Almost at our two year anniversary where does the time go? I would like to kick start by thanking Colin Grant for supplying us with some very informative articles over the last year and a half, helping introduce a few new businesses and some local characters. I’d also like to say thanks to the delivery team! You are just brilliant and do a great job of getting the magazine out and through the doors as quickly as possible. Like so many other’s I’m at a crossroads in my life! Kids are grown up and doing their own thing. So do I stay or do I go... Where to live and set up a new home, this is the question that has been teasing me for six months. Aberdeen, the shire or further south or even abroad! The beauty of doing the magazines is that I can actually live anywhere! Maybe Ellon is the place to be it certainly has a lot to offer when you read the letter we received in our mailbox. Would love to hear your own thoughts on that one. There is plenty to be keeping you busy this summer and enjoy your holidays when they come. Ellon Burns Club
A
fter 28 years of existence Ellon Burns Club is in danger of folding.
This could be the situation if some support is not forthcoming from people who enjoy the works of Scotland’s National Bard. Former Ellon Academy Rector Alan Cameron who was instrumental in setting up the club in 1988 would be sadly disappointed to see its demise. ‘Myself, Rob Merson and Jim Mortimer the main men behind the Club struggled to sell tickets for this year’s Burns Supper and are now seriously wondering if all the effort is really worthwhile’. ‘Over the years we have had quality speakers and performers but looking at the bigger picture we would be delighted if some younger Burns lovers could come along, to keep the works of Scotland’s greatest poet to the fore’. A crisis meeting was held recently and it was decided to look for some assistance. With this in mind Alan would welcome any help whatsoever from Burns loving AB41 residents to ensure The Ellon Burns Club does not disappear. Alan can be contacted on 01358 720130. Don’t confuse Panama with efficient tax planning
R
ecently, leaked documents from a Panama law firm revealed the tax avoidance activities of some of the world’s most rich and powerful people. It has been an embarrassing week for many, and has raised the issue of loopholes in our legal system and the moral judgement of those who use offshore tax havens. Few people are wealthy enough to be in a position to move assets to offshore tax havens, but financial advisers often talk about tax efficient financial planning for the general public. These are two very different types of financial planning activity and the two topics should not be confused. The Panama leaked documents reveal the affairs of the very wealthy who chose complicated tax structures in order to get around laws on paying tax in the country where they live. In the UK there are however simple and legitimate ways to reduce a tax bill: the government and HMRC actively encourage us to use them, and it is not tax evasion or tax avoidance. Reducing your tax bill legally can be as simple

as using an annual ISA allowance or engaging in good Inheritance Tax planning. As April is the start of a new tax year, it is something worth reviewing and considering now. Phil Anderson’s top tips for tax efficient financial planning Tax-efficient investments; It's not just ISAs that offer tax breaks The government is keen for people to use their ISA allowance to save and/or invest, and provide general allowances in order to encourage people to use them. The amount you can save or invest into an ISA in 2016/17 is £15,240 and any gains made are not treated as taxable income. You can transfer the money held in an ISA into a different ISA account, or between investments or cash, whenever you choose. For those who are comfortable in taking investment risk, they could reduce their tax bill by putting their money in an Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) or Venture Capital Trust (VCT). Both of these investments are designed to encourage
private investment in smaller companies by offering tax incentives to the investor. They are far more complex investment vehicles than ISA’s and can involve a significant amount of investment risk in return for the tax breaks, so it would be important to ensure the benefits are not outweighed by the risks. Tax plan with your spouse or civil partner There are tax reliefs which are available to married couples and civil partners, such as the Married Couples Allowance for those born prior to 1935 or the Marriage Allowance for those born after this date. However these only work when one person in the relationship earns less and pays the lower rate of income tax. In particular, to benefit from the Marriage Allowance as a couple, the lower earning partner needs to earn less than £11,000. Ensuring that any income producing assets are held jointly will also mean that any gains are split between the couple 50/50 and the tax due on these will be at each individual’s highest marginal rate of tax. So, again, if one partner pays

higher rate tax and one pays basic rate tax, more of the gains will be taxed at the lower amount. Incoming generating assets you can hold with your spouse include shares, investment funds, bank and building society accounts and property. It is worth seeking legal advice before transferring assets. Similarly, it can pay to hold assets which are likely to incur Capital Gains Tax (CGT) together. The most obvious example of this is with a second home or buy-to-let property, which can often incur a high CGT bill on sale due to an increase in value
since it was purchased. Each person has an annual CGT allowance (£11,100 in 2016/17) and so by holding a property jointly, you can each use the annual CGT allowance, as opposed to just one allowance if held in only one partner’s name. A capital gain is added to income earned in that tax year, so careful planning is essential before the disposal of this type of asset. Those who are unmarried should also seek professional advice as the gifting of assets, such as property or shares, could incur a capital gains (CGT) bill.

