hat on earth happened to our heat wave? If you were lucky did you get to fly off to somewhere warm? My weekends away have been extremely mixed but nevertheless enjoyable. Lots of dancing.
Things are fairly moving on and the AIYF will be well underway by the time you receive this magazine. The Aberdeen Art Fair has a change of venue from the Music Hall to the Beach Ballroom and the date for your diary is Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th September. I met up with some very old close friends the other week and by chance we decided to go and have dinner at Poldinos. I, having the luxury of a teenager who drives, took full advantage and we got dropped off and started with a Dutch Kettle cocktail at Revolution! Don’t drink it too fast is all I will say. A short walk (stagger) to Poldinos where we were shown to a nice table in the window. Oh what to pick! No to starters - well we ended up with two to share! Main meals were very generous and dessert was heaven! All washed down with an obligatory bottle of Prosecco - it is just as well we only meet up twice a year! A fabulous night ladies (you know who you are without naming and shaming). I have my big dance competition in the middle of next month - why I put myself and my dance teacher (thank you James) through this I do not know. But I’ll go and do my best and hopefully come away with a medal! To anyone else out there pushing their boundaries - go for it. Life’s far too short to sit on the sidelines. Until next time,

This year marks 5 years of Dental Inspirations. When Dr Pumford opened in 2011, he had a dream of opening a practice that would be a central hub for the community, offering the highest quality dentistry available. That dream was realised on Friday 13th of May 2016, when Dental Inspirations won the Community Award at the Scottish Dental Awards. This award is the 3rd for the practice, and we couldn't be happier about receiving such a prestigious award. Since opening the team size has doubled, bringing with it knowledge, experience and skill like no other in Aberdeen. Dental Inspirations is often mistaken for being a 'just a cosmetic dentist' - we are not - we offer so much more.
We have a long standing patient base of families, providing them with all their routine dental care needs. Being recognised as The Community practice of Scotland is an absolute honour, and the team at Dental Inspirations can only hope the years to come
are just as rewarding. Our patients are what make our practice and we can only hope that receiving these awards confirms their belief in the practice that we are always striving to offer them the highest standards of what dentistry has to offer.
Dr Michelle Hickey would like to take you on a calm, tranquil, mercury free and non-toxic dentistry experience. 395 North Deeside Road Cults Aberdeen AB15 9SX

Beauty Summer Lovin’ by Kate Duggan
www.kateduggan.co.uk
It’s been a very long time coming, but summer is finally here. I’ve dusted off the sunnies and dug out my sandals, but couldn’t resist investing in a few new goodies… A new lip gloss is always on my summer shopping list. This year I’ve gone for Neal’s Yard’s organic Lip Gloss in Fig, £9.50. It’s rich in seed and fruit oils, so nourishes lips while giving them a decent burst of colour. It’s easy to apply and also has a subtle orange flavour and scent. Being a gloss, the colour doesn’t last that long, but it does leave my lips feeling moisturised. Next on my list is a new makeup palette. I like one that I can keep in my bag then whip out when there’s talk of cocktails. Marks and Spencer’s Autograph Face Palette ticks all the boxes. There are nine eyeshadows, two blushers and
6
four highlighters, so it can take my look from day to night with ease. What’s more, it’s housed in a cute metallic clutch bag, which you can detach from the palette and use on its own. A bargain at just £15. Now I am not normally a fan of nettles. I seem to be forever getting stung by them when retrieving a football out of the long grass or trailing after my dog through the woods. But they do have some good qualities. Nettles are packed with amino acids and proteins, so can help to strengthen your hair. You can make an effective hair rinse by steeping leaves in hot water, but if that sounds like a bit too much effort, try Paul Mitchell’s Super Strong System. This three-step hair care range uses nettles and other botanical ingredients to strengthen hair, add shine and prevent sun damage. I’ve been

using it for a few weeks now and am suitably impressed. I am incredibly lazy when it comes to body lotion, so don’t tend to use it as much as I should when I’m covered up in the winter. So once summer hits, my legs are a bit of a sorry sight. I’ve been tackling them with daily exfoliation, followed by Believa’s Natural Intensiv Body Lotion, £23.99. It’s packed with argan oil, aloe vera, jojoba and shea butter, so is incredibly moisturising. Thankfully it’s also easily absorbed, as I’m usually running late for the school run. Natural Intensiv is very gentle, so is suitable for allergy sufferers, and may help with eczema and other dry skin complaints.
British fragrance house Atkinsons is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year. To celebrate, and mark the Queen’s 90th birthday year, it has launched a new perfume, Oud Save the Queen. Inspired by the Orient, this fragrance is bursting with spicy, exotic notes, including bergamot, jasmine, orange blossom and, of course, oud. However, there are also notes of the quintessentially British Earl Grey tea. This fragrance is on my wish list, rather than shopping list, unfortunately, as it’s an eye watering £150.

