elcome to the first issue of MBC News of 2018. As usual, it is full of ideas and activities to beat the winter blues and take us into spring. Claire Cameron, a wildlife photographer shares her love of wildlife, whether she is filming it or not, and encourages us to take notice of the wonder of the many wild animals we have the privilege to live beside. A few of her magnificent images are shown in this issue. With this issue, MBC News also welcomes a new member to the team. Freia Henery has taken over the advertising reins from Fiona and thanks to both ladies, the transition has been very smooth. Some of you may know Freia as she is a familiar face in Cults, being involved with both the Primary and Academy PTAs. Alas, we also have to say goodbye to Fiona, who has been enthusiastic, reliable and a pleasure to work alongside. Not only did Fiona oversee the adverts for almost four years, but she has also been delivering MBC News for eleven! Many thanks to Fiona for her time and effort, and we wish her well for the future. We are also, sadly, losing Maren who has helped Fiona in keeping our advertising thriving. Maren was a valuable member of the team and we wish her all the best. If you are also involved in the delivery of MBC News, please come along to our ‘Thank you’ event to be held at Kirk Hub on Saturday, 24 February. Details can be found in this issue, alongside our request for more delivery volunteers. We hope to see many of you there and if you need any encouragement, there will be some very nice wines on offer, chosen by our very own sommelier. The website serves the Cults Bieldside & Milltimber Community Council (CBMCC), MBC News and the MBC Festival. Regular surfers will have noticed some different layouts and formats being tried out since the turn of the year. This has now settled on the current format. The website is not Facebook and so may not have the immediacy of such social media but does provide information which tends not to change so frequently. Notices of CBMCC meetings are posted on the website including minutes of the meetings and planning reports.Those of you who contribute to or who wish to advertise in MBC News can now submit/upload their contribution and pictures and adverts via the web pages. Deadline dates for copy for MBC News are also posted and you can read the last few issues on line.

Welcome to 2018, a year that promises some interesting local happenings.
F
irstly, we will see the completion of the AWPR, ending a long period of inconvenience, stress and frustration for many of the neighbouring residents and the users of the North Deeside Road. Thanks to all of you for suffering on behalf of us. It will certainly not mean the end of all issues surrounding the new road, such as the unresolved routing of the Deeside Way towards the motorway crossing, but at least the countryside will get a chance to recover from the onslaught. And what will the new traffic flow be? Will the planners be proven correct or will the doubters score? I predict a draw. The expansion of the area in terms of number of homes will not only continue but will probably pick up in strength with all new major developments now in full flow. At times, this may affect traffic between Cults and Kingswells, but hopefully we will see, at least, the start of the new link road from Kirk Brae to Craigton Road this year. Welcome to all new residents of the Cults, Milltimber and Bieldside communities. I suggest you page through this MBC News to appreciate the wealth of recreational and learning activities offered by volunteers in the area. Disappointing news regarding the health services in the area. In spite of continuous lobbying by the community council since 2015, the Health Authorities have not come up with firm plans to expand or assist the local GP services to cope with the new housing developments, before the establishment of new surgery facilities in Countesswells. The latter is planned for mid-2019 at the earliest and it should be expected that during 2018 the hard working and dedicated medical staff in our and neighbouring communities will see an increasing workload. Some measures are introduced that may help GPs e.g. nurse practitioners taking care of some appointments and afternoon home visits, but increasing waiting times could be around the corner. Please be understanding and above all do not waste valuable appointment time by not turning up! Looking back at some of the community council offerings during December 2017, I hope the Carol Concert and the new Chrhistmas lights display helped to get you in a great festive mood and able to cope with the awful weather. Many thanks to the generous sponsors of the lights and to all contributors to the concert, especially to Martin Clarke – leading the community with great confidence – and to yourselves – £432 was donated to the VSA Christmas charity. Finally, with spring-like weather coming up, an early request regarding the use of the railway line path (aka the Deeside Way). This is more or less a repeat of what I said in 2016 but it is still very much applicable: The path is a major recreational and commuting asset for the whole city and beyond and the only way to keep its use enjoyable is by being sensible and tolerant. Cyclists: Do not consider the path a race track. Always use your bell and sound it a good distance before passing pedestrians. Not everyone has the reactive speed of (a fit!) Andy Murray to move to the side lines! Dogwalkers: Keep your dogs under control – they do not understand the meaning of bicycle bells and just need to inspect the latest exciting smells left by other dogs at the other side of the path! Pedestrians in groups: Keep some space for other users to pass, especially when meeting friends walking in the opposite direction. All: Please behave sensibly and be tolerant of people who do not yet understand the meaning of these concepts – there will always be some. Keep enjoying that wonderful facilty through our area. CULTS BIELDSIDE AND MILLTIMBER COMMUNITY COUNCIL Planning Matters! I wonder how you feel about the year 2017? From a Planning perspective the year didn’t offer too many surprises and it reminded us of how optimistic we can be when estimating how long an activity will take – which is generally much longer than initially thought! This is evident in projects across Aberdeen and the delays seen in taking decisions. First an update on the major developments in our area: Countesswells – The construction of Phase 1 development, around 1260 homes, is well under way with around 150 homes built and over 100 occupied so far. We welcome the new residents of Countesswells to our Community Council area. The consortium thinks it will take around 3 years for the first 700 homes to be built. A Primary school is due after 500 homes sold, which could be in 2019. The first access road will be to the Kingswells roundabout, due by the time 400 homes are sold. The road to Jessiefield junction will come after 1000 homes. Both roads have recently received planning permission. The temporary health facility is expected after 500 homes are sold and NHS Grampian is in discussion with the consortium on the location of the facility. Friarsfield – Work is well under way on Phase 2, which will be 109 houses and 12 apartments (phase 1 is 73 homes and 8 apartments). The link road between Kirk Brae and Craigton Road is due by the time 160 houses are sold. CALA recently gained permission to transfer its obligation to build 20 affordable apartments at Friarsfield to a site on King Street, where it will build 26 affordable apartments. Permission was granted because CALA offered more apartments to be delivered sooner in an area of need. The planned apartments at Friarsfield will now be sold privately. We welcome the new residents of the Friarsfield developments to our Community Council area. Stewart Milne Group is developing plans for the completion of Phase 3 at Friarsfield, which will be for 80-100 homes and should complete the overall development. A public exhibition was held in November and the comments raised have been noted. These were mainly about: make paths and cycle ways accessible to all; separate cycle paths from the road; include a mix of housing, bungalows, detached and semi-detached and affordable homes; a link road to take traffic away from Kirk Brae; make it suitable for a bus route and get developer and Aberdeen City Council to negotiate with First Bus and establish a bus service; construct a bus turning circle on site; play areas for young children and teenagers; concerns about increasing demands on school places and medical services; better control of dust and noise during construction; private roads in the development need some means of access control. We’ll see how well these comments are addressed in the detailed planning applications over the next few months. The application from CALA for the additional 26 homes on the eastern end of the site (170307) has been modified, reducing the number of homes proposed to 17, and the application remains under review by ACC Planning. Questions still remain about how the housing fits within the overall approved Page 6
