THE SCOTTISH NATIONAL JAZZ ORCHESTRA presents SPIRIT OF LIGHT composed by TOMMY SMITH and featuring KURT ELLING and CAPPELLA NOVA *Friday 15th December: Glasgow Cathedral, Glasgow

Saturday 16th December: St. Machar’s Cathedral, Aberdeen Sunday 17th December: St Mary’s Cathedral, Edinburgh * World Première Performance Spirit of Light is a celebration in music and song that combines the sacred and the secular in an illuminating new work composed by Tommy Smith for the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra. The celebrated jazz vocalist Kurt Elling and the ten voices of Cappella Nova will join the SNJO to perform this new music inspired by the seasonal iconography of the Star, Three Kings, Christmas Night, Winter Snow and the dawning of Christmas Day, and featuring settings of poetry by eminently humanitarian writers such as Liz Lochhead, Rainer Maria Rilke, Norman MacCaig, Robert Frost, Franz Wright, Jim Helen, and St. Francis of Assisi. Kurt Elling is a profoundly versatile American singer and a Grammy Award winner who is recognised worldwide as a leading figure in jazz. He is noted for his ability to transcend genre through his dedication to the power of song and the strength of great melody.

4

Cappella Nova is Scotland’s finest vocal consort, noted for its unrivalled reputation as champions of Scotland’s unique treasury of early vocal music and their dedication to original music by contemporary composers like James MacMillan and John Tavener. Tommy Smith is a leading light in European jazz, first and foremost as one of the best saxophonists of his generation, and latterly as the founder and director of the SNJO and he will join the orchestra for “Spirit of Light” as principal instrumental soloist. The songs of Spirit of Light summon the traditional, the hymnal, the poetic and the modern for a series of memorable performances in the acoustic splendour of Scotland’s finest Cathedrals. As we approach the turn of the year, a time for reflection and observation, Spirit of Light is the sound of hope restored and optimism renewed with strong messages of lasting peace, quiet joy and genuine understanding. We warmly welcome audiences, young and old, to share in this extraordinary choral and orchestral jazz experience. tor, but developing their own skills in creating stories, characters and artwork. Towards the end of Nick’s time as Patron, the children created the Kingswells Comic as a lasting memento of our work together.

Earlier this year, Kingswells School was nominated for the Partnership Award at the 2017 Aberdeen City Council Children’s Services and Young People’s Awards. This nomination was made in light of our partnership work with well-known author/ illustrator Nick Sharratt over the past three years.

The awards ceremony was held at the Beach Ballroom on September 25th, with the school being represented by Ava P6, Robbie P5 and Anna P3, all of whom had contributed very successfully to the Patron of Reading project. Accompanied by Mrs Hampton and Miss Crossan, they attended the ceremony and as well as seeing all the winners collect their awards, enjoyed a buffet supper and entertainment from magicians during the interval.

Nick worked in partnership with the school as our Patron of Reading, promoting engagement with reading, writing and creativity in all forms. It proved to be a very successful partnership, with the children not only learning a great deal about the work of a professional author/ illustra-

The children were excited to see the Kingswells photo montage displayed when the Partnership Award nominations were read out, but even more thrilled when we were announced as the winner of the award in recognition of our work with Nick Sharratt. They confidently went up on stage to accept the trophy and certificates and didn’t stop smiling for the rest of the night! Kingswells School owes a great deal to Nick Sharratt for his time, enthusiasm and commitment to the Patron of Reading Programme. Although the project has now concluded, he has

inspired tremendous creativity across the school and supported children at all stages to develop their abilities in literacy and creativity across the curriculum. We are very proud to have won the award, but every bit as proud of what the Patron of Reading project has meant to our school.

Christmas is just around the corner and the pupils at Kingswells Primary School are preparing for their big Christmas celebrations. They are working hard to pull together a Christmas extravaganza! All the primary 7 pupils at the school are excited to have been invited to perform at the Evening Express Carol Concert at St Mark’s Church on Wednesday 6th December 2017. With Ms Hamilton’s help they have been preparing two songs to present at the concert including “Light a Candle “and “The Christmas Tree Feud”. The Primary 2s, 4s and 6s have been busy rehearsing their Christmas concerts which will be performed to their family members. The Primary

