If you have some spare time there are a few people looking for volunteers - Future Choices are always looking for extra drivers and The Gordon Highlander Museum has various roles which might suit. If a night out is more your thng then what about a tribute night at the Village Urban Hotel or why not save up and go to the Ball in October for Poppy Scotland - should be a grand affair. Life at the renovation project goes on. Plaster dust just get’s everywhere! But the re-wiring is complete! The plastering is done for the minute until we catch up! The bathroom is being installed as we speak - shower is excellent! Kitchen work starts tomorrow! So it has been a very busy five weeks. Trying to fit in the magazines aswell was a challenge but I overcame it. You really miss broadband when you don’t have it! I do hope you enjoy this June/July copy of your magazine and if anyone is looking for a wee job in the village there is a spot available at the Community Centre. Have a great summer,

Who doesn’t love a puppy?

Guide Dogs is seeking volunteers in Aberdeen - could this be you? Commitment : to raise a puppy for a year. ‘Puppy walkers’ start puppies on their journey to becoming fully-fledged guide dogs, caring for them until they are ready for training school. Volunteering Consultant Emma Murton said: “Like all puppies, they start off as little bundles of fluff – and mischief! It’s amazing to see them develop and grow. Volunteers teach their puppy basic obedience and socialise them by taking them into lots of different environments, such as shops and cafes, and on public transport. The puppy lives with the volunteer full time so they need to be able to spend the majority of the day with them and have direct access to a secure garden. It’s a hugely rewarding role and there’s always an immense feeling of pride when a volunteer hears their puppy has qualified as a guide dog. Did you know... A puppy will normally be placed with the volunteer between 6-8 weeks of age and will leave for formal training at one of the Guide Dogs training schools between 12-14 months of age. It is possible to become a puppy walker even if you have a pet dog, as long as it is of suitable temperament. There are around 530 guide dog owners in Scotland. Kingswells Primary School News of his classes. A fond personal memory of mine is how much Steve loved encouraging youngsters in reading, they always enjoyed the funny voices he gave to each character. Parents also benefitted from Steve’s clear advice about how they could support their child in their learning and I know how much this was appreciated.

Steve Glennie In September 2018 Kingswells School sadly lost another inspirational teacher to cancer. Steve Glennie worked at Kingswells School for 17 years, firstly as class teacher and more recently in the role of Support for Learning. Mrs MacIver, Head Teacher at Kingswells School, spoke at Steve’s funeral and part of her speech is included below. ‘Steve was an excellent teacher and his gift allowed him to support pupils to reach their academic potential. He was an intelligent teacher, intuitive in identifying how each pupil learnt best and presenting information in a way which made sense to them. This was often entertaining and always imaginative. Steve was an expert in helping pupils to feel good about themselves as learners, particularly those who find schoolwork most difficult. He encouraged pupils to explore and develop their skills in whatever area they were good at. He was particularly interested in sports and could have easily been a PE teacher. He had particular success in coaching lacrosse and cricket. He had an excellent sense of humour and laughter and fun were a frequent feature

The appreciation of Steve’s gift extended beyond his teaching, he was an extremely supportive colleague. He was an excellent listener and always gave his time willingly to others. The management team have regularly said, ‘I really miss being able to talk this through with Steve, he would have been able to offer some good advice’. We miss his wisdom. Some members of staff have gone as far as to say that they would not have got through some of their most difficult times without Steve’s guidance. His kindness, intuition and support were limitless. Steve has brought lots of happiness to many pupils, parents and colleagues in different local schools over the years. His memory will live on in all the youngsters that he has inspired to love learning.’ To remember such a special person, Kingswells School held an event in May called the ‘Glennie Games’. Tallis, Oscar and Natasha wrote the following article. On Thursday 3rd May Kingswells School gathered together to remember the popular and inspirational teacher, Mr Steve Glennie.

