Kingswells Primary School News iBike
Kingswells School have recently become involved in iBike which is a schools project promoting cycling, walking and scooting run by SUSTRANS. Our SfL teacher, Mr McCormick has been involved in this in previous schools and it has been very successful. We will had our first Bike Breakfast on Friday 28th September for P6 and P7 and it was very well attended. Officers from iBike provided a buffet style healthy breakfasts in the school gym hall complete with smoothies made from pedal power! Parents, pupils and their siblings were invited to cycle/walk/scoot to school and were given a free breakfast between 8am and 8.45 am. We plan to do breakfasts for the other year groups too which I am sure will also be a great success. In the future we hope to add a bike workshop on to the breakfasts (Dr Bike) where pupils can have their bikes checked and fixed if possible. Mr McCormick and the iBike Officers also led the first ibike cycle for P5 and P7 on Thursday 27th September. It went well despite the weather, we did have a few soggy teachers, pupils and parents though! We hope to repeat this event next term.
Digital Drop In
We were delighted by the success of our Digital Drop In last term. Pupils from our ‘Tech Team’ helped senior citizens with various digital issues from sending messages to setting up a fitbit, editing photos and navigating on Google Maps. It runs on the first Tuesday afternoon of every month. Last month sadly we had no visitors which was disappointing for the children as they are eager to help but we plan to engage with groups in the Kingswells Community Centre to help spread the word and improve our numbers. If you know anyone who would like to join us at our next session please encourage them to come along on the first Tuesday of the month during term time, from 2pm to 3pm.
Living Streets
We are always keen to encourage our children to be healthier and to be safer. One way to achieve this would be for more children to walk to school. This would increase levels of exercise and decrease the traffic congestion around school at the beginning and end of the day. This is a difficult issue and we get regular calls from parents and residents who are very concerned about the congestion and particularly the safety of our pupils. Last month we surveyed how our pupils travel to school. Over 50% of our children travel to school by car meaning there could be around 200 cars in the vicinity at any one time. We would like to play our part in reducing the number of cars around school and therefore improve safety for our children and their families. To work towards this, we have signed up to Living Streets Travel Tracker. This is a way to provide an incentive for pupils to walk, cycle or scoot to school. Each day children will record how they have travelled to school. Our initial target is for every child to walk/ cycle/scoot to school at least once. If children have to be driven to school they can still earn their point for that week if they ‘Park and Stride.’ This means that children and the parent/carer would need to park further away from school and walk for at least 5 minutes to get to school. We hope this will improve congestion around school as well as being a healthy and sustainable choice for our pupils. Children who reach their target of walking/cycling/scooting 4 times in a month will earn a special badge. There are 10 badges to collect.

