Deeside Local Food Festival 2017 The Deeside Local Food Festival, organised by The Mixing Bowl Aberdeen, is taking place on Sunday 17th September 2017, 11am – 4pm, at Cults Academy and it looks set to be their biggest event yet. Now in its third year, the festival brings together producers, artisans and vendors from across Aberdeenshire to celebrate local food and drink. Visitors have the opportunity to meet the producers behind some of the region’s finest food and drink at the festival’s Produce Market, which has been extended this year to include over forty stalls. Craig Wilson, The Kilted Chef, from Eat on the Green will be at the event performing cooking demonstrations using local produce. This year visitors will have the opportunity to cook alongside Craig in his Kilted Kitchen and create some inspirational dishes. Cults Academy playground will be transformed into a Street Café where there will be a variety of lunch food to choose from, alongside the food vendors visitors can enjoy live music from local artists. Sinclair School of Highland Dancing *Pupils of the Sinclair School of Highland Dancing recently staged a week of performances to family, friends and the local community at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre at ISA. The show, named Tartan Times, involved over 120 performers, from age four right up to our adult dancers, all of whom came together to perform a varied and exciting collection of traditional and modern Scottish dances. * *In the lead up to the show, the dancers were working hard, fundraising for two local charities chosen by themselves; Friends of Anchor and Charlie House. Not Ready for Retirement? Even though retirement ages have been increased recently many people find that when the time comes we don’t feel quite ready to down tools and head to the allotment or the golf course. All the knowledge, skills and qualifications we’ve achieved over the years can’t just be switched off, and we might not feel ready to step out of working life entirely. So if the calendar says one thing but our heart and mind disagree, what should we do? Don’t despair; there are in excess of 1.3 million pensioners still in work. We represent 11% of the total workforce, and are living proof that many companies recognise our experience. Staged Retirement Talk to your boss or line manager in advance of your retirement. Ask if you can stage your retirement over a couple of years, maybe dropping to a three day week, then two days etc. Many companies are happy to accommodate loyal employees. Stress that it will make any transitions run more smoothly because you will be able to pass on your knowledge to your replacement and allow them to gradually take over. If you regularly deal with clients it can be very reassuring for them to know that you are still around. Benefits Find out what your entitlements are. When you get an interview: Be positive Stress the good reputation of the firm plus other positive information. Play to your strengths Explain how the skills you’ve acquired throughout your working life will benefit this company Play down the negatives of retirement Describe any voluntary work, hobbies studying and training you’ve completed. As an older person Play on your experience and loyalty but… Reassure the employer You are hard working, flexible and willing to learn. Think of retirement as a fresh start. Hillwalking article Simon Sawers Views from the summits What a fantastic summer we’re having - warm, sunny and just enough rain to keep the garden going! This can be a prolific time for hillwalkers with summits all over Scotland just begging to be conquered! For many of us, other things in our busy lives get in the way of escaping to the hills but it’s all a question of prioritisation let’s get our boots on, plan our routes and get out there! I’m lucky enough to have time for some hillwalking, although it doesn’t feel enough sometimes, and can mention
2 of my trips so far this summer. The first was to the Loch Lochy Munros of Meall na Teanga and Sron a’ Choire Ghairbh from which the views up and down the Great Glen were just stunning. It was like a view from a plane and seeing the size and scale of this huge geological fault line that runs for 62 miles between Inverness and Fort William was both impressive and humbling at the same time. How small are we compared to the huge natural forces that created this? The air was so clear that the full length was visible in one huge panorama that the photo
doesn’t do justice to. The second trip was to the Torridon area, well known for its massive and steep Munros of Beinn Alligin, Liathach and Beinn Eighe: However I was there on a Corbett hunting trip and would say that the Corbetts in the area are even better than their only slightly higher brothers. Eoin, Baosbheinn and Beinn Dearg are all just to the North of the Torridon Munros but are far more remote and just as, if not more, challenging. The views of the Munros from these Corbets are both unusual and impressive. In particular, the north side of Beinn Eighe displays the charming grandeur of her ridges, not often seen. These are big days out and the tops are covered in loose angular scree that means slow going. However, I was blessed with excellent weather and plenty of daylight managing 4 of these Corbetts over 2 days, leaving Beinn Dearg for another day. You could say that you can’t do too much hillwalking! However,
the more you do the more prone you are to repetitive type injuries and I recently strained the sheath around one of my Achilles tendons. Although not too painful it did run the risk of a worse injury. I went to an excellent local physiotherapist and he worked wonders - several massages and strict instructions for remedial exercises worked a treat. A good hillwalking friend of mine has not been so lucky - he’s been suffering with Morten’s Neuroma in his foot which is a painful nerve condition that has limited his walking for a few months now. Some of these conditions just happen and regular exercise is so important, but this also
brings into focus the need to look after our bodies, especially as we get older, and to combine exercise regimes with body maintenance regimes. Enjoy your summer and autumn in the hills! Mannofield Hillwalking and Rambling Club Our club has existed for almost 30 years. Several of the original members are still keen walkers with us today. Garden View The ‘C’ Word I’m going to say the ‘C’ word...it’s very naughty of me I know. But the children are back in school so won’t hear me... here goes...forgive me... Christmas! Before you all pelt me with clay flowerpots just hear me out. A little advance planning now and when skies are dark and the north wind blows you’ll reap the benefits of my advice, I promise. Everyone knows about potted hyacinths, ubiquitous during the festive period. They smell heavenly but let’s face it everyone has them and they’re a bit old-hat. I have the answer: scented narcissi. To my mind they’re more elegant and fit better into contemporary homes. The two varieties I grow are Paper White, which is my favourite, because it’s white and so seems to fit in with the whole Christmas theme, and Grand Soleil d’Or for when I need a sunnier, yellow bloom.
