Well again another busy six weeks has zoomed past!

I’ve launched another magazine! Kingswells Community News is now under the gazette banner.

The first one hit the streets at the beginning of June.

Like a proud mother I sent it off through the doors and hopefully it will be well received 

way to showcase some home-grown talent. So we have a model, a stylist, a make-up artist and the photographer and off they went to the Duthie Park for a tea party! I know the fashion will not be for all but I hope you enjoy reading a little about the individuals that took part.

There are a few summer camps for you to consider.

There are activities at the Aberdeen Christian Fellowship in Union Grove. Alison McLeod After School Football still has places in the Kingswells holiday camps – Airyhall already fully booked. Ace Football run classes at The International School and are keen to let you know it is open to all!

Cutting it fine for distribution but worthy of a mention is The Gordon Highlander’s Quiz night.

It is on 21 June so sorry to those that get their magazines after that date. If you are out and about why not try a vintage tea at the Dee’s Tea’s in Kincardine O Neil or Circles have launched another shop at Paul Lawrie at Ardoe.

The University and The Rowett Research Institute are always looking for niche groups of people and have approached the gazette to help them find volunteers for three of their new projects. All is explained within each individual article and there is even the chance of some M&S Vouchers! Now there’s an incentive to get you phoning.

I think I’ve told you enough, so why not go and refill your cuppa and enjoy the rest of the magazine.

The cupboards at 62 Summer Street are worryingly bare.

The address is that of Aberdeen Cyrenians, the charity which aims to meet the needs of people who are homeless, at risk of homelessness or affected by homelessness in any way. Part of that mission is to supply food parcels to those in need and right now 200 food parcels are handed out every month, hence the ongoing need for donations • Tins of soup • Tins of beans • Tins of custard • Tins of fruit • Packets of rice or pasta • Jars of pasta sauce • Tins of vegetables, including potatoes & kidney beans • Packets of instant soup • Teabags • Cereal • Tins of fish • Tins of meat • Tinned meals such as Irish stew Every donation is recorded and stored by date – there are cupboards labelled 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and yes, even 2017 - and the parcels are made up of the foods with the closest useby dates. A small army of volunteers sort all donations, not just food but toiletries, clothes and bedding.

Aberdeen Cyrenians advice and information workers have to sanction each food parcel.

Amongst their other responsibilities is running a dropin advice service four afternoons a week where anyone can go for advice about budgeting, accessing welfare benefit or transition into or from employment and with assistance in the management of arrears, debt or household budgets.

Aberdeen Cyrenians has come a long way since it began in 1968 with a soup kitchen run in the city's Castlegate organised by students from Aberdeen University. Over the next four decades an estimated 50,000 homeless people or people at risk of homelessness have been supported by Aberdeen Cyrenians.

MBC Festival Art Exhibition 2013 The MBC Festival Art Exhibition this year will be held on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 August.

Artists living, working or attending a class or church in Cults, Bieldside or Milltimber are invited to submit work for this event, which will be held in the Phoenix Centre at Newton Dee Village in Bieldside.

Information about the range of artwork and conditions for exhibiting will be available at the end of June. UNION SQUARE LENDS A HAND TO TIVOLI

Tasks for volunteers included painting the old ticket box, which had previously not been painted since the 1930’s; cleaning up the ‘Rank Strand Grandmaster’, the vintage piece of equipment last used in 1966 to control all of the lighting in the theatre; and taking down a lighting rig for restoration,

The volunteer day is part of Hammerson’s UK-wide annual Community Day. Hammerson is the company that owns Union Square and over 200 employees from across the business participated in similar events around the UK, working on 15 different projects and donating 1,500 hours of their time.

“The group was the first to walk on the theatre’s stage since 1966. This is a hugely exciting project to be a part of and it was a great day both for the team here and for the volunteers.”

