Spotlight on Electrolysis by Jenny Davidson Unwanted facial and body hair is a common problem affecting as many as 80% of ladies in varying degrees. Most areas can be permanently cleared of unwanted hairs with electrolysis including hair on the upper/lower lip, chin, cheeks, neck, chest, abdomen, underarms, bikini line and the eyebrows. Majority of clients will be happy, well balanced people with hair growth concerns that are purely ‘cosmetic’; others may be self-conscious or even quite distressed when they take their first tentative steps through the door. I may frequently encounter the perceived problem of hirsutism (male pattern hair growth on females) I can offer helpful and objective advice plus information to the client. In some cases where I feel there may be some abnormal systemic condition I will refer the client to their GP who may make a referral to a specialist, but in the vast majority of cases there is no underlying medical pathology and treatment at my centre is the usual outcome. The advice and treatment offered should be sufficient to resolve any normal problem, and the result is usually a restored sense of confidence and wellbeing in the client. Causes of hair growth Mechanical Stimulation Plucking, (including waxing, threading, sugaring), abrasion Normal Systemic Puberty, pregnancy, menopause, ie times of normal hormonal changes in the body. Abnormal systemic Hormone influencing medication ie steroids, contraceptive pill and hormone replacement therapy (HRT), fertility drugs.

Disease: eg endocrine disorders affecting hormonal secretions from the glands of the body. Operations: eg hysterectomy, removal of ovaries. Stress (may only stimulate hair growth when severe and subsequently triggers hormonal imbalance eg in anorexia. Electrolysis is the only proven method of permanent hair removal of unwanted hair having been around since 1875. With the use of the Apilus computerised system I can offer differing treatment methods to best suit your hair growth and skin type. Unlike laser or IPL, electrolysis is ideal for sensitive skins, dark, light and grey hairs and any colour of skin as it is not affected by pigment in the hair or skin! Electrolysis targets only the unwanted, individual hair and so the skin remains unaffected. It is a progressive treatment resulting in permanent removal of the hair and not just hair reduction! What happens? A very fine needle (equal diameter to the hair to be treated) is inserted down the side of the follicle and a mild current is applied. This causes localised destruction at the root of the hair allowing the hair to be lifted out of the follicle. A mild tingling sensation is felt but soon passes with the application of a soothing gel! Let’s not forget MEN... Electrolysis works well on facial hair above the beard line, around the ears and around the nose. Kumiko has moved to 2-4 Bath Street, Aberdeen AB11 6HY come and visit soon.

Janus-Faced Drivers

There is no doubt our personality changes when we get behind the wheel. I am sorry to say that we can, as drivers, be less than caring to completely selfish. This piece was inspired by three such examples I witnessed on a short stretch of A-road.

Firstly, a speed restriction was in place to protect maintenance workers cone laying. The job is dangerous enough without drivers wilfully ignoring the limit with workers inches away from them.

A little later, the overhead displays warned me of an accident and to move to the right, further backed up by both orange and blue lights on the attending vehicles. This warning was ignored by the van driver who undertook all of us in the left lane and sped past the scene. Finally, I came to a junction slip road onto the carriageway. The Highway Code states that if traffic is too dense then you must wait in the slip road until an opportunity arises to safely join the road. This was ignored by the driver who barged in, wasn’t content to sit behind a lorry, and swung into the right-hand lane causing all of us to brake hard. All those concerned wanted to continue their journey at the expense of others. Out of their cars, those drivers are likely polite, caring family people who would never jump a queue – they are Janus-faced drivers.

The roads are crammed enough as it is, but using them with courtesy will improve the experience for all. By Iain Betson

Stand Aside, Standby. You aren’t needed. Comedian Michael McIntyre made fun of us all by pointing out that we often shut down appliances before going on holiday for safety reasons. Except the fridge because “we trust the fridge”.

He has a point on the safety aspect, but we should also be considering the environmental one, and not just when we are on holiday. Leaving your devices on standby means you are spending good money warming the planet. Whilst switching a fridge off doesn’t make sense, here are a few things that do:

According to MoneySuperMarket, the biggest standby power users are TVs, TV boxes (e.g. Sky/Virgin) and multiroom speakers. Chances are you only actually use them evening and weekends so waiting 60 seconds for them to restart isn’t much of a sacrifice.

When you unplug your mobile phone after charging it, the charger is still using tiny amounts. When you multiply that by the number of people in the house, it’s not so tiny. So switch it off at the wall when you aren’t using it.

