Eurovisie SongTravestival, kleurrijk zangfestijn met een knipoog

Gelukkig kunnen we een week eerder al in de stemming komen met de drag versie: de 18e editie van het jaarlijkse het SongTravestival van Travestiecabaret Amsterdam. Tien kandidaten laten hun gouden keeltjes horen

Coco en Mario Magic Agnes Geneva

en zullen het publiek versteld doen staan met hun keuze uit 65 jaar Songfestivalhistorie én hysterie. Na 2 jaar noodgedwongen rust kunnen we de zinderende show dit keer beleven in Bitterzoet aan de Spuistraat. Speciaal voor de gelegenheid is de naam van deze podiumclub veranderd in GlitterZoet!

In 2019 won Pia Vapeur met een Franse inzending uit 1958: Dors mon amour, van André Claveau. Volgens de jury loepzuiver gezongen met veel passie. Ze is er dit jaar natuurlijk weer bij om haar titel te prolongeren. Naast Pia Vapeur hebben nog negen kanjers hun deelname bevestigd: Miss Baksel, Pia Vapeur, MarleneXL, Agnes Geneva, Dolly Wood, Vera den Adel, Haaxfrau, Kiki Boops, Hella Holland en Dora Royale. Al met al een bont en veelbelovend gezelschap: van dragqueen tot travestiet. Uniek in Amsterdam, en Nederland, ja zelfs de Benelux en ver daarbuiten!

Koos van den Berg is de organisator van deze vrolijke drag-versie van het Eurovisie Songfestival. Hij transformeert zelf voor de show in Coco Coquette, de daverende vedette die met de jaren alleen maar slanker en knapper wordt. Samen met co-host Mario Magic verzorgt ze de presentatie: ”Dit zangfestijn is al vele jaren een geweldig succes bij ons enthousiaste publiek.

Van jong tot oud; gay of niet; het maakt niet uit. Het is voor iedereen een leuke, kleurrijke avond vol prachtige songfestivalpareltjes. Het is bijna hetzelfde als het echte Songfestival, maar dan met een knipoog, en dus leuker. Hilarischer krijg je het niet!”.

Ten Contestants hope to win over the audience with their choice from 65 years of Song contest history and hysteria. After 2 years of COVID-restrictions, we can finally see this sparkling show again, this time at Bitterzoet on the Spuistraat. Especially for the occasion, the name of the club will be changed to GlitterZoet! Holland, and Dora Royale. All in all, a colourful and promising group, including drag queens and transvestites. It certainly is a unique event in Amsterdam and the Netherlands. Yes, even in the Benelux and far beyond!

The 2019 edition was won by Pia Vapeur with a French entry from 1958. Dors mon amour, by Adré Claveau. According to the jury, it was flawlessly sung with lots of passion. And she will participate again this year to prolong her title. Koos van den Berg is the organizer of this cheerful drag version of the Eurovision Song Contest. For the contest, he becomes Coco Coquette, the thunderous star who only gets slimmer and more gorgeous over the years. She hosts the contest with co-host Mario Magic.

From young to old and gay or not; it does not matter. It is a fun, colourful evening full of beautiful Eurovision gems for everyone. It is almost the same as the real Eurovision Song Contest, but it takes a very different approach. It doesn’t get any more hilarious than that!”

Koos babbelt verder: “Ze zingen allemaal live, dat maakt deze show zo bijzonder. Het is uniek in de travestie, waar playback meestal de boventoon voert. Ik heb daar niets op tegen hoor, maar geef mij maar pure zang. Dan maar een beetje ernaast, dat geeft niet. Vooral niet als je ‘Email to Berlin’ van Double Date (tekst: Jan Rot) kiest. Daniëlle Blue geeft deze geheel valsgezongen inzending uit de voorronde van 1999 samen met Haaxfrau een nieuwe kans.”

Er gaat een hardnekkig gerucht dat sommige deelnemers voor de zekerheid extra zanglessen hebben genomen. Bij navraag hierover houdt Koos stevig zijn kaken op elkaar. Maar een tipje van de sluier wil hij voor ons dan toch wel oplichten: “Ik verwacht veel van de deelneemster uit Trammelant, Kiki Boops. Ik hoop dat ze “My Impossible Scream’ van Glennis Grace gaat doen.”

Het publiek heeft ook v.l.n.r Coco, Pia & Victoria een stem. Koos: “Kan de zang door de beugel? Heeft de kandidaat de juiste ‘look’? En overtuigt het als geheel? Dat levert punten op. Aan het einde van de avond tellen we de punten met de hand op, dus dat kan niet misgaan. Het winnende lied zal dan, net als bij het Eurovisie Songfestival, nogmaals klinken.”

