Editorial And the saga continues... The circus that is Brexit is still refusing to leave town and is impossible to ignore! The new EU parliament opened with opposing sides of our clownish MEPs protesting with slightly rude T-shirts and very rude back turning. In the UK, the back and forth continues but the main performers have changed. The two who are vying to be the lead act endlessly perform their juggling skills and linguistic gymnastics to demonstrate their Brexit plan… A new deal by 31 October? The EU says there won’t be one. A No Deal? Amid warnings of economic disaster, Parliament has said this will be blocked. And once more we hit the same impasse… It’s slightly disconcerting to watch a competition for votes played out in front of us where the vast majority of us cannot vote. At least at the circus, we can clap in appreciation and if we laugh at the clowns, it is heard. Let’s hope whoever, by now, has given the most convincing performance can successfully move the circus on without major disruption (or any for that matter) and allow the space this country needs to progressively rebuild and reunite. With that out of the way (if only), this is a very big issue of MBC News! I must say “thank you again” to all who contribute and help make it so informative and entertaining. From epic mountain runs to the success of local businesses, there is much to celebrate in the area. The MBC Festival team have produced a fantastic programme of events for all to enjoy and you can find and pull out the superb guide in the centre pages of this issue. Finally, I hope you all have a lovely summer, whether you are holidaying at home or away, and please remember that the speed limit on North Deeside Road has been reduced to 30mph. The change came into effect in late June and covers the entire length. Signage is discreet so keep your speed in mind. Carol

MBC News Delivery It is always pleasing to get a call or an email asking how someone can help with the delivery of the MBC News and I had a couple earlier this year. The area where I would like to get some additional volunteers is from the growing community at Countesswells where we have over 200 new homes occupied. The MBC News is published 4 times a year and if you are able to give up an hour of your time once a quarter and help with delivery I would be happy to hear from you; so if you would like to help us keep the community informed please contact Peter Roberts, email: roberts.peter53@gmail.com or Tel. 01224 868524 http://cbmcommunity.org.uk/mbc-news/

CULTS BIELDSIDE AND MILLTIMBER COMMUNITY COUNCIL News from the Cults Bieldside and Milltimber Community Council Two more residents have volunteered to join the Community Council. A very warm welcome to Del Ellbec and Tania Qadir who were co-opted in April and May to complete the team. As part of our continuing effort to improve safety on the Old Deeside Line, the Community Council organized a safety event on the path in May. The event was supported by the City Ranger Service, the Police, Nestrans, the Grampian Cycle Partnership, Culter CC and the British Horse Society. During the event, which ran from 1100 till 1500, users of the path were given flyers promoting safe behaviour and tolerance towards other users and were asked to participate in a brief survey. Free cycle bells – donated by Nestrans – were also fitted. Some 100 to 120 users passed the event location and 75 agreed to participate in the survey. It was found that one in four of the regular users feel, at least sometimes, unsafe on the path. This is cause for continued concern and a strong reason for me to repeat my message from last month: Please accept that usage of the Line has increased dramatically over the past decade. Whether you like that development or not, only a sensible and tolerant approach will keep you and others out of harm. Sensible in allowing space and safe passage for other users and tolerant in accepting that not everybody is as sensible as you are. A full report will be shown on the CBMCC website. Speaking about the website, when you read this our webmaster will hopefully have migrated the CBMCC domain to a new provider. This is expected to improve access to larger documents, such as the report mentioned above, and improve the management of email. The availability and location of defibrillators in the CC area has been a subject of occasional discussion in our meetings for the last five years! The main difficulty being that not all of this equipment has been formally registered while a national, overall register is still under development. The Scottish Ambulance Service holds a database of registered defibrillators and hence the first step in any situation involving cardiac arrest is to call 999. Depending on circumstances, and if a defibrillator shows on the register as being close-by, they may ask for a bystander to go and retrieve it. In spite of this reassuring advice, CBMCC is still keen to spread information on the location of any (registered or unregistered) defibrillators in the area among residents and will continue to collect data with the aim to publicise it widely. A current list is shown in this issue and any additions are very welcome. The Community Plan of CBMCC has been available for some time now, and we are working hard to complete all actions identified in that plan. This should not be the end of the story though. The plan has been created as a live document i.e. new ideas and actions should be generated while current actions are being completed. Please have a look at the plan on our website and let us have your (reasonable) suggestions to further improve of the quality of life in the area. My final subject for this MBC News concerns Christmas. Yes, I have been assured it is coming again and here is a date for your diary. The Xmas Lights Switch-On event will probably be on 16 November this year. Enjoy the rest of the summer! Guus Glass

CULTS BIELDSIDE AND MILLTIMBER COMMUNITY COUNCIL Planning Matters! Aberdeen City Local Development Plan 2022 We submitted our response to the Main Issues Report (MIR) for the Aberdeen Local Development Plan (ALDP) 2022 by the due date. It was a large package with the covering letter alone using eight pages! On top of that we provided eighteen separate responses on the individual development proposals submitted for our area, a reflection of the pressure to build here. Putting this together was a team effort and my thanks go to all my colleagues who contributed to this magnum opus. When we compared notes with our Culter Community Council colleagues we were pleased to find that both councils have come to much the same conclusions about proposals around our common boundary. The planners are now busy assessing all the responses they have received and will report to Aberdeen City Council later this year before publishing the Proposed Local Development Plan early in 2020. If you want to keep up with progress and read the various responses to the MIR you can do so at: https://tinyurl.com/ y4xseoor We are now back to our regular reviews of planning applications and we have seen 32 new applications for Lower Deeside in the past quarter. Most continue to come from homeowners wishing to extend their existing properties but there have been some significant new ones.

Major Developments in Our Area: Binghill House- A Proposal of Application Notice has been submitted to convert and extend Binghill House as a care home and to build up to 140 new retirement homes (houses

and bungalows) with the objective of creating a retirement community in Milltimber. The development might also include a small local shop, community facilities and allotments. A public exhibition was held in Milltimber on 20th June and the proposer is seeking public views (which should be sent to Halliday Fraser Munro at 8 Victoria Street Aberdeen AB10 1XB or planning@hfm.co.uk). The more views expressed the better! The development would involve using farmland to the East of Binghill House which is currently zoned as Green Space Network and was graded as “unsuitable” for inclusion in ALDP2022, and the planners have already pointed out that the proposal “would appear not to comply with the terms of the development plan”. CBM Community Council strongly supports the provision of more retirement-friendly housing in our area but has reservations about this scheme at its present level of development. Contlaw Road – Stewart Milne Group (SM) hopes that their proposal for 30 homes, of which eight would be affordable, will come before the Planning Committee in August. A small number of neighbour objections were made, making good points about local infrastructure and education and health capacity which reflected similar concerns expressed by the community council. We have given conditional support to the scheme but were concerned that the calculation of developer contributions to community facilities (done to a strict methodology) seemed to underestimate the likely additional strain on the primary and secondary schools, and that Contlaw Road would need upgrading to cope with additional car traffic. Finally, we thought a commitment by the developer was required to ensure that the proposed Community Woodland Trust was adequately funded for the long term. Countesswells – The construction of Phase 1 development, around 1260 homes, continues.

All four developers are working on the site – Stewart Milne Group, Kirkwood Homes, Barratts and CHAP, and Hillcrest Housing Association will be taking some of the properties. Work continues on the West access road which will link to Kingswells roundabout and replace the existing C128c and is expected to be complete around end-2019. Discussions continue with the NHS about the provision of a temporary health facility. The site for the first primary school is ready for construction, and ACC has committed to a summer 2021 completion with a capacity of 400 pupils. No firm offers have yet been received to lease the first retail unit but Countesswells Development Ltd (CDL) still hopes for occupation by this summer. The proposed Stagecoach Route 44 shuttle service to Kingswells Park and Ride started in mid-June. It provides a 30-minute frequency between about 7am and 7pm Monday to Saturday and according to the timetable it connects in both directions with the X17 service between Aberdeen and Elrick. Longer-term viability and development of a direct bus service from Countesswells to the City will of course depend upon uptake of this service – “Use It or Lose It!”. Culter House Road – The planning application has now been approved for the development of 11 detached homes on the open land on the right as you turn the sharp bend near East Lodge. Friarsfield – CALA has purchased the Stewart Milne land at the West end of the development and a new planning application for this is awaited. Meanwhile work continues across the site. The construction of the new link road continues. Inchgarth Road Development – A planning application for this site is in development and the proposer hopes to submit it “in the next few months”.

CULTS BIELDSIDE AND MILLTIMBER COMMUNITY COUNCIL Land behind Bieldside House and Bieldside Lodge – Our primary concern with this is maintaining the integrity of the Deeside Way and the safety of its users, so we complained strongly to ACC after access to the Deeside Way was granted in May to allow drilling for soil investigations at this site. This involved a drilling rig and a teleloader using the Deeside Way between the site and Golf Road causing disruption to Deeside Way users and local traffic. A new planning application has now been made to the City Council including a Construction Method Statement which is intended to demonstrate that the proposed new house can be built without threatening damage to the heritage elements of Bieldside House. After the events of May the community council has little confidence that the work can be done without significant impact on the Deeside Way and local roads and we are framing our response accordingly. Milltimber South –We understand that Bancon Homes, the two landowners involved and ACC planners are in discussions. Bancon hopes to bring forward a “landscape-led proposal” and expects to carry out further consultation with the local community in the next few months.

Oldfold Farm – The planning application for the new Milltimber Primary School has been approved following public consultation. We have no further news of any progress with the proposed mixed-use community facilities. CALA is currently required to have these in place before 264 houses have been completed and is seeking to postpone this to 400. We would hope to see some compensatory arrangements put in place perhaps to advance improvements to community facilities elsewhere in Milltimber. We continue to be very interested to hear from Milltimber residents to gauge what the level of support for a local store or other facility such as a coffee shop or garden centre would be. AWPR Readers will not be surprised that a recent report on junction performance suggests that the A944 Kingswells South junction at peak times is the biggest problem as traffic patterns have evolved over the years with the growth of Westhill since the road was designed. It is likely that this junction will have traffic lights installed as part of preparations for the new Dons stadium which will hopefully mitigate the current problems.