development framework which states a total of 280 homes. Oldfold Farm – Work on Phase 1 for 61 homes continues and a good number of homes are now occupied. We welcome all the new residents to our area. Phase 2 for 166 homes has been approved. The new primary school is due to be available by the time 250–300 homes have been sold. AWPR – The Project team has defended the original traffic assessment for the design of the junction on the A93 to connect to the AWPR which shows a signal controlled junction is better than a roundabout. Now that the permanent traffic lights are operating, albeit on a 3-way rather than a 4-way junction, the traffic congestion at peak times appears to have abated and B979 traffic should reduce once the AWPR is operating. The bridge over the River Dee is completed and we look forward to the overall project finishing and the road being opened later in the spring 2018. McCarthy & Stone Development at 3 South Avenue, Cults – The planning application 160552 for 21 x 2-bedroom apartments on the site of the house at 3 South Avenue which was refused by ACC Planning was granted permission on appeal by the Scottish Reporter. (I suspect he doesn’t feature on too many local residents’ Christmas card lists!) McCarthy & Stone are beginning preparations for work and an application for signs outside the property has been submitted (171523). Inchgarth Road Development – The proposed development of open land between the North Deeside Rd and Inchgarth Rd to the west of Pitfodels Station Rd. has been reassessed and new plans are expected. We believe the development will focus on retirement homes and no sports field is being considered. The development will incorporate a link road between the North Deeside Road and Inchgarth Road which is seen as a key piece of transport infrastructure for Aberdeen. Earlspark Crescent – Council officers have been waiting for details from the landowner and his contractor on the method for access across Council ground to remove trees from the nearby woods. Council Officers have confirmed that the applicant has not been able to provide the information requested and that the applicant is withdrawing the application for a temporary access across Council owned land at Earlspark Crescent and the case file on the matter is now closed. The landowner may come back at a later date with a new request. Aberdeen Local Development Plan – We expect work to begin on the preparation for the next edition of the Local Development Plan in 2018. However this may be impacted by the Scottish Government’s proposals for changes to the Planning System through the Bill introduced in December 2017 and scheduled for review and debate by June 2018. If enacted as it stands, Strategic Development Plans will be dropped, Local Development Plans only updated every 10 years and there will be greater linkage with the National Planning Framework which will incorporate more strategic focus at the regional level. Much consultation was conducted but it is hard to see how it has been incorporated; one feels the cold hand of central government control in all this. If you are interested it would be worth speaking to your MSP on the matter. City Centre Master Plan – The Reference Group established to help provide input to proposals for City Centre Development

CULTS BIELDSIDE AND MILLTIMBER COMMUNITY COUNCIL meets quarterly. The group is chaired by Marie Boulton and has representatives from various city groups including the Civic Forum and the Community Council Forum. Progress continues on the first phase of projects being pursued over the next three years, with £36million committed so far; these include the Art Gallery, Music Hall, Broad Street pedestrianisation and Union Terrace Gardens. There have been a few setbacks in delivery recently with delays to the completion of Broad Street and the opening of the Art Gallery. The problems are being investigated and we should hear more in February. We also hope to see work begin on Union Terrace Gardens during 2018 and hear the outcome of the studies on City Living and Car Parking in Aberdeen in 1Q2018. Students from the North East Scotland College submitted designs for sculptures to be placed in the new Broad Street pedestrian area. Four designs from a short list of eleven were chosen and we hope to see these created and installed during 2018. There were many other good designs and with luck we might see some of these on Aberdeen’s streets too. Aberdeen has improved its offering of events with several successful new ones in 2017. The next event is the Spectra Festival of Light running from 8-11 February 2018. Kingsford Aberdeen Football Stadium – Further documents to support the planning application were submitted in November. The application is due to come before the full Council on 29 January, so hopefully we’ll have a decision by the time you are reading this. Consultations - The Public Consultation on the Review of Community Council Governance including boundary change proposals is under way until 16 February 2018. The details can be found at the Consultation section on the Aberdeen City web site https://consultation.aberdeencity.gov.uk/ There are a few changes to the operations of Community Councils with the main item being the introduction of a complaints procedure, a process for removal of Community Councillors, the minimum age reduced to 16, and numbers of councillors on a Community Council. Our Community Council would be reduced from 18 to 16 members from Oct 2018, at the time of the next elections. It also addresses proposed boundary changes and people will be pleased to hear that the possible change to our western boundary, allocating the area west of the AWPR to Peterculter CC, has been dropped following the feedback we received after the last MBC News edition. We have discussed with Garthdee CC a small addition to our area around the section at the western corner of Pitfodels Station Road and Inchgarth Road, comprising 9 homes there; the section is currently under Garthdee CC and they do not support any change. The application relating to the construction of a property behind Bieldside Lodge next to the Deeside Way (170028) rumbles on with concerns over how the house will be built and use of the Deeside Way for access, transport of equipment and materials. You can see a current list of applications on our website. The Community Council would like residents to know and feel comfortable that they can approach us, either at one of our monthly meetings or outside of a meeting, to discuss their concerns or support for a planning application being made in our area. We listen to all views and the more we hear, the better we are able to fairly represent the community of Cults, Bieldside and Milltimber. Please don’t hesitate to contact the Community Council if you have any questions or concerns about a planning application and would like to place a topic on our meeting agenda. …and the numbers (I know you want to see these) The number of Planning Applications in Cults, Bieldside and Milltimber was lower in 2017 than 2016. There were 158 applications in Lower Deeside (187 in 2016) and we reviewed 128 applications for Cults, Bieldside and Milltimber, slightly less than 2016 when we reviewed 141. News from Councillors Happy New Year!
