Project Wolf Watch Project Wolf for free at https://vimeo.com/lkmarley/ projectwolf Award-winning Aberdonian filmmaker Lisa Marley has released Project Wolf, a new documentary following an experimental ‘human wolf pack’ in the Scottish Highlands. The 30-minute documentary – which is now available to watch online for free – examines Project Wolf, a study run by charity Trees for Life. The scheme saw volunteers spending weeks in the Caledonian Forest, mimicking the behaviours and disturbance patterns of large predators, like wolves, in an effort to curb overgrazing of saplings and new growth by the native red deer population. Lisa (27), originally from Westhill and now based in Bristol, was immediately drawn to the project after her mother sent her a newspaper clipping. After meeting with the charity, she knew that this was a story she had to tell and successfully funded the documentary through a crowdfunding campaign in early 2017, which was supported by BBC star and conservationist Chris Packham.

Lisa said: “It’s been over a year since I launched the crowdfunding campaign for Project Wolf, and since then I have been living and breathing this film. I am so thrilled to finally be able to share it. “Although I’ve always had a strong affinity with the natural world, making Project Wolf has really opened my eyes to the history of the woodlands that I encounter, most prominently how many non-native species are widespread even in older areas of forest. It has been fascinating to follow Trees for Life’s efforts to preserve the ancient Caledonian Forest – maintaining our landscape’s wonderful natural heritage – in such an unusual way. “When I ventured out into the forest to join the ‘human wolf pack’ I really didn’t know what to expect. I had no idea about the diversity of reasons that compelled the volunteers to become involved in the project, and how profoundly their time in the Highlands would affect them. “Rewilding is a topic that is often misunderstood.

an environment; it’s also about reflecting on the way we look at and interact with the landscape around us. All too often we become consumed by our phones and technology, however there is so much to be gained from reconnecting with natural world around us. “Meeting the people involved in the study and uncovering the conversations that are happening around rewilding in Scotland has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I am so excited to be able to share that journey.” Trees for Life chief executive Steve Micklewright added: “Trees for Life undertook Project Wolf in 2016 and 2017 with the aim of mimicking the behaviour of large predators to reduce deer browsing pressure on young seedlings in the Caledonian Forest fragments at our Dundreggan Conservation Estate. “Early monitoring results showed that the volunters were successful in disturbing the deer
and moving them on – an important feature of the predator-prey relationship. “We are grateful to the volunteers who gave up their time to work on this pilot project – and to Lisa Marley, whose film shines a light on the experiences of the volunteers during their time at Dundreggan.” Project Wolf follows on from Lisa’s last film, Red Sky on the Black Isle. The acclaimed short documentary about the mass poisoning of red kites in the Highlands has been translated into multiple languages and screened around the world at scientific conferences and film festivals, including in Spain, France and the USA. January no more... Cannot believe we are into month two of 2019. Already my mood is lifting as the night’s are getting longer. Seeing snow drops and the start of the crocus and daffodil shoots - Spring is on it’s way. February is a big celebration month as mum has a milestone birthday and there has been lot’s of planning going on. The girl’s in the family there are quite a few of us - are off to see Calendar Girls the Musical with a cheeky pre-theatre dinner at Poldinos - we won’t be too rowdy Leo! Interestingly we have three pairs of tickets up for grabs to see A Midsummer Night’s Dream in March - so head to the centre pages and take a moment to submit your answer - I look forward to hearing from you. So what’s new with you? Holiday’s booked? Exam nerves kicking in? Taken up a new hobby? Stuck to your New Year resolution? Do let us know, we’d love to hear from you. We might even print some letters/emails... Anyway - until April,

