendar, but there were some still some treats in store for car fans in the Big Apple. Land Rover Discovery Concept It was launched on an aircraft carrier, next to a spaceship, with the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop - this launch is a massive deal for the manufacturer. It’s packed with tech, including augmented reality that can project sat nav directions onto the smart glass windscreen, gesture controls that open doors without touch and the ability to remotely drive the car using a tablet or smart phone. How much will make it into production is unclear, but it’s exciting stuff. Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe The world’s chief executives are sure to make their next meeting on time thanks to this luxury missile. With 577bhp under the bonnet, the monster S63 AMG Coupe can hit 60mph in just 3.9 seconds. It has a 5.5-litre turbocharged V8 engine and an interior that’ll please those used to five star hotels. Air suspension, an imaginatively-titled Magic Body Control system and other trickery helps keep caramel lattes from spilling on Saville Row suits. On sale in November it will cost £100,000.

www.thegranitecitygazette.co.uk

Ford Mustang 50th Anniversary It wouldn’t be an American motor show without some muscle, and thankfully Ford has been taking its protein shakes and come up with this. The night before the show, Ford chopped one up and rebuilt it on the 86th floor of the Empire State Building, recreating a stunt they pulled off with the original back in 1954. It’s only available in blue or white, has a retro four speed auto box and chrome detailing. Under the “hood” is a 5.0-litre V8 producing 414bhp. Kia Sedona At last, Kia’s not-so-pretty Sedona MPV has been given the same plastic-surgery treatment as the rest of the range. The new model might still be a little bit van-like, but with the trademark Kia tiger nose and smart headlights, it looks a lot more stylish – and it needed it.

BMW M4 Convertible Convertible? Cabriolet? We’re not sure which term the Germans prefer, but all we know is the BMW M4 looks absolutely stunning with its roof

10

chopped off. The M4 features a clever three-piece folding metal roof and some not-so-subtle design tweaks. These include quad tailpipes, a larger front bumper and a tweaked kidney grille. The convertible will go on sale in September costing £60,730 with a 3.0-litre turbocharged six cylinder. The 0-60mph time is now down to 4.6 seconds.

The MPV has seating for eight as well as some clever trickery that can fold seats away and remove them.

otor Show BMW X4 There were a number of models that didn’t make our top cars of the show cut, and this X4 was very nearly one of them. Let’s face it, the crossover fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. The maker has form here - apparently 240,000 people bought the equally visuallychallenged X6. Borrowing engines from the X3, the X4 will go on sale priced from £35,590 – that’s a lot of money for a car only a mother could love. So why’s it included here? Well, we like manufacturers being brave – and revealing this with a straight face was certainly that...

MUSSEL AND POTATO CHOWDER This filling meal-in-a-bowl makes a lovely weekend supper that’s ready in less than an hour. Most supermarket fresh fish counters sell bags of fresh mussels all year round, but if they are unavailable you can use 2 x 500g packs of mussels in white wine sauce and just reduce the fish stock to 300ml and omit the white wine. Serves 4 Ready in 45 minutes Ingredients 1kg fresh mussels 1 tbsp olive oil 15g butter 4 shallots, peeled and finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 100ml white wine 2 baking potatoes, peeled and cut into small chunks 350ml fish stock made with ½ stock cube 200ml crème fraiche 4 tbsp fresh chopped flat leaf parsley Warm ciabatta or sour dough bread, to serve Method First clean the mussels. Scrub under cold running water and discard any that are cracked or do not close when lightly tapped. Pull away the ‘beards’ from the sides of the shells. Place in a bowl and set aside. Heat the oil and butter in a large deep saucepan or flameproof casserole. Add the

12

www.thegranitecitygazette.co.uk

shallots and fry gently for 5-6 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic and fry for 1-2 minutes then pour in the wine and cook for a further minute Add the potatoes and stir well. Pour in the stock and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes until the potatoes are tender. Stir in the crème fraiche and half the chopped parsley and season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add the cleaned mussels to the pan and cover and cook for 3-4 minutes until the mussels have opened – discard any that remain closed. Ladle the chowder into warmed bowls and garnish with the rest of the parsley and more ground black pepper. Serve with warm ciabatta or sour dough bread. TIP For a spicy Thai-style chowder, add 1 deseeded and chopped red chilli to the fried shallots and 1 bruised stalk of lemon grass to the simmering liquid. Replace the crème fraiche with 150ml coconut milk and the chopped parsley with coriander. Serve with steamed jasmine rice.

