Handing Over the Planning Red Pen
A
fter nearly six years casting my eye over some 1000 planning applications in the Lower Deeside area, the time has come to let someone else have a go at making sure that development proposals for our Community Council area fit with the needs of the community. It has been interesting and fun (seriously!) getting an insight into the wide range of activity that takes place around us. My thanks for all the questions and supportive comments I received. O
ne of the advantages of editing a very local magazine is being let off the hook from commenting on national issues. There is a quagmire of messy political situations to choose from with the ‘B’ word still top of the list. Goodness knows what the political landscape will look like or how many more votes we’ll make throughout 2019. In? Out? Deal? No deal? Election? Referendum? Luckily, instead, I can focus on local concerns and have the pleasure of mentioning a refurbished Music Hall, a progressing new harbour and art gallery and, of course, our wonderful new bypass (that one makes me want to jump up and down, cheering). I am still enjoying the novelty of an easier, safer, faster drive and was also impressed by my view of the road from Kingshill Woods. (I’m easily pleased.) Having started off from the woods in Cults we walked almost continuously through woodland to King’s Seat near Kingswells. As well as the road network, we were also treated to a spectacular view over Aberdeen and the coastline at Portlethen. Well worth a visit and a pleasant walk too. As you know, MBC News has included many local walks over the last few years but unfortunately this issue will feature our last one. If you missed any of them, you can view routes and descriptions of 12 walks on the Community Council website, http://cbmcommunity.org.uk/. Please see the article from the Community Council Footpath Group in this issue for more information. We really are so lucky to have such accessible countryside on our doorstep and praise has to go to the local groups who maintain the woods, paths and signage. If you would like to get involved, please get in touch with the CC Footpath Group, Alternatively, if you would prefer to focus on the woodland itself, there is an article inside from the Woodland Group who would love to welcome enthusiasts along to their events. As ever, this issue has contributions from the many clubs and groups within the MBC area, as well as an article on Ronnie Watt’s OBE trip to Japan, so plenty for everyone to enjoy. CULTS BIELDSIDE AND MILLTIMBER COMMUNITY COUNCIL News from the Cults Bieldside and Milltimber Community Council Everything appears to progress slower than expected, except time! That is a sobering thought very applicable to the story of the AWPR. Last year I forecast confidently that we would see the completion of the bypass in 2018 – wrong! When you read this, you will hopefully, finally have been able to drive its full distance, but who knows. At least we will be able to evaluate its impact on local traffic at some time during 2019. Your community council has entered the new year in a new formation after the threeyearly elections of October last year. We are starting with a smaller team of community councillors, partly as a result of a change in the City’s scheme which reduced the number
of available posts from 20 to 16, but also because a number of councillors stepped down at this junction. Many thanks to Nurul Ali, Nabilah Ali, Christine Anderson, Bea Cameron, Norman Burt and Kirstin Gove for their contributions to community life. We also, sadly, lost our vice chair Derek Robb who passed away last October. Derek had been a community councillor since 2005 and was a great force in the community. His determination to get things done was most clearly demonstrated in the Cults Carol Concert he organised for several years (including this year). He will be greatly missed. Welcome to Tane Moorhouse, the only new member joining the community council. He has volunteered to be our focal point for the tricky subject of Youth and Education and I am looking forward to working with him and the other re-elected councillors. Looking back to the last months of 2018, I hope you all enjoyed the first formal Christmas lights switch-on event and the traditional Carol Concert. The former celebrated in great style the massive achievement of arranging 33 sponsored
Christmas lights for our area. The latter provided the usual pre-Christmas cheer and also generated a donation of £376 to VSA's mental health projects. The Community Plan has been on our website for a number of months now and the community council has reviewed all comments received and will update the Plan as required. This is an exciting long-term project that will hopefully generate many new ideas for our area. By testing these against established values and trends in an open forum we will hopefully be able to maintain a workable Plan – i.e. a solid, generally accepted and always up-to-date basis to respond to environmental initiatives and challenges in our part of the world. The Community Council needs your input. The Plan mentioned above is just one way to establish what is needed and what is not needed in our area. Please speak to a community councillor, write to the secretary or attend a CC meeting if there is anything you wish to bring to our attention. Your views are important to us. Guus Glass

CULTS BIELDSIDE AND MILLTIMBER COMMUNITY COUNCIL Planning Matters! I am looking forward to my new role as Planning Liaison Officer (PLO) for CBM Community Council having taken over from Peter Roberts. Many thanks to Peter for his hard work over recent years and for an extensive and well-organised handover. Peter, you are going to be a hard act to follow! Our area continues to be much sought after by developers who appear to be having little difficulty in attracting interest in their properties. In recent times, this has meant a lot of work reviewing applications for the major developments such as Oldfold and Friarsfield, and this will continue as we start to review new proposals for the 2022 Local Development Plan in the New Year. We review planning applications for issues likely to concern the community; certainly including new major housing developments but also possible infringements of established planning policies. We rarely comment on individual applications such as house extensions or tree works unless there are obviously wider community concerns, for example proposals requiring construction access along the Deeside Way. In all cases, the PLO drafts an objection or comment for consideration by the Community Council and, if approved, sends it to Aberdeen City Council Planning Department. There were 140 Planning Applications in Cults, Bieldside and Milltimber in 2018, with 40 in the last quarter. We made no further objections or comments in 4Q2018 leaving the total at 12 for the year. Here is the latest position on major developments in our area: Contlaw Road – Stewart Milne Group have proposed the development of a site

on Contlaw Road (OP112 in the Local Development Plan) for ‘up to 40’ homes, despite the Scottish Reporter’s indicative recommendation for 10 homes. A detailed planning application has not been withdrawn as suggested in the last MBC News and should have been submitted by the time you read this. Countesswells – the construction of Phase 1 development, around 1260 homes, continues with around 200 occupied so far. There are now five developers working on the site – Stewart Milne Group, Kirkwood Homes, Barratts, CHAP and Hillcrest. The consortium is hoping to start work on the road to Kingswells roundabout by end 2018. The application submitted for Block N5, 123 homes has now been approved. The NHS has been offered space in block C4 for a temporary health facility. The site for the first primary school is ready for construction, and ACC has committed to a summer 2021 completion for the first Primary School with capacity for 400 pupils. Karen Watt of Stewart Milne is the Community Liaison contact. The first retail unit has now gone on the market for lease with occupation hoped for by spring of this year. Culterhouse Road – a planning application has been submitted for the development of 11 detached homes on the open land on the right as you turn the sharp bend near East Lodge. The ACC Planners’ decision is pending. Friarsfield – work is well under way on Phase 2, which comprises 109 houses and 12 apartments (phase 1 is 73 homes and eight apartments). Traffic calming measures will be put along Friarsfield Road once the link road is open. CALA has now purchased Sunnyside and a planning application is expected in spring this year. Our other Friarsfield sites continue with Craigbank moving into the west phase,