Your router is something you want to have available pretty much all the time. But if you are going on two weeks holiday, a little holiday of its own won’t hurt. It’s quicker to put your PC on standby than to shut it down, but we are only saving seconds here. And we all know that sometimes your PC wakes up, all by itself. There’s a device not to be trusted!

The Devastating Effects of Bullying I was shocked and upset by the news about Caroline Flack and the links to bullying. For both children and adults, bullying can be devastating. Anxiety, depression, loneliness, and poor self-esteem can occur and as recent events have shown, suicide can follow. Physical bullying is the most obvious type but psychological bullying can also be highly damaging. Gossiping about celebs or people you know may seem harmless but gossip and speculation can have devastating effects.

Trolling is a form of emotional bullying. Celebs such as Jesy Nelson have spoken of the impact, which led her to attempt suicide. The tragedy of Caroline Flack’s death has further highlighted the harmful effects of gossiping and trolling. You might have speculated about people or even posted online comments but always thinking about the impact of our words and actions is so important. And if you’re the victim of any form of bullying, please get help and support. In my Aberdeen clinic, I see clients struggling with the psychological effects of different forms of bullying. I’ve helped both adults and children to rebuild their lives after being the victim of bullies — including adults who have

lived with the effects of bullying for years.

Spring Clean Your Contracts

It’s spring cleaning time, and that means spring cleaning your subscriptions and contracts – which can save you a lot of money. If your mobile phone contract period is up you can usually save cash by keeping your phone and switching to a cheaper SIM-only contract – don’t worry, you can keep your number – and you’ll often find that broadband and/or TV deals you signed up for in the past aren’t such great value any more. It’s worth checking to see what else you’re entitled to that you might not be using. For example, if you pay for Amazon Prime delivery you also get access to its Prime Video and music offerings; many phone contracts bundle free subscriptions for things like Sky Sports or Spotify; and some bank accounts include free mobile phone insurance and other goodies.

Peter Waller re-visits Aberdeen when tramways were the way of getting around the city Lost Tramways of Scotland: Aberdeen, Size 150 x 200mm, 64pp, £8.99, ISBN 9781912654420 The desire for a safe and sustainable public transport system in Aberdeen is never far from the news. As the environmental impact of our cities remains a prominent issue, so too do the ever-increasing costs of bus travel, the limitations of rail and the congested state of the city’s roads. Enter then a new series of books from author Peter Waller and publisher Graffeg which draws attention to a transport system familiar to past generations and which may yet form part of future plans – the tram. The new Lost Tramways of Scotland series documents how tram systems in towns and cities across the country developed, how they served and affected their communities, and what possibilities there may be for us to reimagine them today. Lost Tramways of Scotland: Aberdeen also provides an intimate glimpse into the social history of life as it was lived from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries, a time of immense growth and change when travel by tram was commonplace. Aberdeen played host to two electric tramways: the corporation’s services within the city and the short- lived service operated by the Aberdeen Suburban Tramways Co. Acquiring modern trams in the late 1940s, Aberdeen was perceived as one of the safest of British tramways in

the post-war years, but even here the diesel bus was to take-over, with the final tram running on 3 May 1958.

and affordable resource for the transport enthusiast as well as an accessible guide for the general reader, current residents and visitors past and present.

Author Peter Waller adds: ‘Although elsewhere in Britain the end of World War II allowed for plans for tramways conversion by the conflict to be revived, in Aberdeen the tram seemed to have a secure future... These were rumours- sadly incorrect’. A wealth of original photographs from the collection of the Online Transport Archive, many appearing in print for the first time, tell the story of Aberdeen’s bustling city centre, shifting trends and recognisable streets which have been maintained or transformed through the decades. The rigorous detail of this title, including coverage of tram models and manufacturers, daily operation and the history of the network, makes it a portable

Windswept Gardening Creating a garden in a windswept spot is possible by making it easier for plants to survive, but there are also plants that are tougher than you might think. So what should you do, and what should you grow? If possible, choose miniature or dwarf varieties of plants – as they are closer to the ground, they enjoy some protection from the prevailing winds and so have the chance to put on a decent show. Creating a windbreak – such as hedge – gives a great improvement. Native hedging plants including hawthorn, blackthorn, guelder rose, wild rose and some field maple are available for planting bare root at a very reasonable price. It will take a few years for a small, new hedge to get established, so in the meantime erect a man-made barrier such as some hurdles. If you don’t want a hedge, erect something like a fence, which allows some wind through. Avoid solid windbreaks like walls, as they can cause turbulence and worsen the wind and cold on the garden side of the barrier. Make the most of those areas of your garden that are less exposed, and don’t ‘waste’ those prized positions on tougher plants. Many bulbs are hardy or low to the ground, so consider crocus, chinodoxa, anemone, Iris reticulata, cyclamen (hardy forms only) or dwarf narcissus such as Tete-a-Tete and Peeping Tom. A number of rock plants do well in exposed gardens. Try Campanula portenschlagiana (a creeping form of the pretty bellflower), Sempervivum (the rosette-forming house leeks), low-growing hebes, Erigeron daisies, Helianthemum and Veronica spicata. Some annual flowers with delicate colourful blooms are tougher than they look, and many of these are easy and inexpensive to grow from seed. Consider wallflowers, petunias, evening primrose, Echium, flax, calendulas, sweet William, clarkia, Californian poppies, Lavatera trimestris and candy tuft.

