Introducing local people to local businesses since 2005!

The winners of the Art Show competition were : Edward Zanre and Graeme Murray The Art Fair was a great success in their new venue the Beach Ballroom and are already looking forward to next year’s event. The biggest excitement of this last two months was my sister got married. It was a fabulous day celebrating with family and friends from far and wide. The Chester Hotel was a fantastic venue and the food was excellent. Wonderland the band were amazing and I danced the night away - very happy! I have started the Gift Guide to help you see what you can buy locally. It is so important to support our local shops because if we don’t then they will all go and we’ll be left with shopping malls. By shopping locally you are supporting somebody local - who is usually sourcing local materials and suppliers. You may get a big surprise that they are not as “expensive” as you would think and you will get something that little bit different, served by a real person and might even get the present gift wrapped! So think about it before you switch on your computer and click on Amazon! Go grab that cuppa and enjoy the magazine. Until the next time… Sue 27 January | West End 2 | Kingswells (Feb-Mar) 27 February| West End 1 (Mar-Apr) 27 March | West End 2 | Kingswells (Apr-May) 27 April| West End 1 (June-July)

Firework fiestas! Top tips for making your fireworks party go off with a bang… Food and decorations A warming autumnal soup is sure to go down well with guests, and mini sparklers are a great way to liven up sandwiches. For pudding, you could decorate cakes with coloured icing in the shape of fireworks or rockets, and don’t forget the toffee apples! To make an easy firework rocket, roll a rectangle of coloured card into a tube and stick in place with double sided tape. Cut out a circle of card, with a wedge missing, roll and tape to make a cone for the top. Stick it on and attach a wooden barbeque skewer (with the point cut off ) to the inside of the tube. Fill the tube with sweets, close the bottom with a circle of card, and glue on some paper streamers. Display several in a tall glass vase. Decorate the table with layers of coloured tissue paper in red, yellow and orange, rather than a table cloth, and string party lights around the walls. You could also try attaching streamers to colourful paper lanterns to hang from the ceiling. Drinks Hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows is sure to prove popular with children and drivers. You could also make a warming alcoholic drink for adults, such as mulled wine, liqueur coffee or hot toddy. Games If you have children coming, why not keep them busy making a Guy? You’ll need to provide plenty of old material, plus stuffing. You could also pre-make a papier-mâché head using paper, glue and balloons, or buy it from a craft store or eBay. Alternatively, you could have a Guy making competition, where everyone makes a smaller Guy, or decorates a gingerbread man, with a prize for the winner. Kids and adults alike love a piñata, and you can buy them in a variety of shapes. Fill yours with sweets or small treats, such as stickers and balloons, and hang it outside from a tree. Make sure you give whoever’s swinging the stick plenty of space! Fireworks Most people will want to watch the fireworks from outside, so you might want to dig out some spare blankets, gloves and hats for anyone who isn’t prepared. If you’re setting off your own fireworks, take time to explain the danger to children, and make it clear how far back they need to stand. You’ll also want to ensure that any pets are safely inside. Of course, it’s safer and cheaper to take advantage of a nearby firework display. They can be seen for miles, so you may well be able to stay in your own garden, avoid the crowds and make the most of those warming drinks... By Kate Duggan

The Granite City Guerrillas The Granite City Guerrillas are Aberdeen’s leading dodgeball club, having been established since 2012. The club has grown from strength to strength in 2016, expanding from around 12 players to regular weekly sessions in excess of 40 people, including both male and females. The club, initially set up by Jason McGill as a means for catching up with friends, has developed into winning the Scottish Dodgeball Championship annually since 2013 and having regularly competed in the UK Championships with the best dodgeball teams across the UK. Their team includes one international dodgeball player, Pete Watt, and the club are hopeful for more players to break into the national team over the coming year. The Guerrillas see theirselves as an alternative sport to the mainstream football or rugby teams available in Aberdeen and are a true sport for all. No specialist equipment is required to take part and their weekly sessions are open to all players of all abilities. Coaching is also offered by their group of Level 2 qualified coaches. They train in a mixed gender session on Monday evenings 8pm – 10pm at the Jesmond Sports Centre and on Wednesday evenings 8.30pm – 10pm for Ladies only at the Danestone Community Centre. Whisky trail

