his is definitely my favourite time of year. The spring bulbs and especially daffodils are undefeated by whatever winter throws at them and pop their heads up once again to welcome that bit of heat in the sun and remind us that summer is just around the corner. Local clubs start their planning for outdoor activities and the longer evenings entice us to leave the latest TV box set unwatched. Among others, Cults Cricket, Tennis, Bowling and Petculter Golf Clubs invite you to try your hand at their respective games and details can be found inside. If you fancy something less active, we have articles from two newcomers to MBC News: Forecourt Art Group and Grampian Woodturners. The Festival team are once again planning ahead and are looking for volunteers to help. If you don’t fancy being too involved but have an idea for an event…let them know! They want your suggestions. I am always impressed by the number of festivals in Aberdeen. In the last few weeks alone, we have had the Jazz Festival, The Dolphin Festival, RGU Film festival and Nuart. Over the coming months you can go along to the May Festival, Look Again or TechFest, with NEOS and True North taking place in September. For a small city, that’s a lot of talent! Included in this issue, is a letter from reader, Dirk Nikodem, who pointed out that my last editorial did not give a balanced view of the bypass construction.

Editorial

I am aware that there are some residents of the MBC area on whom the road has had a negative impact and I have acknowledged and commented on this in past editorials. It was perhaps remiss of me not to mention the negative consequences of the bypass this time but I’m afraid, after such a long wait, the relief of finally driving on a road which is fit for purpose; fit for the volume of traffic; fit for the large lorries and other vehicles using our roads; temporarily blind-sided me. I hope you can excuse this oversight given the circumstances and I would again like to say, I empathise fully with those readers whose lives have been changed or detrimentally affected, to provide (what is in my view) an improvement to the road network. Mr Nikodem also gives his opinion on the wider issues and implications of such building projects and hopes through the raising of these topics to encourage debate and discussion. And as always, we also welcome other readers’ views and comments. I hope we all get the chance to enjoy the spring sunshine and why not consider trying something new? Carol

CULTS BIELDSIDE AND MILLTIMBER COMMUNITY COUNCIL A very great welcome to Jim Smith who volunteered to be coopted on to the CBM Community Council. More volunteers have come forward to fill our remaining vacancies so hopefully we will operate with a full council by the summer. This will allow sharing of tasks and hence a more effective delivery of the CC mission. Regrettably, we will still be without representation from the ‘border’ estates of West Milltimber and Countesswells. Spring-time is outdoor-time so it is a good time to speak about one of the fabulous outdoor assets of our community: The Deeside Way. After a collision reported by a resident last year, the community council has been looking into what can be done to ensure road safety on the path - shared by (dog) walkers, commuting and recreational cyclists, joggers, children, wheelchair users, horse riders and others. Our paper on the matter generated a lively discussion on facebook (and among community councillors) on possible measures and rules. However, subsequent discussions with council officers, the Police and Sustrans (the national walking and cycling charity) put most of the suggestions to rest as: The Deeside Way is not a ‘road’ in terms of the Scottish Road Act and the Highway Code does not necessarily apply The Police have no enforcing powers apart from preventing use by motorized vehicles The City Council cannot issue bylaws as this power is not included in applicable law Sustrans do not feel comfortable with imposing rules on shared paths and

advise that engagement and promotion of understanding between users is more effective. This advice is accepted by the Police and council. In practice, this will limit any possible action to following Sustrans’ advice of engagement and promotion. The current plan is for the council to clean up the existing signs along the path whereas the community council will arrange one or two ‘events’ on the path to further promote the message of understanding between users. My message to all users is, “Please accept that usage of the Deeside Way has increased dramatically over the past decade. Whether you like that development or not, only a sensible and tolerant approach will keep you and others out of harm: be sensible by allowing space and safe passage for other users; be tolerant by accepting that not everybody is as sensible as you are.” Good news regarding the ‘shakkin briggie’; the interesting monument of past engineering that gets too little attention. The CBMCC Heritage Group has finally established that Scottish Water own the river bank at the northern landing of the bridge and the company is planning to create more attractive landscaping of the bridge end. Enhancing or protecting the remains of the actual bridge will have to await a (large) sponsorship. My final subject for this MBC News concerns Health and Social Care Services in our area. Since 2015, your community council has highlighted to authorities the increasing pressure on available services, notably GP services, that would be created by the large number of additional houses

– and hence potential patients – planned for the area. The creation of the Health and Social Care Partnership for the City, in 2016, opened a more direct way for community representatives to communicate our requirements to the planners of these services and we have made full use of this. However, progress made by the NHS and the Partnership has been disappointing: not even the location of the medical facilities that will soon be required in Countesswells has been finalised. Of course, matters are not helped by the general shortage of available medical practitioners in the country and the recent closure of two medical practices in the city. It should be reported that the Partnership has been very active introducing nurse practitioners, link workers and other professionals in surgeries to free up GP time. This is part of a three-year Primary Care Improvement Plan. However, more work is required to convince the Partnership that it is essential to monitor the availability of GP services in the city much more closely and systematically than they are required/allowed to contractually. Unfortunately, this year, the shortage of resources has led to a re-organisation of the above-mentioned Partnership. The revised set-up will strongly reduce the influence that Lower Deeside communities can have on the planning of the services. I deeply regret this development butl assure you that the community council will continue to monitor the availability of local health services closely and will make representations whenever and wherever possible to protect them. Aberdeen City Local Development Plan 2022

The public consultation on the Main Issues Report (MIR) for the 2022 Aberdeen City Local Development Plan (ALDP2022) closes on May 13th, shortly after this issue is due for distribution, so if you wish to put in a comment you just have time to do so. At the time of writing we are hard at work reviewing the large number of proposals by developers put in for consideration in Lower Deeside. As I mentioned in the last issue, we intend to comment on every such proposal even though the city council planners have graded every one of them as “unsuitable” for inclusion in the ALDP. It must be borne in mind that these are the recommendations of officers and are not final decisions which will have to be taken by city councillors. If you can think of others, please get in touch! We expect that developers concerned about business continuity will want to make the case that the proposed housing targets in the Page 6