A
s the winter drags on, the Council are busy prioritizing which of the 560 miles of roads and 1,200 miles of pavements should be treated for snow and ice; a thankless task by any standards. The initial onslaught of wet snow followed by a constant cycle of rain and freezing conditions was significantly different from recent winters and required a change of winter maintenance tactics. Significant quantities of salt were not applied early enough to make a substantial difference to many pavements and some of the less well-used roads. Once ice is bonded to surfaces, applying salt makes little difference. Lessons have hopefully been learnt!! As an aside, all of the yellow grit boxes should now have now been re-filled and if you would like a onetonne bag of salt for helping your community please do order one from the new-look Council website. The 20 mile an hour speed restriction on Gowanbrae Road and Prospecthill Road in Bieldside has provided some relief for these narrow roads that have very limited pavements. Unfortunately, a hard core of drivers still continue to flout the regulations and we appeal to those drivers to exercise
restraint. We would also remind drivers that both roads are restricted to one-way. Whilst we do not advocate a vigilante approach, can I ask that you let us know if you notice any vehicles repeatedly exceeding the speed limit or driving in the wrong direction? Police Scotland and council officers have taken an active interest in these very serious safety issues and will continue to do so. We are pleased to report that Countesswells Crescent and Countesswells Avenue are due to be resurfaced over the period 26 February to 23 March. As previously reported in this newsletter, Council officers continue to monitor the condition of roads affected by AWPR construction traffic. The work to repair affected access roads will be started as soon as confirmation is received that AWPR construction work has been completed. We are told by Transport Scotland that the AWPR is currently scheduled to be opened this winter, i.e. no later than 20 March 2018. As noted in the last edition of MBC News, we are aware that the waste collection has been causing some of you extreme difficulties and we have been working hard to resolve the poor service. The previous implementation of waste management had to be changed to meet future legislative requirements. The reasons for the collection difficulties include insufficient numbers of drivers, new routes developed to optimize the quantity of waste collected by each vehicle and, in
the interests of safety, limited access roads being re-allocated a smaller refuse collection vehicle. The routes have been collated into an automated in-cab based system which is capable of being altered mid-way through the collection route should the need arise. Such is the extent of the collection routes across the city, this process has taken longer than we would have liked. However, we can report that 49% of all collected waste is now being recycled, a considerable increase from the previous 39%. The value of the recycled product is high and, in some cases, exceeds the quality of materials previously separated at source by individual households. The food and garden waste is processed into high quality compost whilst the balance of waste is baled and sent to Sweden for disposal in energy from Waste (EfW) plant. We hope to have our own EfW plant by 2021 which, apart from being ultra clean and meeting current clean air requirements, will generate a considerable amount of electricity and supply networked heat to help alleviate fuel poverty. Good News! Consultation has been ongoing for the Cults Skate-park design adjacent to the Cults Primary School with some future users and Transition Extreme. Because of the difficult soil conditions, only one bid was received to provide an 18m x 10m track, consisting of ten distinct features and formed from pumped concrete over a steel reinforcing mesh. News from Ross Thomson MP I hope that everyone had a peaceful and enjoyable Christmas and New Year. The festive period is always a time to look back and reflect on what has happened over the past 12 months, and to look forward to the challenges and opportunities ahead. 2017 was a very eventful year in politics and certainly since the general election in June, it was a whirlwind for me, personally. Voters returned six Scottish Conservative MPs in north-east Scotland constituencies, including here in Aberdeen South. It is a huge honour to represent this constituency at Westminster and I am working as hard as I possibly can and stand up for this area at every opportunity. The first major issue was working to secure a new package of support for the North Sea oil and gas industry. After months of lobbying, the Chancellor announced, in November’s Budget, the introduction of transferable tax history (TTH); a new policy which Oil and Gas UK says can help unlock upwards of £40bn of investment. This will protect jobs and provide a boost for the industry, our local

economy and the public purse. Looking ahead to the first business of 2018 at Westminster, the final stages of the EU Withdrawal Bill will be debated in the Commons. I believe it is very important that this passes so that we can then provide certainty to businesses, employees and consumers across the country as we exit the EU. The legislation will ensure that we have a fully-functioning statute book on day one after we leave. The Prime Minister has been successful in the negotiations so far, securing agreement on the first stage of talks and the terms of our departure. We are now entering the crucial discussions on what kind of trading relationship we will have with the EU. This government is committed to securing the best possible deal for the whole of the UK, and making the most of the huge opportunities to strike free trade agreements around the world. I will continue to do my utmost to ensure that this area gets the best deal possible – from all levels of government. In the meantime, I wish everyone every success in the year ahead. Countesswells Development Community Orchard
T
he Countesswells developer consortium has taken an innovative approach to the provision of supporting infrastructure and landscaping with the early creation of the central park area – it is worth having a walk around. Footpaths linking the development to the nearby woods at Countesswells and Hazlehead are in place or planned. The Community Council has also talked to the consortium about links to Foggieton woods to the south. In November a community orchard, one of the few in the Aberdeen area, was officially opened on the site by Pamela Warhurst who founded the network Incredible Edible, a voluntary enterprise which encourages people to create community gardens and grow their own fruit and vegetables in urban spaces. Pamela Warhurst has led a community-based movement with 80 groups across the UK which have transformed communities “by planting up the public realm” through creating edible gardens managed for and by the community. Pamela is renowned for her inspirational TED talks on growing food, especially her talk on “how we can eat our landscapes”. (www.ted. com) The orchard, which will boast plum, pear and apple trees, will provide locally and organically grown fruit and herbs that will be grown, cared for and picked by the residents themselves. Plans for allotments are also being considered. Ms Warhurst said: “Creating an edible landscape isn’t just about reinventing a sense of community in the modern world, it’s about learning new skills, giving people an outlet to be creative and get connected with our natural environment. “When we started Incredible Edible, we didn’t ask anyone’s permission to create community gardens, we just did it. People, planners and local authorities are now seeing the multitude of benefits that these spaces can bring and it’s fantastic to see that initiatives like the Countesswells orchard are now being planned as part of new developments. By putting food sites at the heart of a town, everyone can see where their food comes from, be involved and have a sense of purpose.” Allan McGregor, project director at Countesswells, said that: “Countesswells is unlike any other project of its kind and scale in the country. We have a singular vision to create one of the greenest, most community-oriented and attractive places to live in North-east Scotland. The orchard has been constructed using existing stone recovered from the land, including reclaimed stone taken from the old stable buildings that previously occupied the site. By providing residents with a place where they can grow, pick and replant their own food, we’re promoting a sense of community spirit and sustainability from the very outset.” Councillor Martin Greig (Hazlehead/Queens Cross/Countesswells) added: “The community orchard at Countesswells is a worthy initiative and one that Aberdeen City Council is thrilled to support. It’s great to see a development come forward that has the community at its heart with careful consideration to community initiatives from the very beginning. As a result Countesswells residents will have a source of locally grown food available on their doorstep and play a part in literally growing their community.” Other guests at the opening included Carole Baxter of the Beechgrove Garden, who has been providing horticultural advice to the Consortium, and members of the Cults O50 club. Through an innovative HM Treasury guarantee scheme, Countesswells is being brought forward in a unique way; much of the major infrastructure, including roads, drainage, gas, mains and ultrafast broadband, has been installed up-front along with the initial stages of landscaping, open spaces and a playpark. Although it may be a while until we forget the angst of the roadworks and road closures, it is good to see the development taking shape. To date 46 private homes and 85 affordable homes have been built and other house-builders (Kirkwood Homes) have started on site. appy New Year from everyone at St Devenick’s Playgroup! We have had a great start to the year so far. This term we will be having fun with different celebrations and cultural observances such as Burns Night, where we will address the Haggis and have fun dancing to Scottish music. Many of our children have also been very interested in role-playing bear stories so it will be fun to celebrate National Winnie the Pooh day. With being so busy learning about Pancake Day, Chinese New Year, Mothers’ Day and spring, it will be Easter before we know it! We will also be heading down to our Secret Garden to plant vegetables ready to eat later on in the year!
