Well we really can’t complain - can we? Even if that is it for the summer this year it has been glorious. A lot of happy, smiley, sun kissed people going about. The house project, which is a shambles, is moving along nicely. Considering it has only just been five weeks since we got the keys we are already rewired, plastered, bathroom and kitchen are now progressing well too. Bedrooms almost there - just one final push! On hindsight - living through it all - is not recommended! This magazine is just jam packed full of goodies for you to read. Elaine at Junction is celebrating 10 years in business and it has been a pleasure to be part of the marketing journey. Some lovely gifts hide behind the door of Junction Arts. Bowling - they are all looking for you to join up and take part what’s stopping you. The greens are a calling you this summer. Go grab that cuppa and flick through the pages of the June/July magazine and catch you in August! Sue x

Who doesn’t love a puppy?

Guide Dogs is seeking volunteers in Aberdeen - could this be you? Commitment : to raise a puppy for a year. ‘Puppy walkers’ start puppies on their journey to becoming fully-fledged guide dogs, caring for them until they are ready for training school. Volunteering Consultant Emma Murton said: “Like all puppies, they start off as little bundles of fluff – and mischief! It’s amazing to see them develop and grow. Volunteers teach their puppy basic obedience and socialise them by taking them into lots of different environments, such as shops and cafes, and on public transport. The puppy lives with the volunteer full time so they need to be able to spend the majority of the day with them and have direct access to a secure garden. It’s a hugely rewarding role and there’s always an immense feeling of pride when a volunteer hears their puppy has qualified as a guide dog. To find out more, call 03451430203 or visit www.guidedogs.org.uk/volunteering.

Did you know... A puppy will normally be placed with the volunteer between 6-8 weeks of age and will leave for formal training at one of the Guide Dogs training schools between 12-14 months of age. It is possible to become a puppy walker even if you have a pet dog, as long as it is of suitable temperament. There are around 530 guide dog owners in Scotland. It costs just under £57,000 to train and support a guide dog from birth to retirement. Take advertising space today... t : 07813 964 875

Story of Success, 10 years on at the Junction On the 4th of July 2008 local artist Elaine Thomson opened the doors of Junction art and gifts for the first time.

The gallery space on Holburn Street, Aberdeen, began with a strong emphasis on supporting local talent and has now grown to support talented artists and designers from across the whole of the UK. Growth of the business continued with the introduction of the bespoke picture framing service in Sept 2010. This also prompted the name and branding change, shortening it to today’s Junction arts. Elaine then welcomed her first member of Staff in 2013 and now has 2 part time members of staff to help with both the framing and day to running of the business. In 2015 we had a complete re-fit of the space from vintage shabby chic to a fresh industrial look. Giving us much more display space for even more great hand made products. To celebrate the 10th anniversary Elaine has invited all artists or makers that have exhibited with her across the last 10 years to submit a piece 10x10 inches in size or that would sit

comfortably on a 10x10 inch display board. These works will be on display from the 30th June – 4th August. Elaine admits it has been challenging at times, especially in the initial 3 years of business, but feels it has defiantly been worth it. “Seeing a loyal customer base grow over the years has been great, meeting people both customers and creative’s and making new friends is a bonus I never expected. Being able to support such a wealth of talent by creating an outlet for their work in their own city has been so important to me as well as working with many creative individuals from further afield.” [It has been great having you as part of our journey too. Congratulations Elaine and the team here’s to the next 10!]

Hypnotherapy & Fear of Flying

L

ike most phobias, fear of flying can take over your life. You may avoid flying altogether or you may board the plane but use alcohol or anti anxiety medications to get through it.

The fears linked to a flying phobia are anticipatory in that you’re scared of what you think could happen during the flight, rather than responding to something that does happen. It can also be linked to other phobias. For example, you might also have claustrophobia (a fear of enclosed spaces) or a fear of heights. Both of these phobias can be a factor while you’re flying. Being scared of losing control is another common culprit. Hypnotherapy is one of the most effective interventions for anxiety and it works very well for treating phobias too - including fear of flying! It has so much success because it can alter your thoughts and behaviour at the unconscious level. You’ll be given hypnotic suggestions and other tools to change the way that your mind works so that you react differently in the build up to a flight and during it. This can calm you and help you to take control of your emotions when you next take a flight. The end result? You’ll be able to detach yourself from the fear of flying and replace anxious thoughts and behaviour with calm and healthier behaviour. For an initial consultation, call me on 07867936505 and enjoy it at 50% off, that’s half price quoting The Gazette! Looking forward to hearing from you 

A Brief History of Aberdeen Bowling Club Aberdeen Bowling Club has not always operated from the present site at Carlton Place. In fact, the Club’s origins can be traced back to the 1880’s, when a new bowling and tennis club was formed at a site just off Queen’s Lane. This was the first recorded Bowling Club in the city of Aberdeen. At the time, the Queen’s Lane site had been earmarked for the construction of a small industrial unit, incorporating a tall chimney, but there was a great deal of opposition to these plans from the residents of Queen’s Road. To ensure that the ground was quickly removed from the market and put to more “..genteel..” uses, a new Club was formed on 3rd March, 1882 - known as the West End Bowling and Lawn Tennis Club - which quickly acquired the land and commenced laying out the grounds and Pavilion. The budget for the entire project was set at £600.

