A note from Sue… I have had a very busy few weeks at the gazette office – lots of catching up to do and as it is getting near my tenth year in business I’m planning a revamp! Well planning will be the operative word as I can’t seem to create any spare time to do the revamping. My weekends and evenings at the moment are taken up with dance. My teacher thought it a good idea to enter “pro-am” – I laughed! But have gone and done it anyway.

I’m busy learning Cha Cha, Two Step and West Coast Swing. Cha Cha must be one of the most technically difficult dances I’ve ever tried! But I’m sure James will get me through it. What I’m trying to say is – you are never too old to learn something new and who knows where it might lead too! For me it’s the bright sparkly lights of Blackpool  For something a little closer to home why not try Scottish Country Dancing – it starts up again in September – and no partner required.

I am looking for a delivery person or two! For the Bredero area and also round by the dance centre please get in touch if this would be of interest.

For those staying at home this summer there is plenty for you to get out and see and do. The traditional Highland Games are pretty much taking up the whole of August; book club at the library; trampolines; tennis; golf; cycling and for those not scared of heights Go Ape at Crathes! Make the most of the good weather whilst you can.

Those with good core muscles might want to join Sue raise funds for the Banchory Stroke Group. Are you available on Wednesday 29th July? See the poster inside the magazine.

Deeside Local Food Festival – Sunday 20th September 2015 The Mixing Bowl Aberdeen is delighted to announce that it is organising the Deeside Local Food Festival on Sunday

20th September from 11am to 3pm at Cults Academy.

At the heart of the festival will be a farmers’ market, where local food producers and sellers will showcase their produce and sell to the public. Alongside the market, there will be talks by the producers, cooking demonstrations and activities to engage children of all ages. There will be hot food to enjoy for lunch including a hog roast by Andrew Gordon, The Lean Butcher, and a variety of refreshments.

We are delighted that local celebrity Craig Wilson, The Kilted Chef, will be with us at this fun family event to demonstrate some delicious dishes.

Banchory Scottish Country Dance Club

Feel like having fun, getting fit and making new friends then come and join us at Banchory Scottish Country dancing.

Perhaps you have danced at school years ago or need to learn a dance for a wedding or maybe you just enjoy the music and the banter.

Our group is very friendly and new people are always given a helping hand.

We learn several

dances every week and there is much good humour as we attempt to master the formation of the dance and try to remember exactly who our partner is.

Speaking of which, you don’t need to bring a partner as you will get to dance with most people as the evening progresses.

We have classes for beginners on Monday evenings at the East Church hall at 8pm.

The first class starts on 7th September.

The Road Runner Running can be a quick and efficient way to lose weight, firm up and live a healthy happy lifestyle. The benefits are numerous and many a word is written extoling these virtues.

What is not so obvious however, is the undeniable pleasure we get from pounding the pavements. Non-running friends will often question the very sanity of our chosen sport. This message is designed to help bridge that gap and open up the magnificent world of running to anyone who might be struggling to get over the initial hurdle.

Professor Tim Noakes describes in his book The Lore of Running, how that once you have survived the first three months, running becomes a habit controlled by the subconscious. At which point running becomes easier and enjoyable. These are two big words in any program of sustained effort, especially in sometimes uncomfortable circumstances of unsociable hours, inclement weather and pushing boundaries. Our good professor goes into the biochemistry and research, but any runner will tell you the same from their own experience.

Yes, you read it right. Running becomes a pleasure in itself and all the associated health benefits, weight loss, etcetera, are now just a bonus and not the primary motivation.

Welcome to the club. Furthermore, says Tim, this “learning” process need never be repeated no matter any duration you do not run, be that months, years or even decades.

It’s a bit like updating an app on your smartphone and almost as easy.

This invitation to the novice runner is to carefully persevere through the first twelve weeks by running as a guest with a club or group, doing nothing too strenuous. Set an easily achievable timetable to run once or

twice a week for about 40 minutes at your own pace. Aligning yourself with other runners will really help to get you out the front door, which is going to be the most difficult part of these sessions. If you can’t find a friend to run with, look up your closest running club, all of which will welcome you with open arms and try out a few sessions before committing to membership. It will be important to focus the pressure on yourself to meet the dates on your running schedule no matter what and then to run at an easy, sustainable pace with absolutely no athletic pressure at all.

The difficulties you may experience during this initial running-in period will be mostly psychological, accented by the occasional bout of stiffness and a few blisters as your body parts get accustomed to the routine.

Useful advice in strengthening your resolve is to constantly remind yourself of these expected difficulties and keep track of the weeks as you count down from twelve.

Proper running shoes are essential and should be purchased from one of the running specific shops and not online. The shop will need to observe your running gait on their treadmill in order to sell you the right shoe. Expect to pay between £85 and £110 for this essential item. A good sports bra and weather appropriate gear will complete your checklist – and the world is your oyster, enjoy it.

