News from the Community Council The start of 2016 has certainly been a challenge for Ellon. Following another hugely successful Gig At The Brig Event the town was subjected to record breaking water levels in the Ythan in the first week of January which unfortunately affected at least 59 homes in the town. The previous record level was witnessed in 2012 and only four years later we experienced serious flooding again. The initial response, led by the emergency services and Aberdeenshire Council, drew widespread praise for the speed and practical help provided. The Community Council worked with Aberdeenshire Council to communicate important messages via social media in the first few days and we hope you found this useful. As the town entered the recovery phase, Aberdeenshire Council involved a number of local bodies to assist with the aftermath and coordinate the many offers of support. This led to the establishment of the AB41 Flood Response Group led by Tom Craggs of the Community Council. We all need to remember that those who were affected may need support for many months to come and the Flood Response Group will remain in place for as long as is necessary. [https://www.facebook.com/ECCfloodresponse] Other matters on the Community Council agenda over the winter have included consideration of the proposed new cemetery. We have lobbied Aberdeenshire Council to consider whether the location opposite the Brewdog factory is in fact now appropriate. Recent planning applications which may see waste disposal plants built next to it have triggered such considerations. The Ellon Christmas Lights event was another major success but the street lights took considerable punishment from storms Abigail and Frank. At least 5 lights were irreparably damaged and had to be removed to protect the public. One of our partners who erects the street lights has also already indicated that they will not be in a position to do so next year. As a result of both of theses factors the Community Council will be evaluating the future shape of the Christmas Lights offering in the town over the next few months. Sandy McDougall

3 new grey electrical cabinets You may have spotted 3 new grey electrical cabinets being installed around the town centre in November. These are new Pop Up Power Supplies which can now be used by any organisation to run an event, stall etc. in the town. Noisy generators and the problems of keeping them topped up with petrol are now a thing of the past. The Community Council and Aberdeenshire Council have been working together for 18 months to fund and install the 3 units. One is in the Market Street car park, one is in Neil Ross Square and one is outside the TSB bank. The unit in Neil Ross Square has already been used for the Christmas lights activities and the Farmers Market and the one at the riverside is used to power the new lights on the trees. The units will help event organisers overcome one of the major hurdles which is how to access a power supply safely. The installation

and units have been funded through Developer Obligations funding which is being used by Aberdeenshire Council and the Community Council to implement a number of improvements to the town centre. The Community Council are the custodians of the units and are responsible for the hire and maintenance. Prospective users can arrange access by contacting the CC and a user’s agreement to cover a nominal charge to cover costs will be provided which will be far less than the cost of hiring and running a generator. Nick Langan, who led the project for the CC said “ We are pleased to see the project to install power supplies for events finally come to fruition and thank Aberdeenshire Council for their support in managing the installation. We hope that this will stimulate more events like the Farmers market which has enlivened the town centre on Saturday mornings” Sandy McDougall

How to Write a CV While it’s tempting to dust off your last CV and just add an extra couple of lines for your current job, sometimes it’s best to start from scratch. There’s a wealth of advice on CV writing to be found on the internet, but to get you started, here are a few of our top tips:

Include a link to your LinkedIn profile, but only if it’s up to date.

Personalise it. Ideally, amend your CV for each job application, making sure you reference any skills that were mentioned in the job description.

Present it well. Use a clear font, make sure everything lines up well, and separate sections with sub-headers. Search online for a template to make it easier.

Keep it brief. There’s no need to detail every job you’ve had if they’re not relevant to the position you’re applying for.

Check for grammar and spelling mistakes, and ask a friend to look over it for you.

Avoid repetition. If you’ve had a similar job role at several companies, there’s no need to keep repeating the same skills. Try to focus on added responsibilities for each role, to show career progression.

Don’t forget the cover letter! The cover letter gives you the chance to really highlight why your skills and experience are relevant to a particular job. Good luck! By Kate Duggan

McDonald Golf Club Pro-Am The 28th McDonald Golf Club Annual Pro-Am tournament will take place at the Club on Friday 29th July this year. Such is the importance of this event to the Club’s finances preparations are already underway. A Pro-Am Committee has been formed and they are now looking for support from business people and individuals throughout Aberdeenshire and beyond to input the event. The Tournament has been going since 1989 and is run by the Scottish Professional Golf Association who are based at Gleneagles. It gives Golf Club members the opportunity to play alongside a Tartan Tour professional and is an interesting insight into the professional game. Over the years the number of teams entering the event has gone down but Ellon Golf Club professional Sandy Aird is confident

Re-mortgaging:

Why there’s never been a better time how to re-evaluate their spending for the coming year. With interest rates still very low across the market, there has never been a better time to do so.

