A
belated Happy New Year to you all. Already we have arrived in February and now the lighter evenings are slowly creeping back in. Despite the weather the flowers are attempting to come through the soil, always a nice sign. I’m hoping to enjoy the garden this year, if the weather is kind, as no fun filled holiday is planned so far. With Valentine’s and Mother’s Day on the horizon there are some great local shops offering some special gifts, or just a nice wee card with breakfast in bed would go a long way on any of those occasions! There are a few good offers with some of the advertisers so make sure you read what’s what and grab it before it is gone. I didn’t manage to avoid the bugs that are going about but definitely not hit as hard as some so I hope everyone is on the mend and the coughs and splutters are tucked away for another year. I’ve been keeping a step count for many years now. Not always managing the 10,000 and certainly on delivery days managing much more. But research is now saying that we only need to walk moderately fast (enough to catch your breath) for ten minutes three times a day! Now that’s quite easy to slot in, so that is my new goal. I do hope you enjoy this issue of the Kingswells Community News despite it being a little light on the more ‘local articles’ but hoping next issue everyone will have time to write their pieces. I look forward to chatting with you all again in April! Go grab that cuppa… until the next time.

Christmas at Kingswells We had a busy and fun Christmas period at Kingswells School. There was a whole host of beautiful Christmas craft with the usual festive explosion of glitter! We enjoyed welcoming our parents to see our Christmas concerts and sing alongs. Our children, as usual, were incredible and performed with confidence and enthusiasm. It was clear to see how much parents enjoyed this and we had lots of positive feedback which is always appreciated. Some of our pupils visited Kingsmead to read stories for the residents and sing to them. You can see the highlights from Christmas on our Spotlight on Learning film on the school website https://kingswellsprimary.co.uk/2017/12/22/christmas-at-kingswells-p1-7/ We thank families for their kind donations to the three charities chosen by our Pupil Council. We collected a fantastic total of £918; £306 was donated to Befriend a Child, £306 to Maggies and £306 to UNICEF. Digital Drop In We are about to start a Digital Drop In for seniors see the poster for more details.

News from Councillor Delaney... As a result of circumstances beyond my control I missed the deadline for the last issue and apologise for that. Hopefully everyone had a good festive break. It certainly won’t surprise anyone to know that the lack of gritting, especially pavements, was the biggest issue this winter. In fairness the main roads and bus routes were kept pretty clear but the pavements saw little or no attention. I appreciate that we’ll never be completely happy with the council’s response to winter maintenance, myself included, and I fully acknowledge the hard work put in by those who work day and night to keep our city moving. However, this year we did not see a bad winter, yet the council struggled to make an impact outwith the priority one routes. I dread to think how we would have coped with the type of winters we had in the 1960s and 1970s! Some cul-de-sacs were being missed and others done on the basis of driver discretion as to whether or not the snow plough might get stuck. Whilst I agree this sounds reasonably sensible, some of those which were missed had always been done in the past or at least they had been up until a couple of years ago.
The Park & Ride was not gritted at all due to there being no budget assigned to this, yet people are being encouraged to use public transport, as poor as the current offering is! There were also reports of snow ploughs and pavement gritters apparently ploughing but not gritting. In the case of pavements this was leaving a sheet of polished ice which was more dangerous than the compacted snow had been! There was also a backlog in delivering the one tonne salt bags which can be requested in lieu of grit boxes (which are no longer supplied). Needless to say, these serve very little purpose unless they arrive when needed! If the council wants to help residents to do their bit and help themselves they need to get their act together. I could go on and on but will resist the temptation to do so. Suffice to say all identified issues were fed back to the council. In my view putting more money into the service is only part of the answer. Yes, we do need more pavement gritters and yes, we do need more staff. However, the council also needs to look at how they do what they do and determine

how best to deliver an improved service from their limited resources. Another issue which came up recently related to road safety at the junction of Kingswood Drive and the C89C Kingswells bypass. This arose as a result of the changed route taken by the X17 but has proved quite frightening for motorists trying to get out of Kingswood Drive as a bus travelling southbound would head directly into their path. I’m pleased to say the council is currently working up a revised junction layout to improve safety. The latest update on bus services is that the service is going out to tender at the end of January with tenders being returned soon afterwards. Further details will hopefully be available by the end of February. The intention is for the new service to commence at the start of April. This is of course subject to the council setting aside sufficient funds to deliver the service in their annual budget. On the basis that the replacement service was unanimously agreed in September, there is no reason to believe the proposals will be derailed, but it is of course a real risk until such times as the 2018/19 council budget has been agreed.
have still to be done), Derbeth Park (about 6 properties), Concraig Park, Concraig Walk and Wellside End. Three streets have already been done this year, so hopefully those remaining will be upgraded very soon. As always, please get in touch to raise any concerns you may have. I hold monthly surgeries in Kingswells Community Centre and regularly attend the meetings of various community groups in the area. I would of course be more than happy to receive an invitation to attend any groups I am not currently attending.

