ELLON PEDAL CAR RACE - SUNDAY 30 AUGUST 2014 Cheering crowds will once again be expected to fill the streets of Ellon on Sunday 30th August when teams from local groups and businesses provide thrills and spills in the sixth Ellon Pedal Car Race, organised by the Rotary Club of Ellon. The event sees a 700 metre circuit around the town centre being closed to vehicular traffic and the day will get off to a racing start with cycling events, for age groups from under 8s to under 16s, organised by the Ythan Cycle Club under the auspices of Scottish Cycling and sponsored by Scottish Power. These ‘closed road races’ are rare in cycling circles and attract entries from all over Scotland. This year an added attraction, still focused on the racing theme, will be the introduction of two age group mile long road races organised by the Ellon Athletics Club in conjunction with Ellon Jog Scotland. As with the cycle races these are expected to draw large entries. Then along comes, the Ellon Pedal Car Race, which once again will see a variety of entries, some featuring fast cars and some with slower or more sedate and colourful models. The focus of the day is on family fun, with stalls in the Market Street car park offering a range of treats and activities, providing a fun and entertaining event for everyone to enjoy. Local firm James Jamieson Ardlethen Developments Ltd has come on board as this year’s main sponsor and the main charity to be supported will be the Friends of the Special Nursery at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital. Company representative Gemma Cameron stated “This is a cause very dear to me and I am delighted we were asked to be main sponsor this year. As a local company it is great to put something back into the community on a day which has previously attracted great interest in the town.” Rotarian Mike Watson who chairs the Pedal Car Race Committee said, “Having James Jamieson support the event as main sponsor is great news for us and we are delighted to support Gemma’s choice of charity to benefit from monies raised. It is intended to split proceeds between the Friends of the Special Nursery and local good causes as identified by the Ellon Rotary. Previous events have attracted good crowds and with added attractions this time round we fully expect another fun packed day”. Town centre roads around Market Street, Bridge Street to Station Road and Station Road to The Square will be closed between 9.00am and 5.00pm with diversions in place

o you suffer from episodes of back or neck pain? Do you need to improve your posture and flexibility? Have you had hip or knee pain when you are running? Have you been told by your doctor or another health professional that you might benefit from Pilates classes, but haven’t been quite sure what it is? Pilates is a low impact form of exercise designed to strengthen the deep abdominal and gluteal muscles, which all help to support our lower back and hips. A strong core provides your body with a strong, stable base from which to move. Pilates also includes exercises to strengthen the postural muscles of the neck and upper back, and spinal flexibility exercises to ensure that you gain movement as well as strength. The original Pilates exercises were designed by Joseph Pilates in the 1960’s. More recently, the APPI (Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute) pioneered a modified program of exercises based on the original repertoire, designed for everybody, and which can also be very useful for rehabilitation back to full strength following injury. Pilates is a suitable exercise for anyone, whatever your age or activity level. Some of the benefits of practicing Pilates regularly might include improved body awareness, core and overall strength, relaxation, improved sport performance and improved management of lower/middle/ upper back pain. It can also be useful in injury prevention. Laura McKay is a Chartered, HPC Registered specialist musculoskeletal Physiotherapist and is also an APPI exam certified Pilates instructor. She has been teaching Pilates classes since 2012 and runs LC PhysiotheraPilates which delivers physiotherapist led Pilates classes in Ellon.

www.gazettemagazines.com t : 01224 949085

Physiotherapists rehabilitate clients using exercise therapy every day. Their expert knowledge, and training with the APPI allows them to modify exercises to suit the individual client within a class, which ensures that every client is working at a level appropriate to them. Laura runs Pilates classes in Ellon on Fridays at 10am-11am (Ellon Kirk Centre) and 11.30am -12.30pm (Victoria Hall). Although challenging, the classes are relaxed and fun at the same time. Full details of LC PhysiotheraPilates timetable and how to book your space in a class can be found on the website www.physiotherapilates.co.uk Alternatively, you can contact Laura directly by emailing laura@physiotherapilates.co.uk or calling 07734312798.