We have welcomed lots of new children into the playgroup this term. It’s lovely watching new children settle in. When children come to our playgroup, from two and a half years old, it is often their first time separating from their parent and we don’t treat that lightly. At St Devenick’s Playgroup, we spend lots of time settling the children to make sure they are happy. Each child gets their own member of staff, their key person, who makes sure the child feels safe and secure and will give them that extra bit of attention. As the staff are all mums, we know that feeling of leaving your child somewhere for the first time very well. So, the child’s key person also builds a relationship with the child’s parent and family and becomes a personal point of contact for them too. If you are looking for a space for your child, please do come along and visit the playgroup. We have a bright hall with lots of toys, an outdoor playground in which the children can play every day. We also have a lovely ‘Secret Garden’ where we spend lots of time as the weather gets warmer. It has a potting area, a mud kitchen, a two-tiered Wendy house and much more. We are very much focused on the child learning the important skills they need for school, such as separating from their parent, mixing with children and learning social skills in a group. All these skills are supported by our lovely playleaders. You can contact us to arrange a visit or just pop in if you pass by. Please see below for our contact details. We will also be having an open day which everyone is welcome to attend on Monday 19 March from 1pm till 2.30pm. Come along with your little one and they can play while you have a cuppa and meet the staff and some of our current parents. We are very happy to announce that Nurse Emily gave birth to a baby girl, Sophie at the beginning of November. Mum and baby are both doing very well and Sophie has already visited us at the surgery. You will have noticed that we have started the process of refurbishing the waiting area. The new seating looks great and we shall soon be replacing the flooring. Check out our art work on the walls which have all been done by the staff themselves. There are lots of flu like symptoms around at the moment so if you are over 65 or in an “at risk” group and have not yet had your flu vaccination, please get in touch with the surgery to arrange an appointment. A ‘fireworks’ thank you from Hillview! We wanted to say a huge thank you to all who came along to this year’s Fireworks evening at Hillview Community Church. We were delighted to welcome so many from the local community to enjoy a little warmth from the roaring bonfire and watch the beautiful display of fireworks. The younger children looked to be enjoying the glow sticks and sparklers too! It was so well attended that we ran out of soup, but we hope everyone that came along enjoyed some refreshments – we’ll need to make extra for next year! We also wanted to say a big thank you to all who gave towards this year’s chosen charity which was the Tearfund South Asia Floods appeal - a fantastic £993.57 was raised on the evening, so thanks to all who contributed to that wonderful cause. Camphill School News January 2018 “Have a care tis frozen over” is a popular line from the traditional nativity play that we perform in Camphill every year and just now it is certainly true, as black ice lies atop the encrusted snow after overnight rain. Notwithstanding, the snow cover definitely helped the Christmas spirit awaken. Last term we saw the afore-mentioned play, a Paradise Play, and enjoyed nativity school endings as well as Christmas Eve celebrations. Prior to this, we enjoyed Advent Sales, when beautiful goods made by co-workers and in craft workshops were made available for our children and young people as an alternative to the hustle and bustle of the Aberdeen shops; we walked in Advent Gardens, had visits from St Nicholas, held a Pudsey Bear Children in Need café (which raised £100.02) and found time to sing carols in our local Sainsbury’s in Cults as we are their local charity of the year. (For regular updates on what is happening, please check our school Facebook page.) Now the Christmas festivities have passed we will be spending time on our emerging capital development plan which encompasses upgrading some of our buildings as well as building new ones. Together with the ongoing development of our workshops and land work, we aim to increase both the number of day attendees and residential places. During the October school holiday, we hosted a visit of the Scottish Government’s Independent Child Care Review team. They were clearly impressed with what they saw and who they met and afterwards wrote: “We found ourselves inspired and very taken with your inclusive approach.” This is, I believe, a very positive endorsement of the work that happens within our school community. Congratulations to Gregor and Callum who sold 90 kg of rice, enough to send a child to school for a year in Malawi. Well done to you both! Simeon House News Simeon House has been full of life over the festive season with many special events and celebrations. We have been blessed with volunteers and special visitors offering their time to our community. Highlights included: carol singing; seasonal quizzes and readings; and a wonderful Christmas Eve celebration and supper. Our international volunteers didn’t let us down this year and participated in the Nippy Dipper for the third year running. Every one of them braved the freezing cold and ran in to the North Sea alongside other fundraisers on Boxing Day, managing to raise over £450! Cults Church Guild meet on Tuesdays in The Kirk Centre to which anyone is welcome. Our meetings are quite informal with talks on a variety of subjects. Meetings are held in the afternoons and evenings on alternative weeks. The programme of events for the forthcoming months until April 2018 is as follows:
1st Cults Brownie Unit turns 70 in March this year and we are keen to share memories of the unit with the 32 girls we currently have. We are asking members of the community who were a Brownie in the unit, or who have had family who were, if they would be able to share any photos or stories that they may have with us. We are also eager to hear from anyone who has volunteered with the unit in any capacity.