Because of the expense involved in moving the Bowling Club to the new site, a fundraising event was organised, called the Grand Bazaar, which was held in the Music Hall in 1926. The proceeds generated by this meant that the Club’s new premises and green were soon completed at Carlton Place, and the entire bowling club moved there shortly afterwards. The old site continued to be used for tennis, with 5 courts being used in total. In 1965, a separate Ladies Club was formed, The Carlton Ladies Bowling Club. Whilst still under the general umbrella of the Aberdeen Bowling Club (and operating from the same premises), this allowed ladies to play more regularly and gave them the power to hold their own competitions. Before this, the only ladies allowed on the green were the wives of members, and even then they were only allowed to play on an infrequent and noncompetitive basis. In 2018, the first bowls of the new season were rolled by Jim and Ella Murray, the

By the summer of 1883 the tennis courts had been constructed and the bowling green laid out, and by September of that year the first bowling matches were played there. The Club was formally opened in June 1884. Membership increased rapidly, but because the bowling green only had 4 rinks, it slowly became apparent that it was becoming too small for the increasing number of players. A new site was sought - and eventually found at Carlton Place, and a budget of £3000 was set for the construction of the new Pavilion and Bowling Green. Turf from the Lancashire marshes was used exclusively for the new green, as at the time it was considered to be the finest playing surface for lawn bowls.

Club’s oldest married couple. They were presented with a commemorative certificate by Jackie Lockhart, a Scottish multiple goldmedallist at curling. The Club continues to offer a varied programme of events, and is always keen to welcome new members.

Barbecued Rack of Ribs Pre-cooking ribs in a pan of simmering water before placing them on the barbecue will ensure meltingly tender meat every time. This method also saves space on the barbecue as the final cooking time with the sauce is much shorter. Serve with a spicy chunky tomato salsa, if liked. Serves: 4 Ready in: 1 hour Ingredients : 2-3 racks of pork ribs (see Tip) 6 tbsp tomato ketchup 3 tbsp maple syrup 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 2 tbsp sunflower oil 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1-2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed

Cook the ribs on the edge of a hot barbecue for 10-15 minutes, turning and basting with any remaining sauce until the ribs are lightly charred in places. Alternatively, the ribs can be cooked under a medium preheated grill.

Place the ribs in a large pan and cover with cold water. Bring to the boil then skim off any scum from the surface of the water. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for 45 minutes. Meanwhile, place the rest of the ingredients in a pan and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Leave to cool. Remove the racks from the pan and drain on a board lined with kitchen paper. Leave to cool for 5 minutes then brush each rack liberally with some of the sauce.

TIP : Most large supermarkets sell racks of ribs or ask your local butcher to prepare them for you. Single ribs will work just as well (you’ll need about 2kg in weight), just reduce the simmering time to about 25 minutes.

Around Britain High Points & Peaks 1. Ben Nevis, Highland - Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Scotland, Great Britain, and whole of The British Isles. Thought to take its name from either the Scots Gaelic nibheis, meaning ‘venomous’, or else nèamh-bhathais, roughly equating to ‘head in the clouds’, some 125,000 climbers and walkers reach the mountain’s 1,344m (4,409ft) peak each year. 2. Skelton, Cumbria - Completed in 2001, Britain’s tallest manmade structure is the Skelton transmitting station mast in Cumbria. It stands at an impressive height of 365m (1,197ft) – more than 40m (131ft) taller than the Eiffel Tower 3. Chancellor’s Court, Birmingham University, Birmingham - The Joseph Chamberlain Memorial Clock Tower at Birmingham University stands taller than the Statue of Liberty and, at 100m (328ft), is the tallest free-standing clock tower in Britain. In fact, it was the tallest clock tower in the world until as recently as 2011. 4. Guy’s Tower, London - Forming part of University College London, Guy’s Tower – or, officially, The Tower Building of Guy’s Hospital – was completed in 1973. Its highest point stands at 143m (469ft), and contains thirty-four storeys, enough to place it amongst the tallest buildings in the capital and the tallest hospital buildings in the world. 5. Skerryvore, Inner Hebrides - A remote reef 20km (12 miles) south of the Hebridean island of Tiree is the site of Scotland’s – and indeed Britain’s – tallest lighthouse. Skerryvore (48m/156ft) was built between 1838-44 by Alan Stevenson (son of the engineer Robert Stevenson, and uncle of Robert Louis Stevenson), and stands atop a rocky outcrop barely 280 square-feet in size at low tide. © Taken from The British Isles: A Trivia Gazetteer by Paul Anthony Jones

Walking Your Dog Enjoying long walks together should be one of the highlights of dog ownership, but it can so easily turn into a nightmare if you’re constantly battling against a strong dog. With the best will in the world, being pulled from pillar to post by an over-exuberant dog is no fun, but there is one thing you can do that will limit this type of behaviour. Non-pull dog harnesses are designed to help you retain control, and train your dog to walk well on the lead.

PETS

It’s a gentle way to encourage good behaviour, which can be reinforced every day. Reasons why harnesses work • Harnesses of this type generally clip on to a dog’s collar, and by attaching the leash in this position rather than on its back, pulling power is significantly reduced. • Non-pull harnesses are gentle training tools which allow owners to reinforce good behaviour with treats and longer walks. Unlike choke chains, which were

popular in the 1980s, there’s no danger of the dog’s throat or neck being damaged. This can be a big problem, even with standard dog collars if the dog pulls too hard. • Harnesses like these are designed with extra padding to cover areas where friction might occur, such as underneath the dog’s stomach and legs where the skin is delicate. Dogs are extremely sensitive to the mood of their owners, so if you are happy and relaxed when out walking, the two of you will form a closer bond.
