Hello everyone, How awesome would it be to say “I’m a puppy walker for the Guide Dogs?”. The school holidays will be upon us very soon and with that the road’s will have six week’s of quietness... mother’s will be pulling their hair out at the end, but did you know Bob and Lulu already have their new season school shoe stock for you to view. Who doesn’t love a puppy?
Guide Dogs is seeking volunteers in Aberdeen - could this be you? Commitment : to raise a puppy for a year. ‘Puppy walkers’ start puppies on their journey to becoming fully-fledged guide dogs, caring for them until they are ready for training school. Volunteering Consultant Emma Murton said: “Like all puppies, they start off as little bundles of fluff – and mischief! It’s amazing to see them develop and grow. Volunteers teach their puppy basic obedience and socialise them by taking them into lots of different environments, such as shops and cafes, and on public transport. The puppy lives with the volunteer full time so they need to be able to spend the majority of the day with them and have direct access to a secure garden. It’s a hugely rewarding role and there’s always an immense feeling of pride when a volunteer hears their puppy has qualified as a guide dog. To find out more, call 03451430203 or visit www.guidedogs.org.uk/volunteering.
Did you know... A puppy will normally be placed with the volunteer between 6-8 weeks of age and will leave for formal training at one of the Guide Dogs training schools between 12-14 months of age. It is possible to become a puppy walker even if you have a pet dog, as long as it is of suitable temperament. There are around 530 guide dog owners in Scotland. It costs just under £57,000 to train and support a guide dog from birth to retirement. Want to advertise contact Sue on 07813 964 875 or mail@gazettemagazines.com

Story of Success, 10 years on at the Junction On the 4th of July 2008 local artist Elaine Thomson opened the doors of Junction art and gifts for the first time.
The gallery space on Holburn Street, Aberdeen, began with a strong emphasis on supporting local talent and has now grown to support talented artists and designers from across the whole of the UK. Growth of the business continued with the introduction of the bespoke picture framing service in Sept 2010. This also prompted the name and branding change, shortening it to today’s Junction arts. Elaine then welcomed her first member of Staff in 2013 and now has 2 part time members of staff to help with both the framing and day to running of the business. In 2015 we had a complete re-fit of the space from vintage shabby chic to a fresh industrial look. Giving us much more display space for even more great hand made products. To celebrate the 10th anniversary Elaine has invited all artists or makers that have exhibited with her across the last 10 years to submit a piece 10x10 inches in size or that would sit

comfortably on a 10x10 inch display board. These works will be on display from the 30th June – 4th August. Elaine admits it has been challenging at times, especially in the initial 3 years of business, but feels it has defiantly been worth it. “Seeing a loyal customer base grow over the years has been great, meeting people both customers and creative’s and making new friends is a bonus I never expected. Being able to support such a wealth of talent by creating an outlet for their work in their own city has been so important to me as well as working with many creative individuals from further afield.” [It has been great having you as part of our journey too. Congratulations Elaine and the team here’s to the next 10!]

A little bitwould of beItaly... Your help appreciated
Fennel is a remarkable plant that produces a vegetable, a spice and an herb. All parts of the plant are edible and the flavour is a mild aniseed. The seeds are actually the fruit of the plant and are dried before using. Fennel belongs to the same botanical family as carrot, parsley, coriander and dill. In fact, fennel bears a strong resemblance to dill and is used in similar ways. Wild fennel has a bitter taste. Cultivated fennel is grown for the swollen base, often incorrectly called a bulb, which is used as a vegetable. Feathery fennel leaves are usually added to most fish dishes. Fennel also flavours gin and is a key ingredient of absinthe. During the first century, Pliny noticed that snakes ate fennel after shedding their skin and decided that they were doing so in order to restore their eyesight. Since then it has been used as a treatment for eye problems, while the Chinese and Hindus apply it as a rather ineffective snake bite remedy. During medieval times fennel was hung on doors to ward off evil spirits. The ancient Greeks believed fennel encouraged weight loss. More commonly, fennel is used as a digestive and breath freshener.