Peach gallette

Make a well in the centre and add the egg yolks and water. Stir with a round-bladed knife to form a crumbly dough (add a little extra cold water if the mix is too dry). Gather the mixture together with your hands and knead gently until just smooth. Wrap the pastry in cling film and chill in the fridge for about 40 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas mark 6. Lightly grease a large baking sheet. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface to a rough circle about 30cm in diameter. Transfer to the baking sheet.

This divine summer dessert just couldn’t be easier to make – no flan tin and no baking blind! Make sure you have a good solid baking sheet to bake the galette on as this will ensure a crisp pastry base. You can replace the fresh peaches with drained canned peaches, if liked. Serves 6 Ready in 50 minutes, plus chilling Ingredients 225g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 150g unsalted butter, diced 100g ground almonds 4 tbsp caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling 2 large egg yolks blended with 2 tbsp ice cold water 6 large fresh, ripe peaches, skinned, stoned and sliced Beaten egg, to glaze 1 tbsp pistachio nuts, chopped Vanilla ice cream, to serve

Sprinkle the rest of the ground almonds in the centre of the pastry circle, leaving a 7cm border. Arrange the peach slices on top of the almonds. Fold the pastry border inwards – just over the edges of the peach slices. Brush the pastry edge with beaten egg and sprinkle over the chopped pistachios. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is crisp and golden. Sprinkle over the rest of the sugar and serve warm or cold with scoops of vanilla ice cream. TIP To skin peaches, score a cross in the skin with the tip of a knife then cover with boiling water for 1-2 minutes. Drain and cover with cold water for a further minute – the skins should peel off easily.

Method To make the pastry, sift the flour into a large bowl. Add the butter and using your fingertips rub it into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in half the ground almonds and half the sugar.

Perfect N

You might spend a lot of time and money buying-up and trying-out the latest skincare, hair care and cosmetic products, but do you pay as much attention to your nails? It’s certainly easy to overlook your hands and nails, but you really shouldn’t, because they’re often as noticeable to new people as your face; after all, a handshake is the first introduction. Un-manicured nails can really let the side down, especially when you’re otherwise well-groomed and neatly presented. But there’s no denying that it’s hard to keep your nails in tip-top condition. Washing-up, cleaning, cooking, and all those other unavoidable daily chores pose a threat to nails, not to mention cold weather, regular hand washing and the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Even so, it’s worth establishing a hand and nail care routine and then planning a time every couple of weeks when you can treat yourself to a visit to your local nail salon. There’s more than one option though so we’ve taken an in-depth look at three of the most recent - and popular - nail services.

Nails

CND Shellac Nails

Shellac has definitely been one of the most popular nail services of recent years. Its simple application, smudgeproof finish and effective staying power have secured legions of loyal followers.

Helen Taylor

Applied much like a regular nail polish, Shellac only requires a few minutes of curing time under a special UV lamp between coats. When you leave the salon your nail polish will be completely dry and you can enjoy chipproof, glossy, lasting colour that stays looking great for at least 14 days. In fact, Shellac often stays looking so good that it only really needs to be removed when an obvious gap has emerged due to natural nail growth.

Minx Nails If it’s statement nails you’re after then Minx Nails are the perfect choice for you. Bringing fashion to your fingertips, Minx have been a favourite with celebrities everywhere since stepping into the spotlight a few years ago. Offering a vast choice of designs in showstopping colours, patterns and prints, there’s no chance you’ll ever get bored when you choose a set of Minx nails. Minx work on both natural and artificially enhanced nails. Before application nails are given a basic manicure. Minx is a solid film with an adhesive backing that is heat activated - that’s why nails and Minx are heated before application begins. The heat allows Minx to take on the natural curve of the nail and bond to the surface effectively.

