We couldn’t really ask for any more, could we?

As long as you made the most of it, then that’s ok.

I’ve had a very busy month. My daughter was off on a school trip to France, so I nipped down to Edinburgh to visit some friends. I indulged myself with lunch at Hendersons which is celebrating 50 years in business. Followed by a browse round the shops - yes I did buy a few bits and pieces - I’m a girl! We then soaked up the ambience in Princes Street Gardens - full of people enjoying the sun. Perfect.

I do get asked to do some very interesting publishing tasks and this month was no exception. I was asked to re-create a 1952 copy of the Maud Review so they could sell it to coincide with the Jubilee. It was really interesting to read. The magazine, like mine, was funded by advertising. It reunited a mother and son who hadn’t seen each other in 50 years - whereas now, thanks to technology, we can hardly go 50 minutes! There were a few bonnie brides, a police report and a farewell to the local postie.

The other publication that I volunteer on is Pushing out the Boat and I went along to the launch back at the beginning of May. It was held at the Peacock Gallery in the Castlegate. It was great to have the writers read their own work allowing it to be brought to life. The Nissan Juke R was road tested at Goodwood - I would love to have a shot.

It looks super cool! Maybe need to book a session at Knockhill this summer to get the need for speed out of my system.

With Father’s Day fast approaching you could say it with flowers! Or even a great barbeque gadget.

Or why not cook him a barbeque meal? If he likes fish there is a great recipe to follow too. For the men that enjoy a good book I’ve put together a few suggestions. I can definitely recommend booking him some dance classes - great fun.

NEOS will be with us again in September and Easter Anguston Farm is taking part and looking for artists to display their sculptures etc at this great local charity. Junction Art have a centre page pull-out this month. Highlighting some new artists and their work which is available to view and buy until the end of July.

Bling Fling 2012 - Let’s Hear It F Organisers of this years’ Bling Fling Trainers and Tiaras Charity Walk at the Duthie Park on the 13th June were delighted both with the turn out and the amount raised at this years’ event.

Not the wind or the cold cold stop the 300 participants from sparkling in their pink tee shirts and tiaras with a bootylicious warm up with fitness trainer Steve Agyei before the 10k walk.

And afterwards everyone enjoyed a host of entertainments, therapies and pink fizz at the after party at the Winter Gardens.

Over ÂŁ40,000 was raised for Breast Cancer Support Services at ARI and Archway a local charity supporting over 200 children, young people and adults with learning disabilities.

Janine Davies, one of the organisers, expressed her thanks to everyone who took part and to all the companies and individuals who gave up their time and talents on the day to support the event. "We would like to thank everyone who signed up, turned up and for all the effort they put in in between to raise funds. With Bling Fling celebrating its Fifth Anniversary next year, organisers hope to hold 5 Bling Fling themed events to celebrate. "We are hoping to hold a range of events that will appeal to a lot of people and enable them to join the celebrations. We are just firming up dates at the moment so watch this space.

Bear Grylls Surprises Aberdeen Explorer Scouts Bear Grylls with Aberdeen’s Mannofield Explorers (Photo : Craig Allison) Scouts from across the North East of Scotland celebrated as Chief Scout Bear Grylls made a guest appearance at the Bear Hunt 2012 camp, held at Templars’ Park, Maryculter. Taking in the Aberdeen Scout campsite on a whirlwind tour of Scotland and Northern Ireland, Bear was greeted by over 1,500 Scouts of all ages.

Bear entered the campsite via the 9th Aberdeen Scouts’ traditional canvas tent site and was met with a Guard of Honour before being led around the park to take in the numerous attractions and activities organised by attending Scout Groups, including a cycling base run by the 14th Aberdeen Scouts. He then took to the stage to give an inspiring speech before checking out Templars’ Park’s new campfire circle on his way back to his helicopter, high-fiving as many Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers as he could on the way.

One Explorer Scout Unit received a massive surprise at the event... when Bear arrived wearing one of their hoodies! The Mannofield Explorers had sent Bear a hoodie earlier in the year to thank him for inspiring their Scouting and little did they realise that he would wear it on his whole tour!

Upon finding the Unit at the event, Bear made sure he stopped to chat and pose for photos with the group of enthusiastic, and understandably excited, 14-18 year olds.

Explorer Calum McRobb, 16, said: “It was a real honour to meet Bear Grylls.

We’re all big fans of his, and to see him wearing one of our hoodies was amazing! The whole Bear Hunt has been fantastic.”

Craig Allison, 27, Explorer Scout Leader at the Mannofield Explorers, added: “We were delighted that Bear chose to wear his hoodie this weekend. It was a real shock when we saw him step through the trees!

“We sent it earlier this year to thank Bear for all he has done for Scouting since being appointed Chief Scout in 2009, and also for inspiring us to be as

adventurous as we can at Explorers.”

In a time where Scouting is more popular than ever – over 30 million Scouts have taken their promise worldwide – Bear Grylls is certainly playing his part in keeping British youths enthusiastic about being a part of the Scout Movement.

Assistant Explorer Scout Leader Eoin Smith, 21, concluded: “By wearing our hoodie around the UK, we hope that Bear has been able to spread the word about Scouting in Aberdeen. There are so many exciting opportunities and experiences to be had in Scouting, and adult volunteers are doing a fantastic job providing everyday adventure for over 1,500 young people in the city.”

Let’s talk wine...

F is for Fizz There is something about the pop of a cork and the effervescence of bubbles as they foam in the glass that is quite special but you don’t need to reserve sparkling wines for special occasions, they can be enjoyed any time and are perfect for summer drinking.

The character of Champagne is defined by so many different things –the cool growing conditions, chalky soil and the skill of the blender combining the 3 grapes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier from a number of villages to name a few.

With a similar climate and soil to the Champagne region and using the same production method and grape varieties, English sparkling wines are becoming a force to be reckoned with.

Continuing in its popularity is Prosecco from the north east of Italy. Usually dry, its all about the fruitiness of the Prosecco grape and is good as an aperitif.

