A Christmas wreath You know that Christmas is coming when you hang a festive wreath on your front door, says Katherine Sorrell. By Katherine Sorrell Zinc wreath candle holder, £22.95, Love from Rosie (07817 484698; www.lovefromrosie.co.uk)
Christmas is undoubtedly a time of traditions: perhaps midnight mass, roast turkey and the Queen’s Speech, followed by a snooze in front of the TV and a few board games. But some traditions are older than others. The custom of making wreaths goes all the way back to ancient Greece. It was here that wearing a laurel wreath came to represent status, achievement and victory. For the Romans, it was the supreme ruler who wore a wreath embellished with gold and jewels. Meanwhile, in Celtic Germany and Scandinavia, wreaths were employed for a different purpose: sun worship. In the long, dark days of winter people prayed for the onset of spring, and to give extra power to their prayers they used a wreath, hung from the roof or placed on an altar or a table. The wreath was woven with evergreens, a symbol of everlasting life, and decorated with candles, which represented the light of the sun. As Christianity spread through Europe, the pagan evergreen wreath was reinterpreted. Its circular shape stood for God’s eternity, the immortality of the soul and the everlasting life found in Christ. Evergreens, as before, symbolised eternal life,
4
while holly represented the crown of thorns. It is possible that using a wreath to count down the four weeks of advent became a Christian custom in 16th century Germany, and it is likely that the modern advent wreath was invented by a German pastor called Johann Hinrich Wichern. Asked by the children at his mission school how long it was until Christmas, Wichern took an old cartwheel and stuck 19 small candles into it as well as four large candles, then lit one small candle each weekday and one large candle every Sunday until Christmas arrived. Christmas wreaths are still a powerful symbol of celebration. For some families, Christmas starts with the making of a natural wreath using leaves, flowers and seed heads from the garden; for others, tinsel, glitter or ribbon provide a chance to experiment. But Christmas wreaths don’t have to be home-made: there are endless varieties of readymade styles, from traditional to modern, large or tiny, simple or extravagant. Whatever their style and wherever you display them, wreaths are a decorative essential for the Christmas season.
www.thegranitecitygazette.co.uk
t : 01224 949085
How to make your own Christmas wreath 1. If you don’t want to buy a readymade base, you can easily make your own. Either shape a wire coat hanger into a circle (keeping the hook for hanging) or use bundles of twiggy growth from your garden (willow or honeysuckle vine work well) bound firmly with garden string, raffia, florist wire or climber stems. 2. Attach evergreen sprigs such as conifer, holly, laurel or ivy. Bind them at the bottom, then overlap the next sprig or group of sprigs in the same direction. Keep going until the base is completely covered. 3. Finish as you like, choosing from a variety of interesting decorations, such as fresh, dried or artificial flowers, ribbons, berries, raffia, moss, fir cones, seed heads, nuts, dried fruit, poppy heads, tinsel, glitter, baubles, sweets, feathers, buttons and beads. 4. Attach a strong loop of wire or string and hang where you wish, or simply prop your wreath on a shelf or mantelpiece. e : gazette@fsmail.net

