Introducing local people to local businesses since 2005!
“The CatParade” Almost a century after it was built, Union Bridge was widened to accommodate “modern” Road traffic and the stone balustrades were replaced with wrought iron ones designed by an architect William Kelly. These were topped with small leopards, symbols of the city’s heraldry which have become known as “Kellys cats”. Only one side of the railings remains but the cats continue to watch over passers-by within the City Centre.

The project will involve local business and the arts community as well as recognising 100 years of Rotary International in Aberdeen” Sponsorship Each sponsor will be responsible for decorating their own cat but can also be put in touch with an artist if required. Sponsors can either purchase a cat outright for £350 or offer the cat up for auction at £250. Suggestions for decorating your cat are: Working with a local school, commissioning an artist or launching as internal competition for staff. The Rotary club of Aberdeen Bon Accord have, partly to mark 100 years of Rotary in the City launched a project “The CatParade” aiming to produce 100 replicas of the “Kelly's Cats,” and to transform these in to works of art. to be painted by amateurs and professionals, which are then to be exhibited and later auctioned in September to raise funds for CLAN, UNICEF and the Denis Law Legacy Trust's streetsport initiative. Cat number 1 which was given back to the Rotary, displays the workmanship of the late but renowned local artist Eric Auld who painted one of the cats for a similar auction around 10 years ago This cat has recently been on display in Jamieson and Carry’s window in Union Street close to the home of it’s forebears. Hello Hi everyone, how are you all? I am truly enjoying every last drop of sunny weather. Sheer bliss... So what’s exciting about this issue. Well it brings us nicely to the middle of the year. The longest day, Father’s day and of course the start of the summer break. Time to have family time, holidays, fun at the park, long lies and lazy days. I’ve had a very full dance calendar this last month and it is quite exhausting being away every weekend but it’s also exciting being away and meeting new people. And the best bit about it is that you can be in a horrible mood, experienced the week from hell and you poke your nose round
the dance hall door and it is instant happiness, smiles, hugs and kisses. One of the best hobbies you could ever take up! Just saying... other’s prefer a round of golf, football, swimming - what ever you do to relax enjoy it whilst you can. May the summer get extended and the winter get shorter that would really make me happy! Anyway, enough ramblings - go grab that cuppa and enjoy the magazine. Until the next time… Sue Only 3 deadlines to Xmas Issues!!! 27 June | West End 1 27 July | West End 2 | Kingswells 27 August | West End 1 27 September | West End 2 | Kingswells 27 October| West End 1

The Plitvice Lakes Croatia Set up in 1949 in northern Croatia, the Plitvice Lakes are the oldest national park in the country and the largest, covering close to 300 square kilometres. There, on the edge of the rugged Dinaric Alps, rocks and water have created a unique landscape protected by UNESCO and one of the most impressive karst formations in the world. Yet just 400 years ago, the whole area was inaccessible, draped in mystery and legends from buried treasures to the kind-hearted Black Queen who gave water to the poor. In the 18th century, it was described in turn as ‘five beautiful lakes in the densest wood’ and ‘the devil’s garden’. But those who come here today know that neither is true: there is no devil in this natural paradise but there are 16 beautiful lakes for all to see.
scenery and fresh air quieten mind, body and soul. The lakes beckon, more bewitching the closer you are. Azure, silvery grey, deep blue or emerald green, shimmering in the sun or mirroring a darkening sky, they are for ever changing as light and shade filter through the abundant foliage along the banks. The lower lakes glitter through a rocky canyon, the upper lakes nestle among forested slopes rising to 1,279 metres. Mediterranean and Alpine plants mingle with fir, spruce and beech and in the remote areas of the northwest, trees are up to 700 years old. Over 1,100 plant species have been recorded in the park, including 75 endemic and 55 different orchids. Gentians and lilies add colour in the undergrowth and grassy bells and wild hyacinths grow alongside endangered species such as the carnivorous round leaf sundew. Spring heather, beard grass and mint are also found along the lakes where maple and sumac trees turn all shades of red and gold in autumn.
The twelve upper lakes and four lower lakes are all connected, divided by natural limestone barriers shaped by water, wind and plants and creating myriad waterfalls. The highest is the aptly named ‘Large Waterfall’, swollen by the Plitvica river and tumbling down 78 metres into the final section of the lower lakes. Just a stone’s throw away, the source of the Korana is said to be the most beautiful in karst country, heading through the canyon towards a bucolic village dozing in flower meadows. Meanwhile, footpaths and single-file boardwalks meander from one magical lake to the next, festooned in waterfalls, canyons and caves, and whatever the crowds, little disturbs the peace but the rumbling of cascades and bird song. There are popular viewpoints and secluded corners, steps here and there and for those who want to take it easy, rides on an electric boat across Lake Kozjak or a panoramic train in the upper levels. But nothing beats a leisurely stroll where lush