Latest News New Defibrillator For Kingswells A defibrillator is a device designed to be used if a person experiences a CARDIAC ARREST. Kingswells will soon have a Publicly Accessible Defibrillator. By the time this article goes to press Kingswells Community Council will have its first defibrillator. We are currently organising the installation of the unit in a coded box. The code is given out by the 999 service when a call is made to the ambulance service. The British Heart Foundation is supporting a nationwide programme of awareness , education, and training in relation to Sudden Cardiac Death. As part of this programme there is encouragement for individuals and communities to engage with training in CPR -cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and use of Defibrillators. Become a Nation of Lifesavers. While these defibrillators are designed to be used by lay individuals who have had no previous training , it is recognised that training in their use and very importantly training in CPR contribute to saving people’s lives as well as improving skills and confidence.
Readers are reminded that a full account of Community Council business and other local and Aberdeen news is available on our website at http://www.kwells.org
training will be delivered by the Resilience Officer of the Scottish Ambulance Service and by local representatives of the British Heart Foundation as part of the Heart Start programme. If you would like to express your interest in attending a training session please register your interest at www.kwells.org/defib We will be posting further information on the training and use of the defibrillator on the website as the project progresses. In the meantime access to further information on Cardiac Arrest, CPR , Defibrillator use and other relevant issues is available at www.bhf.org.uk.
Next Meeting The meeting of Kingswells Community Council held on 8th October was the last meeting of the current community council. How do you get to Wimbledon? No the answer isn’t practice, unless you have designs on the trophy of course! I’ve always been a fan of Wimbledon, and ever since my older brother came home from a school trip, excitedly describing his visit to Centre Court, I’ve had a dream to visit the championship myself. If a visit to Wimbledon is on your bucket list too, here’s what to do. There are four options. The first is the Public Ballot. To take part, send a SAE to AELTC, PO Box 98, London, SW19 5AE by 19th December latest and you will receive an application form. This needs to be returned by 31st December and grants you entry into the draw for a pair of tickets, but you can’t select which court or day you will visit. Successful entrants will be chosen by random by computer and will be notified by post. Once an offer of tickets has been received, you will need to pay for them online by debit or credit card.
If you’re unsuccessful with the Public Ballot, all is not lost! You can still buy tickets online at Ticketmaster. Several hundred tickets for Centre Court and Court 3 go on sale one and two days before the day of play. They can sell out in seconds and are issued strictly on a first come, first served basis, with a maximum of two tickets allowed per person. If you’re particularly gutsy, you could join The Queue. A limited number of tickets for Centre and Courts 1 and 2 can be purchased on the day, along with several thousand Grounds Passes for courts 3-18. The earlier you join the queue, the more likely you are to get the best tickets, so if it’s one of the show courts you’re after, don’t forget your tent! Finally, you could purchase a hospitality package. This is expensive but offers you the VIP treatment and would really make your visit a day to remember! For more information on how to plan your trip to Wimbledon, visit www.wimbledon.com. Maybe I’ll see you there?! Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Update from Mark McDonald MSP A huge part of my job as an MSP is to meet my constituents and to hear their views on the day to day issues that affect them. My constituency office has been very busy over the past few months supporting people in need of help or advice. I hold surgeries in my constituency office, which is located within the Mastrick Shopping Centre, every Monday between 10am-12pm where constituents can pop in to receive some help and assistance. I have also been holding surgeries in different areas around the constituency, with the most recent being Dyce, Sheddocksley and Kingswells. These surgeries were well attended and I had the opportunity to speak to lots of members of the community – it is great to hear about all of the positive things happening in the area. All of my constituency surgeries are advertised in advance on both my Facebook and Twitter accounts, which you can find at the bottom of this update. As an MSP, I am here to help my constituents in Aberdeen Donside in any way that I can. If you feel that I could be of assistance to you, then please do not hesitate to contact my office on 01224 789457 or mark.mcdonald.msp@parliament.scot.

In recent months I have also met with lots of interesting organisations, such as the North East Scots Language Board, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation and Instant Neighbour, to name a few. I think it is very valuable for politicians to visit local organisations and initiatives to find out about their work and see what they do first hand. If you are involved in or know of any initiatives taking place in Aberdeen Donside that you think I should know about, then please do contact my office as it would be great to find out more. On the 28th September I also held a coffee morning in support of MacMillan Cancer Care at the James Tyrrell Centre. This a cause very close to my heart as my late father was supported by MacMillan nurses during his fight against cancer, so I like to help raise some vital funds for this fantastic charity. Again, if you feel that I could be of any assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact my constituency office. 7 Steps to the Perfect Pumpkin Lantern
nail, to poke holes around the design. when you remove the paper, the design will be left on the pumpkin.
1. Choose a decent sized, rounded pumpkin. Fresh unblemished ones are best. Work on newspaper as pumpkin carving is messy!
5. A sharp, serrated knife will work best to cut out your design. Start at the centre and work outwards using short saw-like strokes for better control.
2. Use a serrated blade to cut a lid. Make sure the hole is big enough so that you can scoop out the flesh inside.
6. Rub some petroleum jelly on to the exposed parts of the pumpkin. This stops those areas turning brown.
3. Use a large spoon or ice cream scoop to remove the pulp and seeds. Thin the walls a little too by scraping away some of the flesh. This makes carving easier and allows more light through.
7. If you’re using a real candle, put it in a small glass. Cut holes in the lid to allow heat and smoke to escape. Fairy lights and batteryoperated candles are the safest and best options for lighting the pumpkin.
4. It’s best to draw your design in marker first. Bold shapes are easiest. For a professional finish use a paper template. You can draw your own or download one; tape it to the pumpkin then use a sharp pointed tool, like a knitting needle or