It also offers the benefit of protecting your nails against breakage meaning you can keep the length much longer than you might usually be able to. When you are ready to have the Shellac removed, a set of foils soaked in acetone are wrapped round your fingers, although some salons may speed the process by asking you to put your fingertips into a bowl of acetone. This soaking process takes about 10 minutes and then the old polish is gently scraped off and nails buffed to prepare for the new coat. There is no ‘infill’ option – even if your polish still looks great, when it has grown out you’ll need to start again. Shellac isn’t suitable for everyone though; if your nails are weak, brittle or splitting opting for a set of Shellac nails - or any artificial nail enhancement - isn’t the best option. Nails and nail beds need to be healthy before application.

17

Whilst still underneath a special infrared lamp, the Minx is smoothed out and filed to fit with the nail. The process is very gentle on natural nails and with a waterproof seal, it means they won’t get damaged when you swim, bath, wash-up or do any other day-to-day tasks. The seal is only broken when they are removed. They’ll last around 14 days. Removal is easy - the product is heated up, the seal is broken and the Minx is peeled off. Long lasting Nail polish

You might wonder why anyone would still have traditional nail polish when Shellac and Minx last so much longer. There are several

reasons. Firstly you might want a shade for a special occasion or to go with a particular outfit, without necessarily wanting to keep the same colour for weeks. It’s quicker to put on normal polish and much quicker to take it off. This not only saves time, but will usually be a lower priced treatment or you can do it at home. Particularly for a pedicure, when normal polish will often last weeks anyway, this might be a better option. And the choice of colours is much greater so you can get that perfect match if you need it. Some of the new salon polishes dry very quickly too (such as CND’s Vinylux), so whilst it won’t be as instantly ‘set’ as Shellac or Minx, your finger and toenails will be complete dry and hard within a couple of hours.

Have a Healthy Holiday

You’ve booked the perfect holiday in the ideal destination. In your dreams you’re already there, sunbathing, sightseeing and relaxing with a good book - but it could turn into a nightmare unless you ensure you’ve got your holiday health covered beforehand.

Holidaying in the UK If you’re holidaying in the UK, it’s easier; food, drink, transport and healthcare are all familiar and there’s no language barrier. You should still arrange travel insurance though, in case an accident or illness means your holiday is cancelled or cut short. If you’re planning to go way off the beaten track or hill climbing, check the weather forecast first. Wear appropriate footwear and ensure you take your mobile (fully charged), warm waterproof clothing and a first aid kit. Take a map too and make sure everyone knows the route (if only one person does, what happens if they’re injured and lose consciousness, or can’t walk?). Plan walks realistically as you’ll be slower over rough terrain. These things sound simple but many deaths are caused every year by ignoring these precautions.

Holidaying Abroad Read your guidebook and information from your travel company well in advance and visit http:// www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk at least 8 weeks before departure for specific precautions for your destination. Make sure you’re aware of: Air travel health and safety Newborn babies and women over 36 weeks pregnant (32 weeks if it’s a multiple pregnancy) can’t www.thegranitecitygazette.co.uk

Inside aeroplanes the air is very dry. Stay well hydrated and avoid alcohol, as this will dehydrate you and altitude increases its effects. Ask your doctor’s advice if you are concerned about DVT (deep vein thrombosis) or if you’ve given birth in the last two months. The risk of DVT can be reduced by walking, stretching, avoiding alcohol and caffeine, and keeping well hydrated. Compression stockings may also help if fitted and worn correctly. Local laws and customs Beware different traffic signals and different laws particularly about standards of dress.

If you’re going to a beach that’s out of the way, check it’s safe for swimming. Concealed rocks and debris can be dangerous and the UK coast harbours creatures that can deliver a nasty sting – check the useful guide to them here: http://bit.ly/1m9uFYJ

travel by air, and it’s also not advised if you’ve had a recent stroke, heart attack, surgery or trauma, or if you have a communicable disease or certain conditions affecting your ears, chest, head or cardiovascular system. Insurance can become void if you ignore advice about pre-existing conditions or conceal them, so check with your doctor.

