Smiles all round… I’ve lost count of the number of articles in this issue which begin by mentioning the glorious sunshine we have had. So, I had to jump on the bandwagon and start that way too. The exceptional sunny weather changes the mood of our area: it brings people outdoors, making the streets and parks busier; local clubs see their members enjoying their sport to the full; the familiar aroma of British summer cooking, the barbeque, fills the evening air; and the beautiful hanging baskets in North Deeside Road add more than a splash of colour as the warm sunshine has already brought them into full bloom. One familiar visitor has been slightly harder to spot recently though; Pez Volando, our Tuesday fish van has moved to another location. If you don’t know already, Jill can now be found in Dunmail carpark. The festival team have once again been very busy putting together a programme with yet more new events. This year the opening ceremony will be open to all of the community. See inside this issue for details of this and all the Festival events. We are fortunate to have so many regular contributors to MBC News, including the many clubs and organisations, keeping us up-to-date with all that is going on locally. However, as you will know we often receive articles from members of the community about local history or landmarks.. This issue we have one of each. You can read about the Deeside Hydropathic, written by Freia Henery and we also have a feature on Inchgarth Reservoir. Something for everyone! So, if the sun is still shining, pour yourself something cold, kick off your shoes, find a seat in the sun and enjoy this issue of MBC News.

CULTS BIELDSIDE AND MILLTIMBER COMMUNITY COUNCIL News from the Community Council A season with splendid summer weather is slowly coming to an end. Splendid for sun-lovers, golfers, walkers etc; maybe less so for farmers and gardeners. Many thanks go to Graham Payne, CBMCC’s ‘chief gardener’ and his volunteers team for looking after our thirsty flowers in the street planters. Less enthusiastic about the long dry spell were also residents suffering from dust arising from the some of the building works in the area. Daily spraying of the sites by the builders cannot fully prevent this if the sun belts down from a blue sky for more than twelve hours. One cannot ever win when playing against the weather. The fine weather also brought many people out onto the Deeside Way, resulting in reports about (near) accidents and nuisance due to insensitive users of the path. As the cases appear to become more serious, despite regular calls for tolerance and care in this magazine and elsewhere, safety may become an issue and something more fundamental may have to be done. The community council will be working with interested residents and the City Council to consider what should be the best way forward to maintain the path as a useful and enjoyable, but above all, safe facility for all. It should be noted that in my view the UK Highway Code is applicable to the Deeside Way. All positive ideas and suggestions are welcome. Speaking about paths, a group of volunteers organised by our Footpath Group has been toiling away on the Cults Den path in an attempt to improve drainage and free passage. Many thanks on behalf of the community. It is festival time again and you are all encouraged to enjoy the many events of the MBC festival, starting late August, and the Deeside Local Food Festival on Sunday 16 September. These festivals – although supported by the community council - are organised by independent groups who do a grand job providing us with excellent and diverse summer entertainment. Please scan the programme and block the dates to make sure you can be there! I mentioned it already in the last MBC News issue: Community Council election time has come! The formal notice will be published on 29 August, after which one has one month to apply to be a candidate. The application process has been simplified so if you are interested in what happens in your local community and want to make a difference, there is no excuse! Being on the community council is a very flexible way to volunteer as it opens up a whole array of volunteering options, some of which you may not even be aware of. We are looking for people who are prepared to put in a bit of their time, of course, but the community is grateful for any effort, however limited. And, as current community councillors know, despite being involved in the serious business of protecting and improving our quality of life, we aim to maintain a good team ambiance all the time. Please contact me or any of the current community councillors to get more information. Guus Glass

Cults, Bieldside and Milltimber Community Council Election Community Councils are established by Local Authorities as set out in the Scheme for the Establishment of Community Councils. Community Councillors are all volunteers who have an interest in their local area and who have been elected by their local communities. Becoming a Community Councillor in Aberdeen gives you the opportunity to play a vital role in decision making. The Elections for all Community Councils will be held on 25 October 2018, which means there has never been a better time to get involved. You don’t need any special skills or experience, anyone who lives within the community council area and who is on the electoral roll can get involved.

CULTS BIELDSIDE AND MILLTIMBER COMMUNITY COUNCIL Planning Matters! At the time of writing, the beautiful games of football and tennis are under way so little time is available for philosophy. However, others have had some thoughts for you: “All that I know most surely about morality and obligations, I owe to football “ Albert Camus “In football everything is complicated by the presence of the opposite team” Jean-Paul Sartre “The unhappy individual is forever quite close to the goal and at the same moment some distance from it” Soren Kierkegaard “Have you noticed how we only win the World Cup under a Labour government” Harold Wilson The Community Council is still looking for comments and views on its Community Plan; we want to get as much input as possible, so we can shape how the community will look going forward. You can find the plan on the Community Council website: cbmcommunity.org.uk Now, an update on the major developments in our area: Contlaw Road – Stewart Milne Group have proposed the development of a site on Contlaw Road (OP112 in the Local Development Plan) and 36 homes were identified in the outline plans. Public exhibition was held on 14 May. Detailed plans are being prepared. Countesswells – The construction of Phase 1 development, around 1260 homes, is well under way with around 140 occupied so far. Kirkwood Homes have set up their sales centre for the part of the site they will develop, the southern section of Block C2. Barratts will take on the construction of 131 homes in Block N6. We welcome the new residents of Countesswells to our Community Council area.
Page 6
Culterhouse Road – Plans are being prepared for the development of a site on Culterhouse Road (OP113); the open land on the right as you turn the sharp bend near East Lodge and 11 detached homes are being proposed. A public exhibition was held on 15 May. Friarsfield – Work is well under way on Phase 2, which will be 109 houses and 12 apartments. The link road between Kirk Brae and Craigton Road is due by the time 160 houses (from Phase 1 & 2) are sold. CALA were given planning permission for an extra 19 homes at the eastern end of the Friarsfield site despite Aberdeen City Education Department being opposed to the application because Cults Primary school is full and it is difficult to get a place at Cults Academy. The Planning Department solution will be to bus children to another school! Stewart Milne Group is developing plans for the completion of Phase 3 at Friarsfield, for between 80 and 100 homes and should complete the overall development. Inchgarth Road Development – Plans for proposed development of open land between the North Deeside Rd and Inchgarth Rd to the west of Pitfodels Station Rd. are expected to be submitted in 3Q2018. We believe the development will be 95 retirement homes and apartments and a small commercial unit, possibly for a GP surgery or pharmacy. A large part of the overall site will be retained as green space for public use with good access to the Deeside Way. The development will incorporate a link road between the North Deeside Road and Inchgarth Road which is seen as a key piece of transport infrastructure for Aberdeen. McCarthy & Stone Development at 3 South Avenue, Cults – The planning application 160552 for 21x2-bedroom apartments on the site of the house at 3 South Avenue which was refused by ACC Planning was granted permission on appeal by the Scottish Reporter. The application is subject to a variation of the title condition which is currently being considered by the Lands Tribunal.
mbc NEWS Issue 180 Aug-Sept-Oct ‘18
Milltimber South – As of July the developer, Bancon, is still in discussions with both the Planner Officers and the landowners to finalise a masterplan that is suitable. Oldfold Farm – Work on Phase 1 for 61 homes continues and over 45 are now occupied. We welcome all the new residents to our area. Phase 2 for 166 homes has been approved. The new primary school is due to be available by the time 250 – 300 homes have been sold though pressure on places at Milltimber may lead to the City Council working with CALA to bring plans forward. Some nearby residents have suffered disturbance through noise and dust generated in ground works and we have raised these concerns with Aberdeen City Council and CALA. The response we received from the City Council is as follows; The guidelines for noisy construction work in Aberdeen City are Monday to Friday 0700 – 1900 hrs and Saturday 0800 – 1300 hrs. There should be no noisy works undertaken on a Sunday which is audible from outwith the site boundary. CALA appear to be adhering to these guideline hours. Aberdeen City Council has not specifically approved these hours of work for this particular site, as they apply city wide to all construction sites. CALA have agreed to move the crushing operation to the far side of the development when crushing the smaller rocks, however, this is not practical for the larger rocks and they need to be broken and crushed in situ. CALA have also been undertaking dust suppression methods to mitigate dust. When the crushing operations are taking place, a spray is used to dampen down the dust. A tractor and water bowser are being used to dampen down the haul roads on the site. It is impossible to mitigate all dust from a construction site and current dust levels are considered reasonable under the current circumstances. Noise measurements have also been taken at the site and are considered to be reasonable and within the acceptable standards as detailed in BS 5228-2:2009 Code of practice for noise and vibration control on
http://cbmcommunity.org.uk/mbc-news/
construction and open sites. The CALA Contracts Manager has confirmed that the noisy crushing operations will be completed by Friday 13th July. AWPR – Some statistics • road is 58 km long plus 40 km of side/access roads • 7 million tons of rock moved, more than all the granite extracted from Rubislaw Quarry • most of the earth and rock moved has been reused on site • 75 bridges constructed, 80 culverts, 300 km of drainage • tarmac surface is expected to last up to 10 years, dependent on traffic wear • 218 apprentices employed; 63 graduates; 225 job starts; 57 work experience places; 50 short term training posts The full opening is expected to be in the autumn after a full safety audit of the road has been completed. A section between Parkhill/Goval and Blackdog opened to traffic on 27 June. The team will continue to look at opportunities to open up other sections but, as of July, there are no other planned early openings. AWPR Project Status July 2018
Council will take place in October 2018 and nominations are requested in September.
h as been relatively good with a lost time injury frequency of 0.16. A community event to mark the completion of the road is planned for the weekend of 8/9 Sept and it will be held in the River Dee area of the road. The event is being managed by the team that organised the Queensferry Crossing opening event. It will be a ‘fete style’ event with attractions including a celebration of travel through the ages with vintage vehicles and future electric vehicle technology. There will also be unique opportunities for cyclists of a wide range of abilities to experience the road before strategic traffic begins using it in earnest. No details yet other than an opportunity to cycle on the AWPR on the Sunday. Details will be made available on the website www.awprgonortheast.co.uk City Centre Master Plan The Reference Group established to help provide input to proposals for City Centre Development meets quarterly and the last meeting was on 12 June 2018 with the next meeting scheduled for 2 October. The group is chaired by Marie Boulton and has representatives from various city groups including the Civic Forum and the Community Council Forum. Progress continues on the first phase of projects being pursued over the next three years – see separate article.
• Balmedie to Tipperty work is progressing well.
Strategic Plan and Local Development Plan
• The Craibstone to Stonehaven/Charleston section is almost complete.
Comments were submitted by the Community Council on the Aberdeen City and Shire Strategic Plan Main Issues Report and also on the matters that should be addressed in the Local Development Plan Main Issues Report. The LDP Main Issues Report should be published in January 2019. The comments we submitted can be found on the Community Council website.
•
The Stonehaven and Charleston junctions are almost finished. The team acknowledged that the temporary routing and signage at Stonehaven had caused some confusion. The traffic modelling work suggests the traffic signal controlled right turn after the roundabout on to the A90 should be adequate.
•
The Don bridge crossing still has a good amount of construction to be done; this should be the last major piece of construction work for the road.
• Street lighting will be installed at the junctions but not along the full stretch of the road. •
The barrier dividing the carriageways is concrete; there are sections which can be removed to allow lane crossover during maintenance works.
• Safety record during the road construction
Community Council Scheme of Establishment We are hoping that the revised Scheme of Establishment for Community Councils in Aberdeen will very soon be approved by the City Council. There are no major changes affecting us; just a small change around Pitfodels Station Road/ Inchgarth Road involving our area and Garthdee. Nine homes on the corner have been moved into our area with the agreement of the two Community Councils. One of the changes in the new scheme is a reduction of places on the Community Council from 18 to 16 and membership is open to those 16 years old and above. Elections for the Community
Road Works You can keep up to date on road works in our area through our Community Council facebook page at www.facebook.com/cbmcomcouncil/ and on our website at www.cbmcommunity.org.uk. You can also find road work updates at www.tellmescotland. gov.uk/notices/aberdeen-city/ and through www. aberdeencity.gov.uk/transport_streets/roads_ pavements/roads_and_pavements.asp Planning Applications of Note 170028 Land at Bieldside Lodge: The Planning Development Committee refused the application to approve the method of construction for a house close to the Deeside Way, which would have required use of the Deeside Way, because of concerns over the protection of trees and the listed wall on the site. An appeal against the decision is in progress. You can see a current list of applications on our website. The Community Council would like residents to know they can approach us, either at one of our monthly meetings or outside of a meeting, to discuss concerns or support for a planning application being made in our area. We listen to all views and the more we hear, the better we are able to fairly represent the community of Cults, Bieldside and Milltimber. Please don’t hesitate to contact the Community Council if you have any questions or concerns about a planning application and would like to place a topic on our meeting agenda. …and the numbers The number of planning applications in Cults, Bieldside and Milltimber in 2018 so far has been 65, with 36 in the second quarter. We submitted five letters of comment or objection in 1Q2018 and none in the second quarter. Peter Roberts