Cava is the sparkling wine of Spain. Most of the production is in Catalonia. The production method is the same as champagne ( the traditional method) and the wine is also influenced by the warmer climate as well as the use of local grape varieties –Xarel-lo, Parellada and Macabeo . Producers sometimes put Chardonnay into the mix too.

The classic grapes of Champagne do their thing around the new world too, producers often using the traditional method, the grapes powered by sunshine.

So whether its for sharing with friends, sipping in the garden or to enjoy with canapés there will be a fizz out there for you.

Clever ways with a sprinkling of salt Salt is most commonly used as a flavour enhancer, but this household staple is much more versatile than that. Salt has an affinity to water and can draw moisture out of many foods. What’s more, grains of table salt are very hard, which means they can act as an abrasive. These properties give salt a variety of uses around the home.

When boiling eggs, a pinch of salt in the water will prevent the shells from cracking and adding a pinch when beating eggs or cream will make them whip faster and higher. Moreover, if you rub salt into the cavities of chicken or turkey, it will help to keep the bird moist while cooking.

Staying in the kitchen, washing green leafy vegetables in salt water will easily remove

all the dirt and if you need to chill a bottle of wine quickly, just place it in an ice bucket with alternate layers of ice and salt, fill with water and your tipple will be ready in about ten minutes. Even red wine stains are no problem to remove - simply cover the stain with salt and pour over boiling water.

You can also use salt to remove any sticky residue on the bottom of an iron, by running the hot iron over plain paper sprinkled with salt. And if you are caught out by frost and ice, table salt can be used as a substitute for rock salt, to de-ice paths and pavements.

So with all these handy uses, you might want to think twice before tossing that spilled salt over your shoulder.

Wait ‘Til Your Father Gets Home Mother’s Day is always a doddle to sort out: flowers, some chocs and smother her with cuddles. With June comes Father’s Day and suddenly we’re all stumped. We’ve put together a selection of books where fathers figure. Some will make you laugh, whilst others will have you crying with pity or frustration. Why not pop one in the post and start up a conversation with the old man?

King Lear William Shakespeare Talk about the original ‘daddy’s girls’. King Lear decides to divide his estate between his three daughters based on how they flatter him, this apparently proving who loves him best. It’s a bit of a recipe for disaster, and Lear quickly descends into madness. Cordelia is the only daughter not to play along and is promptly disinherited. It’s a tragic story of misplaced fatherly love. Our advice to dads: read the cards from your children carefully!

Boys Don’t Cry Malorie Blackman What happens when fatherhood is thrust upon you? Dante’s waiting for his A-level results but instead, finds his baby daughter on the doorstep.

Her mother can’t cope and Dante’s forced to face up to his responsibilities. Battling with social preconceptions and the realisation that his plans have to change, this is a rare book that tells the story of teenage pregnancy from the father’s point of view.

Death of a Salesman Arthur Miller Arthur Miller’s ultimate tragic hero Willy Loman is a salesman at the end of his career. Miller wanted to capture the struggles of the ‘everyman’ by creating this ‘low-man’. It raises questions as to what makes a man great. Willy is a truly flawed character, constantly dispensing terrible advice to his two sons, Biff and Happy. He fails to see the love his family feels for him and this is the real tragedy. To the last, he strives to leave something for his boys so that they at least, can live out the American Dream.

The Mosquito Coast Paul Theroux The young Charlie Fox documents the time spent in the Honduras jungles after his father Allie uproots the family and turns his back on American capitalism and consumerism. The book charts the unravelling of Allie as he strives to find a better life for his ‘tribe’. There’s no doubt that Allie’s behaviour is erratic and maniacal but his sense of adventure and inventiveness means you can’t write him off as a bad father.

Man and Boy Tony Parsons Harry Silver’s life is turned upside down when the boy in him has a one night stand. Suddenly his marriage is over, he’s lost his job and he’s bringing up his son on his own. Mirroring Parson’s own life, this is the story of a 30 year old TV executive who’s forced to grow-up. This hilarious comic novel is wonderfully written and portrays the highs and lows of the touching and often tender relationship between a father and son. Will Harry ever reach maturity? Only time will tell.

To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee Scout and Jem Finch have been raised by their lawyer father Atticus in the southern town of Maycomb during the Great Depression.

Atticus has the respect of both his children and the local community until he decides to defend Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white woman. Incensed by injustice and racial inequality, Atticus takes on the whole town’s prejudices and finally wins a place in everyone’s hearts.

Here come the grills The gadgets that can make your barbecues better We Britons love to barbecue: the slightest hint of sunshine has us rushing to the shed to bring out the barbie and burn things to cinders. Gadget firms haven’t been slow to notice and there are all kinds of gadgets that can amuse guests, chill drinks and even help with the cooking.

Some of the most useful gadgets are the simplest. Frosty Ice Tankards (£5.95 each) are ideal for keeping beer cold on warm days: simply keep them in the freezer until it’s time for a can and they’ll keep it nice and frosty. Dedicated wine coolers will do the same for your Chenin Blanc.

While your guests enjoy their drinks, you can give them something to look at too. Strings of while, blue or multi-coloured LED lights cost around £20 for a wall’s worth, and as they’re solar powered there’s no need to run electrical cables or worry about the electricity bill. You’ll find an enormous range of solar lights from deck lights (£15 for four) and post lights (around £15 for ten) to lanterns (£9 for ten), coach lamps (£11 for two), colour changing table lights (£15 for one) and faintly horrible illuminated animals, fairies and insects.

This being Britain, the evenings cool down quickly, so inevitably there are stacks of patio heaters to choose from, including wall-mounted halogen heaters (around £180), free-standing electric patio heaters (from around £35) and freestanding gas ones (£99+). Or you could just buy a charcoal kettle barbecue and huddle around that when you’ve finished cooking.

Did someone say cooking? Gadgets can help with that too. If you’re fed up with the taste of lighter fuel, persuade the cook to invest in a Chimney Starter (about £15) instead. Using nothing more than two sheets of newspaper, it makes lighting charcoal barbecues a doddle. A digital thermometer’ is a good idea too, as it can solve the “burnt outside, raw inside” problem that can affect some barbecued food. If you don’t have a barbecue and don’t fancy those horrible disposable ones, how about a flower pot? The HotPot BBQ (£99.99 from Firebox.com) looks like a terracotta pot but contains a stainless steel barbecue grill beneath the foliage.