What does a Physiotherapist do? Physiotherapy can be defined as the use of physical methods such as massage, heat treatment and exercise to treat those affected by illness, injury or disease, rather than the use of surgery or drugs. It can also be used to help reduce risk of injury or illness in the future. Physiotherapists take a science-based approach and look at the whole person including their lifestyle and general wellbeing. They educate patients so they can become involved in their own care and often give advice about posture, lifting techniques and the correct ways to carry objects. They frequently recommend exercises to strengthen specific parts of the body and improve overall health and mobility. These may be exercises which are done at home or they may suggest exercises which are done in warm, shallow water known as hydrotherapy, or general activities such as swimming and walking. They also use manual therapy. This may be the aforementioned massage or other forms of manipulation. Some physiotherapists also use specialist methods such as acupuncture, ultrasound and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (where mild electric currents are passed through the skin). Physiotherapy is commonly used to treat back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain and sports injuries as well as movement problems following a stroke or resulting from multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease. It can also assist with rehabilitation after a heart attack, and lung and breathing difficulties such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cystic fibrosis. Some also use it in preparation for child birth. Physiotherapy is available on the NHS and via private therapists. To become a qualified physiotherapist in the UK, you must pass an approved degree. This will take three years if you study full time and around six years if you study part time. You will need three A Levels to get onto most courses and these will usually need to include a biological Science and possibly PE, as well as at least five GCSE’s including Maths, English and one Science. There are also some accelerated MSc’s available for those with non-cognate degrees. To be successful therapists need to show an aptitude for caring as well as knowledge of physiotherapy. Physiotherapists need to be good listeners, motivators and able to explain treatments clearly and calmly. In addition they should also have good manual skills and be physically fit themselves as the work can often be strenuous. To practice in the UK, physiotherapists must register with the Health and Care Professions Council and have professional liability insurance. They have to keep their knowledge and skills up to date and pay an annual retention fee. The Chartered Society of Physiotherapists is the professional, education and trade union body for around 56,000 physiotherapists in the UK. By Susan Brookes-Morris

Spotlight on Electrolysis by Jenny Davidson, Kumiko About Jenny: A former nurse with 17 years’ experience as an electrolysis specialist and also qualified in advanced electrolysis (cosmetic procedures). Unwanted facial and body hair is a common problem affecting as many as 80% of ladies in varying degrees. Most areas can be permanently cleared of unwanted hairs with electrolysis including hair on the upper/ lower lip, chin, cheeks, neck, chest, abdomen, underarms, bikini line and the eyebrows. Majority of clients will be happy, well balanced people with hair growth concerns that are purely ‘cosmetic’; others may be self-conscious or even quite distressed when they take their first tentative steps through the door. I may frequently encounter the perceived problem of hirsutism (male pattern hair growth on females) I can offer helpful and objective advice plus information to the client. In some cases where I feel there may be some abnormal systemic condition I will refer the client to their GP who may make a referral to a specialist, but in the vast majority of cases there is no underlying medical pathology and treatment at my centre is the usual outcome. The advice and treatment offered should be sufficient to resolve any normal problem, and the result is usually a restored sense of confidence and wellbeing in the client. Causes of hair growth Mechanical Stimulation Plucking, (including waxing, threading, sugaring), abrasion Normal Systemic Puberty, pregnancy, menopause, ie times of normal hormonal changes in the body. Abnormal systemic Hormone influencing medication ie steroids, contraceptive pill and hormone replacement therapy (HRT), fertility drugs. Disease: eg endocrine disorders affecting
12
hormonal secretions from the glands of the body. Operations: eg hysterectomy, removal of ovaries. Stress (may only stimulate hair growth when severe and subsequently triggers hormonal imbalance eg in anorexia.
Electrolysis is the only proven method of permanent hair removal of unwanted hair having been around since 1875. With the use of the Apilus computerised system I can offer differing treatment methods to best suit your hair growth and skin type. Unlike laser or IPL, electrolysis is ideal for sensitive skins, dark, light and grey hairs and any colour of skin as it is not affected by pigment in the hair or skin! Electrolysis targets only the unwanted, individual hair and so the skin remains unaffected. It is a progressive treatment resulting in permanent removal of the hair and not just hair reduction! What happens? A very fine needle (equal diameter to the hair to be treated) is inserted down the side of the follicle and a mild current is applied. This causes localised destruction at the root of the hair allowing the hair to be lifted out of the follicle. A mild tingling sensation is felt but soon passes with the application of a soothing gel! Kumiko Client Testimonials: Once I had summoned sufficient courage to step through the salon door I realised any doubts or apprehensions that I had were completely unfounded as Jenny immediately put me at my ease explaining all aspects of the procedure involved and also not misleading me into thinking it would be a quick fix. I could in fact be in her care for approximately 1-2 years yet within a period of just a few treatments the difference was not only noticeable but life changing in that it totally restored my self-esteem and confidence again. Linda Paterson After years of embarrassment and loss of confidence due to unwanted facial hair I decided to give Electrolysis a try. Following my first treatment I left feeling happy I had taken my first step. Jenny explained it would not be an instant fix but if I stick with it I would get permanent results. Following months of treatment I have regained my confidence and can look in the mirror once again. Unwanted facial hair permanently eradicated. Jenny provided me with expert advice and support throughout. Rosemary