The Tivoli Theatre, which dates back to 1872, was known as the ‘Theatre of Variety’ and in its heyday would be packed twice a day with up to 1600 people. Great acts which have performed over the years include Julie Andrews, who gave one of her very first performances at the theatre, Sir Jimmy Shand MBE the Scottish musician who played traditional Scottish dance music on the accordion, W. C. Fields, the American comedian, actor, juggler and writer, George Formby, the British comedy singer-songwriter and ukulele player and Tony Hancock the British comedian and actor.

Union Square has had front row seats for the Tivoli’s amazing face lift and we have taken a huge interest in the theatre’s development. We are very excited to have played a part in this fantastic refurbishment project. We did our best to work

Mr Green in the Conservatory A leaky, uninsulated porch is a friend to no one. But a demolished porch replaced by a mini-conservatory = firewood + bricks + glass for cold frames + indoor space for more plants (especially welcome since our greenhouse had to go).

“So what do you think?” Anne pointed to her makeshift plan on the kitchen table.

I thought we could fit at least a dozen plants on the shelves, plus five trays of seedlings on the floor, and still be able to sit down.

That humble pencil and paper outline was the beginning, but it was a long and fretful journey to the finished conservatory. Low points included our builders doing a twoweek vanishing act, them breaking the lid on our chiminea on the first day, and failing to put up 90-degree angle walls - twice. The wood and glass conservatory, however, was - and is - spectacular. Mind you, someone else supplied it. And, once the floor was tiled and those tantalising shelves were slated, we were ready to go.

The cat was the first visitor to the conservatory and, to be honest, didn’t seem that impressed (although she didn’t know how much we’d borrowed to pay for it).

Operation Hothouse went into action. We started with surprise tomato plants - in that they turned out to be a yellow variety - swiftly followed by Fasold green beans and Kennedy mange tout. The results were impressive, but top billing went to the California Wonder sweet peppers. Never having grown them before, I erred on the side of excess and planted 16. The 12 that thrived also gave us ample camouflage from walkers who passed up the lane.

As the peppers grew - and believe me, they grew a lot - we harvested, swapped and even froze a few (depipped and sliced first). And

still they kept coming. On rare, hot days, the room smelt like a sweet pepper sauna.

I became so convinced of the conservatory’s powers that I brought in the sweet potato plant, which was ailing. It rallied a little, but when it came to harvest time I felt that the label’s bumper crop guaranteed had overstated the case. Seven sweet potatoes might be good for one plant, but not if they’re all the size of a 20p piece.

Naturally, we need to water everything regularly and employ judicious temperature control with the windows. Which also means that flies and wasps are frequent visitors. But hey, that’s nature for you. And it’s a dinner guest or two for the spiders, which moved in almost immediately.

Going forward, we want to reduce volume and increase variety (because even homegrown peppers can become a little samey).

Chilli peppers are next - I’d love to grow Bhut Jolokia - reputed to be the world’s hottest chillies. Anne is a tomatophile (I like the plants, but can’t stand the taste of the fruit), so we’ll definitely look a mixture of plentiful and interesting.

The conservatory has already been nursemaid to a range of herbs and seedlings.

It’s not only an extension of the house, but also an extension of our lifestyle. Anne would like more space to sit down in comfort. Or, at the very least, be able to find the cat among the indoor undergrowth.

Bring me Sunshine

Add extra space, make the most of precious sunshine and bring the garden into your house. Katherine Sorrell looks at what you should consider when planning to build a conservatory.

Kit or bespoke?

Kits tend to be cheap and DIY-friendly, as most of the parts (usually a PVCu frame and polycarbonate roofing) are pre-cut and pre-drilled ready for installation. If you choose a bespoke design you’ll pay a great deal more, but you’ll have something tailored to your

individual requirements.

Remember that unless a conservatory is well finished and appropriate to your property, it may detract from rather than add to its value.

Size, siting and aspect A simple plant room or occasional-use home office can be squeezed into quite a small space, but for a useable room such as a sitting room, dining room or playroom, allow at least eight to ten metres of floor area. Overall, ensure that the proportions of your conservatory suit how you’re going to live in it and complement your property and garden.

and will you have to avoid obstructions such as trees or outbuildings? If possible, try to place it facing east or west, as north-facing conservatories tend to be cold, while south-facing ones can overheat.

