Have you had a lovely summer break? I had a very relaxing time. Bit of dancing (of course), catching up with some friends and family and now looking forward to some festival indulgence. Tessa Yau has been busy winning a medal and we wish her well for the next comp at the end of August. On another local note an interesting little snippet about the dykes! Please take the time to read and maybe think twice about scrambling over them. With the new school year about to start, the mum’s start to think about Christmas and of course the wonderful class night out! Congratulations to
Tessa Yau of Kingswells. Tessa who is part of the Aberdeen Sports Village Table Tennis Academy won the Under-16 girls’ gold medal at the
UK Senior Schools Home International in Jersey. The event sees teams from the four home nations, as well as Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man, compete in both team and individual championships. Tessa who is a pupil at Albyn School, having only moved up from U14 last year, battled her way through to the U16 final to face English No1 Bhavika Mistry. Tessa produced another outstanding performance to take the match 3-0 and become UK Girls U16 Schools Champion, in her first season at that age level.
Tessa will now go on to represent Scotland in the UK Schools Games in Loughborough at the end of next month. ASV TT Academy were represented by a total of six players, making up 25% of the Scottish team. As well as Tessa, the players were: Rafal Wiliowski (Banchory Academy), U14 boys team; Dylan Curry (Banchory Academy) U16 boys team; Ethan Chapman (Westhill Academy) U18 boys team; Isla Stott (St Margaret’s School) U18 girls team and Chelsea Wong (Albyn School) U18 girls team.

Hillwalking article - July 2017 - Simon Sawers
Views from the summits What a fantastic summer we’re having - warm, sunny and just enough rain to keep the garden going! This can be a prolific time for hillwalkers with summits all over Scotland just begging to be conquered! For many of us, other things in our busy lives get in the way of escaping to the hills but it’s all a question of prioritisation - let’s get our boots on, plan our routes and get out there! I’m lucky enough to have time for some hillwalking, although it doesn’t feel enough sometimes, and can mention 2 of my trips so far this summer. The first was to the Loch Lochy Munros of Meall na Teanga and Sron a’ Choire Ghairbh from which the views up and down the Great Glen were just stunning. It was like a view from a plane and seeing the size and scale of this huge geological fault line that runs for 62 miles between Inverness and Fort William was both impressive and humbling at the same time. How small are we compared to the huge natural forces that created this? The air was so clear that the full length was visible in one huge panorama that the photo doesn’t do justice to. The second trip was to the Torridon area, well known for its massive and steep Munros of Beinn Alligin, Liathach and Beinn Eighe: However I was there on a Corbett hunting trip and would say that the Corbetts in the area are even better than their only slightly higher brothers. The five Corbetts of Ruadh-stac Beag, Meall a’ Ghiubhais, Beinn an Eoin, Baosbheinn and Beinn Dearg are all just to the North of the Torridon Munros but are far more remote and just as, if not more, challenging. The views of the Munros from these Corbets are both unusual and impressive. In particular, the north side of Beinn Eighe displays the charming grandeur of her ridges, not often seen. These are big days out and the tops are covered in loose angular scree that means slow going. However, I was blessed with excellent weather and plenty of daylight managing 4 of these Corbetts over 2 days, leaving Beinn Dearg for another day. You could say that you can’t do too much hillwalking! However, the more you do the more prone you are to repetitive type injuries and I recently strained the sheath around one of my Achilles tendons. Although not too painful it did run the risk of a worse injury. I went to an excellent local physiotherapist and he worked wonders - several massages and strict instructions for remedial exercises worked a treat. A good hillwalking friend of mine has not been so lucky - he’s been suffering with Morten’s Neuroma in his foot which is a painful nerve condition that has limited his walking for a few months now. Some of these conditions just happen and regular exercise is so important, but this also brings into focus the need to look after our bodies, especially as we get older, and to combine exercise regimes with body maintenance regimes. Kingswells Historic Dykes Kingswells is known for its historic consumption dykes, which date back over 150 years and add so much to the character of the village. Some of the dykes in the village are protected by Historic Scotland whilst others form more modern features and are not. Unfortunately the condition of a number of the dykes within the village has deteriorated in recent years. Although deliberate vandalism cannot be completely ruled out, much of what has happened has come about as a result of normal wear and tear, given their age, alongside people climbing over them, causing stones to fall loose. Some works have been undertaken by the Council in recent years to repair the
dykes that are not protected by Historic Scotland and this has to be welcomed. However, trying to get a dyke which is classified as a “scheduled ancient monument” repaired is both costly and challenging to say the least due to the lack of appropriately skilled dykers who are willing to take on these works. A prime example of this is the East Dyke on which preparations to commence extensive restoration works had started as we went to print. The need for this repair was first identified four years ago. The scope, nature and methodology of the works had to be agreed with Historic Scotland in the first instance then an approved ‘dyker’ had to be commissioned, the first of which pulled out some months after having previously agreed
to undertake the works. The process to find a ‘dyker’ to undertake these works then had to be re-started. The restoration of East Dyke will be welcomed by Kingswells residents but there are other crumbling dykes in Kingswells which also require attention. The cost and the practicalities of repairing these structures cannot be under-stated. Clearly it’s incumbent on all of us to work together to ensure we protect and preserve the heritage of our area, respecting these historic landmarks and minimising the possibility of any future damage to them.

