Editorial At the submission deadline for this issue, I was harassing contributors to submit promptly (thank you!) as, at the beginning of October, I went on holiday. We are lucky to be visiting Japan, South Korea and China. I’ve been enjoying Ronnie Watt’s recent contributions about his trip to Japan and, in this issue, he writes about a visit of Japanese children to Aberdeen. Quite a cultural contrast for them! My guide-books are dog-eared as I want to make sure I see all the sights and prepare for the fascinating cultural experience ahead. We leave just as Autumn is settling in and will just be packing our bags to come home at Halloween. The Great Wall and the Forbidden City will make a welcome change from pumpkins, ghouls and, of course, Brexit. We leave China for home on 1st November and as we are unable to use google in China, will we know whether the UK is still in the EU or not? I think, in this case, I’ll ignore the iniquity of censorship and will aim to keep myself in the dark; allow myself to be surprised. As for “Get ready for Brexit”? My preparation will be wearing comfy shoes in case I have to stand in the predicted queues at entry to the EU, (Amsterdam) and the UK, at Aberdeen.

However long they are, we will of course, be back in time to enjoy the local Christmas festivities arranged for the MBC area. The CBM Community Council members give a great deal of their time to organise events and make our little part of the world a welcoming place to be. The Christmas Lights Switch-on is becoming a regular event and the ever-popular Carol Concert is the perfect tonic to get in the festive mood. See inside for details of both.

This is also the perfect time of year to visit our local retailers for that ‘special something’ and support our local businesses.

Whatever your plans over the Christmas holidays, I wish you, our readers, advertisers and contributors, a lovely time and very best wishes for 2020.

CULTS BIELDSIDE AND MILLTIMBER COMMUNITY COUNCIL News from the Cults Bieldside and Milltimber Community Council Unfortunately, long term Community Councillor, Sarah Gordon. has decided to step down from the council due to pressure of work. Sarah has been a very active team member, especially in the Footpath and Heritage groups and she deserves a big thank you for all the work she has done for the community in the past years.

I hope you had the opportunity to attend the many events organised by the MBC Festival committee this year. With a number of new initiatives this festival has been refreshed and should remain a summer fixture to look out for each year. Many thanks to the committee.

Another successful (late) summer festival in our area is making a name for itself; The Deeside Local Food Festival. The number and variety of the offerings during this one-day festival continue to amaze me, and Rachel Gambro and the Mixing Bowl group should be complimented on their achievement. These are events that make our community a happy and lively place in which to live.

I’d like to continue the theme I addressed in the last issue of MBC News. The Community Council organized another safety event on the Old Deeside Line in September; this time during commuting hours. It was found that users of the path at this time felt a little safer than the weekend users, but overall still one in five of the intensive users and one in four of walkers and users over 40,

felt, at least sometimes, unsafe on the path. This is cause for serious concern and a strong reason for continuing our efforts to change behaviour of users.

Note that tolerance cannot be achieved on demand but should be the result of an invitational process by ALL users of the path. A full report will be shown on the CBMCC website.

Regrettably CBMCC was unsuccessful in two applications for outside funding of projects that we felt would improve the quality of life in our community.

Applications to the city’s Health Improvement Fund to install information on defibrillators in bus-stops and to the Community Resilience Fund of SSEN to develop a smart phone app to alert residents to emergency situations, were both turned down.

With the festive period coming up, I am looking forward to the Christmas events organised by CBMCC. On 23rd November, you are invited to the Christmas Lights Switch-on event in the Cults Kirk Centre. Lindsay Davidson has been busy to make sure the event will be even better than last year. And there will be another eight lights in the area as well.

Then, on 2nd December the annual Carol Concert at the Cults square takes place, where you can sing your heart out. There will be the usual trimmings; all organised by Colin Caldow.

Finally, I wish you all, on behalf of the Community Council, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year when it comes.

CULTS BIELDSIDE AND MILLTIMBER COMMUNITY COUNCIL Planning Matters!

The last quarter has been fairly quiet with 39 new planning applications but with a noticeable uptick in activity following the end of the holiday season.

Most continue to be for extensions or garages in existing properties, but more than a quarter were for work on protected trees due to disease or damage.

I am often asked how to find information from Aberdeen City Council (ACC) about a planning application. The ACC planning website is easy to navigate and has powerful search facilities (much better than their main website!). Start by going to: https:// publicaccess.aberdeencity.gov.uk/onlineapplications/ If you already have the 6-digit reference for the application enter this in the box at the bottom of the page and this will take you directly to the application.

Alternatively, you can enter a suitable partial

address, postcode or keyword and you will receive a list of possible candidates which should include the application that you want. Select that and a page similar to the picture, bottom left. (I have anonymised it!)

The ‘Details’ tab gives you a summary of key information including contacts and important dates. ‘Comments’ allows you to support or object to the application. Don’t worry – this route is just as valid as a separate letter or e-mail. Whatever method you choose, be aware that your comment will then be available under the ‘Documents’ tab to public view. Under ‘Documents’ you can also access and download all the documents associated with the application, including specialist comments from other council departments and outside statutory agencies. Each page has a link near the top right-hand corner to obtain contextual help if you are uncertain of anything. I hope that you find this very short tutorial helpful.

Major Developments in Our Area: Binghill House – Following the public consultation in June, we understand that the developers are working on a scaled-down proposal to include only the redevelopment of Binghill House as a care home and the new retirement-friendly properties within its curtilage.

This would remove the proposed development of the farmland East of Binghill House which was deemed “unsuitable” for inclusion in the 2022 Aberdeen Local Development Plan; a recommendation which the community council supported. By the time you read this we hope to have met the developers to discuss the revised proposals in more detail.

Contlaw Road – The Stewart Milne Group (SM) proposal for 30 homes, of which eight would be affordable, was approved by the ACC Planning Committee in August.

The level of developer contributions will be as previously set out and two new pedestrian crossing points will be provided on Contlaw Road. We await feedback from SM on how the long-term viability of the proposed Community Woodland Trust and maintenance of the play park equipment within the development will be assured.