Walls and frames Traditionally, conservatories are built onto a 600mm high ‘dwarf’ wall made of brick or stone, in a colour and style that matches or complements that of the main house. The most popular choice for the wall framework is PVCu, a material that is light, strong, requires little maintenance and is often made to stock lengths so it can be system-built quickly and easily. It isn’t an environmentally friendly choice, however, and its modern look can be inappropriate for a period property. Bespoke conservatories are generally made in hardwood, which can be carved into slender, intricate designs and suits older properties, though it is more expensive and requires regular maintenance.

Heating is essential if you plan to use your conservatory in winter and, to comply with building regulations, it must be independent from your main system. You may wish to place radiators against the dwarf walls or install under-floor heating, either of the warm-water pipe or electric cable variety, or you may consider electric trench heaters, hidden under grilles around the edges of the floor. Where there’s room for a chimney or flue it is perfectly possible to install an open fire on the wall that was the outside of the original house.

Ventilation In the height of summer you’ll need to be able to provide a cool waft of air in your conservatory. Roof vents may be opened manually (with long-armed winding gear) or electrically, or may even be thermostatically

Glazing Double or triple glazing is essential to reduce heat loss from a conservatory at any time other than mid-summer. The best glazing combines a low-emissivity coating that reflects heat back inside, and argongas filled units for maximum insulation. In a bespoke conservatory, you can specify tinted, etched, obscured, anti-sun, fireresistant, self-cleaning or other specialist glass at a price. For roofs, choose from glass or polycarbonate panels. The latter are light and strong, cheap, and quick and easy to fit, but tend to obscure light, particularly at thicknesses that achieve the same thermal performance as double glazing. Near trees, they may also suffer from algae growth.

Shading Not just necessary for privacy, blinds also provide shade from direct sunlight and reduce the build-up of heat. If the latter is a problem, your best bet is solar-reflective roller blinds. Otherwise, the options include pleated fabric, pinoleum Roman blinds and slatted Venetian blinds. The blinds you choose will have an enormous impact on the style of the room as a whole, so take your time choosing a look that’s right for you. Remember to ask how easy it is to clean your chosen blinds, and consider whether you want to open and close them with pullcords, rods or via remote control.

FAMILY Whether for dining, playing or simply relaxing, make your garden a fun and functional place for all the family.

From the smallest to the largest outdoor area, it’s possible to create a beautiful, useable space that children and adults alike will enjoy.

First, consider how you can really make the most of your garden. Perhaps you could paint an unattractive fence, trim back some overhanging branches or extend an area of paving? Can you create a tucked-away area for making dens, or would you like an adults-only seating area away from noisy games? Should that greenhouse really be next

to the lawn where the kids play football? And can you install lighting to highlight interesting features and guide you in the dark?

Next, consider furniture. For relaxation, try a hammock, sun lounger, outdoor mattress or steamer chair. For eating, outdoor dining tables and chairs vary hugely in price, but solid, more durable types are usually an investment worth making. Styles range from metal to funky coloured plastic to classic wood and remember that you scour boot sales and second-hand shops for cheap and cheerful pieces that can be painted. Remember that garden furniture should be

stored away when not in use, so consider the size of the furniture for your shed.

Cover your table with anything from a practical oilcloth to a pretty embroidered tablecloth. An informal collection of crockery and glass, in varied but co-ordinating colours, looks fantastic and try plastic, metal or even paper plates, bowls and tumblers for younger children. The finishing touches are colourful bunting, fairy lights or strings of lanterns, tea lights or decorative candles.

You should provide some shaded areas, especially for eating and playing. Permanent

GARDENS shading might take the form of a gazebo, arbour or similar, or simply a fabric awning fixed to hooks in walls or trees. Alternatively, a parasol or garden umbrella is an inexpensive option.