Wild cats, lynx, deer and wolves all live in the park but the brown bear has become the true symbol of the Plitvice Lakes. Yet visitors on a day trip from the beach are far more likely to spot the butterflies, an Orange Tip, a Painted Lady, a Red Admiral, to name just a few, and at least some of the 105 species of birds, woodpeckers, grebes, larks, finches and others, or perhaps a rare golden eagle hovering in the thermals high above the glistening lakes.

A touch of indulgence Work and family demands can make it pretty difficult to find time to treat ourselves. Thankfully, our top picks this month make indulgence easy. I have very dry skin, so tend to use rich body butters. But sometimes I like something a bit lighter, that doesn’t take half an hour to sink in. Odylique’s Rose Velvet Body Lotion, £29, has proven a godsend. It’s a powerhouse of botanical ingredients, including aloe, avocado, cocoa bean, coconut and rose petals, smells gorgeous and absorbs quickly. My skin just drinks it up, and feels much softer and more hydrated for the rest of the day. Plus, as it’s 100% natural (93% organic), it’s gentle enough to use on even my daughter’s sensitive skin. Continuing on with the rose theme, another of my beauty essentials at the moment is Mixtress’s It’s All Roses Toner, £10.95. I find most toners too drying for my skin, but this one is really hydrating. The main ingredient is rose water, from petals that have been steamed to extract the oil and juice. Unsurprisingly, it smells beautiful and is perfect for freshening up on a hot day. I like to keep it to hand to spritz if my skin

feels dried out by central heating or air-conditioning. It’s great at removing any last traces of makeup, and leaves skin feeling wonderfully soft. I try a lot of cleansers as a beauty writer, but Akamuti’s Sweet Orange Facial Cleanser, £7, is one of my all-time favourites. The sweet orange oil works as a natural exfoliator, to wipe away dead skin cells and leave me with softer, ‘glowier’ skin. Other natural oils, including sweet almond and olive oil, ‘feed’ my skin and leave it softer and plumper. It’s effective at removing makeup (including mascara), but gentle enough for even my sensitive skin. Plus, a little goes a long way, so it’s superb value for money. A new lipstick always feels like a real indulgence. More so than a mascara or pretty much any other cosmetic product. A pop of colour and I’m set for whatever lies ahead that day. Clarins’ new Joli Rouge Brilliant Lipsticks, £19.50, are a real treat. Formulated with organic marsh samphire extract and mango oil, they’re very hydrating, so leave lips feeling utterly pampered. With a choice of 12 colours, there’s one to suit any skin tone. Guava gets my vote for daytime wear, though coral tulip comes a very close second. I’m a bit lazy when it comes to skincare, so I do love a product that makes it easier. Plantscription Powerful Lifting Overnight Mask, £52, by Origins does just that. As implied by the name, you massage it into your skin before bed, then forget about it. It absorbs into your skin, so you don’t need to faff around with cotton wool pads or a muslin cloth to remove it. Natural ingredients sourced from around the globe include Indian Commiphora, a tree resin that works to stimulate skin’s own anti-ageing Hyaluronic Acid. The mask helps to tighten, lift and plump skin, so you look fresher-faced in the morning, even if the kids/ dog/partner woke you up several times in the night.