With the festive period over, many individuals will be looking to adjust their finances after overspending throughout Christmas and New Year. Looking forward to the year ahead with new beginnings on the horizon, many individuals turn to address their finances, planning on

A consideration when looking into sorting out finances could be to remortgage property. Mortgage rates tend to be much lower than personal loan and credit card rates, and can in turn, help those struggling to make payments gain control over their finances again after a few hectic months of splurging. Phil Anderson, managing director of Phil Anderson Financial Services Ltd discusses the benefits of

remortgaging and why now is the right time to do so… To make home improvements: Refreshing your home, making home improvements, or adding an extension to your property can help increase the value of it over the long term. By investing smartly in your property, the value of the property will go up and in the long term, individual’s sense of having a clear financial plan will also benefit well-being. Consolidate debts: Over the festive period many people will over-spend and may struggle to pay off

debts such as credit cards. By remortgaging property, this can help clear those debts on high interest fees, as mortgage interest rates are usually much cheaper than credit card fees. However, before doing so, it is advised to discuss this with a mortgage adviser to ensure all monthly mortgage debts can be paid comfortably. Equity release: If your property’s value has risen, then you may be able to have some of its equity released to use where it may financially be needed.

Although the value of your mortgage loan will increase, you will be able to manage other debts accordingly, decreasing the risk of running into trouble with high, unattainable interest rates. You can save more money: It is much easier for individuals to save money when not having to pay excessive credit card interest rates. With a manageable mortgage, it is much easier to save and put money away for future investments. This could include property, children’s education, holidays or extra curricular activities.

www.gazettemagazines.com t : 01224 949085

When considering remortgaging property in settling other debts, it is important to note that the remortgaging process usually takes about one month. However, this can vary under the individual’s circumstances. It is also advised that those looking to remortgage should seek the advice of an independent financial adviser to ensure they get the best deal possible, and can afford the new mortgage payments comfortably. Scents Appeal Buying perfume for a loved one this Valentine’s, or Mother’s Day but don’t have a clue where to start? Read on... We tend to think of perfume as French, but there are some fantastic British fragrance houses. Take Deco London. Launched in 2015, Deco London has created a select range of six fragrances, three for her and three for him. Each one is a real delight, with multiple, complex layers. At £75 a bottle, they’re pricey, but if you’re looking to splash out this Valentine’s, they’re well worth it. Perfume can be split into several ‘types’, although many fragrances cross categories. The main types are:

Floral Feminine and unashamedly romantic, floral perfumes range from ‘sugar and spice’ sweetness to grown-up sophistication. If she likes Beautiful by Estee Lauder, try Kukui by Connock London – a delicious, grown-up blend of gardenia, bergamot and white flowers, that’s warmed by notes of sandalwood, vetiver and white amber. (You may have guessed that it has pride of place on my bedside table.)

12

Please do mention ab41 when responding to advertisers - thank you

Citrus Fresh, vibrant and invigorating, citrus based fragrances are fun and light-hearted. Think scents of lemon, grapefruit, mandarin, and other refreshing notes. If she likes Happy by Clinique, she’ll love Miller Harris’s Citron Citron.

Fruity Similar to citrus scents, fruity fragrances are uplifting and cheerful. If she has a bottle of DKNY’s Be Delicious at hand, try surprising her with Jo Malone’s English Pear and Freesia cologne.

Oriental Exotic, sensual scents that demand attention, oriental fragrances are warm and rich, with notes of musk, vanilla and amber. They were all the rage in the 80s, but these days tend to be softened slightly with other scents, such as floral notes. If she’s a fan of Angel by Thierry Mugler, try Deco London’s Constance.

Woody/chypre Warm and musky, with hints of sandalwood, cedar, vetiver and moss, these fragrances conjure up images of walking through a forest at sunset. If she loves spritzing on Miss Dior, treat her to Vanilla and Cedarwood by Kiehl’s.