Finally, it’s playtime. From paddling pools to trampolines, croquet sets to giant games of snakes and ladders, there are all sorts of enteraining toys.

Simple things as a ball, a swing (hung from a strong branch) or a skipping rope will also provide hours of fun.

By now your garden planning should have paid off and, with everyone happily fed and the

children entertained, it’s time to make a cup of tea, pop on a sunhat and head out for that well-earned snooze in a deckchair.

BOX: Plants for family gardens Choose tough plants that are easy to look after and safe for children: avoid fragile blooms, thorns, plants that can cause skin irritations or are poisonous. A good backbone of easy-care shrubs will provide structure, then add a few perennials for both colour and fragrance. Burn, baby, burn The best tools for a great British barbecue What better way to celebrate the good weather than to go outside and burn things?

Barbecue season is back, and as ever there are all kinds of gadgets promising to make cooking in the great outdoors even greater.

If you don’t already have a barbecue you’re spoilt for choice: you can spend as little as £20 on a charcoal kettle barbecue, or as much as £5,999 on a “Grill Centre” that’s bigger than most people’s kitchens. If space is at a premium, it’s worth considering a portable one, such as Weber’s clever little Smokey Joe barbecue (£59.99) or one of its many imitators.

Wherever men are showing off you’ll find firms offering gadgets to help them, and in outdoor cooking there are clever ideas such as the Grill Daddy Pro brush (about £14.99), which combines a typical grill brush with

a steam cleaner to help shift tough burnt-on food and sterilise the grill racks.

Alternatively, a quick scan of eBay uncovers plenty of motorised grill brushes for around £15 that promise to take the effort out of cleaning. If that isn’t manly enough, the terribly-named Looftlighter (£69.95) is a guaranteed hit, blasting hot air out of the nozzle at a terrifyingly hot 680 degrees to light barbecues, fires and anything else that happens to be nearby.

It sounds like a daft idea but it really does work - as does the digital thermometer fork (from £16), which can help you avoid poisoning all your friends by telling you whether the meat is cooked through or if it needs a bit longer.

Bugs and beasties are

really thriving in this warmer weather, so just how should you deal with the most common problems you are likely to encounter at this time of year?

Aphids

Caterpillars

Greenfly and blackfly, also known as aphids, can be a real menace as they suck sap from your plants and can transmit viruses at the same time. Aphids breed incredibly rapidly, so regular control is necessary.

Caterpillars come in all shapes, sizes and colours, but can do a lot of damage as they munch their way through your plants and perhaps even into your vegetables.

• Check plants regularly and either spray with a suitable insecticide or a soap or plant oil based insecticide

• Hand pick the pest where possible and either squash or place on the bird table. They’re easiest to spot at dusk or very early in the morning.

• Use biological controls – they’re totally safe for all other creatures and of course leave no residues • Use a strong jet of water to blast the aphids off plants, but do a thorough job or else they will soon be back up and causing damage

Woodlice Woodlice often cause a lot of concern, however these little creatures are rarely responsible as they simply do not have adequately strong mouthparts. They can cause damage to soft new growth or occasionally to soft-fleshed fruits such as strawberries but can’t tackle tougher plant growth. You may see them at the ‘scene of the crime’ and presume that they have caused the initial damage but they have probably moved in to clean up a lot of the debris created by other creatures.

Earwigs Earwigs can cause quite a bit of damage, particularly on the flowers of plants such as clematis and dahlias, where they nibble out large quantities of petal or occasionally leaf. Try trapping them using an inverted flowerpot on top of a bamboo cane. The bamboo cane and pot should be positioned amongst susceptible plants and the pot needs to be stuffed loosely full of hay, straw or similar material. The earwigs climb in there to hide and the pots can them simply be emptied out on a regular basis.

Mildew Powdery mildew is also a problem at this time of year; it coats plant leaves, stems, buds and sometimes even petals with a white flowery deposit. Sometimes the mildew can also prevent fruits from swelling normally, cause the leaves to become distorted and even fall early.