Hypnotherapy & Fear of Flying
L
ike most phobias, fear of flying can take over your life. You may avoid flying altogether or you may board the plane but use alcohol or anti anxiety medications to get through it.
The fears linked to a flying phobia are anticipatory in that you’re scared of what you think could happen during the flight, rather than responding to something that does happen. It can also be linked to other phobias. For example, you might also have claustrophobia (a fear of enclosed spaces) or a fear of heights. Both of these phobias can be a factor while you’re flying. Being scared of losing control is another common culprit. Hypnotherapy is one of the most effective interventions for anxiety and it works very well for treating phobias too - including fear of flying! It has so much success because it can alter your thoughts and behaviour at the unconscious level. You’ll be given hypnotic suggestions and other tools to change the way that your mind works so that you react differently in the build up to a flight and during it. This can calm you and help you to take control of your emotions when you next take a flight. The end result? You’ll be able to detach yourself from the fear of flying and replace anxious thoughts and behaviour with calm and healthier behaviour. For an initial consultation, call me on 07867936505 and enjoy it at 50% off, that’s half price quoting The Gazette! Looking forward to hearing from you

Here Comes the Bride
E
very bride wants to look beautiful on their wedding day and this means that as well as choosing the perfect dress, you need to pay attention to hair and make-up. These should reflect your personality and be worn with ease. A bride who rarely wears make-up is unlikely to be comfortable with a heavy application, and if you are used to a neat hairstyle a looser style may irritate. Go for make-up and hair trials. These will allow you to try out a number of ideas. Take along images of hairstyles and make up looks that you like, and take their professional advice as they will know what will work best. Specialists will also understand photographers’ requirements Weddings are often long events, so it is important that your make up has staying power. Some professionals use special fixing sprays. Creating the perfect base is an important element for longevity. The right shade of foundation is essential, especially when wearing a strapless gown. Matching foundation to your collarbone rather than your face provides consistent colour on body, face and neck. It’s probably best to highlight either your eyes, or your lips. Highlighting both can look too heavy. Eyebrows need definition and you should choose waterproof mascara. Flash photography can annihilate your blusher and make you look washed out, so take test shots before your wedding day to find out what works best.
and the length and texture of your hair. If you are worried about appearing taller than your groom, you may prefer not to choose a style that’s too high on top. A good hairdresser will want to know about your dress style, colour, and any accessories that you wish to wear in your hair in order to get a look that is totally complimentary. In addition to traditional veils and tiaras, sparkly clips and bands are available, or you may choose flowers to decorate your hair. If your hair is coloured, try your dress on with it to make sure the contrast is not too stark, unless you are seeking a dramatic look. Your final colour should be applied one to two weeks before. Conditioner is not recommended for your wedding day as it can make hair unmanageable. Products can be used to fix the style and add shine. Finally, when booking a hairdresser or a make-up artist, you should consider their personality. You may be feeling quite stressed or excitable during your preparations, so choose someone who can help create a relaxing, calm and fun atmosphere, so that you enjoy getting ready for your wedding day. Vegetable Growing by Pippa Greenwood
T
here is something lovely about this time of year: even on the less appealing days it rarely gets too chilly, the soil is warm and feels all the more full of potential. But there is no doubt that your vegetable growing may seem to be close to peaking and perhaps in some areas on the decline. Rather than forgetting the fun of growing your own until next year, why not add to what you already have and start some crops from fresh? If you’ve missed the boat totally and never actually planted anything this year, there’s still time to grow some tasty home grown vegetable and herbs....it’s not too late to start, but you’ll have to get your skates on. Knowing what responds best to late sowing is the key, and knowing what might be worth the risk has the potential to be the icing on the cake. That lovely warm soil is a real advantage to those somewhat tenuous sowings made right at the start of the season, but you may also have to spend more time watering your vegetables, especially when the plants are small. Sow yourself some ruby chard. These fantastically brightly coloured plants mean you can create something seriously good-looking as well as tasty. ‘Bright Lights’ is the wackiest with bright yellow, orange, red, pink and purple stems. It can be sown successfully into August and can be used as ‘baby leaves’ for salads or as an alternative to spinach.
20
Several of the oriental vegetables respond especially well to later sowing. Mizuna is one of my favourites. With its pretty divided leaves and ability to grow very fast, it can be sown right through from now and into September. Good in stir fries or as a salad ingredient, Mizuna does best in a sunny site. A covering of fleece helps to keep the flea-beetle away and so prevent the leaves becoming riddled with tiny holes. Spring onions make really tasty additions to salads, ploughman’s lunches and stirfries. They grow rapidly and although it is getting late, a prompt sowing now should still give you a crop of tiny spring onions
