ere I am, back again, thinking what can I tell you about this month!
Did you know this is the bit of the newsletter I hate the most! I don’t mind sharing bits and bobs but not so sure you enjoy reading about them! Anyway - nothing much has happened in June/July - just the house project has progressed. We have a bathroom and a kitchen and the bedrooms are almost complete. About to start on the lounge next after we attempt the tiling in the kitchen! Hope I won’t be saying “should have phoned Abby”. The weather of course has been superb and it’s been fab enjoying all that Scotland has to offer. With the darker nights starting to creep in we turn our thoughts to evening classes! Well look no further than our very own Community Centre for some inspiration. Jenny’s winning design on the bus is fab have you spotted it on it’s round? Some of our regular contributors are off during the summer so hoping we’ll get some more ‘local’ news for you next issue. It will be one of two before Christmas! Cripes how did that happen? Jenny's winning bus art A budding artist from Kingswells Primary School won a local competition promoting the environmental benefits of using public transport. Kingswells Primary School pupils have participated in a drawing competition where they were tasked with illustrating why it is better to travel by bus following the launch of service 14 connecting Kingswells to Aberdeen. Children took part in the art competition in June 2018 and almost 200 entries were submitted from the second biggest primary school in Aberdeen. Each entry was unique with their own reasons for encouraging bus transportation. Reasons for travelling by bus included ecofriendly travel, safe and affordable travel and the bus being a fun way to travel with friends. Entries were reviewed by the directors at Stagecoach before the lucky winner was chosen. Jenny, 11, from Primary 6 won the competition with her illustration of children using the bus to get to school. Jenny's artwork is now proudly on permanent display on the back of one of the service 14 buses in Kingswells. Jenny also secured the top prize of a bicycle for her efforts while all other entrants received a Stagecoach goodie bag for taking part. Mrs MacIver, head teacher of Kingwells Primary School said: "All of the children did a fantastic job creating their entries for the competition and I look forward to seeing Jenny's winning design on the buses in the village." Ian Bell, Operations Manager for Stagecoach North Scotland said: "With almost 200 entries it was hard to narrow it down to just one winner. Jenny’s drawing encompasses many great reasons to opt for bus travel, highlighting ecofriendly travel and the ease of taking the bus to school. We are delighted with the amount of interest from Kingswells Primary School and would like to thank all of the pupils for their participation." The artwork designed by winner Jenny can be spotted on the service 14 route connecting Kingswells and Aberdeen City Centre. Service 14 is supported by Aberdeen City Council and launched on Monday 30th April 2018. The buses operated on the Kingswells route are fitted with free wi-fi as well as the latest vehicle tracking software allowing customers to see exactly when their bus will arrive through the Stagecoach mobile app. Contactless payments have also been recently introduced to all Stagecoach buses in the North Scotland area.

Do you have enough Zinc in your diet? Have you been following nutrition advice to cut down on red meat and eat more fruit and vegetables? Or are you vegetarian/vegan and eat no meat at all? Zinc is an important micronutrient and is required for the proper structure and function of proteins in the body. A lack of zinc in the diet can have a negative effect on health including suppressing the immune system (making you more susceptible to colds and infections), it has an effect on men’s health (in the production of healthy sperm, and predisposing the prostate gland to infection), and helps maintain the integrity of the skin (so is used in treatment of nappy rash, dry skin, acne etc.). Zinc may also influence chronic diseases such as heart disease.