Morkeu starting and the Link Road being brought through to Craigton Road. Friarsfield Road will remain open but the junction at the top of Jacob’s Ladder will be modified. Stewart Milne Group has withdrawn its planning application for the completion of Phase 3 at Friarsfield, which was for between 80 – 100 homes and would have completed the overall development. We await clarification on how this phase will be progressed. Meanwhile, CALA has put forward a proposal for inclusion in the next Local Development Plan for nearly 300 homes which would extend the Friarsfield development North to Craigton Road. Inchgarth Road Development – this proposed development for 95 homes, a 50bed care home and retail facilities, as well as a new link road between North Deeside Road and Inchgarth Road, is still pending determination by the City Council. McCarthy & Stone Development at 3 South Avenue, Cults – The planning application 160552 for 21x2-bedroom apartments on the site of the house at 3 South Avenue which was refused by ACC Planning was granted permission on appeal by the Scottish Reporter. The application is subject to a variation of the title condition which has been refused by the Lands Tribunal. Land behind Bieldside House and Bieldside Lodge - The ACC Planning Development Committee granted only conditional approval for the proposed new house. The developer appealed to the Scottish Government for removal of the stringent conditions around construction. The Reporter’s decision of 11 Dec 2018 discharged most of the conditions set by the ACC Planners but retained an important one related to maintaining the integrity of the boundary wall and gazebo of Bieldside House during construction. The Reporter was apparently comfortable with the

CULTS BIELDSIDE AND MILLTIMBER COMMUNITY COUNCIL modern design of the proposed new house but left it to the council to instigate proper controls on Deeside Way access during construction, which has been of great concern to the Community Council. Milltimber South – submission of a Masterplan for the site by Bancon Homes is still awaited. Oldfold Farm – work on Phase 1 for 60 homes continues and 57 are now sold. The remaining three should be concluded by the end of February. We welcome all the new residents to our area. Phase 2 for 166 homes has been approved and 25 homes are already sold. The new primary school is due to be available by the time 250 – 300 homes have been sold though pressure on places at Milltimber may lead to the City Council working with CALA to bring plans forward. AWPR – well it finally opened on Wednesday 12 December (at least between Craibstone and Stonehaven)! It is probably too early to fully assess the impact on peak hour traffic, but initial impressions are that the North Deeside Road junction with Milltimber Brae is working well and that there is less traffic on established cross-town routes like Kirk Brae, Baillieswells Road and the B979. Certainly, getting between Lower Deeside and Aberdeen Airport and Stonehaven is considerably easier! City Centre Master Plan - the Reference Group established to help provide input to proposals for City Centre Development meets quarterly and the last meeting was on 12 December 2018.

Many of them will be familiar as retreads having failed to make it into the current and previous LDPs. As Peter described in detail in the last issue of MBC News, developers have put in proposals for many more houses than are required by the LDP and a high proportion of them are in the CBM area or close enough to our boundaries to be of concern. The Community Council will be reviewing and commenting on each proposal in the Main Issues Report irrespective of whether the City Council planners support them or not. Residents will also be able to submit their views to Aberdeen City Council on the inclusion of any proposed developments – we hope you will do so. Strategic Development Plan (SDP) and Local Development Plan (LDP) – We submitted a broadly supportive comment to the SDP team but criticising the lack of detail on public transport interventions alluded to in the plan but not elaborated. The NESTRANS Regional Transport Strategy must be about due for review (last refreshed in 2013) so we hope for more detail in that. We eagerly await the LDP Main Issues Report (MIR) which should have been published by the time you read this. Meanwhile, the new developer proposals can be seen on the Aberdeen City Council website

Wishing all readers of this newsletter a Happy New Year, I hope that everybody enjoyed good company and festive cheer over the holiday period. The end of the year always offers a chance to take stock and reflect on the twelve months that have passed and look ahead at what is to come. Here in Aberdeen, we should finally see the full completion and opening of the city bypass. There is no doubt that this development has caused a great deal of disruption and has split public opinion. The roadworks and delays have seemed endless, and there has been a substantial impact on many landowners – not to mention on the River Dee. However, drivers and local businesses are already starting to see the benefit in terms of reduced journey times. More generally, we are continuing to see signs of improvement in the local economy in the northeast, particularly in the oil and gas sector. Major projects – aside from the AWPR – are working towards completion. These include the impressive new ‘Event Complex’ replacement for the Aberdeen
Exhibition and Conference Centre in Bucksburn and the city harbour expansion at the Bay of Nigg. It is great to see such investment in our city. I know my party colleagues at Aberdeen City Council are working hard to make sure that continues. Recent press reports have also suggested that the property market is also starting to shift. Leading figures from companies like Aberdein Considine and Ledingham Chalmers have said the conditions have not been as good for more than 20 years for those looking to invest. All of that should be welcomed after what has been a difficult few years for the local economy. History tells us the north-east is nothing if not resilient. We have weathered severe economic downturns before, and I am sure the region will continue to prosper in future. Beyond local issues, 2018 was a turbulent and eventful year for national politics. The coming weeks will be very important for the direction in which this country will head. My own views on Brexit are well-known, but I respect the fact that other MPs – and indeed many people across the country – have very different views. I hope that we can all agree that we want the best for this country.

I believe that, as parliamentarians, we have a duty to the British public to respect the result of the EU referendum in 2016. That means leaving the EU, forging a new partnership with our European friends and seizing new opportunities in other parts of the world. Whatever 2019 brings, I hope that in day-to-day life, as well as in politics, we can see a bit more civility and consideration of others. One of the biggest changes in recent years has been the rise in social media and the use of technology to connect people around the world. That has brought many positives, but it has also led to a huge increase in cyber-bullying among young people and outright hostility between those with different points of view. I have been on the receiving end of some truly hateful abuse on social media. As a politician, I have always accepted a certain amount of rough and tumble. I have no issue with robust debate. However, we have increasingly seen the use of ugly language, threats and intimidation online. I hope that 2019 will be a year in which we start to treat one another a little better.