Strategic Development Plan and the housing allocations in ALDP2022 will be insufficient to meet demand so there will be pressure to get at least some of these proposals included in the final ALDP. Watch this space! The MIR focuses on 12 matters, most of which were developed over the last year in a series of ‘Place Standard’ workshops which involved community councillors and others from across the city. These are: Living in the City Centre; A 24 Hour City; Visitor Attractions; Minimum Internal Space Standards for New Residential Development; Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure; Low and Zero Carbon Generating Technologies and Water Efficiency; Heat Networks; West End Office Area; Inclusive Housing Mix (Housing for the Elderly and Accessible Housing); Residential Care Facilities; Student Accommodation; Houses of Multiple Occupation. While some of these have little immediate relevance to CBM, others relate to ‘future proofing’ the city and improving the quality of the city centre which should be of concern to us all. Many of us will be interested in inclusive housing and residential care. We shall be commenting to the City Council on these matters as appropriate. Meanwhile the normal day to day work of planning goes on and so far this year we have seen 44 applications for Lower Deeside. Most have come from homeowners wishing to extend their existing properties. Here is the latest position on major developments in our area: Contlaw Road – Stewart Milne Group (SM) has now applied for the development of a site on Contlaw Road (OP112 in the Local Development Plan) for 30 homes, of which eight would be affordable. SM has had detailed design discussions with city planners before making the application and has produced a layout which has a lower housing density than would normally be acceptable but is in line with existing properties on Contlaw Road. The workscope would include footpaths around the site and through the woodland to the west of the site as well as play and activity areas. A Community Interest Company with charitable status is being proposed to manage the woodland in the future. Countesswells – the construction of Phase 1 development, around 1260 homes, continues with around 260 now occupied. All four developers are working on the site – Stewart Milne Group, Kirkwood Homes, Barratts and CHAP. Hillcrest Housing Association will also be taking some of the properties. Work has now started on the west access road which will link to Kingswells roundabout and replace the existing C128c and is expected to be complete around end-2019. Discussions continue with the NHS about the provision of a temporary

health facility. The site for the first primary school is ready for construction, and ACC has committed to a summer 2021 completion with a capacity of 400 pupils. No firm offers have yet been received to lease the first retail unit but Countesswells Development Ltd (CDL) still hopes for occupation by this summer. We were critical of a Public Transport Strategy for the development as we felt it wasn’t strategic enough and it was withdrawn. A revised strategy has now been developed and CDL has contracted Stagecoach to provide a 30-minute minibus service linking with Kingswells Park and Ride from where mainline bus services into the city will be available. While this is a good first step, we shall take a close interest in the promised quarterly reviews between CDL and Stagecoach and hope to see a direct city centre service established in due course. Longer-term viability will of course depend upon uptake of the service – Use It or Lose It!. Culterhouse Road – a planning application has been submitted for the development of 11 detached homes on the open land on the right as you turn the sharp bend near East Lodge. The ACC Planners’ decision remains pending. Friarsfield – CALA has purchased the Stewart Milne land at the west end of the development and will submit a new planning application for this in due course. Meanwhile work continues across the site. The construction of the new link road where it crosses Craigton Road caused a few complaints but current feedback is that CALA is managing the crossing to allow residents and walkers safe access. Inchgarth Road Development – this proposed development for 95 homes, a 50-bed care home and retail facilities, as well as a new link road between North Deeside Road and Inchgarth Road, is still pending determination by the City Council. McCarthy & Stone Development at 3 South Avenue, Cults – The planning application 160552 for 21x2-bedroom apartments on the site of the house at 3 South Avenue has been withdrawn following a ruling by the Lands Tribunal. We understand that McCarthy and Stone are no longer interested in pursuing this site. Land behind Bieldside House and Bieldside Lodge – We have established with the City Council that the controls they would apply to construction access using the Deeside Way would make it impracticable to build the new house as originally proposed. However, we understand that another planning application may be in the offing. We shall keep an eye on this to ensure that access to the Deeside Way is protected for the community. Milltimber South – submission of a

We note that Bancon has made a revised proposal in ALDP2022 for 90 homes but without the original commercial/retail development. Oldfold Farm – Milltimber Primary School children and parents were able to review the plans for the new school on 5th February and the planning application has now been submitted. The recently-completed Stoneywood School by the same architect has been taken as the model. We understand that negotiations with convenience store operators for a retail unit as part of the promised ‘community facilities’ have gained little traction because the location is seen to be unattractive to pick up ‘passing trade’. We would be very interested to hear

from Milltimber residents to gauge what the level of support for a local store would be. AWPR – the last remaining section from the A96 to the A947 junction was opened in February and has delivered quick access from Lower Deeside to the North. It also seems to have further reduced the HGV traffic on city roads making these easier to use. Old Mill Inn Maryculter – finally something a little different. You will remember that the Old Mill Inn was badly affected by the infamous Storm Frank floods and the longterm impact is that it cannot be considered for any purpose involving overnight occupation, which rules out a hotel or residential redevelopment. The owner and his advisors are looking at other commercially viable purposes such as a café, bookshop or garden centre. Although the Old Mill is strictly outside our boundary its fate will be of interest to many CBM residents so if you have any innovative thoughts please get in touch! City Centre Masterplan – Status Update March 2019 A number of projects are moving forward and the headlines on these are;

Cllr Boulton is now the chair of Aberdeen 365. Terms and conditions for the use of Broad Street as an event space are being developed. Art Gallery – building works are complete and the fit out work is well advanced. A late autumn 2019 opening is now expected. Schoolhill – Phase 1 of the street remodelling in front of the Art Gallery will begin in June, delayed slightly to avoid disruption at Robert Gordons during year end exams.

Marischal Square – two new letting agreements reached for office space, with Tenaris and Spaces. Around 40% of the space has been let out. Broad Street – work completed. A survey is running until 12 April to gather people’s views on how the scheme is working – over 600 responses received on the Broad Street consultation and more are encouraged. A new lighting scheme for Marischal College has been designed and will be in place for the summer.

Union Terrace Gardens – the project was approved to proceed at the City Council budget meeting and a preferred bidder has been selected; the contract is with them for board approval. The anticipated start date for on-site work is early summer 2019, with a completion date of summer 2021. The initial work will address the new safety railings on Union Street bridge. Music Hall – the building is operating and many events have already been held, some of which have sold out, and more planned. There are some small finishing works to be dealt with. Aberdeen Works – the project has engaged with over 1200 people and nearly 300 have achieved some work or training experience opportunity. North Dee Business Quarter – there have been some changes in ownership and discussions with land and lease owners are going forward – tied to South Dee and inward investment plans. Union Street Improvements – grant awarded for clean up of Scott Sutherland building and another dozen grant applications under review.

Provost Skene’s House – a contract has been awarded to Building Services for construction and fit out. Some people have suggested that Aberdeen & N E Scotland Family History Society centre be incorporated within the building – discussions are planned – and that Andrew McKissock be recognised for his efforts to preserve the building. Nan Shepherd has now been included in the list of notable Aberdonians for Provost Skene House. Aberdeen 365 – an events calendar is to be published and it was suggested that main events, e.g. Cycle Tour, be highlighted separately from local events. Events coming up are Nuart (April), Cycle Tour (May) and Great N E Run (August).