Meanwhile SM is working on the Section 75 legal agreement for the development.

Countesswells – The construction of Phase 1 development, around 1260 homes, continues. All four developers are working on the site – Stewart Milne Group, Kirkwood Homes, Barratts and CHAP - and Hillcrest Housing Association will be taking some of the properties. Work continues on the west access road which will link to Kingswells roundabout and replace the existing C128c and is expected to be complete around end-2019. Meanwhile through traffic has been diverted from the existing road into a circuitous route around the development. The presence of new steel barriers on the closed section of the original route suggests that it is unlikely to reopen before the new link is completed.

We commented to ACC on our concern that the development of a small retail cluster around a road junction in Areas C3 and C4 could lead to inappropriate parking, creating danger to pedestrians. Meanwhile Barratts’ application to progress Area N6 has been approved conditionally.

We would be interested to hear from Countesswells residents about their experience with the new shuttle bus service.

Inchgarth Road Development of Retirement Housing and Care Home– The application continues on its way through the planning process and the developer has delivered a substantial amount of new information in recent months. ACC Roads Department appears to be comfortable with the proposed link road between North Deeside Road and Inchgarth Road.

Land behind Bieldside House and Bieldside Lodge – We submitted a strong objection to ACC to the proposed use of the Deeside Way for construction access to build a new house below Bieldside House. The overwhelming majority of public comments were also against this use. We understand that a permanent ban on vehicle access to the Way (apart from essential maintenance and emergency vehicles) is being considered by ACC. Milltimber South – Bancon Homes has advised us that they are now working jointly alongside the Dr William Guild’s Managers of the Seven Incorporated Trades of Aberdeen

to develop a masterplan for site OP114, North Deeside Road. Consideration is now being given to a fresh appraisal of the site, and there will, in due course, be public consultation ahead of any masterplan or planning application, allowing the community to view and comment on the proposals.

Oldfold Farm – The planning application for the new Milltimber Primary School has been approved following public consultation.

CALA hopes to submit an application for Phase 3 (136 houses) of the development during the autumn, subject to a review of the timing of the overall development.

Ryden continues to market the proposed ‘mixed-use community facilities’ on behalf of the Seven Incorporated Trades who are the landowners. CALA is seeking to revert to their original proposal to have these in place before 400 houses are built and their application for this is still pending with ACC. We continue to be very interested to hear from Milltimber residents to gauge what the level of support for a local store or other facility such as a coffee shop or garden centre would be.

Care Home next to Marcliffe Hotel – This is a new proposal for a 65-bed care home to be located east of the Marcliffe. Although this proposal lies just outside our community council area, we expressed concern to ACC about the potential additional load on local medical practices and made the general point that much better linkage is needed between development and health service planning. We also sought to ensure that pedestrian visitors to the care home would be safeguarded from hotel and North Deeside Road traffic.

Discussion with the various property owners has progressed and the council is developing proposals for the purchase of properties it does not own. The City Council is planning for a successful place: - Embracing Culture, City centre living, completing the urban quarter - Historic assets to be preserved - New build flexibility - Connecting the city - Service demand integration – public sector design opportunities, working with Police and NHS. Expect to see more greenery in the area but it will not be a park area.

News from Councillors As a direct consequence of the poor fabric condition of the Aberdeen Gallery, the grand opening of the now refurbished art venue was delayed for two years. Some surprises were revealed during the project including architectural treasures in the structure of the building and more recent adornments that had remained hidden for decades. The names of the tradesmen who worked on the original building have also been uncovered! The Aberdeen Art Gallery, in its completely revised layout designed to rival the best in Scotland, was opened to much acclaim on 2 November 2019.

Most agree it was well worth the wait. The historic building first opened to the public in 1883, has increased the number of galleries from 10 to 22 which will allow much more of the extensive, unique art collection to be displayed. Interactive display facilities together with translation into ‘signing’ language will form key elements of the refurbished venue. The entire collection cared for by Aberdeen Art Gallery and museums is a recognized collection of national significance, awarded by museums galleries Scotland on behalf of the Scottish Government.

The Union Terrace Gardens (UTG) project will see the development of three new buildings and walkway structures, path network and improved events space, together with landscaping and restoration of Union Terrace arches. Refurbished Victorian toilets will add icing to the UTG cake! In an attempt to de-risk the project buildout considerable ground survey work has been carried out. The extensive UTG work is scheduled to be completed by summer 2021.

Aberdeen City Council’s Roads Winter Service Plan has evolved over many years and has been amended to reflect both national and local requirements. This year’s amendments have been made to reflect the phased Scottish Government funding as a direct consequence of the AWPR opening. A consequence of the AWPR opening is the de-trunking of major routes, and hence considerable additions to the ACC managed roads network.

This year’s approved winter maintenance plan will ensure all grit bins will be available for public use, with a telephone number to call allowing ACC to be informed of the grit bin location when it becomes empty. One-tonne bags of salt will be issued on request to Community groups for self-help winter treatment. These bags will be issued and replenished on condition that they are situated in a secure location which is accessible to the Council delivery lorry.

A communal area such as a car park would not be acceptable as the bags could be susceptible to theft or vandalism. Additionally, a number of smaller bags will be offered to the person requesting the one-tonne bag to aid distribution of the salt in the community.

Individual salt buckets containing approximately 10kg of salt will be available from depots. The 10kg should be sufficient to treat the footway fronting a property for a number of days. Early morning

patrols will be run from 11 November through to 16 March 2020.

After priority routes have been cleared, and when lying snow persists, this will be tackled on an area basis in accordance with the following order: Cults/Bieldside roads tackled in the sequence NORTH - Countesswells Road; SOUTH - River Dee; EAST Craigton Road / Pitfodels Station Road; WEST - Hillhead Road.

Milltimber roads tackled in the sequence, NORTH – A944; SOUTH - River Dee; EAST - Hillhead Road; WEST - Contlaw Road.