Road Works You can keep up to date on road works in our area through our Community Council Facebook page at www.facebook.com/cbmcomcouncil/ and also on our website at www.cbmcommunity.org. uk. You can also find road work updates at www. tellmescotland.gov.uk/notices/aberdeen-city and through www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/transport_ streets/roads_pavements/roads_and_pavements. asp New A93 Speed Limit Finally, a reminder that the A93 now has a continuous 30mph limit from the City Centre out to the city limits at Culter. The signage changes for this mostly involved the removal of 30 and 40mph limit signs along the road and their replacement with modestly-sized red warning signs which we are assured are of the correct size and format. The exits from side turnings have the correct limit signs. However, for regular users of the road, old habits may have died hard so please watch your speed! City Centre Masterplan – Update June 2019 Roads Hierarchy Report A summary of the study done into the Roads Hierarchy in Aberdeen City has been issued. A full set of documents can be found in the report of the City Growth and Resources Committee meeting held on 6 June 2019, Item 11, https:// committees.aberdeencity.gov.uk/ieListDocuments. aspx?CId=618&MId=6703.

forward. Active travel is strongly encouraged – walking and cycling – as is the use of public transport. Representatives of the City Centre Masterplan reference Group reminded officers that they need to remember that a significant portion of the area’s population is not able to cycle or walk long distances, particularly in inclement weather, so better public transport and some provision for private vehicles entering and leaving the city is required.

The report considers the existing road network (all A, B and C-class roads as well as some unclassified roads) within the AWPR boundary and develops options for a revised classification comprising priority, secondary and local routes. With the AWPR acting as the priority orbital route, options are identified for revised priority and secondary radials, secondary orbitals and local roads, considering the alignment of routes and their role in a future hierarchy.

Car Park Strategy Consultants Report

- Change is needed to car parking as part of a package of travel demand management measures to support and deliver policy and strategy objectives for the city including the CCMP and roads hierarchy.

centre are considerably cheaper than benchmarked cities.

Following option appraisal and sifting, a recommended revised hierarchy of priority and secondary routes is introduced. All other streets in the city become local routes reflecting their status as local access roads and, in some cases, their predominant role as places for people – often these are residential or shopping streets where high volumes of traffic are undesirable. There is a lot of information to absorb in the papers. The overall direction of the work seems sound but as always, the issues will arise once the details are put

- Current car parking policy and guidance does not align with wider strategy objectives and, in comparison to benchmarked cities (Glasgow, Dundee, Newcastle), parking standards in Aberdeen for new developments are very generous.

- Based on existing demands there is sufficient off-street parking in appropriate locations, however management could be improved by directing drivers to under-utilised spaces.

A review of car parking in Aberdeen was done in conjunction with the roads hierarchy study and it made the following key findings:

- Parking tariffs for short stay parking in Aberdeen are cheaper than benchmarked cities. Charges for park and ride are more expensive, i.e. the cost of the bus into/out of the city. - Permits for on-street parking in Aberdeen city

- Considering the combined capacity and demand for ACC and private off-street parking, existing car parks are operating within effective capacity.

- It is therefore clear that many aspects of current on and off-street parking within the city need to change if plans for the city centre are to be successfully realised. An Executive Summary of the SCPR Issues and Opportunities Report is included as Appendix

C in the papers for the Growth and Resources Committee meeting 6 June, Item 11. A number of recommendations are made, Appendix D, and these will need further consideration. The analysis shows that council-owned car parks are operating within desired levels, apart from Summer Street which has a high use. Some of the privately-owned car parks e.g. Union Square, Trinity Centre, Bon Accord Centre, run at or near capacity at weekends. It was asked what will happen when the 326 spaces in the Denburn car park are no longer available when the site is redeveloped. Response was that the redevelopment is likely to include new parking provision so there should only be a limited period where spaces are less. The comment was made that just because Glasgow charges more for parking, Aberdeen does not need to follow suit. Park and ride costs need to be reduced if greater use of the service is to be encouraged. Cross City Connection Report This study is focussed on considering transport connections between new areas of development (both housing and employment) on the periphery of Aberdeen, and in areas of Aberdeenshire close to the Aberdeen City boundary, with the aim of providing viable, attractive and direct linkages, as an alternative to the private car. The headline recommendations are that the Public Transport options C1, C2 and E1 and all the Active Travel options identified in the STAG Part 2 report (and listed in Appendix 1), under item 10 of the

City Growth and Resources Committee meeting held on 6 June 2019, for Aberdeen Cross City Connections are approved for further development work subject to future funding being identified to progress these proposals. Other options considered are viewed as not commercially viable. Option C1 – Dyce P&R – Newhills – Kingswells P&R – Countesswells (with a potential extension from Countesswells to Chapelton of Elsick via Loirston) Option C2 – Dyce P&R – Kingswells P&R – Countesswells (with a potential extension from Countesswells to Chapelton of Elsick via Loirston) Option E1 – Murcar – Dubford – Grandhome – Stoneywood – Dyce P&R – Dyce Rail Station – Newhills – Kingswells P&R – Countesswells – Friarsfield – City Centre – Murcar Location of Art Pieces at Marischal Square The four sculptures commissioned from students at the North East Scotland College in 2018 are to be placed in locations around the Muse development at Marischal Square. Two will be in the reception areas of the two office buildings and two will be in the gardens in the quadrangle near Provost Skene’s house. Union Terrace Gardens The contractor for the work has been confirmed as Balfour Beattie and work will begin shortly with a completion date of summer 2021. The initial phase of work will focus on the safety railings on Union

Street bridge – the ‘Kelly Cats’ will be retained. Queen Street Redevelopment A presentation on the plans for the Queen Street redevelopment will be given to the Civic Forum and the Community Council Forum in the coming weeks. Union Street Conservation Area There have been over 70 enquiries about funding for the grants and 16 submissions have been made. The owner of the church in Marischal Square (G1) has planning permission for a bar and restaurant and work will begin on cleaning the outside of the building in August. Peter Roberts

News from Councillors Disappointingly we have had a very wet summer so far with little opportunity to get the barbecue out; however, always optimistic, there may still be a chance of an Indian summer! At the 16th May Operational Delivery Committee, parking restrictions on Westerton Road were on the agenda. Traffic surveys carried out before and after the opening of the AWPR still showed a significant volume of vehicles using the road. The recommendation to the committee was to have double yellow no waiting restrictions along the full length of Westerton Road to Inchgarth Road. As your local councillors with knowledge of the area and having spoken to residents in the immediate area, we argued that the parked cars on the north side of the Deeside Way bridge acted as effective traffic calming and that no waiting restrictions would potentially increase the speed of vehicles on Westerton Road and increase the local hazards. The current traffic arrangement ensures that all using Westerton Road as a route to the Bridge of Dee do so with respect for other road users, and safety for all users is maintained. The argument was accepted, and no waiting parking restrictions will be installed only from the south side of the bridge to Inchgarth Road. We continue to work with the Police and the Community Council to try to address complaints of speeding on our local roads. Following some work carried out by the Local Policing Team we were provided with the results which we thought might be of interest. Below identifies the time spent by the Police in different parts of the community (chosen due to complaints received re speeding traffic), how many people were stopped and the action the Police took. ¾¾ A93, along its length within CBMCC area – 70 minutes, 5 educations ¾¾ Baillieswells Road - 90 minutes, 7 educations ¾¾ Gowanbrae Road - 30 minutes, 0 educations ¾¾ Countesswells to Kingswells - 40 minutes 3 educations ¾¾ Kirk Brae - 50 minutes, 4 educations ¾¾ Craigton Road - 90 minutes 3 educations ¾¾ Friarsfield Road - 40 minutes, 3 educations ¾¾ Contlaw Brae - 30 minutes 1 education ¾¾ Binghill Road, Meadows, Binghill Road West & North. – 40 minutes, 0 educations Concern over the use of the Deeside Way regularly features either in our emails or raised by the Community Council. For a number of years, we have been working on protecting and enhancing the Deeside Way for users of all ages and abilities with colleagues from Sustrans, the Police, the Community Councils and other user groups. Concerns have been raised over motorbikes on the Deeside Way, the re-routing of the users when the Deeside Way was stopped up at Milltimber due to the AWPR and concern that possible future developments in the immediate vicinity of the Deeside Way could potentially make use of this important local amenity to enable access to motorised vehicles to facilitate those developments. At the meeting of Full Council on 24th June, a motion was unanimously agreed to call for a report to be brought back to the City Growth & Resources Committee which investigated all aspects of future access onto the Deeside Way. The report is expected in September. Your Councillors will keep you updated. We have been contacted again by several residents, including dog owners, complaining about people not picking up their dogs’ poo. Certain complaints related to children inadvertently treading in the uncollected poo and taking it into their homes. Another was about the bags of poo being dumped over people’s walls, under garden shrubs or left sitting on walls. We remind dog walkers that they are required by law to pick up their dogs’ poo and deposit in a suitable bin. The issue of dog poo not being picked up is not just deeply unpleasant, but it can have serious health implications and, whilst rare, contact with dog poo can cause toxocariasis, a nasty infection that can lead to dizziness, nausea and even blindness or seizures. We acknowledge that most of our dog owners are very responsible but there are still some not complying with the law. Page 10