Changes to Bus Service [Shuttle Bus] The Community Council is very pleased that Aberdeen City Council has funded a free shuttle bus (X94) to take passengers to/from the park-and-ride at peak periods. The bus is scheduled to come at 15-minute intervals and loops around Kingswells, taking in stops on Kingswood Drive and Kingswells Crescent. Even better, and thanks to our local councillors, the shuttle service will soon start earlier at 5.50am and finish later at 11pm. At off-peak times, there is a less frequent 94 bus that loops around Kingswells and goes via Woodend to ARI where onward transfers into Aberdeen are available. The Stagecoach 220 provides a similar service to the village via the Lang Stracht. Travellers should consult the relevant timetables for details of the different services. These can be seen on KCC’s website (see above). We welcome these improvements, but the off-peak service around Kingswells is still infrequent and there are no weekend buses serving Kingswells (apart from the park-andride). Aberdeen City councillors are due to meet in September to review bus services generally, and we hope a more permanent solution to the specific issues in Kingswells will be worked out.

this has not persuaded us to change our view. KCC believes that the benefits claimed by AFC are more than outweighed by major disadvantages for our area. We know that this view will not please some people in Kingswells but we have tried hard to consider the ‘big picture’ and do what we feel is best overall for our local community. Westhill & Elrick Community Council and the No Kingsford Stadium group have also studied the additional information from AFC and are still objecting to the development. KCC’s full response to AFC’s additional information can be seen on our website (see above). However, here are the main points: o The application is out-of-line with the local and regional development plans, and is not a national priority. The development will effectively lead to the merging of Kingswells and Westhill into one built-up area. It will encourage further development along the A944. o The visual impact of the stadium building on the surrounding countryside is unacceptable. o Noise will spread over the area from the football pitches, from the Fan Zone outside the stadium, and from any live performances. This will be a very different kind of noise from the current background noise of traffic on the A944.

o In socio-economic terms, poorer areas of Aberdeen, especially around Pittodrie, will be disadvantaged by a move to Kingsford. Moving trade out of the city runs counter to the Council’s plans to re-vitalise the city centre. o AFC has not convinced us how residents of Kingswells will benefit, apart from those who enjoy watching/playing football. o The number of additional permanent jobs created will be small. o There are no clear plans for monitoring crowd behaviour in public places in Kingswells and Westhill and along the A944; no CCTV coverage as in the city. o Major question marks remain over the transportation of fans to/from the stadium, off-site parking, the impact of additional traffic in the area, and the safety of fans on the busy A944. The junction of the AWPR with the A944, hailed as a convenient exit point for visiting supporters, was designed for traffic in 2008, not 2020. Even without a stadium the new AWPR junction is likely to become a real bottleneck at peak times. o KCC does not accept AFC’s case that it faces a “bleak future” unless it leaves Pittodrie. The Dons have recently performed very well as a team with their existing facilities. AFC rejected other possible sites around Aberdeen as they

couldn’t accommodate both a stadium and training pitches. However, there is no evidence from elsewhere that locating them in the same place is necessary to ensure a team’s success. Aberdeen City councillors will probably decide on the planning application around October.
Proposed Retail Park Drum Group has withdrawn (for the time being) its planning application for a retail park on the A944. Several large retailers had strongly objected on the grounds that it would divert trade away from businesses in the city centre. KCC did not object in principle to the retail park but we were unhappy when we saw the size and layout of the development.
Work on the Consumption Dyke You may have noticed Council workmen removing trees and vegetation along the East Dyke on Kingswood Drive. This was to prevent tree roots from damaging the dyke and to prepare it for repair work by a drystane dyker. Please remember that the consumption dykes around Kingswells are part of our local heritage and are designated historic monuments. They were built by farm labourers in the 1800s to use up the many stones and boulders that littered the fields, and to create raised walkways. They must have taken an immense amount of human effort to build. Because of the loose stones they are dangerous to climb on but you can walk quite safely along the top of the East Dyke. Occasionally, parts of the dyke have been vandalised. If you see anyone deliberately damaging a dyke, please call Police Scotland on 101.
New Play Park The children’s play park at Clova Park is scheduled for major improvement, starting in October. The existing play park will be replaced by a bigger and better one on the green space behind the chemist.