Pavements winter maintenance will utilise one Kubota path clearing machine which will be shared between Cults/Bieldside, Milltimber and Culter. Priority footways in Cults/Bieldside will be Abbotshall Road, Kirk Brae, North Deeside Road (South Avenue to Cults Hotel), Cults Avenue, Hillview Crescent, Quarry Road, Cairn Road, Baillieswells Road, North Deeside Road (at Bieldside Shops).

Priority footways in Milltimber will be Contlaw Brae & Monearn Gardens. The winter ‘call-out’ call centre number, which will be manned around the clock, is 03000-200292.

For fear of causing children, those in wheelchairs or pedestrians serious safety concerns by having to step into the road to negotiate over-grown hedges, can we please request that hedges which can affect public walkways are trimmed appropriately this year.

And finally, when you contact your Councillors with local issues it is our intention to reply to you quickly and then alert the relevant council officer and ensure a satisfactory follow-up. Please do be mindful that some legislation has the effect of tying our hands.

arly October and frost threatens. The hanging baskets have given a fine display throughout the warm summer but will be removed as their displays go over. The portable water carrier with battery powered pump was used to water the baskets and after some early problems proved to be successful although time consuming. More helpers will be required for this to be sustainable going forward.

The tubs and other planters are still displaying their blooms but a dry summer and influxes of weeds have marred the appearance of some planters. This again is an instance where more help would keep these looking better for longer.

We have another allocation of spring crocus and muscari bulbs from Aberdeen City Council to looked forward to. When these arrive, these smaller bulbs will be planted close to footfall where they may be appreciated most.

Finally, a reminder that all of the above does not happen without funding. CULTS BIELDSIDE AND MILLTIMBER COMMUNITY COUNCIL Lights don’t switch on by themselves!

D

uring 2018, your community council embarked on a Christmas Lights Project with the aim of introducing new festive lighting into our community. We reached out to prominent local businesses for sponsorship and were truly delighted to obtain sufficient sponsorship to fund our new festive lights. These feature lights are now seasonally mounted along the North Deeside Road in Cults, Bieldside and Milltimber. The lights certainly create a delightful illumination; a great starting point to our very own winter wonderland. CBM Community Council aims to erect festive lights all along the North Deeside Road in Cults, Bieldside and Milltimber.

So here we go again - get out your Santa hats, we are now ready for our 2019 festive light switch-on event! This will be held on Saturday, 23rd November at The Hub Café, Kirk Centre, 4pm to 6pm. To help the festivities along: there will be a visit from the Highland Alpacas; Aberdeen Chorus of Sweet Adelines will be performing for us again; Santa will be arriving in his TukTuk; lots of fun activities will be on offer, including face-painting, children’s games and most importantly we will have a number of local charities showcasing their great work.

We are also starting to plan ahead for the 2020 festive period. As previously stated, our objective is to erect festive lights along the entire North Deeside Road in Cults, Bieldside and Milltimber. We have no allocated budget for this project and although your local community council supports this project, we need to obtain continued support from within our local community to fund it. So, we are reaching out again to prominent local business and community stakeholders.

CBM Community Council would be grateful if you would become either our project’s principal sponsor or, alternatively, a sponsor of one or more festive lights (at a cost of £600 per light). Sponsor names will be displayed on a plaque located on each columnmounted feature and acknowledged in our community magazine, MBC News.

You will also be our guest at the switchon ceremony.

This is an excellent opportunity to support our drive to brighten up the heart of our community during the festive period, fostering good will, boosting the collective feel-good factor and potentially attracting more people into our local businesses. The community council is committed to working with local businesses and stakeholders to create the best possible festive display. Advocacy Volunteers help people speak up for themselves and make their views heard. Sometimes people need support expressing what they want to say and having their point of view taken seriously. Advocates are there to be on someone’s side. They can help people to access information, to understand their rights, to explore options and to express their views and wishes.

All of our client meetings/appointments usually take place on Monday – Friday, between 9:00-5:00pm. There is an expectation that volunteer advocacy workers will take on 1-2 clients. The frequencies of meetings vary from case to case and a client may have several meetings or appointments in the same week and then may not have any meetings or appointments for 3-4 weeks.

We provide an independent, confidential and free Advocacy Service.

A Smashing Time We are fortunate in Milltimber to have a small wood (currently used for general recreational purposes) between Contlaw Road and Culter House Road.

The wood is used by dog walkers with dogs exercised on and off lead; Milltimber Playgroup’s Wednesday and Friday Forest School; mountain bikers; horse riders transiting through the wood (as does the occasional walker); the permanent inhabitants – wild animals; and lastly – teenagers.

In the main, the teenagers and young adults who frequent the wood do so in the good weather as a break from home…to catch up with friends and be out-with adult supervision.

Unfortunately, a small minority, as with everything in life, are inconsiderate and unthoughtful; a recent trend being broken or discarded beer bottles.

On Monday 19th August, whilst dog walking in the wood, I found an abandoned camp site which had been used the previous weekend.

A hoodie was hanging on a tree. There were discarded instant barbecues; two camping chairs near a burnt out fire; discarded metal rods from either camping chairs or an old tent; cigarette packets and cigarette butts; empty alcohol

bottles; beer bottle tops and sadly at the base of two different trees, only 15 paces away from the campfire area, smashed beer bottles at each.

They were not broken, but deliberately smashed into hundreds of pieces.

An hour and a half was spent tidying up the area to make it safe for fellow users.

It should be noted that a piece of paper was also found containing a name and place of part-time employment.

The group has been identified – due to the ease with which some people publish their lives online - but not spoken to. There is no intention of public shaming, but parents should be aware of where their children are, and the teens should start learning early that actions have consequences.

It is not expected that people live the life of hermits, drink no alcohol, and are in bed by 10, but a little common sense and thought goes a long way. It’s a short life; enjoy it, and do no harm to others…

Girlguiding in Cults Girlguiding in Cults involves over 150 girls in Rainbows, Brownies and Guides, supported and run by a great team of volunteers. However, units are in danger of closing due to a lack of leaders which would not only impact on girls currently involved with the organisation, but those on our ever growing waiting lists.