CULTS BIELDSIDE AND MILLTIMBER COMMUNITY COUNCIL City Centre Masterplan - June 2018 Current Work Programme – headline statements are;
mgCalendarMonthView).
Marischal Square project is complete with some snagging work still to be done. More tenants will be moving into the premises over the next few months and there is more interest in the remaining space.
The Strategy recommendations fall into four topics of: 1. Form a dedicated city living team. 2. Take a lead role in the delivery of transformational projects.
Broad Street – the paving work should be finished by the end of July with the street opened at the beginning of August. The contractor is currently putting in fountain heads near the statue of Robert Bruce and the four sculptures created by students at North East College should also be installed in July. A new lighting strategy is being created for Marischal College.
3. Identify and support quick wins.
Greyfriars Church redevelopment – the planning application has been approved and listed building consent to clean the stone of the tower has been granted. The owners are waiting for the right opportunity to begin work.
Union Terrace Gardens – a public market testing event for potential contractors is planned
Provost Skene House – the project has been refocused with a new budget and work programme. A listed building application has been submitted. Aberdeen 365 – the city has just hosted the Cycle tour races. The next major event will be the Great Aberdeen Run, a half marathon and 10k race, to be held on Sunday 26 August. The recent Nuart (street art) festival was very successful, attracting a lot of public interest and another two years have been contracted. North Dee Business Quarter – effort on this is on hold for the moment; some parcels of land in the area have recently changed ownership. Union Street improvements – the first application under the Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS) from a private landlord has been received. Work is also being done under Heritage Trust funding. Union Square – the Section 75 agreement discussions associated with the approval of the planning permission are progressing Queens Square – a draft plan from the consultants on a development framework is being developed. Discussions are being held with the various property owners which include public sector and private landlords so it is not possible to release details to the public yet. It will be a residential led development and the request for some public space to be part of the redevelopment. City Centre Living Study – the findings of this study were presented to the City Growth and Resources Committee on 19 June - the report can be found on the Council Calendar of Meetings (www.committees.aberdeencity.gov.uk/
4. Introduce a moratorium on developer obligations for residential development of less than 50 units in the City centre. Golden Square – plans are on hold until the completion of the City Parking Study and agreement on way forward
Aberdeen In Colour – the first phase of the project which will be in Langstane Place has been approved Music Hall – work is being done by Aberdeen Performing Arts and it is expected it will re-open at the end of 2018 Art Gallery – there are issues being negotiated with the contractor so not possible to discuss the details. The initially contracted works should be completed in July but more work will likely take the opening into 2019. Station gateway - not much movement on this. The BT building is being marketed for sale. There are numerous property owners in and around the station gateway area and the council is working to pull them together to bring forward a new gateway for Aberdeen. The Car Parking Study is still to be finalised and it is hoped it will be addressed at the next meeting. There are two aspects to the study; a review of the capital assets i.e. the car parks, and general parking arrangements for travellers to the city. The officer said it was important to consider all aspects are understood, including the costs and levels of investment needed. Communication and Engagement A programme has been developed to keep the media informed on the key projects, and hopefully this will ensure the wider public are kept informed. The team have been holding briefings with city bus drivers on driving in a shared space for when Broad Street is opened again. The team is working with City Voice to develop approaches for engaging the

younger adults within the city. There will also be presentations at university fresher fairs. The University of Florida have been doing some research on how to improve the city and this work will be used to develop ideas. A conference was held on the ‘Night-time Economy’ – there was good participation from business owners and public services. It was noted that Aberdeen is a safe city to be in, with Purple Flag accreditation. Developing a new city narrative, something that will energise people and get them to speak positively about how Aberdeen is changing and changing for the better – a small team has been developing a suitable narrative and this is close to being ready for publication. A diagram of the Interim Function Structure for Aberdeen City Council was presented. The appointed Directors are: Commissioning – Frank McGee; Customer – Andy McDonald; Operations – Rob Polkinghorn; Resources – Stephen White Other points raised Will the design brief for Queens Square incorporate a public space element? Some people thought that was promised when the Broad St./Muse development took away the opportunity at that location. Even if it wasn’t promised, it might be worthwhile looking at what could be done in the space. We have received a report which gives options on how we can redevelop Queens Square, an option would see the Town House demolished and left as an open space where events could take place including food markets etc. We are still in discussions with other interested parties who own properties on Queen Street who we have yet to get agreements with so we aren’t in a position to go public with anything as yet. Whatever option we go with there will have to be redevelopment of a large part of the area. The Council will be happy to provide more details following the completion of discussions with other parties.
mbc NEWS Issue 180 Aug-Sept-Oct ‘18
A point about the City Centre Masterplan taking into account accessibility to public transport when planning changes to traffic/bus movement in the city as more areas are pedestrianised. Some people are concerned about the elderly and disabled not being able to walk long distances to reach a bus stop. The public transport/roads team have been asked to look at this point and to come back. We share the concerns and do worry that we are looking at things from an average person rather than the more vulnerable in terms of being able to move about the City Centre due to age or disability. Requests for outside seating permits. This is a Licensing matter but it appears that supporting arguments for approval are claiming that such requests are in line with the City Centre Masterplan and so should be supported. In principle no problems but some recent cases have led to a narrowing of space for walking and pushchair/wheelchair accessibility. The issue has been raised with planning and asked that they ensure the disability equity partnership is always consulted on this type of application. Cyclists using pavements rather than riding on the road. It appears that this is a growing concern and public safety is felt to be at risk. There was some confusion as to whether cycling on pavements is legal or not (allowed on pavements above a certain width?). Again not strictly a Masterplan matter but something ACC should be aware of and look at, to see how use of cycles can be made safer both for pedestrians and cyclists. Discussions with the Police have confirmed that riding a bicycle on the pavement is illegal and subject to a spot fine; discretion is used to allow children to ride bicycles on the pavement for safety reasons. Does the scheme for Union St bridge safety barriers incorporate any aspects of the Kelly Cat design? The design incorporates the existing features which includes the Kelly Cats. The next meeting of the Reference Group will be on Tuesday 2 October. Peter Roberts

