Kingswells Primary School News

Pathways to cycling success Primary 5 pupils from Kingswells Primary met with representatives from AECOM, NesTrans and SusTrans who are tasked with improving the cycle path linking Kingswells and Westhill. Pupils were asked to think of any problems that there might be with the current route and also shared their experiences of cycling on different paths in and around Kingswells. They showed on a map the parts of Kingswells which are safe and not so safe to cycle in. Derry from P5EB said, “It was nice to hear other people’s opinions about cycling. I liked using the maps to show where is safe to cycle around Kingswells. It was fun coming up with ideas

about how to cross the bypass. I would definitely use an improved cycle path in the future.” The biggest challenge for the team is how to get cyclists from one side of the AWPR to the other safely. The pupils came up with some very inventive ideas as to how to solve this problem from bridges over the road, to tunnels underneath the road with an underground café or rest stop. Foyin from P5VT said, “The activities were fun and I enjoyed drawing on the map. I think we could build a bridge over the bypass to make the cycle path safer.” Although any improvements to the cycle path are not expected for a few years, the voices of children are really important in creating a path that will be well used in the future and provides for the needs of young cyclists. Tyler from P5HM said, “I learnt a lot about cycling and walking in my local area.

It would be great to have a new cycle path in future because I enjoy cycling with my family and friends and I would like it to be safer.” Primary 5 class teacher Miss Todd said, “This was a great opportunity for some of the P5 children to get involved in a project that is sure to have a positive impact on their local area in the future. The AWPR makes a huge difference to car journey times, but also has an impact on the current cycle route. The children came up with some fantastic ideas for an eco-friendly cycle path that is safe to use and respectful of the surrounding environment. I hope to see some of their ideas come to life in the future!” The AECOM representatives thanked the children for their contributions and promised to take all of their ideas back to the Engineers and design teams in the office for consideration.

Situated on North Deeside Road near the suburb of Milltimber, the sports and wellness club boasts a whole range of indoor and outdoor activities for all ages to enjoy. One person who regularly spends her time at the premises is Kippie Lodge client Aimee Smith. The mum-of-three, who works as a sales and marketing manager in real estate, has been a member of the multi-purpose leisure facility for a couple of years. And now, she says she treats the leisure centre like her second home. We caught up with Aimee to find out what makes Kippie Lodge’s services and amenities so attractive to her and her family. “The atmosphere in Kippie Lodge is really friendly and everyone knows me by my name now,” said Aimee. “I treat the centre almost like my second home. “I have hosted my birthday parties there and I often have meetings with my clients in their cafe, too. “The cafe is kind of like my second living room and I treat the outdoor area as if it was my own garden. “In summer my family and I use the outdoor play area all the time.” Boasting a variety of social activities, Aimee also loves taking part in group and family events. She said: “We went to the Easter egg hunt and my kids also loved the bouncy castle in summer.” Offering a wide range of fitness classes for its members of all abilities, Aimee goes out of her way to use the facilities five days a week. She added: “I really like their gym circuit, boot camp, HIIT (high-intensity interval training) and I also do TRX (total resistance exercise) suspension training. But there are many more classes to choose from.” Kippie Lodge also has classes including barre, which incorporates some movements derived from ballet, pilates, yoga, zumba, aqua circuits and many other fitness classes for its 3,500 members to try out. The centre’s nine-hole golf course, which is located in a woodland area on-site surrounded by trees, is also very popular, especially with Aimee’s husband Mark who uses the facilites. But it’s not just her other half who reaps the benefits of Kippie Lodge, but their children too. She said: “My husband uses the golf course facilities

and my boys – Charlie and Freddie – go to tennis classes and ‘learn to swim’ lessons. “My son Hugo is too young for normal swimming lessons so he goes to private ones. “I like to use the swimming pool and sauna, too. “And during the weekend we go swimming during ‘splash time’ as a family because that’s when my kids don’t have to be quiet and use lanes, but instead they can use floats and have fun.” Kippie Lodge also has a small physiotherapy team, which helps their members treat sports injuries, muscle and ligament strains and joint problems. They also offer electrotherapy, acupuncture, soft tissue mobilisation, pilates and postural advice. Aimee said: “I don’t use their physiotherapist service on a regular basis but I was happy with the service I received in the past. “What I use more often are their beauty facilities. “My kids have their hair cut there and I often go for manicures and pedicures. “I buy my shampoo and hair brushes from their beauty salon as well.” Kippie Lodge’s hair and beauty salon, which has been operating for more than two decades, offers an array of luxury treatments including facials, massages, waxing, and nail and eyelash treatments for both members and non-members in a relaxed and friendly environment.