6s will also be performing their Christmas show this year for elderly living in the Kingswells Community. This has become an annual highlight in our calendar. We will be serving teas and coffees at school from 10.30am on Tuesday 12th December with the performance starting at 11am. We extend a warm welcome to all elderly neighbours living in our local community, please contact the school office, tel: 01224 740262 to confirm your place. The Primary 1s, 3s, 5s and 7s are going be singing a medley of songs for their parents as a social, festive get together. The Primary 1s are going to sing on Friday 15th December at 2pm in the local community. The nursery will also be participating in an extravaganza to their family in the woods. On the last week of the term we are looking forward to the Christmas lunch, Christmas jumper day, Christmas parties and a visit to Kingswells Church. From everyone at Kingswells School, we wish everybody a very merry Christmas! By Lauren and Libby P7

Core path 29 Those of us who use this path for walking, exercising the dog or accessing that cup of coffee at Dobbies will have noticed that further work has been carried out on the central section of the path to cut back the broom, willow herb and bramble bushes. This work has been undertaken by Stephen Bly of Aberdeen City Council aided by 3 young volunteers. This is an arduous task for any individual and KCC are most grateful to Stephen and his squad for undertaking this operation.

Derbeth Pond The amenity of the pond and it’s immediate environment has been in decline for a number of years culminating with a pond full of algae which in turn resulted in obnoxious smells affecting both pond visitors and neighboring residents. The owners of the pond, Stewart Milne Homes (SMH) undertook considerable research to identify the root cause of the problem including employing specialist consultants. Since the Spring of this year drainage works were undertaken to ensure a free flowing outfall from the pond. Following on from this work a type of dredging operation was carried out to remove all algae and mud from the bottom and sides of the pond. The pond has been allowed to fill naturally to it’s optimum level during September and October. The end result has been impressive and almost immediately about a dozen ducks have taken up residence along with our old friend the heron. Perhaps we can again look forward to those June mornings with mother duck and ducklings sitting at the front door waiting for breakfast. SMHs also undertook some landscaping work opening up the woodland and sewing grass in areas close to the pond. .The community wish to express their gratitude to SMHs for their diligence and exprnditure in dealing with what had become a complex issue and which has reinstated this community feature.

Working together-the NHS and the Social Work Department of Aberdeen City Council. This cooperative working arrangement is known as Aberdeen City Health and Social Care Partnership. Kingswells is in the West Locality Group of Aberdeen City Health and Social Care Partnership (ACHSCP) The West Locality Plan was made available for public consultation until 14th Nov 2017 Draft plans for each of Aberdeen’s four localities were out for public consultation and are available at http:// aberdeencityhscp.co.uk/en/localities/ Aberdeen City Health & Social Care Partnership has four localities – North, South, West and Central – to drive progress in the transformation of services. Localities have been described as the engine room of integration. Each brings together citizens from the communities, along with carers, professionals from the health, social care and housing sectors, and the third and independent sectors, to help redesign how we support health and wellbeing.

Locality Leadership Groups (LLGs) have been established in each of the four localities. Their role includes developing and facilitating connections and partnerships across the locality to improve the health and wellbeing of the population and reduce health inequalities. They also contribute to the delivery of the ACHSCP’s overall strategic outcomes. The first step to achieving this is the development of the Locality Plans which will be followed by the development of Implementation Plans in the coming months. The four documents were out for public consultation until Tuesday 14th November 2017. All replies will be collated and the Locality Plans will then be amended in light of comments received, where appropriate. The final plans will be approved by the Integration Joint Board ( IJB ) before publication. Aberdeen City Health and Social Care Partnership, Health and Care Village, Frederick Street, Aberdeen AB24 5HY. The above information was initially published by ACHSCP and has been adapted for the Kingswells News by Kenneth McAlpine on behalf of Kingswells Community Council.

New T’ai Chi Class in Kingswells

MISS (short for Miscarriage Information Support Service) is a support group based in Aberdeen which provides advice, information and support for women and their partners who have suffered a miscarriage. The sessions are held on the last Thursday of each month for 2017 and the first Thursday of the month in 2018 – they are free of charge, informal and aimed for attendees to feel comfortable, be open and at ease. More information can be found on the MISS Facebook page or email: miscarriageinfosuppservice@gmail.com

T’ai Chi is sometimes described as moving meditation; it is a unique art, and correctly practised, it enhances all aspects of one’s life. Dedicating time and endeavour to one’s practice ays dividends in terms of better health, improved posture, greater co-ordination, a calmer mind and an increased ability to deal effectively with the pressures of life. Great Rive T’ai Chi classes have been running Aberdeenshire for nearly 15 years, and are part of a wider T’ai Chi community focused around the T’ai Chi Centre in London. This new class is being set up by Alistair Bain, a Kingswells resident who already runs a class in Peterculter. The intention is to hold classes at the community centre starting in January, one morning a week, or perhaps more frequent if there is sufficient interest. Anyone requiring more information should contact Alistair on 01224-745359, or email: alistair@greatrivertaichi.co.uk More information available at: www.greatrivertaichi.co.uk