Planning for death; how to minimise the Inheritance Tax paid on your estate Many people find themselves approaching the later part of their life and are financially secure. For those who have a total estate which exceeds the threshold of £325,000 (£650,000 for married couples), then inheritance tax charged at 40% will have to be paid to HMRC on any amount which exceeds the threshold. There are exemptions which allow a person to reduce future inheritance tax bills and those who have significant savings

would be wise to consider using them. Everyone has an annual gift exemption worth £3,000, which removes this money from an estate regardless of how long you live. In addition, grandparents can give £2,500 to each grandchild who marries; parents can give £5,000. Gifting allowances are for each person, so a married couple can gift twice the amount. Wealthier taxpayers can also make regular gifts out of income, which will also be inheritance tax-free and can be paid monthly, annually or even termly, if, for example, it was to help pay school fees. Financial gifts which are regularly made and fall outside the general allowances should be carefully recorded. A letter from the benefactor to the beneficiary stating that the financial gift is being made from excess income is prudent. Provided that the benefactor can genuinely maintain their current standard of living, there is
no limit on how much they can gift this way. If any financial gift is made which falls outside of the allowances then the seven year rule applies. This means that if the benefactor survives the transfer by seven years it is disregarded for inheritance tax purposes. Sacrifice Salary It's possible to give up part of your salary in return for other non-taxable benefits, such as childcare vouchers, where the part of your gross salary you exchange for childcare vouchers is tax-free and exempt from National Insurance contributions (NI). Because of this, a basic rate taxpayer can make savings of up to £933 a year. You can also salary sacrifice into your pension. The added benefit when you pay additional money into your pension is that you also receive tax relief on the contributions made. This means for every £100 you pay into a pension,
an additional 20% is automatically added into your pension on your behalf. If you are a higher rate tax payer, paying 40% or 45% income tax, then you can claim the additional tax relief when you complete your Self-Assessment tax return. Paying into a pension is a good way to reduce your taxable income if you are employed or self-employed. For those who earn just over £50,000 and have children, reducing your income by making a pension contribution can ensure you continue to be eligible to receive child benefit. Sportsmans Dinner at Ellon Golf Club
I
n the run up to their 28th Annual Pro-Am Tournament, Ellon Golf Club recently held a Sport’s Dinner in the Clubhouse Lounge.
Ex Scotland team boss Craig Brown entertained an audience of over 100 with tales of his many years in both Scottish and English football management. Ex European Tour golfer Alan Tait then had the assembled guests in stitches with his humorous insight into life on the tour where he recalled playing with golfing superstars like American’s Ben Crenshaw and a young Tiger Woods. Sandwiched in between was Aberdeen Magician Garry Seagraves who amazed the audience with some amusing illusions and card tricks. Pro-Am Convenor Colin Grant kept the evening moving along as compere and later said he was delighted with the support the Club had received on the night. The local members and guests who attended were unanimous in agreeing it was a great night’s entertainment and a super night for the Club as a prelude to this year’s Pro-Am in July. Colin Grant

Aberdeenshire Libraries now provides a new resource – British Newspaper Archive which can be accessed online in any Aberdeenshire library.
T
here are over 10 million fully searchable pages, featuring more than 200 newspaper titles, dating from 1710 to 1955, from all over the UK and Ireland. Local newspapers include the Aberdeen, Banffshire and Stonehaven Journals, the Peterhead Sentinel, Aberdeen Evening Express and Aberdeen Herald. British Newspaper Archive is a rich source of news articles which cover every aspect news from major events such as the World Wars and sinking of the Titanic to local community happenings. Family history enthusiasts can view birth, marriage and death notices as well as related announcements such as engagements, anniversaries, in memoriam, obituaries, birthdays and congratulations. In addition users can view illustrations, such as photographs, maps and editorial cartoons, advertisements, including classifieds and shipping notices, and letters to the editor There is a My Research area where you can store and organise articles you have viewed for future access. Notes can also be added to any of the articles. It’s free to search but to view the original newspaper pages you need to be in one of our libraries and sign in to the service (after registering the first time) Access details are available at Ellon Library.