News from Councillors
News from your MP, Ross Thomson
We have all just enjoyed the warmest June since 1976, which followed the warmest May since records began; all closely following on the heels of ‘new records set as ferocious cold and snow batter the northern hemisphere’! Whilst weather patterns do change the amount of CO2 being produced annually, an accepted ‘green house’ gas, must be reduced. The UK alone produces over 220 million tonnes of CO2 annually. The forthcoming opening of the completed AWPR will allow a roads’ hierarchy and low emission zones (LEZs) to be implemented and will allow Aberdeen City to play its part in this process. The warm weather has unsurprisingly increased water demand. This presents challenges in terms of treating huge amounts of water to the quality that we all take for granted. And as a direct consequence of more water passing through the water supply network you will probably have noticed a reduction in the pressure at your tap. If you notice any leaks, please do report them on the new look council website. CALA are reconfiguring land at their Friarsfield site in Cults and Oldfold Farm site in Milltimber. This work has caused great inconvenience for those living in the area, both in terms of extended periods of noise for rock crushing and the relentless cloud of dust. Council officers recently visited the Friarsfield site on five consecutive occasions and determined that no breach of legislation had taken place. And because it is not an issue related to site work safety, health and safety executive personnel do not have a part to play in the monitoring process. During this period of unprecedented warm weather, CALA have told your councillors that they have now implemented a regime in which a tractor-pulled water bowser will damp down the dust twice a day on all of their sites. CALA have also said that they will have the land reconfiguration work completed as rapidly as possible. The new Skatepark located beside Cults primary school was completed at the end of May and has been proving a great success with those using it. Some felt that the £51,000 installation would not be complete without being daubed in graffiti, which was a little unfortunate. Alternative decoration is currently being investigated. Roads are slowly being re-surfaced across this ward. Hillview Crescent in Cults is due to be resurfaced between its junctions with Quarry Road and Cults Avenue at the end of July. A temporary prohibition of driving between 7.30am on 30 July to 5pm on 3 August will be necessary. There will also be a daily prohibition of waiting on the same stretch of road between 7.30am to 5pm. In addition, the junction of Malcolm Road with North Deeside Road is due to be resurfaced between 6 and 10 August. And finally, Contlaw Road, south of west lodge to north of No.108 is due to be resurfaced between 3 and 7 September. The traffic lights at the junction of Ballieswells Road with North Deeside Road are timed to give A93 traffic priority. In an attempt to dodge the traffic lights at this junction motorists have been driving at high speed along Gowanbrae and Prospecthill Road. The police have been closely monitoring the situation for some time now. In order to get a better picture of this behaviour, speed/volume radars were installed on Gowanbrae and Prospecthill Road between 2 and 9 July that should provide hard evidence to match with local observations and from which a plan of action can be formulated. There will also be a survey programmed for the spring of 2019, which represents a six-month period following the autumn opening of the AWPR. This will allow a suitable period for new traffic patterns to develop and for traffic distribution to settle. On a lighter note many of you have commented about the fish van in Cults no longer being parked in its normal location. This is entirely due to the associated street trader’s license expiring in July 2016, which has never been renewed. And finally, when you contact your councillors with local issues it is our intention to reply to you quickly and then alert the relevant council officer and ensure a satisfactory follow-up. Please do be mindful of the fact that some legislation has the effect of tying your councillors hands. Please do continue to contact us with any council related issues that you feel we can help with. We look forward to meeting you at our surgeries. Cncllr Philip Bell, Conservative, Cncllr Marie Boulton, Independent, Cncllr M. It will be of no surprise to local residents that I have been supporting a number of constituents who are being impacted by the construction of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route. I know how exasperated local people are with the construction issues and they simply want the road up and running so that they can breathe a sigh of relief and get their lives back to some form of normality. I’ve been helping constituents with a number of problems: dust blowing around from the construction work; ongoing issues associated with noise; construction vehicle, and the impact that all of this is having on their quality of life. It is hugely frustrating for residents that the project has now overrun by some time. We’re now being told autumn 2018 which has slipped some way from the spring completion date originally promised. If you have suffered from AWPR construction issues, then please get in touch via ross. thomson.mp@parliament.uk or attend one of my surgeries. I’ve been very busy at Westminster representing my constituents on a range of issues, asking questions of Ministers and taking part in debates. I have put forward my first bill to the UK Parliament on Pet Theft. Pets are part of the family. For anyone unfortunate enough to have experienced pet theft, it can be truly heart-breaking, distressing and devastating. The theft of a pet should be recognised as a criminal offence. Previously, I worked on a ban on electric shock dog collars and have met with Michael Gove, the Secretary of State for DEFRA, to make sure such a ban will include invisible containment fencing. Whether it’s physical harm or taking a pet from its beloved family cruelty to animals is cruelty, full stop. I was honoured to take part in commemoration of Armed Forces Day and have long been an advocate of our men and women at home and abroad, who do so much to defend our peaceful way of life. Britons are privileged to have such committed, well-equipped Armed Forces, often recruited from historic regimental heartlands across Scotland. They have sworn to protect us in difficult times internationally. It is my duty, in turn, to help protect them by fighting to preserve the UK’s status as one of NATO’s best-funding member nations by GDP. I was pleased to make this point clear to the Defence Secretary in the recent debate on NATO. As always if I can be of any help to you and your neighbours please don’t hesitate to get in touch. The Deeside Hydropathic Gordon Cantlay, a long-standing MBC News advertiser with Traditional Window Cleaners, recently found a fragment of a porcelain plate while working at Murtle Den Road. The pottery piece originated from the former Deeside Hydropathic which lay between Binghill Road and Murtle Den Road. The Deeside Hydro was first opened at Heathcote in Kincardineshire in the autumn of 1874 by Bailie Adam Mitchell and Dr. David Johnston. Hydropathy, as a medical treatment for a wide range of conditions, originated in the 1830s in Austria. It was based on a series of water treatments; showers, baths and rubbing or massage, drawn together in a supervised and individually tailored regime that emphasized exercise, good diet and no alcohol. In April 1877, the Deeside Hydro was taken over by the Reverend Dr. Alexander Stewart. In November 1899, Dr. Stewart oversaw the building of a purpose-built house at a new site which lay just eight minutes’ walk from Murtle Station on the Deeside Railway. Close to an artesian well, there was an abundant supply of pure water and it was a convenient locale for visiting the picturesque Royal Deeside area. The extensive grounds included a croquet lawn, a bowling green and tennis courts, while the Deeside Golf Club was only a mile away. The building itself had 92 bedrooms and there were Turkish, Russian, vapour, spray and electric baths occupying a special annexe with experienced attendants and masseurs. Dr Stewart was born in 1835 in Coupar Angus, studied at Glasgow University and did a medical course at Aberdeen University. At the time of his death in 1909, he had over 30 years’ experience in hydropathy and was Minister of the John Street Congregational Church in Aberdeen, having been ordained there in 1864. After the First World War, the Deeside Hydropathic building was sold and converted into the Tor-Na-Dee Sanatorium, specialising in the treatment of tuberculosis and became better known as TorNa-Dee Care Home. The site has now changed beyond recognition and is being developed for housing. The photographs show the fragment of plate found by Gordon Cantlay and the Deeside Hydro (Courtesy of Aberdeen City Libraries).

Japan Day Aberdeen 2018 9th September, Cults Academy, 10am to 5.30pm
The voluntary Japan Day Aberdeen Organisation (JDAO) will stage its 14th Japan Day on September 9th at Cults Academy, celebrating the historical and present-day relationship between the Northeast of Scotland and Japan. The highlights this year will be the involvement of Scottish and Japanese businesses, local and further afield, coming together alongside food stalls serving Japanese and Scottish food, a wide variety of activities, interactive presentations, speeches and performances. Entry to the family friendly event is free. Organisers of this annual celebration of the culture and heritage of Japan and its historic ties with the North East of Scotland expect this year’s event to be the biggest yet. More than 2,100 people attended Japan Day Aberdeen 2017, more than double the turnout from the previous year, continuing a trend of growing participation since the inception of the event 13 years ago. Japan Day Aberdeen began in humble fashion but has grown year on year into a key cultural event in the local calendar. Dignitaries attending this year will be the Lord Provost of Aberdeen, the Consul General of Japan in Edinburgh and Lewis Macdonald MSP. The many traditional and modern Japanese cultural activities will include Taiko drumming, calligraphy, a cosplay competition, origami, martial arts demonstrations and many more – in what is sure to be a fun day for all ages. There will also be a presentation on the ‘Scottish Samurai’, Thomas Blake Glover, born in Fraserburgh, who went on to become a key figure in the industrialisation of Japan, establishing a shipbuilding company that became the Mitsubishi Corporation. Chief Organiser of Japan Day Aberdeen 2018, Preston Gan said: “Our vision is simple: we want to inspire communities across the Northeast of Scotland and further afield to develop an appreciation and understanding of Japanese culture, heritage and the historical relationship between Scotland and Japan. “A key part of our event this year is to have wider engagements with our local communities to take part in Japan Day’s activities. “My hope is to win the hearts and minds of visitors attending the event so that they will go away feeling inspired and encouraged about our northeast heritage and its contributions to Japan.” Lewis Macdonald MSP said: “I am delighted to show my support for Japan Day Aberdeen. It is a fantastic celebration of the diversity and international outlook of Aberdeen and the North East. The event also offers the chance to build on existing links between Japan and the North East, as well as creating opportunities to develop new partnerships.” You can also get involved as there are many different volunteering opportunities, either in preparation for the event or being a helper on the day. By becoming a volunteer at Japan Day, you will have a unique opportunity to learn new skills, make new friends and develop an understanding of Japanese culture, heritage and the historical relationship between Scotland and Japan. Those interested can contact organisers via email at jdayaberdeen@gmail.com for more details. Coordination for Living Movement scientists refer to body coordination as motor coordination; a term that describes the interactions between our muscular, skeletal and nervous systems. Clear communication between these systems creates coordinated movements. Body coordination is a performance-related fitness component that describes the smooth, efficient movement patterns that are parts of sport skills and daily tasks. The stage of learning influences how well we can perform the component movements of a skill. Coordination is something we learn as children; as young as two years of age. If we are involved in sport as children, we tend to learn coordination quicker and it stays with us. Coordination is a skill and therefore is certainly something we CAN learn and improve upon. Over this next block of eight weeks at our unique Strength & Balance community classes, Laura will be focusing on ways in which coordination is beneficial to us and how it can be improved through fitness for daily living. We will also discover how it impacts us as we age. So, to measure coordination we observe gait. Walking is a prime example of a coordinated daily movement. Observing gait shows how well the muscular-skeletal system is operating. Our posture when we walk demonstrates if it is efficient and smooth movement. What do we look for? Where is our gaze when we are walking? Does our spine have its natural shape? Do we place our heel on the floor first when walking? Movement which is not smooth and efficient will cause some discomfort. To make movement smooth and efficient from a muscular skeletal perspective, posture has to be addressed. However, injury, disease, alcohol, drugs and faulty postural alignment might cause communication roadblocks, which interfere with our body’s ability to coordinate our movements. (Live strong) So, how do we know if posture is causing the lack of coordinated movement and is therefore inefficient? We change our posture so we feel stronger and move easier. At Strength & Balance we slow the movement down in class, lift our gaze whilst exercising, brace into the belly muscles to support our movements and encourage ourselves to lead with the heel when walking. Small alterations to the way we move can pay enormous dividends in confidence in maintaining balance and coordination. Call Laura now and come along to your first class for FREE. M: 07773021851