THISTLE CATERING SERVICES How many Ellon business owners can name The Queen, Princess Anne and The Rolling Stones on their Client Portfolio.? Step forward Lorraine Smith boss of Thistle Catering Services. Based on the Castle Road Industrial Estate, Lorraine and her team of 4 are a fast growing Event Catering Company. Lorraine is originally from Fraserburgh and after leaving school at 16 she worked in a local fish factory for 4 years. Attending college during this time she gained a Diploma in Administration. Then through Open University obtained a Bachelor of Science degree. Working in the local Fraserburgh Council offices the first sign of her entrepreneurial skill surfaced when she bought two Ice Cream vans whilst also selling Baby Wear locally. In year 2000 she moved to Edinburgh, working with Scottish Blood Transfusion and after a visit to Ingleston Market came a possible’ Eureka’ moment when she bought a Burger van and saw the major role that food played in the general public’s life. From then on it was Food Glorious Food that was top of Lorraine’s agenda and she ventured into catering. After starting with small weddings and functions her first ‘Big’ venture was a Rolling Stones concert at Murrayfield Stadium. ‘The whole experience was daunting ‘ says www.gazettemagazines.com t : 01224 949085

Lorraine ‘but we learned so much from it.’ Then after moving back to the North East in 2004 working in the NHS and based in Banff she had a real personal setback when she contacted Breast cancer. Thankfully she has now fully recovered. Thistle continue to do a fair bit of charity work and Clan especially is a regular benefactor. It was after this setback the Fraserburgh quine then took over the running of the Aden Country Park coffee shop whilst also running a Fish and Chip shop in Fraserburgh. But it was the next step in her business life which was massive when the very ambitious Lorraine took over one of the Industrial Business Units in Ellon to re locate Thistle Catering Services. An empty shell soon became the busy hub it is today as Thistle grew . ‘Because of our good service we get a lot of repeat business ‘says Lorraine ‘ also many of our clients recommend Thistle to other companies and organisations’ The Queen’s Jubilee Tea Party in Duthie Park, The Aboyne Games, Newtonmore Highland Games, Aberdeen Hogmanay Street Party , The Portsoy Traditional Boat Festival, A Private Lunch for Princeess Anne at Belwade, Aboyne. These are just some of the wide range of events that Thistle have very successfully catered at over the years. Having recently been awarded the prestigious Scottish Weddings Independent Caterer of the Year, North of Scotland award. It’s now onwards and upwards for this AB41 company. ELLON CIVIC PRIDE ‘Blooming Marvellous’ said Ellon Civic Pride co-ordinator Frances Watson when asked about Ellon’s floral displays for 2015.. Frances and her dedicated band of volunteers are kept really busy at this time of year keeping Ellon florally beautiful. floral displays in the town. As co-ordinator Frances has a committee of six who are responsible for the decision making of Ellon Civic Pride with each one like- minded in trying to make Ellon a better place. ‘We have around 30 active volunteers to thank for making this happen’ says Frances ‘ but I must highlight the help of Norman Fraser and Bill Gibb for their work with grass cutting, thereassistance really helps our group’. ‘I want to see Ellon looking well all the year round but especially during the period from May till September when our hanging basket flowers are in full bloom.’ Anyone wishing to help or contact Ellon Civic Pride can contact Frances on 01358 721806.

a result of local business people trying to improve the environment and town image by displaying hanging baskets of flowers. ‘Each year with our displays we try our best to make Ellon a better place to live, work and grow up in’ says Frances. Although generally well supported by local business people and organisations Frances would still like a few more people to take up her offer of a hanging basket of locally grown flowers at a cost of only £25-00. Aberdeenshire Council grow the flowers at their Aden Country Park nursery then hand them over to Ellon and other towns and villages for display. Frances and her volunteers are then responsible for the upkeep and tidiness of the baskets throughout the town. Bananas ‘The kids liking me is a very important factor in the running of my business” says Carol Ann Taylor , Owner of local company Bananas Entertainment.