Aberdeen 365 - an officer has been appointed to lead the Aberdeen 365 programme. Queen Street development – discussions are taking place with the relevant parties. Provost Skene House – tenders have been received for the work and these are being assessed. It is hoped to begin work in 1Q2019. Art gallery – still working through some contractual issues. There will then be several months to prepare the art works for exhibition, so the gallery is not expected to open to the public until mid-2019. Music Hall - work has been completed and the venue is open. Union Street – the third deep clean programme of 2018 has been completed. More are being considered for 2019 if funding is available. Union Square – the planning application for expansion has been approved, subject to conditions, one of which is a requirement for improvements to the bus station. There is no news on when the developer, Hammerson, will bring forward proposals. Union Terrace Gardens – tenders for the work have been assessed and contractual negotiations are taking place. Golden Square – plans are on hold until the completion of the City Parking Study and agreement on way forward The Car Parking Study – there is a long history to this and a decision has been taken to merge the work with the current study into a roads’ hierarchy for Aberdeen city. There is some sense in that and we can expect some consultation on the roads element during January and February 2019. Final reporting is expected in April 2019. Aberdeen Music Hall – Jane Speirs, of Aberdeen Performing Arts, gave an interesting presentation on the work done to renovate the Music Hall; to create a new hall for a new generation. Aberdeen Performing Arts is a limited company with charitable status which runs three venues, three festivals and one production company with 250 staff altogether. The organisation has a turnover of £12 million and they have 450,000 people attending events. The work on the Music Hall was carried out by architect, BDM and Keir Contracting. The hall closed in April 2016 and re-opened in December 2018. A few problems were encountered; when the floor was excavated to put in a new studio it was found the foundations were just rubble and sand, so they had to be reinforced. Some of the fit-out work

was done in parallel with the construction work to make up time to open in December. The work has created; New public access and box office Restored and renovated concert hall New 100-person capacity studio Upgraded artist accommodation New restaurant and café bar Improved disabled access and toilet facilities Some £7million funding was raised though: public sector partners; Aberdeen Performing Arts reserves; 20 business sponsors; nine trusts and foundations; and public donations. Several events have been planned to celebrate the reopening of the venue: Big Sky Studio; Stepping In digital art space; Heritage interpretation; and signature festivals and events. APA are targeting 200 performances and concerts during the year with 120,000 people attending. Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS) – Six schools in the city were invited to develop ideas on how to improve the look of Union Street. An event was held at the Tivoli on 24 November to review their work. Six pupils from the Middleton Park School presented their views and ideas at the December meeting. Jamie McNamara, who is the Project Officer for CARS, then gave an update. Some £2.4million is available for landlords to request a grant to help with shopfront improvements along Union Street, with a grant of up to 60% of the cost being available. There are 12 projects under consideration or being worked. A training programme has been introduced for apprentices to work on building repairs and restoration; two apprentices have also been taken on to help with the programme administration. It has been difficult identifying some landlords and while it has taken nearly a year to get things moving, projects are now starting. The CARS grant funding is restricted to the older granite building on Union Street e.g. does not cover the old BHS building.

Regarding the BHS building, a question was raised about the future plans for the covered market. It is not yet clear what the future plans will be for the site and Planning responded that they will need to address what is submitted. City Living Project - ACC Planning have received six or seven enquiries about residential development in the city after the City Council adopted the recommendation to waive developer contributions on affordable housing, built in the city centre, for two years. Queens Square Redevelopment (Sepi? And Cecilia?) – a collaboration between Aberdeen University, RGU and the University of Florida is looking at the design of sites in Aberdeen. Recent focus has been on the design of Queen Street. The team have created a video describing the collaboration process, which can be found on YouTube. It is hoped to continue the collaboration during 2019 and some funding is required to cover the accommodation and travel costs for the students. The ACC attention has been on staffing the team to work on the redevelopment and establishing contacts with other public bodies involved. Broad Street – efforts are being made to identify suitable locations for the four statues designed by North East College students for installation in Broad Street and it is hoped they will be in place shortly after the Christmas period.

News from Councillors Your councillors would like to wish you all seasonal greetings and a very happy and prosperous New Year. As you read this article, Christmas will be well and truly over, decorations packed away, everyone well rested and new year resolutions made. So please spare a thought for those in the council who worked tirelessly to keep services running over this period, many of whom volunteered to forgo their Christmas leave entitlement. Many of you will have made new year resolutions and your councillors hope that some Deeside Way cyclists will have seen the light on these dark mornings and will have resolved to be more considerate to others on this shared path. The Deeside Way forms an element of this council’s active travel program and as such is for the enjoyment of all who enjoy fresh air and want to leave their motor car at home. We would be very grateful if everyone using this valuable local facility does so with care and respect for others. The southern section of the AWPR from Craibstone to Stonehaven was opened to traffic early December 2018. The reduction in traffic to ‘hotspots’ such as the bridge of Dee and Anderson Drive is becoming apparent. And whilst those in Aberdeen change their normal driving routes and make more use of the AWPR, we expect the general traffic situation across the city to continue to improve. Aberdeen Roads Limited have promised to open the Don crossing as soon as associated bridge repairs have been completed which will allow the entire 56km of AWPR to be fully open. This in turn will allow ACC to implement a new roads hierarchy and start the introduction of low emission zones. Many of you will recently have read the P&J’s (mis)interpretation of ACC reported collected waste for 2018 which they claimed showed a marked increase in the amount of waste that the city was producing. The opposite is true, and Aberdeen is reducing the amount of
waste it produces. The newspaper article then projected collected waste had increased from 87,000 tonnes in 2017 to 101,000 tonnes in 2018. The Aberdeen Green group convenor responsible for this assertion believed the increase in collected waste was attributable to the new mixed waste facility. It is possible that too much Christmas cheer was responsible for this view. The person responsible for these claims shouldn’t be too worried though as the new mixed waste facility can handle 20 tonnes of waste per hour and is very efficient at sorting bottles and cans along with all other waste and achieves about 97% sorting efficiency. Waste that cannot be recycled has previously been sent to landfill which attracts a landfill tax of £80/tonne. Aberdeen city council’s strategy is to cost effectively divert non-recycled waste from landfill and send it to energy from waste (EfW) facilities for disposal. The waste diverted from landfill is termed refuse derived fuel (RDF) and is currently shipped to Denmark and Sweden where it is disposed of in ultraclean EfW plants. In order to reduce this disposal cost, Aberdeen City Council plan to have their own EfW plant. Final bids have been received for the EfW and a purchase order is imminent. The build-out is anticipated to take three years and it is hoped the plant will be operational by Q1 2022. The EfW will dispose of waste that cannot be recycled and will also generate a considerable amount of electricity and heat. Much of the heat will ultimately be used in the Aberdeen Heat and Power heat network to help alleviate fuel poverty. Cults Skatepark had a new drainage channel and soakaway installed by ACC in early December. Early reports are that the flooding issues that have been plaguing this very popular facility have now been resolved. The skatepark will continue to be monitored to ensure the drainage continues to work effectively to allow the continued enjoyment of the facility. Your councillors are also aware of the poor condition of the footpath to the east of the site and have reiterated to officers that this should be fully reinstated to the preskatepark condition.
ACC have been maintaining street lighting on unadopted roads for some time now. Some of you have reported that the new council website, incorporating a map-based tool, does not allow any failed lights in unadopted roads to be reported. I am pleased to report that the ACC website has now been modified to permit failed street lighting in unadopted roads to be reported. Thank you for the pictures highlighting the less than satisfactory re-surfacing of Malcolm Road. Remedial works were completed at the end of last year in preparation for surface dressing of the road this year. We can also report that poor areas of road in the Meadows should be included in the 2019 roads resurfacing program. And finally, when you contact your Councillors with local issues it is our intention to reply to you quickly and then alert the relevant council officer and ensure a satisfactory follow-up. Happy New year from everyone in Simeon! As ever, since the last edition of MBC News, we have had a lot going on in Simeon. Since the visit from the Highland Alpacas were such a hit, and we have a resident originally from Shetland, it was only logical we should arrange a visit from the Therapy Ponies Scotland. Two Shetland ponies – Wilson and Mickey - came in to our home and snuggled up to our residents. It was a very special experience and thanks go to their handlers for making it such a lovely event.
We have enjoyed another very busy Christmas at Simeon with friends and families joining us for all sorts of occasions, including carol singing, decorating the tree and special festive meals.