Garden View We all love flowers. They’re what gardening is all about and the fact that they tend to be relatively short-lived makes them special. But a garden can’t survive on flowers alone. It needs to look attractive all year round. This is where friendly foliage plants come in to their own. Many non-evergreen plants have beautiful showy foliage between April and November and we’d be mad not to take full advantage of it. Rodgersia pinnata is an excellent example. It has huge, attractive bronze, leathery leaves which are almost sculptural in appearance. As a bonus it sends up feathery cream flowers in the summer. It likes soil which doesn’t dry out. A pebble mulch works brilliantly because it complements the plant. Hostas have truly beautiful leaves but I’ve tried and

failed with them on many occasions because my garden is home to a race of super-slugs who seem able eat hostas faster than I can plant them! I’ve had some success with the variety “Frances Williams” which is less prone to attack though I still need to go on slug patrol every evening! Hostas like a moist soil so if yours is on the dry side work in plenty of compost or manure at planting time and mulch well... preferably with something sharp to act as a deterrent to the slimy brigade. I have had tremendous success with ferns. They are the most useful plant for shade. My favourite is the ostrich-plume fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris. Plant them under trees and shrubs and watch the stunning lime-green foliage unfold each spring. A few years ago I had a wonderful purple New Zealand flax, Phormium tenax. Its bold, dramatic fountains of spiky foliage made it a firm favourite. Unfortunately it succumbed

to an extended period of sub-zero temperatures one winter. I keep meaning to try again. When I do I will but the much hardier green variety...just in case. Many people forget grasses when they think about foliage but there are some wonderfully attractive varieties. Try Miscanthus sinensis “Zebrinus”. The leaves look like green ribbons, striped with yellow and reach chest height. Cut it down to ground level each February. Finally, if you have the space, for real in-yourface foliage try the golden-leaved Catalpa bignonioides “Aurea”. Grow it as a large bush. Prune each stem back to a sprouting bud around knee-height each spring and mulch with manure at the same time. It will reward you with leaves as big as Frisbees! Now that’s really funky foliage. Prime Mover Pathway

I often hear from new clients that they have delayed coming to a class for the first time because they are fearful of what exercises will occur in class. Perhaps they won’t manage it, maybe the class will be hostile to them, or indeed the class may be too easy. Let me reassure anyone who may be thinking of coming to a Prime Mover Pathway community class that nothing could be further from the truth. As the instructor for 20 years, I have to enjoy what I do and so humour and enjoyment is at the forefront of any class I lead. You will be made to feel very welcome.
Between 10-20: Standing Aerobic class is an hour of exercise on your feet. After a good warm up we raise the heart rate by exercising to music, I add strengthening work both for legs, to get out of a chair, and upper body to carry the shopping. There is balance exercise to assist in standing on one leg, as you would do to reach up to your kitchen cupboards. Ending the class with stretches to keep everything moving well.

News from Councillor Delaney... Well we’re in the midst of summer and at the time of writing, it’s impossible to say whether this will be a good or a bad summer. One to enjoy in the back garden or a reason to head off to sunnier climes? It’s always a judgement call as there’s so much to see and do in the UK, but sometimes you just want to get away from it all. Having said that, this autumn and winter will bring a smile to many people’s faces in Kingswells or at least those of you who cannot currently get connected to superfast broadband because it is now happening. As residents are aware, I have been campaigning for improved broadband for the last five years and have assisted around 60 households to get connected in cases where they had previously been told this was not possible. During this time I have been in regular contact with Aberdeen City Council, Digital Scotland, BT and civil servants pressing the case for full coverage in Kingswells and thankfully this has finally paid off. A solution was developed last year for the Exchange Only lines in Kingswells. These are the ones which are directly connected to the Westhill Exchange and do not go through street cabinets. EO lines usually had no internet or speeds of 1Mbps or less. Most of these homes can now get the faster broadband but there have been capacity issues in Fairley Road, Kingswood Avenue and adjoining areas as a result of Openreach not having installed enough lines! I have raised this incompetence at the highest levels and the matter will hopefully be addressed very soon. The remaining lines are those on the TPON system which operates through

street cabinets in the Derbeth, Wellside and Concraig areas, for which we were consistently told there was currently no solution. The good news is that these lines are in the process of being upgraded with a target completion date of the end of 2017. This will result in the remaining 774 homes in Kingswells village having access to high speed broadband. There remain a number of rural addresses which have not yet been upgraded. Some of these will be upgraded, others will experience improved speeds (on standard broadband) and a few addresses will experience no improvement. Clearly there remains work to be done and this can be re-visited once we have more detail of affected addresses. Buses remain an issue and there’s been some improvement with the hours of the 94 having been extended to run from 6am – 11pm on weekdays. Subject to approval by the Traffic Commissioner this extended service will commence on 31st July and run until the end of March. Although my preference was for a more permanent solution to be brought forward much sooner, I was willing to support this proposal on the basis that it allows residents working different hours to get to work and to get home and it offers a limited evening service, both of which were needed urgently. However, this is not the answer. What we need is a service which allows Kingswells residents to get to and from their destinations within an acceptable period of time as it can typically take people up to 3 hours (round trip) to get to and from work using up to three buses to reach their destination. And, as I’ve said many times before, we also need a weekend service.