The Skin Blemish Clinic at Kumiko
is dedicated to providing effective, safe, professional treatments for the following skin concerns, utilising advanced electrolysis techniques to deliver exceptional results and complete client satisfaction. Suitable for both men and women, many can be successfully and quickly removed. It is a tried and trusted method from the early 1900’s. What are they and what causes them? Red/Thread/Broken Veins (Telangiectasia) These are all vascular (blood) blemishes. Red veins appear as small red lines, blood spots are round, red lumps, while spider veins have a central red spot with red lines radiating out from the centre like the legs of a spider. They can all be hereditary. Other possible causes can include capillaries weakening with ageing, intense scrubbing of the skin, sun/wind damage, pregnancy, sensitive skin/rosacea, excessive consumption of alcohol, smoking, skin injury, outdoor pursuits, and exposure to extremes in temperatures. Spider Veins (spider naevi) Red veins most commonly appear on the face, often around the nose, cheeks and chin, spider naevi are commonly found in clusters on the cheeks and chest and blood spots are often found on the chest, abdomen and arms. Treatment by electrolysis instantly coagulates or mops up the trapped blood as the heat works through the vein. The vein is cauterised at both ends preventing it from re-filling, making this treatment highly successful. There will be no scar or bruising like with some treatments. Dilated capillaries treated by electrolysis do not reappear, but new ones can form. Advice is
10
given during consultation on how to discourage further appearing. They are not dangerous, they are purely a cosmetic problem. Removing these unsightly blemishes is safe and leaves no remaining trace. What are they and what causes them? Whiteheads (Milia) These are white, pearly, rounded lumps which occur in the uppermost layer of skin when sebum (oil naturally produced by the skin) becomes trapped in a blind duct. More commonly found in dry skin conditions the exact cause is unknown, but often occurs with use of too rich creams on the skin. They are treated by applying the heat energy of electrolysis to them, where a tiny, pindot crust will form which will heal and fall away, usually within a few days, leaving no mark at all. What are they and what causes them? Skin tags (fibroepithelial polyps) Skin tags are soft and ‘squidgy’ i.e. you can wiggle them around and they can be skin coloured or brown. Sometimes they are caused by same virus as warts. Can appear anywhere on face and body but are more commonly found in areas of friction such as the neck (from collars and jewellery), underarms, under the breasts and in the groin area. They can be hereditary, can increase with age and may also appear during pregnancy. They are removed quickly and easily by applying the heat energy to the stalk or neck of the skin tag, then dessicating the tag where it will fall off within 5 days leaving a pinkish mark where the new skin forms underneath but this will fade to leave no mark at all. Usually do not require further treatment. Before the treatment can take place a patch test is required. Please see Jenny to discuss/make an appointment.

Achieve your 10,000 Paces the Easy Way!
exercise with a friend or socialise with people in the bar afterwards but this somewhat defeats the object. Tim Sant, Head of Dance for Ceroc, the largest dance organisation in the U.K, says, “Many people are happy to undertake pastimes and hobbies that improve their social circle and provide them with an element of fun. If exercise can be combined with this all of the boxes are ticked and more importantly if all of the boxes are ticked, people will not only continue with the exercise, but will revel in it.
W
ith growing concerns about obesity across the U.K, the government recently issued health warnings, resulting in a recommendation that everyone should take 10,000 paces every day. People have been advised to take extra trips up and down their stairs at home. Workers have been told to park further away from the office and to walk that extra distance, whilst parents have been encouraged to prise their children away from their computers in favour of more active play. Intention is a wonderful thing, but how easy is it really to rack up those 10,000 paces and who is actually hitting their target? Traditional exercise like going to the gym, aerobics classes and jogging are obviously going to have an overall positive affect on your fitness, appearance and health, but the word “exercise” still repels some of us. Even when we finally bite the bullet and join a gym how many of us continue with the regime? How many of us pay our gym membership thinking it will make us go - only to find it’s money down the drain? So what is it that stops us? In actual fact nothing, except that the forms of exercise mentioned are very individual and consequently can be quite anti-social. You can
If dance is one of the answers the question is how will it affect our fitness levels and how many of those 10,000 paces will be used? Toni Whitehouse, mother of two and self-confessed Ceroc addict tried wearing a pedometer during a normal Ceroc night and was amazed at the results. “I bought a pedometer after the ‘10,000 pace’ hype started and I found it really tough to hit my target even when I opted to walk the kids to school,” said Toni. “When I used it at Ceroc I couldn’t believe the results! In just one evening of dance I managed to rack up more than 12,000 paces and, what’s more, I was having fun doing it!” Ceroc is a fun and social partner dance which originates from French Jive - a combination of Rock ‘n’ Roll and Swing dancing but without complicated footwork. It’s easy to learn and because you continually change partners you are likely to dance with 20 or more people in a night and will probably meet up to 70 others! All this suggests that Ceroc is a form of exercise that really works to get you fit - and stay fit! There are over 120 Ceroc nights in operation across the U.K so the likelihood is that there is a class nearby for you to attend. For more information about your closest venue visit - www.cerocscotland.com or call 07813 269372. Take this article along and benefit from free lifetime membership plus your first class free!

