Walking and Smiling Depression Have you heard of walking depression? With this type of depression, you’ll seem normal (and sometimes happy) on the outside but inside, you’re really struggling. Because you’re able to carry on living life and are not confined to bed or bursting into tears regularly, a lot of people won’t even realise you have depression. And sometimes, people themselves don’t acknowledge that they’re actually depressed, often because there’s a high level of day-to-day functioning. A lot of the symptoms of walking and smiling depression are much the same as depression in general. You might feel very negative, down, anxious, lacking in energy, fearful, irritable, hopeless or even suicidal. Struggling to focus, feeling that something is missing from your

life or not enjoying things anymore are also common. The main difference to “traditional” depression is that symptoms don’t interfere with day-to-day life as much. Talking therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) are often used to treat walking depression. Hypnotherapy can work alongside them too and is now recognised as one of the most effective interventions for depression and anxiety. One of the great things about hypnotherapy is that in accessing the unconscious mind, it can help to treat the underlying causes of depression and replace them with more positive alternatives. We are hoping Santa brings us a “mantle” so that we can then hang our stockings next year - the letter has been put up the chimney in anticipation. In the meantime we’ll put out the biscuits and dram and hope the dogs don’t snaffle them. Speaking of dogs/pets - please do keep your chocolate decorations up high on the tree - chocolate is not good for pets.

Kingswells Primary School News Aberdeen Deeside Rotary Club Public Speaking Competition 2018 Once again the Rotary Club of Aberdeen Deeside hosted the 2018 Primary Schools Public Speaking Competition at Milltimber Primary School, Aberdeen. Eighteen Primary 7 students from 5 local primary schools took part in the competition. We had a choice from three topics to present about. The three topics were: Plastic- do we need it? Is it beneficial for a family to have a pet? What impact will robots have in our lives? Since only four pupils from each school were allowed to go and more of us wanted to participate we had to do a mini audition first. The final four chosen were Rusha, Vinayak, Cassidy and myself. This year it was a good mix as all of had chosen different topics. We had around a week and a half to prepare and then the day came. It was a bit stressful because I chose to say my speech off by heart and also because I was last, but I guess being last had its good bits! Another thing that I think we all found challenging was the fact that we only had three minutes to talk, if it was under three minutes we would be penalised and if it was over three minutes thirty we would not be penalised but points would have been taken off.

shield for their school. The judgement was over and it turned out that it was me who won first place! I felt a mix of emotions such as overjoyed, proud and ecstatic. I got to hold the shield and that was an amazing moment. They gave us the trophy later (after my name was engraved on it) and now it will be kept in the school’s trophy cabinet. It was awesome representing our school and winning the trophy and I wish all the very best to next year’s P7s and I hope the trophy will come back to us again! [By Angel George]

P7 Kingswells Football Tournament

After what was quicker than a blink my turn came. Luckily nothing went wrong and I didn’t forget anything. I have to say that the hardest bit for me was the fact that a bell rang at two minutes thirty and then again at three minutes.

The Kingswells football team had a football tournament at Garioch sports centre in Inverurie on Tuesday 6th November. Our coaches drove us there and we played four matches. In our first match we won one-nil. The next one was two-nil to Cornhill and then we lost four-nil to Elrick. Our final match was against Peterhead and we won two-nil. The day was a lot of fun and we learned more about how to play competitively and work well as a team. We look forward to the next tournament.