Crab and Salmon Fish Cakes with Tartare Sauce Preparation time: 30 minutes + 30 minutes chill-time Cooking time: 30 minutes Serves 2 For the fishcakes 250g/9oz salmon, poached, flaked, bones removed 150g/5oz white crab meat 150g/5oz brown crab meat 1 tbsp good quality mayonnaise Handful fresh flat leaf parsley, chopped Handful fresh dill, chopped 1 red chilli, finely chopped 1 tsp Dijon mustard Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 tbsp olive oil

meat, mayonnaise, parsley, dill, red chilli and Dijon mustard in a bowl.

Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Use your hands to shape portions of the mixture into little balls, then flatten them slightly and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

For the tartare sauce, mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl and season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Set aside.

To cook the fishcakes, heat the oil a large frying pan over a medium-high heat. Fry the fishcakes in the oil for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until goldenbrown and crisp.

Serve with baby potatoes and wilted spinach, drizzled with a little olive oil, and seasoned, to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

For the tartare sauce 4 tbsp good quality mayonnaise 4 small gherkins, finely chopped 1 tbsp capers Handful fresh flat leaf parsley, finely chopped ½ lemon, juice only 1 tsp grated fresh horseradish Sea salt and freshly ground Black pepper Method Preheat the oven to 200C / Gas 6.

Choosing A New Sofa Buying a new sofa is a significant financial purchase. Here are a few pointers to help with your decision: Think about what size is most suitable.

Proportions are important. For example if you have high ceilings a high backed sofa may look better than a low backed style. A huge sofa in a small room can be overbearing and leave little room for other furniture. In some spaces two smaller sofas or a sofa and arm chair combination will be more aesthetically pleasing than one large one.

Consider your comfort when deciding on the overall size too. The height and depth of the seat can make a vast difference. I am relatively short and often find I have to perch near the edge of the seat on some designs in order for my feet to touch the ground. So do try them out.

When considering shape and style you need to decide whether you want to create a relaxed style or a more formal look. Solid backs and styles such as Chesterfields’ are neater and more traditional, whereas loosebacked and corner sofa arrangements are more contemporary. Corner sofas are also ideal for creating a relaxation space within a large open-plan living space and can save space in smaller rooms.

Other differences that can help you decide which style you prefer are arm shape: square, rolled, wide or narrow; the overall line of the sofa, straight or curved; and the design of the legs.

There are many options in terms of upholstery: fabric or leather, plain or patterned. Think about durability in terms of the fabric and the look you are trying to create. Even if you decide on leather you

will probably still have a choice between natural look, a smoother more even finish, or faux leather instead. Fabrics may be cotton-based, velvet and chenille types or microfibre.

Most designers recommend a plain colour for the main sofa and the use of scatter cushions to add a splash of another colour or patterns. Cushions can be changed more easily if you decide the look needs updating in the future.

To aid longevity, choose a sturdy frame with good joinery and springs. You can often get a protective coating applied to your new sofa to help protect against spills too.

Finally many new sofas have extra features such as recliner options or built in audio.

Or you may want a sofa bed. There’s a lot to consider, so don’t make a hasty decision as most of us keep our sofas for many years.

The River Dee Trust is looking for volunteers to help remove invasive plants from our river banks to prevent loss of our native wildlife.

Tackling invasive non-native plants on the River Dee banks – such as Japanese knotweed,

giant hogweed, Himalayan balsam and skunk cabbage - has become a priority because of their impacts on our rivers and native species. The Trust has already had success controlling these species on the Dee from Ballater to the Park Bridge near Drumoak, and also on the Rivers Cowie and Carron down to Stonehaven.

We always seemed to have a lush lawn when I was a child, apart from the summer of 1976 when hosepipes were banned and we all used stand-pipes for weeks.

But nowadays hosepipes are the horticultural equivalent of a bad taste joke: out of style and somewhat frowned upon.

But gardens need water to survive so what can we do?

Well the truth is, we have more than enough water in the UK to sustain an average garden, but it tends to fall in the winter when all the plants are dormant.

A water butt is a simple, economical solution for most urban gardens. Butts will catch the rainwater from your gutter and store it until it’s required. They typically hold between 100 and 300 litres

T-Shirt Tips T-shirts have come a long way from the undergarments they once were. They were introduced by the U.S Navy more than a century ago, and then became a staple item for manual workers. In the 1950s, the T-shirt was popularized in Hollywood by James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause, and Marlon Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire and The Wild One. In the decades that followed, tees became more popular with both men and women.

Today T-shirts are the most commonly purchased men’s clothing item. On average, each American owns about 15 of them, according to a recent survey of 6,000 men and women by trade group Cotton Inc.

So what can we look for on a label that indicates a good quality T-shirt? Look for extra-long-staple cotton, plied yarns, mercerized cotton, combed cotton, Supima cotton, and ring-spun cotton. Those terms generally suggest the cotton will be more durable and more lustrous.