The Albyn Gallery The Albyn Gallery in Aberdeen’s West End plays host to over 100 pieces of art and brings the romantic works of Pino to the Disney character illustrations of Alison Leftcort to British art lovers. The collection belongs to the Douglas family who are opening their home to fellow collectors. Keith Douglas, Owner of the Albyn Gallery, said: “As a family, we love art and have amassed a fantastic collection. I believe that art collections should move and evolve and, aside from some particularly sentimental pieces, I look forward to sharing my collection with others and continuing to develop what we enjoy in our home.” The pieces include portraits of Hollywood legends Audrey Hepburn and Steve McQueen painted onto pieces of the original Hollywood sign by Bill Mack. There are also striking raised relief pieces of wall art by this internationally renowned artist. There are paintings by the ‘rock and roll star’ of the art world Michael Godard who is famed for his use of olives depicting party scenes. Dorit Levi’s work is bold and bright, often focusing on larger women. While Pino achieved career success illustrating covers of romantic novels, building the career of the famous model Fabio, and taking that romance into his pieces of art. Alison Leftcort’s Disney character illustrations have official approval from Disney and she was invited to paint a portrait of former American First Lady Hilary Clinton in her instantly recognisable style. There is also work by Armenian master Martiros Manoukian featuring striking colours and use of crushed semi-precious gems. There are even works by Picasso and Renoir (Junior), all are visible throughout the family home, as well as a collection in a top floor gallery room. Keith is a long-term supporter of charity Befriend a Child, and a proportion of each sale will go to this and other local charities.
Albyn Gallery offers Christmas Presents with a Difference for Art Lovers A new gallery which has opened in a West End home is offering exclusive art collections in the city. Albyn Gallery is introducing the works of globally renowned artists to the UK. With a diverse collection, there is a piece to suit every home, style and budget.
For little, and big, kids there are Alison Leftcort’s bold pop art Disney-approved character illustrations. For the film buff, Bill Mack’s portraits of entertainment legends on the original Hollywood sign offers an entirely unique piece of history. Michael Godard is perfect who like their art with a bit of rock and roll style. Romantics will fall in love with Pino’s watercolours. For some sparkle, Martiros Manoukian’s paintings are particularly striking. And bright colours and fun are in abundance in the works of Dorit Levi. least until the village quiz that evening.
In our village the festive season starts early - though not as early as in some shops. At the beginning of December two trees are set up and festooned with lights. Our Festive Fayre (I’m still not sure why it’s spelt that way) is timed to allow for the vagaries of Royal Mail, and is an event both communal and competitive. Alliances and feuds are renewed like wedding vows, with a mixture of enthusiasm and ceremony. Table spaces are as hotly contested as parking spaces, and as arbitrarily assigned by the committee. Stalls include a lot of handicrafts and self-sufficiency - woodturning, preserves, knitwear, cakes, beading and, of course, a profusion of plants and produce, which are silently - and sometimes not so silently critiqued by villagers and visitors taking a turn. Still, by the time the mulled wine and mince pies start to circulate, there’s a rosy glow of one kind or another and peace is restored - at

Method
Melt the butter in a saucepan then stir in the flour and mix with a wooden spoon to make a smooth paste. Cook over a low heat for 1 minute. Gradually whisk the milk a little at a time. Once all the milk has been added, cook over a low heat for a further 2-3 minutes, whisking continuously, until you have a smooth and thick sauce. Remove from the heat and cool for 5 minutes. Beat in the egg yolks, parsley and twothirds of the Cheddar and Stilton. Season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/ Gas Mark 4. Butter four large ramekin dishes and line the bases with circles of baking parchment.
Twice baked cheese souffles If the thought of baking a fragile cheese soufflé for a special dinner seems a little too ambitious, then think again. Baked once in advance then baked again just before serving, these delicious individual soufflés work every time. Makes 4 Ready in 1 hour 20 minutes
Ingredients: 40g butter, plus extra for greasing 40g plain flour 225ml milk, warmed 4 large eggs, separated 3 tbsp fresh chopped parsley 75g mature Cheddar cheese, grated 75g Stilton cheese, crumbled Salt and freshly ground black pepper 150ml double cream Green salad, to serve Cayenne pepper, to sprinkle (optional)

Place the egg whites in a clean, greasefree bowl and whisk until stiff. Beat one spoonful of the egg whites into the cheese sauce to loosen it slightly then gently fold the sauce into the remaining egg whites. Divide the mixture evenly between the prepared dishes. Place the dishes in a roasting tin and pour in boiling water to come halfway up the sides of the dishes. Bake for 20-25 minutes until risen and golden. Transfer the dishes to a cooling rack (the soufflés will sink a little but don’t worry). Increase the oven temperature to 200C/400F/Gas Mark 6. Turn the soufflés out into a shallow baking dish and remove the lining papers. Sprinkle over the remaining cheese and return to the oven for 15-20 minutes until piping hot and puffy. Spoon the cream over the top and bake for a further 2-3 minutes until heated through. Serve immediately with salad, sprinkled lightly with cayenne pepper, if liked.
t : 01224 949085
TIP : To prepare ahead, leave the
soufflés to cool after the initial baking, then turn them out into the baking dish and cover with cling film. Chill in the fridge for a few hours or overnight and top with the cheese and bake for the second time just before serving. e : gazette@fsmail.net