It’s not huge (37cm by 27cm) and best for small meals but it’s quite clever. If you’d prefer something more substantial, the Portable Notebook BBQ Grill (£24) folds up for easy storage but offers a decent 45x30cm cooking surface. Both barbecues are charcoal-fired, but if you’d rather have a portable gas barbecue then celebrity chef Marco Pierre White has the MarcO-Grill 1000, which looks good, won’t damage surfaces and costs around £99.

Some BBQ gadgets are a bit less serious. If you fancy making the famous Beer Can Chicken, where half a can of beer bastes the chicken from the inside, then try a chrome Beer Can Chicken Roaster for around £10. Wimbledon Open Championships take place in June, commencing six weeks before the first Monday in August.

The first event was staged in 1877 by the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club to raise funds for a new grass roller. It attracted 22 participants and was won by 27-year-old W. Spenser Gore who received 12 guineas. In 1884, Ladies Singles and Men’s Doubles were introduced.

Britain dominated the first 30 years, with the Renshaw twins winning 13 titles from 18811889. In 1905, the American May Sutton won the Ladies title. In 1907 Norman Brookes of Australia became the first overseas Men’s champion.

The 1920s were dominated by France with the outrageous Suzanne Lenglen (skirt just below the knee!) winning 5 successive titles from 1919, and the ‘Four Muskateers’ of Rene Lacoste, Jean Borotra, Henri Cochet and Jacques Brugnon winning 6 Singles and 5 Doubles.

Britain resurged in the 1930s with Fred Perry securing a hat-trick from 1934-36 and Dorothy Round winning in 1934 for a British double. The U.S. then held the Women’s Singles title from 1938-1958 with Althea Gibson becoming the first black champion in 1957. From 1956-1971, the Australians made Centre Court their own.

The first professional Championships were held in 1968 and this era has been dominated by 5 players - Bjorn Borg (5 successive singles), Pete Sampras (7 singles), Martina Navratilova (9 singles, 10 doubles), Steffi Graf (7 singles) and Roger Federer (6 singles).

The 2012 tournament promises to be as exciting as any. Perhaps Andy Murray can end the 70+ year wait for a British champion?

Bernard’s Unlikely Catch Bernard has been fishing on the canal bank since before breakfast. The grey cloud and drizzle have slowly burnt off, and the sun is now peeping shyly from behind fluffy clouds. Early on, the occasional dog walker strolled past and nodded to him. But if anyone lingered too long, or looked as though they wanted to chat, he would pull his cap down and hunch over his fishing pole.

Bernard prefers the peace and quiet. He casts another handful of wriggling maggots into the dull water, but the perch aren’t nibbling today and his keep-net has been empty all morning.

In the distance he hears the rattle of a bicycle.

He glances along the towpath and sees a young woman peddling towards him. She’s riding an old fashioned butcher’s bike with a basket on the front. In it, a flowery shopping bag bounces up and down, as she awkwardly veers along the bumpy path.

“Yes it’s a lovely bike, Marjorie, reconditioned,” she declares loudly. Bernard frowns. There appears to be no sign of Marjorie. He then notices the sunlight glinting off a silver object in her ear.

“Daft thing’s talking on the phone and not looking where she’s going,” Bernard thinks.

Just as she’s about to pass him, a mallard takes flight, quacking in a flurry of alarm. It skims the top of her head and disappears over the hedgerow. The woman cries out and swerves, the front wheel of her bike leaving the narrow path with a jolt and veering towards the canal. With complaining brakes she comes to an abrupt stop.

Bernard thinks she’s had a lucky escape, but then in dreadful slow motion, the woman and her bike begin to topple sideways. She puts her foot down to stop herself but beneath it is only water.

As she falls the woman lets out a long squeal, then both woman and bike slap straight into the canal.

Bernard wipes the drops of cold water from his face and stares dumbstruck at the water. A couple of bubbles break the surface and then the woman bursts up, gasping and flapping her arms about wildly.

“You can stand up,” Bernard says gruffly. “It’s not deep.”

She struggles to her feet, apparently unhurt, but with grimy rivers flowing down her hair and face. She tries to steady herself and makes a grab for the fishing pole. Bernard carefully moves it out of her reach, as after all these things cost money. Then, feeling more charitable he rises to his feet, and reaches out, offering her his hand.

Unsteadily she slips on the slimy canal bottom, flails, then manages to take the outstretched hand. Bernard drags her and the heavy bike out, both scummy with mud and bedraggled in duck weed.

The woman sits down squelching on the grass next to Bernard, then spits in a most unladylike fashion into the water.

“Well, that was a surprise.” She gasps. She begins to wring the water out of her hair, then freezes as though stung.

“My mobile!”

She drags her sodden bag out of the bicycle basket, water pouring from it like a sieve. Bernard doesn’t fancy the mobile’s chances, but says nothing. She opens the bag, thrusts her hand inside and then without warning she screams and throws the bag into the air. Bernard is bewildered. He stares at the woman as she points at the bag, opening and closing her mouth.

Gingerly, he picks the bag up and looks inside.

There, thrashing and twisting, is a beautiful perch.

“Well, that’s one way to catch ‘em.” He chuckles.

Pan-fried mackerel fillet with lemon spring vegetables Serves 2 Prep time 15 mins Cooking time 15 mins

Ingredients 25g butter 1 banana shallot, peeled and sliced 1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed 400g mixed fresh vegetables like broad beans, carrots, peas, spring greens, broccoli 100ml stock Juice and zest of 1/2 lemon Sea salt and freshly ground pepper 150g creme fraiche 3-4 sprigs dill, roughly chopped 1/2 tbsp olive oil 2 large mackerel fillets

Method

Heat the butter in a sautĂŠ pan or deep frying pan. Gently cook the shallot for about 5 minutes until it starts to soften and becomes translucent. Add the garlic and cook for another couple of minutes.

Add the vegetable mix, cutting anything large like carrots, to match the size of the other vegetables. Stir for a minute or so, pour in the stock and lemon juice and add the zest.