T

he Scottish Novice Boxing Championships were held at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility in Motherwell. On October 29th Kingswells ABC Junior Boxer Miles Robertson, age 12, from Kingswells was crowned the new Scottish novice boxing champion in his weight category (46kg), after coming through the prelims the previous weekend. This a huge achievement for Miles and Kingswells ABC. In the prelims Miles beat his opponent winning all three rounds comfortably and getting a unanimous decision from the judges, setting him up with a place in the final. In the final itself the first round was deemed to be quite close with both boxers taking time to settle into the fight and work each other out. Rounds 2 and 3 however were a completely different story as Miles Robertson of Kingswells ABC put his opponent under constant pressure and won both remaining rounds very comfortably to become the Scottish Champ. Photos can be seen above of the Kingswells ABC team in Motherwell and of

Miles with head club coach John Leys. Kingswells ABC also had a senior boxer Sym Gear enter the championships. Sym fought in a light heavy weight (81kg) bout during the prelims and was extremely unlucky to lose to a very close split decision. Sym did more than enough to win landing the more clean punches every round but unfortunately did not get the decision from the judges. Kingswells ABC are based at the village hall in Skene Road in Kingswells. The club have over 15 carded amateur boxers, and many other members progressing towards competition level. The club are a silver level accredited boxing club with Boxing Scotland and recently received a club cap award for excellence. All club coaches are very experienced and have all had long amateur and/ or professional careers behind them, winning various championships. The current club opening hours are 6:15pm to 7:30pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. Weekend classes are also held but weekend opening times often change due to the village hall availability. Please see Kingswells Boxing Club Facebook page for more details, or contact kingswellsboxingclub@gmail.com to be added to the e-mail distribution list. Kingswells ABC welcome new members at any age or level whether they just want to get fit or to go onto box. The club also hold a female boxfit class on Monday evenings from 7:30pm to 8:30pm. Entry fee is ÂŁ3 for all of the above classes. Kingswells ABC are currently planning to start a new boxing class for children only in 2018, which will cater for ages from 4 year and upwards. This will be held by an accredited Boxing Scotland coach teaching children the fundamentals of the sport upwards. The club will be holding a boxing show locally in Kingswells in the first half of 2018. Please see the Facebook page for future updates on these.

News from Councillor Cameron...

O

nce more the time seems to rush by, perhaps a feature of age as my grandchildren seem to think time stands still, and we have the dark nights, the temperature dropping and miserable weather – just as well Christmas is ahead to light up the winter.

Since last writing a piece for the Kingswells Gazette progress has been made on most issues discussed at that time. One aspect of the work I have been progressing for Kingswells which can be openly discussed in these pages is the investigations I have been carrying out on the Kingswells Consumption Dykes. For those of you unfamiliar with these they are of important historical interest and Kingswells has a number of these around the village. All the dykes are designated as Scheduled Monuments by Historic Environment Scotland and as such require to be maintained and preserved. Rough’s Cairn, in the Concraig area, is an example of a consumption dyke, a type of field clearance unique to NE Scotland. Consumption dykes filled a dual role of clearing stone from the fields and also formed land boundaries. Rough’s cairn appears to have been created around 1850 by Alexander Rough, the owner of Gillahill Farm, in order to clear the stone from two neighbouring fields. The two sections of the dyke survive well, with its structural elements apparently intact. The monumental scale of the dyke represents a large-scale undertaking, and the remains have the potential to tell us more about the construction and use of these monuments. The dyke is visible as two drystone structures, the E section of monumental scale. It lies around 150m S of Bucks Burn and around 1km NE of the Kingswells consumption dykes. The consumption dyke itself is around 290m long E-W and around 30m long N-S on the eastern arm. The structure increases in height along its length, with the W terminal being around 0.5m high to, at the NE corner, around 5m tall. The dyke is around 8m thick at its widest point. The structure consists of 3-4 courses of squared boulders, with the remainder of the height being piled boulders. Originally the dyke existed as a single unit, but a small section of the arm running E-W was removed to allow a path to be laid through the line of the dyke, splitting the structure into two. Such dykes are relatively rare and for the immediate area around Kingswells this example, along with the others are the only known examples around the settlement. The Consumption Dyke at Prime4 is also a Scheduled Monument. It was both a Listed Structure and a scheduled monument but it was delisted by Historic Environment Scotland in 2016 as scheduling was seen as more appropriate for the dyke. This monument represents a post-medieval version of clearance and improvement works that for millennia have been necessary to improve the conditions for agriculture in Scotland. What separates this monument from other forms of clearance (which traditionally have resulted in heaped stone, located away from tilled land) is that it belongs to a post-medieval phenomenon unique to NE Scotland, the clearance or consumption dyke. Sections of carefully built walling (typically being wider at their base than their original height and faced on both sides) started to appear in the late 18th century across Strathdon as a simple and effective way of improving land. At the same time, these dykes were set out to demarcate land and create boundaries for developing agricultural systems, many of which were pioneered in Aberdeenshire. Over 100 individual sections of consumption dyke are known, and Broad Dyke and East Dyke are two of the largest examples of their class. Their width and height (especially in Broad Dyke) are impressively large and, although both sets share several uncommon architectural features such as the paved ways and in-built steps, early map evidence suggest that Broad Dyke is the earlier of the two systems.