Save with a Service Why an annual boiler service is important. Sometimes we might wonder if it’s worth arranging a boiler service, especially if everything seems to be working fine. It’s one expense we can do without when Christmas is looming. Here are five reasons to book your service now. IT SAVES LIVES - A faulty boiler is dangerous. According to government statistics, each year in the UK, 50 adults and children die from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning; 200 are hospitalised and around 4,000 people end up in A&E with symptoms due to leaking boilers. A Gas Safe qualified boiler engineer will check for and fix any leaks or weak points during a service.
wasting energy. IT SAVES THE ENVIRONMENT - If your boiler isn’t wasting energy your carbon footprint is reduced. IT SAVES ON REPAIR BILLS - That annual service to make sure your boiler is working correctly will save money on future repairs by letting the boiler engineer fix minor issues which might have caused significant problems later. IT SAVES ON INSURANCE HASSLES Most boiler warranties and some home and business insurance policies require that you ensure your boiler is safe to use. Why wear a Poppy? It’s over a century since more than nine million soldiers were killed during the First World War. The last of the veterans from that era are dead and many young people know little about the causes and devastating aftermath of the conflict. Many refuse to wear a poppy because they think it glorifies war. Perhaps it’s more important than ever that we discuss the poppy’s place in history. Much of the worst fighting in World War 1 took place in Flanders, the western part of Belgium. The area suffered terribly, with homes, farms, roads and trees all completely destroyed. The land became a bleak, muddy graveyard for the thousands of soldiers who fell there.
QUARTER PAGE ADVERT
One plant, however, thrived in the disturbed soil and that was the poppy. Year after year, as the warm weather arrived, the poppies bloomed and turned the grim bare ground into a sea of red. At that time, fighting in Flanders was a young Lieutenant, Colonel John McCrae, a Canadian physician. In May 1915, his close friend and fellow soldier was killed in action. Seeing the poppies growing alongside his grave moved McCrae to write the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’, which was later published in Punch magazine. The idea to use the poppy as a symbol of remembrance for dead soldiers came from an American professor and YWCA worker, Moina Michael, in 1918. She wrote a poem in reply to McCrae’s called ‘We Shall Keep the Faith’ and started to sell silk poppies.

The idea was adopted by the American Legion in 1920 and she became known as ‘The Poppy Lady’. In 1921, Anna E Guerin started making artificial poppies in France and gained the support of Field Marshal Douglas Haig, founder of the Royal British Legion. The first poppy appeal was held on Armistice Day 1921. It was hugely popular and, despite a recommended selling price of threepence per poppy, single petals sold for £5. In all, the appeal raised £106,000 – that’s nearly £30 million in today’s terms! In recent years some people have chosen to wear a white poppy, either instead of or alongside a traditional red one. White poppies symbolise pacifism and also

remember the civilians killed in conflicts past and present, as well as the soldiers. The idea is not a modern one as I originally assumed; it was initially put forward in 1926 by the No More War Movement, and the first white poppies were sold by the Cooperative Women’s Guild in 1933. They are now distributed by the Peace Pledge Union, a British pacifist non-governmental organisation that works for a world without war. However you choose to wear your poppy this year I hope you now have a greater understanding of the interesting and complex story behind this iconic flower. By Sarah Davey

News from Councillor Cameron... Here we are entering Autumn 2018 after what has been an unbelievable summer in respect of weather. As we have progressed through the summer various developments have influenced Kingswells, some very positive and others perhaps not so positive. In the 12 months or so until April 2018 Kingswells had to suffer from the complete withdrawal of a public bus service through the village when FirstBus decided their service was uneconomical and ceased running the service. With considerable effort on my part an interim fix was achieved with the extension of the Crematorium Bus Service to Kingswells. Initially this service was only Monday to Friday, did not operate at weekends or in the evening and the first service in the morning was problematic for Kingswells residents requiring to be in town for work before 8am. A minor improvement on no bus service but certainly not satisfactory for a community the size of Kingswells. There were minor tweaks to this arrangement which saw slightly earlier buses in the morning, a little extra in the evenings and some weekend services. Still unsatisfactory. From April 2018 the number 14 bus serving Kingswells village with a much-required link to the city centre commenced. This service, as you are probably aware, is a service provided
by Stagecoach under contract to Aberdeen City Council and dependent year on year on the annual Budget arrangements. We are now 6 months into this service, which I campaigned hard to achieve and my mailbox continues to be populated with complaints regarding the reliability of the service. Buses breaking down, buses late, buses missing from the schedule, in short not the service Kingswells or any other community in Aberdeen deserves. This needs to be rectified and I continue to work on your behalf to achieve a reliable and adequate public transport service for Kingswells. No doubt everyone has noticed work starting on the Aberdeen Football Club stadium complex and East Kingsford. I am still acutely aware that there are mixed feelings in Kingswells about this development both for and against the stadium. No doubt there are also many people in the community who are ambivalent to the development. Whichever camp you belong to on