Donations were collected on the day and we raised over £900. Mr Glennie was an amazing teacher probably one of the best teachers in Kingswells. He had been teaching here for 17 years. On the day of Glennie Games, we invited some of the AFC football players to come

along because Mr Glennie loved Aberdeen. He usually went to every home game. We all wore red and white clothes or Aberdeen kits to represent this. We sang a song called “We are Kingswells” as that was a song that Mr Glennie wrote and we found the song sheet in his desk. The activities that we did were guitar running where you ran up and down playing a blow up guitar because he loved music and played guitar. We played lacrosse, cricket and tennis because Mr Glennie used to coach these sports. We also played ‘The wellie boot throw’ where you had to throw a welly into the hoop. Each class made a rosette and then one person from each class tied them and AFC scarves on to the fence. The whole school took part and enjoyed the

afternoon. Ex pupils, parents and friends all joined in. If you want to see what we got up to you can watch a film on the following link, https://vimeo.com/269867701 Digital drop-in For the past three months, the Kingswells Tech Team has invited elderly people who are wishing to improve their technology skills to a Digital Drop-in at Kingswells School. Tech Team Digital DropIn is a place where people can learn about technology that they are struggling with or not sure about. Some people wanted to know about how to use Siri, online maps, setting up contacts on their phone or adding photos to Whatsapp. We even helped set up a Fitbit. Last month we managed to encourage a lot of people to come along and we really enjoyed sharing our skills. Next year we are going to continue this project and we are hoping to welcome a few more people along. Sessions are on the first Tuesday of the month from 2-3pm. Hypnotherapy & Fear of Flying

ike most phobias, fear of flying can take over your life. You may avoid flying altogether or you may board the plane but use alcohol or anti anxiety medications to get through it.

The fears linked to a flying phobia are anticipatory in that you’re scared of what you think could happen during the flight, rather than responding to something that does happen. It can also be linked to other phobias. For example, you might also have claustrophobia (a fear of enclosed spaces) or a fear of heights. Both of these phobias can be a factor while you’re flying. Being scared of losing control is another common culprit. Hypnotherapy is one of the most effective interventions for anxiety and it works very well for treating phobias too - including fear of flying! It has so much success because it can alter your thoughts and behaviour at the unconscious level. You’ll be given hypnotic suggestions and other tools to change the way that your mind works so that you react differently in the build up to a flight and during it. What have KCC been doing recently? Members of the maintenance action group met with ACC to identify some issues around the village centre. The main items are shown on the plan.

Bottom left - Flooding at the north end of the playing field The path at the edge of the playing field floods. We have asked ACC to look at methods to mitigate the flooding. This may involve connecting into the nearby drainage system. Bottom right â€“ Maintenance of biodiverse areas. Some of the biodiverse areas around Kingswells have never been maintained in any way. ACC will look at what maintenance can be done to improve these areas. Any maintenance

would not be manicured and would respect nesting birds and other wildlife. Other biodiverse areas identified included the open space behind the chemist. Top Right â€“ Surface improvement We have asked ACC to look at what can be done to improve the surface of a short length of path. The surface is poor and can be difficult to negotiate by people pushing buggies and some less able residents. The area has poor lighting, and low level solar lighting that is built into any new surface. This could be a longer-term project involving various parties. We also queried the methods used to trim trees and bushes along this path, but ACC does not know who carried out this work. Top Left â€“ Pond maintenance We expressed concerns about the lack of maintenance of the pond. ACC claim that some maintenance is carried out, but will they will check to see what additional maintenance can be undertaken.

Other issues: Car park surface at flats near Pizza shop. We are encouraging ACC to chase the owners of the carpark to carry out the required repairs. If this is unsuccessful then ACC may have to perform the work and to pass on costs to the owners.

Replacement Noticeboard KCC is looking to replace one of the noticeboards on the wall in front of the community centre. This has been required for some time. KCC now has funding to replace one of the noticeboards. The other will be resealed to make it more useable.

New Bench KCC is planning to install a new bench at a view point behind Concraig Park. The bench was donated by Prime Four. We are getting some estimates for the installation of the bench, and will be seeking funding to complete the installation.