Union Square – awaiting the developer’s decision to proceed with the extension and the associated improvements to the bus station, which are part of the approval conditions. It has been emphasised to ACC that it is important that ACC Planning engage with interested parties to discuss bus station improvements, once the property owner decides to start the work. Indoor market – redevelopment proposals have been submitted by the owner and a planning application submitted for an office-space-led mixed use scheme. Discussions will take place with the owners over the coming weeks. Queen Street development – a project team has been appointed to drive this project forward for

a residential-led mixed use development scheme. There are some difficult aspects of public service delivery to be resolved with the various owners, and discussions are taking place with the relevant parties. Golden Square – plans are on hold until the completion of the City Parking Study and agreement on way forward The Car Parking Study –work was merged with the current study into a roads hierarchy for Aberdeen city. Final reporting is expected in April 2019. Aberdeen Inspired - Adrian Watson provided an update on their activity; although there are budget challenges, the organisation is doing OK and several major events are planned for Aberdeen. Granite Noir took place in February, Nuart is coming 18 -21 April and there will be monthly Inspired Nights on the Green with street food and music. ACC are helping with the funding of a Night Time Events manager and a City Centre manager. Other events coming are; the Cycle Tour 16 May; Great N E Run in August; Comedy festival in October. Aberdeen Inspired also get involved in smartening up Union Street with flowers and promoting keeping streets clean etc. Aberdeen is the only city in Scotland to win the Purple Flag safe streets award for 5 years running and Adrian emphasised the importance of groups working together to keep the city streets safe for the public. Aberdeen Inspired is planning a campaign to keep litter off the streets in the May/June period – citizens need to show by example that dropping litter is not acceptable. Use of Shared Space Areas –concerns have been raised about use of shared spaces by pedestrians and cyclists, in particular the difficulties faced by blind and partially sighted people. There was a good deal of consultation with the Disability Equality Partnership (DEP) over the Broad Street pedestrianisation and it was seen that DEP members had different views e.g. the flat surface with no kerbs suited wheelchair users, whereas it creates difficulties for blind and partially sighted pedestrians. These concerns have been noted and they will be taken into consideration in the design of future shared space areas; the importance of addressing the needs of disabled people at the very early stages of design work was emphasised. News from Councillors Work has recommenced on the build-out of the new link road to the north of Friarsfield Road. The road, scheduled for completion in November 2019, is intended to take pressure off the much used Friarsfield Road. Once completed, paths currently closed for safety reasons can be re-opened. Thank you for your forbearance with the disruption and associated noise. The connection from the Deeside Way onto the footbridge at Milltimber Brae East is progressing well. A temporary diversion has been in place to allow the various stages of construction and will be removed when the bridge is completed. At the recent council budget on 5 March a brown bin charge was deemed necessary to help rebalance the short-fall in grant funding that this council receives from Scottish Government. Coincident with the fall in real-terms grant funding, a significant increase in legal obligations has also been placed on the Council. The brown bin charge will be implemented later this year, but for the moment please continue to put your brown bin(s) out as usual. Households will receive plenty of information and notice of the changes via a leaflet drop advising full details of cost and implementation date, due to happen later this year.

You may have heard that health provision in Aberdeen City is to be reduced to three ‘localities’ from the current four. This is another very important measure to help rebalance the short-fall in grant funding received by this council. Health services should not be adversely affected. To the small minority of Lower-Deeside constituents who are responsible for the increase in dog fouling on our streets, your Councillors can’t stress enough how anti-social and unhygienic it is not to clean up after your pet. When you take your dog for a walk please carry a pet waste bag with you, clean up after your animal and dispose of the waste responsibly. We have received quite a few complaints from concerned constituents. It would be unfortunate if traffic calming measures were deemed necessary to ensure the safety of all. Police Scotland have been made aware of the situation. On a lighter note, the Co-Wheels car club now have three hydrogen-fuelled Toyota Mirai fuelcell powered electric cars available for hire to the general public. This is a first in Scotland. Letter Dear Editor of the MBC News, I was taken aback by the sentiments expressed in your recent editorial – which are incredibly superficial, one-sided and insensitive. While I appreciate that for you personally – and possibly many others – you describe enthusiastically the ”wonderful new bypass (that makes me want to jump up and down, cheering) ...“ but you fail to at least acknowledge that this may not quite be the case for a not insignificant number of residents in our common MBC area, and many others who live along some 30 miles of a polluting, noisy concrete monstrosity – which has destroyed so much of our once beautiful, peaceful area and a number of special natural habitats. I wonder if it will really be worth it for the future of this area and the planet. I can see perceived benefits for some people, such as “easier and faster“ driving, although I doubt whether this new racing track (for some) really means more safety, as you state. I have always felt concern for the traffic problems of the poor residents along Anderson Drive, who have been expected to put up with the crazy, irresponsible and uncontrolled increase in road traffic in the past 50+ years I have lived in Aberdeen, once

beautiful and special. Very few seem to be able to at least question whether the move to a massive motorway-like construction within this former green belt is a solution which the country needs. Very little concern seems to be expressed about the now massive and still uncertain final cost for us, directly the residents of Aberdeen and also Aberdeenshire – and additionally through our national tax contribution. The local BBC reported a total incredible cost of one billion pounds, possibly even up to 1.5 billion! This at a time, when our country cannot afford an adequate health service, properly funded education and decent and dignified social services for the needy and care for the elderly. We have a ‘beautiful road‘ and then an ever-increasing number of disintegrating ‘track roads‘ all over the country, including Aberdeen City and Milltimber. What price do we and nature have to pay for this ‘easier and faster‘ driving, often now over longer distances – sometimes just saving minutes, to do what in our ever so busy modern lives? Former Cults Academy Pupil Turns Tour Pro On the 1st of January this year former Cults Academy pupil Benjamin Henderson turned golf professional and in 2019 will play on tours in the UK and Spain. Benjamin, now 21, hit his first golf shot at the Hazlehead pitch and putt course a few days after his 4th birthday and since that time he hasn’t looked back, having played continuously out of both Deeside GC and Royal Aberdeen GC where he holds membership. A +2 handicapper when he departed the amateur ranks, Benjamin’s career highlights include Boys North East order of merit winner, Deeside GC Club Champion, Numerous Junior Open wins and some solid showings at national level including the Faldo Series and Scottish Amateur. Turning tour pro has been his aspiration since he was a junior and it is his dream to ultimately compete and win on the European and PGA Tours. During the first three months of this year he participated on the Gecko Tour in Spain and secured a 4th place in his first tournament as a professional. Over the subsequent five tournaments he secured enough order of merit points to reach the Tour Final that took place on the Villa Padierna Alferini Course, where he finished 17th place overall and won his first ‘cheque’ as a professional.