With the British summer finally here it’s not just us embracing the warmer weather as we peel our winter layers off and take our arms and legs out of hibernation, summer bugs will also make their untimely appearance.

• Essential oils such as Tea Tree Oil and Lavender Oil (dabbed on neat) can be a useful addition to your first aid kit and provide on-the-spot relief as well as helping reduce the risk of infection.

Over the past couple of years wet and warm summers have resulted in an explosion in mosquito and flea populations, which can only mean one thing – bites and more bites.

You’d like to think you would take it as a compliment that insects think you’re tasty enough to feast on, but it’s not much fun when you’re left with burning, red, swollen and itchy marks - not to mention the pain from stinging nettles after balmy walks in the countryside and picnics in the park.

On-the-spot treatments There are some simple ways you can help relieve any discomfort if you’ve been bitten or stung: wash the area with soap and water, use a cold compress or an ice pack (a bag of frozen peas will do the trick) and try not to scratch to prevent infection.

You can also use a spray or cream that contains local anaesthetic, antihistamine or mild hydrocortisone to prevent itching and swelling, or take an antihistamine tablet (check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or worried about drowsiness or allergies to medication).

Alternative remedies •

For stinging nettle rashes rub the affected area with dock leaves for some instant relief – they are normally found growing near nettles.

Homeopathy is often used to treat bites and stings. For example, Apis and Ledum can help reducing swelling and relieve aching pains.

You can also add any of the following oils to a bite and sting lotion or cream: Burdock, Plaintain, Echinacea, Feverfew, Nettle, Yellow Doc and St John’s Wort.

• Some oils can be used as a preventative by putting them in a lotion or water spray and applying to the skin. For example, Lavender, Rosemary,Tea Tree or Citronella.

Always seek medical advice if you have wheezing, difficulty breathing or swallowing, excess swelling around the bite or sting, or flu-like symptoms that appear to become worse rather than better.

If you’ve previously had a severe reaction you will normally be offered an adrenaline pen or be referred to an allergy clinic for further investigations.

The longest holiday Most of us shy away from considering our later years and what they might bring. There may be the joy of watching our family grow and develop with grandchildren, great nephews and nieces, but understandably we do not like the idea of becoming incapacitated.

However, we should start thinking about what can be termed as the “longest holiday” of our lives sooner rather than later, as it is now clear that the government will not be funding the ongoing costs of any care that might be required.

3. Realistically consider what your ISAs and other savings might be worth. Monitor your investments regularly with a professional adviser.

The reason for the government’s stance becomes clear when examining some of the facts.

According to statistics from the Office for National Statistics, the average percentage of people over 65 in 1992 was 15.8%. By the year 2033, estimates show that this figure will have increased to 22.9%.

As the state is not going to assist in any meaningful form regarding ongoing care needs, we need to consider the cost of buying care as this is also rising. For example, maintaining professional quality care in one’s own home is now running at around £13.68 per hour.

Furthermore, full time basic fees in a care home now average at just over £27,000 a year rising to over £38,000 for nursing home fees.

1. Check your pensions, ensuring that you have current information for all of them.

Complete a BR19 form and send it off for a State Pension assessment. The reason for this, particularly for women, is that it will be assumed that your NI contributions would have continued if you had not stopped work in order to care for your children. However, the benefits agencies will not know of this and your past

Think about when your mortgage will be repaid, along with any other commitments. Put income that you have released, when loans are repaid, towards ISAs and pensions for your future.

5. Start thinking of your house as a commodity that might have to be used to fund care needs in the future.

6. Consider a special form of trust to ring fence the equity of your house. This can protect your home from local authority means testing when you qualify for care.

7. Review your Wills and the position regarding inheritance tax.

8. Review whether any property you own are as Tenants In Common or under Joint Tenancy as this is important in this arena of planning (Scottish law varies in this regard).

9. Seek independent financial advice from an appropriately qualified professional, and appoint an adviser on a fee basis to advise you.

The facts before us may not be favourable and planning for our longest holiday may take many years to achieve. Although our finances might be under pressure at this time, doing something now is going to be better than doing nothing.