We are the longest-established TCC Club in Aberdeen. We teach the empty hand sequences of circular, free ßowing, whole-body movements and partner exercises like Òpush handsÓ. Advanced students learn weapons forms. The ClubÕs Þve instructors between them have a total over 100 years of Tai Chi Chuan experience. News from Cults Academy PTA At Cults Academy, the PTA don’t usually fundraise for large, long-term projects and instead ensure the pupils benefit right away from the funds raised. Our Christmas Cracker Raffle really was a cracker raising over £2,000! We had the stunning hampers and other prizes on display at the outstanding production of Wizard of Oz and the festive Christmas Concert. Thanks to all the pupils and parents who helped sell refreshments, run the Chocolate Tombola and sell raffle tickets each night. St Devenick’s Playgroup News We have had a great start to the year so far and we hope you have too! We have welcomed lots of new children into the playgroup this term. When children come to our playgroup from 2 ½ years old it is often their first time separating from their parent and we don’t take that lightly. At St Devenick’s Playgroup we spend lots of time settling the children to make sure they are happy. Each child has a key person who makes sure the child feels safe and secure and will give them that extra attention. As the staff are all mums, we know very well that feeling of leaving your child somewhere for the first time. So the child’s key person also builds a relationship with the child’s parent and family and becomes a personal point of contact for them too. At playgroup we like to encourage creative and imaginative play. Young children will play and learn from lots of loose bits and bobs. It’s common for children, when given the latest fancy toy, to put it to one side and play with the box it came in instead! Why do they do this? Well, a box has limitless play opportunities - it can be a car, a boat, a den, a castle . . . and much more! Quite often the fancy new toy has only one or two play opportunities. If you have a young child, try putting away some of their toys one afternoon and providing a few loose items - a cardboard box, pans, wooden spoons, bed sheets, pinecones, leaves, milk bottle tops etc. and see what they do! This is an approach we are developing in the playgroup at the moment. We also like to give children different ways to make marks. These are important experiences for children as they are pre-cursors for writing. Making marks doesn’t have to be with pens and paper. It can be, for example, dipping toy cars in paint and making tyre tracks. One popular idea is using shaving foam. In the photo you can see how using shaving foam on the wall with rollers is a fun way to make marks. Try it at home with your own child!

As the New Year starts, it’s good to reflect on the year that has passed. 2018 was very busy in the library. We held several successful events, including story and craft sessions for Valentine’s Day, Easter and Christmas. We had a mischievous summer as we celebrated 80 years of the Beano with our Mischief Makers Summer Reading Challenge and we celebrated Book Week Scotland in November. 2019 is set to be just as busy for us. We have planned a Valentine’s Story and Craft session to be held on 12th February at 11am for children aged 4 to 8. It is a free event, but booking is required; just contact the library for more information or to book a place. Bookbug sessions continue to be popular with our pre-school service users and their parents. Sessions are scheduled for the 4th February, 4th March, 1st and 29th April at 2.15pm; booking is not required, but please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any queries about Bookbug. Granite Noir is returning to Aberdeen in 2019! Shampooing the Carpet More than a year ago, a member commented that the club house was looking a bit scruffy; we should shampoo the carpet and buy new chairs. Seemed like a good idea to my simple mind until another member said if she were doing up her own house, yes she would have the carpet shampooed but that would be the last thing to be done……pause for thought. A small committee was set up. This turned out not to be the customary delaying tactic but a positive step towards a much more expansive refurbishment. The result is that changes have been made apace. Outside contractors were brought in to replace the fitments in the two toilets and to replace the floor coverings in much of the club. The kitchen now has a new, and better, oven put in place. One of the most striking changes has been the removal of the wooden wall boards which contain the
list of Presidents and champions stretching back to the start of the club in 1887. This naturally caused some controversy; it is the history of the club. However, all members appreciate this, and these heavy boards are to be replaced with acrylic boards making the club house lighter, while still marking a proud history. Much of the work, such as painting and preparation, has been done by a small but hardworking group of members. Full marks to them and to their commitment to the club.
Outside bookings In the last issue of MBC News, it was made clear that Cults Bowling Club welcomed outside bookings. This is still the case, but you will now enjoy an even more attractive venue! The club charges a small rental and opens the bar if asked to do so.
The Bowling Club regard this primarily as a way of serving the local community though it is always an advantage to have the club house in use throughout the winter months. Scotland once more Betty Morrison our Scotland internationalist with the Blind Bowling Association has once again been selected to play for Scotland. Betty travelled through to Glasgow in September to play a game against another contender. Whoever won the game would be selected for Scotland. No pressure then. Betty did win and will represent her Country in mid-April. Congratulations once again!