Free ‘Learn to Sing’ Course – with The Granite City Chorus is made up of men of all ages that have one thing in common - they all love to sing! Most of us, the writer included, started off merely by wondering if they could actually sing or looking for someone to teach them. It is hard to describe the feel good factor that comes from singing in a polished yet relaxed environment and it is widely acknowledged that singing is good for you both physically and mentally. But you don’t have to take my word for it! Our “Learn to Sing” course starts on Tuesday 22nd January 2019 at 7pm and runs for 4 consecutive Tuesdays. It is open to all males, it is free and no experience or musical knowledge is required. The course is held in Woodside Parish Church Hall, 46 Church St, Aberdeen AB24 4DQ and you can be assured of a warm and friendly reception from the guys. Our Music Director and experienced singers will teach you everything you need to sing and perform as a chorus singer. There is no obligation other than to enjoy the 4-week experience and you may choose to do no more than learn to sing or to move on to other singing groups. However, most of our chorus started with this course in previous years and stayed on to sing in the four-part harmony a cappella style. We perform at various venues throughout the year, usually charity or civic events although we do private and corporate engagements also. We have a wide repertoire of songs and the standard of coaching and rehearsal is top class whilst we never lose sight of the social side and the pure uplifting fun of it. Note also that we rehearse at Woodside every Tuesday at 7pm, feel free to walk in any Tuesday and see for yourself, you will be made very welcome. So, Learn to Sing, enroll now!

Kingswells Community Council is pleased to announce the installation of the first publicly accessible defibrillator at the Kingswells Pharmacy. We would like to thank all who were involved in the project. Special thanks to Pamela at the pharmacy for taking on responsibility for overseeing this going forward. We understand that other organisations in Kingswells are at various stages making other defibrillators available for public access. Kingswells Community Council plan to hold various training sessions for residents on CPR and the use of the defibrillator in the coming weeks and months. Training will be performed by the Scottish Ambulance Service in blocks of 12 volunteers. We invite all Kingswells residents to take advantage in acquiring this life-giving skill. You never know when you may need to save a life of a family member, friend, or perfect stranger. The first training session took place in October, and we plan to hold more as demand dictates. Please see the attached poster for details on registering your interest. Training sessions normally take around 90 minutes.

Development Plan November 2018 The development plan is coming up for consultation in January 2019. The developer bids for sites around Kingswells are published on the ACC website and can be reviewed prior to the consultation. ACC will assess each site and present their views in the Main Issues Report which will form part of the consultation in January. Kingswells has 21 potential development sites identified which are marked on the attached plan. This does not mean that Kingswells will be smothered in development, this is merely a developers’ wish list. ACC will be seeking your views, to identify the best sites for development, if any at all. The actual requirement will depend on the housing needs identified by ACC. Details of the various development sites can be found at https://kwells.org/LDP

Consultation Kingswells Community Council would like your opinion on the various development sites. So please let us know using any of the links shown on https://kwells.org/LDP or email LDP@kwells.org

The Long Awaited 5th Bench

At last !!! KCC are pleased to announce that the long-awaited bench at Concraig should be installed by the time this newsletter is published.

Check out our website www.gazettemagazines.com

Prime Four contributed a bench to replace the one that McAlpine’s were to install with the other four benches they generously donated and installed for Kingswells residents a while ago. Unfortunately, they left site before completing the 5th bench. We made an application to the Prime Four Trust and were successful in securing funding to cover the cost of installation. Thanks to all involved and Prime Four for making the completion of this project possible.

Co-op Local Community Fund

The Co-op Local Community Fund helps to support local projects that Co-op members care about. Since its launch in 2017, Co-op members have raised £39 million pounds for over 12,000 local causes. We’re delighted that Kingswells Community Council Initiative will now be able to access this funding opportunity. How the fund works Every time Co-op members shop at the Co-op, 1% of what they spend on Co-op branded products and services helps fund community projects. Members can shop at any Co-op Group stores across the UK to raise money for the KCC cause. Members can choose which causes to support by signing into their membership account or by calling the membership helpline on 0800 023 4708.

Every cause has a page on the membership website. This includes information about the KCC cause and the project that we want to complete. To encourage members to support your project, share the following link on social media: https://membership.coop.co.uk/causes/31004

Foo’s your poo’s!

Kingswells is a lovely place to live, set in the suburbs, surrounded by lush green countryside, woodland and wide-open spaces it’s a haven for everyone especially our 4-legged canine friends. However, despite the abundance of dog and general waste bins there are still a minority of dog owners or walkers who do not pick up after their little buddies! Or worse still bag it and leave it on the ground…. If you walk your dog off the lead, then please ensure that you’re always aware of where they are and what they are doing. Several complaints have been made about the abundance of dog mess on grass verges, pathways and pavements in the last few months so please pick up after your pooch, not only is it a criminal offence it’s your responsibility to help keep the community safe and Kingswells beautiful.