Secret Malts of Aberdeenshire The active and lost whisky distilleries dotted around Aberdeenshire have been brought together for the first time. Aberdeenshire’s rich but under-recognised whisky heritage is being showcased with the council’s Secret Malts of Aberdeenshire guide. Aberdeenshire Council’s economic development team has been working in partnership with local whisky producers to highlight the hidden range of small distilleries all within an hour’s drive of Aberdeen. Targeting the tourism markets, both at home and abroad, whisky connoisseurs, local people and historians, The Secret Malts of Aberdeenshire guide highlights the fascinating history of eight local working distilleries. The comprehensive booklet also details the area’s “lost”, or non-operational, distilleries, as well as a guide to whisky tasting and the location of some specialist whisky retail outlets. Of the eight working distilleries featured in the guide, most are relatively small in scale but each has its own distinctive history, style and taste. Four of them have small visitor centres and shops offering regular tours led by knowledgeable guides. Three of the distilleries are not officially open to the public, but will organise informal tours, often led by the distillery manager who can offer a unique insight into how their whisky is made.

Whilst the Speyside area is rightly celebrated across the world for being the centre of Scotland’s Malt Whisky Trail, our relatively small and intimate distilleries also have a huge amount to offer to visitors and to the whisky connoisseur. Perhaps a little less well known, the flavours, quality and charm of these “secret malts” make it well worth the effort for us to highlight the trail and for visitors to seek them out. The industry supports 35,000 jobs and around £2 billion is being invested in infrastructure over the next two years. It is of vital importance to the economy.

Aberdeenshire’s eight working distilleries featured in the guide are: • Ardmore at Kennethmont • Fettercairn • Glendronach at Forgue • Glen Garioch at Oldmeldrum • Glenglassaugh at Portsoy • Knockdhu at Knock • Macduff • The Royal Lochnagar at Crathie

It’s just around the corner… …Christmas that is. Now we all know someone who buys their prezzies in the January sales, has their cards written and addressed by Easter and their turkey ordered before the first frost. We hate their smugness and lack of proper festive spirit but mainly we hate them because we know that we could never ever be that organised...until now! We’re not suggesting that you start planning Christmas while on your summer holidays but it does pay to be a little bit organised. You’ll arrive at December 25th with far fewer grey hairs and much lower blood pressure if you plan ahead. Clear out food cupboards Be ruthless. Chuck out all the out-of-date items and things you know will never be eaten. Make room for all those festive goodies. Clear out toy cupboards Be ruthless. Involve the kids. Donate outgrown and unplayed-with items to charity. If you are an eBayer, spend an afternoon listing items for sale.

10

Order meat early Farmers’ markets and shops are teeming at this Christmas time. Don’t imagine you’ll get what you want if you leave it until the last minute. Who’s coming to dinner? Are there any vegetarians, vegans or dairy intolerances among your guests. Are you planning a party? List all the food, alcohol and gift items you think you will need and add to it as you go along. Study your list Are there items which can be bought online? Do any of your local shops offer home delivery? Look into local veg-box schemes. Divide the remaining list into manageable chunks and purchase a few things each week. For foodstuffs, begin with items which can be frozen and end with the fresh items which need to be purchased just a day or two before.

Puds and cakes Make these early to give them time to mature. Stir up Sunday is the last Sunday before advent and this year is on November 30th. This is traditionally the time when Christmas puddings are made. I make

www.gazettemagazines.com t : 07813 964 875

my Christmas cake during the first week of December which gives me time to feed it as much brandy as it will hold. Yum! Write the cards It’s bit of a chore but put the carols on, pour a glass of something festive and get into the spirit. You’ll feel really virtuous when they’re done. Tree lights and outdoor lights Test them well in advance so they can be replaced if necessary. Check bed and linen status! Will you need to buy or borrow fold-up beds, or extra bedding for your guests? What about elderly guests? They may be able to lie down on a Z bed but will they ever be able to get up again! By now you should be feeling organised and in control. You may even feel the beginnings of a smug smile twitch at the corners of your mouth. Enjoy it…you earned it. Just be aware that someone somewhere hates you for it!

