utumn is full of colour and preps you for the end of the year festivities. I have put a bit of Christmas cheer in this magazine and I’ve started the Gift Guide - as I know some of you will already have completed your shopping and others are starting with this pay packet! So please do take a wee look at what you can buy locally. There is also a plethora of Christmas markets, fairs, ladies evenings etc well worth popping into and supporting local and charitable causes. Fed up of gifting presents? Then why not gift your time and take a relative/friend along to some of the Choral evenings happening in December - I’m sure that would go down really well.

The clubs and classes section of the magazine is full to brimming so might have to put a halt on new listings for the time being. It is great that it is being well received and I do hope you are finding it more useful with it being alphabetical now! I’ve also highlighted the days that the classes are on so hope that jumps out at you if you are undecided about what to go too.

I know prices for food shopping in general have gone up but the price of butter at the moment is RIDICULOUS! I do a lot of baking, and obviously it tastes nicer with ‘real butter’. I usually buy the shop brand one! A year ago I was paying 85p-97p for 250g I am now having to pay £1.40-£1.47 - I don’t have a solution at the moment just really remarking upon the price hike!

Tree Surgeons A rboriculturalist is another name for a tree surgeon and at this time of year, especially after all the heavy weather we have been experiencing, you may need to call on one of these professionals to help repair or remove trees in or around your garden.

It’s better to call them in before the winter really sets in as, if it snows heavily, the extra weight can cause a lot of damage to trees and possibly your property too, if the branch falls on your house or car.

An arboriculturalist can check for dead wood, dangerously split branches and can identify diseased trees. In fact, a fully trained professional can work on your tree from the roots to the tip to keep it healthy, safe and attractive.

However tempting it is to work on a tree yourself, please take into account that working up a ladder is incredibly dangerous and the basic rule is only to work on those branches you can easily reach by standing on the ground. Anything higher than that should involve the professionals who have trained long and hard for this very purpose. They have the qualifications, know-how, equipment and insurances that only the professionals provide.

Another point to remember is that a well-established tree may well have a Tree Preservation Order on it, which means that you need to check with your local authority before attempting any major work on it. Also check with them if you live in a Conservation Area. If either applies you will need to go to your local planning department to get permission to carry out the work.

These days, far too many ‘cowboys’ operate in this business and although the ‘cowboys’ will undoubtedly be cheaper than a trained tree surgeon, you may end up with more problems than you started with, as the professional company will have invested in the correct training and protective equipment. Reputable companies never solicit work by knocking on doors and will always have an

Once you have found a genuine arboriculturalist, check their qualifications, experience and make sure they have up-to-date insurance.

References are a good idea too, follow them up and look at work they have done locally. Ask for a full written quotation and make sure you know whether VAT, removal of branches and tidying up is included in that as well. If you wish to keep the wood, then make that clear from the start as you may save quite a bit of money. And never pay until the job is finished!

Fish Pie -

serves 4

At this time of year, what you want for tea is a plate of pure velvety comfort and not much can beat a homemade fish pie for that. You can use a mix of fresh and smoked fish, such as salmon, haddock, cod and smoked haddock, as well as a few prawns and mussels to create a tasty mix.

Most recipes will cook the fish in the milk used to make the sauce, leaving you with a flaky, smooth mix, not to mention extra washing up. This recipe gives you a chunky, satisfying mix and means you can prepare the pie in advance to safely reheat at your leisure, say make it on a lazy Sunday afternoon for an easy tea on Monday? Easy to prepare, warming, luxurious to eat…and simple to serve. What more can you ask for!

1lb / 450g Mixed fish fillets, skinned & boned 1 pack of cooked mixed shellfish 1 large onion, finely diced the white of one leek, finely sliced 4oz / 100g butter plus extra for glazing 3 heaped dessert spoons plain flour 2 pints/ 1lt milk ¼ pint / 150ml double cream chopped fresh dill and parsley The juice of half a lemon salt and pepper to taste 4 or 5 large potatoes butter and milk to taste

If you are intending to eat the pie as soon as you have made it, heat the oven to 180°c/350°f and skip all the parts about cooling stuff down and keeping in the fridge. Just mix it up as per the recipe and straight in the oven. Otherwise, straight to step 2.