Benjamin said, ”I was delighted with my 4th place finish in my first outing as a pro which was followed up with some decent performances including in the Tour final. In 2019 I will play on the Gecko and EuroPro Tours and I am really looking forward to the challenge.” The EuroPro Tour regional qualifying will take place at Cardrona GC in Peebles during the week beginning 1st April. On the 24th and 29th March Benjamin had two hole-in-ones, on the 17th at Royal Aberdeen with an 8-1ron and on the 1st at Deeside with a 9-iron. Benjamin commented, ”I am over the moon. To get two in less than a week was a brilliant surprise”. To help fund his 2019 golfing season he is selling shares in himself at £50 each. Spring News from St Devenick’s Playgroup We have had a busy fun-filled term at playgroup. We have been introducing more natural items into our resources as well as interesting loose bits and bobs such as guttering, tyres, tarpaulin and pallets into our resources. It’s been fascinating watching the children use them in different ways – from using them to pour water, making dens and creating many an imaginative game. We are planning on adding more and more natural and interesting loose bits for the children to play with and look forward to the many directions the children will take them. Huge, huge thanks to our garden heroes, Ian Roberts and Norman Reid, for working on our garden and fixing some maintenance issues. The new coats of paint, new fencing and general tidy has given the garden a new lease of life and it’s wonderful seeing the children enjoying it. Thank you!! We have also been having lots of fun in our Playgroup Secret Garden! The children have been cooking up a treat in the mud kitchen, painting the sheds and walls, making beautiful music with our saucepan percussion, climbing in and out of the tyres, rolling in the grass and exploring their senses

with lots and lots of messy, muddy, watery, sandy, gloopy play! If you are looking for a space for your child, please do come along and visit the playgroup. We are very much focused on the child learning those important skills they need for school such as separating from their parent, mixing with children and developing their social, literacy and numeracy skills, which are all supported by our lovely playleaders. Breastfeeding Support Group Did you know a recent survey showed 75% of Scottish mums who stopped breastfeeding their babies would have liked to have breastfed for longer? La Leche (pronounced Lay-chay) League is a charity that offers women information and support about breastfeeding. They have support groups all over the world, and our local one, La Leche League Aberdeen (LLL Aberdeen) has been running for almost two years. We’d like to tell you a little bit about it! When does the group meet? The group meets twice a month, at the Pop-In, 315 North Deeside Road, Peterculter. There is a general meeting on the 3rd Friday morning of every month, and a meeting for mums who are breastfeeding toddlers on the 1st Friday morning of the month. Meetings run all year round, even in school holidays, from 9.45-11.15am. What to expect at a meeting All pregnant, new and experienced mums are very welcome to our meetings. There are toys for the children and tea, coffee and biscuits for the mums. We all introduce ourselves, and there’s usually a breastfeeding topic to talk about. There’s lots of time to ask questions about any challenges you’re having. Meetings are completely free. You can make a donation if you wish, but it’s entirely voluntary and there is no suggested amount. What makes the group different from all the other breastfeeding groups? Our group has a really wonderful community feel. It’s non-judgemental and based on the fact that mums know their own babies best. That means we don’t offer advice, instead we offer support, and give you information so you can decide yourself what is best for your family. We’re unique in having a topic for discussion and we also have a dedicated Facebook page, and closed discussion group. We have a number of breastfeeding and parenting books at our groups, that we can loan out for free, and lots of information leaflets available for a small price.

Dr Derek Mathieson GP at Cults Medical Group

As many of you may know our much loved and highly respected former senior partner, Dr Derek Mathieson, sadly passed away on the 31st of January this year. Dr Mathieson was born locally in Aberdeen and graduated from Aberdeen University in 1979. He was a medical student at Peterculter Medical Practice with Dr Stuart Duncan and became a GP trainee there in 1982 with Drs Duncan and Miller. He briefly worked as a GP in Forfar before joining Cults Medical Group as a partner in 1984. He worked at Cults throughout his 31-year career until he retired in 2015. During his time, he showed absolute dedication to his patients and many of you will have received care from him over the years.

As a senior tutor at Aberdeen University, Dr Mathieson was committed to ensuring medical students received a full and well rounded experience while on placement at Cults. He was passionate about encouraging and enabling future medical professionals and was always eager to share his experience and extensive knowledge with them. He also shared this knowledge and experience with his son who is now working as a GP in Aberdeen. Dr Mathieson loved sports, particularly golf and football. He was a keen runner and completed four marathons, one in London and three in Edinburgh. He raised thousands of pounds for the Children with Leukaemia charity, thanks in part to the kind sponsorship of many of his patients. We at Cults Medical Group will miss him greatly; he was a much valued mentor to our current GP Partners and all of the staff will miss his wit and wisdom. He was a good friend as well as a doctor to many in Cults and the surrounding areas. Please remember we require a minimum of 8 weeks notice of your holiday to arrange an appointment with the Travel Clinic Nurse to administer any vaccinations you may require. (Please note not all vaccinations are available on the NHS and you may be required to book an appointment at a private travel clinic). Ear syringing is frequently requested at the practice and will now be performed only in rare cases. Ear irrigation is only recommended on the rare occasions where ear drops and bulb syringing has failed to work. Ear syringing can lead to ear infections, perforated ear drum and tinnitus (persistent noise) and therefore it is only performed in exceptional circumstances. If your ears are painful or have fluid coming out of them, or if you have a hole in the ear drum (perforation) or have recently had surgery on your ear you should book an appointment to see the nurse. An information leaflet is available for patients at Reception. There have been slight changes in the way Community Nurses deliver care for housebound patients in the Cults/Peterculter area. Nurses have been realigned to the practices and care will be delivered within a geographical area. This means that although you may be a patient with Peterculter Medical Practice (or other practices) you may receive your care from Cults District Nurses, or vice versa. Cults and Peterculter nurses work very closely together so continuity and standards of care will remain high. Countesswells to Cults Active Woodlands Group

The past few months have been a busy time for the Countesswells to Cults Active Woodlands Group. (CCAWG)

In January, we removed some of the old fencing in Cults Quarry Woods near the skate park. The old bits of wire sticking out of the ground were a risk to walkers, dogs, and wildlife. After a thorough safety talk, a small group of determined volunteers set about cutting, digging up, and rolling into bundles, a significant amount of wire and rabbit wire fencing. Luckily, there was no barbed wire involved. We also removed some larger metal items from the woods that had been there for some time. A council pick-up was arranged well in advance so that the material

removed was not left for too long. Many thanks to all those who came along to help. The scheduled Nest Box Building day in February brought a helping hand from the North East Scotland Biodiversity Partnership (NESBP). This organisation is able to fund small community projects and groups which take action to help wildlife and improve local biodiversity. Their website is currently under re-development, but some basic information about it can be found here: https://www.nesbiodiversity.org.uk The Partnership kindly donated 40 small nest box kits for robins and blue tits, two kestrel boxes, four tawny owl boxes, and six bat boxes to the woodland group. This meant that at our event we could provide the nest box kits free for families to come and build to take home. We have enough kits left to repeat this event in September.