Beer at Home
By Ted Bruning
All the talk of “craft” brewing you hear these days has prompted some deep historical reflections in your correspondent, who has been of drinking age almost (but not quite) since Britain’s – and actually, the world’s – microbrewing revolution started in Selby, North Yorkshire, in 1972. In the UK, the microbrewers’ common intent was to revive traditional cask-conditioned ale in the face of cold, fizzy, overprocessed and underpowered keg versions. But in the US, where many of the pre-Prohibition brewers had been second or third generation German immigrants, it was a tradition of tasty and authentic lagers that had been overwhelmed by mass-produced imitations. Two of the earliest US microbrewers were the Boston Beer Company, founded in 1984, and the Brooklyn Brewery, founded in 1987. Their stories are fascinating in their own right, but from our point of view what’s important is that their main products are both lagers based on recipes stretching back beyond Prohibition – attempts, in short, to recreate authentic American beers. What they have in common is that they are much richer and more aromatic than your everyday British-brewed version of European pilsner. Samuel Adams Lager from the Boston Beer Company at 4.8% abv is dark for a lager; almost coppery, in fact, perhaps betraying the use of some darker malts. It has been brewed under licence by Shepherd Neame of Faversham, Kent, since 2012, but it seems to have lost none of its original character. The nose is powerfully spicy, with hints of grass and pineapple all but overwhelmed by the peppery tang of the Tettnang hop. The palate is rich and robust for a lager, with yet more peppery spice; the finish is fresh, minerally, and not at all bitter. Brooklyn Lager at 5.2% advertises itself as a Vienna (i.e. slightly richer than a Pilsner). The aroma here is just as powerful, but more floral than spicy and with a sweet maltiness reminiscent of fruit cake. The palate is subtle and zesty and much lighterbodied than Sam Adams; the finish is mild, sweetish, and well-rounded.

For him, inspiration just wouldn’t let go. Having sampled a few local drinks in the Caribean, he began to wonder if it might be possible to produce rum in Scotland. The idea kept nagging at him until he thought he’d better find out a bit more about how rum was produced. He tried to arrange a visit to a local rum distillery, only to be refused at every turn. However, this lack of knowledge didn’t put him off, and by the time he returned to Scotland he had a name for his ‘yet-to-be-created product’, Dark Matter. But an idea and a name is just the start. It’s at this moment most people would be put off, well aware that great ideas usually seem more attractive when relaxing away from home and dreaming on an idyllic beach. But as soon as Jim was home, he set about persuaded his brother, John, that making rum in Scotland was seriously do-able.
D
ARK MATTER
By Jane Grieve
It has a mysterious, intriguing name, an indication of the innovative imagination that lies behind one of Scotland’s most unusual products. It’s also a name to remember. After all, Dark Matter is the first and only rum to be produced in Scotland. As the company celebrates its first birthday, it looks like it’s here to stay. Several years ago Jim Ewen was on holiday in the Dominican Republic, relaxing with friends and family over a few cocktails. Having worked in the oil industry for some time, he was set for a change and was keen to start his own business. The only problem was ‘what’? It has been known for many of us to have crazy ideas while sipping cocktails under the sun. But most of us forget about them as the heady mix of alcohol and heat work their magic. Not Jim.
A long period of research began, followed by the practicalities of how to finance this endeavour. It is never easy to raise funds for any new enterprise, but this was something so new, so different and so unusual that it was particularly difficult to attract support. However, eventually perseverance paid off and Jim and John were set to start. A suitable premises where the product could be produced and bottled was sought and found in the heart of Deeside. The North Banchory Company were welcoming and helped the brothers to establish themselves in a business unit. Cory Mason, a distiller then based at Herriot Watt University’s Institute of Brewing and Distilling, was brought on board as his expertise would work out how to produce the ideal rum. Equipment was acquired, testing and tasting ensued, a delicious spiced rum was perfected and finally the first bottle of Dark Matter was a reality. A year later, Dark Matter has over 350 stockists throughout Scotland, word is spreading, sales continue to grow and already the company has won considerable accolades, most notably The Rum Masters’ Gold Award for 2016. Jim says
the North East of Scotland has always had a taste for dark rum, a remnant from trading days perhaps, and the same can be said of Glasgow. But now he detects a change in the attitude to rum in Scotland and the UK as a whole. In the late 90s vodka went through a resurgence in popularity, and recently gin has become the ‘in thing’. But as people like to sample something new, cocktails are popular and different tastes are always intriguing, rum is becoming an increasingly popular option. So how should we consume Dark Matter? Everyone has heard of Rum and Coke, but Jim has two favourite suggestions to keep our taste buds entertained. There’s a ‘Dark ’n’ Stormy’, (rum, ginger beer or ale with a wedge of lime) or an ‘Old-Fashioned’ (angostura bitters, orange
and a sugar cube). Whatever takes your fancy, it looks like rum is set for a resurgence. It’s good to know a business based in Deeside is set to play a such an inspired part in Scotland’s drinks industry.