ur December walk was a week earlier than normal and also a little shorter taking into account the short days of the month and also the proximity to Christmas. The walk started and finished at the Crathie car park. From there we took the short trip along the road towards Easter Balmoral before turning into the forest and following a track passing the Beatrice, Albert, Louise, Purchase/Leopold and Alice cairns on the Balmoral estate. We landed up at the castle itself before following a path alongside the river back to Easter Balmoral, taking the white footbridge over the Dee and back to the Crathie car park. Cults Lawn Tennis Club Now that Spring is upon us, Cults Lawn Tennis Club is getting ready for the new season starting on March 1st, 2019. We shall be officially opening the season with a social tournament on March 16th for all our members. For our junior members we plan to start Thursday Junior Night again in mid March. This is where our junior members get to take control of the courts to play fun games together. On April 28th we will be holding our annual Open Day where we would like to invite everyone, members and non-members, to come

New recruits at Cults Parish Church Cults Parish Church has recently employed two part-time Youth and Families Workers to support the development of this part of our church family. Abbie Cassidy and Clay Sangbarani started with us at the beginning of November and have been getting to know the congregation and starting to develop ideas for their work going forward. Both have experience of working with young people.
Cults Toddler Group News We’ve had a lovely and busy few months at Cults Toddler Group. It has been great to have had lots of new faces joining us and everyone has been enjoying the new toys that have been bought with recent donations and funds raised. The new trampoline in particular has been a big hit! Last year the group took part in a special event. The group sponsored a tree at the Church Christmas tree festival. It was a lovely cause to support and the children had fun making the decorations to decorate the tree. We then had fun visiting the church to see our tree and all the other ones too. We had a brilliant Christmas party with a very special guest from whom most of our little ones were happy to get a gift. There were lots of lovely party costumes and a very cute tiny reindeer. Everyone is now rejuvenated after the Christmas break and excited for spring time at toddler group and all the fun it brings.
Abbie is a second-year student at the University of Aberdeen where she is studying music. Her first ‘instrument’ is her voice and she is a member of the Scottish Opera Youth Chorus. She also plays bass guitar and is learning the double bass. Over the last few years Abbie has been a prolific volunteer youth worker in her home city of Dundee. Clay has been involved in youth work, in and out of the church, for several years. He is particularly keen on sport and music. Clay wants to share his faith with young people and help them grow in faith and achieve their potential.

Milltimber Playgroup News It’s been another busy and exciting term for us here at Milltimber Playgroup and we would like to wish everyone in the community a happy and healthy New Year. We’ve welcomed back a lot of returning families as well as greeting some new faces, and an exciting term lies ahead. Looking back, there have been lots of fun activities and the children have had the opportunity to enjoy the outdoor spaces surrounding the community hall and the large range of indoor activities and toys that the playgroup offers. October was full of excitement as Halloween gave the children the opportunity to don fancy dress and do lots of Halloween crafts. They even cooked pumpkin for their snack! We also hosted our annual ‘Spooktacular’ fireworks fundraising event at the playgroup which was very well attended and included games, activities and an amazing fireworks display which was enjoyed by everyone. The playgroup relies on contributions from parents and fundraising in the local community, so a huge thank you to everyone for your support in making this event a massive success. This term at playgroup the children have been busy playing and learning. We had a
visit from the Dental Nurse who spoke to the children about the importance of brushing their teeth. There was also lots of excitement in the run up to Christmas with festive games and crafts. We held a Christmas party for all the families to attend and we even had a surprise visit from Santa himself. All the children had the opportunity to visit Santa in his grotto and receive a gift. With the turning of the seasons from autumn to winter, the children who attend our Wednesday and Friday Forest Club sessions have been wrapping up warmly and making the most of the fresh air. They have enjoyed playing hide and seek in the forest, looking for beasties and using clay for modelling. The children have also been learning all about wildlife and have been making nests for birds. About Milltimber Playgroup and Forest School: We operate from the Milltimber Community Association Hall. In addition to our weekday morning sessions, we also offer an optional lunch club and a wraparound
service which transports children to Milltimber School Nursery’s afternoon session if required, providing seamless child care from 0915 to 1535, Monday to Friday. We also offer the wrap around transportation service from Milltimber school morning nursery and lunch club for our Friday afternoon Forest School session, which means child care from 0830 to 1440. There is currently space in some sessions. Walk via Cults Burn and Rocklands Road
Introduction A circular walk from Cults Hotel, up by the Cults Burn to Friarsfield, then along roads to Rocklands Road, essentially a track rather than a road with some woodland and open fields to the north and the Marcliffe Hotel on the south side, as far as the International School. Return via the Deeside Way. Footpath Details Grade: Easy. Terrain: Footpaths, roads and surfaced footpaths. Distance: 2.8 miles; 4.5 km. Time: Allow 1 hour. Route Details From Cults Hotel go up the narrow road leading past the public bar and the old Water Pumping Station (1865) to a small parking area. At the end take a path leading to the right up by Cults Burn towards Friarsfield Road. At the top turn right and walk along Friarsfield Road a few yards and take first right into Abbotshall Drive and then first left (Abbotshall Crescent). When you reach Abbotshall Road, cross and enter Rocklands Road. Initially tarmacked, it then turns into a rural lane. From this point on the area is part of the Pitfodels Conservation Area. The estate at Pitfodels was the seat of the Menzies’ family for over 300 years. This started with Gilbert Menzies in 1408, Provost of Aberdeen from 1423 until 1435. The estate extended over both sides of the Dee from the Bridge of Dee to the Burn of Cults and was sold upon the death of John Menzies, the last Laird of Pitfodels. The Pitfodels estate was feued into 20 plots, providing sites for large Victorian villas. The only plot remaining as originally split is the Marcliffe of Pitfodels. The first large plot on the right includes Wellwood house (1840) which in 1931 became a private psychiatric nursing home. In 1964 it was adapted as a rehabilitation centre for mentally handicapped patients. It is now privately owned. After crossing Bairds Brae there are initially open fields on the left and then a wooded area with the remains of a walled garden, probably belonging to Airy Hall. There are a number of footpaths around this area which can be explored as a diversion. On the right is Woodbank, Shell’s own hotel, conference and leisure facility and then the Marcliffe Hotel. On reaching the boundary between the Marcliffe and the International School take the tarmacked path along the boundary down to the North Deeside Road. Turn left, cross over and take the path down to the Deeside Way on the west side of Deeside Gardens. Turn right (west) and follow the Deeside Way to Cults Station. Leave the Deeside Way here, walk through the station yard and up along Station Road to the North Deeside Road and Cults Hotel.