Health experts advise eating less red meat and more fruit and veg, but most zinc in the diet comes from red meat so some groups of the population are at risk of zinc deficiency, especially vegans, vegetarians, low income families and the elderly. Scientists at the Rowett Institute in Aberdeen, in collaboration with the James Hutton Institute are trying out a new way to improve zinc nutrition without altering peoples eating habits by biofortifying potatoes with Zinc using normal farming methods. Potatoes are not only widely eaten throughout the world, being relatively cheap they are accessible to most people and they could be utilised by everyone including vegans and vegetarians to improve their zinc status. Kingswells Primary School News Upcoming Events at Kingswell School Kingswells School are planning to celebrate 25 years in our current school by looking back at school days over the years and the history of Kingswells. We plan to hold an open event later in the session and would love to display photos and stories of the past both in our current school, the previous Kingswells School and of the community of Kingswells. If you have any photos or stories which you would be willing to share with us please get in touch with Mrs McAra at Kingswells School on 01224 740262. Any contributions would be greatly appreciated. We have been delighted by the success of our Digital Drop In this session and plan to continue it in the new term on the first Thursday of every month. Pupils have helped senior citizens with a various digital issues from setting up a fitbit to editing photos and navigating on Google Maps. Coast to Coast Challenge - we did it! We would like to thank everyone who sponsored us. So far we have raised ÂŁ1777.50 for Alzheimer Scotland. Starting in Cumbria, we cycled through the Lake District, North Pennines & Northumberland, arriving 3 days later in Tynemouth - a total of 148 Miles! Latest News Aberdeen FC Stadium at Kingsford
KCC were invited by Aberdeen Football Club and their Community Trust to attend a meeting at the end of June.  Now that the stadium and training and community facilities have been approved, the Club and Community Trust would like to engage with various local organisations and groups in both Kingswells and Westhill to try to get the best facilities for all residents. As a result, two representatives from KCC attended a very informative and worthwhile meeting in June. The next meeting will be held around September.  Whilst accepting this was a very emotive issue during the planning process, we as a Community Council feel it is important to move forward and now engage with the Club to achieve a positive outcome for us all. Therefore, if you have any ideas or issues you would like us to raise with the Club, then please get in touch with us and we shall put these forward at the next meeting.
New Footpath
There is now some delay on progressing the footpath North of Derbeth Manor and Derbeth Grange. Holidays have come into play but there is also a lack of available funding.
Derbeth Pond The Derbeth pond is now badly affected by weeds/algae due to no fresh water having flowed into the pond since the end of May. It is too early to make judgements as to the cause due to the lack of rainfall during June and July. Investigations are ongoing.
Kingswells Community Council The current term for all community councils in Aberdeen is coming to an end. Existing members must stand down. Kingswells will shortly be looking for people who want to make a difference in the village. We live in a great place, but we can always make improvements. Do you have any ideas Looking to advertise ? for making improvements in Kingswells? Do you have any projects you would like to implement? If you don’t currently have any ideas you can always assist in any current or new projects. If any of the above applies to you then you should consider joining KCC. Generally, members give as much time as they want. Full members should attend a monthly meeting, but after that it is dependant on the time you have available. If you don’t think you can commit to this, you can still get involved as an Associate Member. No previous experience required. ACC will provide training where required. Anyone interested in becoming a full member for the next three-year term should apply using one of the forms that will be available at various locations around the village. They can also be downloaded from kwells.org. The only requirements are that you are over 16, and you and the person proposing you on the nomination form are on the electoral role for Kingswells. Kingswells will be looking for 12 full members and as many associate members as we can attract. If more than 12 applications are received, then there will be an election to select the 12. (to date Kingswells has not had to go to election). If you want to speak to someone about what is involved, then please come along to one of our meetings or give one of our members a ring. Why Self-Examination is important One in eight women will get breast cancer, yet over a third of women don’t check themselves regularly for early tell tale signs that could save lives. Regular self-examination should take place around the same time every month to help you become familiar with the natural shape and feel of your breasts. Any changes should be easily detected, in particular puckering and dimpling of the skin, new pain that doesn’t go away, lumps or bumps not present in the other breast, and unusual discharge, bleeding or rash from the nipple. Whilst breast cancer is more common in women over fifty, testicular cancer is a young man’s disease, with males aged 15-35 being most at risk. Early diagnosis can be life-saving, yet only 1 in 5 men check themselves monthly. During or after a warm bath or shower is the best time to self examine, when the muscles are relaxed and hang lower. Danger signs include pain or discomfort in the testicles or scrotum; a dragging feeling in the scrotum; a dull ache in the groin or lower stomach; excess fluid in the scrotum; blood in the sperm and discharge from the penis. Reinvent Yourself! How to change for the better this school year Growing up, I lived within throwing distance of the local primary school, yet every morning I arrived late and was greeted with a chant from