We also spent a very rainy day with Jackie Cumberbirch, Environmental Manager for Forest Enterprise Scotland, putting up the four tawny owl boxes, and two kestrel boxes, and carefully recording their positions in the woods, so that we can monitor them effectively in the future. Many thanks to Jackie, Stuart and Alan for their help with this, it was a long and soggy day! Our hope is that the boxes will be used soon, and we would welcome volunteers to help us monitor them. At the time of writing we are waiting for the six bat boxes to be delivered, and we will be working with the local North East Scotland Bat Group to put these up and monitor their use. We hope the boxes will provide safe roosting sites for local pipistrelle bats. If you are interested in getting involved in any of these activities, please get in touch with me. My contact details are below. Unfortunately, our rhododendron clearing day scheduled for early February had to be postponed due to high winds. Subsequent closures of parts of the woodland at Countesswells, and the road leading to Foggieton Woods Car Park meant that the planned Climate Action day

Simeon News Spring has officially sprung at Simeon. It is always a welcome sight to see our gardener, Mary, back at Simeon after her winter holidays. It’s a sure sign of the lighter days and warmer months. It was so nice one day earlier that we had an impromptu outside concert with entertainment provided by our talented team. We are also enjoying the daffodils and tulips that were planted last year with help from RBS volunteers. I often write about our wonderful international volunteers and at the end of March we attended a civic reception at the Town House to celebrate the achievements of all those who participated in the Nippy Dipper on Boxing Day last year. We also bade farewell to our longest serving volunteer Suri. She joined us from the Republic of Korea just over two years ago and made a wonderful contribution to our community, caring so well for our residents and making life-long friends along the way. Simeon has a Board of Trustees who guide and oversee the governance of Simeon and we are currently looking for new members to become involved. in March was cancelled and replaced with the re-scheduled rhododendron clearing work in Ladyhill Woods. It was amazing what four determined folk achieved in a morning’s work. The path which was starting to get overgrown with rhododendron has now been well cleared. There is plenty more to be done, and further “rhoddy bashing” days will be organised later in the year. This work was made much easier by the bow saws, loppers, gloves, and hi-vis vests that were also donated to the group by NESBP. We are very grateful for the help with this, as it means we no longer have to borrow these tools from the rangers at Aberdeen City Council and the Forestry Commission. We can also share the tools with our friends in the Community Council Footpath Group, so that they can keep local walking tracks and core paths clear of vegetation. I hope to arrange several birdsong walks in the woods over the next few months. Milltimber Scout Group News The Milltimber Scout Group had a great start to 2019 with all sections involved in activities and community events. Our Beavers worked on their Global Issues badge, enjoyed a visit to the SSPCA centre and are preparing for an exciting sleepover at Templars’ Park in early June. The Cubs took part in the District Cub Chess Challenge in March, hosted in the Milltimber Community Building and one of our cubs achieved first place in the 10-year age group. Summer term activities include the District Cub Swimming Gala, ‘Splash’ sailing lessons on Loch of Skene, an evening hike at Crathes and our Cub Camp at Templars’ Park. The Scouts had a great winter weekend at a bunk house in Braemar in February with snow sports at Glenshee and a hike near Braemar. They are also looking forward to a full summer of camping and outdoor activities.