The Forgotten Heroes of Cults, Bieldside & Milltimber The Gordon Highlanders recruited men from the North-East of Scotland over a period of 200 years and served all over the world. Over the years, the regiment suffered many casualties and the fallen are rightly commemorated: particularly those who gave their lives during the two world wars. Among the casualties of war however, are also prisoners of war (PoWs): a largely forgotten group. During World War II, there were two occasions when the Gordons were caught up in disastrous events. Firstly, the surrender of the 51st (Highland) Division at St Valery-en-Caux, France, in 1940, involving the 1st and 5th Battalions and, secondly, the fall of Singapore in 1942, involving the 2nd Battalion. After surrender, those who had survived the battle were faced with an uncertain future, totally at the mercy of their captors and forced to do hard labour. In 1940, the British and French armies were totally overwhelmed by the German Blitzkrieg and the majority of the British fell back on Dunkirk where there was the miraculous evacuation of over 300,000 men, including almost 2,000 Gordon Highlanders of the 4th & 6th Battalions. Unfortunately, the 51st (Highland) Division had been placed under French command and were separated from the rest of the British and could not reach Dunkirk. They fell back on the small Normandy town of St Valery where, despite a rescue attempt by the Royal Navy, fog and bad weather prevented their evacuation. Among the local men captured were John Summers and Alexander Brockie, from Cults, and Robert Hastie, from Milltimber.

Robert Hastie had part-trained as an accountant and worked in his family’s business. He was among the first contingent of 150 militiamen, who reported to the Gordon Barracks, on 15 July 1939. Alex Brockie and John Summers were already in the army when war broke out. Robert Hastie and John Summers were forced to spend five long years behind barbed wire in Stalags, Poland but Alex Brockie was luckier. Under the Geneva Convention, he was repatriated in 1943 under a prisoner exchange of those suffering ill health. Alex’s wife gave birth soon after he had been posted to France, so his son was over three years old before he saw him. The men who were captured by the Japanese when Singapore fell faced a very different fate to those captured by the Germans, who complied with the Geneva Convention. Although there were a few Gordon Highlanders who died in German PoW camps, over 300 died in Japanese hands, mainly while building the Thai-Burma Railway, where they suffered from tropical diseases and struggled under the harsh conditions. Among those who died was James Taylor. James, whose father worked at Mains of Countesswells, Bieldside, contracted beriberi, a condition caused by malnutrition, and he died aged just 23 years, on the 19th of June 1943, at Nikki, Thailand. He lies buried at Thanbyuzayat War Cemetery, Myanmar (Burma). James had been called up in November 1939, just after the outbreak of the war. Alexander Kemp, whose wife was working at Wellwood Nursing Home, Cults, was a professional soldier. He enlisted in the Gordon Highlanders in 1927 and had served with the Regiment in Ireland, Aldershot and Gibraltar before being posted to Singapore in 1937. During the battle for Singapore he was injured and captured. He, too, was forced to work on the Thai-Burma Railway but fortunately survived to be liberated, albeit in poor health. The stories of these brave men and many of their brave comrades have been told in two books by Stewart Mitchell entitled, “St Valery And Its Aftermath” and “Scattered Under The Rising Sun”. This included a trip to Aberdeen for Jean Armour and Rabbie via the Gold Bus. No ‘fine pieces’ on the journey though---the urn had broken down. The winter events concluded with a talk from John Dunn and finally a musical evening provided by ladies from the Banchory Singers. The regular Tuesday evenings, where members and friends play whist along with a ‘discussion’ group of men who break off every so often for a game of pool have also finished. As always at the start of the season, we look forward, hoping for a better summer than the previous year. With true Scottish pessimism we do not expect this to happen and our expectations are generally well founded. However, it allows our older members to reminisce about days gone by when the sun blazed down and we never missed a day’s bowling. Regardless of the weather the various competitions both internal to the club and external are in full swing.

I am happy to report that there have been sufficient donations for a full summer programme of bedding plants and hanging baskets for 2018. Any further donations will be kept for 2019. e have another busy year coming up for the Library Service. In February the Granite Noir festival returns to Aberdeen. Between the 23rd and 25th February we will be holding author events and workshops at the Central Library as well as other venues in the City. We will also be teaming up with Aberdeen Climate Action to bring you a series of events during Climate Week North East (16-25th March). Photographing Wildlife Patience, time and luck! This is the key to being able to photograph wildlife. There will be more unsuccessful days than successful, but when a long-awaited image is captured and all the patience has paid off, it is a great feeling! I grew up with an interest in wildlife, inspired by watching TV documentaries by naturalists like David Attenborough but it is only in the last couple of years I have become interested in photography and capturing my own wildlife images. I have spent hours walking through woods, along coastlines and in other locations looking and waiting for wildlife to come to me, so that I can get that one shot! Much of the time wildlife photography depends on luck. There have been many disappointing days when I have managed to capture nothing, but being in the right place at the right time is usually the trick of wildlife photography and sometimes I have been fortunate. One day, walking through woodland I spotted three newly fledged baby tawny owls and their parent high up in the trees. After watching for about an hour, I saw the poor parent being attacked by a gang of song thrushes. Unfortunately, the drama was far too fast for me to capture any photographs, but it was amazing to witness. It is important to have a love for wildlife and in situations like this to be able to stand back and enjoy observing, forgetting about photography. I have also watched and photographed baby grey wagtails from egg to fledgling. I watched and videoed two of the chicks fledge, which was a great experience. I have photographed eight comical jays together. Other creatures I enjoy photographing are deer, otters, red squirrels, pine martens, kingfishers, woodpeckers and many other birds. When I am out looking for wildlife I am now very observant. I have trained myself to recognise bird sounds and can usually identify what kind of bird is singing before seeing it! I am from a musical background and think that this has helped me with listening. I enjoy watching garden birds. Common birds such as starlings are often seen as pests, like locusts demolishing every last piece of bread on the bird table! But when you look at them closely they are beautiful birds, made up of lovely markings, their songs are interesting to listen to and they are hilarious to watch running around and fighting over food! Sometimes a sparrow hawk will visit my garden and allow me to photograph it. An example of allowing nature to come to me! I hope this article has inspired you to be more observant of the amazing creatures surrounding you; stop, look around and listen carefully. Be patient and wait for wildlife to come to you. Milltimber Scout Group News There has been a lot going on in the Milltimber Scout Group over the Winter months. In November, Scouts and Cubs from the Group planted over 2000 bulbs in the area adjacent to the car park of the Milltimber Community Hall as part of our Community Service Project. Hopefully this will brighten up the area when Spring finally returns! Beavers enjoyed the ‘Spooky Walk’ at Templars’ Park at the end of October and Cubs are preparing to enter the District Chess Tournament that will be hosted at the Milltimber Community Hall in February. Scouts took part in the Mission Impossible Night Games at Templars’ Park in December and signed up for Winter Camp in February, staying at a bunk house in Braemar with a day at the Glenshee Ski Centre and hiking in the local area. Our Group Executive Committee organised the successful St Nicholas Fayre in December, with Beavers, Cubs and Scouts helping on the stalls and arranged our Burns Supper and Ceilidh in January, always a popular and lively event! Finally, we will be holding our Annual Jumble Sale at Cults Academy on Saturday 24th March with all proceeds used towards running our group. Many thanks to our Executive Committee, Leaders, Young Leaders and helpers who have made the group successful and we are all looking forward to another exciting year in 2018! Milltimber Playgroup News
I