Many rumours are circulating regarding the brown bin charge, recently agreed at this year’s March Council budget. The choices facing Councillors were: cut the garden waste collection completely as it isn’t statutory that we collect it; further increase everyone’s Council Tax; cut another service; or introduce the £30 charge. The first option would mean people without transport would struggle to go to a recycling centre and we felt that most people would find that option unacceptable. The second option meant that people wouldn’t have the choice to opt in or out of the charge; re the third option, there weren’t any desirable cuts we could make. We chose the last option which allows people choice and keeps the garden waste collection available. Some Councils such as Aberdeenshire don’t collect garden waste, other Councils charge to collect it. We didn’t take the decision lightly but as we continue to face challenging budgets, we are going to have to continue to make challenging decisions. The £30 charge is the annual cost per household; if you register and pay the £30 charge, the Council will continue to collect your garden waste. People will have the choice whether they wish to register for the service or can choose not to have their garden waste collected, so will not have to pay the £30 per year charge. Households will receive information and notice of the changes via a leaflet drop advising full details of cost and implementation date and hopefully by the time you are reading this article you will have already received the information. Even after the brown bin charge is implemented food waste will still be collected. Unfortunately, we have seen damage to some of the play equipment at Allan Park, not for the first time. We ask that the equipment is respected not only because it is expensive to repair and could end up being removed but also because other users could be injured on the broken parts before the Council has had the chance to find out about it. Another concern is the amount of rubbish and broken glass that has been left in and around Allan Park. Please ensure you either put the rubbish in a bin or take it home with you. The broken glass in particular is a real hazard to children, domestic animals and wild animals. Please don’t break glass or leave it lying. When leaving the park or down by the river, particularly later in the evening please consider residents who live nearby and keep the noise down. A final point, to remind the local youth to be careful if they are down by the river; whilst the water can seem inviting, the currents and depth of water can be unpredictable, and care needs to be taken. We are delighted to make you aware that a play area within our ward has been earmarked for refurbishment this financial year. Most of the play equipment from Kirk Terrace play area will be removed in the coming months, with the exception of the swing frame and spinner bowl, before being replaced with new items later into the financial year. The design options will be taken into to the local primary school so that the children most likely to use the new play area can have the opportunity to let us know what they think and to vote for their favourite option. We hope the remainder of the summer will be warmer and that the annual MBC Festival will bring out the sun. At the City Growth & Resources Committee on the 24th April, approval was given for the Roads and Transport Related Budget Programme 2019-2020, with an additional £2.5m allocated for road and pavements repairs. In the Appendix below we have identified the schemes in Lower Deeside that were approved, including those on the reserve lists. details below if you are looking for early years provision for your child. Funding available too! The work of the Committee was also acknowledged at the concert. Big thanks were given to Rhydian Griffiths, Janis McVean and all parents, grandparents and carers that gave so much time and support to the playgroup this year. The playgroup couldn’t run without it so huge thanks. I write, at the end of a very busy summer term. Reflecting on the year, I think of all the children and how they have grown. From taking those first few brave steps into the unfamiliar playgroup to becoming confident, enthusiastic little learners ready to take on the world! There has been so much fun – most of it with a lot of water and mud! On the last day, which is always so emotional, we had our end of term concert and graduation. The children sang their hearts out to their parents. At the end they were all given a trophy and a certificate to celebrate all their playgroup achievements. We look forward to seeing all those who are staying with us after the holidays and also welcoming all the new children after the summer for another play-filled year of fun and mud! We still have some places available for 2 ½ to 5 year olds so please do contact us on the

The term ahead is always one of our favourites. We take great pleasure in settling all the new children into the playgroup. We follow their interests with a balance of outdoor and indoor play. Our secret garden is a place where the children can really explore – and with our plans to add a few extra things to the garden – the new mud kitchen, small world rockery, enlarged sandpit, den building and constructing area, tyre climbing corner . . . there will be even more imaginative and creative places to take their learning.

A Special Event . . .

News from Rising Fives Our Rising Fives group runs from September through to July for any child in their pre-school year. Our Rising Fives team plan a whole host of activities the children really look forward to doing – arty crafts, food crafts, science experiments, outdoor fun and lots more to entertain the children while they play with their friends. Milltimber Community Defibrillator A new community defibrillator has been installed outside Deeside Christian Fellowship Church in Milltimber. This wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of time and effort from the following: Jill Sandilands of Milltimber Community Association who organised a JustGiving page for donations from the local community; Marjory Adam, who kindly donated funds in memory of her husband, John Adam; Morven Noble of DCFC who dealt with all the administration associated with the purchase & installation; and Gordan Main of CAS Duncan who installed the defibrillator, free of charge. The defibrillator is registered with the Scottish Ambulance service, so in the case of cardiac arrest, the ambulance call takers will direct Milltimber callers and provide a code to this defibrillator. This will help increase the chance of survival of the person who is having a cardiac arrest.

Food Caddy Liners

Don’t be an Idler Switch off your engine for cleaner air in Cults Bieldside and Milltimber.

Online ordering of food caddy liners will cease on the 31st May 2019. From the 1st June free liners will only be available from distribution points throughout the city. There are currently 37 distribution points across the city. A map of sites is available on the council’s website. Additional distribution points, listed below, have been identified and will shortly be added to the map. The recycling team is working on increasing the number of distribution points further to improve accessibility and availability to the householder. The team would welcome any suggestions you may have for new outlets. It is recognised that some residents may have difficulty accessing a distribution point and we have collaborated with the Home Library Service to continue deliver to these residents. For more information please visit: https://www.aberdeencity. gov.uk/services/libraries-and-archives/libraryservices/home-library-service Residents can contact the Waste and Recycling Team by logging an enquiry at: https://www.aberdeencity. gov.uk/services/bins-and-recycling/waste-generalenquiries for advice and assistance. Addition distribution points: Home Library Service, Airyhall Library Springfield Road Aberdeen AB15 7RF Inchgarth Community Centre, Aboyne Pl, Aberdeen AB10 7DR Ferryhill Community Centre, Albury Road, Aberdeen, AB11 6TN Books and Beans Café, 22 Belmont Street, AB10 1JH CFINE, 2-4 Poynernook Road, AB11 5RW Multi-Cultural Centre, 472 George Street AB25 1ER

Waste and Recycling Aberdeen City Council brown bin collections are changing. From 1 September 2019, households using brown bins will need a permit to have garden waste collected. The charge for the service is £30 per year. There is no charge if you only use your brown bin for food waste. From 1 September, brown bins containing garden waste must display a valid permit to be emptied. The permit will only be valid for the address printed on it. Your brown bin collection day will stay the same.

Running your engine unnecessarily while your vehicle is stationary pollutes the environment, costs money and is against the law. An idling engine can produce up to twice as many exhaust emissions as an engine in motion Exhaust emissions contain a range of air pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, hydrocarbons and particulate matter Traffic fumes can make asthma conditions worse Children are more vulnerable to air pollution because they breathe 50% more air per pound of body weight than adults If you are going to be parked for more than 30 seconds, turn off your engine – idling your engine uses more fuel than it takes to re-start your engine. Idling is Illegal! Vehicle idling is an offence against the Road Traffic (Vehicle Emissions) (Fixed Penalty) (Scotland) Regulations 2003. The law states that it is an offence to idle your engine unnecessarily, and you may be issued with a £20 fixed penalty notice. The legislation covers all vehicles on public roads including buses, taxis and private cars. The legislation does not apply to: Vehicles that move slowly due to road works or congestion Vehicles stopped at traffic lights Vehicles under test/repair, or Vehicles defrosting a windscreen in very cold weather Please SWITCH OFF!!

How do I apply for a permit?

Why is a charge being introduced?

What happens if I move house?

You can apply for your permit online from 15 July. (Note; you must be on a brown bin route and have a brown bin to participate.) To find out more, order a brown bin (if you don’t already have one) and apply for a permit please visit: www.aberdeen. city.gov.uk/gardenwaste. You should allow 21 days for your permit to be delivered and will need to apply by 10 August to be sure you have your permit by 1 September.

These changes have been made to help Aberdeen City Council bridge a funding gap of £41.2 million as the result of reduced funding, rising demand and growing cost pressures. You can find out more about how the Council is funded and what we spend our money on at www.aberdeencity. gov.uk/councilspending.

If you move home, your permit should remain at the property. You cannot take it with you, and you will not receive a refund. If you move to another property that has an existing permit, you can continue to use it until it expires. For more info please visit: www.aberdeen.city.gov.uk/ gardenwaste.

If you do not have access to the internet, the Customer Contact Centre staff will help with the application over the phone. There is now only the one contact number for ACC and calls are fielded through the switchboard to appropriate departments. Please call 0300 200292 to be connected to the Customer Contact Centre.

What if I don’t want to pay? You will still be able to take your garden waste to your local Household Waste and Recycling Centre, free of charge, or, you could choose to compost your garden waste at home. You can also reduce your garden waste by using a mulching lawnmower. You should keep your brown bin for recycling your food waste even if you choose not to pay for a permit.

e are delighted to welcome Dr Rowan back to the practice following her maternity leave and we are very pleased to announce that she has joined Cults Medical Group as a partner. We would also like to thank and wish Dr Dolapo all the best for the future. Many of you will have seen Dr Dolapo during Dr Rowan’s period of leave.

In the past few months we have experienced a sharp rise in the number of missed appointments at the practice. We do have a text reminder service so please make sure we have an up-to-date mobile telephone number for you. While this is a great service, it is not to be wholly relied upon as a means of remembering your appointment. Please also take a written note to add to your calendar or diary. Please also be aware that relatives will not receive a text reminder when a dependant/child/parent has an appointment booked. If you are unable to attend an appointment, please let us know as soon as possible so we may offer the appointment to another patient. During the months of April and May, for example, 83 GP and 99 nurse appointments were wasted due to non-attendance. Medicines Care and Review Service (previously known as CMS) If you are on a longstanding regular medication, you could be suitable to receive serial prescriptions, where your pharmacy will receive a prescription for 48 weeks on one prescription. This will then be dispensed by the pharmacist to the patient in 8 weekly blocks. If you are going on holiday or lose some medication you can then just speak to your pharmacist instead of contacting your GP. To qualify for this service you need to be. On a regular medication. Signed up for your prescription to go to a regular pharmacy. Both your GP and pharmacist feel that you would be a suitable recipient. Check with your pharmacy or our reception team for more details. We are very happy to welcome two new members of staff to our Reception/Administration team, Mrs Sally Macdougall and Mrs Sandra Garnham.