other children: “You’re late, you’re late, your dinner’s on your plate!” I hated being singled out in this way and it has taken me years to shake off the ‘late’ label. I’m sure I’m not the only child to be labelled for a particular habit or behaviour. For others it might be “lazy”, “quiet”, “disruptive”, “noisy” or “disorganised”. But whatever the past may have held, the start of a new school year brings with it a clean slate and the chance to start anew. Defeat and discouragement should be left where they belong – in the past – while children take the chance to reinvent themselves and work towards a brighter future. Education experts say that getting a new school year off to a good start can influence a child’s attitude, confidence and performance both socially and academically. So how do we give our children the best chance of making a positive new start? First and foremost, our children need to want to change for the better and adopt the right attitude for achieving this. They need to accept responsibility for their own conduct and make a commitment to change. For example, they might decide to be punctual or polite or to get their homework done on time. As parents we can help by being positive and encouraging. Our children need to arrive at school properly prepared. Having the correct equipment such as pens, pencils, rulers, rubber and reading diary are all important, but so are getting enough sleep and having a decent breakfast at the start of the day. It’s been proven that adequate sleep, food and water all aid concentration. Some food and drink, however, is counterproductive. Foods high in sugar and caffeine can cause hyperactivity, so choose carefully what to eat at lunchtime to avoid a negative impact on their afternoon lessons! Though ultimately a child is responsible for their own behaviour and performance, parents do have their part to play. Take an interest in what they are doing, ask them about their day when they get home and become involved in school life when you can. Children are our real-life mirrors; they tend to imitate what they see. If they see that they are important to you and that school is important to you, they’ll take it much more seriously and be more responsible. The start of a new school year should be exciting, a time of celebration, a time to look forward, not back. Good luck as you and your child embark on a future of new possibilities! The Bounty Hunters Modern day metaldetecting When I was a little girl my father bought a cheap metal detector off a friend. It was a weird-looking bit of kit and dad (rather rashly) hinted that we might find buried treasure and become millionaires. It accompanied us on every holiday and I have happy memories of dad, wearing comical over-size headphones, wandering up and down various beaches, periodically pausing to dig up yet another ring pull or bottle top. We
never did find a treasure chest but we did find foreign coins, old pennies, a brooch and once, an engraved wedding ring, which we handed in to the local police station. That was exciting enough to sevenyear-old me. Dad’s metal-detecting was a harmless and somewhat seasonal hobby, but recently I was surprised to learn that modern-day metal detecting is a subject which provokes controversy among archaeologists, the police and landowners. Most metal detectors admit that becoming rich or finding something of immense value is about the same as winning
the lottery. But it does happen. In 2009 Terry Herbert, who had been metaldetecting for 18 years unearthed what has become known as The Saxon Hoard: the largest collection of Anglo Saxon gold and silver ever seen. Valued at £3 million it is still the most expensive treasure ever found on British soil. Terry did nothing wrong; he informed all the right people and behaved properly throughout his

Archaeologists feel that the past belongs to everybody; that finds should be in a public collection on display and accessible for study on the internet or in books. They see those who use metal detectors as being very object-orientated while they, the academics, are educated to take a broader view.
Most metal detector enthusiasts do operate legitimately, but some work on the wrong side of the law. Archaeologists call these treasure hunters ‘nighthawks’, because they go out to archaeological sites under cover of darkness to raid them for artefacts, which they can then sell over the internet. They often cause considerable damage in the process. So does that mean we shouldn’t go out metaldetecting? No, it’s a fun hobby and can be absorbing, exciting and educational. But there are some rules all enthusiasts should obey.
Do not trespass Adhere strictly to laws concerning protected sites. Minimise ground disturbance when you dig. Adhere to the country code (close gates, don’t litter etc.) Report any finds to the relevant landowner. Consider joining a metal detecting club – Not only is it fun and sociable, they will have current advice on the conservation and handling of artefacts, and often provide insurance too. News from Councillor Delaney... Earlier this year Eileen and I celebrated our Silver Wedding Anniversary. Quite an achievement we thought until we came across so many other couples who had celebrated Golden and Diamond Anniversaries, or were about to. It’s all relative, so to speak, but this was an important milestone for us, as it had also been for those other couples so many years before. Although I thoroughly enjoy my role as your councillor and the challenges that presents, it’s important to recognise that I couldn’t fulfil the level of commitment without Eileen’s support. In the last edition of Kingswells News I wrote of the contribution of Steve Glennie to Kingswells School. I recently had the pleasure of meeting his parents, who presented an award bearing his name at this year’s annual achievement assembly. It’s always heartening to see how well children of all abilities progress through the school and how well the school teams, ably assisted by teachers and parents, perform against their peers elsewhere in the city and indeed nationally too. As well as the professionalism and good management of the school, it’s also about the way the school works collaboratively with parents, businesses and the wider local community to achieve such success.