t’s been another busy and exciting term for us here at Milltimber Playgroup and we would like to wish everyone in the community a happy and healthy New Year. We’ve welcomed back a lot of returning families as well as greeting some new faces, and an exciting term lies ahead. Looking back, there have been lots of fun activities and the children have had the opportunity to enjoy the outdoor spaces surrounding the community hall and the large range of indoor activities and toys that the playgroup offers. October saw us host our annual ‘Spooktacular’ fireworks fundraising event at the playgroup which was attended by over 200 people and included games, activities and an amazing fireworks display which was enjoyed by everyone. The playgroup relies on contributions from parents and fundraising in the local community, so a huge thank you to everyone for your support in making this event a massive success. This term at playgroup the children have been busy playing and learning. We had a visit from Child Smile who spoke to the children about the importance of brushing their teeth. There was also lots of excitement in the run up to Christmas. We’ve had a lot of fun dressing up differently to normal, with a Christmas jumper day and (at the children’s request!) a pyjama day. On the last day of term, we held a Christmas party for all the families to attend. This included a surprise visit from Santa and all the children got the opportunity to visit him in his grotto and receive a gift. We also held a ‘reverse advent calendar’ collection for Instant Neighbour, providing groceries to those in need over the festive period. With the turning of the seasons from autumn to winter, the children who attend our Wednesday and Friday Forest Club sessions have been drilling conkers and making animal necklaces and puppets outside in the fresh air. The children have also been enjoying the snowy weather and lots of fun has been had building snowmen, making snow angels and sledging.
Following consultation with the Play Areas Department from Aberdeen City Council, local residents and attendees of the playgroup, a decision has now been made on plans for the new playpark next to the community hall. This is a really exciting development which will massively benefit children from the playgroup and surrounding communities for many years to come. About Milltimber Playgroup and Forest School: We operate from the Milltimber Community Association Hall. In addition to our weekday morning sessions, we also offer an optional lunch club and a wraparound service which transports children to Milltimber School Nursery’s afternoon session if required, providing seamless child care from 0915 to 1535, Monday to Friday. We also offer the wrap around transportation service from Milltimber school morning nursery and lunch club for our Friday afternoon Forest School session, which means child care from 0830 to 1440. There is currently space in some sessions. Milltimber School PTA Update…
A
s we enter 2018, Milltimber PTA have had a very successful year raising an incredible £19,060. This has meant we have been able to provide the funding for much needed equipment for the school. Since summer, we have provided white boards for each classroom, a paper cutter, magnetic boards, an upgrade to the library system and more. We are very proud of the projector installed in the main hall which has been a welcome addition to the building. We enjoyed a very popular Christmas Fayre in November, raising over £2,500. Mr and Mrs Claus made a welcome appearance and there was a wide range of stalls offering lots of great gift ideas for Christmas presents. It was a perfect way to kick off the festive season. Very special thanks to those in charge of organising and, as always, to Kippie Lodge who provided the mince pies. Thanks to Jan Williams, our annual raffle raised a fantastic amount and we also tried out a new fundraising event. Our class tea towels proved to be a very successful venture! The tea towels went on sale at the end of last year and now have pride of place in homes throughout Milltimber! Our annual quiz night takes place on Saturday 3rd March 2018 and this is an event not to be missed. Tickets will go on sale shortly. Finally, a big shout out to all Milltimber School parents – while we have had an incredibly successful year, many of our PTA members are due to step down in February having served their time on the committee. Therefore, we are looking for an injection of new faces to continue the fundraising efforts. Upcoming Events at The Mixing Bowl Aberdeen The Mixing Bowl is a community-led food interest group that is open to everyone and meets monthly for talks, tastings, demonstrations and workshops. The group also organises the annual Deeside Local Food Festival. The Raw Chocolate making demonstration in October was very interesting. We learned about the benefits of raw cacao and how simple it is to make delicious treats that are good for you and contain no refined sugar. In November, the Mixing Bowl ran a Quiz Night at Cults Bowling Club to raise funds for next year’s Deeside Local Food Festival. It really was an enjoyable community event with homemade stovies served at half time to keep the energy levels up! Our Christmas cake decorating workshop in December provided all the knowledge needed to create a masterpiece from covering the cake with marzipan and icing through to decorating it with hand-made, miniature, icing penguins and trees. We would like to say a big thank you to the many guests who have shared their passion at the Mixing Bowl and, also, to all who have attended our events throughout the year. A
Happy New Year from everyone at Cults Playgroup. We hope you all enjoyed the Christmas festivities. Last term at playgroup was full of special days and celebrations. Halloween saw some of the children helping to dig out the inside of a pumpkin and then create a face, doing ‘spooky’ art and craft, dressing up and bobbing for apples. On November 6th there was a discussion about how to stay safe with fireworks and some spectacular art creations. Book Week Scotland, from 27 November to 1st December, allowed the children to bring in their favourite books from home. We focused on several modern popular stories. The mouse from ‘The Gruffalo’ had a leylandii wood with fellow animals, fox, owl and snake. Our toy ‘Gruffalo’ watched while the children ate ‘scrambled snake’ (egg) and ‘Gruffalo crumble’ (apple and blackberry) for snack. Our second focus was ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’. It enabled the children to set up a role play kitchen, serve meals and have a cuddle with a very friendly toy tiger. Each child made their own sandwich for snack and enjoyed eating it. Our last focus was the book ‘Aliens Love Underpants’. It led to a multitude of painted and decorated fancy pants! During December there was much enthusiasm on the theme of Christmas. The role play area was set up as a house with a Christmas tree, ready to be newly decorated every day! The making of Christmas cards led on to a post box, post office and postmen’s outfits and discussions about Christmas cards and why we send them. A wide variety of art and craft activities used large quantities of glitter and brightly coloured paints. Trees, stockings and glittery stained-glass windows were hung around the room. The children enjoyed doing hand printed decorations for a tree in the Cults Parish Church ‘Christmas Tree Festival’. It was also fun to dress the tree, and finally visit the church to see all the trees fully decorated. The end of term finished with a party and ‘Sing-Along’ concert for parents, carers and friends. In amongst all these activities we have continued to use the garden despite the colder weather. The snow brought renewed excitement about going outside. On one occasion snowmen were built and on another all the toy diggers and dumpers were out clearing snowy areas to see what was underneath. For those who were less keen to venture into the cold, Christmas music led to dancing and lots of games of musical statues and bumps. The playgroup committee look forward to hosting the ever popular ‘Burns Night Supper’ on 27th January 2018. Tickets are still available if you want a Scottish themed night and lots of fun. Cults Playgroup runs each morning of the week in the North Hall, Quarry Road, from 9am until 12.10pm. hanks to everyone in the community who attended the Cults Academy Parent Teacher Association Gift Fair on November 23rd and a special thanks to the volunteers and pupils for making it a great success, serving refreshments, selling tickets and raffle tickets and performing seasonal music. Thanks to all the talented stallholders for their support too. The event raised a terrific £2,100 for the school that will go towards purchasing additional teaching resources, equipment for extracurricular activities and Sports Day. The PTA are very pleased to announce the launch of their Facebook Page in conjunction with the Cults Academy Parent Council. elcome to our PTA update in the MBC News! January marks the end of the first year with the current committee so it’s a good time to reflect on our past fundraisers as we start planning for 2018. First of all, a big thank you to the committee, to all our wonderful parent volunteers that we cannot do without and for all the donations that come in from local businesses and the support from the surrounding community. So very much appreciated!