Camphill School We have had a very busy term and are pleased to share a few of our highlights. Spring Fayre

On Saturday 11th May, we held our annual Spring Fayre. We were very lucky with the weather and welcomed many new and old faces to Murtle Estate. There were wonderful cakes, live music, a tasty BBQ, wood-turning demonstrations, bike tours and much more!

Kiltwalk and BP Coast-2-Coast Cycle On Sunday 2nd June, we hosted the start of the Kiltwalk Wee Wander for the second year. Over 750 people gathered to participate in the 5-mile charity walk from Murtle Estate to Duthie Park. In the afternoon, we welcomed 75 riders taking part in the BP Coast-2-Coast Cycle. The cyclists covered 250 miles over three days, starting from the Isle of Arran and finishing at Murtle Estate. Well done everyone! Murtle Farm We welcomed two male pygmy goats to Murtle Farm. We asked for name suggestions from the school and via our Facebook page and were delighted with the huge response. The goats were named Caesar (the grey one) and Chutney (the brown one). Thank You! Come rain or shine our students are out delivering fruit and vegetables to the houses. A BIG thank you to Aberdeen University Student Charity Campaign for donating £1,450 so we could purchase new electric carts. Eco-School Green Flag We are delighted to announce that we have maintained our Eco-School Green Flag Award. Well done to the students and staff for their hard work and commitment to making Camphill School a greener place. We have also enjoyed joining the singing group at the Cults Kirk community hub and look forward to it starting again after a summer recess. We continue to attract volunteers from all over the world, with recent new additions from Japan, Norway and Columbia. We like to ensure they experience all things Scottish, so we took a trip to the Aberdeen Highland games to enjoy one of the cultural highlights of the year.

e enjoyed the Culter Gala where we were able to “spread the word” about our new venture – and also make some money from the sale of some surplus and refurbished items donated by the good folk of Culter and district. Thank you – and please keep offering us anything you think we might be able to use (or sell)!

Our numbers continue to increase – we are almost at 100 – and we are making progress on our priority plans to make the Shed accessible for the disabled with a ramp and a suitable toilet, and also a new kitchen layout, by October. The main funding for this will come from a City Council ‘Developers’ Contribution’ grant, and we will do as much of the work as we can. We’re also undertaking some internal partition changes to create a sizeable woodworking area which should be in operation by the time you read this. You don’t just have to be a woodworking enthusiast to join the shed though – we also have groups focussing on computers and gardening, and are arranging a programme of evening talks by speakers, most recently on community policing and advanced motoring, with men’s health and cookery still to come! We’re currently open Mondays 1-4, Wednesdays and Saturdays 10-1. Check out what’s happening, or enrol, by visiting our website www.culterdistrictmensshed. org.uk. Membership is free, but of course fundraising is important for us and every penny will be put to good use look out for our wooden ‘shed’ collecting boxes in local shops where you can put any spare change!

The Scottish Ambulance Service’s New Clinical Response Model (NCRM) The new approach has improved the way the ambulance service responds to emergency calls and it has saved lives with more people in Scotland surviving a cardiac arrest. Background Triage is the system the medical profession uses to asses a patient’s condition – generally this enables medical staff to determine how sick a patient is, how quickly they need help and the most appropriate response for their condition. In emergency situations, triage enables the medical professionals to ensure we get our quickest response to critically ill patients whose lives are in danger and the right response to less ill patients who need our help but may

not require immediate help. This allows the ambulance service to maximise the resources they have and treat patients in the most efficient way possible to save lives.

one of three categories determined by the seriousness of their condition. Our new triage system places patients into one of five categories.

The New Clinical Response Model was introduced in November 2016. Prior to this, the service used a system that was introduced across the whole of the UK in 1974. That system had not changed very much since its introduction.

Patients in the purple category are our most critically ill patients - those who are most at risk of dying. Generally speaking, they are patients who have a more than 10% chance of suffering a cardiac arrest (Though in reality, the rate of cardiac arrest in the purple category is actually as high as 50%). Those patients in our red category are less at risk of a cardiac arrest, but they still need urgent medical attention.

The old model did not take into account the fact that the role of ambulance staff has changed significantly. In the 1970’s, ambulance drivers would pick a patient up and transfer them to the nearest hospital where they would be seen by a doctor. Nowadays paramedics and technicians are qualified medical professionals – they can treat patients at the scene and some can make clinical decisions previously only reserved for doctors. As this system was outdated, the ambulance service carried out a systematic review of two years’ worth of data relating to our ambulance responses. The aim was to see if we could use our resources more effectively and save more lives. We also wanted to better identify time-critical patients more often, provide the right response for patients first time and give patients and staff a better overall experience whilst improving their survival chances. The New Model The old system we used placed patients into

LEARN ITALIAN Why not join an Italian Class in Cults - Aberdeen? You can choose day or evening classes: Beginner to Advanced level. These patients need an immediate response from the ambulance service and, under the new system, we prioritise these patients above all others – we will even divert ambulances already heading to those who are less sick. This occasionally causes a delay for less critically ill patients but the consequence is that we are helping to save many more lives as a result. Your chances of surviving a cardiac arrest are also better if you have two crews on scene – CPR is very labour intensive, so having at least three people on hand to take it in turns is

A cardiac arrest is when the heart stops dead – it is quite distinct from a heart attack. For every minute it is not pumping oxygen-rich blood to the brain, the patient’s chances of surviving are estimated to reduce by 10 per cent. The sooner CPR is performed, the greater the chances of survival.

hugely beneficial to the patient. Our new model aims to get these resources to patients quickly. Less critical patients Patients in other categories – amber, then yellow, then green – will sometimes experience a slower ambulance response, generally because we will be prioritising our resources to those patients in the purple and red categories who are most at risk of dying. It’s worth noting that the yellow category makes up around 60% of the total work we do – and around 30% of patients within this category have medical issues that are resolved without a trip to hospital. For those in the green category we will most likely seek an ‘alternative care pathway’ for them. This means the best treatment for that person might be medical attention at home, or referral to a service based in their community, e.g. for people who fall and are otherwise uninjured who may benefit from some form of physiotherapy, rather than a lengthy trip to A&E and a possible long wait within a hospital’s emergency department. NCRM results In February 2019, we published the results of two separate evaluations of how well our new response model was working. The results were extremely good. Our own analysis, and one carried out by Stirling University, found that the new model was helping us save more lives.

The results showed that, as a result of our changes and better prioritising of patients, there had been a 43% increase in the number of our most at risk patients (those in the purple category) that had survived 30 days after being taken to hospital.

needs.

Another benefit of the new response model is that we have seen a 100% increase in the number of times two crews have arrived on scene in these cardiac arrest cases.

There are a very small minority of cases where some patients are waiting an unacceptably long time for treatment and we are taking action to improve our systems for these types of patients too – with clinical advisors regularly checking in on them and an automatic upgrade to a high priority call out if any vulnerable patients are waiting too long or if their condition deteriorates at any point.

Obviously there are likely to be many factors involved in saving a patient’s life: more members of the public know CPR; we have a growing network of community first responders; we have more public access defibrillators; and, of course, the dedicated, hard work going on in individual hospitals – all of which can contribute to a patient’s chances of survival. However, the clinical evidence shows that by having two crews in attendance to help save a life in a cardiac arrest situation, the chances of survival increase. We are confident that the way we are now responding to these emergencies is having a positive impact.

The evidence is showing that these changes are having an extremely positive impact upon patient care and outcomes – with more lives being saved as a result and better treatment for all types of patients.

It looks like we might get some Aberdeen summer weather, to go with the rain we have had, so it is a good idea to check how your hedges and trees have grown. We ask that residents who have homes bordering pavements and pathways please take a few minutes to walk around the perimeter and trim back any plants that are overhanging the pavement, so that pedestrians do not have to move out in the road to get past. We have seen some instances where people pushing prams find it hard to get past. Your efforts will be much appreciated.