Cults Primary PTA News Cults Primary PTA had their Summer Fair on June 9th which was a great success bringing in around £7,500 which will go towards the planned playground improvements. The weather was excellent for the kids to enjoy the outdoor games and inside we had a farewell Glee Club performance from the P7’s and the local Rock Choir performed too. The themed raffle hampers were spectacular, packed with great prizes and over £2,500 in gifts and vouchers from local businesses. Thanks to everyone who donated and came out to enjoy the afternoon and to all the wonderful volunteers. Leftover donations were picked up by local charity Home-Start so nothing went to waste. Lottery numbers are now on sale for the 2018/19 school year with the first of 10 draws to win up to £100 taking place at the end of September 2018. Get in touch to join the fun! Don’t forget to keep your new back-to-school uniforms and other items out of the ‘lost and found’ by getting some sticky labels from stickins.co.uk (use ID 5482) or mynametags.com (use ID 24137) while raising money for the school.
Cults Scouts 110 years old! 2019 will be a year to remember as the Cults Scout Group celebrates its 110th anniversary. An exciting range of activities is being planned – some new, some old, something for everyone. The aim is to have 110 personal challenges/activities, although completing all 110 of them might be quite a feat! In autumn this year, events will include: lightweight expeditions in the Lochgoilhead area for older Scouts; a residential week-end of water and land-based activities; and a training week-end for patrol leaders, assistants and potential assistants. A little extra adult help is needed to help facilitate and expand the events and activities in the lead up to and during the anniversary year, including supervising scouts and passing on a skill. The time commitment is flexible and it’s not necessary to be a uniformed leader – it’s optional. To find out more contact scoutleader@21staberdeenscouts.org.uk

CO-OP Funding Improves Art Display Camphill Wellbeing Trust’s exhibition space has received a makeover thanks to over £2500 raised by the Peterculter Co-op and its shoppers. CWT was chosen as one of three charities to receive funds raised from March to September 2017 through the Co-op Local Community Fund. Co-op Members were able to choose CWT as their cause to receive the Co-op’s donation of 1% on all sales of ownbrand products. Money from shopping bag sales bags plus 1% from members who had not actively selected a cause was also added, making a grand total of £2,597.81. The Co-op money was used to install new lighting in the Camphill Medical Practice waiting room and corridors to focus on the art displayed as part of CWT’s Art in the Waiting Room project. “The new spotlights have made a real difference,” shares Catherine Redgate, co-ordinator of the art programme. “Having a flexible system means we can adjust the lights to optimise the viewing experience at each exhibition.” Aileen Primrose, CWT Manager, explains, “The project promotes both local artists’ work and our charity whilst providing a rich visual environment for patients.” Camphill Wellbeing Trust is a local medical charity providing an integrative approach to health which aims to address illness, build resilience and maintain wellbeing. To support equality of access, CWT relies on the generous support of donors and fundraisers. CWT would like to thank everyone who supported the Co-op’s Community Fund during Summer 2017. You have helped support a project that benefits patients and the local community. We hope to see you at our next Art in the Waiting Room open night where you too can experience our brighter exhibitions!

News from St Devenick’s Playgroup What beautiful weather we had last term! Although we give opportunities for outdoor learning in all weathers, it was wonderful to have such a sunny and warm term. This impacted on the interests of the children and they spent much time outside playing with water – lots of pouring, making puddles and transporting water using piping and bottles. The children also spent a lot of time finding out about different garden bugs. A few children finding a worm in the garden led to them finding out about other bugs and asking and answering questions such as ‘How do worms move? How do spiders make webs?’ At the end of term, which is always so emotional, we had our usual concert and graduation. The children sang their hearts out to their parents and looked very cute! At the end they were all given a trophy and a certificate to celebrate their playgroup achievements. The work of the Committee was also acknowledged. Big thanks were given to Natalie Heneghan, Elizabeth Smith and Alina Couch who took on the Secretary, Treasurer and Rota Secretary roles. A special mention was given to our two wonderful chairpersons - Sarah Esson and Lisa Dalgarno. They gave the playgroup so much and helped to raise a lot of money. Thank you Lisa and Sarah – we will miss you! Now, after a nice long summer it is lovely to welcome back many of our children and to get to know all our new children. As a staff, our focus is very much on nurturing and building positive relationships with all the children. It is such a rewarding part of our job to see the children grow and develop. In addition to our playgroup we also run a Rising Fives group on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. This group is for any child in their pre-school year at nursery. The Rising Fives team provide a great couple of hours for the children, providing fun activities such as science experiments and food activities. It’s a great group to allow your child to meet up with their friends twice a week, release their energies with lots of fun and learn a few things along the way! If you would like more information on Rising Fives then please do contact us.

We also have a parent/ carer baby and toddler group, led by our lovely Alina. This is a way for parents and carers to meet on a Wednesday morning and have a chat while their children play. Everyone gets a snack and Alina is always there to welcome any new families with a cuppa! This year we are excited as we are getting ready for a very special birthday in 2019. The playgroup will be 50 years old! We will be marking this amazing achievement with an event and would love to have people attend from all of its fifty years – children, staff and Committees. We are currently researching the playgroup history and are looking for information. Did you work at the playgroup? Did you attend the playgroup as a child? Were you a parent of the group or on the Committee? The playgroup started in 1969. Were you one of the first children to attend? We would love to know when you were involved with the playgroup and your experiences. Perhaps you would even like to join our ‘50 Committee’ to help organise our birthday event which we know will be very special. Please contact us if you can help with our research or would like to be part of our celebrations. Thank you for reading! St Devenick’s Playgroup is based at St Devenick’s Church Hall on Baillieswells Road. The Playgroup runs Monday to Friday from 9.10am-12.20pm, with an optional Wednesday lunch club which extends the session until 1.30pm (at an extra cost). Rising Fives is on a Tuesday and Thursday, from 12.30 till 3pm. We also run a toddler group on a Wednesday morning from 9.30 till 11.30am called Tots and Toddlers in the church. If you would like further information about any of the above please visit our website stdevenicksplaygroup. btck.co.uk, contact the playgroup on 01224 867431 or email Anna Bonner, our playgroup administrator, via our playgroup stdevenicksplaygroup@gmail.com or find us on facebook www.facebook.com/stdevenicksplaygroup.

Do you have enough Zinc in your diet? Have you been following nutrition advice to cut down on red meat and eat more fruit and vegetables? Or are you vegetarian/ vegan and eat no meat at all? Zinc is an important micronutrient and is required for the proper structure and function of proteins in the body. A lack of zinc in the diet can have a negative effect on health, including suppressing the immune system, making you more susceptible to colds and infections. It has an effect on men’s health, in the production of healthy sperm and predisposing the prostate gland to infection. It also helps maintain the integrity of the skin so is used in the treatment of nappy rash, dry skin, acne etc. Zinc may also influence chronic diseases such as heart disease. Health experts advise eating less red meat and more fruit and veg, but most zinc in the diet comes from red meat so some groups of the population are at risk of zinc deficiency, especially vegans, vegetarians, low income families and the elderly. Scientists at the Rowett Institute in Aberdeen, in collaboration with the James Hutton Institute are trying out a new way to improve zinc nutrition without altering people’s eating habits by biofortifying potatoes with zinc, using normal farming methods. Potatoes are not only widely eaten throughout the world; being relatively cheap, they are accessible to most people, Therefore, they could be utilised by everyone including vegans and vegetarians to improve their zinc status. he Mixing Bowl is a community-led food interest group that is open to everyone and meets monthly for talks, tastings, demonstrations and workshops. The group also organises the Deeside Local Food Festival in Cults each September. Our April event felt like we had taken a trip to South America with Shirley Vass who taught us to make Arepa and various fillings to go inside. Shirley brought along Venezuelan decorations and music to set the scene as well as a lot of enthusiasm. It was a fun night and very tasty too. Jo McDonald from Jo’s Healthy Cupboard came along to our last event before the summer break and gave a talk and demonstrated how to make healthier cakes and desserts. Jo created some sweet potato brownies, protein balls, a healthier ‘Snickers bar’ and a raw cheesecake for us to try. They were delicious and were a great way to celebrate the Mixing Bowl’s fourth birthday. Shirley Butler also ran a quiz to warm everyone up for our annual quiz in the autumn. The proud winners won ‘smashing’ prizes … a box of Katy’s Eggs each! The next event, after the summer break, is the Deeside Local Food Festival that will take place at Cults Academy on Sunday 16th September from 11am to 4pm with a local produce market, street food for lunch, chef demonstrations, cooking workshops, talks, ‘meet the farmer’ experience, live music and children’s activities. Further details can be found at www.deesidefoodfestival.co.uk. It will be a fun day out for all the family and we look forward to seeing you there.