The Ferryhill Railway Heritage Trust The Ferryhill Railway Heritage Trust (FRHT) was formed in 2007 to save what remained of the Ferryhill Railway Depot in Aberdeen. The Ferryhill site comprises two sections: the largest belonging to Network Rail and the other to Aberdeen Council. The council-owned site has a Blisted 1850’s engine shed and the Network Rail site has an ‘A’-Listed, 1906, Ransom and Rapier 70ft turntable, a coal ramp, a water tower and associated brick office buildings. Extensive restoration work has been carried out on the turntable and it is expected to be returned to service by March 2019. We expect to turn the steam engine, Tornado, in that month as well. Tornado is expected to visit Aberdeen five times in 2019. The 1850’s engine shed has had some remedial work done to it, to arrest further deterioration and extensive work requires to be carried out on the building’s roof and windows. We also need to install a new floor, incorporating railway lines. In addition to the above, we have a number of railway wagons, coaches, a steam rail-motor, a steam crane, a diesel crane, a steam locomotive, Wickham maintenance trolleys and a diesel locomotive: all waiting to be refurbished. FRHT has obtained planning permission for a path from the council site to connect us to Duthie Park, which will provide easy access to the railway site. This access to the public will require additional volunteers to show the public around the various aspects of the site and explain the history. We have also incorporated a ‘Men’s Shed’ where personal work can be carried out if desired. We require volunteers to help to assist with the restoration of the above work. Don’t worry if you don’t think you have the necessary skills. Unskilled volunteers can be ‘trained’ by us, if they wish. All ages, from 16 upwards (no limit!!), will be gladly welcomed by us. Aberdeen Group Forging Closer Links with Japan and North-east In October 2018, a delegation of Aberdeen businessmen and women, charity representatives and academics headed to Japan to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the restoration of the Meiji Emperor in 1868. Led by martial arts sensei Ronnie Watt OBE ORS and accompanied by Lord Charles Edward Bruce, the group, which is part of the Order of the Scottish Samurai (OSS), followed in the footsteps of 19th century travellers and pioneers such as Thomas Blake Glover and Lord Elgin. The delegation spent 10 days recreating a reverse pilgrimage to six cities during which it visited both the Japanese Parliament and British Embassy in Tokyo as well as the British Chamber of Commerce’s office. The Ambassador and two top British officials were presented with the Great Shogun award.

At the Japanese parliament, after visiting the Prime Minister’s Diplomatic Room, Ronnie met Mr Yamaguchi, the deputy head of the Japanese government. Mr Yamaguchi accepted the Great Shogun awards and agreed to present Prime Minister Shinzo Abe with the OSS Taisho Star on his return from France. Events were also held with: Mr Nodo Nakamura, Governor of Nagasaki; Mr Tomihisa Taue, Nagasaki’s mayor; and Mr Daisaki Ikeda, the figurehead of the Sola Gakki movement comprising more than 12 million Buddhists worldwide. Ronnie has been dedicated to his art of Karate for 53 years and has participated for 25 years in the OSS Samurai awards. While in Japan, he was presented with a Samurai helmet and suit at the shrine of Takida Shingen one of Japan’s Samurai Legends. Commenting on the trip, Ronnie said: “The extraordinary warmth, friendship and attention we received from everyone we met was both remarkable and humbling. “We were made so welcome, which undoubtedly helped build upon the significant historical and cultural links which exist between Japan and the North-east of Scotland. There are so many exciting opportunities that exist between Aberdeen and Japan, not least the chance to enhance Glover House in Aberdeen in order to attract more visitors from the East. “With Brexit upon us it is my hope that as a city we have the foresight, motivation and confidence to embrace the value of relationships forged in Japan and make things happen for the benefit of our region.” Plans are already in place for a delegation from Japan to visit Aberdeen in 2019.

The Mixing Bowl Aberdeen In November we were delighted to welcome some of the recently arrived Syrian community to provide an evening of food, singing and dancing. The event was so popular that we also held a second evening to accommodate everyone. It was wonderful to see how enthusiastic our local community was to meet, learn from and share food with our new neighbours. During the workshop Nadia and Areej taught us how to make tomatoes stuffed with rice, currants and herbs, as well as beef kofte on a fried Syrian bread base topped with spicy tomato sauce and yoghurt. Once the dishes were made, we all sat down to share the delicious banquet. The meal was accompanied by hummous and finished off with an almond milk pudding. Following the meal Nadia’s husband, Ahmed, sang for us which was a real treat and the evening came to a close with traditional dancing that we all joined in with. Our Syrian friends are keen to visit the Mixing Bowl again with new recipes so we look forward to welcoming them back in the future. The last Mixing Bowl event of the year always features a different festive recipe. This year our Christmas event was a Clootie Dumpling Workshop. We did a lot of research to prepare for the evening and interviewed people from Gardenstown in the North to Ballater in the West. We even spoke to Francis who makes a Clootie Dumpling for Prince Charles each time he visits Balmoral Castle. Shirley, our very own Cults Bard, wrote and recited a super poem about the dumpling! Christian Aid The CHRISTIAN AID CULTS TO CULTER COMMITTEE was able to send over £14,000 to Christian Aid for the work worldwide. This note is by way of a hug “thank-you” to everyone who contributed in any way to raising that sum of money. Cults Playgroup News Happy New Year from all at Cults Playgroup. We hope you all enjoyed the Christmas break. At playgroup, we welcomed several new children during October, November and December 2018. We look forward to more joining us in early 2019, and are now almost at capacity. Last term was full of special days and celebrations. An autumn walk to collect conkers led on to discussions about the season and lots of creative activities. Halloween saw all the children doing spooky art and craft, dressing up, and bobbing for apples. Guy Fawkes Night on November 5th led to some very impressive splatter pictures using bottled paints. We visited all the poppies in the church garden close to Remembrance Sunday and,
finally, marked St Andrew’s Day with Scottish music and the making of miniature saltires. Book Week Scotland, from 19th to 23rd November, allowed the children to bring in their favourite books from home. Children voted on developing some popular books and we ended up with: a tiger in the role play kitchen for ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’; a pile of sticks being used creatively for ‘Stick Man’; lots of fun with colour for ‘Elmer’; and a game of hunt the bear for ‘We’re Going On A Bear Hunt’. During December there was much enjoyment on the theme of Christmas. A wide variety of art and craft activities used large quantities of brightly coloured paints. The children enjoyed sponge-printing paper to make baubles out of card for a tree in the Christmas Tree Festival at Cults Parish Church. It was also fun to dress the tree, and finally visit the church when all the trees had been decorated. The end of term finished with a party and Sing-Along concert for parents, carers and friends. In addition to all of these activities, we have continued to use the garden despite the colder weather. Our spring bulbs have been planted and we watch their growth with anticipation. The mud pit has lived up to its name and is
always popular, especially when there is a puddle in it! The trikes, big balls, trampoline and outdoor music line continue to be popular. The playgroup committee members continue to be busy. They look forward to hosting the ever-popular Burns Night Supper on 26rd January 2019. So, dig out your kilt and dancing shoes in preparation for an exciting night! Cults Playgroup runs each morning of the week in the North Hall, Quarry Road, from 9am until 12.10pm. Peterculter Medical Practice The practice is fully engaged with a new development known as the Aberdeen Links Programme. This is a Scottish Government funded programme which aims to help the primary care team address factors which can affect a patient’s health or wellbeing, helping us achieve positive solutions in individual cases by addressing issues that are not strictly ‘medical’ ones. For example, GPs will often see patients with problems where physical and/or mental health is being significantly affected by factors such as social isolation, alcohol abuse, financial difficulties, stress or housing issues (to name just a few) and it is with these issues that the Links Programme can help. Our Link Practitioner at Peterculter Medical Practice is Lisa Williams, she is based within the practice and patients can be easily referred to her (at present this is via the GP). She will be able to assess the details of the problem and look for possible solutions for an individual patient, for example by directing them to local community resources or other sources of help as appropriate. We have been using her services fully, and we are already receiving excellent feedback about her input.