We are looking to recruit adult volunteers to help us keep these units open, and maybe even open new ones in the future! So if you can help, please get in touch. Even if you cannot commit to being available on a weekly basis we would love to hear from you. Some of our Rainbows tried out their climbing skills, bike riding and marshmallow toasting at Adventure Aberdeen. The units have also had a visit from Bob’s Buddies who popped in with three owls to chat to the girls and, if they were keen, let them hold one.

They’ve held unicorn parties and visited Jump In to say goodbye to girls moving up to Brownies, as well as going on nature walks to look at different textures and hunt for leaves, flowers and bugs. Later in the year they are looking forward to a visit from the Guide Dogs for the Blind and a trip to the panto.

The three Brownie units came together for a giant sleepover at Jump In – the trampoline park all to themselves with a movie night included; the girls had an absolute ball although not much sleeping happened! They’ve also tried out scuba diving, paddleboarding, been to Blair Drummond Safari Park and had water fights.

One unit invited along some mums, dads and other locals to interview them about their jobs and earn their jobs badge. One Brownie even asked everyone how much money they earned but we’re not sure that anyone answered that one! We’ve also had a shot at using a fireman’s hose although the leaders would definitely agree that maybe aiming the hose could be improved! Before Christmas they are looking forward to a trip to Cocoa Ooze, a trip to the panto and Christmas parties.

what was in the feely boxes. It was great to see the girls so enthusiastic and enjoying being involved in such a great local event.

Girls in Guides, along with the Brownies and Rangers, are looking forward to the Ibiza Pool Party that the leaders have organised in the New Year.

Although we think that some of the leaders might be more excited about this than the girls are!

Not wanting the girls to have all the fun, some of our adult volunteers took part in the Girlguiding Aberdeen Ballroom Blast event. We’ve also been out for end of term drinks, attended a social event in Guide headquarters and been out for a meal together.

Our Guides have been away on camp at the Crathes campsite where they had a great time! They also attended the annual Girlguiding Scotland Tartan Gig at The Hydro in Glasgow, seeing artists such as The Vamps and Lewis Capaldi along with 9000 other Girlguiding members – possibly all with flashing bunny ears. The Guides and leaders who attended had a great time!

So as you can see we organise some really great activities but without new leaders coming forward we may not be able to continue. We are a great group to be involved with and a very sociable bunch outwith running our units so why not get in touch? (cultsdistrict@gmail.com )

A Visit from Nagasaki The bonds of friendship between Aberdeen and Japan have long been in the making, with connections like Thomas Blake Glover (the Scottish Samurai) being celebrated in Japan and only now, after a century, being recognised in Scotland. Ronnie Watt OBE, ORS has been one of the most robust links with our city and Japan since the days of Glover. This friendship was endorsed by the Japanese when they gave him ‘The Order of the Rising Sun’, an award previously bestowed on Glover,

making Ronnie the 2nd Scottish Samurai.

Ronnie Watt is a 9th Dan Karate Master who has taught Karate in Aberdeen and beyond for more than 50 years. Ronnie is also founder of the ‘Scottish Samurai Awards’ which are supported by his Karate, donations and the hard work of the awards committee.

In August this year, Ronnie organised holiday lodgings in Scottish family homes for a group of 15

Japanese school children who were visiting Aberdeen. The children stayed in Cults and Milltimber with many of Ronnie’s friends and karate-ka. Their teachers stayed at The Cults Hotel.

The children experienced a fantastic jam-packed weekend of Scottish culture and history, beginning with the Lord Provost welcoming the children and their families with a civic reception in the Aberdeen Town House. They went on to visit the city centre, Dunottar Castle, Stonehaven, Drum Castle and Crathes. On Saturday, 24th August, they spent the day at the Lonach Gathering. To experience a Lonach Gathering is something extraordinary,

especially if you are from Japan! The children and their families were accompanied by the Consul General of Japan, Lord Charles Bruce and Ronnie.

They were welcomed into the arena by the master of ceremonies, Robert Lovie, and introduced to the Lonach audience with the pipes resounding. On Sunday night, the tour ended with a private party hosted by Pauline Dreelan. Ronnie’s Aberdeen Karate pupils kicked off the fun with a demonstra-

tion of Karate. The Japanese visitors then joined in the ceilidh dancing, with Charlie Abel from Iron Broo Ceilidh Band providing the music on his accordion. The children loved the Scottish music and dancing, taking to it like ducks to water.

One parent of the host families commented on how much she enjoyed the company of the Japanese children during the stay: “They were so polite, and I will miss them. I was in tears when they left. It was very emotional. One of them was so fascinated by everything here, and they even took photos of what was in my fridge!”

It is not our differences that define us; it’s our humanity that unites us.

On Monday morning the groups met up for a tearful goodbye at Aberdeen Airport. This is the second such visit that Ronnie has organised for the Japanese in Aberdeen. The visits have become a pilgrimage recreating the historic trips of the Japanese students organised by Glover. The students who visited Scotland over a century ago on Glover’s behalf, went on to modernise Japan and transformed it into one of the world’s most important economies. Glover and his students are celebrated in Japan as the fathers of the new age of industry. Who knows what might come of these modern-day trips, a century on?

Deeside Local Food Festival

By the time you read this our summer season will have ended and our talented artists will be spending their time painting, drawing and preparing for next year’s exhibitions. Thank you to everyone who has supported us in some way this year, either by visiting our exhibition in Culter Heritage Tearooms or coming along to view our artwork in Blairs Chapel during NEOS this year. If you are a budding artist and would like to join us for the 2020 season, then please get in touch.

Through this magazine we have recently welcomed one new artist to our group but there is always room for new talent and ideas to add interest and give more variety for customers. Our 2020 exhibition in the Culter Heritage Tearooms will begin in April and run through to the end of October.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Deeside Local Food Festival at Cults Academy on Sunday 15th September. The sun even came out and so did about 3400 other visitors.