The Mixing Bowl Aberdeen 2019 kicked off with a fabulous fish feast. Alan Mutch, Director of CAMM Fishing Ltd in Fraserburgh, very generously provided the fish and the instruction for our ‘How to Make a Real Cullen Skink’ workshop. As we sampled freshly prepared langoustine and scallops, we learnt to make both the delicious soup and also a halibut dish with a hot smoked salmon cream sauce. The event was incredibly popular, so a second workshop is being planned. In March two Indian Street Food Workshops took place, once again being repeated due to demand. Shilpi, Shobha and Kalpa shared some delicious recipes from India, guiding us to make both savoury vegetable pakoras and sweet gulab jamun. At the end of each evening we were treated to a performance by Desi Scots Bollywood Dancers and even learnt a few moves ourselves. Whether you are a keen cook, complete amateur or are just looking for a fun evening out, we look forward to seeing you at the Mixing Bowl. Milltimber Playgroup News The Easter holidays marked the end of the first term of 2019 at Milltimber Playgroup. It was great to welcome lots of new children to the playgroup during the term and everyone settled in really well. It’s been a busy term with lots of fun activities and learning opportunities, and the children continue to enjoy the outdoor spaces surrounding the community hall and the large range of indoor activities and toys that the playgroup offers. With the mild (but gusty!) weather over the last few months, the children have been making full use of the new park next to the community centre and have been spending lots of time on the playgroup patio, making chalk drawings and eating picnics. Earlier in the term, the children learnt all about Chinese New Year, where they did Chines-themed crafts and learned about Chinese food, including sampling some for their snack. The children also celebrated World Book Day, by bringing their favourite book to discuss with their friends. Easter brought with it huge excitement amongst the children. They decorated Easter cupcakes, made Easter crafts and did an Easter egg hunt. In the lead up to spring, the children have been learning about the changes that animals go through with the seasons: they looked after frogspawn and were amazed when it hatched into tadpoles. They then got to release them into local ponds, to make sure there were no frogs jumping around playgroup over the Easter break! The weather has kept the Forest School children firmly on their toes this term and they have enjoyed seeing how the outdoor environment around them changes week-to-week. As spring approaches, the children who attend the sessions are looking forward to bug hunting, mud pie making and lots of other fun outdoor activities. They have been painting with forest-made paint brushes, making fishing rods, creating clay creatures, making a marble run out of bamboo and using the windy days to test their windmills out. About Milltimber Playgroup and Forest School: We operate from the Milltimber Community Association Hall. In addition to our weekday morning sessions, we also offer an optional lunch club and a wraparound service which transports children to Milltimber School Nursery’s afternoon session if required, providing seamless child care from 0915 to 1535, Monday to Friday. We also offer the wraparound transportation service from Milltimber school morning nursery and lunch club for our Friday afternoon Forest School session, which means child care from 0830 to 1440. Due to the current success of the wraparound service, in the summer term we are looking to offer two additional afternoon sessions on a Tuesday and Thursday. Portlethen Moss Conservation Group SC040350 Over the last 30 years Portlethen Moss has been subjected to extensive development and much of the Moss has now been lost. With the importance of peat as a carbon store being increasingly valued, we felt that every effort should be made to conserve what still remains. Although degraded the Moss is still an active peat bog storing carbon, which would be released into the atmosphere if it was allowed to dry out. The Moss also supports a large range of unique flora and fauna associated with living peat bogs. Our volunteer group formed in 2005 and since then we have worked in partnership with Aberdeenshire Council and its Ranger Service to successfully carry out conservation work and raise awareness of this vulnerable and special area which is now designated as a Local Nature Conservation Site (LNCS). The Moss is now used as an educational tool for schools and groups; Ranger events are held two or three times a year and volunteering opportunities are always available. A second project of our group, on the other side of Portlethen from the Moss, has been the creation of a native community woodland in what was a disused agricultural field. With the help of our local schoolchildren and the wider community, the first tiny trees were planted in 2010. Since then our group has continued to maintain the woodland as it matures and increases in biodiversity year after year. We created a WW1 memorial orchard within the woodland site last year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1. With the help of our local schoolchildren we planted 27 orchard plants, each one to represent the 27 men from our area who died in WW1. There’s a bench in the orchard with a life size wooden sculpture of a WW1 soldier holding a single red poppy. We’ve received many awards for our conservation work on both sites and have been fortunate to receive funding from several sources to cover the cost of items such as noticeboards, seating and play equipment. akamoto Ryoma (1836~1867) is one of the most popular Samurai in Japanese history. He has been the subject of numerous movies, documentaries, novels, and popular histories. The way he lived, and indeed even the Bakumatsu period in which he lived, dramatically speaks to us today. In this lecture we will look at interesting episodes from Ryoma’s life, and the lessons we can draw today in practical wisdom. We will look at how the same man was perceived and portrayed in different ways by different people. We will also look at why Ryoma is in danger of being forgotten in Japan in the next generation. We will see what might have been behind the enormous energy he had to cross over boundaries and catalyze change. The lecture will also include a Calligraphy performance by William Reed featuring Sakamoto Ryoma’s Samurai Signature.

During pregnancy, lower back pain can be experienced as the hormones change to allow softening of the ligaments in preparation for labour. This places a strain on the joints of the lower spine. Later in life, the prevalence of lower back pain is higher in women (53.3%) than men of the same age (30.6%) (http://qims.amegroups.com/article/ view/10221/10921). This is due to the changes women experience during the menopause. (Misra et al). The same study, recomends an exercise programme including aerobic activety, strengthening exercises as well as balance practice for women of menopause age to manage or decrease lower back pain. (https:// www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/ PMC4612559/) An increase in weight is also a factor in lower back pain at this time. Weight gain is mainly due to a lowering of metabolic rate as women simply do not burn as many calories as they did

previously. However, unfortunately, simply exercising more in the same way that you always have and eating less won’t work now. The American Pain Society and American College of Physicians recommend good, specific, physical exercise in order to positively affect lower back pain. Exercise in safe positions, such as lying on your back (supine); exercising pelvic floor, transvers abdominus and multifidus (all core muscles); and performing balance exercises are all recommended. Planning is now underway for the 2019 MBC Festival. We have some great ideas for new and exciting activities, which we hope local residents will enjoy. Cults Cricket Club Looking for new players Cults Cricket Club are on the look out for new players for the 2019 season. The cricket season runs from the end of April to the end of August. Games take place on a Saturday afternoon and our home games are at The Allan Park in Cults. We welcome all new players to the club. Cults Canoe Club Cults Canoe Club is currently restructuring operations due to a decline in local membership and a limited number of instructors and river leaders. We operate under the auspices of a Scottish Canoe Association affiliated club to ensure that participants in our sport enjoy a high quality of instruction and safety. We are endeavouring to offer river trips monthly, on local rivers, for anyone who has received instruction in kayaking or canoeing and wishes to build on their skills and experience. Kit hire is available and membership fees are due from the beginning of April (fees have been reduced to £15 for this year for everyone). Kit hire is £10 per trip and includes boat, paddle, wetsuit, buoyancy aid, cagoule, helmet and spraydeck – everything required for a day on the water. This is significantly less than commercial operators,

and our coaches and river leaders have the same levels of qualifications and experience to those working for companies. Our aim this year is to welcome any newcomers who already have some knowledge and skills (contributions from any qualified and fully registered coaches who have recently moved

into the area would be particularly appreciated). We hope that with a core of enthusiasts, we can offer introductory sessions for beginners again in 2020. Whilst we are a select few, we are a friendly bunch who thoroughly enjoy our sport and look for opportunities to get out there and ‘go with the flow’. Cults Lawn Tennis Club With six all-weather floodlit courts our members are able to play all year round come rain or shine. before we close in mid-September. Nowadays, most bowlers play indoor bowls during the winter. We use the same bowls indoors and out and the rules are the same but, in truth, the games differ in many ways. Indoors, you can be certain of the grass i.e. the width of the track the bowl takes before it swings into the jack. Outdoors, the ‘grass’ varies depending on the weather and the state of the green. You need to make judgements which change as the game wears on. Does it mean that outdoor bowls is more of a challenge? In my view, it is but, let’s face it, indoor bowling keeps you out of the rain. An indoor green is much faster than an outdoor green. Here is a conundrum. On a fast green, a bowl may take 14 seconds to travel from the mat to the jack; on a slower green it may take 10 seconds. Think about it! If in doubt, contact Findlay Baxter whose e-mail address is given below. He will give you a full explanation. But, of course, the best way to find all about the game of bowls is to come and join us. You can always come and have a go and make your mind up later. We will be publicising open days later on but if you drop in any time you will be welcome. There are bowls and equipment you can borrow so all that is needed is your presence! Refurbishment of the Club House The work on our club house is now complete. New blinds, new lighting, new chairs, new oven, new flooring, new …….everything. Much of the work was done by members but, of course, we needed outside contractors for such jobs as replacing the toilets. It has made our club house a pleasant place to be in both for members and visitors. Naturally, during the summer we have no availability for outside lets though we are hosting one of the events at the MBC festival in August. Come September, we will once again be open for outside events. Forecourt Art Group The Forecourt Art Group started around 60+ years ago by a group of professional artists including Eric Auld, Bill Baxter, Bill Ord and Donny Buyers. The amateurs joined later and their President, Alistair Davidson organised exhibitions during the summer at the forecourt of the Langstane Kirk on Union Street. The summer exhibition was held there for many years until the Kirk was sold and a new venue had to be found. It was at that time the two groups parted and the professionals went their own