Check out our website : www.gazettemagazines.com
in October. Sow enough to leave some in the soil where you can then harvest fullsized versions in March. Carrots can be sown for many weeks of the year and some varieties of ‘maincrop’ carrot including ‘Ideal’ can still be sown until early August. Sow within the week and you’ll be cropping from autumn to Christmas time. Choose a light soil, free from stones, or grow in a deep container. If in doubt about sowing times, just check the packet. I love eating them, but hate buying those ridiculously expensive baby spinach leaves, but grow your own and you can have as many as you like for little outlay. They are perfect in salads and sandwiches....and much, much tastier and more tender (and a lot cheaper) than those you buy in cellophane bags. Make successional sowings from now and in to
September and in five to six weeks you can harvest the baby leaves. If you like full-sized spinach leaves, then just leave the crop in the ground and allow it to grow a little more. Chinese cabbage is another late-season stalwart. It is one of the fastest growers I know and perfect for anyone who wants a delicate steamed vegetable or a wonderfully tasty and crunchy addition to a Chinese style meal. Also known as Chinese leaves, if you sow promptly you should be harvesting in late October. If you enjoy miniature beetroot or baby beet as they’re often known, then buy a packet of beetroot seed and sow some of them promptly for a delicious, crop of small-sized beetroot from the autumn until Christmas. Gardening article contd ... French beans are so much better when grown at home. It is hard to make them tough or tasteless. A speedy sowing now should produce plenty of beans that you can harvest in mid-autumn. Choose a variety such as ‘Tendergreen’ and it should perform well. Kohl rabi is, admittedly, a peculiar looking vegetable as it has really tasty and crisp swollen stems, but it is perfect for adding to salads and great in stir fries too. It performs well in most areas if sown up until about the middle of this month, and just nine to ten weeks after sowing you should be able to harvest your first crop. There are numerous different colours and shapes of salad leaf available and they can be sown now, either singly or in combination. Simply use scissors to snip off what you need and as long as you don’t cut too low, they’ll act as a cut-andcome-again crop. Look out for mixed seed packs including all sorts of tasty varieties such as rocket, baby beet, lettuce and basil. As conditions become cooler, cover the row with fleece. Rocket with its spicy dark green leaves makes a great ingredient for salads and because the plants grow so fast, a sowing made now will soon be producing a brilliant crop. Make successional sowings every couple of weeks. There...almost too much to eat! A Brief History of Aberdeen Bowling Club Aberdeen Bowling Club has not always operated from the present site at Carlton Place. In fact, the Club’s origins can be traced back to the 1880’s, when a new bowling and tennis club was formed at a site just off Queen’s Lane. This was the first recorded Bowling Club in the city of Aberdeen. At the time, the Queen’s Lane site had been earmarked for the construction of a small industrial unit, incorporating a tall chimney, but there was a great deal of opposition to these plans from the residents of Queen’s Road. To ensure that the ground was quickly removed from the market and put to more “..genteel..” uses, a new Club was formed on 3rd March, 1882 - known as the West End Bowling and Lawn Tennis Club - which quickly acquired the land and commenced laying out the grounds and Pavilion. The budget for the entire project was set at £600.
Because of the expense involved in moving the Bowling Club to the new site, a fundraising event was organised, called the Grand Bazaar, which was held in the Music Hall in 1926. The proceeds generated by this meant that the Club’s new premises and green were soon completed at Carlton Place, and the entire bowling club moved there shortly afterwards. The old site continued to be used for tennis, with 5 courts being used in total. In 1965, a separate Ladies Club was formed, The Carlton Ladies Bowling Club. Whilst still under the general umbrella of the Aberdeen Bowling Club (and operating from the same premises), this allowed ladies to play more regularly and gave them the power to hold their own competitions. Before this, the only ladies allowed on the green were the wives of members, and even then they were only allowed to play on an infrequent and noncompetitive basis. In 2018, the first bowls of the new season were rolled by Jim and Ella Murray, the
By the summer of 1883 the tennis courts had been constructed and the bowling green laid out, and by September of that year the first bowling matches were played there. The Club was formally opened in June 1884. Membership increased rapidly, but because the bowling green only had 4 rinks, it slowly became apparent that it was becoming too small for the increasing number of players. A new site was sought - and eventually found at Carlton Place, and a budget of £3000 was set for the construction of the new Pavilion and Bowling Green. Turf from the Lancashire marshes was used exclusively for the new green, as at the time it was considered to be the finest playing surface for lawn bowls.
Club’s oldest married couple. They were presented with a commemorative certificate by Jackie Lockhart, a Scottish multiple goldmedallist at curling. The Club continues to offer a varied programme of events, and is always keen to welcome new members.