Prime Mover Pathway
I
n January 2016 I was fortunate enough to work with Professor Julien Baker at the university of West of Scotland. Using my community classes we worked on a strategy to find evidence for the exercise programme I deliver, improving movement & strength in the older adult. Prime Mover Pathway was formed two years ago when I rebranded Laura Walker Limited. Prime Mover - from a fitness perspective - identifies the main muscle working. So when you lift a kettle, the prime mover is the biceps muscle. I also chose it to mean the main person, you, my client. I wanted to develop a brand of exercise which made a difference to the older adult. After all, the older adults have an enormous range of ability. And they want to keep it, more importantly, improve that ability. It’s taken years of experience to identify the best set of exercises. Now I needed the assessments to find the evidence I needed and demonstrate that it was beneficial to the older adult. I chose 3 assessments; participants were to be measured at the start of the 8 weeks and at the end of the 8 weeks of the exercise programme. The assessments were: ‘Sit to Stand’ - How many sit to stands could be performed in 30 seconds. 1 Repetition Maximum on a biceps curl Toe Reach They all replicated daily movements. The outcome of the second round of assessments were amazing. It is common knowledge, within the fitness industry, that it takes 12 weeks for muscles to change and adapt. So an 8 week programme is pushing
20
the limit on progress. Given that this is an older adult age group, where connective tissue loses its elasticity as we age, and many people have health conditions which impact performance. This research was essential to identify success for this programme. I also anticipated that not everyone would manage to attend the class every week. So progress was always going to be challenging to achieve. Average age of the participants in this programme was 77 (64-90 years of age). Average class attendance was 7.2 weeks out of the possible 8. 47 people out of 51 were available for assessment at the end of the programme. I can’t thank, those who took part, enough; they gave up time, outside of class, for me to do this research, and it was invaluable for me. The amazing findings are: Sit to stand - A 26% increase. This also demonstrates an improvement in balance. 1 RM Biceps curl- A 33% increase. The ability to lift a full kettle and more. Toe Reach- A 62% increase. This demonstrates ability to put on socks & shoes comfortably. So when your next thinking where will I go to exercise? Will it be too hard for me? Will it be beneficial to me? Choose a specific exercise programme for the older adult. The evidence based exercise programme Prime Mover Pathway delivers, really works. It improves movement, strength and enjoyment. The programme helps the older adult stay strong, mobile and active, for a great quality of life. More importantly, your the prime person in your family, and this exercise programme revives your prime movements. When you are strong

and able to be move well, you are happy and confident to continue enjoying socialising with friends and family. June 2015 I won the TREND magazine award for fitness in it’s Life with Style awards. May 2016 I have evidence that this programme is unique and works for the benefit of the older adult. In September this year I will be on a national stage in Manchester promoting the Train the Trainer programme and a Corporate programme. Prime Mover Pathway has certainly grown up in the last two years.