So, please pick up, bag and bin it! Wellside Wynd Park Wellside Wynd park is being completely refurbished with new equipment hopefully being completed before Christmas. This park is extremely popular with lots of local children of all ages however the council are not replacing the fencing around the outside area which is of concern to some parents who have contacted KCC. We will monitor the concerns once the park has been completed and feedback any concerns. Looking to advertise ? Call Sue t : 01383 279 355

Fitness Yoga Yoga is a specialist programme at Fitness Her Way. Love yoga or not, its effects are so good, other programmes use the exercises too. Joseph Pilates used a mix of yoga and gymnastics to build his unique brand. At Fitness Her Way, like Joseph Pilates, yoga is a fitness tool. Our unique programme uses some traditional sequencing such as Sun Salutation, as a warm up. The programme progresses to use strengthening exercises for the legs; standing balance work; floor exercises for mobility and a relaxation time to help you unwind. All of this is done under the instructor’s watchful eye to get the alignment and positions correct. When you get the right alignment in yoga it is hugely beneficial to individuals. In our small friendly classes we ensure that everyone is in the right alignment when exercising. During a time of change for women, such as menopause, we feel the need to be active, but wish to be mindful that exercising incorrectly can be less than beneficial. Body alignment is crucial at this time of life. We recommend our Fitness Yoga programme. It builds strength and suppleness; enhances concentration and calms the mind. One major benefit of yoga is balance. Our unique fitness yoga, balances your body, as you may be stronger on one side of your body compared to the other. It enhances our ability to balance when walking for a smooth gait. Yoga balances our concentration, which reduces as we age and then quietens our mind with the relaxation at the end of class.

12

There is a strong relationship between advancing age and declining balance. Eyes open balance stays in the 40s range until age 50 then begins to drop by about 10 seconds for each decade after 60. Eyes closed balance is a third of the duration of eyes open balance and drops by about 4 seconds each decade after age 50. The average of 15 seconds with eyes closed for 18-39 year old. How is your balance? Can you balance better on one leg compared to the other? Do you lose your concentration to balance for any length of time? Give our Fitness Yoga a try. Connect with us on Social Media to see our latest news and offers.

The Perfect Cheeseboard How much cheese? - Allow about 100g-125g (3½-4oz) cheese per person if your cheeseboard is being served after a meal, or slightly more - 150g (5oz) per person if you’re serving it as a snack/light meal. Which cheese? - Three or four cheeses is enough – more than that and there’s too much for the palate to enjoy. The cheeses should be different styles, textures and flavours. Cheddar, Stilton and Brie is a classic combination, as it mixes a hard, soft and a blue. Why not go totally British with a traditional West Country Farmhouse Cheddar matched with Cropwell Bishop, a wonderful robust blue, and maybe Bath Soft Cheese, which is gorgeously gooey and mushroomy in flavour. It’s nice to put one wild-card cheese on the board like a citrussy goat’s cheese or meaty smoked cheese like St James. Crackers - A good oat biscuit, cracker or artisan bread will complement the cheese. Add a chutney look for unusual brands at farmers’ markets, and some ...in Little Belmont Street apples or grapes.

Recovery from Stroke or “Brain Attack” What is a stroke? A stroke is a “Brain Attack”. It is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off. Most strokes are caused by a blockage however some can be caused by bleeding in or around the brain. The severity of the symptoms depends on the size of the area of the brain affected, and how long the circulation has been interrupted for. A stroke can affect the way your body works as well as how you think, feel and communicate. It commonly affects one side of the body leaving a weak or numb arm and leg. It’s vital to know how to spot the warning signs of a stroke in yourself or someone else. Using the FAST test is the best way to do this. • Face: Can the person smile? Has their face fallen on one side?

20

• Arms: Can the person raise both arms and keep them there? • Speech problems: Can the person speak clearly and understand what you say? Is their speech slurred? • Time: If you see any of these three signs, it’s time to call 999.