VALENTINA by S.E.Lynes Published by Blackbird Review by Jane Grieve
One of the greatest pleasures of reading occurs when fiction resonates with our reality. How useful, then, to find a novel that is not only set in Aberdeenshire, but which reflects the lives of many people who live and work in North East Scotland. However, there are limits - none of us would wish to endure the sort of haunting drama this particular character encountered. A romp through this gripping thriller gives the mundane an enticing appeal. VALENTINA by S.E. Lynes, is a psychological thriller which moves with such pace it is wise for any reader to put aside some time as this is a proper page-turner. A Glaswegian journalist, Shona McGilvery, moves to the North East of Scotland with her partner Mickey and their baby, Isla. They find a perfect cottage by a wood in the countryside and set up home, the promise of an idyllic, almost fairytale life ahead of them.
However, as Mikey works offshore, Shona must adapt to life with her other half out of reach on a rig somewhere in the North Sea for weeks at a time. Somewhat surprised to find herself in this position, she forces herself to make the best of it, although the deep, dark wood that surrounds the cottage doesn’t ease her frame of mind. A creeping sense of loneliness threatens not only her happiness but her sanity, until one day she meets Valentina. Also a mum of a young baby, the charismatic and enchanting Valentina becomes Shona’s new best friend with alarming speed - there are too many similarities for them not to hang out together. However, it doesn’t take long for Shona to realise it’s not the wood that should have been setting off alarm bells it’s her new friend. An insightful illustration of how loneliness can push us into making rash, ill-considered decisions, this book is packed with neat observation. Vibrant characters, sassy dialogue, lively descriptions abound, and with intriguing plot twists driving the action, this relatively familiar domestic set-up turns into a psychological nightmare. Be warned, it’s gripping. Available from Amazon for £10.99 or 0.99 on kindle

A friend has sent me a copy of your magazine, West End 2. Many thanks for the lovely advert for the Animal Blessing Service on page 14, it is in a super eye-catching position at the top of the page and most attractively laid out. This is much appreciated. The Service was lovely, as always. For the last two years our animal congregation has been solely dogs, but I am delighted to say that this year we had two cats, siblings, who walked into the hall, wearing leads, and made themselves comfortable side by side on a chair, looking down, in the somewhat supercilious way that cats have, on the many dogs around them. We also had a beautiful pale cream, long-haired guinea pig called Vanilla, and a sweet rabbit called Holly. The animals all behaved impeccably, although one dog did howl throughout the hymns, whether in appreciation or protest we were unsure! I hope that any of your readers who attended the Service as a result of your advert enjoyed it as much as everyone else did. Many thanks again. All good wishes, Myrna

School Holiday health advice
As children across Scotland start their summer holidays, NHS 24 is offering help to parents, grandparents and carers to keep the wee ones safe and healthy, whether at home or abroad. There are a number of potential health issues people should be prepared for, from simple allergies like hay fever, to bumps and bruises. All the information to help people enjoy the best of the weather has been brought together in a dedicated 'Safe Summer in Scotland' section on the NHS inform website www.nhsinform.co.uk . NHS 24's Associate Medical Director Dr Laura Ryan said: "Nobody wants ill health to spoil their summer and the majority of the most common problems are easily preventable.
"Accidents do happen of course, so as well as preventing illness, it is best to be prepared with a good first aid kit. Your local pharmacist can advice what your first aid kit should include. Remember to take it if you're travelling and if you're lucky enough to be heading abroad be sure to have all relevant paperwork e.g. travel insurance, before you travel. If you fall ill abroad you'll need to contact the local health services . The Fit for Travel website is a good resource if you're travelling overseas (www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk).” “If you take regular medication or have repeat prescriptions make sure you order what you need and pick up in plenty of time before leaving for your holiday. This will help avoid any last minute panics and remember, you can pick up a prescription for a relative if they are unable to make it themselves. "I would encourage everyone to have a look at the summer health section on NHS inform http://www. nhsinform.co.uk/health-in-focus/campaigns/readyfor-summer/ - it brings all the information together in one place. But if you, or someone you care for, does fall ill you should know who to turn to. The website knowwhototurnto.org can help with this and of course NHS 24's out of hours service is there for you on free phone 111 if you need help quickly. Hopefully you won't need us and you'll enjoy a safe, healthy and happy holiday with lots of sunshine."