Kingswells Primary School News Kingswells School Community Digital Drop In
SCIENCE CLUB
We were delighted by the success of our Digital Drop In last term. Pupils from our ‘Tech Team’ helped senior citizens with various digital issues from sending messages to editing photos and navigating on Google Maps.
Science Club is a lunchtime club that encourages us to learn about science in a fun way. It runs on a Thursday lunch time between 1pm and 1.45pm. Most people go every week but you can go as often as you want to.
We would now like to extend this invitation to people of all ages in our community. This is an opportunity to learn some new skills or just to have some fun with the children and technology. For most of our pupils this is their first opportunity to share their skills with adults so you can help them to develop their confidence and communication skills. If you would like to join us at our next session please come along on the first Tuesday of the month during term time, from 2pm to 3pm. We would love to see you. We can provide the technology or you can bring along your own.
The club is for P6 pupils and a small group of us go every week. It is organised and run by Katya and Anju. Katia is a physicist and Anju is a parent helper. They are both very helpful and make each week different and exciting. Katya encourages us to make a hypothesis. This is where we try and guess the outcome of the experiment before it happens.
Upcoming Events at Kingswell School Kingswells School are planning to celebrate 25 years in our current school by looking back at school days over the years and the history of Kingswells. We plan to hold an open event in June and would love to display photos and stories of the past both in our current school, the previous Kingswells School and of the community of Kingswells. If you have any photos or stories which you would be willing to share with us please get in touch with Kingswells School on 01224 740262. Any contributions would be greatly appreciated.
We have learned lots in science club. Some of our favourite topics have been, atoms and molecules, pressure and the water cycle. One of our favourite experiments was looking at changes in pressure. We had a 2 litre bottle with 3 holes in it. One at the top, one in the middle and one at the bottom. There was also a cap on the bottle. When the cap was on, the the water ran out slowly. We found that the cap was stopping the air pressure from pushing the water out quickly. We liked this experiment because it was interesting to see the differences in water flow when the cap was on or off. We would encourage anyone that likes science to come along. You never know but you could find a new hobby and have great fun . By Dylan Flood P6EW and Jack Wilson P6HC

They can help you to improve your skills on your tablet, laptop or smartphone or just spend time playing fun apps with you! You can help them to improve their communication, teaching skills and confidence. Sessions are at Kingswells School on the first Tuesday of every month from 2pm to 3pm and are free. Our next session is on Tuesday 5th March from 2pm to 3pm.
We look forward to seeing you. Bring along your own devices or use one of ours. 8

Readers are reminded that a full account of Community Council business and other local and Aberdeen news is available on our website at http://www.kwells.org
Note from the Chairman of Kingswells Community Council. Happy New Year to you all! We thought as your new and recently formed Community Council this would be an excellent time to provide an overview of the role it undertakes on behalf of city and residents. The Community Council’s role, as the most local tier of statutory representation, is to bridge the gap between Aberdeen City Council and Kingswells, helping to make various public bodies aware of the opinions and needs of our community. We are all local residents who give time voluntarily to support the needs of the community. Aberdeen City has statutory oversight of our council and members and we are all bound by a strict code of conduct which governs ethics, standard operating procedures and most importantly how we should be representing and engaging with the community. Aberdeen City council is required by statute to consult with us on planning applications and licencing matters which in turn enables us to make the community aware of any impact and ascertain their feedback and comments. In the coming weeks and months, you are likely to see several changes as we strive to be more visible and engage with more of the community. The council meet formally every month and residents are welcome to come along to meet us from 7-7.30pm before the main meeting starts. We also intend to revamp our website, social media footprints and promote other forms of communication e.g. the noticeboard outside the community centre. So, notwithstanding our ambitions to increase engagement and visibility, we can only be successful if you continue to support, communicate, feedback and work with us. In the meantime, please bear with us during this period of change and we look forward to keeping you updated of our plans and any developments. Regards Russell Ritchie

Other news…. Recycling Bins at the Park & Ride Its recently been reported to the city council about the mess around the recycling bins at the Kingswells Park & Ride. This has been an ongoing issue and one that is regularly reported to the City council. However, its apparent from the following photographs that it is also being used as a dumping ground for waste that should be disposed of at a recycling centre e.g. Hazlehead, Bucksburn or Westhill. However there are issues with weather and the site is exposed on all sides therefore many of the items which have not been responsibility disposed of in the bins provided often get blown about. Please note that bins are only emptied on a fortnightly basis by the council. NB Just before submitting this article we were informed that the council was likely going to remove the recycling bins permanently in April due to these ongoing issues and budget constraints.

their say in these proposed development plans which will be coming up for consultation in January 2019.
The KCC intend to approach the head of waste management to ascertain what other (if any) viable alternatives are available to their permanent removal. We will keep you further updated.
Kingswells has 21 potential development sites identified all of which can be viewed through the following link https://kwells. org/LDP Therefore, its vital that you present your views to the ACC who will take these into consideration when making planning decisions. Please don’t assume others will do it for you, this is your window of opportunity to have oversight and influence over the proposed development plans that will impact Kingswells.
Christmas Tree KCC would like to also extend a public thanks to Graeme Thom and his team of helpers for erecting the Christmas tree outside the shops. It’s a great centre piece for the village and many residents commented on its bright display of lights and glitter. It’s worth mentioning that we are only able to undertake activities like these through the generosity of our volunteers and sponsors. So big thanks to Graeme, and all the volunteers who have supported the community council in the last year.
Map of Proposed Development Sites We will continue to update the website with new information as it becomes available including the dates for your submissions and some information to include in your submissions. So please keep looking for these updates at https://kwells.org/LDP