Grampian Woodturners is a local club which was formed 24 years ago, in 1995. The aim of our club is to provide demonstrations, training to members who are new to this art and spread awareness of woodturning. We are affiliated to the AWGB (Association of Woodturners Great Britain). We meet at St Devenick’s Church Hall, Bieldside at 2pm on the last Sunday of each month (with the exception of December). The meetings normally consist of the demonstration of a project and/or technique by either club members or invited demonstrators, along with a competition of members’ work and club news. Externally, some members are at Crathes Castle stables fortnightly at weekends, between April and November, providing demonstrations to the visiting public. There is also an opportunity for one-to-one training at these sessions. They commence on the Easter weekend, Friday 19th – Monday 22nd April. Thereafter, the next opportunity will be on 4th and 5th May. Annually, at an appropriate venue, a professional woodturner provides a weekend of demonstrations, to illustrate a variety of projects and impart new skills and techniques. The club is open to welcoming both experienced woodturners and complete novices. Those who may wish to join us can come to any club meeting. After quite a few years at the underpass, (enduring this cold wind tunnel) we decided it was time to move indoors and various venues followed including Robert Gordons’ next to the Art Gallery. We now exhibit at the lovely Heritage Hall in Peterculter, from April through to October, on Saturday and Sunday from 2pm to 4pm where vintage teas and home bakes are served. We can also be found taking part in NEOS during September at Blairs Chapel, South Deeside Road. Two current members have been part of this group for many years. Bill Inverarity has been a member for around 45 years and his daughter, Anita Inverarity 33 years. Both artists will have paintings on display and for sale from April 6th in The Culter Heritage Tearooms along with several other artists. Funding Win for Cults Primary School Project Cults Primary School were delighted to hear that their entry into the Aviva Community Fund to create a dedicated kitchen area within the red unit at the school had reached the final judging panel; they were even more delighted when they heard they had been successfully awarded £5,000 to pay for the project. The work to install the kitchen will be completed during the 2019 summer holidays and is a great example of what can be achieved for the benefit of the local community with a little bit of time and effort. The school application was supported by Aberdeen’s only remaining independent insurance broker, H&R Insurance Services, who have been insuring the local community since 1972. Without their support throughout the application process the chances of Cults Primary being successful would have been drastically reduced. Shona Robertson, from H&R Insurance commented, “Teachers are under huge pressure to deliver outstanding results with shrinking budgets. This project will have a positive health and educational impact on children from P1 right up to P7, for many years, which would not be possible without fundraising. Children are our future and they need to be invested in.” Every year Aviva donate over £250,000 towards local community projects. The Cults Primary School project attracted 2,745 votes from the local community; thank you to everyone who supported us. Freia Henery (PTA Chair) and Shona Robertson (H&R Insurance Partner) were delighted to receive the cheque of £5,000 from Phil Bayles (Aviva Managing Director, Intermediaries) on behalf of Cults Primary School.

The Cults Primary School Walking Bus is a first in the Aberdeen area. It is run entirely by volunteers who supervise children walking to school. The service has many benefits to the pupils of the school: it helps to encourage daily exercise; it increases their awareness of road safety; and it helps them understand the environmental benefits of not using the car. We also hope that they will enjoy the social aspect of walking to school with friends. It is additionally beneficial for parents, who may otherwise need to drive their child to school but have other commitments, such as getting to work. The service enables them to drop their child at a prearranged bus stop and go off to work perhaps earlier than usual and without getting caught in the traffic in and around the school area. Obviously, this also helps to reduce traffic congestion and pollution around the school.

There are currently two routes in operation, one from the Abbotshall direction and one as a Park and Stride from Hillview Drive. Following the success of these two routes there are plans to extend the bus service to include additional routes from Bieldside and Quarry Road. The Walking Bus team are currently organising for volunteers to help assist with these walks and the rota admin. The new routes will then be risk assessed and all volunteers will undergo PVG checks and first aid training. The children have so far had reasonably good weather for their walks to school, but there has been the occasional rainy day. The bus service runs whatever the weather and the children have splashed in the puddles regardless! Cults Playgroup News

Despite inclement weather early in the year, the children continue to be keen to play outdoors. There has been much squelching, trampling and digging in our mud patch and often treasure can be found. Puddles in the mud are a favourite – popular investigations are how deep they are and how much water can be dislodged by jumping in! The wood blocks and cut logs are frequently used in imaginative play, and balls, hoops, the trampoline and tricycles used with enthusiasm. Baskets for loose parts have enabled us to expand number and language activities outside. We look forward to warmer weather and spending even more time outside. The indoor playroom is well set up for the children to access toys of their choice. We have been following a theme about ‘Ourselves’ for much of the term. There was great enthusiasm for life size paintings and close observation in a mirror to see what we really look like. The role play area is always popular and has been set up as a family house with busy kitchen, a cafe, a shop and also a hospital. Lots of learning about people in the community who help and care for us. We celebrated Burns Day with a snack of haggis, neeps and tatties, with Scottish music playing in the background. On Valentine’s day the children had an opportunity to discuss their feelings and this led on to talking about their Mum and the making of a special card for Mothering Sunday. World Book Day was celebrated with the children bringing in their favourite stories and dressing up as their favourite book character. At the end of March, we say goodbye to Kathleen, a long-standing member of staff. We thank her for all her hard work over many years and wish her well in all her new pursuits. We will miss her, but look forward to having a new member of staff. The fundraising committee have been really busy and held an extremely successful Burns Night Supper on January 26th. A big thank you to all those who made donations to the event. It was a very good evening.