This was the 5th year of the festival. It aims to bring the local community together and to celebrate the wonderful variety of locally produced food and drink in our area. This year there were 74 food and drink businesses at the event and over 90% of them were from an AB postcode, so truly local.

To compliment the indoor and outdoor farmers’ markets we filled the playground with delicious street food stalls so there was plenty to choose from for lunch from Stonehaven landed crab and lobster platters by Seafood Bothy all the way through to Balvenie St whisky ice cream. Visitors could also drop in to the free cooking demonstrations at either the Marquee Stage or the Seafood Scotland Stage to find inspiration for their home cooking. Inside there were producer talks, gin blending workshops by Deeside Distillery and even children’s afternoon tea making workshops with Kids in the Kitchen Aberdeen, and all were thoroughly enjoyed.

How can you have a local food festival without highland dancers?

Well, we couldn’t! Sinclair School of Highland Dancing put on a beautiful display and was a real attraction. Chalmers Mackay Music School together with Cults Academy entertained us throughout the day in the Buskers Bothy and also in the playground. We enjoyed fiddlers, singers, a ceilidh band, pipers, a pianist, saxophonists and much more. The music and the dancing gave the event a real festival feel and was very much appreciated by everyone.

The Arts Society Grampian is the new name for the Grampian Decorative and Fine Arts Society (GDFAS). Although the name and logo have changed the programme of riveting and varied lectures with superb illustrations remains as exciting as ever.

25-Year Award presented to Albacappella Singer Peterculter singing group Albacappella is celebrating the 25-year career of one of its founding members, Faybianne Warner.

Faybianne, who set up the barbershop chorus along with her husband Mike, was surprised at a recent rehearsal when she was presented with her 25-year award by Jacqui Edwards, an official from the group’s national organisation.

Jacqui is the local liaison officer for the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS), and travelled to Aberdeen from the south of England to congratulate Faybianne.

Faybianne’s signing career extends beyond 25 years, as she first started singing in a chorus in 1981. She sang with several barbershop organisations on the English south coast, as well as setting up and singing in a number of quartets, winning a number of prestigious trophies and medals along the way. When Faybianne and Mike moved to Scotland in 2008, they both joined local barbershop choruses, as well as setting up “Albamix” a chorus of men and women.

Mike Warner also has a long and distinguished singing career. He sings with

Aberdeen’s Granite City Chorus, as well as being musical director for Albacappella and is a singing judge for national organisations. In 2012, the pair set up Albacappella, and Faybianne continued her quartet success singing with “Ms Behavin” for six years.

Albacappella has grown significantly over the last seven years and now has over thirty members. The chorus performs locally and at national competitions, having won several medals and trophies in recent years. Meeting every Wednesday at St Peter’s Heritage Hall, Peterculter, Albacappella sings traditional barbershop songs as well as Scottish ballads and up-to-date pop songs.

On receiving her award, Faybianne said: “It is a privilege to be given a 25 year pin from LABBS, and to receive it from Jacqui who herself has an impressive singing background.

LABBS is a growing and popular organisation and is the only purely British organisation for female barbershop singers in the UK. “Since its establishment in 1976, LABBS has grown to have 50 clubs and over 2300 members who are located across the country from Cornwall to Scotland. Singing with other people is wonderful. It is a great hobby, which has enabled me to meet some wonderful people and make a wide group of friends across the country.”

Albacappella chairperson, Linden Tapper, commented: “We are so proud of Faybianne.

As well as being a beautiful singer, with an impressive range, Faybianne and her husband Mike are fundamental to Albacappella, working tirelessly for our members every week.

We congratulate Faybianne on her award and look forward to the next 25 years in harmony.”

News from St Devenick’s Playgroup It’s been a great start to the academic year, welcoming back our existing children and getting to know the new children. Our playgroup is for children 2.5 to 5 years old. If you are looking for something for your child to do in the mornings, to give them experiences in socialising and learning to separate from you through outdoor and indoor play, then we might be what you are looking for.

Last term we had fun settling the children in after their long summer break. The staff spend time building relationships with the children and their families. It’s an important part of what we do, as we know it is a big step for a child to learn to separate from their mum, dad or carer. Getting to know the child is key, knowing their likes, dislikes, what they can do, what they need help with etc. We can then offer them opportunities catered for their own individual needs.

This year we have provided more natural resources such as sticks, cones, logs, conkers and much more. It is fascinating observing where the children’s imaginations take them. We have also been developing our Secret Garden. It’s already a great place to play but our plans will make it even better! We plan to put in a new mud kitchen area, a bigger sand pit, a rockery for small world play, a denbuilding and construction area and also a bug hotel! It is going to be fabulous and we know the children will get so many fun learning experiences from this. Thanks to all our lovely parents for all their hard work and help in the garden so far.

We will have our annual trip to visit Santa and also be rehearsing for our Christmas Concert at the end of term. As a charity community group, we rely on the help of parents and all help given is always massively appreciated. We have welcomed in a new Committee this session who have planned some wonderful events for the year ahead, one of which was our Celebration Ceilidh to celebrate 50 years of the playgroup being in our community. It was great to celebrate with staff and parents from over the years and to mark this special milestone for the playgroup.

The 2019 MBC Festival finished on Sat 7th September, having completed 20 events over 21 days. It’s an intense period for the event organisers, but so worth it when we see how happy the attendees are and hear how some of the events have generated new members or customers for local groups and businesses.

We are hugely grateful to everyone who got involved in this year’s Festival – both event providers and attendees. We held a small “Thank You” party for the event providers on 27th September and in chatting to these community-minded folk, received several suggestions for next time. We look forward to sharing some of these new ideas in the new year!

Things are pretty active at the moment with both competitive and development teams playing matches at the weekend and training throughout the week.

With the nights drawing in quickly, the coaches and club have been busy organising the winter training facilities, either indoor or under floodlights; not an easy task to find places that can accommodate so many teams eager to train.