After exercising and getting pampered, Aimee also likes to treat herself and her family to a tasty meal. She said: “We go to the restaurant twice a week for our tea. “Kippie Lodge’s Crathes Restaurant & Bar offer a tasty carvery on Sundays and their burgers and vegetable dishes are really nice, too. “I also often get their home-made protein bowls which are my go-to after a gym class.” Using only the best locally-sourced ingredients, the eatery offers a range of healthy sandwiches, toasties, salads, light bites as well as main dishes. The centre’s conservatory provides an attractive family dining experience, with indoor and outdoor play areas. Robin Caldwell, club director at Kippie Lodge, also thinks 2020 will be another exciting year for the leisure centre. He said: “Investments in the club will include a refurbishment of bays, target areas, lighting for the driving range and the introduction of a heated double-skinned tennis dome, allowing all-year play in comfortable surroundings. “We pride ourselves on offering an activity for all ages and this, coupled with events such as quiz nights, BBQs and family fun days, makes Kippie a great lifestyle choice for your family for 2020.” Visit kippielodge.co.uk for more information

Pilates for Back Care Some people have back pain while others have no discomfort at all. Which group will benefit more from Pilates for Back Care the most? Well, both groups, for very different reasons. Discomfort or not, there is only one thing I am interested in when I speak about back care and that is alignment. Four years ago I had no issue with my back at all. Then, literally, overnight, I was in hospital. It started at 10:00pm and by midnight I was screaming, in tears with the pain, and by 2:00am, I had been admitted. A friend of mine said to me last week she was receiving treatment for shoulder discomfort. I know she had previously suffered with back discomfort. So I asked her if they were linked. But they were not, to her knowledge.

Re-alignment will take a MINIMUM of 12 weeks for the body to adapt. You have to establish which muscles are strong for you and which are tight. Some exercises you’ll find really easy, while other exercises will be more challenging, all because of your alignment. Not because the exercises are easy or hard. Everyone is different in their ability to do an exercise. After 12 weeks you will notice your body adapting to perform an exercise because you have focused on your body’s imbalances and corrected them. To know your posture before going into ANY exercise class, come and see me. I can tell you what you need to know about your alignment. Even if you have NO discomfort now, exercising in the wrong alignment now may cause discomfort later, as it did for me. For 1-2-1 or Pilates for Back care classes visit our website: www.50sFitnessWays.co.uk/home/

Then I asked if she had ever had her posture analysed? Twelve years ago I had my posture analysed but I carried on as normal. I had received no advice at the time, on how or why I should correct it. This was my mistake as it led to my hospitalisation. Both my friend and I have issues with lower back and shoulder. We are both women in our 50’s and we have both had children and we are both right handed. Is that co-incidence or a pattern? So I asked more questions, as I did of myself, over the years too, and found that we both carry ourselves in the same way. We both tilt our pelvis forwards causing a ‘loading’ to go on at the lumbar spine, probably due to pregnancy. We both carried the babies on our left hip, causing the shoulder and hip to lift up, out of alignment. Hence the hip and shoulder discomfort.

Dog walkers/owners beware We were made aware of a distressing incident around the Wellside/ Concraig areas of Kingswells on Monday the 13th Jan 2020. A resident out walking with their dog noticed it very suddenly became unwell. The dog was off balance, uncoordinated, shaking, drooling from the mouth and leaking urine. The dog was rushed to the vet who immediately suspected he was showing symptoms of consuming a toxin. After some rigorous testing the resident was advised by the vet that they suspected the dog had consumed cannabis or a similar toxin. The dog has made a full recovery however the resident was keen to ensure that this was communicated to the local community and they have been encouraged to report the matter to the police.