Both varieties have tiny flowers, clustered at the top of straight, long stems and, if planted now they will be in flower before Christmas. I tend to plant a few pots now (they’re great as economical gifts for those hard-to-buy-for elderly relatives) plus a pot per week for myself between now and the end of October so I can have the luxury of scented bulbs continuously in flower for a couple of months during the bleak winter period. You need to buy ‘prepared’ bulbs which have been heat-treated to make them flower before Christmas. I tend to plant one variety per pot because I think that provides more impact but you can plant to suit your own tastes. I use a nice 15cm / 6 inch pot with drainage holes (so there’s no danger of water-logging) and fill it with soil-less multipurpose compost. I cram as many bulbs in as I can, leaving just the pointy bit of the bulb protruding. Then I water them and keep them in a cool dark place until the flower shoots are visible. Within a fortnight of bringing them into a warm room they will flower. Have some split green canes on hand with some twine so if the stems need support you can provide it. Then just sniff and enjoy. Can sleeping apart bring you closer together? By Kate McLelland
The duvet twitches, followed by footsteps on the bedroom floor and the creaking of a door: it’s four o’clock in the morning and your partner is on the move for the second time that night. Thanks to this interruption, you’re now wide awake, and as you lie there in the darkness, you wonder how to broach the subject of sleeping in separate beds... Most individuals need around eight hours’ sleep a night to function well, but this can vary from person to person. As a general rule, if you wake up feeling tired and have to catch up with a nap during the day, you’re probably not getting enough sleep. In the short term the symptoms of sleep deprivation can include memory loss, difficulty in concentrating and mood changes, but in the longer term lack of sleep can result in serious conditions such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes. While the health argument alone is enough to justify a conversation about separate beds, it’s a difficult topic to discuss face-to-face. But if you’ve reached the end of your tether and are seriously considering the option of sleeping apart, there’s no need to feel alone. According to a 2015 survey by the National Sleep Foundation, almost one in four of us now sleep in separate beds or bedrooms, and in a recent poll by silversurfers.com, 84% of respondents aged 50+ said they believed sharing a bed wasn’t essential for a happy relationship. So what are the options if you do decide to sleep separately? When the time came to replace an old double bed, Max and Celia Stoddart from Hampshire took the decision to replace it with twin beds. Celia says: “The idea came to us when we booked a week in a hotel. We’d reserved a room with a double bed, but they only had a twin. When we got home at the end of the week, we both agreed that we’d slept better than we had done in years.” Vihann Khan’s sleep apnoea meant his snoring kept wife Nazneen awake at night. While he was receiving treatment, Nazneen regularly escaped to a spare bed set up in their guest room. Although Vihann’s condition has now improved, Nazneen still uses the spare bed from time to time. She says: “At times when I can’t sleep, it helps to know I have somewhere to escape. We always start out the night together, but he knows there’s a chance he’ll wake up alone in the morning.” Jill and Maurice McGiver from Renfrewshire were unhappy about the idea of sleeping apart, but both agreed that they would sleep better if they had more space. For them, investing in a kingsize bed was the solution. “We have an average-size bedroom and the bed now takes up most of the available space,” says Maurice, “but it has been worth the sacrifice to get a good night’s sleep. If you live in a small flat or a cottage, a kingsize bed may not work for you, but for us it’s been a lifesaver.” Although these couples have found different solutions to their sleeping problems, all three agree that the changes they have made have not only improved their health and wellbeing, but have also enhanced their relationships. So perhaps the idea that sleeping apart can bring you together isn’t so far-fetched after all!