Beer of the Month It would be unthinkable not to raise a glass of an American beer on our Transatlantic chums’ Independence Day, so let’s mark 4th July with an oddity from San Francisco. Anchor Steam, a 4.8% amber beer, has been brewed on and off at various locations in San Francisco since 1871, when it was first produced by a German-born bar-owner named Gottlieb Brekle. Clearly – and like literally hundreds of migrant German brewers in the American Midwest – Brekle intended to brew something like the lagers of his homeland, but without the right ingredients or any means of refrigeration. He ended up using lager yeast but ale malts, the floweriest local hops available, and instead of a properly chilled fermenter a big shallow open affair up on the brewery roof. Well, mongrels make the cutest pups and Anchor Steam, although definitely a hybrid, isn’t half bad. The nose is malty and grassy and a bit spirity, too; the mouth feel is creamy and viscous, with an
earthy flavour underlying a sharp aggressive citrus tang. The finish is bitter, dry, and for an American beer, very long. So: not a bit like Bud. Our second beer for July couldn’t be more English. Thwaites’s Wainwright Golden Ale was first brewed as a seasonal special for summer 2007 and commemorated the famous fellwalker and author Alfred Wainwright who, like Thwaites itself, was a native of Blackburn in Lancashire. It was such a success, and with good reason, that the brewery kept it on as a regular. It’s been brewed by Banks’s in Wolverhampton since Thwaites decided to scale back its brewing operations a couple of years ago, but it’s none the worse for that. A quaffable 4.1% alcohol, it’s a very pale lemon yellow, with a soft nose of lemon jelly and hints of apple overlying a biscuit malt base. The palate is much sharper and hoppier but also has more depth; the finish returns to a rich but dry maltiness. One to broach on 30th July as you celebrate the golden anniversary of England’s World Cup win! By Ted Bruning

sat with her in my lap after taking her from her parents, watching with her intently the only item she had brought with her to her foster carer’s, her teddy, being slowly heated in the oven to disinfect it. You see this little girl had been neglected and had septic sores due to an un-treated lice infestation and her new carer had the insight to know she needed her teddy to feel safe. As a social worker I have seen many feats of love and compassion from foster carer’s and adopters over the years but they began just like you with a passion to help and a desire to be part of the solution. You don’t have to be perfect to be a foster carer, children will take you just as you are. Dr. Barnardo’s in the 1800’s decided to become a medical Christian missionary in China and began to train in London. He soon realised that there were thousands of children sleeping on the streets and saw there was a need to help the most vulnerable in his own community. Barnardo’s was begun.
Fostering comes in different forms, Helping to look after children while decisions are made about their future Providing a forever family Giving breaks to full time foster carers or families that need a break By choosing to become a foster carer you can make a huge difference in a child’s life - and yours. At Barnardo’s, we have over 100 years’ experience finding families for children in need You don’t have to do this alone, you will receive support, training, guidance and allowances and fees. We truly believe there are no unwanted children just unfound families. To find out more please visit http://www. barnardos.org.uk/fosteringandadoption. htm Or contact the Aberdeen office on 01224 624090.
In Scotland there were 15,000 children in foster care in 2014. That is more that the population of Skye. In September of 2015 there were 206 children in Scotland that needed to be adopted, 197 of them were boys. There is a need in our own communities to serve our own children. Anyone can apply to become a foster carer. Whether you are single or married, male or female, homeowner or renting, straight, lesbian, gay, trans or bisexual- you could foster a child. However, you must: be over the age of 21, and have a spare room at home.