this at least progress is now being made which can be monitored in line with the conditions attached to the development by Aberdeen City Council. For the many years the potential arrival of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route for the city and Kingswells has been evolving. It has reached a stage of development where it is now very clearly visible. It came alive during September when over a weekend there was firstly, an opportunity to walk with some entertainment at Maryculter and then on the Sunday the one and only opportunity to cycle 18km of the road, after opening the road will not be available to cyclists or farm vehicles. Kingswells Park & Ride played a big part in that weekend’s activities. On the Saturday it was a starting point for the shuttle buses to Maryculter and on the Sunday was the access point to the AWPR for the cyclists. We are certainly getting to the point where the road is preparing to open. It has been designated the A90 with the current A90
from the Stonehaven access to the new road through to the AWPR link around Blackdog being de-trunked and re-designated the A92. Many of the new road signs have now been installed. Will this new “by-pass” work and relieve traffic on other roads? The proof of the pudding will be in the eating, driver behaviour will play a big part in the success or otherwise of this development. I hope you and your families have enjoyed the summer and here’s hoping for not too severe an autumn and winter. Preparation time: 10 mins Cooking time: 20 mins Serves: 4 Ingredients 3 tbsp olive oil 140g Pancetta or bacon, cut into cubes 1 Small onion, thinly sliced 25g Butter 500g/1lb 2oz Pumpkin or butternut squash, peeled, deseeded and diced 20g Fresh sage, finely shredded 400g Pasta (I used spaghetti) 25g Freshly grated parmesan Parmesan, plus extra to serve Method Heat 1tbsp olive oil in a heavy-based saucepan. When hot add the chopped pancetta or bacon, then cook for a few mins. Add remaining oil and the onion. Cook for 5 mins, until the onion becomes soft and the pancetta becomes crispy. Stir in the butter until melted, then add the diced pumpkin or squash and the sage. Stir well to combine, then season well. Cover and cook for 6-10 mins, stirring occasionally until the pumpkin is soft, but not mushy. Meanwhile, cook the pasta in salted boiling water until it’s soft but with a little bite remaining. Drain and add to the pumpkin mixture. Stir in the Parmesan and season. Serve in pasta bowls sprinkled with extra Parmesan.

News from Councillor Delaney... After more than six years writing these columns in which buses have featured prominently, I’d like to have a bus free issue but of course you wait ages for a bus, then two or three come along, and this month’s main story relates to three bus services in the Kingswells area! Let’s start with the 747 (not to be confused with the 727 which runs from the City Centre to the Airport). This is a new hourly service from Stagecoach which will run via the AWPR from Montrose to Ellon with some journeys continuing on to Cruden Bay and Peterhead. The route will operate via Stonehaven, Kingswells Park & Ride, Craibstone Park & Ride and Aberdeen Airport, also calling at Bristows Heliport and Kirkhill Industrial Estate at peak times. At the point of writing there’s still no news on the opening date for the AWPR, but this new bus service is due to commence as soon as the AWPR is fully open. The direct service to Aberdeen Airport, Bristows Heliport and Kirkhill Industrial Estate will be a great boost for Kingswells residents, not to mention opening up the possibility of day trips to Stonehaven and Montrose. Also on buses are the new timetables for the x17 and the 14 which come into force from 12th November. Both are designed to improve