Motorways: Four Lanes, or Three with a Hard Shoulder? If you’ve driven on Britain’s motorways recently, you can’t fail to have noticed that the hard shoulder is sometimes being turned into another lane. On some motorways this new lane is at times a lane and at others a hard shoulder. Indications on gantries above the lanes tell you when this is the case. These roads are termed “smart motorways” and there are three types: those with “Dynamic Hard Shoulder Running”, ones with “All Lane Running” and a third called “Controlled Motorways”. So, what exactly are these? When driving on a Dynamic Hard Shoulder motorway, expect the hard shoulder to be a lane at busy periods and a hard shoulder at other times; when it’s a lane you can use refuges, placed every 500m or so, to stop in an

All Lane Running is just that: the hard shoulder has gone, replaced by an emergency refuge every 2.5km. Controlled Motorways are like old style motorways: three or four lanes with a permanent hard shoulder. Except now the carriageways are subject to variable speed limits. If you breakdown on the first two types of motorway, and can nurse your car to a refuge, don’t just set off after fixing the fault: gone is the Highway Code directive of “gather speed on the hard shoulder and rejoin the carriageway”. Now you must contact the Highways Agency, who will then escort you back onto the carriageway. Statistically motorways are the safest roads in the UK, but with three lanes or sometimes four, variable limits and no continuous hard shoulder, it’s still best to know what kind of road you are travelling on.

Prime Mover Pathway I often hear from new clients that they have delayed coming to a class for the first time because they are fearful of what exercises will occur in class. Perhaps they won’t manage it, maybe the class will be hostile to them, or indeed the class may be too easy. Let me reassure anyone who may be thinking of coming to a Prime Mover Pathway community class that nothing could be further from the truth. As the instructor for 20 years, I have to enjoy what I do and so humour and enjoyment is at the forefront of any class I lead. You will be made to feel very welcome. The next conundrum for people is which class to attend? I have several ability led classes. There is the Seated Strength & Balance, the Standing Aerobics class or the Mat based Pilates & I Move freely. Try this: place the back of an upright chair against a wall. Using a timer, and from a standing position, count how many times you can sit down and stand up in 30 seconds. Below 10; between 10-20; above 20. Below 10: Seated Strength & Balance is not as easy as you may initially think. But it is a good starting place. If you are fearful of falling, or have a joint replacement, several health conditions which may impact your balance, this is the class to be. Between 10-20: Standing Aerobic class is an hour of exercise on your feet. After a good warm up we raise the heart rate by exercising to music, I add strengthening work both for legs, to get out of a chair, and upper body to carry the shopping. There is balance exercise to assist in standing on one leg, as you would do to reach up to your kitchen cupboards. Ending the class with stretches to keep everything moving well. Designed to improve the deeper layers of the body’s muscles to get everything working and reducing any strain you may have, and always improving strength. Shwedagon Pagoda Myanmar In Yangon, the former capital of Myanmar, a golden pagoda rises on Singuttara Hill, dominating the skyline as it has done, according to legend, for over 2,000 years. Far humbler in its early days, it is now over 100 metres high and is entirely covered in gold plates. Erected to house eight miraculous strands of the Buddha’s hair, rebuilt and extended over time, it is the most sacred monument in the country. Pilgrims add offerings of gold leaf every day, hoping to earn merits, though none could ever emulate Queen Shin Saw Pu who donated her weight in gold in the 15th century.

symbols and an umbrella crown encrusted with 4,531 diamonds, the largest a 76 carat solitaire. It defies imagination, and barefoot pilgrims and visitors must pause to catch their breath before proceeding clockwise around the stupa. Buddhist robes flutter all around, pink, brown, red or gold, and there is much bell ringing and chanting, prostrations, prayers, flickering lights and jasmine garlands leaving their scent in the air. The stupa is a closed structure but it can take an hour or two to stop at every pavilion and shrine. Among the most popular shrines are those dedicated to the eight days of the week (Wednesday is divided in two for astrological reasons), each one linked to a planet and a symbolic animal, giant bird, elephant, tiger and more. Many devotees make a wish at their birthday shrine, pouring water as a symbol of life and offering small umbrellas to keep away bad luck. Couples pray at the child-granting shrine, others meditate in the Footprints Pavilion or gaze at the well where the Buddha’s hair was cleaned
before it was enshrined. Meanwhile, tourists look up in awe at the 40 tonne bronze bell donated by King Thayarwaddy. Every morning at dawn, a monks’ procession makes it way to the pagoda to lay fresh offerings of flowers and food and wash the statues with sandalwood-scented water. Special celebrations are held at the time of the full moon, the Buddha’s birthday and the autumn Festival of Lights when over 9,000 candles are lit after dark. It is sheer magic and one almost forgets that in modern times the pagoda has witnessed its share of political rallies and turmoil. Today, as Myanmar’s fledgling democracy finds its feet, it is once again a purely religious site. When the authorities moved the capital to Nappyidaw in 2005, 320km to the north, they graced their brand new city with a replica of Shwedagon. But some say it is 30 cm lower than the original and could never replace the Great Yangon Pagoda, ‘glistening with its gold like a sudden hope in the dark night of the soul.’ (Somerset Maugham)