Sow or plant perennials for colour that will return year after year. There are often some bargains to be had at this time of year when small pots of perennials are available from most garden centres for only a few pounds each. The stately hardier form of Yucca filiamentosa (related to the popular houseplant) adds structure and impact; also consider the New Zealand flax (Phormium), Sedum spectabile (the ice plants), Phlomis, Lavatera maritima, Kniphofia caulescens (a form of red-hot poker), Centranthus ruber, Japanese anemones, Eryngium, Agapanthus and Euphorbia characias. For a little more height and longer-term structure then a few shrubs are a welcome addition to a windy or exposed garden. Many of the delicate flowered Cistus do well: Fuchsia magellanica, Euonymus fortunei, Escallonia, Elaeagnus and the dwarf species of Cotoneaster such as Cotoneaster horizontalis should fit the bill. Self Help for Sore Throats We all know that dreaded feeling: you wake up with such a painful throat that it feels like you are swallowing sandpaper. You feel lousy, but what should you do now? Do you need to see a doctor? Do you need to stay off work? Should you take an antibiotic? What causes a sore throat? In adults and in children aged under 5, around 95% of sore throats are caused by viruses.

Most commonly, these are rhinoviruses (RHV), or adenovirus infections. The remainder are caused by viruses such as the Epstein-Barr virus, influenza and herpes viruses. Less commonly, a sore throat may be due to a bacterial infection – specifically, streptococcus A. Although rare, if this bacterium is untreated, complications can develop such as rheumatic fever (a heart condition) and glomerulonephritis (kidney disease).

14

There are also non-infectious causes of a sore throat; smoking, the effects of passive smoking, snoring, shouting, having an intubation during an anaesthetic and use of some medicines, such as steroid inhalers. Two types of sore throat Have a look in the mirror. - Pharyngitis - Your throat will be generally red and inflamed. - Tonsillitis - Your tonsils will be swollen and red, covered with a tonsillar fluid, and may contain spots of pus. The tonsils are two pads of lymphoid tissue, like two pillars, one on either side, at the back of your throat. They filter out potentially harmful agents as you breathe in and out. You can survive without your tonsils, but most experts agree it’s best not to remove them, unless absolutely necessary.

Self–care for your sore throat Both pharyngitis and tonsillitis are likely to resolve within 3-4 days but there is plenty you can do to ease your symptoms. 1. You do not necessarily need to see a doctor – rest is often enough. You can take up to seven days off work without a doctor’s sick note. If you feel you will not be productive at work and that you will also infect other work colleagues, it may be best to stay away, or work from home. 2. Drink plenty of fluids. 3. There is usually no need for antibiotics – this is most likely viral and antibiotics will not kill off a virus. 4. Take paracetamol regularly to help reduce your temperature. Take ibuprofen (provided you haven’t been advised not to) as this will help reduce the pain. You can take both at the same time. The doses ae clearly written on the package inserts.

Check out our website : www.gazettemagazines.com

5. Other treatments such as throat sprays, lozenges and antiseptic mouthwashes may be helpful. Discuss with your pharmacist. However, some may contain paracetamol so take care not to overdose. 6. Try gargling with saltwater. 7. Try not to smoke – this will make your symptoms worse. When to see a doctor See the doctor if your symptoms last more than 4 days, are worsening, if you can’t eat or drink, or if you have large, pus-covered tonsils. The doctor may decide to do a throat swab and send this for testing. They may also do some blood tests to check

your blood count and test for glandular fever. The recommended antibiotic is phenoxymethylpenicillin. If you are allergic to penicillin, an alternative is clarithromycin. When do you need an antibiotic? In both pharyngitis and tonsillitis, your throat will hurt, and you may have symptoms such as tiredness, fever and difficulty swallowing. A sore throat may also be a symptom of a cold, or an attack of influenza. General symptoms like these will not respond to an antibiotic. People with tonsillitis tend to be more unwell, with a high fever (temperature of over 38°C), and general malaise. Other symptoms may include