Food and water safety Always wash your hands before and after using the toilet or handling food, and pack sanitizer gel or wipes in case hand-washing facilities are unclean or non-existent. If you’re not sure the water is safe, don’t drink it or use it for brushing teeth unless it’s boiled or treated with purification tablets – otherwise stick to bottled water. Avoid ice cubes too. Choose well-cooked, freshly prepared food where you can (especially if buying from street vendors), and avoid salads, shellfish and ice-cream (unless it’s from a large commercial manufacturer). Thoroughly clean or peel fruit and vegetables. Health precautions Depending on where you’re going, there may be a risk of malaria and it shouldn’t be taken lightly; it can be fatal. Use repellents on exposed skin and repellents and/

or insecticides around your room and on mosquito screens and your clothing, as mosquitoes may bite through it. Wear long trousers or longsleeved tops, particularly after dark. Anti-malarial tablets need to be started before you go and must be continued (sometimes for up to 4 weeks) when you return. Pack a supply of diarrhoea medication so it’s close by if needed. Vaccinations Again, requirements depend on destination; check http://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk at least 8 weeks before travel to find specific guidelines for the country you’re visiting as some vaccines are given in several doses, and factor in other countries you may plan to visit on holiday. Carry proof of vaccinations – some countries will require an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP). Hepatitis A, cholera, typhoid and DTP (diphtheria, tetanus and polio) should all be free, but you’ll have to pay for yellow fever, encephalitis, meningitis, rabies, tuberculosis and hepatitis B (unless it’s given as a combined hepatitis A and B vaccine).

Rules about prescribed medication Always take a copy of your prescription and a doctor’s letter too, including your personal details, travel dates and details of medication you’re carrying. Your healthcare entitlements If you’re travelling to Switzerland or a country that’s part of the European Economic Area (EEA), apply for an EHIC (European Health Insurance) card which entitles you to healthcare equivalent to that provided for residents. Outside the EEA, medical care is usually dependent upon your insurance. Sun Protection Most people still aren’t careful enough about this. In hot sunny climates wear a hat and sunglasses, avoid midday sun, stay hydrated and apply high factor sun lotion regularly.

Why the Sewing Bee is Buzzing Louder Than Ever Kate McLelland Perhaps it’s all part of the cult of nostalgia we’re experiencing at the moment, including shabby chic, home baking and hand-made household accessories. Sewing is suddenly cool again, and that vintage Singer sewing machine that your mother banished to the garage all those years ago has recently returned to reclaim its place as a must-have item in UK homes. With TV programmes such as “The Great British Sewing Bee” commanding audiences of 2.7 million, it’s clear that sewing has once again captured the public’s imagination. Of course, the recent climate of austerity has played its part in this revival. Although shops selling ultra-cheap, disposable fashion have flooded the market with low quality, massproduced garments for many years now, customers are slowly beginning to realise that cut-price fashion can be a false economy. Making your own clothing is the answer to all

those concerns about quality and durability, plus there’s no better way to express your personality than to source your own fabrics, creating a fashion look that is unique to you. The old-style sewing machines mentioned at the beginning of this article are available to buy on Ebay, with prices ranging from £40 to £200 (for models incorporating a table). Alternatively you can purchase a new machine starting from around £200. As it’s difficult to predict exactly what you’ll want to make in the future, it’s best to start off with a brand that provides a basic model to which you can add accessories (allowing you to create ornate stitching or overlocking) over time. When you’ve bought your machine the next step will be to get hold of a simple pattern and some fabric. Purchasing fabric can be expensive and as you stand there, with your brand new sewing shears poised for action, you may wish that you had someone on hand to guide you through your first attempt at making up a garment. It’s always sensible to seek expert advice and in larger UK cities you’ll find plenty of courses available, priced from around £40 upwards. However, if you live in a rural area you may find it more difficult to locate a suitable class: www.thesewingdirectory.co.uk has a list of local classes and sewing groups which you can search by county. Sewing classes are a great place to pick up valuable tips, but not everyone can