22

Documentary records show that the first dyke may have been built by the mid-1850s when a Dr Edmonds owned the Kingswells Estate. It is not clear whether Dr Edmonds commissioned their construction and researchers are still debating whether the paved ways and inbuilt access steps at each dyke terminal are a later addition or part of the original scheme. Either way, this combination of amenity as well as agricultural function is an uncommon feature for this type of monument. This is an interesting insight into Kingswells history and the role it currently plays in understanding some aspects of North East life. I am still working on this as the section of Consumption Dyke adjacent to the A944 at Prime4 needs some restoration work to bring it up to the standard which existed before the Prime4 development commenced. I would like to take the opportunity to wish you all, and your families a very merry Christmas and a prosperous and successful 2018. Kingwells Health Walks Please come and join us. Kingswells Health Walks are short, gentle walks of between one to three miles. They start every Thursday morning at 10.30 from the Community Centre and return after about an hour with the option of a stop for coffee and a chat. The walks are led by local trained volunteers and are free. We go out every week, whatever the weather, except when extreme conditions make it unsafe. You don’t need any special equipment, just sensible, comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for the weather. It is an opportunity to make new friends and explore Kingswells and its surroundings. We are lucky to live in such an attractive area with a variety of pleasant walks. Some folk may already be reasonably fit and active and for them we can walk at a normal pace, but there will always be a leader who is prepared to take beginners and slower walkers, or those with health problems, who prefer to go at a more gentle pace. We have been assessed as Dementia friendly and suitable for the Move More programme of activity for people affected by cancer. Walking has many health benefits for us all, whatever our age or ability. Health walks occur all over Scotland and are supported by Paths For All and Sport Aberdeen and are approved by the NHS. Bring along your family, friends, and neighbours too! We do hope to welcome you soon. However, if you don’t fancy walking, there are all sorts of other activities for people of any fitness level, or with disabilities, of any age and gender, organised by Sport Aberdeen. They use a variety of different venues around Aberdeen. You will find all the information on their website: sportaberdeen.co.uk. Hillwalking in winter Many enthusiastic hillwalkers get up into the hills all year round, and for many winter is the best season especially on those pristine, snow covered, glorious sunny days when the temperature is way below zero and you can see for miles and hear a pin drop. So I thought for this article I would remind us all (and myself!) about the additional things to think about when hillwalking in winter conditions. The most important thing to remember is that walking in winter conditions is completely different to summer conditions and all the items below require consideration. Generally you will be making slower progress, over more difficult ground with a heavier rucksack. By winter conditions we mean in the winter months, November to April/May and with snow on the ground.

26

Daylight is limited especially in the period when we set the clocks to GMT. This means that one should be off the hill by about 4pm, even earlier in December and January, so unless you have early starts in the mornings you are likely to be limited to 6 to 7 hour days. Walking in snow is slow going, especially if it’s knee or even thigh deep. We once attempted the straightforward hill of Clachnaben one winter and could not reach the summit due to floundering around in deep soft snow. You also should allow time for putting crampons on and off, getting ice axes out and checking navigation. All this adds time. There is a real risk of coming off the hill in the dark when combined with the limited daylight hours. Navigation can be a lot trickier. A true whiteout is very hard to navigate in and extremely slow going. People have been known to walk straight over a cliff or through a cornice because they just haven’t seen it. It also affects your balance and I have fallen over while