2.

To make the sauce, melt the butter in a large pan and fry the onions and leek until they are tender and translucent, but not starting to brown. Sprinkle in the flour. Cook the flour for a minute or two, stirring hard over a low to medium heat and then start to add the milk and cream, a little at a time, stirring constantly to remove any lumps. Once you have added all the milk and cream, continue stirring until the sauce reaches the boil, turn down the heat and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes. Finally, stir in some chopped parsley and/or dill to taste and the lemon juice. You should be left with quite a thick sauce when it is ready but don’t worry, liquid from the fish will thin it down as it bakes. Tear a circle of greaseproof paper to fit the pan, rub with a little butter and place over the surface of the sauce to prevent a skin forming while it cools.

3. Cut the fish into good sized chunks and drain and rinse the shellfish. When the sauce has cooled, stir the fish through the sauce and place into a well buttered pie dish. Boil the potatoes until they are tender and mash with butter and milk.

Season to taste and, after it’s cooled a little, spoon or pipe over the top of your pie. Spread it out evenly and then run a fork across the surface to rough it up a little. Glaze with melted butter and it’s ready. Keep it covered in the fridge until you’re ready for dinner.

Food Myths

By Sheryl Walters Eating is perhaps the most delightful and captivating endeavour that we humans partake in. It is at the heart of every culture in the world.

It unites friends and families together. Most holidays worldwide have unique recipes to go along with them. It is our fuel for life, and without it we don’t exist.

However, many of our current eating habits don’t seem to be giving us the energy and vibrance that we should get from our food. Here are a few myths that many people believe in, that may be causing them to feel less then their optimum.

As long as I diet most of the time, I can eat whatever I want the rest Getting into eating habits that are healthy and sustainable is the best diet. Eating really well and then binge eating loads of rubbish can cause yoyo weight loss and gain. Find a balanced diet that works for you, which you can make part of your everyday life.

I could never get through the day without caffeine You may believe that caffeine gives you that extra boost, and that is true provided you have it once in a while. If you have it daily, your adrenal glands become exhausted. These glands need to function well in order for us to feel energetic and alive. That afternoon sleepiness is often a sign of the adrenals being tired. Ultimately, drinking several cups of caffeine per day is going to cause you to feel tired and uninspired.

I don’t need water because I drink plenty of tea and coffee Tea (unless it is herbal) and coffee can be dehydrating. Drinking water, herbal tea, and eating plenty of fruit and vegetables will ensure

that your body is hydrated enough for you to feel vibrantly well.

Skipping breakfast helps me to lose weight Not eating breakfast does not help you to lose weight; in fact it may actually cause you to gain weight since your blood sugar becomes imbalanced. Eating healthy foods, including breakfast is the key to losing weight. Just some fruit and nuts will do the trick if you don’t fancy food in the early hours, but eating breakfast is part of a healthy diet.

Low-fat foods help you lose weight Good fat, such as the fat in many nuts, avocados, and fish, are necessary for optimum health. And packaged foods with low fat labels are often full of other types of fattening rubbish.

Crisps can be healthy…they are potatoes after all While crisps may be potatoes, they are full of hydrogenated fat…which can stay in the body for weeks. There are so many other healthy snacks out there, like corn crisp cakes with hummus, or Ryvita with avocado.

I can eat the same thing everyday provided it’s healthy A diet that is varied is a diet that is packed with all of the essential nutrients for healthy living. You cannot get everything you need by eating the same thing everyday, even if it is healthy. There are so many lovely foods out there like quinoa, lentils, buckwheat, and spelt. And there variety of fantastic vegetables around to get creative with - branch out a little. A diet heavy on wheat and dairy may be causing you some health problems because you have simply eaten too much of them!