We would like to say a huge thank you for your very kind donations.

As some of you may know the club has its own training pitch, the Culter Junior pitch, next to Crombie park and we are currently trying to develop the facility as much as we can. We have recently installed a changing room unit and added signage to make us easier to find. Unfortunately, we are having issues with ‘unwanted guests’ using our pitch while not part of our club.

This is leading to litter being left on the pitch, some vandalism and damage being caused. Most recently, our portable toilet was pushed over. Luckily it had just been emptied.

As the area around the pitch is a common dog walking area, the club would ask that if you see any foul play at our pitch, please let us know and we can try to put an end to things and keep the facility safe and clean for the young kids who need the use of the pitch to develop their talents.

Culter Youth Football Club Culter Youth Football Club was formed in 1983 with the primary purpose of providing football for boys and girls in the club’s surrounding areas.

We aim to provide development pathways that allow players to reach their potential while maintaining a community-based ethos. The club is a registered Scottish charity and has nearly 300 registered players who play in 11 different age groups through 16 active teams.

The club is split into two sections – Development age - Players (boys and girls), born between 2007 and 2013, play in noncompetitive matches and festivals in 4, 5, 7 and 9 a-side teams.

Competitive age – Players, born prior to and in 2006, play 11 a-side competitive matches in leagues and various cup competitions.

Unfortunately, we don’t currently have any dedicated girls’ teams but this is something we are keen to rectify and start up. If you are interested in starting a Girls Section, then please contact the club.

Cults Lawn Tennis Club What a fantastic summer season we have had at Cults Lawn Tennis Club. The regular season may be over, but our members are still out enjoying playing on our six fantastic all weather courts, and can continue to do so all winter. The Tennis Club has something going on for everyone to keep motivated from now until after Christmas with box league matches, social play afternoons and evenings, social events and coaching at all levels. We are also welcoming back our RGU students.

Our comprehensive coaching programme for adults and children, from complete beginner to experienced, continues throughout the year and there are many chances to get involved. If you are interested in improving your game, we have the right class for you. Many of our coaching sessions are open to non-members for a small fee, so please do not hesitate to get in touch with our head coach, Gareth Rennie, or secretary, Hilary Leigh, for more details.

Additionally, this year, members will have the opportunity to join in a Whisky Trail and Blind Tasting organised by Deeside Rotary to be held in our club house on Friday, 8 November. I’m pretty sure the ghost of Burns will be there to offer advice.

Cults Academy PTA News Castleton Farm strawberries and cream were so popular last year that we think the Sports Day strawberry stall is set to become a PTA fixture. Despite the poor weather this year, the PTA raised an impressive £400 at the stall. We kicked off the new school year with our first PTA meeting in August which was busy and entertaining. It was great to welcome some new faces and hear some creative ideas. We hosted a lovely social get-together with refreshments before the S1 Google Suite evening in September, which could become a regular add-on to that information evening.

Most of our members play indoor bowls throughout the winter---we started midSeptember. We play at Aberdeen Indoor Bowls based in Summerhill Road off the Langstracht. A busy building with 12 full-size rinks, often all rinks in play. This is a separate club with its own annual fee. It is common for members to play two or three times a week with some players being there every day of the week! A home from home. Additionally, Cults Bowling Club organises two or three Sunday games against other clubs. This year we have games against the Ex-Presidents and Seafield BC. These games are followed by a companionable meal.

Join us for the Expressive Arts show on Tuesday 19th November where the PTA will be serving refreshments to raise money to fund as many of this year’s resource requests from the school as possible. So far, the PTA have pledged to fund over £3,200 of exciting learning and extra-curricular projects in the 2019/20 school year, including new activities Gaelic Football and Floorball and the following:

If fund raising targets are reached we’ll also direct funds to the Grampian Children’s Book Award, transport for Activities Week and the cost of activities at Sports Day. The hugely successful Christmas Cracker raffle raised £2,000 last year so we will be running that again next term. Look out for your book of raffle tickets coming home in December and the luxury hampers and other prizes will be on display at the Christmas Concert on December 12th. The PTA will be serving festive drinks and fine pieces that evening and you can purchase extra raffle tickets then too.

If you or your business would like to donate a raffle prize this would be much appreciated. The PTA are also on the hunt for a sponsor for the Cults Academy Golf Team.

Cults Cricket Club: Come and Try Cricket Event!

Cults Cricket Club are delighted to have taken part in the recent MBC Festival at which we held a Come and Try Cricket Event in The Allan Park on Saturday 24th August. It was great to see local youngsters trying the game for the first time and, more importantly, having lots of fun.

Cricket is a game for all and although we do not have the capacity to run a junior section, we would encourage all young children to get into the game. Aberdeenshire Cricket Club runs excellent junior events and training and is where several current Cults players learned to play cricket. If interested, please email Bob Buchan, b.buchan31@sky.com

until the wins began to accumulate with Cults winning three out of four as we entered the midway point of the season. The weather continued to dampen proceedings in the second half of the season, but Cults did enough to get over the line and won their last two games convincingly to stave off any relegation fears.

M. Ali was the star with bat and ball as he finished being the top run scorer and wicket taker for the club. Syed, Mahajan and Khan were all regular contributors with the bat and the middle order was marshalled by Captain A. Ajazi. Wicketkeeper P. Watson had a fine season with the gloves, taking 11 catches, narrowly missing out on the league’s best figures.

With another season in the books, we would like to thank our hardworking committee members who help run the club. Planning is already underway for the 2020 season which will be the 127th in our history!

2019 Season Review

Cults recovered from a sluggish start to the 2019 season to maintain our status as a Grade 1 side for another year. Due to some early season poor form and rain calling off a handful of matches, it was not until June before Cults picked up their first win. After that, it was not long

We are gearing up to celebrate all things literary as we join libraries across the country to celebrate Book Week Scotland from the 18th to 24th November. Aberdeen City Libraries are hosting several events as part of the celebrations. We will be joined by SG Maclean, renowned author of ‘The Redemption of Alexander Seaton’, SJI Holliday, author of the Banktoun trilogy and Mason Cross, author of the Carter Blake series. We will also be holding two informal reading groups, giving you the chance to meet with fellow readers to share what you have been reading and give recommendations. Cults Playgroup News

W

ith the start of the new academic year in mid-August we welcomed many new children who began the process of separating from their parents/carers, as well as a few faces from last year, keen to settle into the playgroup routine and enjoy familiar activities.