to build the fortress and redesign the medina. Further improvements followed and before long, this was Morocco’s most important port, the place where goods from the caravan trade could have access to the rest of the world. It became known as the ‘port of Timbuktu’. Trade dwindled over time but today, bastions and crenellations still mingle their golden reflections in the harbour where trawlers unload their catch and nets dry on the quay among screaming gulls, crates full of fish, shipwrights and a whole flotilla of little blue boats bobbing in the dazzling sun. From there it’s only a few steps to the al fresco restaurants serving royal mint tea and grilled sardines, couscous, lentil and tomato soup flavoured with ginger, cinnamon and pepper, or the ubiquitous tagine, a fragrant fish, meat or vegetable stew which simply melts in your mouth. Meanwhile, beyond the Sea gate, the old town beckons with bustling alleyways, mosques and holy shrines, stalls brimming with spices and fruit, rooftop restaurants and shaded squares and courtyards where cool fountains gurgle among potted plants. It’s a World Heritage Site and a feast for all the senses, echoing with the tapping and chiselling of artisans who carve ornaments from precious thuya wood. It’s also a great place to bargain for carpets and rugs, silver jewellery, brightly-painted pottery and Argan beauty products. Protected by UNESCO in south west Morocco, Argan trees yield the world’s rarest oil and the women’s cooperatives around Essaouira produce some of the most sought after natural cosmetics. Late afternoon is a lovely time to stroll along the bastions, still lined with 200 year old cannons. Enjoy the breeze, the glorious views over the town and harbour, the great sweep of the beach, the islands, the dramatic rocks to the north, battered by the waves, and the fabulous sunset, all red and gold, over the ocean. But hurry before the crowds arrive and just like the stars, you might see this little gem at its best, colourful, pristine and truly authentic.

Beauty Perfect Peepers - Eyelash Extensions If you want to enhance your eyes, fancy taking a few years off your age or maybe just want to make yourself look that extra bit special, then there is one beauty craze you really must try out - eyelash extensions. A favourite with celebrities everywhere and a must for anyone who wants a quick fix to looking gorgeous, eyelash extensions transform lashes from short and sparse to long and luscious in no time. They’re ideal for those all important occasions, like weddings and parties, where you not only want to look your best on the day, but look fabulous in the photos too. By adding shape and definition the extensions ‘open-up’ your peepers and leave you with pretty, seemingly lifted, youngerlooking eyes. Extensions are widely available in salons across the country and are specially applied by trained therapists. Remember, a consultation should be carried out prior to them being applied so that you can determine exactly what look you want to achieve. If you just want some subtle enhancement and a natural result
then try a half set of lashes. However, if you fancy making a statement, then try a full set for a striking finish. You can choose how long, thick and curly your lashes will be. The Application Each individual synthetic lash is carefully bonded to your own eyelashes - 80 to 100 individual lashes are usually applied. During the application your eyes will be closed and protected. You shouldn’t feel any pain or discomfort during this process whatsoever. The Results After you’ve had the lashes applied it is essential to not touch them or get them wet for a 24 hour period, as the glue will be still be setting. You shouldn’t need to wear mascara, but if you still want to, it’s worth investing in a water soluble product, designed for use with extensions - these mascaras are usually sold at salons

which offer the service. Remember to use a salon recommended oil free eye makeup remover too. Staying Power Eyelash extensions typically last between six and eight weeks. Because they are attached to your own lashes they will fall off as your natural lash grows out. On average you’ll lose about 12 or 15 lashes every two to three weeks - that’s why salons recommend returning for touch-ups when needed to maintain the desired look. They’ll charge a small fee for replacing what has been lost. What It Costs Prices vary from salon to salon, but on average eyelash extensions will set you back around £80 - £120 for a full set, or about £65 for a half set. Be Safe Always be sure that the staff at the salon you’ve chosen to use for your eyelash extensions are fully trained. Ask questions to gain an understanding of the therapist’s skill - they should be able to answer any questions you have about the treatment and after care. Your therapist should carry out a patch test 24 hours before your extensions to ensure that you have no adverse reaction to the glue. Your eyes are extremely delicate, and precious, so make sure you have the test before the treatment. This industry isn’t regulated, so if you have any doubts about a salon or therapist, it is a good idea to see if they are a member of The British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC). Being a member of BABTAC means that they are qualified to perform the treatment and insured in case anything goes amiss. BABTAC stickers are purple and usually found in the window of a salon. GHOST THE MUSICAL... Is coming to Aberdeen. Tickets would make a great Christmas gift for a relative who is a fan of the movie. The stage show is amazing. The technical side of things alone are worth the viewing. If this is the future of musicals then we have some very exciting times ahead. The cast do an amazing job of making you feel that you are part of the whole experience. Be prepared to feel like you too are travelling on the subway! Despite the movie having big names like Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and who can forget Whoopi Goldberg the young cast step into their shoes with ease. I will let you all know about my trip to Glasgow to see Ghost in the next issue. But do grab your tickets soon as they are selling FAST FAST FAST...