Bananas is a small personalised company who specialise in organising and running Fun Days. ‘We can cater for small children’s parties, large individual group events or company fun days ‘says Carol Ann . ‘We generally tailor our presentation to suit our client’s needs or requests’. Bananas can supply and include in their Fun Day presentations Bouncy Castles, Balloon Modelling, Face Painting , Sumo Wrestling , Gladiators and Circus Skills. The Company base which is Logierieve just outside Ellon, was started in 2006 and Carol Ann and her staff have been busy every year since, especially during the Summer months. Carol Ann’s journey to Ellon has been a real roundabout one.She was born in Vancouver, Canada to Irish parents who had emigrated from Ballymoney in 1968 principally to escape the troubles in Northern Ireland. Her dad worked in the Insurance Industry but was also a Part Time actor and he did in fact appear in numerous Movies alongside such famous names as Robert Redford, Warren Beattie, Harvey Keitel and Paul Newman. However , Carol Ann , her mother and 2 brothers came back to Scotland in … and based themselves in Nairn before moving to Kinloss, Hopeman and then Kingston on Spey. It was while attending Milnes High School in Fochabers that Carol Ann developed an early love of Painting and Theatre encouraged by her teacher Donald Morrison.

plays and generally becoming slightly obsessed with all things creative and especially theatre. As she grew older the bug didn’t leave her and she then enrolled at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen. Whilst there she organised small festival events , theatre and community projects Later she joined the ‘Wise Up’ theatre group. This was political ‘Street’ theatre written and performed by the adult cast. From there she also toured Scotland and Northern Ireland in Education tours , wrote and performed in Theatre Tapsalteerie, The Invisible Bouncers and created an all female comedy sketch company called Babe Alert. After a few adventures with a Children’s Entertainment company similar to Bananas, Carol Ann spent a couple of years in Vancouver, Canada doing a course in Make Up artistry for Film and TV work. From these experiences, along with close friend Nancy Rioch she then formed the ‘Play Fools ’ group which allowed young children to unleash their potential in a real theatre atmosphere.’ Nancy now works in Edinburgh’ says Carol Ann ‘where she now puts her Aberdeen experience to good use working directly for the ‘Edinburgh Military Tattoo.’ Branching out on her own after the ‘PlayFools’ joint venture, Bananas was born. Summing up on the pressures and enjoyment of running her own business Carol Ann says her 6 year old son Jay ‘just loves watching his mum making people laugh. And what’s more she added ‘I myself just love people smiling whilst going bananas with Bananas Entertainment’. www.bananaszone.co.uk Ring: 07876 157785/or 01651 842770 Colin Grant Senior

‘I really looked up to Mr Morrison “says Carol Ann “and I believe this is where I became really interested in the Arts and Theatre “

She recalls reading poetry, appearing in school

WALKING FOOTBALL Walking Football is fast becoming the game to play for those of a certain vintage. All over the country more and more football enthusiasts are taking to the Beautiful Game as a way of keeping themselves active and fit. The games are played sometimes between 4 or 5 players each side and although the games are competitive, very little tackling takes place. Walking Football will start up again in September in the Games Hall at the Ellon Meadows Sports Centre . The organisers will make anyone who comes along more than welcome. One thing for sure is the guarantee an hour and a bit of football fun. Contact number... (m) 07809 554691

Ladymire Equestrian Centre The centre is situated on the out skirts of Ellon, just off the bypass, 2 miles from Ellon town centre. We started off some years ago and with hard work and a great team the centre has steadily developed, providing riding for all ages and standards. We are very proud of our horses and ponies they are fun characters who always try their best to please. There daily work means meeting all types of people, young and old. Whoever you are they provide a safe well trained mount that will look after you. The centre is set in the banks of the Ythan and part of Logie Estates, the countryside is beautiful, with lots of wildlife making hacking a fantastic experience, wild deer and red squirrels often pop out of the woods to say hello and then scarper back off, Otters can often be seen in the river and playing on the banks whilst you hack alongside. When the weather is less favourable which as we know it can be in Scotland we have an indoor riding arena to keep the weather at bay. This allows us all year riding, our outdoor arena and private riding tracks offer a quiet and safe environment for all. We also provide for birthday parties and other special occasions and are always open to other ideas. So if you are of a mind to give riding a go and meet the Ladymire Team please give us a call, come and see us and enjoy the experience

» We cater for all standards of rider from those who have never ridden before, to the accomplished serious rider. » We cater for all ages starting around 3 yrs old and no upper limit. » A friendly environment for everyone. » Well trained safe horses and ponies. » Fully licenced and insured. » Riders can join our private saddle club, training how to ride and care for your horses and ponies.