Rotary Club of Aberdeen Deeside Calendar Girls at HMT, 21 February 2019 Three members of the Rotary Club of Aberdeen Deeside helped with fundraising during the Calendar Girls production performed at HMT, Aberdeen. By selling programmes and CDs before the performance and during the interval and with a bucket collection at the end of the show, RCAD raised nearly £600. Combined with similar efforts by other local Rotary Clubs a magnificent total of £7,317 was raised during the whole of the Aberdeen performances for Bloodwise, formerly Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, which is an established UK cancer charity that has been beating blood cancers since 1960. Primary Schools Quiz, 5 March 2018 Five local primary schools battled it out to go through to the next round of the Rotary Primary Schools Quiz competition. The scores were still level after an exciting tie breaker but Airyhall primary were triumphant winners after a sudden death knockout and will now go on to compete in the area heat of the Rotary District 1010 Competition to be held on Saturday 28th April hosted by Rotary Club of Stonehaven. Gin Tasting Evening, 15 March 2019 About 60 Rotarians, their guests and friends, had a very convivial evening at Kippie Lodge tasting five Scottish gins. The features of the botanicals and flavourings were explained to the tasters by Michelle Walker who also outlined the history of gin. A ‘nearest the bottle’ competition was held for a bottle of American gin, said to be preferred by Donald Trump. A raffle for a liqueur gin and many other prizes completed the evening which raised several hundred pounds for Rotary charities. Euroscolar Feedback, 27 March 2019 This year, RCAD sponsored Cults Academy pupil, Ross Mennie, as a Euroscolar. Ross spent a week in Strasbourg during which a variety of topics were debated by the Euroscolar attendees. Ross gave a brief talk on his experience and thanked the club for supporting him at a club meeting. He was accompanied by his father and David Barnett, the new Cults Academy Head Teacher.

e still don’t own our shed but are continuing to work with the City Council legal team to get there eventually! However, you will already have seen a few changes at our site in the Bush, most obviously the containers where we store donated items – for use, repair or sale in due course. Unfortunately, until we officially own the site and the building, we can’t progress some of our priority tasks, such as providing access for people with disabilities, let alone building a workshop extension which is a longer-term plan! Meantime, our membership continues to grow and now stands at 87. We are meeting three times a week and twelve of our members, who have completed the St Andrews Ambulance Emergency First Aid course, now take ‘shifts’ in pairs as keyholders and supervisors on each of the opening days. We also have interest groups for computing, electronics and woodwork, and we are working on a programme of speakers. However, many members are happy just to come in, get the news, make a coffee and have a chat – and are very welcome to do so! Previous donations have allowed the summer programme to give a good show and all who have contributed are very much appreciated. The process has been rather sporadic however, and a more sustainable approach is needed. To this end it is proposed to introduce an Annual Sponsorship scheme whereby contributors can sign up by direct debit to sponsor a tub, planter or hanging basket on an ongoing basis. In doing so they will be recognized by having a small plaque with their details displayed at the site of their planting. The details may promote a business, individuals or be in memory of past family members or friends. Sponsorships will range from £25 per annum for the smaller tubs to £50 for hanging baskets so should be within the reach of a reasonable number of contributors. There will also be opportunities for additional planters which could be customized to individual locations. Culter In Bloom

Peterculter Medical Practice We have some staff changes to report: the practice is pleased to welcome new colleagues Elaine Walker to our reception team and Zoe Mathers to the practice nursing team. In addition, we have recently welcomed back Fiona Birnie to the secretarial/admin team, and Carol Grant to reception, both of whom bring ample previous experience to their roles.

On 1st March we held our annual social meeting for our donors and supporters in the Heritage Hall, where vice-chairman Sandy Cook gave a review of our work in the past year and we heard an inspiring illustrated talk on ‘Madeira in Bloom’ by Jimmy McCrae from Mains of Drum, our local garden centre.

The practice has recently signed up to a significant new project concerning the earlier identification of older patients with significant health/wellbeing problems, causing a risk of increased frailty. Earlier identification allows for interventions to prevent future crises to be considered and offered. At present, although we and our colleagues in the practice team do our best to pick up signs of concern, sometimes a more concerning crisis is the first presentation of such frailty problems. The project aims to help us be more proactive in identifying potential patients at increased risk. We already work closely with other professionals such as community nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, a community geriatrician and the old age psychiatry team and the new project will build on that joint working.

We hope everyone on Lower Deeside has enjoyed this year’s spring displays of polyanthus and daffodils and we’re now in full planning mode for the summer ‘changeover’ when we remove and save our winter plants and bulbs till next autumn and refresh all our planters with bright summer flowers. In June, in addition to our trusty begonias we’ll include the showy argyranthemum, and some colourful trailing plants to enhance the new self-watering containers on North Deeside Road. We will be adding some new wall-hung planters this year and of course we will be arranging our annual litter pick for all available volunteers - to remove the debris carelessly left on the streets by others. This year it’s Saturday 11 May at 9.30am, meeting at the recycling area as usual. We hope that some of our ‘litter clearance heroes’ will also be willing to help us with clearing and planting tasks too, when the time comes round.

It is never too early to be thinking ahead to any travel immunisation requirements which may need to be planned for the summer holidays. Our practice does offer a travel service, although this requires forward planning. Reception will give you some forms to complete, and the travel nurse then plans your requirements and an appointment is made to discuss and organise these in more detail. Nowadays, there are several private organisations (e.g. pharmacy businesses) which provide an excellent comprehensive travel health service, and these are probably being increasingly used, partly due to the convenience they offer.

ulter’s own ladies’ barbershop chorus enjoyed a weekend of song and laughter at its annual singing retreat in February. The ladies of Albacappella, along with musical director Mike Warner, spent the weekend with renowned singing specialist Monica Funnell, who directs a Manchester-based chorus, Crystal Chords. Monica has been singing in harmony since 1984, and she has sung with many different choruses over the last 35 years, achieving the first of her many gold medals in 1988. Monica is also a certified judge for the Ladies’ Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS) and also performs in quartets. Albacappella, which rehearses every week at St Peter’s Heritage Hall, spent the weekend perfecting four songs which it will perform at the Aberdeen Music Festival this summer. The group, which won the barbershop chorus category at the 2018 Music Festival, is hoping to be much greater in number when it performs in June, having recently welcomed over 20 additional singers following a new year Love to Sing course. Linden Tapper, chairperson, said: “The annual retreat is always fantastic – not just in terms of having a whole weekend to finesse our songs, but also to get to know each other better. We were honoured to have Monica Funnell come along to help us – her expertise really helped us perfect some tricky parts of our songs, and the results sounded beautiful.” “We are looking forward to the Music Festival, which is a great opportunity to hear and see some of the incredible singers and choruses in the area, and it’s an opportunity for our newest members to get their first taste of performing.”

Previously as an Organisation we could give you a list of all the Units in the area, the name and contact details of the Leaders and as an interested parent you could contact the Leaders directly, but now due to our Nationwide “Safe from Harm” Policy we can no longer publish this information.