Other good news: Path Upgrade ACC are proposing upgrading the path which runs from the bridge over the Bucksburn just south of Derbeth Manor up to the new roundabout on the C9C just east of Kingswells. The footpath will be upgraded and finished with a granite dust blinding. A few minor issues have to be resolved before work can commence on the project. On completion the upgraded path will greatly assist walkers seeking to gain access to Brimmond Hill.

Local Development Plan KCC is involved in the Development plan process which will identify areas for future development. The plan needs to be updated every 5 years. Currently ACC is seeking development bids from developers. This is essentially a developersâ€™ wish list. One of the proposed developments includes 700 homes to the west of the C89C perimeter road from Denburn Livery Stud north to the North Junction of the AWPR. This development would include a new primary school. This has been reported in the local press. A copy of the article is included on kwells.org. This is likely to be one of many sites in and around Kingswells identified by developers. It does not mean that these sites will become a reality. ACC will assess all the proposals and will seek local opinion towards the end of this year. We will also be seeking your opinion and will keep you up to date using this newsletter and the kwells.org website. AFC Development KCC has formed an action group to work with the football club and other local organisations to make suggestions for uses for the community sports hub, and to ensure any local concerns are addressed during the construction period. We will use kwells.org to keep you informed.

MISS (Miscarriage Information Support Service) is a monthly support group for women and partners who have suffered a miscarriage. The group is held on the first Thursday of each month, 715-915pm at Danestone Community Centre in Aberdeen. It is free to attend and confidential to attend. At the group, there is a short introduction by a MISS committee member explaining the group, why we started etc. It is then followed by a speaker from a health background e.g. midwife or a counsellor and after, a therapeutic activity by a local activities which members can get involved with. Previous activities have been making cards, painting chairs and yoga. There is also a free hot cuppa during the session.

Stay Safe in the Sun ‘Lobster’ arms. Heat exhaustion. It seems that despite the publicity, we’re still not getting the sun protection message – and we’re risking serious health issues. Protecting Your Skin “A tan is actually a sign that the skin has been damaged and is trying to protect itself,” warns the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD). Your body is desperately producing brown melanin to protect itself from further UV damage. UV damage can lead to skin cancer. While we need a little outdoor sunshine to maintain our Vitamin D levels, we should limit our exposure by: finding shade when the sun is strongest (usually 11am - 3pm from March to October in the UK); covering our skin (remembering that UV light will penetrate some fabrics); choosing a suitable sunscreen and using it properly.

News from Councillor Delaney... A few weeks ago Kingswells School held the Glennie Games by way of tribute to popular staff member Steve Glennie who sadly passed away a few months ago. Steve was an inspirational teacher who will be missed by everyone who knew him. I met him several times and was blown away by his enthusiasm and his determination to make a lasting difference to the lives of those he taught. Steve was a sports enthusiast and a keen Dons supporter. The afternoon event was attended by Steve’s family, Angus the Bull and some of the squad from Aberdeen Football Club. It formed a fitting tribute to this remarkable individual who retained his good humour and fighting spirit throughout his illness and was taken from us far too soon when he still had so much to give. Staying with Kingswells School, the long awaited sound proofing measures are to be installed over the summer holidays and the school’s broadband connection is soon to receive a major upgrade, both of which will contribute significantly to the learning opportunities for children in Kingswells. I was pleased to have been able to help out again at this year’s Kingswells May Fair which was a resounding success this year with around £8700 raised to help support the school over the coming year. This year’s event had a steady flow of people, not just kids, parents and grandparents but also residents from across Kingswells who are always made welcome at such events. I was pleased to have attended the launch of the new bus service and would like to thank everyone who took the time to support the event and meet with Stagecoach’s MD Mark Whitelocks and his team. There was one lady who came along with her daughter who wanted a word with me on an educational matter but I got distracted and she was gone! I’d be delighted to hear from her if she still wants to get in touch. The No 14 has now been running for two months

and has hopefully bedded in following a few problems during its first week of operation. As a service which relies on council funding, its performance will continue to be monitored. It is therefore essential that any late running buses or any other difficulties with the service be brought to the attention of the Public Transport Unit on 01224 523073 or by emailing PublicTransport@ aberdeencity.gov.uk so that matters can be addressed.