Pre Flight Checks Pilots check their aircraft before take-off. Do you do the same with your car before driving-off? Whether it’s your car, a friend’s, your company’s or even a hire car, when you’re the driver, it’s down to you to make sure your transport is legal. So, before driving off, consider conducting a “pre-flight check” prior to entering the vehicle and a “cockpit check” when in it. A simple walk around the car, checking the bodywork and tyres is all that is required - it takes seconds but could save you time and trouble. Just prior to writing this piece, I noticed a parked car with an almost flat near-side front
tyre. If the driver of that car approaches the driver’s door directly and hops straight in, they would miss that flat tyre and probably only be aware of it when on the road, meaning they will need to do a risky roadside wheel change. Do you regularly check your lights? Making sure your lights work, and knowing how to check them, is now part of the driving test. It’s simple to do and could save you from missing something at night, or someone driving into the back of you. You’ll avoid getting points on your licence too. The same goes for a regular check of your wipers, and please don’t wait until they make the windscreen smeary to see through. Think what you might miss in the rain if your wipers aren’t up to the job. Perhaps a child crossing the road? A quick bi-weekly check on these items will make sure all is well.

Keep calm and get colouring By Kate McLelland
Close your eyes and think back to the simple pleasures of childhood: a rainbow box of crayons on the table and, beside it, a book of illustrations just waiting to be coloured in. Remember the intense concentration as you filled in the blank spaces with your favourite shades of yellow, red, purple, green and blue? The sense of achievement when you offered up your masterpiece for some parental praise? Now fast-forward to the present day, when high-tech gadgets and gizmos allow us to create sophisticated and brightly coloured designs with just a few mouse clicks and high quality, full colour prints of those designs can be produced within seconds. Such innovations should have consigned the humble crayon to the dustbin of history, so it’s amazing to learn that in the second decade
of the 21st century one of the most popular hobbies amongst adults is colouring in line drawings by hand. Adult colouring has become a global phenomenon, spreading to countries as diverse as Brazil and New Zealand. In fact the interest is so great that the world’s largest wooden pencil manufacturer, Faber-Castell, has been forced to increase shifts at its

German factory in order to keep up with demand.
Adult ‘colourists’ love intricate, challenging designs that allow for subtle colour variations and due to this trend Sandra Suppa reports that customers are no longer satisfied with a standard box of 36 colours: “We are noticing a trend in people preferring bigger sets of 72 or even 120 colours”. Printers and booksellers have also seen a stratospheric rise in the popularity of colouring books created for the adult market. high on the bestseller list. So is Johanna Basford’s Secret Garden, with its beautifully detailed pen and ink drawings of an imaginary garden. It is ‘secret’ because there are tiny creatures hidden within the artwork, ready to be discovered as colourists get to work. Since its publication in 2013, The Secret Garden has been translated into 14 different languages, selling more than a million copies. Emma Farrarons’ The Mindfulness Colouring Book is another popular title. Mindfulness, with its emphasis on being aware of the present moment, fits particularly well with this hobby because colouring is essentially a repetitive, undemanding activity that can be used to focus the mind. Farrarons’ book has been printed in pocket size so it can be used in any setting where mindfulness is practised.

There has been considerable debate as to whether adult colouring can be classed as ‘art therapy’, as therapists argue that the process is not essentially creative. However, colourists claim that their hobby can lead to a calmer, almost meditative frame of mind and this view is supported by clinical psychologist Dr David Holmes: “With our workaholic culture, we spend most of our lives in ‘beta mode’, which is when we’re alert, problem-solving, decision-making. By actively altering the preponderance of certain brain patterns, you can shift into ‘alpha mode’, which is more like the state of mind we have as children. Meditation and similar techniques require learning and practice, whereas anyone can just drop into colouring-in.” Frenchwoman Cynthia Riviére, who administrates a Facebook group of more than 1,000 colouring book fans, has also discovered that her hobby has direct health

benefits: “I realised that colouring makes my headaches go away. I concentrate, my breathing slows down and I move into a deep calm.” No wonder colouring has so many converts, including celebrities such as TV chef Nigella Lawson, actor Zooey Deschanel and TV presenter Kirstie Allsopp. Colouring may seem like a solitary pastime but it can also become a social activity: in recent years colouring clubs and parties have proved popular, particularly in America and France. The Ladies Coloring Club is a Facebook Group based in the US which links to groups around the world. Alternatively you could start your own group like 38-year-old Suzanne Parsonage from Bristol, who launched a colourists group from her local pub. Many local libraries also host adult colouring sessions.
If you are eager to try colouring for yourself but don’t want to invest in a book of illustrations just yet, go online and download some free printable pages. You’ll find some great library printables at www.pinterest.com that will help you decide whether adult colouring is for you. If you are feeling that this hobby is a little too childish, you’ll be relieved to hear that a recent article in Director magazine identified a growing trend amongst business leaders who have taken up colouring in order to alleviate stress. So grab a box of crayons or felt-tips and make a start. It seems there’s every reason to add a little colour to your everyday life and all you need to worry about is keeping within the lines!