Garden View

Hedges

Garden boundaries are emotive subjects. There have been any number of feuds between neighbours over this very issue down the years and the main cause of aggro seems to be the humble hedge. Actually, in spite of the improvements in fancy fencing panels over the years, there really is nothing nicer than a well kept hedge. Suburban hedgerows not only soften an otherwise built-up landscape, they provide a lifeline for the wildlife which lives in towns and cities. Hedges provide shelter, privacy and - if chosen for fruit and flowers - food. Even the much maligned Leyland cypress has a part to play. It can provide a brilliant buffer against traffic noise for a start, and will screen unsightly views very quickly. Unfortunately it can easily become an outof-control monster if left unchecked. Some have reached 36m/120ft! The trick with Leylandii is to remove their tops about 1m/3ft before they reach the desired height then clip them twice a year: once in April, once in September. This keeps them looking very smart but makes them rather high-maintenance hedges. Fortunately there are many slower growing hedging plants which don’t require such intensive care.

On the whole, it’s best to choose a hedge which is in keeping with the style of your house and the area in which you live. So smart Victorian terraces look great fronted by evergreen privet or box while rural properties might consider a more natural hedge of holly, hawthorn, beech, rowan and blackthorn. While not entirely evergreen, a mixed hedge like this will provide beautiful autumn colour and plentiful food for wildlife. I’ve seen gorgeous fuchsia hedges on my trips to the south coast, while slow-growing Yew is attractive and works well on poor, chalky soils. Euonymus does well even in polluted areas or coastal regions plagued by salt winds. November is a great time to plant a new hedge. No matter which type you choose, the secret of success lies in the soil preparation. Dig over the ground thoroughly and don’t skimp on the organic matter. Decide on the planting line and dig out a trench about 12 inches/30cm deep. Fill the base with well-rotted manure or compost then replace the soil, adding in more organic matter as you go. Make sure you mulch around the young plants to help suppress weeds and retain moisture. You can trim the hedge even when it is young. It encourages stronger growth and a denser hedge structure. Plus a well maintained hedge will ensure that you and your neighbours stay on good terms for years to come. By Rachael Leverton

St Andrew’s Day St Andrew’s day is the 30th November. An annual bank holiday has taken place in his honour since 2007, in Scotland. The day is marked with musical celebrations, dancing and special food. There is also free entry to many castles and attractions on that day. St Andrew is a busy chap; he also the patron saint of Cyprus, Greece, Russia, Bulgaria and several other countries as well as gout, sore throats and spinsters! Before leaving to follow Jesus, Andrew was a fisherman. Amongst his notable acts are: bringing the first foreigners to meet Jesus, and getting a crowd of people to share food with those beside them. He became one of the twelve disciples. Andrew’s brother was Peter, the founder of the church. This relationship helped the Scots appeal for protection from the Pope against the English in 1320. St Andrew was crucified by the Romans on an ‘X’ shaped cross. This is reflected in the white of the Scottish national flag which is known as the Saltire. Some of St Andrew’s relics can be found at St Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh, others are in Amalfi, Italy. Whilst now famous as the birthplace of modern golf and for having a notable university, St Andrews the town is believed to be so called because it once housed some of St Andrew’s relics. Five Top Old Movies

There are several movies I could watch over and again. Here’s my pick of the oldies! In It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) James Stewart stars as a troubled family man, about to commit suicide on Christmas Eve, feeling that his life has amounted to nothing. He is saved by his guardian angel who shows him the lives he has touched and the difference he has made to his community. Who couldn’t resist Gene Kelly, sloshing his way through puddles and swinging from lamp posts in the 1952 film Singin’ in the Rain? Set in Hollywood at the end of the silent movie era, the score also features Donald Connor’s iconic performance of Make ‘Em Laugh. The psychological thriller What Ever Happened to Baby Jane (1962) stars Bette Davis as a failing actress who holds her sister (Joan Crawford) captive in an old Hollywood mansion. Full of menacing twists and turns, it has a shock ending that will keep you guessing! Steven Spielberg’s 1975 film Jaws is about a killer shark that makes repeated attacks on New England residents and how it is finally tracked and disposed of. The atmospheric music adds to the tension and the interaction between the three male leads is sharply observed. Finally, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (1991) is a heart-warming cartoon about a beautiful young girl who wins the affection of an enchanted beast. The animation is stunning and the score is beautiful. A new version starring Emma Watson is due for release next March. By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