The importance of having a Power of Attorney in place... and the pitfalls of not having one.

Contemplating a time when you are no longer able to make your own decisions is a daunting prospect. Sadly, however, this does become a reality for many people. It is estimated that around ninety thousand people in Scotland have dementia1 and that this figure is set to rise rapidly in the coming decades. It is thought that by 2025, one million people in the UK will be suffering from the illness2. These are not issues that should only be considered by the elderly though. Your ability to deal with your own affairs can be impaired at any time due to an accident or other unforeseen circumstances. Having a Power of Attorney in place can make things easier for both you and your family at what is already a difficult time.

What is a Power of Attorney?

A Power of Attorney is a document you can sign, which appoints another person (your Attorney) to make decisions on your behalf and help to manage your affairs. There are two strands to a Power of Attorney - Continuing (financial) and Welfare. It is usually recommended that both are put in place at the same time in order to ensure all eventualities are covered.

The Continuing part provides the Attorney with a range of powers allowing them to deal with your finances. For example, they are empowered to manage your bank accounts, sell any property you may own, make decisions regarding your investments and undertake tax planning on your behalf. If you own a business, the Attorney can also be appointed to oversee its running in your place.

The second strand essentially allows your Attorney to deal with your day-to-day welfare and healthcare. Powers to consent to or refuse medical treatment for you, put in place care arrangements and decide where you will live, are given.

These welfare powers could only be used if a medical professional were to certify that you no longer have the capacity (capability) to make these decisions for yourself. On the other hand, the financial powers can be used by the Attorney, with your authority, any time after the document is in place.

It therefore allows them to assist you with your finances should physical frailty or a stay in hospital prevent you from dealing with these matters alone. The powers would then continue to have effect should you lose capacity in the future.

Who should you appoint?

The main point to stress is that you must have absolute trust in those appointed as they will have the power to make many important decisions and act as if they were you for a number of purposes. It is recommended that you consider appointing more than one Attorney, so they can all assume the role, or with someone appointed as a substitute who can step in should the first named person be unable to act.

Are safeguards in place?

The law provides a number of safeguards to help protect the granter of a Power of Attorney. When putting in place the document, a Solicitor or medical professional requires to meet with you to certify that he or she is satisfied you have the requisite capacity to sign the deed and are not under any undue influence to do so. There is also a Code of Practice and guiding principles which an Attorney must follow including that any decisions made should be for your benefit and your past and present wishes should be taken into account. You should also be encouraged to exercise and develop whatever skills you do have concerning financial, property or welfare matters.

Before it can be used, a Power of Attorney requires to be registered with a body called the Office of the Public Guardian (Scotland) (OPG). They can supervise Attorneys and investigate complaints made regarding their actions. If they have concerns, the OPG can, for example, request that the Attorney provides a full accounting of their dealings with your finances.

What happens if there is no Power of Attorney?

If an adult loses capacity, it can be impossible for the family to manage his or her affairs, and they do not automatically have the authority to do this without a Power of Attorney in place. Someone would require to apply to the Court to be appointed as your Guardian, which is a far more expensive and time-consuming process. It is also more invasive, with medical professionals and social workers being required to interview you and submit reports to the Court. It would then be for the Sheriff to decide who should act as your Guardian, whereas with a Power of Attorney you are the one deciding who will assume the role and can appoint someone you trust. Moreover, without a Welfare Attorney appointed, the Local Authority have the power under legislation to take steps relating to an incapable adult’s care, including placing him or her in a residential home. If a Power of Attorney is already in place, the Attorney of your choosing can assist you as a matter of convenience whilst you still have capacity, but can also intervene quickly should capacity be lost.

Conclusion Although it is not an easy prospect to consider, there may come a time when you are rendered incapable of dealing with your own finances or welfare. It is never too early to put in place a Power of Attorney and doing so can give you and your family piece of mind that your affairs are in order should illness or injury strike.