Oceanic Invigorating, refreshing and easy to wear, ‘oceanic’ covers a wide range of ‘clean smelling’ fragrances, from crisp white linen to ocean spray. If she’s a fan of Cool Water Woman by Davidoff , treat her to Inis by Fragrances of Ireland. People have been dabbing on fragrances for thousands of years. In Cyprus, evidence has been unearthed that perfume was being manufactured at least 4,000 years ago. It’s played an important role in cultures and religious occasions across the world, so it’s no surprise that one of the gifts the three wise men chose was myrrh – an essential oil used predominately for its scent. Which Pillow?

the shortest life span.

You might spend hundreds on a comfortable new bed, but did you know your pillow can impact on your quality of sleep and your general health and wellbeing? A good pillow should hold your head in alignment with your shoulders and spine to guard against potential neck or back pain. The correct choice depends on your body shape and preferred sleeping position. If a tummy sleeper, go for a softer, lower pillow. Back sleepers need a medium thickness pillow and side sleepers should opt for a medium-high thickness. You then have a range of fillings to choose from. Synthetic pillows are cheap and good for allergy sufferers but they flatten quite quickly and have

Feather pillows last longer, are inexpensive, soft and easy to shape but sometimes the feathers poke through and they are not good for allergy sufferers. Down pillows are similar but softer, more luxurious - and more expensive! Memory foam pillows retain their shape, offer good support and are durable, but they can be heavy and hot. Latex pillows are cooler and more airy than memory foam and are also soft and supportive, but they can be expensive. Other fillings include micro bead, water, buckwheat and wool. So, before you buy your next pillows, shop around first and explore all the options! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Thank You.

Ladies and Gentleman by attending this special dinner, you will be helping Royal Marines like Paul Barrett to move forward onto the life they so richly deserve. I believe they were and in some cases have sacrificed much in our country’s name, I also believe they have earned the right to our help.

I also have a close relationship with 45 Commando RM, where a few years ago a garden of remembrance and reflection was built, I was delighted to help with this project. This garden is a place where the marines can spend time, as well as remember those who have fallen in the service of our Nation. Many of those who’s names are on the memorial I knew well. Recently I stood there with Colour Sgt Paul Barrett who was profoundly wounded in Afghanistan. As we looked at the names on the memorial whom we both knew Paul said, “Catherine, my name should be on there” Paul then said, “I owe it to those marines who did not come home to live the very best life that I can” and he does, Paul Barrett is a credit to the Corps, his family and those of us who care deeply about him. If you ask Paul Barrett who has helped him through his recovery plan, he will quickly say the Corps, family, friends and the RMCTF.

A donation will be made to the Royal Marine Charitable Trust Fund. A silent auction will also be conducted to help raise valuable funds.

Air Commodore Andy Hine OBE MA RAF

Catherine is relentless in her pursuit of offering kindness and material assistance to Servicemen, especially those who have fallen on hard times. She is fiercely proud of the United Kingdom’s Armed Forces and all that they have done for our nation. She is equally determined that they rightfully receive the support and respect that she feels they deserve and she has dedicated her whole life to this cause. We are very lucky to have benefited from her boundless and unceasing energy, compassion and commitment.”

Catherine is also very impartial in her attitude towards the Royal Navy, the British Army and the Royal Air Force. She will support anyone in difficulty no matter what his or her background.

One story perhaps best describes what Catherine stands for. She made a promise to a very badly injured Royal Marine that she would help him climb Ben Nevis if his injuries ever stabilised enough to allow him to have a go. Sure enough, three years later and in foul weather, Catherine and a group of Royal Marines made the climb up and down Ben Nevis, allowing this injured gentleman to fulfil his ambition in spite of significant physical difficulties. When Catherine makes a promise, she sees it through.

For Catherine it is not merely about raising funds, it is far more. She gives up her home so that Service people and their families might enjoy holidays; she travels the length and breadth of the United Kingdom just to be with Servicemen who need a helping hand; she takes Servicemen to and from medical appointments; she networks feverishly with influential people and organisations, never for herself but always for those who have served their country.

It has been one of the greatest privileges of my life to have been made to feel part of the family that is the Royal Marines. Those who serve do so with great courage and commitment. Along the way I have gained many sons who have continued our relationship long after they have left the Corps.

Thank you for taking the time to read the information on this wonderful dinner onboard HMY Britannia on Saturday, 5th March 2016.

“I have known Catherine Robertson Ross MBE for many years. During this time I have seen her in action on a number of occasions raising funds for various Service charities and more generally, supporting current or retired Servicemen and women in many different ways.