Season, then cover and cook for 5 minutes.

Spoon in the creme fraiche and dill and cook for another 3-4 minutes.

Heat another frying pan with the olive oil. Slice the mackerel fillet in half lengthways, taking out any bones you may find. Season the fish then pan-fry for 2 minutes on each side.

Serve the mackerel on a bed of the vegetables with plenty of lemon wedges and some new potatoes.

Guide Dogs is committed to changing this and delivers a world class guide dog service as part of a range of mobility services, and works to break down barriers to ensure blind and partially sighted people can get out and about on their own terms. In Scotland alone, there are 514 qualified working guide dogs, with 27 of them in Aberdeen. You may have seen several guide dogs and their owners going about our city. Our guest speaker is Mike Gibb who was responsible for setting up DAWGS, a rehoming service for dogs. In addition, Mike is a well-known lyricist, playwright and Burns enthusiast. Mike Gibb has been commissioned to work with composer Paul Mealor (Music for the Royal wedding/ Military Wives) to write a new Anthem for the City of Aberdeen. Lawns A lawn is an essential part of most gardens, but how can you make sure yours looks good? Feeding a lawn is essential to ensure it looks lush and green. Feeding keeps the grasses growing vigorously enough to help keep out moss and weed growth. A poorly maintained and inadequately fed lawn is far more likely to be invaded by moss, weeds and is prone to disease. Choose a lawn fertilizer formulated for the specific needs of the grass at this time of year; nitrogen is often in short supply largely because it is so important in the formation of the grass and, as this is constantly being removed by mowing, it’s constantly necessary to replace it. There are also many other nutrients, in particular phosphorus, potassium and iron which help to promote and maintain top quality growth.

lawn requires is determined by many factors including soil type, frequency of irrigation or rainfall, frequency of mowing and whether clippings are left on the lawn.

If your lawn has a weed problem and you’re happy using chemicals, it’s easiest to use a product containing both weed killers (usually two different ones to provide best overall control) and a fertilizer. Applying these together ensures rapid grass growth to fill in the gaps left by the dead weeds. If you have time, there is a marginally better effect if you feed the lawn with the spring feed then wait a couple of weeks before applying the weed killer. Small infestations of weeds can be removed effectively by hand, using a daisy grubber or even an old kitchen knife.

A proprietary moss killer should take care of the moss, but follow the instructions carefully to ensure that the mosses have been thoroughly killed before you attempt to rake them out. If living moss is raked out the t : 01224 - 318561

problem becomes worse. It’s worth remembering that once the moss is dead the lawn will look worse than when the moss was alive. Once you have raked the dead moss out, the overall effect is even worse – all the bare patches may make you despair, but if you keep the lawn well fed or, if necessary over-seed the worst looking areas as well, it will soon green up.

Regular mowing is essential. A lawn which is left for too long before the grass is cut will soon lose its good, green appearance and when it’s finally cut, you may well wonder if it will ever look right again. If cut frequently, so that only small amounts of grass are removed at any one time, it should grow dense and green. As a rule, you should try to remove up to 30% of the grass growth at a single mowing. During spring, once the weather starts to warm up, the frequency of cut will be noticeably greater than in early spring. With the onset of summer the rate increases rapidly again.

However, if the weather is dry and the lawn isn’t well watered, growth rate will be correspondingly slow. If the grass is to be well walked on or used as a playing surface then the cut should be kept to ¾-1 inch. If you want a really smart lawn for show that isn’t subjected to pounding feet, then keep the grass to ¼ inch or slightly longer, but remember that to achieve this during summer you will need to use the mower several times a week – another good reason for keeping a more low-key lawn!

What about mowers? The range seems to be ever increasing and the one you choose will probably be determined by cost as well as the job you want your machine to do. If you have a level, fairly highquality lawn then a cylinder mower is best, as it tends to give a better quality cut. If the surface of your lawn is the slightest bit uneven then a rotary mower is a better choice as it will cope much better in ‘adverse’ situations and, in most cases the cut it gives is perfectly adequate. If you remove a fair amount of grass at each cut then the clippings should definitely be raked up immediately.

However, if you cut the lawn regularly and produce only tiny clippings then, particularly during very dry weather, there may be some advantage to leaving them on the lawn where they can act like a mulch and help to conserve soil moisture.

I must admit if I had a nice long drive in front of my house, like Lord March, I wouldn’t get much work done.

The temptation to hoon up and down and scare the milkman in anything with an engine would just be too great to resist.

Unfortunately, I don’t have that problem, so an invite to apply some rubber to the Goodwood estate’s well wheel-trodden hill climb is always welcome.

My invite came for the media day for Goodwood’s 2012 motoring events – the Festival of Speed and the Revival. The day is a chance for Lord March to ramp up the excitement surrounding the two events and a good opportunity for the media to get behind the wheel of some new metal from the supporting manufacturers.

Fortunately I was looking forward to one helluva ride. Nissan had offered a last minute spin up the hill in one of only two Juke Rs in the world. For those of you that aren’t in the know, this is basically the love child of a Juke / GT-R one night stand – and the right genes made it across into the sibling.

Under the matt black Juke bodywork is the running gear and engine from the GT-R. The 3.8-litre, 485bhp twin turbo charged engine has been squeezed into the Juke’s bodywork, the four-wheel drive carried across and it has the performance to match. Foot to the floor and 60mph arrives in around three seconds. The mad project was conceived as a marketing exercise by Nissan GB’s former MD Paul Willcox who, when he took up his new post in Europe, gave it the green light.

Costing £250,000 each, the pair were designed and built in the UK by RML’ one left-hand and one right-hand drive. The latter is for exclusive use in the UK. So what’s it like to drive? Well, the 1.16-mile Lord March drive was never going to be long enough to get a real feel for this amazing car, but first impressions were staggering.

The Juke R handles all that power remarkably well, transferring it into forward thrust with no drama, much like the bigger GT-R does. There was just enough time to savour the whoosh of the turbos on the start straight as the hay bales and trees quickly melted into a summery soup of colour.

The first corner is a tight right hander and an overzealous prod on the cold brakes soon made me realise I could have carried 20mph more through the bend.