Here at AB41 Towers we rarely get letters to publish so it was a pleasant surprise to receive this one. Dear Editor,

I think it’s high time that people stopped banging on about how important it is to shop locally. It’s not that easy – I know because I tried it last week.
See what I mean. It’s 2016. When I go shopping, I want the big city experience, not this ‘small is beautiful’ stuff. A shopping trip isn’t complete unless I get to spend ages in the car, pay too much to park, queue to eat in a chain restaurant and take home a load of things I didn’t know I wanted. But the worst part of shopping locally is working out what to do with the time I save. I mean, apart from all the arts, craft and hobby groups, there’s walking cycling, badminton, tennis, swimming…
It turns out that the only things you can buy in Ellon are the week’s groceries and treats, fresh fish, fresh meat and freshly baked bread, tobacco and booze, designer clothes and casual wear, lingerie, shoes, coats, handbags, trainers and sporting goods, wedding outfits, kilts, school uniforms, toys and games, holidays, cosmetics, watches and jewellery, antiques, curios and all kinds of used stuff, pet supplies, artists’ materials, gifts, greetings cards, stationery, newspapers, magazines, stamps, books, fresh flowers and arrangements, plus gardening, DIY, decorating, automotive, craft and building supplies. You can buy hot and cold sandwiches, snacks and drinks, deli dishes made to order, chocolate goodies, Chinese, Indian, Thai, Italian and British cuisine to eat in or take away, but they all look like independent shops to me so you have to put up with freshly made food. You can see financial advisers, accountants and book-keepers, legal advisers, insurance brokers, chemists, opticians, dentists, doctors, nurses and undertakers. You can bet on most sports and the stock market. If you’re unsure, you can ask a tarot reader. You can manage your money, get a mortgage, find a place to rent or buy, or have your own place designed and built. Then you can carpet and furnish the place with new, used, antique, restored or upcycled furniture and a bespoke kitchen and have someone move your stuff in for you. You can have your hair, nails and eyebrows done, your body tanned and massaged, your clothes altered and cleaned, your whole appearance improved and your chakras aligned. Then you can have the new you photographed by a pro. You can learn to play a musical instrument and find a venue to play. In the meantime, someone can MOT and fix your car, fit new tyres, reupholster that old armchair, sort out your computer, operate on your injured cat, frame your favourite picture www.gazettemagazines.com t : 01224 949085

Ellon Conversation Café
is going to be held on the last Thursday of every month at the VSA Carers Support Service at 71 station Road, from 10.30 till 12 noon. It’s an opportunity for people to meet new people & have a fly cup and a blether and is open to all. There will usually be an activity of some sort as well – the January one had a jewellery making workshop.

Ellon Probus Club Eminent Aberdeen based Professor Hugh Pennington CBE was guest speaker at a recent meeting of the Ellon Probus Club. Professor Pennington who can be heard regularly on Radio gave a very thought provoking talk on Bacteria infected meat causing big problems throughout the Country over the last 50 years. He recalled being asked for advice in many Inquiries over the years including The Aberdeen Typhoid outbreak in 1964, The Wishaw Butcher Enquiry in 1996 and other cases in New Deer, Cumbria and South Wales. New regulations were brought in after this and Professor Pennington hopes they are implemented , but is still a bit concerned that he cannot say 100%, if all Meat and

Food suppliers are adhering to these regulations. Over the years, Ellon Probus Club has had many interesting guest speakers. They hold their meetings every second Thursday at the British Legion and around 30 to 35 members regularly attend. The Club celebrates 35 years in existence this year and President Dave Crossley and the members plan to hold a Celebration later in the year to commemorate the occasion. Colin Grant Senior

Denis Law Community Football Festival returns
bigger and better
Aberdeen Sports Village (ASV) is set to welcome more than 1300 participants to the annual Denis Law Legacy Trust Community Football Festival. ASV who partner the Trust, is playing host to the Football Festival, which this year has been extended to run from 11 May to 15 July. The event, will see individuals of all ages participate in a variety of sporting activities, and ASV are introducing an educational element to the Festival in order to remind the younger generation about the legendary status of football hero Denis Law, who originates from the Granite City. Denis has been a huge influence and driving factor in the development of the Festival in the city, giving people of all ages the opportunity to play the game he loves. The Community Football Festival, which is held in partnership with the Scottish Football Association, Aberdeen Football Club, Aberdeen Football Club Community Trust and Streetsport, will provide as many people as possible with the opportunity to participate in football related activities whilst educating them about the sport. It will include a number of activities including a walking football festival, coach education, ladies five-a-side football, corporate seven’s, a Streetsport evening and many more skills and technique training opportunities Denis Law Legacy Trust are delighted for the support of the key sponsors including Nexen Petroleum UK Limited and Langstane Press. A family fun day will also take place on Sunday 10 July, where over 1,300 guests will visit ASV to enjoy a fun-filled day of games and activities for all ages.