(Stroke Association, 2018)

Can you recover from a stroke? People who survive a stroke are often left with long-term problems caused by injury to their brain. Some people need a long period of rehabilitation before they can recover their former independence, while many never fully recover and need support adjusting to living with the effects of their stroke. Recovery can occur in two main ways: In the first few weeks or months after stroke, spontaneous recovery can occur as swelling reduce and the body’s normal healing processes continue. Thereafter further improvement can be explained by neuroplasticity. This is the brains

ability to adapt and compensate for damage by establishing new pathways that can help restore function. Neurological Physiotherapy or “Neuro Physio” A specialist neurological physiotherapist or “neuro physio” is an expert in helping people recover more normal movement and function after neurological injury or disease. They will understand the common problems encountered and the impact that they can have on the life of you and your family. Treatment is focused on maximising the return of movement and encouraging as much independence as possible. A neuro physio will use the principles of neuroplasticity to guide treatment. The research tells us how we should structure exercise based therapy in terms of intensity, frequency and type of exercise. Feeding a Crowd at Christmas Whether it’s the gradual increase in food prices over the past year, or your desire to cut back on food waste, there has never been more incentive not to over cater at Christmas. But just how do you work out how much food and drink you need when you’re feeding far more people than usual? We’ve come to the rescue. Turkey - Allow approximately 500g per person. This doesn’t mean that you’ll get 500g of meat each, simply that to get a good portion size you need to allow this much turkey-weight per person. So, if you want to feed 8 adults your turkey should be at least 4Kg, more if you want leftovers. Roast beef or pork - If the joint is off the bone, allow 250g per serving – so 2kg for eight people. Allow 350g per serving for roasts on the bone – so around 3kg for eight. Roasties - Everyone loves roasties! Allow 250g of potatoes per person, so 2kg for eight people. Stuffing - You need to allow 100g of stuffing per person, so that’s at least 800g for eight people! With stuffing it’s better to have more

than run-out, and it’s great on turkey sandwiches later! Sprouts - Unless you are a sprout-lover allow 80g per person – or 650g for eight people. If you do have any leftover they go great in bubble and squeak for boxing day brunch. Carrots and other roast or steamed veg - 80g-100g is about right for any serving of vegetables, so you need 800g combined for eight people. I allow more because lots my family are vegetarian. Gravy - 125ml per person is enough for a normal family, but if your relatives are like mine and treat gravy as a food group then allow double. You can always freeze leftovers for an easy addition to midweek suppers. Cranberry Sauce - At least 50g per person. I’m sure I eat more than that though! Bread Sauce - 75ml seems to suffice because not everyone likes it, but those that do LOVE it. Around 600-700ml is usually enough. Christmas Pudding - A 900g pudding will be plenty to feed eight. Custard - Treat it like gravy. 125ml per person unless your family are the type that can’t stop pouring! Unfortunately, there isn’t one shopping list to suit all families, but this is a good basic guide; adapt it to suit your own catering preferences. Happy feasting! By Tracey Anderson

Christmas with Autism My oldest son has a diagnosis of High Functioning Autism (what used to be called Asperger Syndrome). When he was younger Christmas nearly tipped both of us over the edge. Even without autism Christmas can be a special kind of hell, but if you’re the parent of an autistic child, or a child with sensory issues, Christmas can come with a super-sized side-serving of stress and meltdowns. Autistic kids often find comfort in routine. Christmas means change: decorations, Christmas music, crowds, balloons, pop-up markets

and parades, disruption to the normal school timetable. There’s a lot of potential for upset. Identify possible changes and pre-warn your child. It can be helpful to show them photos or create a social story to help them understand the sequence of events and what will be expected of them. If your autistic child is old enough and / or verbal enough, involve them in planning which events they want to be part of, and which events they’d prefer to skip. For events they can’t avoid, what will help? A fidget toy? Noisecancelling headphones? This

A visual method for counting down to Christmas is useful. My son found a chocolate advent calendar too stressful, so we found a fabric one where a Christmas-themed item is added each day with the use of Velcro. Simple but effective.