One final point on buses, I have brought to the council’s attention the fact that there’s no bus stops between Broaddykes Drive and Kingswells Medical Centre when coming in to the village from the city centre. This has arisen as a result of constant route changes and the decision about two years ago to stop going down Kingswells Drive. I’m surprised it has only recently been raised as an issue. I have asked for a suitable location for an additional bus stop to be identified. A great bone of contention over the past few years has been the repairing of lock block areas with black tar. Not only is it unsightly, but it appears to be such a laborious process that I struggle to understand how it can be cost effective. This has been a long running saga with the council finally agreeing to carry out a trial repairing lock block with lock block and comparing the costs to the current unsatisfactory method. This was meant to have happened last year but did not

progress. Details have been finalised and the trial will be undertaken in the cul-de-sac area in Corse Wynd over the summer. The outcome will be reported back to committee later this year. Whatever the findings, it is important to stress that this will not, unfortunately, lead to any increased funding or higher prioritisation of repairs for these areas over any of our other crumbling infrastructure. However, it will settle the matter of the repair method which will be used for these areas in the future.

Update from Mark McDonald MSP A huge part of my job as an MSP is to meet my constituents and to hear their views on the day to day issues that affect them. My constituency office has been very busy over the past few months supporting people in need of help or advice. I hold surgeries in my constituency office, which is located within the Mastrick Shopping Centre, every Monday between 10am-12pm where constituents can pop in to receive some help and assistance. I have also been holding surgeries in different areas around the constituency, with the most recent being Danestone, Sheddocksley and Kingswells. These surgeries were well attended and I had the opportunity to speak to lots of members of the community – it is great to hear about all of the positive things happening in the area. All of my constituency surgeries are advertised in advance on both my Facebook and Twitter accounts, which you can find at the bottom of this update. As an MSP, I am here to help my constituents in Aberdeen Donside in any way that I can. In the past few months I have also submitted several parliamentary questions, including asking the Scottish Government how it plans to ensure better co-ordination of care and services for people with cerebral palsy and asking the Scottish Government, in light of the reported delay to the completion of the AWPR, when work will begin on the Haudagain Improvement Project, to name a few. I also submitted a parliamentary motion congratulating Kingswells School on the establishment of the Digital Drop-in for seniors, which involves pupils from P4-7 sharing their digital skills with older people in the community. I understand that the sessions take place on the first Tuesday of every month and involve the “Tech Team” helping people improve their skills when using tablets, smartphones and laptop devices or just spending time playing fun apps with them. This is an excellent initiative that promotes intergenerational learning and will develop pupils’ confidence and skills. Service 218 restrictions: Journeys from Aberdeen - no passengers may alight until Kingswells Park and Ride. Passengers can board between Union Square and P&R at the below stops. From the P&R to Alford all stops will be in use. Journeys from Aberdeen to Alford are limited stops between Union Square and Holborn Junction. The only stops to be served are: Union Square, St Nicholas Kirk F8, Music Hall C6, Langstane Kirk B5 and Holburn Junction A4. After Holborn Junction all stops to Alford will be served, however between Holburn Junction and Kingswells P&R the loading/unloading restrictions still apply. Journeys from Alford to Aberdeen are limited stops between Holborn Junction A5 and Union Square. The only stops to be served are: Holborn Junction A5, Langstane Kirk B1, Music Hall C2, St Nicholas Kirk F1, Union Square. Between Kingswells P&R and Holborn Junction all stops will be served, however the loading/ unloading restrictions still apply. Aberdeen City Libraries deliver a fortnightly service to the Kingswells community on Fridays from 2.50 pm to 3.50 pm in the hall at Kingswells Community Centre on Kingswells Avenue. A selection of books and DVDs, suitable for all ages, are available for loan and library staff are on hand to answer enquiries and assist with reading choices. Reservations may be placed for stock that is not on display.