In front of the house, I managed five seconds-ish of full throttle madness and the Juke R’s turn of pace staggered – 120mph was indicated on the digital readout (my passenger reliably informed me).

Flint wall safely passed without grazes, the final section of the run allowed a little more confidence. It was soon clear that although hand-built, the Juke R is a very competent and polished piece of kit. It reminds me of a Renault 5 GT Turbo – but turned all the way up to 11. It’s just a shame these two marketing models are all we’re ever likely to see. There’s very little chance we’ll ever get a production run model. The cost and build time would make it very difficult to justify - especially when a GT-R can be had for circa £70k.

Still, as drives up garden paths go, this Nissan-powered excursion will be remembered as a very special one.

Corfu Highlights Corfu is the greenest of the Greek islands, festooned with vines and olive groves and tall cypress trees pointing straight up to the sky. Gentle shores in the east, mostly shingle, sheer cliffs but gorgeous sands in the west, lowlands in the south, mountains in the north, the scenery changes with every bend of the road.

Framed by wooded hills on the west coast, Paleokastritsa is one of the most idyllic spots, all crystal clear waters and crescent-shaped bays meandering around cliffs and rocks.

Pink villas peep through the trees like giant candyfloss, boats sail around the coast and into gaping caves, most exciting the ‘blue eye’ where shoals of fish swim in a luminous patch of blue water.

Up on the headland, crowds head for the pocket-sized monastery, keen to set eyes on precious icons, light candles and enjoy panoramic views over land and sea.

In the distance, meadows spread across the slopes, sprinkled with pink orchids and wild gladioli and isolated farms tucked in lemon groves. There are secluded coves, sweeping sands and quiet trails where rosemary and oregano leave their scent in the air.

Meanwhile on the east coast, Kerkyra, the capital, stretches across a peninsula guarded by two Venetian forts. The ‘Old Fortress’ is the most spectacular with ramparts and moat, courtyards, canons, museum and a lighthouse with dizzying views. Mainland Greece is just across the water and in the distance you can see Mount Pantokrator, Corfu’s highest point, just short of 3000 feet.

Down town, the main square is occupied by a cricket ground, complemented by an English bandstand and the elegant Liston Arcade modelled on the Parisian rue de Rivoli. Bars and restaurants spread under the trees, horse-drawn carriages wait for custom and the Old Town beckons, a maze of paved lanes and stepped alleyways, tall buildings and spires jostling for space, hidden squares, souvenir stalls and balconies draped in laundry and flower pots. Cruise ships dock on the western pier, yachts bob at anchor while fishermen unload the early morning catch.

A short distance from the capital is the stylish Achilles Palace, not a ruin of ancient Greece, as one might expect, but a flamboyant 19th century building in neo-classical style, commissioned by Austrian Empress Sissi to nurse a broken heart. Achilles was her hero and painting and statues pay tribute among colonnades, stucco work and personal belongings of the empress and the next owner, Wilhelm II. But best of all is the fabulous panorama from the gardens, where you might feel just like the beautiful Sissi or James Bond, since the palace featured as a casino in ‘For Your Eyes only’.

The Kanoni peninsula is just a stone’s throw away, home to ‘Mon Repos’, an elegant mansion built by the British and later, summer residence of the Greek royalty and birthplace of Prince Philip. Everyone is welcome to explore the grounds and house now exhibiting centuries of the island’s history. Excavations around the estate have unveiled vestiges of Paleopolis, the ancient city of Kerkyra.

But it is at the end of the peninsula that you find Corfu’s most iconic image. Set on a tiny islet, the Vlacherna monastery comes straight out of a fairy tale, flanked by a single cypress tree and the mere pencil line of a gleaming causeway.

Who can you talk to about ANYTHING!?

Wow! Following my article last month about real friends versus virtual friends and how much time it can take to maintain a circle of either I have had some very interesting conversations with readers of this magazine. It seems the pressure to “keep up” and be “out there” with a wide circle of friends online is quite onerous and a bit daunting for many people and costing them a great deal in terms of time resources and anxiety. In fact, just as I was checking over this article before submitting it another email has just hit my inbox from a highly regarded psychology-related website (www.PsychCentral. com) linking depression in undergraduates with the amount of time they spend on the internet, chatting and sharing messages with others etc..

On the other hand of course social media, if you manage to contain the amount of time you devote to it, can of course be a wonderful way of keeping in touch with far flung friends and family in this global community in which we now find ourselves.

So now, continuing that theme from last month, I just want to add one more question, and that is Who can you talk to about (absolutely) ANYTHING? Friends fulfil so many important roles in our lives – keeping us company , sharing fun, sharing experiences and celebrations, support in both the good times and the trickier times too. Friends can give us laughter, courage, lend us a hand with practical tasks and so on, the list is truly endless, and good friends are amongst the very greatest riches we can ever have in our lives.

But sometimes there are very good reasons reasons why, even with the best of friendship networks, folk come to someone like me to talk about things that they feel unable or unwilling to share with anyone else. Some examples might be to avoid upsetting those who care and love them the most, or to speak very frankly and plainly

and explore ideas, plans and dreams without feeling “boxed in” by the views that those who know them best might hold about them.

So for you this month I just want to say I sincerely hope that amongst your friends, whether those close by or those you perhaps have to make more effort to keep up with by phone or other media, that you have at least one or two who you can truly talk to, anytime and in any way you need to, about absolutely anything.

Contemporary Makers’ In the 4 years since opening in 2008, Junction arts has always supported both traditional 2D artists and 3D makers alike but this will be their first ever makers only show dedicated to all things contemporary in the world of craft and design.

Contemporary Makers’ Ashley Morris

Ashley is a recent graduate of Gray’s School of Art “The main focus of my research is movement, being interested in the way kinetic toys move and the mechanical playfulness of automata.

My work also draws inspiration from animation and characterisation in illustration.

I began my investigation by noticing the way in which people project and imagine shapes, faces and characters in everyday objects. My take on this was to look more closely at vegetables. Within their shapes and forms, I found the potential to create my own characters. I took inspiration by looking at the content and layout of children’s stories, which helped me to create my own simple stories using my vegetable characters.