We started 2017 with our Spring Raffle and delighted one parent with £1,000 to spend at John Lewis! The PTA hosted four discos for the kids and we had two very successful Bag2School collections this year too. The Summer Fair was blessed with great weather so nearly 1,500 people from the community came out for some food, games, bouncy castles and much more. The 200 Club was a sell-out this school year so ten lucky winners will receive cheques for £100 by the end of June. Lots of families came out for the Santa Fun Run and warmed up with hot chocolate and mince pies afterwards. Our last fundraiser of 2017 was a terrific Ladies’ Night at Kippie Lodge full of fun, fizz and dancing, with beautiful gift stalls and stunning raffle prizes which raised a lot for the school and a donation was made to local charity Kayleigh’s Wee Stars. A great time was had by all who braved the snow that night!
The next fundraising event will be a Spring Ceilidh to be held on March 24th at Kippie Lodge, guaranteed to be great fun with stovies, live music & dancing. Watch our Facebook Page for more details of this and the ever popular Quiz Night coming up in May. Cults Academy PTA Facebook @CultsAcademyPTA
The PTA have a number of ongoing fundraisers too including easyfundraising.org.uk, name labels from My Nametags, Stikins and Stamptastic, Empties Please battery and ink cartridge recycling, Scholastic Books, Christmas cards and cashback schemes by The Bow Fairy and H&R Insurance. All funds raised in 2017 will go towards funding laptops and charging cart, a projector and ceiling-mounted screen, netball strips, football field repairs, playground improvements, library books and hopefully some new iPads too. Money well spent! Our next Bag2School clothing collection will take place in May so do keep us in mind if you are doing some clearing out this Spring. The hugely popular Summer Fair will be on June 9th this year and, as always, we’ll be looking for raffle and tombola prizes so please get in touch if you’d like to contribute.

Aberdeen Saints Croquet Club (ASCC) Aberdeen Saints Croquet Club was established in 2017 by five players who had played informally in 2016. The objective was to provide croquet for residents of Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. We expect
to start the 2018 season with 17 players, and to build membership year on year. Croquet has been played in the NorthEast of Scotland for many years with clubs, formal and informal, in places like Maud, with their club, Monquhitter (Cuminestown), and Udny with The Udny Farmers. Crathes Castle lawn has been, and still is, a popular venue. Charles Henderson, founder Captain of this club, has been a regular player at Crathes for over 30 years. The Saints play at Crathes, courtesy of National Trust for Scotland, and at Old Torry Outdoor Sports Centre, courtesy of Sport Aberdeen. Our playing times are: Old Torry: Tuesday and Thursday, 5.30pm – 9pm; Sunday, 1pm – 4.30pm. Crathes: Monday and Wednesday, 5.30pm – 9pm; Saturday, 1pm – 4.30pm. There is an open invitation to guests and visitors to join us for a game. We welcome players who want to play either competitively or socially. Coaching is provided for players of varying levels. We have a Coaching Programme and we also have “guest coaches” on a regular basis. There is great enthusiasm amongst our players. Many members, including our secretary, Pam Rotheroe-Hay are
experienced in organising events and are happy to arrange croquet sessions for business organisations, social clubs and others. Croquet can be an excellent mechanism for team building and is also an ideal, different and value for money way of spending time with colleagues and friends. What is Croquet? It is a ball game of skill and strategy where male and female players can compete on equal terms. There are several variations of the game. The Association of Scottish Croquet Clubs focuses primarily on Association Croquet which is the full version of the sport, and we also play golf croquet. A handicap system allows inexperienced players to play experienced players, even experts, on equal terms. How to get involved Aberdeen Saints welcome new members, whether you are experienced or a beginner wanting to try out the game. Active Schools Active Schools in Cults works with a number of Community Sports clubs and coaches, to deliver extracurricular and curricular physical activity opportunities. A long-standing link has existed with coaches from Aberdeen District Table Tennis Association and during terms 1 and 2, extracurricular P4-7 table tennis classes took place at Cults Sports Complex and Peterculter Sports Centre. Community clubs play an important role in furthering the coaching opportunities for children and young people who want to take sports a bit further. During term 2, Sooyang Do delivered some taster sessions to the primaries, and in term 3 we have a link for curricular sessions with Peterculter Golf Club, Aberdeen Badminton Academy and Aberdeenshire Cricket Club, which we are looking forward to. With just over 140 participants representing more than 30 family groups, the event was considered a huge success! Family groups were able to run/jog/walk round the 1km course marked out in Foggieton Woods, as many times as they felt they could do. Some groups did one lap and some did eight laps! It was a fantastic afternoon of exercise and activity and it was great to see so many people participating as a family. All participants took home a medal and certificate, and we hope to be able to offer this free event again as part of the 2018 MBC Festival. hanks to our six fantastic all weather floodlit courts, members at Cults Tennis Club have been able to brave the elements and carry on playing tennis throughout the winter months. Even off-season, we have a packed schedule for our members with coaching, box leagues, adult and junior evening match play and social play on Saturday & Sunday afternoons and Tuesday & Thursday mornings. The juniors have had great fun at some of their coaching sessions surrounded by snow, which came just after they had a fantastic evening at the club’s Junior Ski Night at Garthdee. Speaking of our junior members; congratulations to Jason Mathie who ended 2017 by winning the Boys 18 & under singles group at the Stewart Milne Group Indoor Tennis tournament at Westburn Park in December. If you or your children would like to follow in Jason’s footsteps, Cults Tennis Club offers a comprehensive coaching programme for all ages and abilities, full details can be found on the club website: www.cultstennisaberdeen.co.uk or by contacting our head coach Gareth Rennie. As we head into spring, the committee are busy making plans for the new season starting on March 1st, 2018. We shall be officially opening the summer season with a tournament in March for all members as well as hosting an Open Day where everyone is welcome to come along and see what Cults Tennis Club is all about. We are in the process of entering the club in: the Scottish Inter Club tournament; the local competitive league (we had six men’s and four ladies’ teams in 2017); local ladies and mixed doubles social leagues; as well