Muscle Function in Older People Unfortunately ageing is an inevitable process which has many upsides and downsides. One consequence of getting older is that muscle mass is lost at a rate of about 1% per year after reaching around 45-50 years old. This may sound inconsequential but in fact this loss of muscle mass (termed sarcopenia) reduces ones abilities to perform simple tasks, such as rising from a chair or stepping on to a bus, and has also been reported to reduce quality of life. One way that is known to help in the maintenance of muscle mass and function is through exercise, although unfortunately older people do not respond as well as younger counterparts.

At the University of Aberdeen we have found that the consumption of fish oil may act to improve older people’s responses to exercise,

allowing them to increase their muscle strength to a similar degree as younger individuals. We are currently carrying out a larger scale study to confirm these early findings and are looking for volunteers over the age of 65 to participate. The study involves twice weekly exercise sessions which take place at Foresterhill for an 18 week period combined with either supplementation with fish oil or placebo. We will measure muscle mass and function before and after the intervention and take a small blood sample to monitor other potential health benefits of fish oil.

If we can confirm the fish oil has a beneficial effect on the responses to exercise then this would provide a strategy that can be readily employed to reduce the incidence and burden of age related loss of muscle mass and function.

As we are living in a, so called, “ageing society”, then this kind of information will be of the utmost importance and crucial to the overall health of the population.

Volunteers Wanted PROJECT TITLE: Fish oil and muscle function in older people We are looking for women and men over the age of 65 years of age to participate in the above study.

The study will last for 18 weeks with exercise sessions two times a week.

We will monitor changes in markers of health and the adaptive response to exercise.

Overall we aim to determine whether fish oil consumption can enhance the health improving effects of exercise.

New Range Rover Sport: The detail

It was a case of double-oh-heaven for Land Rover at the New York Motor Show as it managed to steal the limelight for the launch of its new Range Rover Sport thanks to a rather special unveiling by none other than Daniel Craig. The Bond star helped the British manufacturer deliver the first car to the press launch in a live drive through the streets of Manhattan. The $1 million stunt saw sections of the city closed at rush hour and it had all the razzamatazz of the Oscars.

One of Land Rover’s most important models, the Sport has notched up nearly 304,000 worldwide sales since it arrived in 2005. Now, following the successful births of the Evoque and Range Rover, it’s the racy middle brother’s time to shine.

Based on the same aluminium platform as the Range Rover, but with 75 per cent of the parts changed, the Sport ushers in an Evoque-esque look, clever new technology, and some seriously impressive statistics.

Powering the top-of-the-range model is a 5.0-litre supercharged V8, producing 503bhp and 625Nm of torque. With a tuned exhaust system, it sounds incredible as it powers its way to 60mph in five seconds.

The popular SDV8 diesel unit also makes a welcome return. With 332bhp and a mighty 700Nm of torque, it can crack 60mph in 6.5 seconds. There are further diesel and petrol units to pick from, but of more interest is the hybrid which is set to arrive later this year and combines a 3.0-litre diesel engine with a 50kw battery, a big leap forward for the model.

Improvements have been made across the board. The new Sport is 33% lighter than its predecessor (that’s the weight of six average adults), the body is 25% stiffer and on average it’s 24% more efficient.

Clever new technology on the Range Rover Sport includes an iPhone and Android app that lets you connect with their car. It can guide you back to where you parked it, tell you how much fuel is left, file company car mileages via email and even alert you if it thinks it’s about to be nicked. The clever kit includes in-car wifi for up to eight devices, a tracking system to aid recovery and the ability to dial emergency services in the event of a crash and alert them of your location.

A camera on the front of the car reads road signs as you pass them, displaying speed limits and over-taking restrictions on the dash. There’s also a head-up display that shows speed and navigation instructions.

Parking scrapes can also be avoided with a warning system that tells you if a car is coming while reversing out of a bay and an alarm can tell you if you’re wading too deep in the water (a dip into anything over 850mm could result in big bills).