This gave them meaning and this process also influenced my choice of materials.

My pieces are made using a combination of laser cutting, photo etching on copper and dyeing of Perspex and wood. I like the way these materials give a child-like

quality. My main goal for the project was to create a range of pieces that were interactive, fun and quirky yet sophisticated.”

Little Blue Twigs

Created by Lynne Strachan and Mags Gray Little Blue Twigs is a contemporary collaboration between a ceramic artist and a visual artist who are based in the North East of Scotland.

They make limited edition jewellery and small decorative home wares.

Mags explains more about how their partnership began; “Lynne and I met at NEOS 2011 when we were exhibiting at the same venue, she seemed to like my wonky bowls which were part of one of my sculptural pieces and I was attracted to her sharp colourful graphics as soon as I saw them.

During the NEOS week we got talking about how we saw our work develop, it then became obvious that the sharp clean graphics could be an interesting contrast on the obviously wonky handmade bowls.

We produced a few bowls, did some market research the results of which were very encouraging however, it was during this research

that we became aware of the possibility of creating a collection of jewellery using the same methods and materials. Each bowl and piece of jewellery is created by hand and is therefore unique; we constantly review our designs allowing our collections to remain fresh and interesting.”

Kevin Andrew Morris Kevin is a recent graduate of Gray’s School of Art. “My most recent collection, “Bird Tableware, Teahouse

“consists of a series of ceramic objects such as teapots, bowls and birdhouses and their relevant counterparts, birds and teabags. It looks at the idea of function and ornament questioning how the audience would make use of these objects and what environment they would be found in. The Terracotta Stags heads and larger Vessels I have been making recently continue to look at similar themes of object, function and environment.

Contemporary Makers’ my current work, be it objects found or placed in a natural environment or within our own man made habitats. How we interact within nature and our attempts to contain,

harness or even contribute to it though objects is very interesting to me, I try to translate this in my work.

My means of expressing this is through craft and more specifically ceramics.

I primarily use slip cast stoneware as I enjoy the repetition, yet play that the process allows. I tend to work mainly in batch production.

My current work is generally once high fired and polished on the exterior to highlight the materials natural qualities; selected elements are spray glazed to finish the pieces.

My work is designed to be functional yet playful, challenging the material and meaning of domestic objects.”

In 2003 Fiona graduated with an honours degree in Constructed textiles from Duncan of Jordanstone college of Art and Design in Dundee. Shortly after graduating she gaining a

placement with Orkney based accessory company Tait & Style while exhibiting at New Designers in London. This experience inspired her to start her own business and this is when Candy Coated was formed.

“Currently I am employed as an accessory designer at Johnstons of Elgin. I have been designing woven and knitted accessories with Johnstons for almost 6 years and although based in Elgin at the moment spent most of last year based in there London office. I think this has reawaked my need to create my own products from visiting so many interesting and exciting market places there.

Everything in the Candy Coated collection is designed, handmade and produced by me. Each piece is made with great care and attention and with a mix of vintage and new fabrics as well as old and new techniques. Pieces are often unique but if not they are always special.

Having a humorous slant Nervous Stitch’s name comes from the emotional connection between people and textiles.

Jenny is passionate about knit and keeping traditional skills alive while keeping these skills current and relevant for today. With this in mind Jenny’s inspiration for the collection comes from things she loves and items she has collected over the years.

Nervous Stitches products appeal to design conscious people who are interested in high quality products that are made in Scotland.

The collection is knitted using British lamb’s wool in bright and bold colour combinations. These fuse a nostalgic illustrative look with strong evocative imagery.

Siobhan recently graduated from Gray’s School of Art and now works as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator in Aberdeen.

“My work is inspired by places I’ve been and things I’ve seen, mainly in Scotland. I like to create and illustrate sights from memory as I imagine I saw them.

My work takes form in printed works, cushions, tote bags, clocks and cards.

The Birdhouse Clocks shown here are a series of handmade illustrated clocks inspired by the crooked birdhouses found in woodlands. They include a mix of screenprint and hand drawn images.”

Teenage drinking

Binge drinking in teenagers is a serious problem in the UK. How can you help your teen become aware of the dangers?

The good news is that the number of teenagers drinking underage is actually on the decline in the UK. The bad news is that those who are drinking are doing it more often - and to excess, such that it is a real problem. Binge drinking is usually defined as consuming four drinks in a row for women, or five in a row for men, at least once in the previous two weeks.

We have one of the highest levels of teenage drinking in Europe, with the largest increase being seen among 14-year-olds. While it’s not good for a 14-year-old to be drinking anywhere near this level, how much the alcohol affects them will also depend on their body size and shape, plus what stage of puberty they’ve reached.

We tend to think that drinking is less of an issue than drugs, but it leads to many problems. It can cause a lack of concentration, so your child may begin to fail in school. Your child could suffer from alcohol poisoning, which can be life threatening. It affects the body’s involuntary reflexes, such as breathing and the gag reflex.

Look out for changes in behaviour that you think just aren’t the ‘norm’ for your child.

Are they finding it harder to concentrate on homework or are they sleeping a lot more during the day? Has their attitude changed towards you and do they resent any sort of questioning about how much they are drinking? Are they staying with friends more than before to try to hide from you what they are doing? Have you noticed symptoms of excessive drinking such as vomiting and shakiness?

It leads to drink driving and makes your teen less likely to practice safe sex as well as causing anti-social behaviour - your child will be doing things they wouldn’t do under normal circumstances.

Talking to your teen Your teen may be binge drinking because they think it will make them feel good - or look good in front of their friends, or they may be using it as a way to relieve stress, or to appear older than they are. www.thegranitecitygazette.co.uk

Children learn from example, so if your child regularly sees you drinking too much, they will see this as acceptable. If you think the problem is getting out of hand, then talk to their school and consult your GP for advice on obtaining professional help.

Talk to your teen before the problem becomes too serious. Chatting in front of a TV programme where alcohol is featured is a good way to have a more relaxed conversation. Family meal times are a good way to open up discussion and they may talk more freely. Ask what they’ve learned about alcohol and drug issues at school. Remind them that they don’t have to drink to excess to fit in.