CULTS PRIMARY PTA NEWS The PTA were very lucky with the weather on June 22nd for the Cults Primary Summer Fair. There was a brilliant atmosphere as it was so busy with families from the school and the surrounding area. The P7 Glee Club gave their farewell performance, the school choir sang beautifully and the local Rock Choir performed again. Our class parents really stole the show with the most creative and thoroughly indulgent hampers we’ve ever seen so the raffle was a massive success! We are so lucky to have families from all over the world at our school, many of whom happen to be extremely talented cooks. The International Food Stall was packed with the most mouth-watering donations and was a total sell-out. A great big thank you to the BBQ Dads, the Chain Gang, the Tombola ladies, the face painters and all the other volunteers who came out to make it a really great day. A special mention goes to Keystore Cults for the Pick ‘n’ Mix, Sonya Angus: The Unique Boutique for raffle & tombola donations, Fits The Scoop for their generous profit-share and Skyline Trampoline Park for the Guess the Teacher prizes! Also, a big thanks to the primary and secondary pupils who ran stalls, games and helped behind the scenes. What great kids! Thanks to everyone who donated toys, books, tombola prizes, hamper contributions, baking and more. We raised an incredible £10,000 for the school! A record-breaking amount for the current committee who will be handing over to an all-new team at the AGM in September. We’ve had a fantastic two and a half years on the committee and, with the help of the past committee, have made a number of positive contributions to the school including, new paths, the Green Unit garden, netball court lines & strips, library books, laptops, projector & screen, football pitch repairs, tablets, water fountains and more. Help your PTA keep up the great work by supporting our ongoing fundraisers. 200 Club lottery numbers are on sale now for the 2019/20 school year with the first of 10 draws to win up to £100 taking place at the end of September 2019. Keep your new school uniforms and other items out of the lost and found by getting some sticky name labels from stickins.co.uk (use ID 5482) or mynametags.com (use ID 24137) while raising funds for the school. We now have a permanent Rag Bag clothing & shoe collection bin for the community in the school grounds and we collect batteries and ink cartridges at the office too. The new PTA committee have lots of exciting events being planned, including the Christmas Ladies Night, a magic show, talent show and much more. Follow us on Facebook for details. 16 August to 7 September 2019 Each year’s Festival programme is an exciting mix of activities to tempt residents into getting out and about or trying something new. Some events are one-offs and others have been running for a number of years (some since the first Festival back in 1975!). We are grateful to the groups, clubs and small businesses who provide the Festival events free of charge. If you enjoy the event, please consider donating, joining and / or supporting these organisations in the longer term to help maintain our thriving community. This year marks the 25th anniversary of one of our longest-standing events – the Calligraphy Exhibition. On show will be a representation of work throughout the years as well as projects undertaken this past session. This is to be surrounded by local garden flowers arranged by a team from the Cults Church. We are delighted to welcome the Newton Dee Folk Festival into this year’s programme. The Folk Club meet in the evening every two months. This is their 5th 2-day Festival and we are delighted to make it part of the MBC Festival programme this year. There is no cost to attend during the day (the evening concert costs £6). You can enjoy Folk Music in its widest sense - traditional folk music, music from around the world, contemporary folk, flamenco, a bit of blues, country, bluegrass, bagpipes, jazz and whatever people are enthusiastic to share with others. Please go along and support them and pop into the Newton Dee Café while there! This year’s programme also features a talk and demonstration by Elaine Lindsay from Something Corny. Elaine is a member of the Guild of Straw Craftsmen and she blends traditional with contemporary designs to create accessories which have been featured nationally and internationally. She will present images of completed work followed by refreshments and a demonstration. Places are limited at this event – please contact Marjory if you would like to purchase a ticket.

If you can’t find something to fall in love with at Sonya’s, where can you? Most Milltimber, Bieldside and Cults residents are sure to be familiar with Sonya Angus, the charismatic and charming owner of The Unique Boutique, by now. But if not, you’re forgiven. This Aladdin’s Cave for adults is one of Aberdeen’s best hidden gems, after all. Nestled in The Courtyard, Cults and previously known as Sonya Angus: Gifts, Furniture and Interiors, the award-winning independent business was recently rebranded to reflect the exclusive and luxurious, yet cosy and friendly atmosphere Sonya crafted during her first two years in business. Despite the new branding, the boutique retains its core values. Divine products remain Sonya’s passion and exceptional customer service will always be her speciality. The

small, independent business ethos runs through her veins and, in an increasingly impersonal world, The Unique Boutique is there to make each and every client feel special. The team pride themselves on going above and beyond – whether you want something set aside for pick up or you’d like the item to be giftwrapped, gorgeous and sent to the other side of the world, no request is too big or small. Still the go-to girl for irresistible gifts and treats, whether it’s an out-of-theordinary gift for someone special or a treat ‘to me, from me,’ Sonya now ensures her customers can accessorise their home and wardrobe in one visit. With fashion having forever been a big part of Sonya’s life, adding this offering to the boutique seemed a

natural fit. She dipped her toe in the water more than a year ago with her ever-popular ponchos and hasn’t looked back. Offering a great colour choice and fab versatility, they’ve transformed many outfits in the north-east. Cashmere mix jumpers followed, then scarves and other appealing accessories. Winter saw her faux fur pompom scarves flying out of the door and now, in the height of summer, Sonya’s linen dresses and tunics are selling like hot cakes. This comes as no surprise, however, when you consider Sonya’s background. A retail guru by trade, she’s is a highly respected personal and home stylist with a CV that includes launching Molton Brown’s flagship Edinburgh store, and managing million-pound budgets and designer brands at the iconic department store, Jenners. As such, she’s intensely aware of trends whilst remaining passionate about not just replicating what everyone else is doing. She harnesses her expert eye and extensive international contact base

to find the finest and most original lifestyle products from across the globe. This has resulted in a boutique that’s simply brimming with the very best gifts, furniture, homeware, fashion and fashion accessories, as well as truly authentic pre-loved, upcycled and bespoke pieces made especially for the shop. And with many of these glorious gifts and treasurable treats exclusive to the boutique, it’s her customers’ only opportunity to shop these collections locally. Of course, you can give the gift of Sonya’s too. The perfect treat to them from you, let them experience The Unique Boutique for themselves with one of Sonya’s brand new, simply exquisite and beautifully boxed gift vouchers. If they can’t find something to fall in love with at Sonya’s, where can they? So, it’s crystal clear that, from world-renowned brands to new local names, you’ll be choosing from the very best on the market at The Unique Boutique. Pop in and say hello – you’ll always feel like the only customer.

Understanding the Issues Facing Young People

F

ollowing discussion with some parents and different Community Groups it has become apparent that parents feel that they lack knowledge on the issues that face their young people today and would like to learn more. Issues that were flagged were: lack of knowledge on the different types of drugs, their status in law, the side effects, signs to look out for and where you can go for support or advice. Social media, the threats from grooming or bullying; mental health in young people, as well as spotting any warning signs and how to access help are all concerns too. When you become a parent there is no handbook on how best to support your child. Every child is different and brings different challenges. “It takes a village to raise a child” is an African proverb meaning that an entire community must interact with children for those children to grow up in a safe and healthy environment. It is a wise saying that holds true for our communities too and means that we, as community members have a responsibility to become informed and take action. By working together, we can support each other to provide resources that respond to our community needs. There are many examples of community resources - youth groups such as Scouts and Guides, sporting groups, resilience groups and local Churches, litter picks and in bloom groups etc. In order to bridge the knowledge gap that parents feel exists we will host an information session where we will discuss some of these challenges, and how best to deal with them as parents and community members. Feedback from that initial session will then let us develop and organise more in-depth training and support for families and communities. It is our intention to arrange the first session in September and we will announce the date via schools, churches and other community-based websites. Meantime, if some of these issues are affecting someone you know, confidential help is available. Strength and Balance Strength and Balance is a very popular exercise class in the communities of Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. I have been delivering these classes for the benefit of older adults for nearly 10 years now. Each time I speak to people who do not come to a class, they tell me one thing, “My Balance is bad.” The first thing I ask of class participants is to complete a health questionnaire. This gives me the knowledge to advise people according to their health condition(s), potential medications and how they feel about their physical ability when they come to a class. Confidence in your balance can be regained, providing you are guided correctly through the steps. No matter what, moving is better than not moving. Coming to a class has many health benefits and increased balance ability is only one of them. Coming to a class helps to make new friends and catch up with old ones not seen for a while. Coming to a class builds confidence in your physical ability which reduces the fear of poor balance. Everyone is made welcome at my classes. Strength and Balance Presents

The Strength and Balance Classes I deliver are full of people who come to catch up with friends, go for refreshments after class and enjoy a whole social life around the class. The exercises are quite secondary to why they come along. Nonetheless, the health benefits of coming are still achieved. I was asked by a passerby, one day, when coming out of a class, ”Well, are you all a lot fitter now than you were before going in?” I replied, “Well, we are certainly not any less fit!” Keeping what you have is as important as making gains in an exercise class. Coming along to enjoy the company is as good a reason to do it as any. Your first class is free.

Adult ballet! Really? When you are considering a new form of exercise, ballet may not be the first that comes to mind. I mean, don’t you need to be skinny and wear a leotard or even a tutu? Or at least have danced as a child? There are so many benefits to practicing ballet as an adult. First, it is a vigorous and effective workout that engages the whole body. It strengthens and tones the core muscles, the stomach and upper back, bottom and all the main leg muscles. It improves your posture, co-ordination, balance, and flexibility, which is important for mature students as it can help with reducing the risk of falls and broken bones in old age. Ballet is also good for exercising your mind. You have to memorise movements, concentrate and adjust to different routines. But more than that, it is fun and makes you feel good about yourself. So, what can you expect from a ballet class? A group of people of all ages, shapes and sizes, men and women, who have got together for the exercise and to enjoy themselves. We’ve had people from 20-70. The music isn’t bad either! We go to Adagio, at RGU, which is the only school in Scotland which teaches the Vaganova method of ballet. This is a Russian style known for its precision, grace and fluidity. It emphasises strength, flexibility and endurance and was used to train some of the most respected ballet dancers of all time – Pavlova, Nureyev and Barishnikov. Needless to say, we are a long way short of that but that doesn’t stop us having a good time. Please don’t think you won’t be good enough. Ballet for adults is not competitive. Its about developing your own ability and seeing yourself improve. Nor do you need special clothes or shoes to try it. There are a range of classes for all abilities, in daytime, evening and weekends. Over the years we’ve had complete beginners and professionals. If you want to find out more, please contact Ewa Richie: 07801 499393.

Music Festival Success once again for Culter Chorus

and has 346 registered players who play in 11 different age groups through 17 active teams. We aim to provide development pathways that allow players to reach their potential while maintaining a community-based ethos. For youngsters of ages 7-18 years the club provides football coaching and matches. We run noncompetitive squads for school years P2 to P7, and teams in the S1 to S6 age groups that compete in the local Aberdeen leagues. Girls’ Section The club is looking to establish a girls’ section of primary school age for the 2019/20 season and is seeking volunteer coaches to help set up and run the section.