Larger families will be pleased to hear there’s now a seven-seat option too. The seats are only really for kids, but electrically rise and lower from the flat floor. The tailgate gets power while the doors now have a soft-close option.

Inside, the designers have worked hard to make it even more luxurious, with more metal on show and a higher, wraparound dash. The centre console is even chilled and fits a full bottle of champagne in it. There’s a 23-speaker stereo system and rear seat entertainment options too.

Pricing, as you’d expect, is rather premium. The top-of-the-range supercharged V8 costs £81,550 with entry level models a “more affordable” £51,550. Time to visit the bank manager…because this is one highly desirable car.

You can buy them ready-made in most supermarkets or deli’s but they are really easy to make at home with just a can of chick peas and a few store cupboard ingredients. For an on-the-go salad pack into warmed pitta breads.

Serves 4 Ready in 30 minutes

Method

1 To make the falafel, place the chick peas, garlic, parsley or coriander, spices and flour in a food processor and season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Process for about 1 minute until you have a fairly smooth mixture. Turn into a bowl then divide and shape the mixture into 12 small patties with clean wetted hands.

2 Shallow fry the patties in hot oil for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper.

3 Meanwhile, place the sliced peppers on a foil-lined grill pan and drizzle over the olive oil. Grill for 3-4 minutes on each side until tender and lightly charred in places.

4 Toss together the salad leaves and shredded iceberg lettuce. Arrange on four plates with the grilled peppers.

Halve the hot falafel then add to the salad and top with roughly crumbled goats’ cheese.

5 To make the dressing, place all the ingredients in a screw-topped jar and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Pour the dressing over the salad and serve immediately.Tip : Serve simply with a fresh tomato

salad made by thickly slicing ripe vine tomatoes and layering with finely chopped spring onions and a few fresh basil leaves. Drizzle with a little olive oil and season with freshly ground black pepper.

Let’s Go Fly a Kite

By Catherine Ryan If you’re looking for a fun, easy and inexpensive hobby this summer, why not consider kite flying?

Not only will it mean that you’ll be spending more time outdoors in the sunshine, it’s a great way to meet new people as there are at least a dozen kite festivals a month in the summer all over the country (www.kitecalendar.co.uk).

We have two Chinese philosophers to thank for the invention of the kite more than 2000 years ago, who used readily available silk and bamboo, although if legend suggests that a Chinese farmer beat them to it by tying a string to his hat to keep it from blowing away.

The first kites were generally rectangular and flat rather than bowed and were often decorated with symbols and pictures as well as whistles and strings.

They had a number of uses including communication in military operations as well as testing wind speeds, measuring distances and even lifting men. Kite flying was then spread to Japan by Buddhist monks, onto India where they were used as ‘fighter kites’ in specific festivals and to Polynesia, by this time made from cloth and wood and used in religious ceremonies.

It was the famous traveller of the 13th century, Marco Polo, who first brought stories of kites to Europe but it wasn’t for another 300 years that kites were regularly brought back by sailors,

returning from Japan and Malaysia.

Eventually, scientists and researchers began to realise their potential for experiments – Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Wilson and Thomas-François Dalibard used kites to learn more about wind and the weather whilst Alexander Graham Bell and the Wright Brothers used them to aid in the development of aeroplanes. In World I and II, kites were used for observation and signalling. Nowadays, their use is mainly recreational. Kites are stronger, lighter and more colourfully decorated than ever before.

So, how do you become an expert kite flyer?

1) Learn the best wind conditions most experienced fliers suggest between 5 – 25 miles per hour which means plants and leaves will be moving but not blowing about furiously. A flag or windsock is a useful guide.

2) Find a clear, open area such as a field or park – the bigger the space, the more line you can let out and the more fun you’ll have moving your kite across the sky. Make sure that you stay away from roads, power lines and airports and never fly in rain or lightning.

3) Lay out the kite and lines on the ground before you start - check all connectors and bridles and make sure there are no knots or tangles. Ensure you have around 20 to 35 metres of line and that they’re the same length on both sides.