Some warm weather has enabled us to make the most of our outdoor garden. The mud pit is always popular, used by digger and dumper trucks, turned into a mud kitchen or simply a space for digging and finding treasure which may be keys, old coins or coloured stones! With crates, tyres, wood blocks, wooden planks and beach stones, the possibilities for using imagination is endless. We also have baskets of ‘loose parts’ such as smaller painted stones, cones and shells which can challenge mathematical and counting skills and stimulate conversation. Alongside more traditional balls and stilts, we have climbing frames, a wooden rocker, and trikes. So, there is always plenty to keep the children busy.

Indoors, the art and craft table has been very popular each day, having a variety of ready-mixed paints and items to glue, in addition to scissors, crayons, felt pens and pencils. There has been a variety of printing done, using sponges, rollers and shapes. This year’s ‘Sainsbury’s’ Disney cards have proved good for sorting activities, cutting, sticking and discussion about favourite characters in films. Messy play with sand, water and playdough is also well liked and changes from week to week. The role play area has been the kitchen of a house, a babies creche, a hospital, and a workshop with tools, wood, hard hats and outfits. We have a wide variety of both fiction and nonfiction books, and the children love to listen to stories. So far this term ‘Peppa Pig’ and ‘Thomas The Tank’ are firm favourites.

Every day, the children enjoy a healthy snack with milk or water. This has included potatoes harvested from the church garden by the children, which they washed, and were then cooked and eaten with baked beans.

The playgroup committee are already busy. Upcoming fundraising events include the ever popular ‘Burns Supper’ on 25th January 2020. Everyone is welcome at our events, so do come along.

Cults Playgroup operates each morning of the week at the North Hall, Quarry Road from 9.00am until 12.10pm. We still have a few places available this academic year. September saw the first overseas trip organised by the club with eleven folk from the club trekking through and around the Wilder Kaiser Naturpark in Austria over four day. A variety of accommodation, from hotels to quite plush ‘mountain huts’ was arranged and enjoyed.

Although the weather did not do justice to the scenery, the walks through high alpine pastures, beneath steep limestone crags, did not disappoint.

Later in September, back in Scotland, club members walked the more familiar territory of the Firmouth and Mount Keen routes from Glen Esk to Glen Tanar.

Simeon News Another busy summer at Simeon comes to an end and we celebrated the changing of the seasons at a Harvest service and meal on Michaelmas day. It was wonderful to see family, friends, staff and residents come together for the special occasion. It was a timely reminder of the importance of community and togetherness when things around us and outwith our control are in turmoil.

At the end of August, the ‘Friends of Simeon’ organised a fundraising concert where we were treated to an evening of song and music by the talented pupils of Chalmers Mackay School of Music. We have also enjoyed other musical concerts, performers and even two Pygmy Goats came to visit our residents. No kidding!

Milltimber Scout Group News – Autumn 2019 The Milltimber Scout Group had a full programme of activities and community events after the Summer holidays. Beavers worked on their Emergency Aid badge and had a visit from a dentist to teach them about teeth care. They also earned Hikes Away badges on an evening hike to Crathes Castle in September, enjoying hot dogs afterwards!

Cubs worked on International Activity and Emergency Aid badges and some of the older ones taught practical skills to the younger ones. Others took part in a day of challenge activities at Templars’ Park, also known as ‘I’m a Cub Scout Get Me Out of Here!’ in September, teaming up with Cubs from Hilton for activities. The Cubs are also looking forward to the 5-a-Side Football Tournament in November.

Scouts enjoyed their Summer Camp at Grampian Nights, with Adventure, Skills and ‘Splash’ water sports activities and also helped run a Family Fun Afternoon at Allan Park as part of the MBC Festival in August. A group of four Scouts completed their Expedition Challenge 2-day hike and overnight camp in the Braemar area in August and enjoyed the experience, despite the midges! The Scouts are looking forward to the ‘Mission Impossible’ night games and camp in early December. We are also preparing for a trip to a Scout centre in Belgium in May 2020 and will be running a number of fund raising events over the coming months.

Finally, members of our Group will be joining other youth groups for the Remembrance Day Parade and Service at Peterculter Parish Church on Sunday 10th November.

Milltimber Playgroup News In August, we welcomed back many returning families as well as greeting some new faces and an exciting term lies ahead. Everyone has settled quickly and we have already enjoyed lots of fun activities. We are very fortunate to enjoy the benefit from such a vast outdoor area surrounding the Milltimber Community Association (MCA) hall and we have been keen to maximise our time outside whilst the weather has permitted.

While being outside over the last few weeks, the children have observed the seasonal changes as we move from summer to autumn.

We have been keen to point out the change in the colour of the leaves, as well as the drop in temperature and the morning dew which has started to appear. We have been educating the children about farming and how the different seasons affect what crops are grown in the fields. To develop the children’s curiosity and understanding they have been making bird feeders and scarecrows. In addition to this, we also appreciated a visit from Childsmile who spent some time educating the children about the importance of oral health and the need to brush their teeth.

Many of the children also attend the Wednesday and Friday Forest School sessions. This is a great opportunity for them to experience outside learning in a nature based context.

They are also enjoying seeing all the changes that are occurring from week to week in their environment. So far this term they have been exploring the woods and have been very busy making conkers and stick men. They have also enjoyed making flying dragons and dinosaurs.

Our playgroup relies heavily on fundraising, and so in August we went straight into fundraising mode by running a tea room at the MBC Art Festival at Newton Dee. We would like to say a huge thank you to all those families who generously contributed to the home bakes.