Peterculter’s own ladies’ barbershop chorus, Albacappella, is celebrating after remaining undefeated in the 2019 Aberdeen Music Festival Barbershop Chorus category. The chorus, which consists of over 30 ladies from across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, won the trophy in 2018, and this year was announced joint winner. Albacappella sings four-part harmony, with a repertoire which varies from traditional barbershop singing to modern pop songs. The chorus recently held an introductory course for new members and as a result over ten new ladies joined the group and performed at the Music Festival for the first time. The judge commended Albacappella’s singing and performance, enjoying their renditions of Songbird and The One I Love. Chairperson Linden Tapper said: “We are delighted to be joint winners and very happy to share the honour with our friends at Aberdeen Chorus and Granite City Chorus. Aberdeen Music Festival is one of our favourite events and we always enjoy singing alongside and for our friends across the city. “This year was particularly poignant for us as almost a third of the ladies on stage were competing with us for the first time. We all worked hard to perfect our harmonies and were thrilled to be named as joint winners.” Albacappella meets at St Peter’s Heritage Hall, Peterculter, on Wednesdays at 7.30pm. New members are always welcome and more information can be found at www.albacappella. co.uk or by calling 07834 490290.

Culter Youth Football Club Culter Youth Football Club was formed in 1983 with a primary purpose to provide football for boys and girls in the club’s catchment area, from Airyhall to Drumoak. The club runs as a registered Scottish charity

The club can help with: training facilities; financial support to provide kit and equipment; training for the adult coaches; and youth coaches from the senior teams to help at coaching sessions. It is envisaged that training sessions would be held on Friday evenings between 6pm and 7pm at Cults Academy and that the girls would participate in non-competitive football festivals on selected Sunday mornings throughout the season. 2013 Age Group The 2013 age group has recently been established and welcomes both boys and girls from P2. Training will be run on Friday evenings starting in August. The club is looking for volunteer coaches to help with the 2013 age group. Crombie Playing Facility, Culter. The club has its own small playing facility next to Culter Juniors ground in Culter. The facilities have recently been improved by the installation of changing and toilet facilities. Sponsorship The club is looking for a new sponsor for the club website which is being rebuilt. We recently held our annual awards ceremony for our competitive age group, where various awards were handed out for Player of the Year, Team of the Year and Club Official of the Year. The development age group have also enjoyed their end of season presentation which took place in the format of a fun day event where all the youngsters came together to play fun matches and received medals for their achievements. There was also plenty of other things to do on the day with Beat the Goalie, raffles, ice cream and a BBQ supplied by our friends at the Sand dollar Café. If anyone has any budding players of any age group or if any adults wish to get involved in the club in any capacity, then please contact Jason White on 07541027846 or email cultheryouthfc@gmail.com. You can also contact us via our Facebook page ‘Culter youth FC’ (@Culteryouth).

Cults Lawn Tennis Club Even with the rather unpredictable weather, our members are making the most of the long light nights to get out and play tennis. For our competitive members, we have six men’s and four ladies’ teams in the North East of Scotland Lawn Tennis Association summer league playing weekly matches. The ladies’ social team is also enjoying taking part in the Monday Deeside League. The club has Singles Box Leagues being played and for those of us just looking to have a friendly game there is social play on a Tuesday and Thursday morning and Saturday and Sunday afternoon, when we get together to play a few games with each other. For some friendly competition between ourselves we had a great night at the Midsummer Social Tournament and BBQ. There is something for everyone at the Cults Lawn Tennis Club. Our Juniors and Minis are also busy. Junior Night on Thursday evenings has a great turnout each week where our junior members come and play games together. We also have coaching every other night of the week so there is a session to fit everyone. During the school holidays the coaching staff are running summer camps (full details can be found on our website). As a fundraiser we are again collecting for Bags2School. If you are tidying out old school clothes/holiday clothes/ shoes/updating bedding & linens, please remember us and drop any donations to the club during the week of 13-18 September; all donations gratefully accepted. If you are a beginner and are interested in taking up tennis, we have a special one year Beginner’s Membership Offer of £60. The next block of lessons is due to start in late July and it’s only £6 for each lesson. Included in the Membership Offer there is a Thursday night session where you can practise your new skills.

With six floodlit, all-weather courts our members are able to play all year round come rain or shine. Cults Lawn Tennis Club offers something for everyone from complete beginner to A team player; if you are interested in playing tennis, you are welcome to join us. so successful that another evening (Italian?) is being planned. At the heart of the Community As part of our commitment to the local community, we have opened our club, as always, to fellow sportspersons in the area. Our Open Day is an obvious example of this. We have acted as hosts to the BonAccord MBC (ladies) Hockey Club who held their presentation of prizes in our club. This was a great fun event with, shall we say, a somewhat different age demographic than we are used to in our club. We have also entertained the ‘Dads’ from the International School who came along for a game of bowls and some refreshments. Then in the same way we had the football ‘Dads’— those faithful fathers who ferry their sons and daughters all over Aberdeen for our national game (or is that bowls where we are much more successful on the international stage?) Open Doors A work group of members meets every Tuesday morning doing all these jobs that need to be done to keep the green and the club in prime condition. If you want to know more about the club that is a good time to come along and have a chat. Time it right and you will be treated to a rowie as well! The club’s web site is www.cultsbowlingclub.weebly.com There you will find details of our programme and much general information about the club. The season continues apace. We have had teams playing in many competitions: Scottish, Bon Accord; Friday League; Monday Triples; ADLB; Northern Triples; Dunnottar Fours; along with Saturday friendlies against other Aberdeen clubs. These are in addition to all our internal competitions such as Mixed Fours, St Devenick’s Trophy and Jubilee Pairs. Of course, we have our social events as well. Pre-season we had a successful coffee morning. Since then we have had a well-attended Open Day in midMay, a Fish and Chips Fun Day in June and, a new venture, a game of bowls followed by a curry evening on a Saturday. This latter was

Forecourt Art Group We are now halfway through the season, so I hope you have had a chance to visit the Culter Heritage tearooms and view the lovely exhibition we have there. Artists change their exhibits on a regular basis so there is always something new to see, admire and hopefully buy! We also have a lovely selection of blank cards made from original artwork that have been very popular this year. The group are now beginning to focus on our annual exhibition at Blairs Chapel on the South Deeside Road as part of the NEOS (North East Open Studios). At Blairs, you will be able to view some larger pieces of artwork from our group as well as have the opportunity to buy prints and cards. The exhibition takes place in St. Mary’s Chapel and is open from Saturday September 14th to Monday 23rd inclusive (Monday to Saturday 10–5pm and Sunday 12–5pm). This will coincide with Aberdeen Open Doors allowing the opportunity to visit the exhibition and the museum in one go. There will be one or more of the artists on duty throughout who will be delighted to speak to you about their work and answer any questions. For further details visit our Facebook Page ‘Forecourt art group’ or contact Paula Silvester 07773949903

The Aberdeen Chorus of Sweet Adelines The Aberdeen Chorus of Sweet Adelines recently competed in Cardiff, with 67 female members, at the Regional Sweet Adeline International (SAI) competition. The Aberdeen Chorus won a silver medal with our highest ever score. There were 16 competing choruses from our Region #31 which includes the UK and The Netherlands. This high score has earned us a ‘Wildcard’ to compete at the SAI international competition in Louisville, Kentucky, USA in October 2020. We will be representing Aberdeen, Scotland, along with around 8,000 other women from all over the world and competing against around 40 other choruses. The Aberdeen Chorus is a choir of around 80 singers from in and around Aberdeen who sing in four part harmony a capella style. The four part style sung by the chorus is often called ‘Barbershop Style’. Our director, Sophie Radcliffe, has a degree in Music from Aberdeen University. She became co- director with Gwen Topp in 2015 and took over as sole director, when Gwen retired, in 2017. Next year our Chorus also has its 40th Birthday which will add to the amazing year ahead. We are very excited about our Wildcard place at the International Competition in Kentucky and are actively looking for women, who love to sing, to be a part of this amazing medal winning chorus and to come and join us. We are now on a fundraising drive and it would be great if we could find funding or a local business to provide sponsorship.

Cults Playgroup News

During the summer term at playgroup, we look forward to lots of outdoor time in the garden. Many days of rain have led to lots of ‘squelchy’ fun in the mud pit and some hard digging of quite solid soil. On days of better weather, apparatus for physical play can be spaciously arranged outside and sand and water play take on a new dimension in the open air. This year we have had lots of fun with outdoor climbing frames and tubs of small ‘loose parts’. The children have helped plant out new summer bedding plants. Potatoes and strawberries have also been planted. Watering the new plants is always popular, though not always necessary! Hunting for mini beasts had led to linked art and craft activities. We have also had a jar of caterpillars and watched a cocoon develop and butterfly emerge. Activities for the term have been linked to interests of the children. Space toys, pirates and ‘Super Hero’ figures are always popular. Wood planks are frequently out and used with cars, diggers and tools. Building blocks and Lego test the construction skills of the children. ‘Book Bug’ bags supplied by the Scottish Government have been gifted to each child after a special event with parents and carers who were invited to a session to hear the stories and rhymes read aloud and the songs sung. In order to outwit unseasonal weather, we have had a variety of specialist workers come into the playgroup setting. These have included Calli from STEM (formerly Satrosphere) who arrived with a container of tadpoles to give a science talk and ‘The Critter Keeper’ bringing in his animals. Energetic sessions have included a movement session with Birgitte Legge of ABC Education, a ‘Rugbytots ‘session with Kevin Brown and ‘Hip Hop’ dancing with Douglas from the ‘Danscentre’. The end of term brings a special party with face painting to suit each child. In June, we had a charity ‘Welly Walk’ to support MISS (Miscarriage Information Support Service) and Aber Necessities who support local underprivileged families with items they need to care for babies and children. Thank you to all parents and carers for their support.