My name is Yvonne Spalding. Some of you may know me already from Cults Medical group as I have worked as Office Manager for a number of years and am now looking forward to beginning a new chapter as Practice Manager. We are very pleased to welcome Dr Mary Duffy to our team of dedicated experienced clinicians. Dr Duffy is a newly qualified GP and we are delighted she has decided to join us. Dr Georgina Rowan will be on maternity leave as of 3rd July. We wish her well and look forward to meeting her new arrival soon! The summer has brought with it the usual seasonal problems such as hayfever, insect bites and sunburn. Local pharmacies can provide a range of products to treat these problems and many people can obtain these free of charge through the Minor Ailments Scheme. When placing a request for medication please remember we have a dedicated 24-hour prescription ordering line 01224 860160. Also, you can register at Reception for ordering repeat medication online. The Reception team are always very busy on the telephone so when possible please try to utilise one of these options. Finally, I would like to congratulate our newly appointed Office Manager, Mrs Sharon King. Sharon is a hardworking, dedicated member of the Reception team and I am sure she will provide an excellent service to our patients. Thank you, Yvonne Spalding Practice Manager

The group is an important part of the local community and we always welcome new tots and adults. We have been working hard recently to raise funds and hope to have lots of fantastic new toys on offer soon. We are running over the summer holidays this year and older siblings are welcome. Come along and join us, we'd love to meet you! (£2.50 per child includes snack. 50p for each additional child).

What a wonderful term we had with some great events to support the young people at CSA. First, there was the wonderful Spring Fayre on the 12th of May. This was followed by the BP Coast to Coast cycle ride on the 20th of May which will help us grow our bicycle and kitchen workshop. On the 3rd of June, some young people walked the Wee Wander for CSA. And, last but not least, we will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the St. John’s School on the 29th of June, pictures to follow. Have a great summer! Alex Busch, Executive Director CSA

Cults Library News We’ve had another busy summer here at the library, causing all sorts of mischief and mayhem with our Mischief Maker’s Summer Reading Challenge proving as popular as ever with children. We had great fun with our treasure hunt and Beano themed events. Techfest also joined us to do some sessions in the library. Knex lighthouses were made and dinosaur fossils were investigated! We hope that everyone who came along to the events or took part in the Challenge had fun and we look forward to seeing you back in the library soon. Our monthly Bookbug sessions are held every fourth Monday at 2:15pm. They are suitable for children from birth to four years old with their parents/carers. Bookbug sessions last about 30 minutes and include stories, songs and rhymes to encourage bonding between you and your little ones. The sessions are part of the wider Bookbug programme, which includes the free Bookbug packs. All children in Scotland receive four packs at different stages between birth and primary 1. For more information about the packs see the Scottish Book Trust website: http://scottishbooktrust.com/bookbug/bookbug-bags or ask library staff during your next visit. The next session dates are 20th August, 17th September, 15th October and 12th November. Booking is not required but if you do have any questions regarding Bookbug sessions or any of the library services please don’t hesitate to contact us on the details below. We are currently planning our autumn events and activities, so keep an eye out in the library for the next edition of our What’s On guide or like us on Facebook to keep up to date with all the latest library news! This is by way of a huge “thankyou” to all the folk locally who responded so generously to the Christian Aid Week collection this year. The three churches on the North Deeside Road; Cults Parish Church, St. Devenicks Episcopal Church and Culter Parish Church work together and we were able to send over £9,000 to Christian Aid from the collection and our coffee morning. We call ourselves Cults to Culter Christian Aid! Our next fundraiser is our sponsored walk on the old railway line on the 1st September. So, if you would like to take part or sponsor someone who is taking part, please feel free to get in touch on 861377 or maureen.ag@ btinternet.com

Friends of the Allan Park, Cults We have had lovely weather this summer to enjoy the tranquil delights of the Allan Park in Cults. Since the new playpark was installed it has been good to see a noticeable increase in the number of families and young people who have discovered the park and are enjoying the play equipment, playing games on the field and having picnics. An ‘Action Afternoon’ removed some undergrowth and this will continue to open up the area between the east entrance and the play area to make it less dense and dark giving a more open aspect to welcome visitors. David Allan, the park benefactor in 1897, had a lifelong connection with the Seven Incorporated Trades in Aberdeen. This mutual connection is resulting in us cooperating to restore his granite memorial fountain in the park which has suffered from neglect and damage. We are also working in close collaboration
with the Community Council Footpath Group who are improving paths and placing signs to guide walkers through the Allan Park and along the river Dee. The purpose is to help more people use and enjoy this most attractive recreational and

Funds are also needed and most welcome. Please contact me at Iainhc9@ gmail.com if you can contribute and I will provide bank account details. We want more existing users and new people to know more about the park and guide the Friends group to work with the council to deliver what the community most values. With more housing and people living in the area it is important that existing parks are known about, used and enhanced to contribute to the health and wellbeing of our local community. Active Schools
Term 4 is a very busy term for schools, with lots of sports days, festivals and end of year events. It is no different for Active Schools and we’ve also had a busy term in the Cults ASG. Two events which stand out due to excellent numbers and the support of volunteers are the annual Fun Run Series, and a series of P7 transition events. Cults Fun Run Series This was my fourth Fun Run Series in the Cults ASG and easily the busiest! In total, 235 pupils from nine different primary schools signed up to take part in the races at Cults this year. The Fun Runs are a series of free to enter running races, open to pupils in P1-P7. Pupils run different distances, with P1-3’s running 400m, P4’s running 800m and P5-7’s running 1600m. Across the city there were five venues holding Fun Runs and it was great to see so many pupils from Cults, Culter and Milltimber taking part across Aberdeen. The Cults races took place across four Thursdays in May and we were fortunate to have some excellent weather. I was helped by a great team of volunteers made up of Cults Academy pupils, university students and parent helpers. They helped set up the course, cover the registration table, marshal the course, lead the junior races, sort out the finishing order and tidy away again. With almost 200 pupils every week, an event of this size simply could not have taken place without the help of these volunteers!
Of the 235 pupils who signed up to take part in the Cults races, just under 200 completed three or more races and received a participation medal. A number of pupils in the P4-7 races also qualified for the citywide Champion of Champions event in June where the top runners from all the race venues came together for one last race.
saying that their kids had enjoyed getting to try out the sports and meet other pupils who were interested in the same sports, as well as meeting the coaches who take the sessions. A big thanks to the 13 Academy pupils, five teachers and two club coaches who helped to deliver the various activities.
P7 Transition Sports
John Dixon (Active Schools Coordinator – Cults ASG) JoDixon@sportaberdeen.co.uk or 01224 507687
During June, I held a series of nine transition sports events for pupils coming to Cults Academy after the summer holidays. Cults Academy offer a fantastic range of extracurricular sports for pupils, delivered by staff, senior pupils and local club coaches. Thanks to the volunteer staff, pupils and club coaches, I was able to offer a programme of afterschool activities for pupils to come along and try out the various sports. Spread across three weeks, with the two S1 induction days in the middle, P7s were able to come along and try a session of netball, rugby, basketball, volleyball, Active Girls Group, hockey, table tennis, badminton and football.
Please feel free to get in touch if you’d like to know more about Active Schools activities in your area. We are always looking for volunteers who would like to help out at existing activities. Or perhaps you have a passion for a particular sport or physical activity and would be interested in coaching a small group of kids – I’d love to hear from you if this is you.
This was a good chance for pupils; to meet the staff and pupil coaches who run these clubs at the Academy; to meet pupils from other schools who are interested in the same sports; and, for some pupils, the chance to try out new sports. Almost 100 pupils from six different primaries signed up to take part in the various events, with some just coming along to one or two sessions and some coming along to five or six! Feedback from parents was really positive,

Association. She is also renowned for her memory. Betty has at hand a whole host of songs and poems that she can sing and recite at the drop of a hat. A full and fulfilled life. Scottish International Elizabeth (Betty) Morrison joined Cults Bowling Club in the year 2000. Betty has been partially-sighted all her life but this has not stopped her from fully taking part in the life of her local bowling club and also in the wider world of bowls.
She has been an active member of the Scottish Blind Bowling Association for many years and received her first cap for the Blind Bowlers in 1997. Since then she has played for Scotland nine times and this has led her to play internationally not only against the Home Countries but she has also represented her
country in New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and Israel. Betty thought her international career was probably over a couple of years ago but she was recalled to the colours in June of this year and travelled to Wales to play in the Home Countries championships. Betty is obliged to travel with a fully-sighted companion to these events and this time her travelling friend was Marlyn Bewsher who is also a member of Cults Bowling Club. But life isn’t always easy! Betty and Marlyn met up with the team bus in Glasgow. The journey to Wales took eight hours including two breaks of an hour for the driver. It was not so bad on the way back---only seven hours. We suffer for our sport! Betty was not in the medals on this occasion but earlier in the year she had played in Glasgow at Scotland’s Internal Championships, where she added a bronze medal to her overall haul. But Betty is involved in much more than bowls. She seems to have the habit of becoming president of any club or organisation she joins. She has, of course, been president of Cults Bowling Club. She has been president of the Guild in Cults Kirk and has been a threetime president of the Scottish Blind Bowlers
Club Business Hasn’t it been a glorious summer? Certainly, in my memory—which is a long one. The outcome is that the greens are hard and running fast- ideal bowling conditions. We have had Open Days, Fun Days, coaching for children and all the competitions have progressed well and are reaching a climax. It reminds us why we enjoy the outdoor game. Open Doors You are welcome to come down to the club at any time. In particular, every Tuesday morning we have a work group of members doing all these jobs that need to be done during the season. If you want to know more about the club, then that is a good time to come along and have a chat; time it right and you will be treated to a rowie as well! The club’s web site is www.cultsbowlingclub.weebly.com There you will find details of our programme and general information about the club. Easter Anguston Farm (VSA) We had another really good day helping at the farm on 9 May and I know our members thoroughly enjoyed being able to give some practical help to the farm; painting and repairing picnic tables and planting up of hanging baskets. We greatly appreciate the hospitality and friendship from Neil Robertson and his team. Charity Art Event On 20 May, RCAD held another successful Charity Art Evening presented by watercolour artist, Jonathan Wheeler at the Marcliffe Hotel and raised funds for Alzheimer Scotland, Sue Ryder & Rotary Charities. Emma Leiper Finlayson, Capital Appeal Manager for Sue Ryder commented, “your gift enables us to fund the extension of Dee View Court and towards the creation of one of the 20 new bedrooms. I hope you will have some sense of pride in knowing that you have a small part of the new building and are helping someone living with a severe neurological condition to receive the care they so vitally need” Aboyne & District Golf outing
President, Dave Gordon and rotarians, Dave Anstee, David Gair, John Conroy, Bill Jamieson and Gordon Skinner took part in this event held on 9 June. The day was all about supporting two great charities in particular, Children 1st and UCAN, as well as the ongoing support through Rotary to various smaller local community organisations, youth organisations and international projects.