that wrapping was part of our Christmas to each other and it was important for us. We felt it was good for him to see that sometimes he needed to compromise too. Discuss the Christmas Day schedule in advance. Who will arrive, when and how they should be greeted. Some kids (even those without ASD) hate hugging relatives so prewarn guests if this is an issue. It might be prudent to go through the etiquette for receiving a gift too. We explained to our son that if we don’t like a gift we should still say thank you to show our appreciation of the thought. Be prepared for the odd slipup! On receiving a scratchy woollen scarf from his Aunty

one year he glanced at me and asked, “Do I thank her for the thought even if it was about how to make my neck as itchy as possible?” which left me smiling weakly at my bemused sister-in-law. Finally, if they don’t want to eat the Christmas food and would rather have a sandwich, or a pizza, let them. It’s a small thing, don’t sweat it. In the grand scheme of things it’s not important. And things

change. My fifteen-year-old autistic son now tucks in with the rest of us but for three years between the ages of four and seven he ate cheese on toast for Christmas lunch (because that’s what he ate for lunch every day!). We look back now and smile fondly at the memory. Merry Christmas. By Alison Foster

News from Councillor Delaney... As we head towards the year end, it’s a time to reflect on the last twelve months … but on this occasion I’m going to look back a century to the end of WWI, which was fresh in my mind as I wrote this column. It was described as the “Great War” and the “war to end all wars” and neither could have been further from the truth. The pain, suffering and loss of millions of lives worldwide, hundreds of thousands of them British, not to mention the women left at home to pick up the pieces, is incomprehensible. Numbers so large they become difficult to relate to. The Armistice Centenary presented an opportunity to offer our respects to those who gave their lives to protect our freedoms and our way of life, but also to celebrate and promote the virtues of peace. The city centre commemoration event was attended by hundreds of local people and the armed forces were applauded as they left. Later in the day the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints staged a production titled, “Voices from the Great War” which told the stories of real Aberdonians and their families, leaving everyone visibly moved. We must ensure that future generations never forget those who lost their lives in conflict but equally important is the continual need to strive for

26

peace which is, after all, what they all fought for. Now onto something a bit more positive, I hope... Bus passenger numbers are up (from the No 94 shuttle bus to the current No 14 service) despite problems with timekeeping, which can only be good for the longer term future of public transport in Kingswells. The new bus timetable and the Sunday bus service will have been operating for two or three weeks by the time you read this. The previous timetable was just too tight, resulting in buses running later and later as the day progressed. Building in extra time should help to avoid this, but it does mean that buses may have to wait for a few minutes at timing points if they end up running early. I would appreciate if you could continue to report any instances of late or missing buses to the Public Transport Unit at publictransport@ aberdeencity.gov.uk or on 01224 523073. With your help they can continue to monitor Stagecoach’s performance and initiate improvements if the service falls short. It’s the only way to ensure we get a timely, reliable bus service in Kingswells. On a different matter, the right turn performed by the X17 into the P&R from the C89C two or three times a day was causing

much concern as the bus was cutting across the lane intended for vehicles turning right into Kingswood Drive from the C89C. I’ve raised this in the past and now received assurances that it will cease, so hopefully that’s an end to it. Otherwise please let me know. On another positive note I welcome the election of 12 community councillors to represent the area. All positions were filled but the number of applicants did not exceed the number of places so there was no need for an election. Half of their number are completely new to the role, so it’s a good mix of people with trusted experience and others with fresh ideas. Community council membership is unpaid and a motivated community council can represent local views effectively and contribute much to the well being of their local community. I therefore wish the new Kingswells Community Council well and I would also like to express my thanks, and I’m sure yours too, to those who served from 2015, including those who chose not to stand at this election. Every year we find non-working street lights seem to increase over the winter, just when we need them to be working! Unfortunately this year’s been no different with a lot

of problems relating to street lights which were reported to the council on several occasions over weeks or months still unresolved. I raised this at committee recently and have been following through with senior officials. Please continue to report these to the council in the first instance but let me know if there’s no progress after two or three weeks so I can chase things up.