At the start of July, all the tubs and planters had their summer bedding in place and the hanging baskets were on the lampposts. In previous years, watering of the hanging baskets has been carried out by Aberdeen City Council. This service has not been free of charge and the annual cost has amounted to approximately half of our annual expenditure. So much so, and with an understandable increase proposed by ACC, this year a new approach is being tried. A small portable water carrier with battery powered pump has been purchased and is being used to water the baskets. The baskets themselves have a reservoir underneath the soil compartment and so a top up about once a week is all that is required. Even so, with 24 baskets in total this requires quite an amount of time to transport water and top up each basket. Volunteers to help with this over the weeks to the beginning of October would be appreciated. More details can be seen at the community website http:// cbmcommunity.org.uk/donate-to-mbcbm. Alternatively contact me below. There has been no further interest for the idea of an ‘Open Gardens Weekend’ to be held towards the end of May and so this will not take place, at least for this year. If you are interested in helping with MBCBM activities, please contact Graham Payne, 01224 868827. It could be simply by adopting a planter and offering to water as required or help with planting in spring or summer. Every little bit helps.

In early July, we will say goodbye to many children moving to a new setting. We look forward to August and welcoming back some familiar faces and meeting new children ready to start the group. We still have places available for August, so if your child is 2.5 years or older, do contact us on our mobile: 07842 470828 or email cultsplaygroup@gmail.com Our sessions run during term-time from 9am until 12.10 pm at the North Hall on Quarry Road.

further than they might easily manage. We usually make a short stop on the return journey at a pub/ hotel for refreshments, which can be alcoholic if you do not have to drive to the bus pick up. If venturing up Deeside and some other directions, pick up points at Cults, Bieldside, Milltimber and often Culter and beyond are possible. Walks are made throughout the year with distances being tailored to the season, likely weather and day length. Routes are modified if really bad weather is forecast and walking in a group is safer than walking alone or as a couple. Advice on equipment and route navigation are available to newcomers. The full programme of walks, talks and social meetings for the year 2019 – 2020 will be on our website http://www.cultshillwalkingclub. org.uk/ after the first indoor meeting in September. Forthcoming Diary of Walks and Talks

The Cults Hillwalking Club has been on the go for over 40 years. It has a number of attractions which have contributed to this longevity. Walkers are transported by bus to the start of the walk and picked up at the end. This makes A to B walking easier than if cars are used for transport. Bus fares are only £10 which is good value for the distances often travelled. Most walks offer a choice of a longer or shorter route so that those who are not so fast are not obliged to walk quicker or

e are re-introducing our text messaging service, and this should be back in operation by the time of publication of this MBC News. The service will be available for those aged 16 years and over, and will be used to: send reminders about appointments; notify patients that test results are available; send invitations to clinics as appropriate (e.g. flu clinic, diabetes clinic); send reminders about medication reviews; and to send updates about any important items of practice news. For this to work we obviously need to have your up to date mobile phone number on our secure database, and your consent for us to use your number. We will be organising the obtaining of consent via a form available at the practice and with prescriptions; information and the consent form will also be available via the practice website (see below). Staff and team training are important for us at Peterculter Medical Practice but the previous plan to have occasional, planned, whole afternoon closures for this was often affected by late-notice cancellation, due to poor availability of emergency medical cover (across the city). In such circumstances we have usually continued with a shorter period of closure (two hours, between 1.30 – 3.30pm), and an emergency phone number is available (notified via the answering message on the practice number) for any urgent medical matters. These training sessions would normally take place every two to three months.

Milltimber School and Nursery PTA July 2019 There is a sense of anticipation and excitement across Milltimber Primary School and Nursery as plans for a new school continue to progress. Earlier this year, designs and visuals for the new building were unveiled to pupils and staff. Parents, teachers and members of the community attended drop-in sessions at the school to see the impressive initial designs. The architects, council officials and local councillors were on hand to discuss the development, to answer questions and to share as much information as possible at the early stages of the consultation period. A presentation showed the new designs and plans in some detail, as well as giving a preview of the indoor space using the recently completed Stoneywood School as an example. Parents were keen to see what the school would look like, where it would be situated, how much outdoor space was planned, and to get a flavour of the classrooms and indoor spaces. The consultation period, which sought feedback from all interested parties, ended in June. A meeting at the school heard that all views would be gathered in advance of a final decision due to be made at a council meeting on September 17th. Building work for the new school at Oldfold Farm is due to be completed around August 2021, with a view to all pupils moving to the new building at, or near, that time. Parents, staff and pupils at Milltimber School and Nursery enjoyed a busy run-up to Summer. We have an enthusiastic Parent Teacher Association and our Parent Council is actively engaged in supporting the school across key development areas. We all take great pride in our school and appreciate how important it is for parents and the school to work together to be the best that we can be. The PTA’s biggest fund-raiser, the Summer Fair, was a great success. Held in glorious sunshine, the event was very well attended, and the range of stalls, games and activities proved popular with children, families and friends. Lots of fun, laughter, smiles and the most wonderful live music. Thank you to all involved for helping to raise funds to provide valuable new learning resources for our children. Our new school and nursery values are being recognised and celebrated across the school since their launch earlier this year. Our values: Help, Enjoy, Achieve, Respect and Trust are at the heart of our school and are what we all live by to help us achieve great things together. We held our first family ceilidh evening before the end of term. The school hall became a sea of tartan, with nearly 100 children and grown-ups dancing the evening away to fantastic Scottish music. A great idea and a wonderful evening! After two false starts due to poor weather, our school sports day took place in glorious sunshine on the second last week of term. Families were treated to excellent displays of sporting ability and sportsmanship as children from Primary 1 to Primary 7 competed in athletic and fun events. As ever, the strawberries and ice-cream stalls proved popular in keeping everyone cool. The Nursery children held their own sports indoors earlier in June, which proved a great success. These are exciting times for our school and we look forward to our new term after the Summer break. Milltimber Playgroup News July marked the end of the term here at Milltimber Playgroup before the long summer break. It’s been a fantastic year for the playgroup, with a busy and well attended final term. We’ll be sad to say goodbye to those children leaving to start primary school; however, we wish them the best of luck, and we are excited to welcome back returning families, and those starting with us for the first time next term, for another year of fun and learning. It’s been an action-packed term with fun activities and learning opportunities and the children continue to enjoy the outdoor spaces surrounding the community hall and the large range of indoor activities and toys that the playgroup offers. The recent good weather has allowed the children to take their play outside where they have enjoyed picnics on the playgroup patio, running and jumping together and exploring their senses with water and

bubbles. They have also been making good use of the fantastic playpark next to the playgroup. The children have been planting seeds and learning how to look after them by watering them and watching them grow. There has also been lots of singing, dancing and making music. Child Smile paid us a visit, teaching the children about the importance of caring for their teeth. The Wednesday and Friday Forest School continues to thrive, with several new children this term. The children have built a zip line and a hammock which provided lots of entertainment. They also made stick people, played in the mud kitchen and the ‘muddy stream’ and went hunting in the woods for snails and insects. The forest school allows the children to interact with the outside environment and learn about the world around us. The end of term was marked with a party for the children and their families, and a ‘slip and slide’, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. This was a great end to a fantastic year! Please look out for exciting fundraising activities in the new school year. On the 24th and 25th of August we will be running the tearoom at the MBC Arts Festival at Newton Dee, where we will be selling delicious home baking to raise funds for the playgroup. Please come along and see us! About Milltimber Playgroup and Forest School: We operate from the Milltimber Community Association Hall. In addition to our weekday morning sessions, we also offer an optional lunch club and a wraparound service which transports children to Milltimber School Nursery’s afternoon session if required, providing seamless childcare from 0915 to 1535, Monday to Friday. We also offer the wraparound transportation service from Milltimber school morning nursery and lunch club for our Friday afternoon Forest School session, which means childcare from 0830 to 1440. Due to the success of the wraparound service, in the new term we are planning to offer two additional afternoon sessions on a Tuesday and Thursday. If you are interested, please contact our Playgroup Manager Julie McWilliam on 07740 575273 or email milltimberplaygroup@ hotmail.co.uk to find out more, or to arrange to visit and meet the staff; we look forward to welcoming you.

Milltimber Scout Group News The Milltimber Scout Group had a great summer with all sections enjoying fun outdoors and making good use of the Templars’ Park campsite. Eleven of our beaver scouts attended the District Fun Day in May and had an excellent weekend at their Lego-themed sleepover in June. They also enjoyed an evening of games and challenges with our cub scouts, finishing up with badge presentations and moving on ceremonies. Our cub scouts took to the water with ‘Splash!’ sailing sessions on Loch of Skene and four of them took part in the District Swimming Gala, all gaining medals. Most of the cubs took part in our cub camp in June and enjoyed a weekend of fun activities. Scouts took part in an evening hike up Mither Tap on the longest day of the year and many joined in the Grampian Nights’ camp at Templars’ Park in August where they took part in challenges and activities with scouts from other troops. A group of our older scouts also took part in a lightweight practice camp in preparation for a hike/camp expedition later in the summer. Many thanks to our leaders, young leaders, adult helpers and the Executive Committee who work hard to provide a great programme of activities for our youth members. modern world. We do, however, need to provide the opportunity and motivation for the younger generation to try their hand at piping and drumming and allow them to develop their talent. Recognising a need to build and nurture individual talents, Granite City Pipes and Drums was formed in October 2014 with the aim of promoting and developing the playing of highland bagpipes and pipe band drumming in and around Aberdeen.

Granite City Pipes and Drums: A youth Pipe Band based in Cults In the North East corner of Scotland, we’ve always had a deep-rooted and strong tradition of quality pipe bands. Even with the advent of the internet, the ever-present soak on time, piping and drumming has continued to flourish providing a refreshing antidote to the

Granite City Pipes and Drums holds practice evenings every Monday at 7pm in Cults Academy. We are always looking for new members of any level, from raw beginners to experienced players who need the discipline of a regular practice evening to keep their skills fresh. We have several experienced volunteer piping and drumming tutors, all of whom are members of the pipe band community with many years of competitive experience. While practices have to be fun, we do try to challenge members to increase their repertoire and continually improve their musical technique.