Garden View Home-made compost is a thing of wonder...when all goes well! But too often it goes horribly wrong and instead of rich, sweet, crumbly stuff we end up with a putrefying heap. For a long time I believed making great compost was beyond me. There are so many methods and myths, it all seemed too complicated. Well good news...it isn’t! Compost containers You can make your own. It’s very easy apparently, using old floorboards, posts and wire netting. Unfortunately I am to DIY what elephants are to hang gliding so I opt for ready made bins. Check with your council as many offer cheap bins to encourage recycling. If not, garden centres stock a good variety. Size matters! A container should be 3 ft / 1m square minimum, preferably larger. This allows heat to build up inside the heap which aids the decay process. Position it out of the main line of sight, behind a shed or some tall plants. You can’t use: Food waste (bread, meat etc.) Cat and dog faeces Evergreen leaves Thick rooted perennial weeds How to make compost I’ve tried several methods, including my late grandfather’s which involved careful layers of various ingredients and sprinkling on lime at intervals. It worked, but I’m a lazy gardener really and can’t be bothered with all the faff. This my method, worked out through a combination of trial error (lots of error!) Mix all material together so there is no concentration of any one sort Firm it all down, Moisten it Cover it with some old carpet to keep heat in and prevent evaporation If you start the process now, by Autumn you’ll be digging in your very own wonderful compost, dragged from the bottom of your heap. You’ll have done your bit for recycling and best of all...it’s free! By Rachael Leverton

Fudge Make this as a treat for your Valentine. Pop it in a pretty box with a big bow and they will be yours forever…as long as you don’t eat it all first! A cooking thermometer is ideal but if you don’t have one use the method below. Ingredients 100g butter 550g light muscovado sugar /or Demerara for a lighter flavour. 200g golden syrup 350ml double cream 1 tsp vanilla extract ¼-½ tsp sea salt flakes Method Line a tin about 23 x 23cm / 9inches x 9 inches with greaseproof paper. Melt the butter, sugar, syrup and cream in a medium-sized, high-sided heavy-based pan. Keep stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Bring to a simmer (without stirring) over a medium-low heat and cook, stirring only occasionally until it reaches 116C, stirring more regularly after it reaches 100C and turning down the heat if it begins to catch. Take off the heat and beat in the vanilla and salt with a wooden spoon, then continue beating until the fudge has thickened and lost its shine. Add any ingredients such as raisins, chopped nuts, or chocolate chips at this point. Pour into the tin and leave to set. Once it’s firmed up a little, after about an hour, slice into squares and leave to cool completely. Best kept refrigerated. If you don’t have a cooking thermometer. Have a bowl of iced water and a metal spoon ready next to the cooker. As the mixture begins to simmer beat it more regularly then periodically take ¼ -½ tsp of the fudge mixture and plunge the coated spoon into the bowl of iced water. Then (still under the water) use your fingers to roll the mixture into a little ball. When it forms a soft, pliable ball it’s ready to take off the heat and continue with the recipe.