Kippie Lodge launches Easter teen camps to help keep youngsters active and happy Juggling school, studies, friends and console games can be time consuming, and as a result activity levels drop dramatically once youngsters reach adolescence. Just a third of kids in Scotland aged 5-15 meet the government guideline of a minimum of 60 minutes of activity per
day, and as soon as they hit secondary school, young people’s participation in sports drops off dramatically. Whether it’s embarrassment about changing bodies or peer pressure, our young people start to develop unhealthy lifestyles at a young age. As well as helping to build strong bones and muscles, taking part in sport helps posture – something many young people who spend a lot of time at a desk or in front of a computer screen can struggle with. Taking part in an exercise class or being part of a team helps to improve concentration and memory, as well as building problem solving skills and selfcontrol. Mental health problems amongst young people have been well documented, and exercise has an immediate and longterm benefit on self-esteem and happiness – it’s not just the endorphins that are

released during intensive activity, it’s about improving your body and developing your mind. Exercise is good for exam results too! Aerobic exercise is known to improve the performance of the pre-frontal cortex – the part of the brain responsible for problem solving, self-control, judgement and memory. Inactive teens are likely to become inactive adults, so if you want to do your best to help your children grow up to be strong and healthy, encouraging them to do more activity is one of the best things you can do. Hot on the heels of their acclaimed pantomime, “Jack and the Beanstalk”, at Aberdeen Arts Centre, Aberdeen based, Ten Feet Tall Theatre are back in production for their next show, the wonderful Shakespeare comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. Again partnering with the Arts Centre, this production of, probably people’s favourite Shakespeare comedy, promises to again carry the company’s “Made in Aberdeen” stamp of quality.

Kingswells Community Centre The Community Centre 2018 Christmas Party was a great success. The event was sold out and Un1que Disco, KidSize and SillySnapz Photobooth did a fantastic job of keeping everyone entertained. A big thank you to everyone involved including Santa who dropped in to give away presents. The date for your diary this year is Saturday 7th December. In each issue of the Kingswells Community News we want to focus on the activities that run in the centres and the people behind them that make them happen.
18 Years of Alison’s Football 18 years ago Alison McLeod After School Football started at Kingswells Community Centre. At first there were only P1-3 classes, but soon afterwards I became the first person to run pre-school football in Aberdeen. The fees were obviously a lot less - £1 a session!! The main difference now is of course social media. Very few people phone to book places, it’s all either Facebook or email. Also, when I first started I took one photo of the children at the end of the year and now I take a couple of videos a term. It is also a lot easier to have contact with parents – 18 years ago we just had the house phone!
At Kidsize, we run an Out of School Club for pupils of Kingswells Primary and a Holiday Club at Kingswells Community Centre. Our ethos is to “Have Fun, Make Friends, Learn More” and we ensure that all this is achieved at every club. At Kidsize we do lots of different activities every day from science and inventions to singing and dancing. Our holiday clubs always have a unique and exciting theme. In the last couple of years we have had some super cool days at our holiday club such as “I’m a Kidsizer, Get Me Out of Here!” and “Around the World in One Day”. Throughout the year we also run several drop off events on weekends and evenings such as our Valentine’s PJ Party, Shorts N’ Shades Disco and Christmas Drop Off day. Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon & Chives Prep: 15 mins Cook: 20 mins Serves: 4 (or 2 really hungry people!) Ingredients 4 eggs 2 tbsp white wine vinegar 2 English muffins or two bagels, halved Butter for spreading 8 slices smoked salmon Chopped chives, to serve For the hollandaise sauce 2 tsp lemon juice 2 tsp white wine vinegar 3 egg yolks 125g unsalted butter, cubed
and continue to whisk until the mixture thickens. Add the butter a small amount at a time, whisking constantly until the sauce is thick. If it looks like it might be splitting, remove from the heat and continue to whisk. Season with salt and pepper then and keep warm. Poached eggs: bring a large pan of water to the boil and add the vinegar. Lower the heat so that the water simmers very gently. Stir the water a little so you create a gentle whirlpool effect, then slide in the eggs one by one. Cook each for about 4 mins, then remove with a slotted spoon. Handy hint - you will see the eggs begin to rise in the water as they reach completion. Lightly toast and butter the muffins or bagels, then place a couple of slices of the smoked salmon on each half. Top each with an egg, then spoon over your Hollandaise and garnish with chopped chives.
Method Hollandaise Sauce: Pour the lemon juice and vinegar into a small bowl, add the egg yolks and whisk with a balloon whisk until light and frothy. Place the bowl over a pan of simmering water