Check out our website www.gazettemagazines.com

standing still, as there are no reference points at all. Take additional kit. Crampons and ice axe are essential pieces of kit, and even more essential is knowing how to use them! Boots should be B1 or B2 rated to take crampons. In addition you will need more clothing, additional food, good head torch, survival bag and possibly a sleeping bag. Modern down insulated jackets are very good to put on when you stop. You will rapidly cool down, especially if you sweat during uphill exertions. I once dropped my compass in the snow and took ages to find it again - such a critical piece of kit that I now take a spare compass with me. Lastly, know when to turn back. The aim of a good day out is to get back to the car safely - reaching your target hill is only half way through the day and will be there another day if you are at risk of walking after dusk. I’m not trying to be gloomy and the rewards of being in the hills in winter conditions are tremendous but be aware that emergencies occur when a number of factors combine. Any one of the above going wrong may not be too much of a problem but two or more may well result in real danger. We belong to the very active XXL Hillwalking Club with weekends away most months to various parts of Scotland and a local day walk once a month and include winter hillwalking in our programme. We are a very sociable bunch with a number of social activities throughout the year and have our annual dinner and ceilidh coming up soon in Ballater. Nonmembers are very welcome to come along on walks or socials to try us out - see http:// xxlhwc.yolasite.com/ for details. Here’s a suggestion for you: Consider joining a hillwalking club and/or taking a winter skills course as a New Year’s resolution! This is one in a series of articles about hillwalking. The Lowdown on Solution Focused Hypnotherapy One of the questions I’m asked a lot as a solution focused hypnotherapist is: how does it work? Solution focused hypnotherapy involves psychotherapy as well as hypnosis. Neuroscience research has shown that our thoughts, feelings and behaviours are ‘soft wired’ in the subconscious mind and can be both learned and unlearned, and replaced by alternatives. Hypnosis encourages a highly relaxed state of calm and relaxation, similar to meditation. This enables the conscious mind to be bypassed so that the subconscious mind can be accessed.

The subconscious is where negative and unhelpful thought and behaviour patterns are formed, which is why solution focused hypnotherapy can pick up where other therapies fall short. By providing the tools to encourage change, these patterns can be turned into positive ones that help to take back control of thoughts, emotions and behaviours. Changing how you feel and behave is a very realistic achievement with solution focused hypnotherapy, provided you’re fully committed to making this kind of change happen. Solution focused hypnotherapy can help to treat a wide range of issues from anxiety, stress and depression to insomnia, addictions, IBS and even skin conditions.

Coull Green Residents Association calls out for votes to bag a share of bag fund Coull Green Residents Association is bidding to bag a cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative. Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores - being awarded to local community projects. Greenspace Scotland is working with Groundwork to provide support to communities in Scotland. Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant. Coull Green Residents Association is one of the groups on the shortlist and the details of our bid are as follows: Playpark Refurbishment Project Our residents association which incorporates 42 houses in Coull Green, Kingswells was formed in 2004 and a committee elected in order that we could assume responsibility for factoring the common areas of our estate. Since then we have employed a firm of gardeners to maintain the grounds as well as insuring, organising an annual inspection and maintaining the play area. Each household pays an annual fee to cover these costs. It is now nearly 20 years since the play equipment was installed and although we continue to maintain and refurbish as necessary time has taken its toll. Given recent reports concerning the amount of exercise children are taking coupled with increased incidences of childhood obesity we would be reluctant to dismantle the equipment but we have to ensure that the equipment and Looking to advertise ? Call Sue t : 07813 964 875

surroundings meet health and safety standards. We are aiming therefore to provide a safe environment for children to play and socialise by upgrading the equipment and surroundings of our community play area. We have been fortunate to receive some funding towards this from Foundation Scotland who administer a community fund on behalf of Prime Four. However the work we would like to do can only be completed if we are successful in obtaining additional funds through the Bags of Help scheme. Voting is open in all Tesco and Tesco Express stores in Aberdeen and Westhill throughout November and December. Customers can cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop. Please use your votes to support a worthwhile cause in your local area by voting for our project. Tesco’s Bags of Help project has already delivered over £36 million to nearly 8,000 projects up and down the UK. Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups every time they shop. Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions will be awarded funding. Tony McElroy, Tesco’s Head of Communications in Scotland, said: “We are absolutely delighted to open the voting for November and December. There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists and we can’t wait to see these come to life in hundreds of communities.” Funding is available to community groups and charities looking to fund local projects that bring benefits to communities. Anyone can nominate a project and organisations can apply online. To find out more visit www.tesco.com/ bagsofhelp