Litter Picks Kingswells Community Council have organised litter picks for the local area for the following dates

Saturday 21st March Saturday 6th June Saturday 5th September We would like a to encourage as many residents and families as possible to come along and help keep Kingswells a lovely place to live. We are starting at 10am until 12, meeting up at the Kingswells Community Centre. Refreshments and snacks will be provided as a thank you to all helpers. Please come along and help us Clean Up Kingswells together.

Thank You Finally, but most importantly the KCC would like to extend a massive thank you to Graham Thom and his posse of helpers for erecting the Christmas tree and lights. Their support is invaluable to the community and the tree always looks fantastic! We are also delighted with the new Christmas lights that adorned lampposts through the village this year, it was lovely to get so many positive comments from residents.

DO GOOD, FEEL GOOD, LOOK GOOD... From waste to vision in six steps ... Education and Collaboration : fishing communities in 27 ports of Spain and 10 coastal areas of Ghana collect discarded marine plastic waste such as fishnets, ropes, lines, or bottles. Waste Collection : the 150 containers placed in 27 Spanish ports collect on average 500kg per day of discarded plastic waste. Separation : different types of waste are manually recycled, then reused as raw material. 90% of what is collected will be recycled. Only 25% of the polymer collected can be used to manufacture the frames. Up-Cycling : Plastic waste is then up-

cycled into a reusable raw material: UPSEA™ PLAST Cradle to Cradle™ Gold Certified. The fundamental characteristic of this up-cycling process is the use of waste to create new plastic. Waste is therefore an integral part of the supply chain. Product Moulding : the moulding of the frames takes place in Italy. The upcycled raw plastic firstly goes to the dryer to remove humidity then heated to 182°C (359.6°F) to mould the individual parts of each frames. Colouring : each Sea2see frame is unique. With each model being coloured by hand, this makes all of the products similar but not identical.

Are you and your parents financially ready for Higher Education? Depending on results, autumn 2020 will see many pupils heading for higher education. Undoubtedly they will feel that they are academically ready for their course but are they and their parents - financially ready? For most students funding for living costs has not increased for several years and is currently £4,750 for students whose household income exceeds £34,000 and £7,750 for students whose household income is under £21,000 Although it is not explicitly stated, the Student Awards Agency for Scotland expect parents to bridge the gap which is potentially up to £3,000 for each year of the course. So - are parents prepared to provide up to £12,000 of support - perhaps even more if they have more than one student in higher education at the same time? Students themselves can help by finding paid employment during term and vacation. However,

working too many or unsocial hours can adversely affect their studies. Banks offer interest free overdrafts but many students reach the maximum limit all too soon and resort to using credit cards, often with dire consequences. It is widely recognised that financial concerns are detrimental to academic performance. One student recently wrote “I feel that I am unable to perform to the best of my ability” In my 23 year experience as a student money adviser this sentiment is becoming more common. There is no easy answer but sitting down as a family and preparing a budget as far ahead as possible is a good start. Jim Henderson – North East Student Money Advisers

Every 15 seconds somewhere in the world a Hydra Facia is performed. What is it about this facial that makes it so po Its appeal is that it can help a wide range of skin conditions from Acne to wrinkles, dry skin and redness. You can have the full hour or nip in for a quick 30 minute 3 step treatment in your lunch break. In a nutshell it is a ‘medical grade hydradermabrasion’ which essentially is a resurfacing treatment that clears out your pores and hydrates your skin. HydraFacial is a 4 step treatment that cleanses, exfoliates, extracts and hydrates the skin with serums that have anti-aging and antioxidant properties. Boosters can be added during the treatment to aid any specific skin requirements for example hydrating lip or calming red and sensitive skin. WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE TREATMENT? The HydraFacial treatment starts with cleansing by removing the dead skin cells and excess sebum from the skin. Next, a mix of salicylic and glycolic acids are applied to the skin to break up any dirt and oil that's clogging pores. Then, the HydraPeel Tip is used to essentially vacuum out blackheads, dirt, oil, and impurities, while hydrating, plumping, and nourishing serums are simultaneously applied to the skin. WHAT DOES THE TREATMENT DO FOR YOUR SKIN? A HyraFacial treatment can improve and benefit your skin by hydrating brightening, plumping, and giving a clear complexion. It can also improve signs of aging as the treatment reduces 16

Back to Black By Katherine Sorrell Sophisticated, intense and eye-catching – use black in your interior to create drama, interest and on-trend style. Although it goes against convention, when employed with thoughtfulness and flair the use of black in an interior can be surprising and successful.