as adult and junior tournaments. Of course, we will also be arranging some more fun social events for adults and juniors. All details will be on the website as soon as we have confirmed them. No matter what your ability, if you are interested in playing tennis you are welcome to join us. he ‘flu vaccine campaign at the practice enjoyed another successful year with good uptake; the Saturday morning clinics again proving as popular (and busy!) as ever. It has been a tough December and January however as a flu-like viral illness has taken hold across the country, and we have certainly seen many cases of this in our area. Our partner colleague, Dr Stuart McMain, has left the practice after 11 years with us here – we thank him for his hard work with the practice and wish him all the best for the future. His expertise in orthopaedic & musculoskeletal medicine was especially appreciated, and he did much to develop undergraduate medical teaching at the practice. The partners are working on recruitment now and we shall update you when possible with further news. Mrs Norma Dickson left the practice nursing team in January after almost three years with us, many of you will have encountered her cheerful approach and steady hand in the treatment room! Please note that the practice will be closed for team education/training on the afternoons of Wednesday 14th February and Wednesday 14th March, with emergency cover provided by NHS24 (telephone 111) and GMED. These are regular training afternoons where the practice medical and administrative staff can have protected time to engage in educational activities and planning of service developments, ultimately with improvements in mind. Community paths project news Cults Bieldside and Milltimber Community Council would like to thank everyone who helped us with our community path project, especially all the folk who turned up for our volunteer days at Foggieton Woods and at Cults Station on the Deeside Way. On Saturday 11 November, we were lucky to have a fine sunny day for thinning out birch and spruce regeneration at Foggieton, with direction and guidance from Forestry Ranger, Neil Taylor. The three areas we thinned out will help increase diversity of habitat and improve views from the path, as well as helping to keep the path open and allowing the sun in to dry the surface. On 22nd November and 3rd December, we tidied up the Deeside Way around Cults Station, cutting back overgrown vegetation, and working on the access paths to improve drainage, under the direction of Countryside Ranger, Duncan McNeill. Thank you to all who wielded saws, loppers, secateurs, spades and shovels, and pushed barrows to move three tons of aggregate and gravel. All our willing and cheerful volunteers joined in the work with enthusiasm and humour, despite the rainy weather on 22 November, and we are grateful for all their support, and for all the help and guidance from rangers Neil and Duncan. The funding we received, from Scottish charity Paths for All, helped to buy the materials for the path repairs but most of the grant has been used to produce a leaflet guide to “Walks round Cults”, and provide waymarkers to signpost the six routes it describes. Look out for the waymarkers appearing soon, and the leaflet which will be available in Cults library and other outlets. The leaflets will not be priced but we hope people will make small donations for them, which will help us to carry out more path maintenance. We are very grateful to Claire Cameron, facebook.com/clairecameronphotography, and Ian Taggart, Bon Accord Camera Club, for kindly permitting us to use their beautiful wildlife photographs to illustrate and enhance the leaflet. The aims of Paths for All are to encourage more people to get active outdoors and get involved with their community. Our volunteers were certainly very active outdoors and contributed their time and energy to the community paths. We hope their example will inspire more of you to come along to future volunteer sessions and continue the work we have begun. What’s On Locally As I’m writing this, Storm Eleanor is coming through! What with that and all the ice we have had in the area for weeks, we’ve had a tough winter! We are very lucky to have active Rainbow, Brownie and Guide Units in the Milltimber and Cults area. This is due to the hard work and dedication of all the Leaders. Previously as an Organisation we could give you a list of all the Units in the area, the name and contact details of the Leaders and as an interested parent you could contact the Leaders directly, but now due to our Nationwide “Safe from Harm” Policy we can no longer publish this information. We now have a Website that you can visit and register an interest for the age group you want a place in for your daughter. It is a simple procedure and once you have registered, a Guider should be in touch within 3 weeks to say if there are places available or if your daughter will be placed on the waiting list. You will be asked to put in your Postcode, the type of Unit you are interested in and if there are more than 1 suitable Unit you will be asked to put your 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice.

Walk at Bieldside Introduction
The walk for this issue of MBC News is a short route at Newton Dee in Bieldside, mainly on tracks and paths but starting and finishing on a narrow tarmac road used by vehicles. Care is required on this section as there are no pavements.
Start and Finish Point
Old Ferry Road in Bieldside, signposted “Newton Dee”. Parking is available in an unmarked lay-by on the North Deeside Road, about 50 metres beyond the turning on to Old Ferry Road. The route is also accessible from the Deeside Way, so the walk can be extended by including a section of the Deeside Way to approach it either from Cults or Milltimber.
Footpath Details Grade: Easy Terrain Description: mix of tarmac roadway used by vehicles, unsurfaced track and paths, which can be muddy after wet weather. Some easy gradients. Distance: about a mile, but the walk can be extended by including part of the Deeside Way, or by going down to the river and back before going through the gate leading to the path round the farm. Time: about half an hour

Go down Old Ferry Road, past the entrance to Newton Dee Shop and Cafe, until you reach a small roundabout. Go straight ahead here on an unsignposted, unsurfaced track leading down towards the River Dee. Continue on the track through woods until just before it reaches open land, where a gate on your left leads to a path rising through the woods with views over the golf course. You may see roe deer here. Follow the path round, skirting the farm on your left, until you reach a tarmac roadway, with small fields on either side, with chickens and pigs. Continue on the road which goes up, through a residential area, towards the Deeside Way. At a couple of junctions on the way up, there are footpaths enabling you to get off the road. When you reach the Deeside Way, you can either walk along it to reach the Old Ferry Road and your starting point, or you can go up Golf Road, which leads from the Golf Club up to the North Deeside Road.