Pec Minor: I've already spoken of it in a previous blog (See www.PrimeMoverPathway.co.uk). The reason for a second visit to this muscle is that your body is an integrated system. What happens at the shoulder will affect the hips, etc. When the pec minor muscle is over active (or facilitated) it means the muscles on the other side are not acting as they could (or inhibited). As a result there are several issues which could arise because of this. A shortened pec minor will cause a forward rounded shoulder. Also... If the pec minor is tight, the muscles at the opposite end of the movement may not be working so well: Upper back and shoulders (Trapezius & Rhomboids) cannot pull shoulder blades together for a good, tall posture. Back of the arm to centre of the spine (Latissimus Dorsi) cannot pull the shoulder blade back and down, to release shoulder tension. Turning the arm outwards (Posterior deltoid and infraspinatus) cannot rotate the arm away from the body. • Lower back, base of the spine (quadrates lumborum) inhibits breathing.
22
A shortened pec minor can cause dysfunction along the (kinetic) chain of movement. This is not necessarily an issue of ageing. Pec minor is connected to the muscle in the hips which may affect gait. When the pec minor is over working, the hip muscle doesn't work, affecting the length of the stride. In the Strength and Balance class I address the hip flexors to improve gait, movement and posture. Finally, it may also cause breathing to be restricted. The quadrates lumborum (QL) is another muscle which opposes the pec minor, during breathing. In the previous article I mentioned that pec minor will aid in the movement of inhalation. The muscle opposing it is the QL at the base of the spine, QL stabilises the ribs when inhaling. So if the QL doesn't work as well as it could then lower back pain may well be the result. The I Move Freely class addresses lower back dysfunction before strengthening muscles. It's amazing how one small muscle can have a large effect and affect the body in so many different ways. This just goes to show
www.gazettemagazines.com t : 07813 964 875
e : mail@gazettemagazines.com
that the body is one complete, connected, joined up unit.
Difficulties in one area cannot be treated in isolation. It's important to remember that when you adjust one part of the body it will affect another. So next time you experience a discomfort, or a restriction think in terms of not where the pain is but what other part of my posture is out of alignment causing strain on this part of my body? If your not sure, book a 121 session and I'll help you understand. Otherwise the I Move Freely class on Monday at 11:00am or Strength & Balance on Wednesday at 12:15pm or Thursday at 11:00 am is where you need to be. Summer Saving! The long days of summer are not just lazy for us, they are also a quiet time for many tradesmen. Think about it; as soon as the temperature drops at the end of September people will begin to think about cold snaps and central heating. They’ll probably arrange for their boiler to be serviced...along with everyone else. So get ahead of the game and book now. While you’re at it, if you have an open fire or a solid fuel range, order fuel now, in bulk while you can take advantage of lower summer prices. Summer is also a good time to organise a chimney sweep. There aren’t too many about and they tend to be swamped in the autumn as people think about
using their fireplace again. Other businesses with a quiet period during the summer Summer is traditionally a quiet time for financial advisers and companies specialising in investments. Perhaps you could benefit from a financial makeover. Bizarrely it’s a quiet time for train and coach travel so you might be able to pick up a bargain ticket or two. Summer has always been a quiet time for politics so perhaps now is a good time to tackle your MP about any local issues which are bothering you. The summer is generally a good time to check out your local high street for great deals on electrical goods. By Tom Hancock

The Ulster Cup is presented to the magician who displays the best technical skill and entertainment value in Aberdeen Magical Society’s annual close-up magic competition. The President’s Plate is awarded by the society’s current president to his favourite act of the competition. Although James has won the President’s Plate on two previous occasions, this is the first time he has lifted the Ulster Cup as he wowed the judges with his creative magic and comedic timing. James, who cites his early influences as TV stars Paul Daniels, David Copperfield and David Blaine, has always been fascinated by the challenge presented by magic, likening it to the finest ‘whodunit’ mystery. But it was joining Aberdeen Magical Society that he feels really allowed him to hone his craft.