4) Launch by stepping backwards and pulling both handles to your side and control the kite by pulling the lines – left will make the stunter turn left and vice versa, whilst holding them even will fly straight.

5) Be careful of other people – if you do tangle lines, walk slowly with the other flier to slide the tangle down the line of the kite where it can be more easily unwrapped.

You can spend as little as a few pounds on a kite or if the budget allows, as much as a couple of hundred. Who knows?

With a little practice, you might develop a new talent this summer.

as Bernard Shaw’s triumphant comic play Pygmalion. Oliver Twist Charles Dickens Fagin told his boys they ‘gotta pick a pocket or two’ and composer Lionel Bart picked more than

an idea or two from Dickens, transposing the Victorian London of Oliver Twist to the stage, along with the wonderful characters of Twist himself, lovable rogue The Artful Dodger and simply terrifying thug, Bill Sykes. Dickens’ novel opens with Twist enduring life in the workhouse before being taken on by an undertaker. He escapes, only to fall in with Fagin’s gang of pickpockets. The book’s a lot darker than the musical with the brutality of the streets along with the poverty and drudgery of many of London’s lower classes portrayed vividly.

Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West Gregory Maguire Written in 1995, Maguire’s novel is set in the land of Oz, way before Dorothy and Toto follow the yellow brick road. Elphaba is a girl who was born green, with sharp teeth and a disagreeable temperament. In Maguire’s vision, Oz is imaginatively recreated, with all its Technicolor splendour practically seeping from the page.

It is the Lajee Center Cultural Tour, (from the Aida Refugee Camp in Palestine) who are embarking on an arts and cultural tour this June (Scotland and Ireland) and they will be in Aberdeen on International Refugee Day on June 20th 2013.

They will be putting on a performance at Queens Cross Church on that day, doors open 7pm, with a suggested donation of £5.

EXHIBITION 2013 The MBC Festival Art Exhibition this year will be held on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 August.

Artists living, working or attending a class or church in Cults, Bieldside or Milltimber are invited to submit work for this event, which will be held in the Phoenix Centre at Newton Dee Village in Bieldside.

Information about the range of artwork and conditions for exhibiting will be available at the end of June. All artists should obtain a copy of this information, as it will include dates and times for handing in artwork and any other necessary updates or changes. It will be available at Cults Post Office, Cults Library or the Blue Door Charity shop in Bieldside. Westhill Podiatry Practice was officially opened by boxer Lee McAllister the Aberdeen Assassin on Friday 31th May 2013. Lee’s new company A-Team Property Maintenance and Construction Ltd fitted out the interior of the clinic.

This new venture is a dynamic multidisciplinary clinic that offers a wide range of private health services. As well as a podiatry/chiropody there will be a dietician, a physiotherapist, a massage therapist and a chiropractor all under one roof, providing one centre for care. The practice is located at a prime location in the Westhill Shopping Centre which offers free parking.

The podiatry/chiropody practice itself offers a full range of treatments; both routine and preventative care, biomechanical evaluation, sports injuries, in-growing toe nail treatment, verruca and diabetic foot care.

Tracey White decided to undertake this venture after realising that there was no private provision of a service like this in Westhill. Tracey said ‘Local people used to have to travel into the Aberdeen City centre or further for treatments, now Westhill has a high quality local option where patients can combine their treatments and shopping’ The clinic is still looking for other therapists to join this exciting new venture, if anyone is interested they can contact Tracey on 01224 740885

The North East Open Studios (NEOS) NEOS is an award winning collective of artists, makers and galleries based in the North East of Scotland, formed in 2003 to help the public access the wealth of creative talent throughout the area, winning the Northern Lights Tourism Award 2007 for best Aberdeenshire Tourism Initiative.

The open studios is run on voluntary grounds as a community organisation and serves to engage wider audiences in all aspects of art; to grow small-scale art and craft business in the north east of Scotland and to provide a cohesive network of professional artists and makers.