The potholes in the car park were repaired in late autumn 2018, so we hope these withstand whatever frosts and ice this winter throws at us. We had some water leakage from the roof into one corner of the main waiting room following heavy rains in December; this has been fixed. We welcome Dr Gregor McIntosh to our premises; he will be running his private aviation medicals business from rooms in our health centre. Heart Health and Exercise Why does exercise improve our heart health and deliver overall health benefits to us? To understand the link, it’s necessary to look at how the heart works. The heart has its own electrical activity to enable its rhythmic beat. This activity starts at the heart’s pacemaker; at the sinoatrial node. The rate of this pacemaker is called sinus rhythm. In a healthy individual the heart beats between 60-80 beats per minute. It takes 0.8 seconds for a heart to complete a full beat followed by a delay of aprox 0.1 of a second before the heart beats again. During the relaxation phase, the heart muscle itself is profuse with blood. The contraction phase is called systole, which takes approximately 0.3 seconds. The relaxation phase is called diastole, which lasts 0.5 seconds, taking it to 0.8 seconds for contraction and relaxation, that is a full beat. When the heart rate is elevated, such as during exercise, or when stressed, or you feel nervous, the diastole phase shortens, and so the high pressure in this system is prolonged. Conversely, when the heart rate is near resting heart rate, the diastole phase, the lower pressure phase, lasts longer. Exercise is a therapy to enable the heart to be stronger, more efficient at rest and cause the diastole phase to lengthen. During exercise the heart rate increases in direct relation to exercise intensity. But there comes a point when the heart rate levels off. Maximum heart rate is the highest rate that is achieved in an all-out-effort exercise session. But to be safe and effective during exercise we work within 80%of your maximum heart rate in any fitness class/session. Maximum heart rate (MHR) can be calculated by subtracting your age from 220. Then calculating 80% of your MHR is your training zone for health benefits. For example, 220- 55(yrs)= 165 beats per minute and 80% of 165 is 135. The training heart rate zone for a 55 year-old would be a maximum heart rate of 135 to achieve health benefits and stay safely exercising. During the first block of classes in 2019, our Pilates, Yoga, Strength & Balance and Aerobic classes will focus on exercise to strengthen or calm the heart and give your heart more time at rest. First Christmas Lights Switch On The first Christmas Lights Switch On for Cults, Bieldside and Milltimber on Saturday 17 November 2018 was a great success. Over 150 people gathered at the Hub Cafe in Cults Kirk Centre, where guests enjoyed stalls and refreshments, and children’s games were organised by the Rotary Club. Mince pies, tea and coffee were enjoyed, as was the complimentary mulled wine donated by CBM Community Council. Stalls featured local businesses, such as Sonya Angus showcasing the goodies from her gift shop. Donations for the Raffle/ Tambola were from: Rowlands Pharmacy, Domino’s Pizza, Tesco, Will’s Toy Shop, Park shop, TUV, Haigs, ATOB Removals, Esker Gin, Sonya Angus Gifts, Den in the Glen and the Mixing Bowl. There was also an online competition donated by Esker Gin, with one happy lady collecting her Esker Gin on the day. Entertainment was provided by Chorus of Sweet Adelines, and the main man himself, Santa arrived in style in a TukTuk decorated in Christmas lights. Childline also attended and Pantosaurus even delayed his journey back to Glasgow so that he could come and say hello. The face-painting girls didn’t stop from the minute the event started; thank you to Nyha and Rebecca and their mums. Special thanks to our elected representatives, MSP Maureen Watt and Councillors Marie Bolton and Mohammed Tauqeer Malik who took time out of their busy schedule to help on the day. Also, huge thanks to the Hub and everyone who volunteered on the day, without whom the event wouldn’t have happened. The Christmas Lights project was initiated in 2016 by community councillor Lindsay Davidson with the aim of introducing new festive lighting into our community. Lindsay has succeeded in securing sponsorship from local businesses, including Cala Homes, Bancon Homes, Esker Gin, Sonya Angus gift shop, Marcliffe Hotel, activpayroll, Scott Gilmour Optometrists, Ross Thomson MP, Councillor M. Tauqeer Malik, Kippie Lodge, Galbraith Property Consultancy and the Aberdeen Clinic, to deck out 33 lamp-posts along North Deeside Road with festive lights. The Golden Games is a festival of FREE sport and activity for older adults held in Aberdeen every June. Photo by Kia Hamilton
The Games started in 2011 with five activities and 80 participants and in 2018 it had grown so much there were 89 activities held over 10 days with 425 participants! Some of the activities on offer during the 2018 games included pickleball, tennis, a number of health walks, introduction to the gym, shooting and there was even a dance flashmob! Regardless of your age or fitness level, there is something for you at the Games. Even our Care Homes get involved in the Care Home Pentathlon. Meet Sylvia, she is one of the Golden Games Ambassadors. Sylvia Wood (70) was medically retired at 65 years and following recovery from an operation, she heard about a health walk running as part of the Golden Games and decided to go. She very much enjoyed the walk and heard that regular health walks were to start in the Bridge of Don area where she lives, so she decided to go to these. The following year, Sylvia decided to try a few more activities during the Golden Games. The ones she chose were held at the Sports Village and she enjoyed these so much she decided to take out an “Evergreens” membership which is a membership for sports and activities held in the Sports Village for older adults. She attended the Evergreens exercise class and the Zumba class, both of which were busy classes (of up to 100!) and had a range of older people with all different abilities. One thing leads to another and Sylvia now also has a membership with Sport Aberdeen which allows her to join in the activities she enjoys in any of the City’s Sport Aberdeen venues. Sylvia’s week comprises of various aqua classes across the city, a weekly health walk and a steady steps class at Westburn Outdoor Centre. The Golden Games was the catalyst for this change in Sylvia’s lifestyle and Sylvia is a real inspiration to many others. Sylvia suffers from lymphedema following treatment for cancer in 2006 and finds the exercise she does helps her to retain her strength, flexibility and gives her energy. Importantly though, Sylvia talks about the social benefits she gets from her active lifestyle. The groups she attends gives her contact with people she wouldn’t otherwise have. They have social outings, have built friendships and are very supportive of each other. Sylvia became a Golden Games Ambassador and along with others, helps to encourage people to give the Games a try. Sylvia and the other Ambassadors are around during the games to greet people and ensure people feel welcome. Sylvia won the “Pearl Mitchell Trophy” at the 2017 Golden Games. This is an award given to a person during the games who is seen to be an inspiration to others and is voted for by the participants of the games. So not only has Sylvia been brave enough to take steps to battle her way back to health, she also inspires others to do the same.