a cough, a hoarse voice, sore glands in the neck and bad breath. Y Should you have your tonsils removed? The NHS is concerned that too many children are having unnecessary tonsillectomies. This refusal to operate can be very frustrating for parents whose children are repeatedly ill. However, tonsillectomy carries risks, children do tend to ‘grow out of it’ and there is some evidence that children who have their tonsils out may have an increased risk of asthma and other respiratory problems in later life. aving graduated from Scott Sutherland School of Architecture (RGU) in 2008 with Honours in Interior Architecture and Masters in Architecture, Craig started his career working for a small but reputable architecture practice in Aboyne. This practice was design lead, focusing on domestic projects from small unique structures to highend extensions and new-build houses, ranging in value up to £1m. It was here where Craig learnt the skills for using many local materials, both traditional and contemporary, leading to a team effort which won a Scottish Saltire Architecture Award for the conversion of a traditional mill, into a family home. Craig also pioneered the design of a low energy home, using insulation and air-tightness techniques which are now standard practice in current home construction.

Studio Exterior - Warm welcoming light design for the entrance deck Studio Interior - Bright and airy space created in original Victorian cottage

In 2014 Craig was asked to join the team in a practice which specialised in commercial and retail and domestic projects in the west end of Aberdeen. Working at both these practices gave Craig the skills and experiences in a variety of projects, ranging in size and complexity.

Studio Kitchen - Clean, fresh and modern kitchen design So, in late 2018 Craig decided to build his own studio and set up his architecture practice 57North Architecture. Having first built the studio as a design showcase, 57North Architecture has gone on to work with many clients in the West end, as well as along the Deeside corridor. Ranging from highly welldesigned domestic extensions, to retail venues such as the Cowshed Ice-Cream Parlour and Sea, Salt & Sole restaurants. 57North Architecture is able to offer a full architect service from concept to completion of your project and can guide you through the process step-by-step. Why the name 57North? It’s the latitude of Aberdeen, where we’re based and enjoy working. Out with architecture, Craig enjoys cycling, photography and travel as well as leading a local Scout group Mannofield Explorers, passing on skills and experiences to young people age 14-18 in the local community.

be quite porous, and is likely to require sealing before and during installation, and careful cleaning afterwards. Marble tends to be slippery, while limestone and sandstone have a more matt surface, and granite and slate can be given a non-slip finish. Use an expert installer.

Choose Your Ideal Bathroom Flooring There’s an endless choice of bathroom floorings that are affordable, practical and wonderfully attractive. Bathroom floorcoverings must, first and foremost, be supremely practical: non-slip and resistant to water and humidity, easy to clean and comfortable underfoot. We outline some possibilities. Vinyl and luxury vinyl tiles Quick and easy to lay, vinyl is warm underfoot, durable, stainresistant, water-resistant and easy to mop, and many types work with underfloor heating. From affordable sheet vinyls to luxury vinyl tiles (LVTs) the range of patterns is impressive, some of which replicate the appearance of natural materials such as wood, stone or ceramic tiles. Ceramic and porcelain tiles A go-to choice, tiles are infinitely

variable – in size, shape, pattern and price – but are cold and hard underfoot, and hence are often combined with underfloor heating. Without a matt or textured surface, they can be slippery when wet. Porcelain tiles can imitate the look of wood or stone incredibly well, without some of the drawbacks of those materials. Floor tiles are thicker and more expensive than wall tiles so make sure you get the right ones. Stone Stone tends to be cold and hard underfoot. It’s also really heavy, so consider consulting an expert to ensure your floor joists can take its weight. That said, stone is tough, durable and possesses an incomparable natural beauty, with a wide variety of finishes and patterns. Natural stone can

Engineered wood Solid wood floorboards tend to shrink, swell and/or warp with wetness and humidity so use engineered wood, made from real wood layered at right angles and glued, making it extra strong and stable. It is usually suitable over underfloor heating. Choose a waterresistant finish such as oil or lacquer and ventilate the room well to minimise humidity, place mats in front of the bath and basin, and mop up spills immediately. Cork Warm, quiet and resilient to water, cork tiles are easy to fit, durable and extremely sustainable. Cork is available in a range of fashionable shades and comes pre-finished with a durable wear layer. As with LVTs and rubber, cork tiles must be butted up very close to avoid water seeping between them. Rubber Warm and shock-absorbent, durable, stain-resistant and incredibly waterproof, rubber is both child-friendly and ultra-stylish, coming in an array of colours. Available in tile or sheet form, it is generally low maintenance, but smooth surfaces can be very slippery, so the best choice for a bathroom is a textured design, which may need occasional careful cleaning.