Black is bold, luxurious and versatile, and comes in many shades, ranging from cool, blueish blacks to warm, red-blacks. Use paint swatches and then test the paints out on your walls (examining them at different times of day and under various lights) to determine what works best for your room.

Although black itself is dark, the room in which it is used doesn’t have to be. and supply all the services to see the job through start to finish

Are you free on the first Wednesday of the month? Even if it’s only occasionally, you are very welcome to join us at Nosh and Natter for lunch and entertainment. It takes place in Kingswells Church from 12.30 – 2.30 and everyone is welcome. This year we started with a quiz and a raffle and it was a great opportunity to catch up with folks following the festive season. The quiz wasn’t too challenging, and the raffle was good fun. Perhaps it was a bit early in the year to have a chocolate tombola with so many Christmas and First Footing gifts still in cupboards at home, but we rose to the challenge and some of us took home even more chocolate! On February 5th we are being entertained by local singer Donald Vass and we are very much looking forward to hearing from him.

Hypnotherapy and Addictions Addiction is a growing problem, with as many as 1 in 3 people battling some type of addiction.

Hypnotherapy for addictions can be highly effective. Because hypnosis allows access to the unconscious mind, it can be very successful in changing behaviours in the longer term. Thoughts and habits linked to addictions can be tackled, along with helping to manage the stress of recovering from addiction.

Drugs, alcohol, and smoking may be the first things to spring to mind when you think of addiction but it can also include activities such as gambling, shopping, using the Internet, and sex.

I’ve previously worked as a former Specialist Nurse in addictions and substance misuse and I use this experience to help clients come out the other side.

Any activity or behaviour can potentially become addictive if it’s done to the extent that it is harmful or destructive. Some substances and activities can bring a “high” — often because of increased dopamine production that triggers feelings of pleasure and satisfaction. Once this is experienced, the brain wants more, but over time, the benchmark for this pleasure is raised. Because you need to do more to get the same effect, addiction becomes much more likely.

If you’re battling an addiction, let’s talk about how hypnotherapy can form a part of your treatment plan. Contact me on 07867 936505 or send me a message. News from Councillor Cameron... Christmas and New Year are passed, and we are back to the reality of another year, has much changed? In the previous edition KCN, I commented on the state of the Lock Block roads in Kingswells, which I have been attempting to get a satisfactory solution for since 2012. I noted in the article that it was with regret that not only has little or nothing been done to rectify the situation, but the deterioration is quite staggering. I gave as an example one road I observed to be fundamentally reduced to “rubble”, a cul-de-sac in Coldstone Avenue. I indicated I had risen this again with Officers and will continue to do so until there is resolution of this unacceptable situation. At that time the most up to date information I had was that a paper in respect of these roads would be presented to the January 2020 meeting of the Operational Delivery Committee. Unfortunately, this paper was not presented to the Committee on 9th January 2020. The Business Planner for the Committee, regarding these roads stated the following: Report Title - Policy that Specifies the Existing Granite Sett and Lock Block Streets; Notice of Motion to Council on 17th March 2017. Council Decision, March 2017 - referred the terms of the motion to Communities,

22

Housing and Infrastructure Committee. “Agrees to instruct the Interim Director of Communities, Housing and Infrastructure to develop a policy that specifies: a - the location of existing granite sett and lock block streets; b - which ones should be maintained; and c - what maintenance procedure should beused; and gives a commitment that any future repair work will be carried out sympathetically and appropriately. The 9th January 2020 item was marked as “Delayed” with the following explanation: Draft Policy considered at Corporate Management Team. Further work required before presentation to members for approval and considering being given to presentation of proposals to Full Council ahead of next meeting of Operational Delivery Committee. The Committee Decision was to transfer this Item to the Full Council Business Planner. Assuming this is transferred with the wording used in the “Delayed” explanation the issue should be presented to the Full Council Meeting on 2nd March 2020 and the next meeting of the Operational Delivery Committee is scheduled for 5th March 2020. Interesting that a policy on this matter is being presented to Council for approval, or otherwise, the day before the