Also, a thank you to the local community for their support in visiting the tearoom, and also to the Arts Festival for having us.

School Nursery’s afternoon session, providing seamless child care from 9:15am until 3:35pm, Monday to Friday. We also offer the wraparound transport service from Milltimber School morning nursery and lunch club for our Friday afternoon Forest School session, which means child care from 8:30am to 2:40pm.

Rotary Club of Aberdeen Deeside Partners’ Night, 31st July 2019 Members and partners met at the Green where our guided tour of Nuart started.

Nuart started, in Aberdeen, in 2017 and has been added to over the last few years.

This year’s festival opened in April but the artwork from this and previous years is available to see at any time. We had a guide which made all the difference as small works which could easily have been missed were pointed out.

After the tour we moved to Poldino’s for an excellent meal to end the evening out.

The statues around Aberdeen of Oor Wullie’s Big Bucket Trail, were recently sold and the one sponsored by RCAD, along with the 16 other local Rotary Clubs, was auctioned for £6,300. The overall total raised by the sale of the statues that were displayed around Aberdeen was some £300,000.

As this goes to press a number of events, below, are in hand and will be reported on in more detail in the next issue.

Milltimber PTA

Rhyme books for Nursery to support their focus on rhyme.

We have great pride in the work of our Parent Teacher Association at Milltimber School and Nursery. They are a band of enthusiastic and busy volunteers who help stage events throughout the year to raise funds for the school to benefit our children’s learning.

Outdoor learning resources, including sports equipment, games and playground equipment.

This year has been particularly successful, with a range of fun-filled, popular activities and events providing much-needed resources for the school.

We have taken a leap forward with our support for learning, with new dedicated resources and areas to help our children. One of our very experienced teachers is now dedicated to providing support for learning to pupils from all classes for two days every week in a new room.

Thanks to PTA funding, we have been able to purchase a wide range of resources to support all children with their learning, both online and hands-on. All resources purchased are easily accessible to all children in our new Boost Bases, available for every child in each of our three stage areas.

New resources include: New books for Nursery and Early Years. We identified a gap in our libraries and have purchased books covering values, diversity and multi-cultural themes.

Renewing essential teaching subscriptions and resources.

Topic resources, for example an incubator and hatching chicks which proved hugely popular as part of ‘Our Living World’ theme.

Merit and sports day stickers, house badges for sports day, additional craft and science funds, and PE resources, including transportation costs to events.

Wooden storage sheds for the Early Years’ garden.

Coding devices and the latest digital technology resources.

Ensuring fun events organised by our creative and dedicated staff can continue to be funded and supported, for example the Bunny Bonanza and Elf Breakfast held at Easter and Christmas respectively were both hugely popular.

The school is hugely grateful for the efforts of the PTA as, without those funds, none of this would be possible.

We are also delighted to have introduced a dedicated chill-out room, providing a quiet and

calm space for anyone requiring time out. The room has been designed by a dedicated staff member, funded by the PTA and offers a range of relaxing resources in a sensory environment.

The PTA’s Christmas Market will be held in the school hall on the evening of Friday, 15th November. Come along, browse and buy some early pressies from a selection of stalls and merchandise, while enjoying some pre-Christmas entertainment, Xmas pies and more.

We are also pleased to be teaming up with Cults Primary School again this year to take part in the fund-raising family Santa Run on Saturday, 30th November.

And finally, plans for our new school have nudged forward ever so slightly since our last MBC News update. The city council’s Education Operational Delivery Committee met and agreed to relocate the existing Milltimber Primary School to a new building on an identified site within the Oldfold Farm development with effect from August 2021, or as soon as possible thereafter, subject to approval of the fully costed business case at City Growth and Resources Committee.

Peterculter Medical Practice

ur ‘flu vaccine campaign at the practice starts in early October; we will be running our usual regular immunisation clinics. The annual ‘flu vaccine protects people over 65, those of any age who have certain health conditions, pregnant women and those who work in healthcare against the strains of ‘flu virus that are likely to be circulating each winter ‘flu season. It is offered to all children in Scotland aged 2–5 years (and not yet in school) at their GP practice; it is also offered to all primary school children at school. As was the case last year, there are different vaccine products being used in the adult and at-risk groups; the recommended vaccine for any individual being based on scientific evidence of best possible effectiveness. Please remember that fit and healthy younger adults are not regarded as being at particular risk of ‘flu complications so are not recommended for routine NHS vaccination. Some companies will, however, offer this to their employees and the ‘flu vaccine is available on a private basis for a small charge via some pharmacies and other private medical organisations. Please don’t delay getting your ‘flu vaccine organised so that you are protected from influenza during the winter months – it’s not too late! Further information is widely available online; a good resource being www.nhsinform.scot/flu.

For the past few months, we have been hosting Elaine Forbes, paramedic practitioner, on a training attachment designed to give her experience of all aspects of health care delivery in a community setting. With the current recruitment challenges being faced by Primary Care, the clinical workforce is changing to be more diverse with pharmacists and advanced nurse practitioners already wellestablished members of the frontline team. Paramedic practitioners are also becoming a common addition to practice clinical staff, with their particular expertise in unscheduled/emergency work.

Thank you for your ongoing help with our medical student attachments. The practice is now fully involved at all stages of undergraduate medical education, from early years up to final year.

We are very lucky to have active Rainbow, Brownie and Guide Units in the Milltimber and Cults area. This is due to the hard work and dedication of all the Leaders. Previously as an Organisation we could give you a list of all the Units in the area, the name and contact details of the Leaders and as an interested parent you could contact the Leaders directly, but now due to our Nationwide “Safe from Harm” Policy we can no longer publish this information. We now have a Website that you can visit and register an interest for the age group you want a place in for your daughter. It is a simple procedure and once you have registered, a Guider should be in touch within 3 weeks to say if there are places available or if your daughter will be placed on the waiting list. You will be asked to put in your Postcode, the type of Unit you are interested in and if there are more than 1 suitable Unit you will be asked to put your 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice.