I’m pleased to say that Kingswells School is to get an upgrade to their internet connection and some soundproofing works are set to be carried out over the summer holidays. The soundproofing works are limited in nature but should still make a big difference. The school continues to be bursting at the seams and it’s testament to the staff that they are able to offer the quality of education they do, under such challenging circumstances. I mentioned internet connections and I appreciate not everyone can get fibre broadband in Kingswells. This is disappointing given the high hopes of a few years ago and the numerous setbacks. However, out with Derbeth Grange (where there are about 40 properties) there’s less than 20 other addresses within the village which can’t get the service. Rumours abound, most of which are untrue! I’ve had much discussion with Openreach over these remaining addresses and received assurances that their target date for completion is the end of 2018, though works may hopefully be completed sooner. Unfortunately most rural Kingswells addresses have yet to be upgraded and there are no imminent plans to address this in the short term. Another topical subject is the
poor condition of our roads. A number of roads in Kingswells have been jet patched over the past few months. This involves putting down a semipermanent surface which offers some respite to motorists in the short to medium term. In effect it buys time until the council can afford to resurface the road. I have my own ideas as to we might possibly fill potholes and resurface roads at a much lower cost with a newer product which makes use of plastic waste. I’ve asked the council to look into this with the hope we can get more works done from the available budget. I would certainly not like to see it being used as a cost cutting exercise, given that there’s such a backlog of roads in poor condition. Alarmingly we saw another gorse fire at Burnbrae Moss a few weeks ago, the second serious fire in just over a year. In both cases I had arranged for the council and the fire service to inspect the damage with a view to putting in place preventative measures! Assurances have been given that there’s sufficient natural fire break between the gorse and the houses. It was felt that fire engines can access the area easily and gain access to sufficient supplies of water in the event of any further outbreak. This of course fails to address any future damage
to the moss, its wildlife and any persons in the vicinity. I would therefore urge everyone to take particular care and to report any suspicious activity in the area to the police. On a brighter note, the Bucksburn Valley core path network around Kingswells has recently seen some upgrading, including a complete replacement of the boardwalk, making it much more appealing for walkers. It’s well worth visiting to see the high quality of the work and to hopefully get some exercise too! As always, please get in touch to raise any concerns you may have. I hold monthly surgeries in Kingswells Community Centre and regularly attend the meetings of various community groups in the area. Designer Plots It is estimated that just 3% of the UK population employ a professional garden designer, with most people opting to design their own outdoor space, or adapt one they may have inherited.

The first decision to make when starting a plan is whether to make it look ‘designed’ or not. By this I mean do you like a structured garden with big sweeping curves and strong lines, formality and symmetry, or do you prefer a more informal space that looks like it ‘just happened’, almost by mistake, (these are much harder to achieve as you are often trying to recreate something nature
does best). There was an industry debate recently which explored the idea of modern gardens being ‘over designed’. Just like in clothing fashion, there’s a revival of a certain era every so often, and it’s the same with design outdoors. Once up on a time, formal terraces were all the rage with pretty-coloured bedding schemes and clipped hedging. Then, decades later, these were dug up and replaced with sweeping natural ‘landscapes’ , where trees and lakes were carefully located to make them appear as though they had always been there.

Which is right? Well, neither, it’s personal taste and as long as it fits with the house style and surrounding landscape, I think you should do what makes you happy. After all, that’s what gardens are for, to be enjoyed. Once you’ve decided on a style, take some measurements of the boundaries, starting with the house. Use circles, curves, squares and rectangles to make some nice shapes on the plan, then choose a material to fill them in with. Usually the largest space will be the lawn, then patio or deck, and pathways, then fill the gaps with plants. Next month is the perfect time to plant, so we’ll be looking at planting plans in detail then. In 2008/2009, laws were introduced regarding things like changing levels in your garden, such as only being allowed to raise decking by 30cm above ground level, any higher would require a protective rail
or balustrade; and also the consideration of sustainable ways to manage water, and where possible retaining it within the garden. So, before planning any major works to your garden, check with your local planning department that you don’t need permission Top tips for designing your garden: • • • • •
Keep things simple and don’t over complicate the basic design layout Use pergolas to add height and shade Consider hedges instead of fencing to add structure Make space for at least one small tree Consider the maintenance of the new garden - decking and gravel are cheap, but require more maintenance in the long run.