Books for Dad
Struggling for inspiration this Father’s Day? Forget gift vouchers and gardening tools, books are the way to go. Whether Dad likes escaping into a thriller, getting creative with the kids, or cooking up a storm in the kitchen, there’s sure to be something in our selection to keep him happy. The Den Book – Fiona Danks and Jo Schofield Packed with creative inspiration, The Den Book is full of ideas to encourage Dad to get outside and have fun with the kids (or grandkids). Whether they want a forest hideaway, a fairy tent or a full-on fort, instructions are easy to follow, and many of the dens don’t require any special materials. Published by Frances Lincoln, it costs £12.99, so you should have enough funds left over to invest in some tarpaulin and twine.
The Hairy Bikers Blood, Sweat and Tyres: The Autobiography – Dave Myers and Si King If Dad enjoys an autobiography, this is the perfect book to wrap up for him this Father’s Day. The duo didn’t have the easiest childhoods; Si was bullied about his weight, while Dave had to grow up quickly as a carer for his mother. But a love of good food and entertaining brought them together and made them household names. Warm, honest and laugh-out -loud funny, it’s a great testament to what true friends can do when they put their minds to it.
More Home Comforts – James Martin Aspiring chefs and good honest cooks alike will enjoy this book. As the name implies, it’s packed with ideas for tasty, honest comfort food. Recipes are straightforward, with each step well explained. Most ingredients can be easily picked up at the supermarket, although a few will require a bit more forward planning. More than 100 recipes are included, many of which have been shown in the TV series. Dad will soon be whipping you up Beer Can Piri Piri Chicken, Lamb Belly with BBQ Sauce & Pickled Red Onion, or just some good old chocolate brownies.
Poor Boy Road – James L. Weaver Fast-paced and gripping from the first page, Poor Boy Road is a good bet for fans of action thrillers. Jake Caldwell is a mob-enforcer who’s looking for a way out. When he’s called back to his childhood town to help care for his dying, abusive father, his boss hands him one last job – kill a local drug dealer. But can he do it? Great characters, believable dialogue and plenty of action combine to make this a real page-turner.
Conspiracy – Iain Gale Bernard Cornwell fans will thank you for introducing them to Iain Gale’s series about a maverick soldier in the Peninsular War. James Keane certainly gets himself in enough scrapes and mishaps to keep the reader entertained. Well-researched, gritty and colourful, the series brings a period of military history to life. The latest novel, Conspiracy, sees Keane ordered by Wellington to work undercover in Paris – a dangerous task indeed in such a turbulent political landscape.

TACKLING TROUBLESOME WEEDS Why is it that weeds always seem to grow faster and more vigorously than pretty well anything you actually choose to plant in your garden? Top of my weed hate list is hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta), which produces a little rosette of leaves topped with a short spike with tiny white flowers, and I despise it because it spreads so quickly. Weeds are typically described as ‘any plant which is growing in the wrong place’ such as your flowerbeds, your vegetable garden, your shrubbery or your lawn. So what makes weeds such a nuisance?
•
They feed and take up moisture in great quantities and sometimes compete actively with nearby garden plants.
•
They can create shade and stunt the growth of nearby plants.
•
Those with a ground-cover like effect can cause the growth of garden plants to be distorted or held back.
•
Weeds may harbour pests or diseases.
So what can you do to try to minimise the problems they cause without spending hours with a hoe or sprayer?
•
Get on top of weeds early in the year - removing as many as possible before your garden plants start to grow strongly makes weeding easier and cuts down on the amount of competition the weeds cause. A hoe is one of the quickest ways to effectively kill off most annual weeds, but it needs to be a good one.
•
Disturb the soil as little as possible when you weed to prevent dormant weed seeds from germinating.
•
Some people avoid anything other than an early weeding and a late weeding, as they find that regular weeding seems to bring more seeds to the surface and encourages germination.
•
Remove your weeds before they set seed.

•
Avoid composting any weeds which are setting seed, have set seed or have particularly pernicious and resilient roots (dock and dandelion are classic examples of these).
When removing deep-rooted weeds such as dock and dandelion, always make sure that you take out every fragment of root, as each piece left behind has the potential to form a new plant. The best tool I know for removing dandelion roots is my little red-handled weeder, see www.pippagreenwood.com/products/good-growing for more information.
•
Don’t take a short cut by rotovating ground which is heavily infested with weeds such as dandelions, docks, nettles or couch grass, as you’ll be chopping up their roots and helping to create more plants!
•
If you want to sow annuals or vegetable crops directly and minimise later problems with weeds, then try the stale seedbed technique. Prepare the area you intend to sow well in advance of your proposed seed sowing date, which allows dormant weed seeds to germinate; remove the weed seedlings and then sow or plant up as you wish. This should give you fewer problems later on.
•
Many weeds can be kept at bay if you cover the soil surface with two to three inches (5 – 7.5 cm) of mulch.
•
Use weedkillers with caution and ensure you choose one appropriate for the problem you have. Weedkillers are designed to kill off plants and they can do a lot of damage if allowed to contaminate your garden.
Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com for a really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, ladybirds to control greenfly, Nemaslug, biological controls, popup crop covers, signed books and lots more besides.
