A note from Sue... Well I’ve been very busy since I last spoke to you. I had a clan gathering at the 4th Room Lounge at Kingswells. Had the best buffet ever, thank you Julie and George and met and introduced lots of long lost relatives. Being part of the Pushing out The Boat Production Team I went to the Phoenix Hall at Newton Dee for the launch last weekend. What an amazing venue! It was lovely to meet the authors, poets and artists who make the yearly magazine what it is. Priced at only £6 it really is exceptional value for money! I have copies for sale, just email me and I’ll arrange to come and drop one off with you. A great little stocking filler! I of course enjoy my dancing, and there is a lovely offer if you want to give Ceroc a try see page three and cut out the article and bring it along to your first class at any of the venues. What dance classes are screaming out for are “MEN”! The ladies of Aberdeen need you. You can be any age, shape, ability, tuck your pride in your back pocket, have a whisky before you come in for Dutch courage if needed and don’t forget your sense of humour. I can guarantee that the first few classes will be frustrating and you will think you “can’t” do it but keep going until at least class six as suddenly you’ll find “you can do it”. From that point on you will want to learn more and more. The other class I attend is West Coast Swing, held at the Northern Hotel Ballroom on a Wednesday evening from 8pm
til 10pm beginner’s class from 8pm. This is more technical but very, very addictive. So if there are any men out there who are fed-up of gardening, golfing, fishing, the pub, then come along and give dancing a shot. It’ll keep you fit. You’ll make new friends. You’ll be able to show off at your work’s party and women love a man that can dance! There are loads of other dance classes all over Aberdeen from Ballet to Ceilidh something for everyone. This issue of the magazine is the first of our bimonthlies. So our next magazine will be November and December which is ideal for promoting your Christmas offerings to our readers. We would love to have some of your products on show in our annual LOCAL Christmas Gift Guide so please send in a snapshot of some items, tell us the price, where we can buy and let’s get everyone shopping locally this year. PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy) is a rare condition but deadly. It's a progressive and uncurable degeneration of the nerve cells in the brain. It is very difficult to diagnose, often initially diagnosed as Parkinson's, stroke, brain tumour and Alzheimer's. As it progresses there are increasing problems including swallowing, slurred speech, recurrent falls, irratibility and apathy, slowness of response and severe difficulties with walking, and it becomes increasing difficult to look up or down, and incontinence. The average life expectancy is around seven years from the onset. There is no cure. Research into the prevalence of the disease suggests that there around 4,000 people in the UK living with the condition at any one time but neurologists believe the figure could be as high as 10,000. I first got to know about this disease when the partner of a friend of mine was finally diagnosed with it and therefore I know how devastating it is for the patient, the family and the carer (the enormous burden on the carer). She has set up a PSP Support Group in Aberdeen which is open to all, past carers, or for people who wish to raise funds and awareness of the condition. Lee Donald has just completed what's probably the toughest event on the planet 'Tough Mudder' which took place in August at Dalkeith. But prior to going - she got married and moved house! Lee managed to raise over £500 for Help for Heroes. Her team (Tough Mudder Fu*kers) also achieved their goal of making it around in under 3hours - a great achievement! They were up against barbed wire, ice tanks, electric shocks, high walls, dangerous terrain and A LOT of mud! Method Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/ Gas Mark 6. Place the oil in a large non-stick roasting tin and heat in the oven for 5 minutes. Add the potatoes to the tin and toss to coat in the hot oil. Roast for 20 minutes, turning once. Add the peppers and tomatoes to the roasting tin and toss to coat in the hot oil. Make a space in the tin and add the monkfish fillets. Return the roasting tin to the oven for 10 minutes.
Mediterranean Fish Bake This is a great one-pan dish full of fresh flavour. Monkfish is quite pricey but the meaty flesh is delicious and bakes really well, however you can replace it with cod loin, salmon steaks or thick pieces of haddock fillet if you prefer. Serve with a green salad and warmed ciabatta bread to mop up all the lovely herb and lemon flavoured pan juices. Ready in 50 minutes Serves 4

2 tbsp olive oil (choose a good quality fruity one) 350g small new potatoes, halved 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 1 green pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 225g small plum tomatoes, halved 4 monkfish fillets (each weighing about 150g) 50g butter, softened Pared rind and juice from 1 small lemon, plus extra wedges to serve • 1 tbsp fresh chopped oregano • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Dot the butter over the fish fillets and sprinkle over the lemon rind, juice and oregano. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and roast for a further 5-10 minutes until the fish is just cooked through and the potatoes and peppers are tender. Slice each monkfish fillet and arrange with the potatoes, peppers and tomatoes on four warmed serving plates. Spoon over the pan juices and serve immediately with lemon wedges.
TIP : Replace the peppers with sliced courgettes, chunks of celery and baby button mushrooms, if liked.