Entry fees are payable to COAST but fundraising proceeds from this event will be going to MND Scotland in memory of my dear friend, Mike Arnott. Mike passed away in Feb 2012 aged 46 from MND leaving behind his young wife Joy and 3 beautiful, young children. Mike’s friends and family are tirelessly raising funds and have already purchased their first Tobii Eye gaze machine which Mike had tried and is currently being used by an Aberdeen patient. Tobii helps people with disabilities to communicate and gain more independence. Mike’s family are well on their way to raising enough funds for a second machine again to be used in the North East.

Tell us three things we would never guess you’ve done? Well… I used to be in the Police. I was once a masseuse and I was school chess champion! What do you do in your spare time? I love going to the theatre and the cinema. I am fascinated with how films are made and would love to work behind the scenes. (Maybe see you one day directing your own football movie!)
A Coffee Break
What makes a good session for your football club?
with Alison McLeod When did you first become interested in football?
Happy smiling children at the end of the class, that has to top everything else.
I was 11 when I first took a visit to Pittodrie stadium to watch a friend playing for Cowdenbeath against Aberdeen. I was hooked. So hooked that I held an Aberdeen season ticket for about 20 years. My favourite footballer was Willie Miller and my football icon is Sir Alex Ferguson. I saw him once years ago in a shop in Cults but was too scared to speak to him! Aberdeen will always be my favourite team.
One final question – Has any child gone on to be a professional footballer? A few boys have gone on to play for Aberdeen U10 but, there is one boy who went on to be a professional player. His name is Jason Brown and he now plays for Inverness Caledonian. He is the most talented player I have ever had. Being a woman in a man’s world can be difficult. But as a female and a mother Alison is well equipped to relating well to her young footballers and the needs of their parents. Thank you for your time Alison and here’s to another good term of football fun.
Alison McLeod
What is your most memorable match? That has to be Bayern Munich v Dons in 1983 in the Cup Winners Cup. It was the best match I have ever seen at Pittodrie. We won! 3-2. Aberdeen then went on to win the cup in Gothenburg that year. Were you a member of a ladies football team at all?

Fruit Planting The garden may be quieter than usual at this time of year, and certainly not likely to be yielding vast quantities of crops, but this near dormant time is perfect for planting fruit. by Pippa Greenwood You can grow fruit trees in surprisingly small spaces, training them to espaliers (so that they have several sets of horizontal arms), cordons (as single main stems grown at an angle), fans (with their branches trained in to a fan shape) or as step-overs, (trained so that they make a neat edging for a bed or border about 45cm or so above ground level). You could also use a fruit tree to create a decorative and later a wonderfully productive arch. At this time of year fruit trees are great value because they are sold ‘bare root’, lifted from a field and not container grown. I find these establish particularly well and because you usually obtain them from a specialist supplier or nursery, the range of varieties available is second to none. You can either buy one year old ‘maidens’ and train these yourself, or if you want to save time, you can often buy trained or part trained forms. When you are choosing fruit trees it’s essential to get them on the right rootstock as this determines the ultimate size and vigour of the tree. Apples are particularly complicated,
but as a rule, for step-overs, cordons, dwarf bushes and trees in containers try the extremely dwarfing but somewhat tricky M27 - but beware weak varieties or any tree grown on this rootstock in a poor soil as it may well fail. For bush, cordon, espaliers and half-standard try the easier to look after dwarfing rootstock M26 and for a cordon or espalier on a poor soil, for arches and for bush trees try the semi-dwarfing MM106. You will need to choose the varieties you grow so that they can pollinate each other (if there is no suitable pollinator in the vicinity you will not get fruit) and on the basis of the taste and texture of the fruit and how well it stores and so forth. If you have space, it is good to grow apples for cooking as well as eating, or look out for those described as ‘dual purpose’, meaning they make very passable cookers as well as dessert apples. As well as tree fruits such as apples, pears and maybe even a medlar or a plum or gorgeous gage, you could also consider some delicious bush fruits. The great thing about these

is that they take up even less space and again can often be trained into wacky shapes such as fan-trained or standard bushes, making them all the more ornamental and easier to fit into the smaller garden. Then there are raspberries on my rather heavy and very alkaline soil I tend to stick to the autumn fruiting varieties such as Autumn Bliss and Joan J, but on freer draining and acidic soils you can try some of the more numerous summer fruiters too. Bare root fruit trees, bushes and canes are generally available from about November through until early March, depending on the weather, so don’t delay, start ordering or better still, planting, today.