5-HTP Supplements and Mental Health 5-HTP has become a more popular supplement lately. It’s made from tryptophan, which your body converts into serotonin. In theory, it may help with conditions linked to low serotonin levels. Are 5-HTP supplements actually proven to have positive effects on health and wellbeing? Some studies have indicated that 5-HTP can improve depression symptoms. One study showed good potential for using 5-HTP to help to treat depression that isn’t responsive to SSRI and SNRI medications. 5-HTP has also been researched for its effects on other areas of mental and physical health. There have been some positive findings from these studies. In a study on insomnia, a combination of 5-HTP and GABA helped people to fall asleep more quickly. For fibromyalgia,
pain levels can potentially be improved if 5-HTP is taken alongside other medications. Other areas have been more mixed, with 5-HTP helping to treat tension headaches and migraines in some studies but not others. There is another option for increasing serotonin levels naturally… hypnotherapy! During hypnosis, a deep sense of relaxation is achieved. This sets the scene for serotonin and dopamine to be produced and can continue after you’ve left the session. And as positive changes happen serotonin is produced, even small changes count! You can also boost serotonin levels through exercise, diet, exposure to natural light and getting a massage. Contact me today to find out more about how Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can support you to increase your serotonin levels naturally. Sam Luxford

News from Councillor Cameron... Here we are 2019 already, where did 2018 go? Perhaps time does seem to pass more quickly as you get older, but this is ridiculous! The last few months have seen several long-term projects in Aberdeen coming to fruition and during 2019 there are several more scheduled to be completed. The Music Hall eventually reopened its doors to the public in December 2018 after an extensive and time-consuming refurbishment. This is a welcome additional versatile venue back in use in Aberdeen which hopefully will host

exciting events for the citizens of Aberdeen to enjoy. More significant specifically to Kingswells must be the opening, albeit partial, of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route now designated as the A90. With the stretch from Stonehaven to Craibstone now operational this has had a beneficial effect on Kingswells. I recently used the road for the first time to travel from Culter to Kingswells and was pleasantly surprised by how easy and how quickly I was able to make the journey. Additionally, journey times to and from Kingswells via

the A944 have shorten as the volume of traffic appears to have been distributed between the A90 and the A944. We should see further improvements in our journey times as the remainder of the A90 is opened when the bridge over the River Don at Dyce is completed. This development has been a long time coming and certainly overdue. Since I was elected to represent Kingswells, Sheddocksley and Summerhill in 2012 the volume of traffic on the A944 between Aberdeen centre and Kingswells has been steadily

increasing. In part this is due to the increase in residential house building in Kingswells but also as the result of the newly constructed business premises in Westhill and the continuing development of Prime4. The announcement by Stagecoach of two new bus services on the AWPR should increase the public transport offering for the residents of Kingswells. After the last 18 months any little improvement in public transport links to and from Kingswells is to be welcomed. Of particular value will be the 747 service which connects Montrose, Stonehaven, Kingswells P&R and Ellon P&R
with Aberdeen Airport. The link to Ellon P&R allowing onward journeys to Peterhead and Fraserburgh. This is an hourly service which was launched on 21st January 2019. In mid-2019 the new Exhibition Centre (TECA – The Exhibition and Conference Arena) should be completed and opened on the site previously occupied by the world renowned Rowett Research Institute. The proximity of this site to Kingswells potentially could have had major implications for Kingswells in respect of traffic congestion. The opening of the AWPR is certainly a major step towards
being able to handle extra traffic generated by TECA without undue pressure on the Newhills to Kingswells road. I would like to wish you and your families a happy and healthy 2019 and hopefully we will not have too severe a winter.