On Wednesday 13 June, local children with additional support needs were treated to a day of fun, laughter and new experiences organised jointly by 17 Rotary Clubs from Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. Around 500 children were entertained with bouncy castles, magic shows, Satrosphere, drumming, pony rides, horse and cart rides, face painting, sideshows, emergency services vehicles, train rides, football and many more attractions. Throw in lunch and end with a disco; the result was lots of happy, tired children (and volunteers!) who took part in this great day. Primary School Quiz 2018 The Final of The Primary School Quiz 2018 took place on Saturday, 10 June. Culter Primary School team performed amazingly well; being mid-point at the halfway stage then storming back to third position and eventually falling back to be seventh overall. Sixteen teams made the Final from the 500+ schools which took part from all over Scotland. The questions this year were much harder than previous years’ so it makes the performance even more impressive! At the end of the ten rounds there was a tie for first position so a tie break of a further six questions was held. The winning school was Pittencrieff followed by Craighill with Robert Gordon’s in third position.

MBC festival Update
We are delighted to share this year’s Festival schedule. Flyers and posters are in the process of being distributed throughout the local area, so you have access to all information you need to plan your Festival activities!
To summarise this year’s programme in numbers, we have: 23 events over 18 days at 15 venues Eleven of the events are brand new to the programme and include a Charity Fashion Show, Gin Tasting, Yoga, Ballroom Dancing and Upcycling Workshops. We are so lucky to have the support of a range of local clubs and businesses who are willing to run free Come and Try events during the Festival period. If you enjoy the Come and Try event, please consider making a donation or supporting/ recommending these organisations in the longer term – this is how we maintain our thriving community.
Key things to note for the 2018 Festival:
For the first time, our Opening Ceremony will be a public event The Art Exhibition is a well-established and well-loved event, and this year will include a display of artwork from Senior pupils at Cults Academy. We hope that the whole community will take the opportunity to view the work of talented local artists. Please note that parking at Newton Dee is extremely limited, so please consider car sharing and/ or parking outside the campus and walking to the Phoenix Centre. The MBC Festival committee is hugely grateful to both the CBM Community Council and Mackinnons Solicitors for the financial assistance they have provided towards this year’s programme. The Festival is a non-profit making community event; all financial donations are used to cover expenses directly related to the Festival events, as well as printing and advertising costs. We will update our Facebook page with the latest news regarding the planned events - www.facebook.com/mbcfestival. We can also be contacted via email: mbcfestival@cbmcommunity.org.uk

Milltimber Playgroup News
J
uly marked the end of the term here at Milltimber Playgroup before the children enjoy the long summer break. It’s been a fantastic year for the playgroup, with a really busy and well-attended final term. We’ll be sad to say goodbye to those children leaving to start primary school; however, we wish them the best of luck, and we are excited to welcome back returning families and those starting with us for the first time next term, for another year of fun and learning.
It’s been an action-packed term with lots of fun activities and learning opportunities with the children continuing to enjoy the outdoor spaces surrounding the community hall and the large range of indoor activities and toys that the playgroup offers. The improvement in the weather has allowed the children to take their play outside, where they have enjoyed picnics, running and jumping together and exploring their senses with water and foam. They have been making good use of the fantastic new park that was recently installed next to the playgroup and were also able to enjoy a morning of ‘slip ‘n’ slide’ fun on the hill behind the playgroup. This was made even better by the glorious sunshine and provided a great deal of entertainment. Even some of the parents had a go! The children have received new story books to take home this term, courtesy of Book Bugs, and have been planting flowers, and learning how to look after them by watering them and watching them grow. There has also been lots of singing, dancing and making music. The Wednesday and Friday Forest School continues to thrive, with several new children this term. The children have been exploring ways to keep safe when climbing on fallen trees, building dens, making a mess in the mud kitchen and using the ‘story stones’ to tell each other stories. The end of term was marked with a party for the children and their families. This was thoroughly enjoyed by all and was a great end to what has been a fantastic year! About Milltimber Playgroup and Forest School: We operate from the Milltimber Community Association Hall. In addition to our weekday morning sessions, we also offer an optional lunch club and a wraparound service which transports children to Milltimber School Nursery’s afternoon session if required, providing seamless child care from 09.15 to 15.35, Monday to Friday. We also offer the wrap around transportation service from Milltimber school morning nursery and lunch club for our Friday afternoon Forest School session, which means child care from 08.30 to 14.40. There is currently space in some sessions. Please contact our Playgroup Manager Julie McWilliam on 07740 575273 or email milltimberplaygroup@hotmail.com to find out more or to arrange to visit and meet the staff; we look forward to welcoming you!

Milltimber Scout Group News The Milltimber Scout Group had a great summer with all sections enjoying fun outdoors and making good use of the Templars’ Park campsite.
The role of a Museum Volunteer is very important and we’d like to welcome more Volunteers to support the Museum.
Beavers had an excellent weekend in June with their ‘Spy Camp’ Sleepover and enjoyed an evening of games and challenges with our Cubs at Templars’ Park, finishing up with badge presentations and ice cream! Cubs took to the water with ‘Splash!’ sailing sessions on Loch of Skene and most of the Cubs took part in the District Cub Camp in June we invited all except the four who had only been to one or two cub meetings after swimming up from Beavers.
Your help would be appreciated in the Tea Room, Front of House, Education and Museum Guide Roles. To find out more about these and other roles contact
Scouts enjoyed a hike up Millstone Hill on a fine June evening and the Summer Camp in Glen Tanar in August where they enjoyed cooking on open fires, hiking, camp skills and helping the Ranger with a conservation project. Many thanks to our Leaders, Young Leaders, Adult Helpers and Executive Committee who work hard to provide a great programme of activities for our group.

Community Christmas Lights Project Sponsorship Opportunity Update
CULTS BIELDSIDE AND MILLTIMBER COMMUNITY COUNCIL
There’s nothing like the sparkle of Christmas lights to give our community an instant festive makeover. The Community Council own a number of Christmas lights which light up the trees and shrubbery opposite the Cults Hotel. This makes a wonderful festive backdrop for our annual community carol singing event.
The Community Council would like to say
Without your help and support we could not have created our 2017 Christmas Lights display, the display has given our community a real festive makeover. Sincere thanks to our sponsors below and also to our sponsors who wish to remain anonymous. Onwards onto the 18/19 festive season.
During 2016/17, your community council embarked on a Christmas Lights Project with the aim of introducing new festive lighting into our community. We reached out to prominent local businesses for sponsorship and were delighted to obtain sufficient sponsorship to fund four new festive lights, which were mounted along the North Deeside Road in Cults. The new lights created a colourful illumination, a good starting point to our own winter wonderland. The Community Council aims to erect festive lights all along the North Deeside Road in Cults, Bieldside and Milltimber. So here we go again - get out your Santa hats, we are now planning for the 2018/19 festive season. The Switch-On Ceremony will take place at the Cults Kirk Centre on the 17th November 4-6pm. The purpose of this article is to obtain sufficient sponsorship from within our local community to fund the project; we are therefore reaching out again to:
- Prominent local businesses - Community stakeholders - Anyone who would like to sponsor a light We recently received a request from an individual to sponsor a light and plaque for a loved one; what a wonderful gesture.
The Community Council would be grateful if you would become either our project’s principal sponsor or alternatively a sponsor of one or more festive lights (at a cost of £600 per light). Sponsor names will be displayed on a plaque located on each column-mounted feature and acknowledged in our community magazine MBC News; you will also be our guest at the Switch-On Ceremony, which will take place at the Cults Kirk Centre on the 17th November 4-6pm. It’s all happening at Peterculter Golf Club As the summer draws to a close, our attention turns to our Autumn social calendar. Our Family Open Day in April gave us many new members and families joining the club, and so we have decided to hold another Open Day on Sunday 16th September. There will be plenty to see and do for the whole family so if you’ve ever thought about starting golf or introducing a loved one to the game, this is an opportunity not to be missed! There will be special offers on the day to play and a great offer on membership that covers the rest of the season plus winter golf. At Peterculter, we strive to include variety in our calendar, to be not just a golf club! With a growing social membership, we have lots of great events coming up, from a beer festival to a murder mystery. Keep an eye on our website for further updates on our social events. It costs just £20 to join as a social member; with that £20 going back onto your membership card to spend within the club, why not make Peterculter Golf Club your new local? Our Rob Roy Room is up and running, creating an intimate setting for private functions. The Clubhouse is now available to hire for birthdays, retirement parties, funeral teas, and for the more organised amongst us, Christmas parties! Our new function menus can be tailored to suit all. New members are always welcome to come along and see what a varied programme we offer. Evening meetings are normally held at Cults Community Centre starting at 7.30 pm. Contact: Chairman, Paul Dumont 01224 863938, chair@ cultshillwalkingclub.org.uk, or The club May weekend away was most successful with 50 club members staying at the Crianlarich Hotel. Weather on the Saturday was not good with low cloud and rain for those who went high. Some of us took the train to Ardlui, then a small boat across the head of Loch Lomond before walking part of the West Highland way back to Crianlarich and had a very pleasant day. However, Sunday weather more than made up for the Saturday.