Forging new friendships whilst keeping ourselves fit in a pastime we all enjoy.Our open “5 a side” sessions take place during the school term on Thursday nights from 7.30-9.00pm.

pring bulbs, yellow crocuses and blue muscari, have been planted: at the junction of Cairn Road and the North Deeside Road, Bieldside; in Darroch Park, in the grass next to the path leading from the car park; in Dunmail Road up to Cults Library; and in the grass outside the Bruce Cottages in South Avenue, Cults. Crocuses are some of the first bulbs to flower in the spring and, whilst at the time of writing winter has not gripped us firmly, these smaller bulbs will be appreciated when they show their colours.

Cults Canoe Club We had a lovely Christmas paddle on Sunday 16th December from Invercannie to Crathes in beautiful sunshine and good water levels. Several kayakers and a canoe tandem pair participated with boats and paddlers suitably decorated for the season. At the end of the paddle we enjoyed a great Christmas meal at the Milton of Crathes. Thanks to all participants for the fun and excellent company! There will be trips planned throughout the year, usually on Sundays following a meeting at the Bieldside Inn. Please come along at 7pm on the Tuesday and join us for a drink and chat, and the Sunday following will have an activity arranged to suit your needs and experience. Meetings will take place on the first Tuesday of each month and paddles will usually be on the following Sunday. We’d be delighted to welcome new members, and have instructors qualified to teach inland kayaking or Canadian canoeing. Rotary Club of Aberdeen Deeside Update January 2019
International Students Evening, 21 November 2018 RCAD again hosted their annual meeting of about a dozen overseas students from RGU Garthdee together with members of the Aberdeen Rotaract Club. The students were asked to give their initial thoughts on being in Aberdeen and comparisons with their home countries.
Primary Schools Public Speaking Competition, 2 October 2018 Rotary Club of Aberdeen Deeside (RCAD) hosted this competition at Milltimber Primary School. Eighteen primary 7 pupils from five local primary schools competed for the coveted Rotary trophy. The choice of topics were:

Tabletop Whisky Trail & Whisky Tasting Evening, 19 October 2018 A fun evening was had at the Aberdeen Grammar Former Pupils’ Club by teams of four, solving cryptic clues and using their navigational skills to find 11 distilleries around Strathspey. Nosing and tasting of 5 quality malts and some surprise nips were appreciated by the whisky lovers who attended. There were prizes for the winning team and best nose, and also a raffle for a quality single malt. The evening resulted in a total profit for Rotary of over £400 of which £250 went to Mary’s Meals.

Access and the Right to Roam: Local Roaming The Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 ensures everyone has statutory access rights to most of Scotland’s outdoors, if these rights are exercised responsibly, with respect for people’s privacy, safety and livelihoods, and for Scotland’s environment. Equally, land managers have to manage their land and water responsibly in relation to access rights. The Scottish Outdoor Access Code provides detailed guidance on these responsibilities. Private Roads Under Land Reform Scotland Act 2003, the public are entitled under access rights to walk up a private road. However, these rights stop at the entrance to properties. Therefore, a person using the road for walking is within their access rights as long as they are acting responsibly.
Our 2019 season starts on March 23rd, and this year there will be a big focus on family golf with lots of family fun days planned and some new items for summer evenings. Woodland The ACC Access Officer was requested to confirm that the public has a right of access to the Binghill woods and can use the entrance from Contlaw Road. The response was ‘Yes, the public have a right of access under Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003, as long as it is done so responsibly.’ Horses on Paths In Scotland a core path is technically allowed to be used by all nonmotorised users, so horse riding is included within that. In this instance, there is nothing to prevent a horse rider using a path so long as they are using the path responsibly. CBM Footpath Group Last year the Community Council footpath group published a leaflet ‘Walks Around Cults’ which includes a map and details of six walks. It has also published six other walks in the CBM area in MBC News. These twelve walks have now been posted on-line at the Community Council website http://cbmcommunity.org.uk/ There is an overall map and all walks are listed, with a brief outline. The leaflet can be downloaded and each walk can be viewed separately on the website or downloaded. We are very lucky to have active Rainbow, Brownie and Guide Units in the Milltimber and Cults area. This is due to the hard work and dedication of all the Leaders. Previously as an Organisation we could give you a list of all the Units in the area, the name and contact details of the Leaders and as an interested parent you could contact the Leaders directly, but now due to our Nationwide “Safe from Harm” Policy we can no longer publish this information. We now have a Website that you can visit and register an interest for the age group you want a place in for your daughter. It is a simple procedure and once you have registered, a Guider should be in touch within 3 weeks to say if there are places available or if your daughter will be placed on the waiting list. You will be asked to put in your Postcode, the type of Unit you are interested in and if there are more than 1 suitable Unit you will be asked to put your 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice.