When it comes to supporting the Armed Forces, Catherine is the most committed individual I have met in my 30 years of service. Helping disadvantaged Servicemen and Servicewomen is her passion, it is her life.

Reading, Writing and Numbers Through Aberdeenshire Council’s Community Learning and Development (CLD), there is a free and confidential service to help people with reading, writing and numbers. It is delivered by the Ellon CLD team, however it is available throughout the whole of Aberdeenshire (through CLD) for any member of our communities who could benefit from our support.. Examples of people we have given support to are: »» Parents who are not coping with their children’s homework due to their own lack of skills and confidence. »» Farmers who are needing to improve (and in some cases learn from the basic level) reading, writing and numbers due to changes in processes and legislation the amount of paperwork they are required to do has changed dramatically over the past 10/15 years. »» Engineers/Oil industry/Construction workers who gain promotion and move into management and then need to seek help as they do not have the literacy skills to flourish and progress. »» Care workers: who are now required to gain SQA qualifications, where in the past they would of managed with very low levels of literacy. »» Lower level catering workers who now need to obtain qualifications such as Food Hygiene, where previously they would have not required to read and write over and above labels etc. »» Young adults who through no fault of their own have had a disjointed education due to their family travelled because they were in the Forces, but are now finding it difficult to gain employment or access to college »» Young adults who have been in care and often have a patchy education due to moving homes. People come to us for many reasons. We have had adults in their 50’s and 60’s who have lived their lives hiding the fact that they are illiterate, however in this changing world of technology it is becoming harder to hide. Whilst public stigma is perhaps lowering due to campaigns, in the 70’s and 80’s like “On the Move” and “The Big Plus”, an individual who has literacy issues will often feel isolated, lack confidence and have a deep feeling of low self-esteem and selfworth. It is demoralising and often people with so much potential will struggle to see what they can achieve as they have been told from a young age that they are “stupid”.

We also offer support to people who struggle with English as a second or third language. They may have moved here through work, poverty, marriage and really need support to learn the language so they can integrate in the community and become an active citizen. Recently this has been the case due to oil workers returning home due to cuts in contracts and often families who only speak Portuguese or Chinese find themselves in a rural community and completely detached. To run this valuable service we have a team of amazing volunteers who give up their time to be trained and supported to deliver 1:1 sessions with those who need it. In Ellon we have just completed a training programme called SALL (Support for Adult Learning) and have ten new volunteers joining our existing team, and they are ready to get out there and help others Vikki Carpenter Community Learning and Development Worker

Garden View Lovely Lilies (and a spot of hard-pruning)

The first day of spring this year is officially March 20th . Trees are blossoming and daffodils are in bloom. The garden has woken up from its winter sleep and is full of promise. But promise is not enough. A beautiful garden does not happen by chance. So what are the top jobs for March gardeners? Pruning features large! Hard-prune those late flowering shrubs like Buddleia, Leycesteria and Lavateria, but only if the risk of heavy frost is past. Spring-flowering plants such as Forsythia and Winter Honeysuckle should be pruned immediately the flowers fade. If you haven’t already pruned your bush roses, now is the time. Leave about an inch of last year’s growth to encourage bushiness and lots of flowers. Shrub roses don’t need such radical treatment but would benefit from losing a third of their old, thick, woody stems.

I’ve found terracotta pots best because they provide enough weight to prevent these tall plants tipping over. Lilies need an open planting mixture which drains well so I use a mixture of potting compost plus a soil-less multi-purpose compost. The bulb tips should be a couple of inches below the compost. Keep in a sheltered spot and water when the surface of the compost looks dry. Once the buds have formed, feed weekly with dilute tomato food until late summer. When the blooms fade, cut the stems down and place in a sheltered spot. Each spring, scrape away a couple of inches of compost and add fresh mixture, then repeat the instructions above. Treated like this your lilies will reward you for three or four years before they need re-potting. There are a plethora of colours and scents available, so there is a lily for everyone. Try them. I guarantee you’ll be as in love with lilies as I am.

Lift congested clumps of snowdrops while they still have leaves showing. Finally, stay on top of the weeds. If you leave them, weeding quickly becomes an insurmountable chore. Ok, we’ve dispensed with the hard work, now it’s time to look ahead.