Members are making the most of the fantastic weather and long, light nights to get out and play tennis. Our competitive members are playing weekly matches in the North East of Scotland Lawn Tennis Association summer league. This year, the club has six men’s and four ladies’ teams competing. Cults ladies’ team had a very successful season winning the Monday Deeside Social League. The club’s Singles Box Leagues are also being played and, for those of us just looking to have a friendly game, there is social play on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and Saturday and Sunday afternoons where we get together to play a few games with each other. Our Midsummer Social Tournament and BBQ was great fun and saw some friendly competition between members! Our Juniors and Minis are also busy. Junior Night on Thursday evenings has a great turnout every week where our junior members come along to play games together. We also have coaching every other night of the week so there is a session to suit everyone. During the school holidays the coaching staff are running summer camps (full details can be found on our website). With six floodlit, all-weather courts, our members are able to play all year round, come rain or come shine. Cults Lawn Tennis Club offers something for everyone, from complete beginner to A-team player. If you are interested in playing tennis you are welcome to join us. We have a comprehensive coaching programme for members and non-members. Full details can be found on the club website www.cultstennisaberdeen.co.uk or by contacting our head coach Gareth Rennie. Milltimber Circular Walk Introduction
A 3.6 mile (5.8 km) walk which includes paths on both the east and west sides of the AWPR in woodland and on tracks with views across and up the River Dee; some parts, however, involve short stretches on roads. It entails walking from the Deeside Way up to almost the highest point of Milltimber, a total ascent of 405 feet (124 metres). Allow two hours.
Start and Finish
There are three suitable starting points in close proximity: the junction of Bellenden Walk with the North Deeside Road, if joining the walk by bus (bus stops are close by); the Deeside Way, if walking from Bieldside; and Culter House Road, if arriving by car, with parking at the side of the road.
Footpath Details
A range of surfaces from roads to rough ground but most of the walk is on tracks and footpaths.
Route Directions
These directions start at the junction of Bellenden Way with Culter House Road and describe the route in an anticlockwise fashion. Enter a narrow passage, almost opposite Bellenden Way with wood fences on either side on the west side of No. 48. At the back of the houses the path crosses a small stream, enters woodland and fades out. Bear left up the woods in northwesterly direction and you will eventually meet a path heading roughly north about ten yards in from the field on the west side of the wood. Follow this till you can go no further north and the path does a U-turn and enters a rough field. Carry on to the centre of the field where it meets another path; turn left here and make for the north-east corner, close to the junction of Colthill Road with Contlaw Road. The field may become a housing development site but the developer has promised to maintain access as far as possible between the woods and Contlaw Road. On reaching Contlaw Road head uphill but be very careful when the pavement finishes as there is a nasty corner. Follow the road, with open view to the south, till the bridge over the AWPR is reached. Immediately past the bridge, turn left down a lane leading to Nether Beanshill farm. When you arrive at the farm turn right and follow the track, past Guttie Hill to Culter House road – there are some great views to the south and west. Cross straight over Culter House Road into the wood and immediately turn left on a rough footpath. Follow this and turn right (south) when it joins a path from the road at the edge of the golf course. About a hundred yards further on (at a corner of the golf course) bear right onto an ancient track and follow this round till you meet a lane at the back of Culter House. Turn right and continue till you meet the North Deeside road where you turn right and cross over. Take the second left – Pittengullies Brae. In less than a quarter of a mile the Deeside Way crosses the road; turn left onto it. The Deeside Way soon crosses the AWPR using the new Milltimber Brae bridge. At the far end turn up Milltimber Brae to the junction with the North Deeside Road. Cross over with care and walk up Bellenden Way, an unsurfaced lane, to Culter House Road.
Extension. Those who would like to extend the walk could explore the Hill of Arbeck.

Footpath Group News The Footpath Group held a volunteer day on Saturday 16 June, working on the Cults Den path between Cults Hotel and Friarsfield Road. Working with ACC Countryside Ranger, Duncan MacNeill, volunteers dug cross trenches and laid path drains as well as cutting back vegetation and scraping back path verges. Thank you to all the volunteers who gave their time and effort to improve this community path. The path drains were purchased with funds donated to the footpath collecting box in Cults Library. Thank you to everyone who donated. Cults Library is now the only place you can obtain a copy of our leaflet “Walks Round Cults” and donate to the footpath maintenance fund. If you are unable to help with any of the volunteer path work, please consider donating to the box in the library to help us maintain our community paths. You may have noticed waymarkers appearing on some of the routes described in the leaflet. We hope to install more of these over the summer.

Inchgarth’s Key Role in Keeping Aberdeen’s World Class Water on Tap Cults has played a major role in the provision of Aberdeen’s public water supply since the earliest days of municipal provision. The River Dee continues to provide the key supply of high quality raw water for the city today, but the infrastructure operated by Scottish Water and its predecessors to deliver drinking water safely to customers’ taps has been extensively renewed over the decades. Many of the most important changes have taken place at the Water Treatment Works that serve the city and surrounding communities, ensuring that the production of drinking water is closely controlled to meet strict regulatory and safety standards. Perhaps the most visible change locally since the original Victorian scheme has been the creaton of Inchgarth Reservoir in the 1980s to provide the ability to store water from the Dee before it is pumped for treatment at Mannofield and then distribution across much of the city. Today, the surroundings of the reservoir provide an area of open green space which can be enjoyed by residents and wildlife alike. However, please keep in mind that the reservoir itself has an important operational purpose. Scottish Water staff and their contractors need to be able to access the reservoir and the surrounding infrastructure 24 hours a day in order to make sure that everything keeps working smoothly. With this in mind, it’s vitally important that access for vehicles via the site entrance from Inchgarth Road is possible at all times. Scottish Water is asking all recreational users of the land around the reservoir to avoid parking in this area at any time.
Simeon House News At the time of writing this we have been enjoying some glorious weather. Our doors have been open to the ‘Golden Garden’ and our residents have been enjoying the fresh air and sunshine. All very good for the soul! As our friends will know, Simeon is very lucky to benefit from a range of volunteers and we held a wee gathering to acknowledge their contribution and mark Volunteers Week 1st to 7th June. For this occasion, we also had the honour of a visit from Maureen Watt MSP who gave time from her busy schedule to meet and speak with our volunteers. Speaking of volunteers, we have recently had staff from RBS give up time from their busy working week to help us in the garden. It’s never looked so beautiful and they helped develop a small pond in our memorial corner. We are also currently raising funds to develop our accommodation for our international volunteers. To help with this and inspire others, our good friend Marjory Roadknight recently completed the kilt walk and raised £1000 for the campaign. As usual, we have had a range of concerts and activities with a highlight being the Golden Games, an inter-care home pentathlon. Safe to say, Simeon came away with trophies and smiles on our faces. You can follow some of our news and happenings on Simeon’s face book page. Please like our page to keep up to date. Striving for Excellence
NKI’s top instructors recently attended a Child Protection course in Aberdeen to further reinforce their wealth of experience.
Striving for excellence, perfecting one’s character and becoming the master of oneself is the core message and the goal of the National Karate Institute. In today’s world of social media, constant distraction, lethargy and broken sprit, the NKI have been a beacon on the horizon for many. Their karate schools see adults and children across the generational divide train alongside each other in a battle against themselves for self-improvement, to learn the martial discipline that is traditional Karate-do.
Karate students’ success in Ireland
All instructors were once students and can recognise the weakness and distraction present in the novice; problems that many karate practitioners have also defeated with years of dedication to training. Today’s student is tomorrow’s master and instructors must lead by example for the spirit of karate to thrive and contribute to a better society. Getting the message of traditional Karate-do and the Budo discipline across to uninitiated students can be very challenging. For many of the younger children it might be the first time they have encountered any discipline and it can be a shock for some. It is important that instructors can recognise this in children and for the parents to understand that karate is not a day care group. Initially, children may not know how to handle discipline and instructors must know how to communicate this, alongside the NKI’s core message, in an appropriate, legal and sensible manner. The NKI curriculum is laid out in easy steps, allowing children to understand karate rules and ceremony. Instructors are also aware they have a responsibility towards the safety and wellbeing of all who train in the dojo and that is why 17 of the

Athletes from Aberdeen’s own National Karate Institute had more than just the luck of the Irish behind them on their recent trip to the open World Karate Championships in Belfast. Their dedication and perseverance paid off as they won a staggering 34 medals. The selffunded NKI had some great results bringing back 12 gold, 15 silver and seven bronze medals! This was a great achievement against fierce competition from 16 different karate federations from Ireland and other countries. Team coach and chief NKI instructor, Ronnie Watt (9th Dan) (O.B.E. & Order of The Rising Sun), said: “We were heavily outnumbered and underfunded, but these results show we were not out-classed. For such a small club from a small country we proved we have what it takes, against all odds and I am so proud we can deliver for Aberdeen and Scotland. It goes to show that Karate training really brings the best out of people. All our students were first class in my eyes. Medals or not.” Invitations for the NKI squad to perform and teach karate have since been coming in from around the world. However, currently, they are now back in training and are aiming for success at the next festival; The International Karate Festival which the NKI squad, themselves, will host in Aberdeen this summer. New members of all ages are welcome to the club. Anyone wishing to train real traditional karate in Aberdeen should contact Ronnie Watt, tel. Aberdeen 734607 for more information. The club meet in Aberdeen, Cults and Inverurie and details can be found on the club’s website www.karate.scotland.info