timekeeping on these services. The downside is that journeys on the 14 will take about 10 minutes longer to get into the city centre but this has to be offset against the intention that the bus should turn up on time, and anything has to be better than buses not turning up or running up to 40 minutes late. Despite the poor timekeeping of the 14 to date, passenger number are up significantly on those who had used the 94, which has to be good news by way of sustaining the service in the longer term.
entertainment or informative presentations after lunch. Recent visitors have included the Aberdeen City Wellbeing Team, House of Colour, Donald Grassie & Friends and The Drama Wifies. Currently around 30 people turn up on a regular basis for an enjoyable get together. This has built up entirely by word of mouth and they still have capacity for more residents to attend. So, why not come along next month and bring a friend with you.
I was recently contacted by a local resident highlighting all the good work going on at Kingswells Church and this was at a time when they were still searching for a new minister.
On a completely different matter (or should that be natter?) and very much to my astonishment, my proposal to look into using “plastic roads” which will hopefully reduce costs, last longer and provide an environmentally friendly solution for the disposal of plastic bags and plastic bottles, was unanimously agreed by the council! I do wonder if that was designed to “shut me up” as I didn’t even get an opportunity to speak to it as nobody needed any convincing!
What jumped out at me was the “Nosh + Natter” lunchclub which has been running since April. I like the name as I enjoy my food and well, you know I like a natter! The club meets at 12.30 on the first Wednesday of every month, offering a soup and cake lunch with teas, coffees and either some
The next step is a report coming back which will look at the pros and cons so we can decide whether or not to commit to a trial of the product. It’s all about learning from other authorities who have carried out trials before we commit to it, but I am hoping for a positive outcome as this could allow us
Also worth a mention is the long awaited Sunday service on the 14 route, which will run on an hourly frequency. Let’s just hope the 14 gets well and truly sorted out this time as Kingswells residents have had to put up with unreliable bus services for far too long.

to resurface more roads and make a better job of filling our potholes. As always, please get in touch to raise any concerns you may have. I hold monthly surgeries in Kingswells Community Centre and regularly attend the meetings of various community groups in the area. I would of course be more than happy to receive an invitation to attend any groups I am not currently attending. Strength & Balance : Speed Speed is an unusual fitness component to speak about in terms of older adult Fitness. Speed is the ability of the body to move from A to B and how quickly it can do so. This can be the whole body, a limb, muscle or muscle group. Moving at speed requires strength and power. The definition of speed is relevant to older adults but, perhaps not as you know it. Speed is used in, and thought to be only relevant to, many sports such as basketball, football and rugby. However, your reaction time is closely related to speed. Reaction time is the ability to perform motor skills as rapidly as possible, essentially the ability to move quickly and is a key skill in sport, and daily life. Reaction time is very important as we age. Such as the ability to place a corrective step to stop us from falling over a paving stone. The ability to place a hand out on a worktop, or furniture, to keep us upright, or the ability to move a little faster to catch a bus. With the right exercise this can be successfully achieved. Your reaction time and speed can be improved, at any age, with exercise. Usually exercises such as power lifting and other sports specific exercises. For example if you play basketball, during training you add sprints in-between the goal shooting practice. This simulates the sprinting encountered during a game, up and down court prior to goal shooting, under the exhaustion from sprinting. As an older adult, we still move, complete a task and then move again. For example, have you ever gone to sit in a chair and realised half way down there is something on the chair which you don’t want to sit on, and then you need to stand up again? This is your reaction time and ability to quickly control your body weight. Looking to advertise ? Call Sue t : 01383 279 355
In our Strength and Balance exercise classes in Cults, Mannofield, Aboyne and Banchory we consider exercise for your balance, strengthening and speed of reaction during our programmes all of which improves confidence also. We know exactly what to put into the exercise programme for you to achieve the power to move, the speed at which you wish to move and keep your balance to be confident during movement. Speed is a great component of fitness to training, for all ages, you’ll work to your own speed and not anyone else’s. To develop your speed training you are looking at working at a 55-85% intensity of your 1RM. If you are unsure where your 1RM or want a more personal exercise programme our 1-2-1 fitness programmes are unique to you. Give us a call and discuss your needs with us now.

Needle Phobia:
How to Overcome It A fear of needles is pretty common and can have a big impact on your health. At its worst, it can mean that blood tests aren’t carried out or injections aren’t administered. As many as 1 in 10 people are thought to have a phobia of needles so you’re not alone if you’re affected!
Self Help for Needle Phobia If you’re nervous about blood tests or injections but you don’t feel as though you’re going to faint, breathing exercises can help to take the edge of the anxiety. Exposure therapy can be effective. This involves gradually exposing yourself to your fear, starting with just the thought
of needles and building up to having an injection or blood test. Don't keep your fear to yourself. The person taking your blood or giving an injection can help to put you at ease if they know how scared you are.
How Hypnotherapy Can Help Hypnotherapy is very effective for phobias in general and can help to take emotion out of the equation, which means you can feel much more in control of your fears. The physical effects of phobias are also likely to be less intense once this starts to happen. If you’re struggling with any kind of phobia, get in touch with me to see how hypnotherapy could help you to take back control! Call Sam on 01224-966854