By Rachel Leverton

I have one word for you...Lilies. I always thought they were tricky to grow, and so they proved, mainly because my garden doubles as a slug sanctuary! Then I had an epiphany. It dawned on me that if I grew them in pots, slug prevention would be easier, plus I didn’t run the risk of slicing through the fat, scaly bulbs or tender shoots with my hoe while enthusiastically weeding my plot. Even better, it means you can grow them even if you only have a balcony. There are loads of varieties in the garden centres right now. Three bulbs fit nicely into an 8inch / 20cm pot and five fit into a ten inch / 25cm pot. www.gazettemagazines.com t : 01224 949085

The Addictive Fitbit Want to make sure you’re completing your 10,000 steps a day, or looking to improve your training? An activity tracker can help. The FitBit is probably the best known brand on the market, with several models to choose from: The entry level Zip, at around £50, tracks your steps, distance walked and calories burned. “So it’s a fancy pedometer then?” I hear you ask. Well, yes, basically, but it’s more responsive and you can sync it to your computer or smartphone to see your activity presented as a graph. This makes it much easier to monitor your activity levels over time and track you progress. The Zip also acts as a watch, and there are various other extras, such as the ability to log your food intake. Feel like you’re getting your full eight hours of sleep, but still feel tired? You might want to opt for One or Flex, which track your sleep as well as your activity. They also have silent alarms, to wake you up, but not your partner. One clips onto your clothing, while Flex is worn like a watch. There are some differences in what they offer – Flex doesn’t have a clock, for example. Charge is similar to Flex, in that you wear it like a watch, but it comes with some added extras, such as a clock. If your phone is nearby and it rings, the caller ID will come up on the Charge display. It also has a better battery life, of up to 10 days. Charge HR is designed for people who work out regularly, as it can recognise different exercises, and has an automatic heart-rate monitor to help maximise your training. Top of the range is Surge, at around £200. It’s been designed for people who are really serious about their sports performance, and want to monitor every aspect of their training. For instance, you can track the route you’re running using GPS. You can also control music and read texts that come through to your smartphone. So which one to go for? Well Zip is a great choice if you just want to check whether you’re walking those recommended 10,000 steps a day. If you cycle, run, or enjoy another sport, you’ll want to opt for a more advanced model. Now, a warning… It is possible to get ever so slightly obsessed with the FitBit. You can easily find yourself checking it hundreds of times a day, which can distract you from real life, and you can find yourself pushing ever harder, unnecessarily. On the positive side, it does encourage you to increase your activity levels and build up your fitness. Like so much in life, the key is moderation. Tempted? Head to: www.fitbit.com

ClubGolf coaching classes Immediately after the Easter holidays, McDonald Golf Club in Ellon will once again be offering ClubGolf coaching classes for children of primary 5 school age. McDonald Golf Club will also welcome back those who wish to complete the second year of the basic two year course. A third year may also be available dependent on numbers and availability of coaches. The classes last one hour and 15 minutes and are run by qualified coaches and the Club Professional, Sandy Aird, at three different times – 3.45, 5.00 and 6.15. Full details will be in a letter issued to primary school pupils just before the Easter holidays. Some primary 5 pupils may get FirstClubGolf experience in school with plastic clubs and tennis balls before that but ClubGolf itself uses appropriately sized, real golf clubs and balls at McDonald Golf Club on a Thursday evening after school – the golf clubs and balls are provided by the club for those who do not have their own. The full course of coaching covers all the basic aspects of golf and extends over two years. Each year there are 19 or 20 lessons split between two sessions 1) the weeks between Easter and summer holidays and 2) the weeks between the summer and the October holidays – some children spend their holidays practising what they have learnt either on the course or on the short game practice area at the club.

you need to email enns@hotmail.co.uk for a sellers number (these are limited to 50). When you get a sellers number we also send an information sheet on how to price up your goods and when to drop off and collect your goods. Any unsold items are returned to the seller after the sale. Two weeks later a cheque for the items sold is sent to the seller minus the % we take. This % covers the cost of running the sale (hall costs, hire of tills etc.) and any profit is given to charities, good causes or in answer to any Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) appeal. The original group that started the sales had all know each other through the NCT and had helped run their nearly new sales. We launched the sales as Ellon Nearly New Sales in March 2005 in response to the fund raising for the Boxing Day Tsunami, originally our plan was only to do this one but we enjoyed it so much that we are still going. We've generally done 2 per year March and September. To date we have donated over £16,000 to local charities, good causes and DEC appeals and we've sent out cheques totalling over £43,000 to sellers.