News from Councillor Delaney... Never was the phrase “a week is a long time in politics” so apt as the week when this column was written. It was the week when parliamentarians of different political persuasions came together to vote down a deal that neither side of the Brexit debate was happy with, and all for very different reasons. I fear the chaos which has arisen from the uncharted waters we now find ourselves in may be no closer to resolution by the time you read this. Holding strong beliefs and being willing to enter into discussion to promote and defend your views is healthy in a democratic society. I have had many a debate with friends who hold strong views on both sides of this divide and I have been fortunate enough that these exchanges have been respectful as we would each defend the other’s right to express those differing views, without necessarily agreeing with them! Unfortunately not everyone is of that mindset. Whatever the eventual outcome of Brexit, a large proportion of our population is going to feel disenfranchised, ignored and angry. Free speech is vital to our democracy and to our way of life but it comes with responsibilities too. In the coming weeks and
26
months we all need to be more sensitive towards each other’s genuinely held views, especially with those closest to us, otherwise there’s a real risk that relationships between family and friends could face irreparable damage. Moving back to more local matters, I’m pleased to say that good progress has been made with long running street lighting issues. There are still a few outstanding faults being worked through but the backlog is clearing and new faults are now being fixed much quicker than they had been in recent months. Please continue to report these by telephone or online to the council in the first instance and remember to let me know of any which remain unresolved. At the time of writing I have had no complaints about the No 14 bus (touch wood!) and the new service appears to be much more reliable, certainly at the times when I have used it, which tended to be off peak. Residents have put up with unacceptably poor service in recent years (from three different bus companies) and I am hopeful things have now settled down. Please continue to inform the Public Transport Unit at publictransport@ aberdeencity.gov.uk or on 01224 523073 of any concerns you may have as they continue
to monitor compliance with the contact on an ongoing basis. On a different note, I would like to thank residents for their interest in my proposal to carry out a trial of “plastic roads” in Aberdeen. These are roads which have some of the bitumen in the asphalt road mix replaced with recycled plastic pellets to create a more durable road surface which should be less susceptible to potholes and should last longer. The technology is not new but this latest implementation of it is. I had previously asked the council to look at the latest developments in this technology and consider carrying out a trial of the product in Aberdeen. If indeed it’s as good as it’s said to be, it could save a lot of money in respect of future road repairs and road resurfacing and we would reap the benefits of driving on better quality roads. This is something I’ve been enthused about, whilst acknowledging we need more evidence as to its promised benefits and indeed of its environmental credentials. A report came to committee in January and I put forward proposals to continue to monitor trials elsewhere and to work with our asphalt suppliers
Check out our website www.gazettemagazines.com
to deliver the product locally provided we could obtain sufficient evidence of durability and longevity of the product. Following some cross party discussion, these elements of my proposal were accepted by all.
by email or telephone and I hold regular surgeries at Kingswells Community Centre. Please check out the local press or my website for details. Regards Steve Delaney
I had also been keen to try to secure a trial of the product in Aberdeen at no cost to the council, and I wanted a strict time limit for a further report coming back outlining progress, but I was willing to drop these elements in order to reach a consensus.

Get Active to Fight Parkinson’s Disease! Exercise is medicine for people with Parkinson’s Disease. Recent evidence shows that treating people as soon as possible after diagnosis is very effective in improving quality of life, mobility and confidence. However it also has the potential to slow progression of the condition. This is something that, at present, no traditional medication can offer. What is Parkinson’s disease? Parkinson disease affects around 1 in 500 people in the UK with the average onset of the condition at 50 years old. It affects a part of the brain called the substania nigra. Because of nerve cell loss this area it is not able to produce enough of the chemical dopamine. Dopamine is responsible for regulating movement in the body. How might it affect me? To begin with symptoms may be very mild. This is a great time to start exercising. Over time, common physical symptoms include tremor, slow movements and stiff, inflexible muscles. This can affect many aspects of daily life and may lead to a shuffling walking pattern, flexed posture, reduced balance or reduced function in an arm or hand. What can I do about it? Get active as early as you can! See an exercise professional such as a neuro physiotherapist with experience of treating PD. You need to learn what type of exercise to do and develop good, sustainable habits. You also need to ensure you are on an optimal dose of medication so make sure you see your Consultant, GP or PD Nurse
about this. Being on the right medication can help you get the most benefit out of your exercise sessions so this is really important. Exercise - what is the evidence? Research has proven that directed physical activity can improve walking ability, hand dexterity, balance, speed of movements and overall fitness levels. One study also found that a specific exercise programme not only reduced symptoms but also indicated that the progression of the disease had slowed down reducing levels of medication required over time. This study also noted that a sedentary lifestyle worsened those symptoms that effect Parkinson disease suffers which then lead to other symptoms such as depression and fatigue. What is Neurological Physiotherapy or “Neuro Physio”? Neuro Physio's are experts in treating clients with neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s, and have a clear understanding on how Parkinson’s affects people. Treatment is focused on the individual; to improve their capabilities and to maximise their functional abilities. Physiotherapy isn’t easy and should always be a challenge. Your physiotherapist should aim to challenge you to maximise your rehabilitation potential. However tough your therapy may be it should also be fun and rewarding! Summary Exercise can help you take control of and manage your symptoms. Research suggests that specific exercises can help slow the progression of the disease.