expect it to wash out after approximately 18 to 20 washes – and remember, although permanent colours have a lot more staying power, they are much harsher on your hair, so if it is in bad condition, stick to a semipermanent dye. What colour is your hair? Reds are notoriously difficult to maintain. If you have a red hue then you will have to be prepared to colour your hair more frequently. Reds fade fast; washing, blow-drying, styling, sunlight and chlorine all contribute to your colour fading quickly. Check whether your colour is permanent or semipermanent. Many women visit the salon and don’t know which dye is being applied to their hair. After having your hair coloured wait at least 48 hours before washing to protect your new shade - this extra time will allow the colour to settle. Always wash your locks with water at a cool temperature because hot water opens the cuticles on the hair shaft, allowing dye to escape - cooler water will give your colour more longevity. Let’s Talk Wine ... O is for Origin There are so many things that shape a wine and most wine drinkers will have their favourite grape or country or region. The style of the wine can change by crossing the road to a different vineyard. The grape has its flavour profile which can be influenced by the soil and it’s make up and environment, the French term is ‘terroir’. The angle of the vineyards and sun exposure of the vines will affect the ripeness, flavour and acidity levels. The nurturing of the grapes in the vineyard to produce good grapes is so important. There is also the influence of the wine maker and his skills in the winery. In European regions, local legislation indicates permitted grapes and viticultural techniques and may also legislate on use of oak. This ensures that styles remain true to the region. Across the wine world, much research is done to match the right grape with climates and soils and regionality is also now very apparent across the wine countries of the New World. For me wine is all about origin, I want to taste those influences that make each wine individual. Carol Brown is an Aberdeen based Member of the Association of Wine Educators and the Circle of Wine Writers. She will be hosting a tasting of Lebanese wines in Aberdeen on 9th October and on 30th October introduces a new course to Aberdeen – Essential Wine Tasting which is a 5 week evening course. Plumbers are cheaper while the weather is warmer and there are still offers on insulation and boilers so start work now before winter arrives and the prices go up. Switch your bills now It’s a great time to switch to a cheaper provider as the major providers typically start to increase their prices any day now, just in time for winter. Find a copy of your last gas and electricity bills, go to the energy-switching page on Moneymagpie.com and find a cheaper deal for yourself. It’s often worth considering one of the smaller suppliers to obtain a better price. You could save up to £60 a year by moving to a smaller supplier. Sainsbury’s Energy, First Utility, Ovo Energy and The Co-Operative Energy all trumped the major suppliers for cheaper tariffs in early 2013. If you want to stick to one of the major suppliers you may be eligible for discounted bills through the government’s ECO (Energy Company Obligation) scheme. The ECO scheme offers heating and insulation improvements for low-income and means tested households. You’re eligible for the scheme if you receive certain benefits; see www.gov. uk/energy-company-obligation for the full list. You can apply through the Energy Saving Trust on 0300 123 1234. Once you have switched to the best-priced deal, the next step is to make sure your home retains heat with the efficiency of an old-time dragon. Boilers If your boiler is coming to the end of its life, now is a good time to have it replaced. Most boilers over 15 years old can be repaired to keep them working, but they will be less efficient than modern ones. Even factoring in the cost of a new boiler you could save money by replacing it now. Also, you could receive up to £270 cashback for updating your boiler through the new government energy improvement scheme, The Green Deal Cashback Scheme. The scheme will give you money back if you make energy efficiency improvements in your home such as installing a new boiler, having loft or cavity wall insulation done, improving heating, draught proofing, double glazing and installing renewable energy such as solar panels. The Green Deal is available to households in England and Wales and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. You

can apply even if you are renting privately or in social housing providing the landlord can pay for installations costs. Firstly, have a Green Deal assessment carried out on your property which will provide you with a report of what could be improved. Then agree to a quote or Green Deal plan with a Green Deal Provider. You can find them online through www. greendealorb.co.uk/consumersearch. Once you have agreed the quote, apply for the Green Deal Cashback Voucher at www.gdcashback.decc.gov.uk. Make sure you have the work completed before the voucher expires and you’ll receive your cashback within 30 days. Insulation Now is a great time to get up-to-date insulation as it’s a quiet period for installers. Insulation materials are also much cheaper to buy in the summer and early autumn when the demand is low, so it’s worth checking out B&Q or Homebase. Efficient insulation can cut the cost of heating and cooling by 40%, while loft insulations save an average 20% on your energy bills annually. Don’t forget you can also find loft insulation vouchers on websites like Groupon as well as applying for the Green Deal. Draught-proofing Draught-proofing is one of the cheapest and most efficient ways to save energy in your home. The Energy Saving Trust claims you can save £55 a year. You could save more money by taking the DIY route; materials should set you back around £100 while a professional might cost double this. Some older properties with single glazing will be more difficult to draught-proof however and if you are not comfortable with your DIY skills, hiring a professional could save you money in the long run. Check with your home insurance policy before carrying out work yourself to ensure that you are covered for any mishaps. Plumbers Summer and early autumn is a slower time of year for plumbers so you could find the rates more favourable, and you’ll also be able to get the work completed quickly. Have any pipe repairs or radiator work done now to eliminate cold spots and fix wasteful dripping taps. It’s also worth having the plumbers in just to check everything is ship shape for winter. The Aberdeen Arts Coalition are hosting Aberdeen's first ever inclusive arts festival on 20th & 21st September 2013. The Arts Coalition are a partnership of arts and disability organisations who are working together to promote opportunities for adults with learning disabilities to realise their hopes and dreams, and to flourish within the arts. The Festival will showcase a wide range of talented acts, featuring people with and without disabilities. Acts at the two-day Cowdray Hall festival will include Leanne Smith, Tonik, Mixit, SCAT and 5th Avenue – an eclectic mix of North-east culture , including disco, pop, jazz, blues, and Scottish traditional and new music. The festival will also showcase comedy from John Scott, along with art, film and photography exhibitions from established local artists. Satellite events will be staged in various venues in the city, including Gerry Jablonski and the Electric Band at the Lemon Tree, Dan Leckie at the Atheneum, and live comedy, art, dance and drumming workshops. GET INclusive has been organised by the Aberdeen Arts Coalition with Aberdeen City Council, and is supported by many local and national artists and bands including world-renowned percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie.