If a tee starts to show signs of deterioration after having been washed according to the care instructions, it could mean the brand isn’t using plied yarns, which are two single yarns twisted together to offer better strength, lustre and uniformity. If a shirt starts to lose its shape or stretch, it could be due to the lack of strength of the seams, insufficient twist in the yarn, or too few stitches per inch.

The Good T-Shirt Guide Before buying: Check the seams, neckband, and hem. They should all lie flat and look smooth.

Pay attention to the shoulder seams. Make sure that they are symmetrical.

Avoid tees with tight or wrinkled underarm seams. This is a sign of poor construction.

Check the weight of the fabric. Unless the T-shirt is of the “tissue tee” sort that’s supposed to be really sheer and meant to layer, women will generally want to be sure that the fabric is heavy enough to conceal their bra. Pull the shirt over your hand to check for transparency.

Look for the most flattering neckline. V-necks flatter large chests, scoop necks elongate the neck, and crew necks enhance small busts.

Who’s for Ice Cream In 1984 President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month! Isn’t that a fab idea? I think the UK should definitely follow suit on this one.

Around 25% of all ice cream sold in the UK is vanilla. As a nation it seems we’re not terribly adventurous. Here are some more frozen facts: The earliest known reference to ice-cream in English was in 1672.

Vhairi Walker Why did you decide to take part in NEOS this year?

I took part this year because I finally felt brave enough too. I have wanted to be involved before, but never had the confidence to showcase my work on its own in this way.

Tell us about what people can expect to see if they come and visit you?

I want to submerge those who come to visit me into my surroundings using my locally taken imagery. From the bigger landscape to the smaller beautiful details that nature has to offer us on a daily basis.

How did you get into photography?

When I was 5 I got my first camera as a Birthday present and was hooked, snapping everything and everyone. In 2009 after working for a large portrait company I decided to go back to college and learn the real skills involved, working with both film and digital processes, graduating from Gray’s School of Art with a B.A in Commercial photography in 2012.

What inspires you and your work?

I’m inspired by the light and how it interacts with the ever changing landscape around me.

I do a lot of walking with my dog and use our adventures to document what we see. From the textures in woodlands and tall silhouettes cast by the trees to flowers and wildlife.

Nature and what it has to offer amazes and intrigues me.

What are the challenges of being a creative person?

For me it is having too many ideas all at once!!! I’ve had to try and rein this in (though difficult) to ensure that I stay focused one project at a time and see it through to completion. l people - local busine loca ss

The Bounty Hunters Modern day metal-detecting When I was a little girl my father bought a cheap metal detector off a friend. It was a weird-looking bit of kit and dad (rather rashly) hinted that we might find buried treasure and become millionaires.

It accompanied us on every holiday and I have happy memories of dad, wearing comical over-size headphones, wandering up and down various beaches, periodically pausing to dig up yet another ring pull or bottle top. We never did find a treasure chest but we did find foreign coins, old pennies, a brooch and once, an engraved wedding ring, which we handed in to the local police station. That was exciting enough to seven-year-old me.

Dad’s metal-detecting was a harmless and somewhat seasonal hobby, but recently I was surprised to learn that modern-day metal detecting is a subject which provokes controversy among archaeologists, the police and landowners.

Most metal detectors admit that becoming rich or finding something of immense value is about the same as winning the lottery.

But it does happen. In 2009 Terry Herbert, who had been metal-detecting for 18 years unearthed what has become known as The Saxon Hoard: the largest collection of Anglo Saxon gold and silver ever seen. Valued at £3 million it is still the most expensive treasure ever found on British soil. Terry did nothing wrong; he informed all the right people and behaved properly throughout his discovery, yet many archaeologists were very unhappy.

Archaeology is a deeply political profession and a very academic one. Archaeologists

feel that the past belongs to everybody; that finds should be in a public collection on display and accessible for study on the internet or in books. They see those who use metal detectors as being very objectorientated while they, the academics, are educated to take a broader view.

Most metal detector enthusiasts do operate legitimately, but some work on the wrong side of the law. Archaeologists call these treasure hunters ‘nighthawks’, because they go out to archaeological sites under cover of darkness to raid them for artefacts, which they can then sell over the internet. They often cause considerable damage in the process.

So does that mean we shouldn’t go out metal-detecting? No, it’s a fun hobby and can be absorbing, exciting and educational.

But there are some rules all enthusiasts should obey.

Do not trespass Adhere strictly to laws concerning protected sites.

Minimise ground disturbance when you dig.

Adhere to the country code (close gates, don’t litter etc.)

Report any finds to the relevant landowner.

Consider joining a metal detecting club – Not only is it fun and sociable, they will have current advice on the conservation and handling of artefacts, and often provide insurance too.