Scottish Fiddle Orchestra when they come to Aberdeen. We can also be found performing at galas and on the odd occasion for the National Trust at Crathes Castle. It’s all great experience for our members to play in front of an appreciative audience. We encourage the band to compete and Granite City is currently at Grade 4b level. Competitions help hone the band’s technique and are a key element in maintaining a high playing standard. At a local level, the band achieved a second place at Banchory Pipe Band Contest while, on the national stage, the band was placed 6th in Grade 4b at the British Pipe Band Championships in Paisley. Granite City Pipes and Drums aspires to develop players to their full potential. We have strong links with our sister band, Highland Granite,

which ranks amongst the best bands in our region. Granite City members are encouraged to develop their skills to the point where they can make the step up to Highland Granite, a grade 2 band. Many of the band’s tutors are Highland Granite members who set clear realistic goals to encourage learners to rise through to the ranks of one of the North East’s senior performing bands. This keeps it fresh, exciting and challenging for the North East’s next generation of pipers and drummers. Granite City Pipes & Drums is a Scottish Registered charity for the advancement of education and the advancement of the arts, heritage & culture. For more information on joining the band, please contact Heather Dallas on: 07794 786546 or email: info@ granitecitypipesanddrums.com

We enjoy performing at local events and make regular appearances providing backing music for the

The Mixing Bowl Aberdeen April was a busy month with a Wild Food Foraging Adventure with Leanne Townsend from Wild Food Stories and also our festival fundraiser quiz. A keen bunch of foragers met in Seaton Park for a guided ‘taste and wander’. We nibbled our way along and discovered magnolia petals that had a gingery taste, sweet cicely that is great cooked with rhubarb and tastes of aniseed, as well as hogweed tips that are excellent deep fried in tempura batter and so much more. It was a really fascinating morning and walking along the railway line has never been quite the same since. We are surrounded by food! The fundraiser quiz took place at St Devenick’s Church hall with Sonya Angus at the helm as a wonderful Quiz Mistress. It was a really fun evening with Oor Wullie’s fish and chips delivered at half time to keep the energy levels up. Congratulations to ‘First Plaice’ who won best team name and to ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ who were the brain boxes of the night and won the quiz overall. Thank you to everyone who helped organise it and to all those that came along to support the Deeside Local Food Festival for which we raised over £600. In June we celebrated five years of the Mixing Bowl with the long-promised repeat of the fish workshop that first ran back in February. Once again Alan, Lynn and Jeff Mutch fed us delicious, freshly cooked langoustine and scallops while we learnt how to make Cullen Skink and Monkfish Provençal. The seafood was kindly donated by: J Smith, Sandend, Sea Lady TN20, Fraserburgh Trawlers, Macduff Seafoods and Fraserburgh Inshore Fisherman. Goodie bags were generously donated by Seafood Scotland. As the event coincided with, what turned out to be five birthdays of committee members and cooks, it was the ideal time to celebrate with a cake … a fishcake! Whether you are a keen cook, complete amateur or are just looking for a fun evening out we look forward to seeing you at the Mixing Bowl when it returns in the autumn. Please check the website for further details of our forthcoming cooking workshops: www. mixingbowlaberdeen.co.uk In the meantime, we are looking forward to welcoming you to the Deeside Local Food Festival at Cults Academy on Sunday September 15th from 11am to 4pm. This is the biggest festival yet with 70 food and drink, market and street food stalls. There will be workshops, talks, chef demonstrations, live music and lots of fun activities for the children too, so spread the word and come hungry! www. deesidefoodfestival.co.uk

Rotary Club of Aberdeen Deeside Pop-up Charity Shop in George Street, 28th April – 4th May The shop in George Street is owned by Aberdeen City Council but is let out to various organisations to raise funds for their charities. RCAD Members manned the shop from 28th April to 4th May having lots of fun whilst doing so. Over £2,000 was raised from selling clothing and other items donated by RCAD members and friends. Many items not sold during the period were donated to eleven nearby charities, namely CHSS, Santa’s Mission, Sue Ryder, CLAN, Men’s Shed, Archway, Tor-na-dee, Homestart, Smalls4All, VSA and Shelter. Art Evening, Marcliffe at Pitfodels Sunday, 26th May This year’s event, ‘Bold and Beautiful’, featured Flowers in Watercolour by artist Susie Hunt, founder of the North East Open Studios (NEOS) and making her debut at the Art Evening. Susie is a painter and painting tutor working with predominantly water-based media. The Charity Art Event has been running for over 16 years, based at The Marcliffe Hotel & Spa, thanks to the continued and kind generosity of Mr. Stewart Spence. During the evening Susie entertained and engaged with the audience, welcoming questions as she developed two paintings which were projected continuously onto a very large back-projection display screen using a high-quality colour CCTV system for all to see. These were auctioned at the end of the evening with all proceeds going to charity. Further examples of Susie’s work were also on sale in the ‘gallery’. 240 tickets were sold and including the proceeds from two raffles close to £5,000 was raised. This will be divided between SensationALL, the MS Society and Rotary Charities. Partners Night 29th May 2019 Members and partners met at the Harbour Board Visitor Centre on Greyhope Rd. Torry where our host and speaker was Javier Baron, Community Officer from the main contracting company Dragados. The display within the Centre uses video, pictures, quizzes, and floor pictures to show the public details of what will be an exciting new venture in the city. Cruise holidays from Aberdeen will start in mid 2020. After the presentation the company adjourned to the Sand Dollar Restaurant for an excellent supper of either fish pie or chicken curry. Kids Out, Craibstone, 12th June Kids Out is an annual oneday event for special needs primary school children. RCAD members are on the organizing committee for this event and many more attended to help out on the day. Although the weather was not good all the kids appeared to enjoy the various experiences available. Ongoing Residents will be aware that statues have appeared at various locations around Aberdeen as part of the ‘Oor Wullie’s Big Bucket Trail’ to raise awareness for children’s hospital charities. RCAD along with other local Rotary Clubs have sponsored the statue placed at the fountain at Duthie Park. We are always open for new members who will be made most welcome if they wish to attend a meeting. My UK ‘Big 3’ UltraRunning Route for Charity

very unsafe conditions in places due to steep scrambling sections on wet rock and poor visibility. I reached Llyn Ogwen and deliberated stopping there, but tenaciousness (or madness) had taken over and I decided to continue. I had five mountains to go, but the lactic acid in my legs had set in and running was difficult, supplemented by two

MBC readers may recall two previous articles I had published. One from four years ago, when I completed the 66 mile, 42 summit Bob Graham Round in the Lake District and two years ago when I completed the 58 mile, 23 Munro Ramsay Round in Lochaber. There was another Round that was playing on my mind; the 66 mile, 47 summit Paddy Buckley Round in Snowdonia. I had a break from ultra running for a year after the Ramsay Round, but decided I needed to try for the hat-trick, also known as the UK Big Three. The training is a huge commitment, spending up to 20 hours a week running up and down hills, plus swimming, strength & conditioning in the gym and, if possible, some yoga. To make it worthwhile, I decided to support two local charities: Newton Dee, which most MBC readers will know provides an amazing way of life to adults with learning disabilities; and Denis Law’s Streetsport, a charity I volunteer with, working with children in areas of high youth annoyance and offering a wide range of sports and creative activity. The training started last November and was tough. I faced challenges with various injuries and medical issues, but by mid-May my main training was finished and I was tapering down for the Round itself. I had managed a number of recce’s in Snowdonia over the last two years, so I was fairly familiar with the route. That was critical, as I would be doing the Round solo and unsupported and safety is of paramount importance! It was frustrating waiting for a half reasonable weather window, but one came mid-June and I headed down to Wales. On Saturday 15th June, at around 10.30am, I set off from Capel Curig. All was going relatively well time wise until I reached Llanberis at around the 16 hour mark. I had been feeling ill for a while and was finding it difficult to eat. This was further compounded by poor weather, high winds, sub-zero wind chill, cloud and rain. The section of the Round from Llanberis to Llyn Ogwen was difficult to say the least and there were

extremely painful blisters on the soles of my feet. Wind speeds had built up to what felt like 70 mph+ and I regretted not wearing running tights! I eventually made it back to Capel Curig after 27 hours and 33 minutes and was very thankful that the ordeal was over!!! Knowing I was being supported by so many wonderful donors for the two charities, made the pain I faced in the last ten hours of the Round worthwhile. My fundraising page is still open at https:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/DaveThompsonPBR and it would be fantastic if you would consider donating to these two incredible charities! So, what next? Why the Mark Rigby Round in the Cairngorms of course, 18 Munros and 72 miles. Can’t wait! Dave Thompson

GUIDES, BROWNIES and RAINBOWS

We are very lucky to have active Rainbow, Brownie and Guide Units in the Milltimber and Cults area. This is due to the hard work and dedication of all the Leaders. Previously as an Organisation we could give you a list of all the Units in the area, the name and contact details of the Leaders and as an interested parent you could contact the Leaders directly, but now due to our Nationwide “Safe from Harm” Policy we can no longer publish this information. We now have a Website that you can visit and register an interest for the age group you want a place in for your daughter. It is a simple procedure and once you have registered, a Guider should be in touch within 3 weeks to say if there are places available or if your daughter will be placed on the waiting list. You will be asked to put in your Postcode, the type of Unit you are interested in and if there are more than 1 suitable Unit you will be asked to put your 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice. Rainbows are for girls aged 5 - 7yrs Brownies are for girls aged 7 - 10yrs Guides are for girls aged 10 yrs plus The web address is www.girlguiding. org.uk/interested or you can call 0800 1 69 59 01

Dad? Yes, son? Been thinking. You know how we have an electric car? Yes, son. Why do none of my friends have an electric car? Well, we’ve tended to... well... look ahead... Ok, like how you and mum invested in bitcoins 10 years ago? And we have a Sodastream... And you knew to buy that Banksy... before anyone knew who Banksy was? Hehehehe... nobody knows who Banksy is... So... Dad? Yes, son? Is that why we moved to a Kirkwood home at Countesswells?