afford to pay for lessons and sometimes learning at home is the only option. If you can’t get away you can always explore the many helpful, explanatory blogs and ‘how to’ videos for the beginner available on the internet, as these don’t cost anything and are almost as good as face-to-face tuition. One such blog can be found at www.tillyandthebuttons.com, with well illustrated, step-by-step tutorials on everything from ‘setting up your sewing machine’ to ‘inserting a jacket sleeve’. Once you’ve mastered some simple techniques you’ll be amazed at how quickly you progress. You’ll find that you save literally hundreds of pounds over time when you are no longer buying clothes at high street prices and parents will particularly appreciate the economic benefits of making outfits for their children. The sewing New! revival may have been driven by nostalgia for the ‘good old days’, but it’s underpinned by the growing realisation that skills in tailoring and making can be of real value to cash-strapped families today.

Brand, spanking, new...

Aberdeen Based Charity Future Choices had the best news lately, Apache Oil donated a brand new 17 seater disabled friendly bus. The Charity is Self funded and Voluntary run and helps provide social inclusion and recreational activities at Inchgarth Community Centre in Garthdee. The bus donation came after the Disabled Charity was featured in a National BBC2 Documentary last year called "Auction Hero", in which Presenter/Auctioneer Andrew Lamberty went all across Europe to buy and sell antiques, then donated the profits to the Charity. Representatives from Apache Oil saw the Documentary and were extremely impressed by the group’s work and dedication within the community and wanted to help their cause. The new bus has now given the charity a better chance of helping more disabled people, most of whom are stuck in their homes living with very little social life. David Forbes, Chairman of Future Choices described the news as "The turning point to the Charity, knowing Apache Oil has helped give us the tools to carry on with our hard work, it just means everything. So many people, especially those who just want out and have fun with friends, can now do that. Future Choices is there to help put those smiles and laughter back on the faces" The Charity is always looking for Volunteers to help out at their group. They meet on a Tuesday from 11-2 at Inchgarth Community Centre, if you want to become a volunteer or simply want to join the charity to meet new people, then contact David on 07821 700 046 or email info@future-choices.org.uk or visit their website at www.future-choices.org.uk

Teen View

Rangers as do many of the residents of the Western Isles.

Hi readers! I’m Tara; I thought this issue would be a great time to properly introduce myself as the writer of the teen view articles. So far I have written on the fast approaching Independence Referendum and the perspective of Aberdeen’s teenage population. I intend to explore other topics that affect teenagers specifically, throughout the upcoming issues and I hope they will be enjoyable to read.

In my spare time I enjoy playing piano and guitar, reading and baking. I have been baking for years, yet my decoration skills are not quite ‘Great British Bake-Off’ standard due to my lack of artistic ability, the sponge or dessert I am making always turns out well in the end and I have improved on cleaning up after myself much to my mum’s delight.

Firstly, some background knowledge on myself... I am from Aberdeen but my parents and the majority of my family are from the Outer Hebrides. Unfortunately my Gaelic vocabulary is very limited but I hope to self-teach myself online and with the help of family members. I like football to a reasonable extent and to the displeasure of many readers; I must confess I support

I have been part of the Debating Society for a couple of years now at school and its great fun. I enjoy going to the competitions and seeing the other societies throughout Aberdeen- there is always a guaranteed tense but exciting atmosphere, followed by a sigh of relief as the frantic research before the event is finally over. I would encourage everyone to take part

risk involved but nevertheless I would revisit them in future.