The three leading causes of death for 15-24-year-olds are car accidents, murder and suicide - and alcohol is a leading factor in all three. In fact, more than 5,000 deaths every year of people under the age 21 are linked to underage drinking.

So don’t wait for the problem to get worse, start talking to your teen now.

Design and decorating

Cosy and bright

Width is the crucial issue in hallways, and unless you’re prepared to do some substantial building work and remove a wall, you’re probably stuck with what you have. To increase the feeling of space in a narrow hallway, use pale colours and add large mirrors (ideal for checking your reflection just before you leave the house, too). Keep the space as clear as possible by adding only the most essential items of slender storage furniture, and using the full height of your walls rather than encroaching on floor space.

If, on the other hand, you have a large and spacious hallway – lucky you! Think of it as an extra living space and make the most of it by adding a sofa or chairs, bookcases or a writing desk. Whatever the size of your hall, consider it as a linking room and make sure your choice of decorative schemes works well when doorways to other rooms are open. If you have chosen a pale colour scheme for the walls, woodwork could be slightly darker for interest. Halls that see a lot of wear and tear could be painted with an extra-tough paint, or clad with tongue-and-groove panelling, tiles or hard-wearing wallpaper.

Under-floor heating is ideal for narrow halls, but do check that it will be compatible with your flooring. On the other hand, if there’s room, you could opt for eye-catching radiators, perhaps a period-style cast-iron column or an eye-catching modern type.

Fabulous flooring Halls and stairs are high-traffic areas, so ensure that your flooring is non-slip, durable, resistant to dirt and simple to clean – if you can mop it, so much the better. Stone, ceramic or quarry tiles, or colourful Victorian encaustic tiles, are all easy to care for, while solid wooden boards or parquet require only some regular polishing or waxing. Cheap wood laminates may not last too long in such a well-used space. Lino or vinyl can look impressive, too, especially when laid in patterns. Carpet, however, is more problematic as you’ll need to choose a colour or pattern that won’t show the dirt – and make sure that it is suitable for a hallway: an 80:20 twist classified for heavy domestic use is often the best.

Hall lighting doesn’t need to be bright enough for reading, but it should be welcoming and lead the eye into your home: it could be an amazing chandelier (given high enough ceilings) or a series of recessed ceiling downlights. In a narrow hall, avoid wall lights – they will just act as obstacles.

Storage Most people store a variety of things in their halls, from coats, scarves and hats to phone books, buggies or vacuum cleaners. The type of storage you choose is always best moulded around what you need to store, how much space it will take and how frequently you need to access it. The main choice is between built-in, hidden storage or open, display-type storage. The former is best when space is tight – slender floor-to-ceiling cupboards with plain doors, (perhaps painted the same colour as the walls, or even mirrored to maximise light) ranked along one wall, will hold masses yet be hardly noticeable. On the other hand, you could make a statement with an eclectic selection of free-standing cupboards, sideboards, tables, benches, dressers, baskets, shelves and so on. If necessary, fit hooks or pulleys high up on walls to hold bikes, and perhaps a coat stand or row of pegs for everyday coats and bags. Umbrella stands and boot racks are ideal for spacious, country-style halls. Somewhere to keep post and keys is a good idea, too, whether a bowl and rack on a dresser or a small, wall-mounted cupboard and set of hooks. If you have lots of books or delicate items to display, a shelf running the length of the hallway above head height can be extremely useful. For times when space is really hard to find, it is even possible to build storage drawers into the treads of a wooden staircase.

Robert Gordon University and Aberdeen College signed a memorandum of agreement which will renew the collaboration between the two organisations, especially on degree-linked courses, and confirm their commitment to assisting more students to achieve a degree.

In the last three years 652 HND students from Aberdeen College have progressed to year 3 of a relevant degree course at Robert Gordon University.

In addition a further 128 students have progressed to year 2 following completion of an HNC. Professor Ferdinand von Prondzynski, Principal of RGU welcomed the extension of the initiative.

“Many students who would not have previously considered a university degree completed their HND or HNC and realised they had the potential to push themselves further. There is no doubt that this initiative has encouraged more students to achieve higher qualifications by easing the transition from school to university.”

“Undertaking an HND programme at College helps students build confidence and gain skills in a particular vocational area, with the added bonus of achieving a nationally recognised diploma. The BA in Commercial Photography is a specific example. The course was designed in 2008 as a direct response to the desire by HND Photography students at Aberdeen College to achieve a degree, but who had no degree link option available to them.

Staff at Gray’s School of Art and Aberdeen College worked together to develop a course that allows students to develop further the photography skills that had been acquired at Aberdeen College. Local Events Diary Grampian Twins club is a voluntary

group which has been running for over 30 years.

The club is here to help parents and parents to be, of twins and multiples through sharing experiences, supporting parents through the early days and providing a safe play area for multiples and mums to meet and have a chat and enjoy refreshments every month.

Community News

There may be an opportunity for Community Councillors and interested residents to undertake a guided tour of the Town House and Councillor Stewart will investigate the option of such a tour for September.

Queen’s Cross/Harlaw Community Council met on Tuesday 8th May in St Joseph’s School.

We were pleased to welcome PC Mike Stobie and both Davie Henderson and Dave McDonald of the City Wardens. PC Stobie gave an encouraging report on crime figures in the West End, advising that they are trending downwards. There are still the usual issues with vandalism and metal thefts are becoming a concern, but in all, April was a reasonably good month. Of course, no crime is acceptable and residents in Albert Terrace have an issue with drinkers congregating there throughout the day; however, they are compiling evidence for the police who will increase their patrols there and can hopefully resolve this problem.

There was more discussion of the ongoing problems with the No. 13 bus service and anyone experiencing difficulties is encouraged to write directly to Dave Stewart at FirstBus. The full minute will be displayed on our notice board outside Queen’s Cross Church.

The City Wardens continue their hi-visibility patrols and are ever-vigilant with regard to dog fouling, illegal parking and littering. They will be attending a PTA meeting at Albyn School when they will again remind parents of their responsibilities when dropping off children in the morning or collecting them in the afternoon.