Cults Playgroup News During the summer term at playgroup we have had much outdoor time in the garden. Apparatus for physical play has been spaciously arranged outside and sand and water play take on a new dimension in the open air. This year we have had lots of fun with outdoor climbing frames and den building. Unusually, the watering cans have been much in demand to keep our potatoes, sunflowers and bedding plants moist. The children have been creative with outside logs and cut wood piles. Our mud pit is always popular for digging. Sometimes we had a mud kitchen producing soup and cups of tea; sometimes diggers were busy moving soil and stones. Activities for the term have been linked to interests of the children. Families and homes is always a popular theme and there has been much dressing up and role play. Building blocks and Lego test the construction skills of the children. The Royal Wedding provided inspiration for dressing up, discussion about favourite snack and a variety of art and craft work. Outside, bugs and mini-beasts have been hunted out and observed in basins with magnifying glasses. We had a jar of caterpillars. With the special food provided we watched them change into fat caterpillars. The cocoons were built and then the butterflies emerged. Wonderful to observe the full life cycle! We have also had frog spawn from ponds on the railway line. These have grown bigger, developed a defined body shape and eventually grown back and front legs. There was much excitement when animals resembling a cross between a lizard and a frog were found in the weed; smooth newts that spent a week in our tank and were then taken back to the railway line pond. We have had a variety of specialist people come in to the playgroup setting this term. These have included, Calli from STEM (formerly Satrosphere) to give a science talk and inspire the children about Space, a puppet show with Kidgloves Puppets and ‘The Critter Keeper’ bringing in his animals. Energetic sessions have included dancing with Michelle Murray (Danscentre), music and movement with ‘Abricabeats’ and a session with Birgitte Legge of ABC Education. The children enjoyed walking to Cults Kirk Centre and singing to an audience at ‘The Hub Cafe’ and then having a snack themselves. We have also had a sponsored ‘ Welly Walk’ with the proceeds going to ‘Kayleigh’s Wee Stars’, a cancer charity for children. With the end of term fast approaching we will say goodbye to many children moving to a new setting. We look forward to August and welcoming back familiar faces and meeting new children ready to start the group. We still have places available for August, so if your child is 2.5 years or older, please contact us on our mobile: 07842 470828 or email cultsplaygroup@gmail.com Our sessions run during term time between 9.00 am and 12.10 pm in the North Hall on Quarry Road.

Peterculter Medical Practice The practice is very pleased to introduce our new GP colleagues to the team! Dr Ewan Paterson joined us as a partner in June – he has a wealth of previous General Practice experience behind him and has an ongoing significant role in undergraduate medical education with Aberdeen University. Dr Jennifer MacDonald joined us as a salaried GP in July – she has most recently been working in a similar role at Alford. We warmly welcome our new doctors and wish them both a happy time working with us at Peterculter. We have been involved in a pilot project over the last 2 years or so to test out so-called ‘online consultation’ (known as Web GP), which many of you have tried. This was accessible via our practice website and allowed an online message to be sent to the practice seeking advice about a medical query or problem – the duty doctor would then process the request within 24 hours, resulting in whatever action was deemed appropriate. In our experience of the pilot project, which has now come to an end, often the resulting action would be for a medical or nurse appointment to be made in the traditional way to assess the problem more fully. Occasionally a direct prescription was possible, depending on the nature of the request. Overall however we did not feel this service was used sufficiently to continue with it. Recent acts of vandalism to our building have been an upsetting development here; such mindless actions are incomprehensible. The police are dealing with those incidents currently. Best wishes Dr Douglas Harris

Everything Comes to Those Who Wait
Meow! With the weather having been so consistently dry and sunny recently there are a number of ‘missing’ cats in Aberdeenshire that have taken themselves off, unable to resist the call of the wild. What should you do if your cat doesn’t come home when expected or is a house cat that has escaped out an open window or door? Firstly, check everywhere in your house and garden. Cats are drawn to small hiding spaces and are often found very close by, especially if they are used to being indoors. Talk to your neighbours and ask them to check in and under sheds and garages that aren’t often open as your cat may have become trapped inside. Call for your cat when it’s quiet, late at night and listen for meowing. Leave pet bedding, worn clothing, a used litter box or even the contents of the vacuum cleaner outside, protected from the weather to attract your cat home with familiar scents. Cats have such a keen sense of smell that this trick often works. Put up posters and put flyers through letter boxes in the surrounding area. Social media plays a big part in the success of reuniting pets and owners these days too. Post pictures of lost or found pets on these Facebook pages: Fubar News Lost and Found Pets LOST AND FOUND PETS ABERDEEN/ABERDEENSHIRE Cats Protection- Central Aberdeen (Lost & Found Line: 07811 012604) Many people feed cats outside that they think are strays, not realising they are just lost pets. If you see a cat hanging around that you haven’t seen before and know doesn’t belong to a neighbour, do take it in to any vet or call the Cats Protection League for a volunteer to scan the pet for a microchip. Every vet and rescue centre know of the microchip database Petlog and they will check for animals flagged as missing in the event that your cat is brought in. Check with local vets and the Dog Warden (03000 200 292) in case your pet has been brought in or picked up. In Aberdeen unfortunate victims of road traffic accidents are scanned for microchips so you would be informed.
The city waits from north to south, for the thirty-six miles of bypass. Opening in September/October? Everything comes to those who wait. Waiting for the transformed, remodelled, yes, we might have an Art Gallery. Coming next year, hopefully, perhaps? Everything comes to those who wait. Then you might wonder about the iconic Music Hall, restored to glory. When will it re-open again? Everything comes to those who wait. The new Exhibition Hall rises, more and more everytime I pass, geometric shapes, waiting for glass. But I can wait, no hurry here. It's coming soon, no need to fear. By Margaret Cook
If you haven’t already, do get your cat microchipped, register with Petlog and keep your contact details up to date. This really is the best way to reunite cats with their owners in the event that they go missing.

Our competition season is off to a good start and we look forward to building on our success at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow on 18th August. We are also very proud of our band’s learner section and are delighted that several of our players have now graduated from the Chanter to Bagpipes. With that in mind if anyone has any unused pipes they are willing to donate, we would be delighted for more of our youngsters to be given this opportunity. Community Council Recycling Visit In March this year a group of our CBMCC Councillors were invited to visit the Altens East Recycling and Resource Facility, which opened in October 2017. This facility where mixed recyclables collected from homes and businesses are sorted before being sold as high-quality materials for reprocessing is Scotland’s newest and most advanced materials recycling facility. The plant can process up to 20 tonnes of mixed recycling an hour, including glass, cardboard, newspaper, plastics and metals, and is part of Aberdeen City Council’s Zero Waste project, aimed at increasing recycling rates and reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill. It was fascinating to see the new technology which is being used to process this volume of waste, plus the human interventions which assist the process. On the visit we discussed whether some of our personal household recycling procedures need to be revised in view of the use of new Optical Recognition machinery, etc. Here are the answers we got about what we can or cannot recycle:•
Tops should be taken off most recycled bottles, jars and pots, but for plastic bottles leave the tops on to help prevent the bottle being crushed, as this allows the optical recognition system to function more effectively.
•
Shredded paper should be put inside a paper bag, paper envelope, cardboard box or cereal box and then into the mixed recycling bin.
•
Wine corks and metal bottle caps can go into the mixed recycling bin.
•
Plastic beakers, cups and glasses can go into mixed recycling, provided they are the flexible PP/HDPE ones. However, if they are polystyrene, they should be put into the small black (= residual waste) bin.
•
Please rinse food residue off kitchen foil, tubs etc, before putting them into mixed recycling. If these items are dirty, put them in the small black bin.
•
Dry paper napkins and kitchenroll can go into mixed recycling. However, if they are dirty or wet, put them into the small black bin.
•
Polystyrene party plates and plastic cutlery should go into the small black bin.
•
Empty medicine blisterpacks should go into the small black bin. If there are any medicines in them, please take them back to the pharmacy.
If you want to learn more about recycling here is a useful website www.sita.co.uk/individuals/what-happens-to-waste/recycling/ Happy recycling! Eleanor Brennan, Community Councillor

T
he unusually dry early summer weather has made planting extremely difficult. The cold late spring kept the plug plants small and then they had to contend with drought conditions. Planting has gone ahead but frequent trips for water are required and a good downpour or two followed by warm weather is what is really needed.
The hanging baskets were delivered on time and have been deployed on the lampposts as before. They seem to be thriving in the warm weather thanks to their built-in reservoirs.
It has been suggested that next year, yes garden planning does happen so far in advance, we hold an ‘Open Gardens Weekend’ towards the end of May when many local gardens are at their best. Residents who participate would allow visitors into their gardens to show them off, warts and all. It is NOT A COMPETITION. The idea is to share what we have done in our gardens with others who would not normally see them. The idea is in embryonic form and in the first instance we need to gauge interest. If you think you might like to show your garden, please contact me at the email address or phone number below. We probably need a minimum of 10 -12 gardens to make it worthwhile. If enough people are interested, then we can start to make plans although interest at this stage is not a commitment. Graham Payne, gpayne@briartsl.co.uk Tel. 01224868827

We are very lucky to have active Rainbow, Brownie and Guide Units in the Milltimber and Cults area. This is due to the hard work and dedication of all the Leaders. Previously as an Organisation we could give you a list of all the Units in the area, the name and contact details of the Leaders and as an interested parent you could contact the Leaders directly, but now due to our Nationwide “Safe from Harm” Policy we can no longer publish this information. We now have a Website that you can visit and register an interest for the age group you want a place in for your daughter. It is a simple procedure and once you have registered, a Guider should be in touch within 3 weeks to say if there are places available or if your daughter will be placed on the waiting list. You will be asked to put in your Postcode, the type of Unit you are interested in and if there are more than 1 suitable Unit you will be asked to put your 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice.