I would say I am quite reserved but I do love rollercoasters, however I am scared of heights which is a slight problem when I am faced with such rides as the ‘Galleon’(in Codonas). Often if I am with my family I have to go it alone. The rides that I have been on which I believe are relatively extreme are: ‘Ripsaw’ in Alton towers which involved being spun round while high up in the air (as shown in picture one). The second is the ‘Tower of Terror’ in Disneyland, Florida- you sit in a lift which randomly drops and rises by quite dramatic amounts. I did find these rides fantastic fun- probably due to the

I have to say I am a bit of a Geography fanatic- with an Atlas being in my top 10 favourite books. I find Geography really interesting from maps to volcanoes to rivers. I also hope to travel worldwide in the future to witness different cultures and observe well known attractions such as Niagara Falls and the Sydney Opera House. I hope I’ve provided you with a better insight as to who the writer is behind the teen view. I am eager to delve deeper into the upcoming topics and write them in an appealing format for the reader. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Bye/Tioraidh, Tara

The Alizonne Diet – what the heck is that! In an endeavour to find out exactly what the Alizonne diet was, I paid a visit to Temple Medical in West Craibstone Street, Aberdeen. Dr Sam Robson has been advertising with me for a very long time and 18 months ago invited me to come and try it out! I dismissed it as another fad. Well having seen the results on the back of the West End magazines for the last 18 months I decided that maybe this was the way forward. I don’t really know when I started to gain weight. I was always told, you’re tall, and you can carry it! Well it was back in April that I wasn’t feeling very good about myself so stepped on the scales, yet again, in an attempt to make me wake up and smell the coffee. And another stone, yes another 14 pounds of FAT had crept on. I tell you I didn’t even notice. Yes the clothes were feeling tighter and if I had a full length mirror I might have glanced and thought – bit chunky – but I don’t, probably for that very reason. Anyway, cutting to the chase I made an appointment to see Sam about advertising and thought I’ll enquire and find out more about Alizonne. After a tour of the new premises, very nice by the way, I was shown to the top of the building. Three flights of stairs; this is where the Alizonne treatments take place. No oxygen mask was to be seen at the top – just a fancy machine that looks like a hoover, a set of electronic scales, blood pressure monitor and some battery looking objects. Maybe this is why it’s called a medical diet. Back to ground level Sam got talking. The fact she had a pound of fat sitting on her desk which is not particularly attractive, her positive and enthusiastic way of talking about the amazing results that were happening on a daily basis, I knew at that point she had me! She said have a think about it and then phone and book an initial consultation if you are serious about the diet. She did say that I could be put off of the diet at any time if I didn’t follow it to the “T”. I wasn’t about to be the first to be kicked off – I’ll show you I can do it – however challenging it may become.

I am not going to lie and say it is only £5 a week and you step on some scales and told you’ve lost xyz pounds. It is not a cheap option. It does not involve surgery of any kind. It does involve a HUGE COMMITMENT. A slight re-arrangement of your social activities for the initial phase and a will of steel! You will require the ability to say NO, and to mean it. Alcohol has to be given up too… but you can still have tea and coffee J Armed with the telephone, I dialled the number – 01224 869997… Within five minutes I had an initial consultation and had parted with a chunk of money. My appointment wasn’t for another ten days… but I was determined I would start the way I meant to go on. Let the calorie counting begin… … I have actually now started the diet and have been on it for 14 weeks at the time of going to print. I am being complimented all the time in the weight loss, shrunk several dress sizes and feel pretty good about myself. I don’t want to say too much more in this article, but you can read my blog on the website as I have been keeping a diary. If you are interested and want to ask me about the diet, please feel free to get in touch, I’m more than happy to share my experience. My before, after and in between pictures I’ll share in the magazines when I’m complete. I am only at the end of Phase 1 and there are 7 more phases to go. Alizonne is changing my life. The weight loss is helping me live longer. The exercise is keeping me fit and active. The confidence in me has grown tenfold and I’m getting ready to embrace Phase 2.

http://www.gazettemagazines.com/blog-alizonne/ http://www.templemedical.co.uk/alizonne/ The top link will take you to my blog. The second link will take you to the temple medical web page and there are pictures and videos of people who have been on the diet and their results. I would just like to say that I embarked on the diet for my own health reasons. It will not be for everyone, but if you are serious about losing weight and have tried everything else then this might just work for you. Do not hesitate to get in touch with me to ask any questions. mail@gazettemagazines.com put in the subject line Alizonne and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. Words by Sue Simpson