Had Liberal Democrat budget proposals for £500,000 to be allocated for supported bus services across the city been supported by councillors in February, we would not be in this mess in Kingswells and a solution would have been in place months ago. I find this infuriating to say the least, given how slowly things move in the Council. It’s also somewhat unfortunate that I’ve been misrepresented on the matter of funding for bus services in Kingswells as those proposals are of course a matter of public record. Should you be in any doubt about where the truth lies, the facts are on Page 13 of the minute of the budget meeting of February 2017 - Item (r) refers. So, lets move on positively. It has now been agreed that proposals will come forward to the Finance Policy & Resources Committee in September on how to address gaps in the commercial bus network, including Kingswells. It has been a busy start to the 2017/2018 programme for us. You might be thinking who are the Round Table and what do they do? We are a bunch of lads aged from 18 to 45ish that meet up on a regular basis to ensure that we can make a difference within our local communities. We give our time so we can help those less fortunate than us or maybe groups or individuals just needing a helping hand to aspire to hit their dreams. It’s not as stuffy as everyone thinks it is... we do normal things like drink beer, have a laugh and even participate in new events like Wheelchair Basketball. We have fun while making a difference. This year alone we have helped buy a new junior wheelchair for the Grampian Flyers wheelchair basketball Club, actively support one of Scotland’s aspiring Archery prospects Robyn Geddes and sponsored an award at a Gala Dinner that helped buy much needed equipment for a mother for her son to help him walk with her. From mind-crazy chatter to mindful calm
(part 1)
Sometimes we might find that our busy minds take over and we feel stressed, overwhelmed, over thinking or anxious. So over the next two issues, I’d like to share some tips that I find useful to quieten a “monkey mind,” perhaps with negative thoughts, and find peace and quiet even in noisy, busy situations. Give them a go to see which works best for you and the more you practice them, the more the neuroplasticity of the brain changes to help the mind get used to being calm and focused.
Focusing on the breath -
Take three conscious, deep breaths down to the belly and feel the belly expand with each in-Belly breathing breath. With one hand on the stomach and the other on the chest, aim for the lower hand to come out with each inhalation and not the higher one. (When we’re stressed, we tend to breath from our chests so there’s less oxygen getting into and around our bodies.) Sigh on the exhale. Or alternatively, breathe into your back – imagining the back of the rib cage and lungs filling up with oxygen, expanding and spreading out the back. Stretch Adjust your posture by imagining a string pulling up your head towards the ceiling like a puppet but keeping the head level, relax with your shoulders down and back slightly. Feel the spine lengthen and enjoy a good stretch. Say Thanks Find something to be grateful for. Even in really tough times, we can find something to be thankful for even it’s just having a roof over our head and shoes on our feet. By just saying ‘thank you’ repeatedly with some feeling behind it, our mood can lift and our minds settle down. Dance! Turn any anxious or overstimulated energy into a dance move. Whether it’s the slosh, a shimmy, a salsa step or the Macarena, just own it. Dancing lowers our stress hormone (cortisol) level and boosts happiness and creative thinking. In a public place? Then do it in your head instead as even just imagining ourselves dancing gets us out of the repetitive negative thinking cycle and we can think more clearly. Unplug Step away from the device or laptop and take a break from the tech to let the mind recover. The feeling we have to keep up with everyone and everything online is exhausting and the brain needs quiet time to develop, grow and retain memories. A full in-box can be stressful and five minutes away from it can help our perspective and ability to prioritise. Create Do something creative, such as drawing, writing a poem, colouring in, making a meal or even just some doodling. We can get lost in the flow and this clears our mind of the thought patterns causing us distress. Rotary International Would you like to be part of an organisation which supports the needs of communities locally, nationally and internationally? If so, becoming a member of Westhill & District Rotary Club could be the thing for you. We are involved with organising Young Musician and Young Speaker competitions, Youth Leadership camps, Senior Citizens Christmas dinner as well as other activities. We
are also involved in various local galas and assist at some Highland Games. Wherever there is a disaster (eg earthquakes overseas, flooding at home) the Rotary family supplies aid. Membership of our Club is open to any person regardless of age, sex or creed. The only requirement is a desire to be of service in the community. Whilst most of our members come from Westhill a number come from the wider District. Look at our Website and Facebook pages to find out more.