Council’s Budget Meeting! Three years on and the Aberdeen City Council is procrastinating again, the residents of Kingswells are not being well served by this Administration. Other issues of importance to Kingswells include FlyTipping. After a period of relative calm in respect of this antisocial practice taking place in our green and recreational spaces such as Brimmond Hill we seem to have returned to selfish citizens dumping rubbish indiscriminately. The Evening Express ran an article on this recently, which included a photograph of dumped rubbish on Brimmond Hill. This is at best, selfish and at worse, dangerous in addition to being antisocial. The green spaces such as Brimmond Hill, are to be enjoyed. We need to encourage people to use these areas responsibly. If we have dumped rubbish which contains dangerous items or chemicals not only is the landscape being ruined, children and others using these areas as intended can be exposed to unnecessary and unacceptable danger. Please, if you are fly tipping, stop now and use the official recycling centres. If you are aware of others fly-tipping, please report them if you cannot dissuade them from this practice. Aberdeen city and suburbs have some of the most pleasant recreational

spaces in Scotland for the residents and visitors to enjoy, don’t spoil these by flytipping. Apologies if you think I am just having a rant. Kingswells is a community to live in which other parts of the country can rightly envy in terms of safety, healthy environment, community spirit and facilities, don’t let a very small minority spoil this for many who enjoy these facilities. Have a nice Spring and look after yourselves. KINGSWELLS SOCIAL WALKING GROUP Have you been feeling a bit lazy and sluggish over the Winter? Spring is not here yet, but the days are getting brighter and the gardens and countryside are coming to life again with bulbs, shoots and leaves sprouting; there is something new to see each week. We invite you to come and join us in the Kingswells Social Walking group. Our walks are short, gentle walks of between one to three miles suitable for any age group. They start every Thursday morning at 10.30 from the Community Centre and return after about an hour with the option of a stop for coffee and a chat. The walks are led by local trained volunteers and are free. We go out every week, whatever the weather, except when extreme conditions make it unsafe or unpleasant. You don’t need any special equipment, just sensible, comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for the weather. It is an opportunity to make new friends and explore Kingswells and its surroundings. We are lucky to live in such an attractive area with a variety of pleasant walks. Some of you may already be reasonably fit and active and for you, we can walk at a normal pace, but there will always be a leader who is prepared to take beginners and slower walkers, or those with health problems, who

prefer to go at a more leisurely pace. We have been assessed as Dementia friendly and suitable for the Move More programme of activity for people affected by cancer. Walking has many health benefits for us all, whatever our age or ability. These sociable walks occur all over Scotland and are supported by Paths For All and Sport Aberdeen and are approved by the NHS. Bring along your family, friends, and neighbours too! We do hope to welcome you soon. However, if you don’t fancy walking, there are all sorts of other activities for people of any fitness level, or with disabilities, of any age and gender, organised by Sport Aberdeen. They use a variety of different venues around Aberdeen. News from Councillor Delaney... Hopefully everyone had a good break over the now long forgotten festive period and batteries are fully re-charged for the year ahead. Well, we’re off to great start as the winter has been kind to us (as I write this) unlike the scorching Australian summer which has brought about so much devastation. I have close family there so I know bush fires are par for the course at the height of their summer, but not like this. This is one of so many distinct events worldwide which serves as a warning that we need to address climate change now, not in 20-30 years time. It’s going to be costly and its going to be unpopular with some people but in plain terms, we risk our grandchildren’s future unless we take action. I see raised awareness and accelerated action on climate change becoming the single biggest issue to dominate the new decade. But of course no decade is defined by a single issue and it’s anyone’s guess as to what the other main contenders will be. Hopefully in 2030 we will look back to find more positives than negatives. Many of you will be aware that the closure of the Kingswells to Cults road will not now happen before the end of March. Although this will add significantly to congestion and increased journey times, the good news is that we should be into better weather by then and the enlargement of the north side of the Kingswells roundabout which follows on from these works will now likely run into the summer holiday period when the roads are much quieter. Another growing concern is the Kingswells South junction of the AWPR where there have been daily queues at peak times along with a number of collisions and even more near misses. It’s been nearly a year since I first raised these issues, yet nothing tangible has been progressed. The good news is that Transport Scotland has finally put forward an