The Book Nook

From thrillers to gardening, there’s something to suit most readers this month… Alice – Christina Henry If you enjoy twisted fairy tales, this book (and its sequel, Red Queen) needs to be on your reading list. The story begins with Alice, who’s been locked up in an asylum for a decade after encountering the Rabbit. She escapes with her neighbouring cellmate and they set off on a journey that sees them encountering various characters from the beloved children’s tale. This is definitely not a story for children however; it’s horrifying, gruesome and as dark as they come. On the Up – Alice O’ Keeffe Sylvia dreams of a better life, away from her council flat. A home with wisteria around the door, a garden and no noisy neighbours. Meanwhile, her financial situation and the challenges of parenthood are putting a strain on her relationship with her partner, Obe. While Sylvia is desperate to leave her estate behind, when it’s threatened she finds herself ready to defend it. A warm humorous book about family, community and modern life.

20

The Mercies – Kiran Millwood Hargrave The tiny Norwegian community of Vardø is devastated when most of its men are killed at sea in one night. The women have to come together to survive. But this is the seventeenth century, and independent women are viewed with suspicion and distaste, particularly by new commissioner Absalom Cornet. Based on real events, The Mercies is a gripping, thoughtprovoking read.

Peaky Blinders: The Real Story of Birmingham’s most notorious gangs – Carl Chinn If you love the TV series, you might enjoy reading about some of the real peaky blinders who lived, fought and evaded the law in Birmingham a century ago. Amongst them was the author’s own great-grandfather. Unlike the show, the book doesn’t glamourise the men or the deeds. As Chinn states, the peaky blinders were often “unsavoury, unglamorous and unworthy of respect”. Instead, the book provides a wellresearched, fascinating insight into historical gang violence.

How to Plant a Garden – Matt James Itching to get back out in your garden now spring is here? Or perhaps you’re somewhat reluctantly determined to tackle the weeds? Either way, this book might help to inspire you. There’s advice on choosing the right plants for different situations and plenty of guidance on soil conditions, shady areas, plant combinations and more. It’s not a new release, so you might even be able to order a copy from your local library. Three Hours – Rosamund Lupton Masked gunmen attack a school in Somerset. They shoot the headmaster but make no demands. Who’s behind the attack; who’s safe; who’s the target? A heart-racingly tense thriller with characters you’ll be desperate to protect. Three Hours will keep you on the edge of your seat and reading ‘just one more page’ long into the night.

Twice Cooked Cheese Souffles The beauty of these individual souff les is that you don’t have to worry about them collapsing before they get to the table. You can prepare and cook them in advance (see Tip), then simply turn then out and reheat when required.

Ready in: 1 hour | Makes 4 25g butter, plus extra for greasing

2 tbsp panko breadcrumbs 1 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese 25g plain flour

½ tsp mustard powder 200ml milk

75g mature Cheddar cheese, finely grated 2 medium egg yolks

Salt and freshly ground black pepper 3 medium egg whites 1 tsp olive oil

TIP

Fresh herbs and mixed salad, to serve

22

Preheat the oven to 190C/170 fan/gas mark 5. Use the extra butter to thoroughly grease four 200ml ramekin dishes. Line the base of each dish with a circle of baking paper. Mix together the breadcrumbs and Parmesan cheese and use to coat the inside of the dishes.

Melt the butter in a small pan, stir in the flour and mustard powder and cook for 1 minute. Remove from the heat and gradually stir in the milk. Cook, stirring, over a moderate heat for 2-3 minutes until the mixture forms a thick sauce. Stir in the Cheddar cheese.

Allow the mixture to cool for a few minutes then beat in the egg yolks and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Whisk the egg whites in clean grease-free bowl until stiff. Stir 1 tbsp of the whites into the mixture to loosen it slightly then gently fold in the rest of the whites. Divide the mixture between the ramekins. Place in a roasting tin, half fill with boiling water and bake for 15-20 minutes until risen and golden.

Cool for 10 minutes then turn the souffles out onto a greased baking sheet and remove the lining paper (see Tip). Brush the tops with olive oil and return to the oven for 6-7 minutes until golden brown. Serve garnished with fresh herbs and with a mixed salad, if liked.

After turning out the souffles onto the baking sheet they can be left to cool then covered and chilled for up to 12 hours. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until piping hot.