Councillor Jennifer Stewart was congratulated on her re-election to the City Council. She advised that the make-up of the administration would be decided at the full Council meeting on the 16th. This date would also see decisions taken on the composition of the various committees. She advised that shrubs and other plants were to be cut back following a number of reports of poor visibility at the Queen’s Road/Anderson Drive roundabout. U-turns are to be banned on Anderson Drive in the vicinity of Maryville Place as this is obviously a hazardous manoeuvre on such a busy dual carriageway.

Mature students invited to learn more about nursing Mature students interested in a career in nursing will for the first time be able to attend a special taster event at Robert Gordon University.

The School of Nursing and Midwifery’s taster day for mature applicants will be held on Wednesday 22 August within the Clinical Skills Centre on the university’s Garthdee campus.

Unlike the School’s well-established taster day programme and summer school which are tailored to the needs of school pupils, this new one-day event has been designed specifically for adults who are looking for a career change or are seeking to return to work after an extended period of leave.

During the taster day, delegates will attend information sessions which explore the nursing profession before participating in hands-on tutorials where they will learn core nursing skills such as communication, hand washing, bed-making and feeding.

The afternoon will then see them put these new skills to the test in a live setting by undertaking simulated nursing practice with volunteer patients.

The last few spaces remain for the School’s 14 years and older taster days which will run on Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 July.

Like the mature student event, these have been designed to help delegates gain a fuller understanding of the reality of day to day nursing.

What can we do to keep our bones strong?

Understanding our bones

Weight-bearing exercises include:

• Bone is a living tissue that continues to develop even after we stop growing in height.

• brisk walking

• Our bones reach their maximum density, or become strongest, around the age of 30. After the age of approximately 35, bone strength naturally deteriorates as part of the ageing process. For some people they can eventually become quite fragile and break easily following a minor bump or fall. This condition is known as osteoporosis.

• dancing • tai chi • climbing stairs • jogging • playing tennis or badminton.

• For those at greater risk of falls, a tailored strength and balance exercise class, is a more appropriate form of exercise. These classes include what are known as Otago or postural stability exercises, and can reduce the risk of falls by as much as 50 per cent.

• An estimated 3 million people in the UK have osteoporosis, a condition that is more prevalent in women.

• Women have a higher rate of bone tissue loss than men, particularly because of the menopause.

Vitamin D and calcium

Getting enough exercise?

• About 90 per cent of our vitamin D is normally obtained from sunlight, although it is also found in some foods. We should all aim to get 10–15 minutes of sun exposure to our face and arms without sunscreen around lunchtime, every day, between May to September, taking care not to burn.

• Older adults over the age of 65 are recommended to do 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity a week. This can be anything that makes you feel warmer and breathe slightly harder than usual, and can be done in bouts of ten minutes or more. In addition to this, the Government recommends two weekly sessions of strength and balance exercises, many of which are also weight-bearing and help to maintain strong bones.

• Weight-bearing exercise is one of the best ways to maintain strong bones. This is any kind of physical activity that you do while you’re on your feet, which works your muscles and bones against gravity.

Anyone at risk of not getting enough vitamin D, particularly if they are unable to go outdoors regularly, avoid sunshine or cover up for religious or cultural reasons, should speak to their GP about vitamin D supplements.

• Vitamin D helps our bodies to absorb calcium, a key component of bone tissue, that can be found in milk and dairy foods such as cheese and yoghurt, fortified soya products and canned fish (if you mash in the bones). It is found in lesser amounts in green leafy vegetables, baked beans, lentils, white bread, fortified breakfast cereals and some nuts, such as almonds.

RGU students turn £1 into £13,782 40 groups of second year Management, Accounting and Finance students from Robert Gordon University (RGU) have turned £1 seed capital into an astounding £13,782 in just four weeks through the WildHearts Micro-Tyco challenge.

Micro-Tyco is a fun, fast and furious global business challenge designed to release entrepreneurial talent and inspire the spirit of enterprise in its purest form. It challenges participating teams to turn an initial £1 investment into as much money as possible in just one month, using their creativity, imagination and business skills. Previous Micro-Tyco challenges have seen multinational companies such as Deloitte and Ernst and Young take on schools and SMEs from across the country. In February, Robert Gordon University became the first higher education institute to make Micro-Tyco a compulsory part of its business degrees.

The students took part in the challenge over a 4 week period period, taking their £1 seed capital and generating money through ventures such as commissioning hand-made Chinese decorations and importing them for sale in Scotland; organising a sight-seeing tour of the Highlands for Erasmus Students; selling themed decorations and cards for Mother’s day; and organising charity events, including an Acoustic night at the RGU student Union.

Throughout the competition participants were mentored via on-line videos by some of Scotland’s best business minds including Sir Tom Hunter and Bob Keiller, chief executive officer of Wood Group PSN, plus top entrepreneurs from New York and Australia.

Micro-Tyco’s strong focus on inspiring future business leaders also attracted champions from across Scotland's business sector including the Entrepreneurial Exchange and the SCDI. RGU’s winning team raised £1700, by hosting a race night at Mannofield Squash Club. The

university’s two top teams’ achievements were recognised at the prestigious Entrepreneurial Exchange conference at Gleneagles, where they were congratulated in person by distinguished entrepreneurs including Sir Tom Farmer, the founder of Kwik-Fit, Lord Kirkham CVO, founder of DFS furniture and Bob Keiller.

All money generated by RGU through Micro-Tyco is being invested by WildHearts in Micro-Finance in 21 countries around the globe, taking Micro-Tyco participants on a journey from dynamic wealth creators to global ethical investors. WildHearts believe that by associating business success with helping others, Micro-Tyco will inspire the leaders our world deserves.

Micro-Tyco was introduced into RGU’s Aberdeen Business School curriculum by Dr John Park, Charles P Skene Entrepreneurship Programme Leader, as an authentic entrepreneurial experience and runs in conjunction with RGU’s Business Enterprise Development module, led by module coordinator, Graham Grant, lecturer in entrepreneurship. The success of Micro-Tyco has contributed to WildHearts being taught as a ‘Live Case Study’ at Babson College Massachusetts, the World’s top school for entrepreneurship.