26

engineering solution to the council, something they agreed was needed last May! The proposed solution involves traffic lights on the roundabout and on the two slip roads. These will not operate on a fixed timed basis like the Kingswells roundabout but will instead be triggered by traffic volumes and linked into the council’s intelligent traffic management system which monitors all other movements on surrounding rounds with the aim of optimising the number of vehicles getting through the junction whilst ensuring public safety. On a different note, the lack of a footway beside the new development on Old Lang Stracht has been raised by several residents. There is agreement to construct this but its delivery relies on two different developers and Aberdeen City Council, so it has taken a bit longer than expected. I am currently chasing up a timeframe for these works and will report back on this. Other current issues include the new potholes which have broken out beside the Co-op as well as the broken hand rail at the steps and the need to re-paint the hatched area to discourage people from parking in such a manner as to block pedestrian access to the steps. None of these are the council’s responsibility to fix, but I have been working with the land owner to progress matters and I am hopeful we will see some progress very soon. To end on a positive note, all homes within the village should now be capable of connecting to high speed fibre broadband. Most homes can get speeds of around 30Mbps with some capable of speeds of over 300Mbps. Nobody should still be on speeds of 8Mbps or slower unless you have decided not to upgrade. Some people have contacted me recently asking when broadband is to be upgraded

Check out our website www.gazettemagazines.com

in their street, unaware that it has been available for some time. My advice for anyone on 8Mbps or slower is to place an order for the faster service with your chosen provider and, if that fails, get back to me and I will check to ensure your address has not been accidentally missed out from the upgrading works. As always, please get in touch to raise any concerns you may have. I am easily contactable by email or telephone and I hold regular surgeries at Kingswells Community Centre. Please check out the local press or my website for details. Life at Lathallan – The School Castle by the Sea Located on the edge of the rugged North Sea coastline, Lathallan School is a truly unique independent school for pupils aged five to 18. Lathallan offers a co-educational experience and optional boarding, with additional nursery facilities available for children aged six weeks to five.

Founded in 1949, Lathallan is based within expansive 60-acre grounds at the historic Brotherton Castle in Johnshaven – complete with an outdoor classroom and on-site farm. It is easily accessed from the city, with school buses taking just 40 minutes from Aberdeen thanks to the AWPR. At Lathallan a well-rounded education is prioritised, with pupils encouraged to focus on academic goals while being nurtured and supported to reach their full potential in extracurricular areas where they show talent, such as sport, music or art. With smaller classes than other city centre-based independent schools, pupils enjoy a learning experience tailored to their individual strengths. Lathallan pupil Millie Wark (17) is currently enjoying her final year at the school and is hoping to study Veterinary Medicine when she leaves next year. Looking to advertise ? Call Sue t : 01383 279 355

She said: “Lathallan has helped me pursue my dream of becoming a vet. I’ve gained eight As at Nat 5 level and five As at Higher and I’ve also been able to tailor my studies thanks to each class having an average of 12 pupils. “In Chemistry, within a small class in our new science centre, I’ve been able to choose a topic on eggshells that is directly relevant to veterinary studies.”

As a keen artist and musician, Millie has also been able to develop her creative passions throughout her education. She added: “Lathallan has helped me flourish in other ways. I’ve learned to sing, have become lead drummer in the Lathallan Pipe Band, I’ve climbed to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro and was commissioned by Thorpe Molloy to produce a 3D driftwood-based dolphin sculpture, after winning a competition in S1. “It is a beautiful and inspiring place that will be so hard to leave behind when I finish S6. Who wouldn’t want to come here?”