Land that Job!
Knowing how to go about getting a job can be tricky if you have limited experience in the job market, but here are five tips which will increase your chances of gaining employment. Network - Many people find jobs through people they know rather than traditional job adverts. Talk to family, friends and other people you know and ask if they are aware of any vacancies. Attract employers - Get potential employers to come to you. Post your CV online with various agencies and you could save yourself a lot of time and effort job hunting. Target companies - Look at the organisations which might make a good employer and concentrate on them. This may mean you only look at the big employers in your area or it might mean that you look into one sector but nationwide. Think positive - We all get a few knock backs when looking for work. Don’t take it personally if you are rejected or don’t even get a response. It’s probably not because of anything you have done wrong. Find hidden vacancies - Many jobs are landed before they are advertised but you need to act quickly. Look into internal recruitment and get friends to tune into their own company grapevines. It’s a good way of getting your foot in the door early. Knowing how to find a job is a skill in itself. Once you have been successful, the process becomes easier next time around. Happy job-hunting. Pancake Day This year Pancake Day is Tuesday 28th February. More traditionally known as Shrove Tuesday, this is the Christian feast day before Ash Wednesday, which is the start of Lent. Lent is a time of sacrifice, so Pancake Day historically was the perfect time to use up ingredients such as eggs and fats which are intrinsic to pancakes. Historically Christians went to Church on Shrove Tuesday to seek absolution, otherwise known as shriving for their sins. So Shrove is taken from the word Shrive. A bell would ring to call people to confession and this became known as the Pancake or Shriven Bell. The date of Shrove Tuesday varies because it occurs 47 days before Easter Sunday which also alters year on year based on cycles of the moon. In the UK there are various traditions associated with this day in addition to the eating of pancakes. These include: Pancake Races: - One of the most famous races takes place in Olney in Buckinghamshire where is it believed the idea of the contest originated. It is said to be based on the story of a local woman who whilst she was making pancakes, heard the Shriven Bell and ran to church still wearing her apron and tossing her pancake in a frying pan to prevent it from burning. For this reason in Olney, racers must be local housewives or men dressed as such and wear an apron and a hat or scarf. During the 415 yard race they have to toss their hot pancake at least three times and the winner has to serve their pancake to the bell ringer and be kissed by him. Other variations of the race include the one held at Westminster School, where the cook tosses a huge pancake over a five metre bar in the playground and boys try to catch the largest piece in order to get a cash prize from the Dean. From the twelfth century onwards, Shrove Tuesday Football Games were played out in the streets and often referred to as mob football. Nowadays only a few games take place as highways legislation has prohibited playing football on the road since 1835. In Scarborough on Shrove Tuesday, it is customary for a large skipping rope to be in place and for up to ten people to be skipping at a time. In some other countries, this date is known as Mardi Gras and is marked by carnivals. These are still linked to the concept of celebrating the last day of ‘fat eating’ or ‘gorging’ before the commencement of Lent. The French translation of Mardi Gras is Fat Tuesday. Kingwells Health Walks Please come and join us. Kingswells Health Walks are short, gentle walks of between one to three miles. They start every Thursday morning at 10.30 from the Community Centre and return after about an hour with the option of a stop for coffee and a chat. The walks are led by local trained volunteers and are free. We go out every week, whatever the weather, except when extreme conditions make it unsafe. You don’t need any special equipment, just sensible, comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for the weather. It is an opportunity to make new friends and explore Kingswells and its surroundings. We are lucky to live in such an attractive area with a variety of pleasant walks. Some folk may already be reasonably fit and active and for them we can walk at a normal pace, but there will always be a leader who is prepared to take beginners and slower walkers, or those with health problems, who prefer to go at a more gentle pace. We have been assessed as Dementia friendly and suitable for the Move More programme of activity for people affected by cancer. Walking has many health benefits for us all, whatever our age or ability. Health walks occur all over Scotland and are supported by Paths For All and Sport Aberdeen and are approved by the NHS. Bring along your family, friends, and neighbours too! We do hope to welcome you soon. However, if you don’t fancy walking, there are all sorts of other activities for people of any fitness level, or with disabilities, of any age and gender, organised by Sport Aberdeen. They use a variety of different venues around Aberdeen. You will find all the information on their website: sportaberdeen.co.uk. Muscular Strength for Women
M
uscular strength in its simplest form is your body’s capacity to exert force against resistance. For example as you push your body weight back up in a plank position during a push up you are exerting force into the floor/mat. This muscular strength is needed in everyday activities such as carrying your baby, lifting shopping into a car or pushing your bodyweight as you roll over in bed. A common misconception that women have is that they need to lift light weights with multiple repetitions in order to build strength so as not to create a bulky look. While this does enhance your ability to lift light weights, it doesn’t significantly build muscular strength. Your muscles need higher weights and fewer repetitions to challenge the body in order to build and gain muscular strength. Females do not have the muscle fibre type, size or testosterone that creates huge muscles. Good muscular strength can give us good posture, when exercising with good posture. Building muscular strength will also improve bone density. Our bone density peaks in our mid 30’s and declines from there, with further decline in menopause. Muscular strength exercises will increase the pull on the bone which improves bone density, preventing conditions such as osteoporosis. Muscular Strength is essential for women of all ages in maintaining good health. Fitness Her Way specialises in female fitness for good health as we age. Correct guidance is essential for successful exercising through maternity, menopause and beyond. Feel invisible in a large fitness class? Don’t know if you’re doing it right.