1-2-1 Pain & Exercise Live with pain for longer than 6 weeks and your body starts to compensate and brings more pain. We can break your cycle of pain. Whenever we think about 1-2-1 sessions with personal trainers we tend to think of younger adults trying to Improve their performance in their sporting profession such as improving their muscular endurance to improve their long distance swim. Or big muscular men lifting large weights until they are red in the face. What if I told you, that in fact, you don’t need to be able to run a 10k or even be able to fully walk up the stairs without a break to benefit from our 1-2-1 sessions. If you’ve been in pain for longer then 6 weeks you’ll know yourself you have probably developed a over compensatory pattern that has changed the way your body moves. This could be due to an injury or health condition. A bad leg, which you now leads you to using a walking stick and therefore have now overcompensated but hunching over the stick for support and now experience lower back pain. We look at the biomechanics of your body and focus on the way you move or even don’t move. By doing so we can see how you have overcompensated over time for a pain somewhere in the body and help you realign your posture and body shape in order to improve mobility and ultimately pain. Our unique 1-2-1 sessions for older adults are all based on our own research and therefore we have the evidence, it works. We have an easy 3 step process to follow. First: we do functional tests in order to see where the muscles have stiffened and weakened as an effect for the pain in the body. We guide you to fire-up the muscles again which brings mobility back. Second: we give you muscle strengthening exercises which are simple to do but very effective. There are 8 key muscle groups we can

24

look at but in each case focus on one specific muscle to target, to get it right for you. Thirdly: For the last step we look at is nutrition. I’m sure you have all heard of how you should eat to be healthy such as 5 fruit or vegetables in a day etc. But we look deeper into your body and the needs of your body. If you come to us with arthritis pains we know that orange foods will help you to reduce pain and therefore will show you how to adapt your meals to your particular needs. We know that many people with health conditions understand they need exercises to help their condition and attended fitness classes, but if you are looking to target and address your pains directly we can help you to achieve your goals. This can be from fixing your lower back pain to helping bring mobility back to your body after you have had a stroke. We specialise in the older adult and what life brings. Whether you’re Brangelina or Joe Bloggs…what’s the true cost of divorce?

marriage, the pair, who are both successful in their own right, have brought a lot to the family table and financially they are both independently secure and key breadwinners.

As the latest celebrity split shock wave continues to ripple across the gossip columns debating the true reasons behind the demise of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s marriage, there are many normal couples dealing with divorce and the issues that surround it.

Often the main pension holder and breadwinner is the husband and the wife is awarded a one-off lump sum or matrimonial home rather than a regular income to prepare them for retirement. As this is a relatively simple division, many are tempted to accept it but it remains vital that both parties seek impartial specialist advice, as while the matrimonial home may seem like the most attractive asset, it is rarely the case and provides relatively little long-term security for the future. Inevitably divorce is an

aerialsense.co.uk

Email : info@aerialsense.co.uk Cider It is believed that cider existed as long ago as Roman times, but its popularity in the UK stems from just after the Norman Conquest. The UK has the highest per capita consumption of cider and the largest cider producing companies. Cider is the thirst-quenching choice for many on a long hot summer’s day. Ciders range from sweet to dry and can be cloudy amber in colour, brown or even clear liquids. Modern mass-produced varieties appear similar to sparkling wine whereas traditionally brewed varieties tend to be darker and stronger. A lot depends on ingredients and technique. Historically West Country varieties use cider apples and a pressing process which involves layers of straw rather than cloths. In Eastern Counties it is more usual for a variety of eating and cooking apples to be used. Scrumpy is one of the most famous forms of traditional cider. It is usually cloudy, has little or no carbonation, and a high alcohol content. When pears are used rather than apples the drink is known as Perry. Some of the big producers now have specific pear varieties and there are also many popular ‘fruit’ based contemporary brands which are created by adding other fruits to apple cider. Low alcohol versions are available meaning that cider can be enjoyed by everyone this summer. By Susan Brookes-Morris