De deelnemers vertegenwoordigen allemaal een land. Zo zijn er Vulgarije, Sexyland, Travestibet, Norgay, United Queendom, Jurkije, Trammelant en Broek in Waterland. De vakjury bestaat uit de doorgewinterde coryfeeën Lady Charity en Victoria False. EuroSongTravestival zondag 8 mei in Bitterzoet, Spuistraat 2. Koos: “They all sing live, and that’s what makes this show so special. It is unique in transvestism, where playback usually predominates. I don’t mind playback at all, but I do prefer the real thing. and Broek in Waterland. The professional jury consists of seasoned celebrities Lady Charity and Victoria False.

The audience also has a say. Koos: “Is the singing of sufficient quality? Does the candidate wear and have the proper ‘look’? Is it convincing? These things will be rewarded with precious points. After the performances, we will manually count the points, so there is absolutely no fuck

De expositie belooft een Ruim dertig jaar staat Dolly Bellefleur op Wunderkammer in alle kleuren van de de planken en de barricades. Zowel in taal, regenboog te worden. Je kijkt als bezoeker in liedteksten, columns en gedichten als in je ogen uit. beeld, in bijvoorbeeld cartoons, foto’s en muziekclips, toont Dolly zich een tomeloze Om te beginnen is er een ruime selectie te activist die soms aaibaar en dan weer zien van de flamboyante creaties die Tycho venijnig maar altijd stijlvol ten strijde trekt Boeker (Prince Charming) sinds 1989 voor tegen discriminatie, vooroordelen en een verstikkende hokjesgeest. In de overzichtsexpositie Made in Dolland is voor het eerst het werk bijeengebracht dat beauty with brains Bellefleur in nauwe samenwerking met fotografen, vormgevers, grafisch La Bellefleur heeft ontworpen. Van een Putin Protest Dress tot een creatie getiteld The Power of Love, waarin een ode wordt gebracht aan de vele vrienden en collega’s die Bellefleur en Boeker verloren aan de ziekte AIDS. En wat dacht je van een Dolly tassenlijn en eierwarmers in de vorm van Dolly’s haute coiffure (Sacha Wendt), Dolly vereeuwigd als Marlene Dietrich (Erwin Olaf) of een heuse Dolly Tekening van Joost Swarte. De tentoonstelling vormde voor Dolly ook een prachtige aanleiding om vele grafisch ontwerpers, beeldend kunstenaars en (strip) tekenaars te vragen nieuw werk te maken geïnspireerd op thema’s als emancipatie, (on)gelijkheid, diversiteit, inclusiviteit, mannelijkheid/vrouwelijkheid, activisme en protest.

Ik heb persoonlijk bijna mijn arm uit de kom gedraaid bij het apenkooien, moest na de Zomer Shotjes borrel een bizar lange fietstocht maken om hier niet nader te

noemen redenen, en ben de donderdag na de Centurionborrel lichtelijk gestorven op de VU. Vraag me niet waarom op de VU, ik studeer daar niet eens.

Gelukkig waren er ook activiteiten waarbij je minder kans had op chronisch letsel, zoals het speeddaten en het kleien. Het speeddaten was voor zover ik heb gehoord ook een groot succes (ik zat toen in quarantaine) en het kleien was zeker ontzettend leuk. Gecombineerd met het apenkooien was ik weer helemaal terug in m’n basisschooltijd.

Wel grappig: toen kon ik ook al én niet apenkooien, én niet kleien. Dat was nu nog steeds zo. Het voelde weer helemaal vertrouwd, behalve dan misschien dat ik op de basisschool na bovenstaande activiteiten ben ik blij voor de aanwezigen? Ja. Ben ik een klein beetje jaloers? Ook ja. Maar, niet om op te scheppen, ik ben wel heel erg blij met onze zelf-organiserende capaciteiten en het feit dat een drietal volhardende coronaborrelaars gewoon weer een ouderwetse zoom-borrel hadden opgestart. Het was alsof ik weer terug was in 2021: een borrel op zoom, met welgeteld 3 mensen, en een vierde

niet direct aan het bier ging. Toch nog een vorm van ontwikkeling gehad gelukkig.

Ook de overige activiteiten (het rolschaatsen, de disco-verjaardagsborrel) heb ik zelf helaas moeten missen vanwege, je verwacht het niet, corona, maar ook hier heb ik alleen maar gehoord hoe ont-zet-tend leuk het allemaal wel niet was. Zó gezellig, zó leuk, zó sfeervol. Ook hier kwamen de flashbacks naar de basisschool

weer terug: de busreis richting de rolschaatslocatie scheen een hoog schoolreisjegehalte te hebben, gezien iedereen in dezelfde bus zat. Want ja, die ging maar twee keer in het uur. Sorry voor de deelnemers, toen we de activiteit uitzochten had ik me even verkeken op de locatie. Gelukkig werkte het in the end sfeerverhogend. Dus,

The month of February, within A.S.V.Gay also known as ‘the Open Period’, is now behind us. What a month, what a month. Filled to the brim with activities and themed drinks, not all of which were without risk. I personally almost dislocated my arm during the gymnastics/ apenkooien, had to make a bizarrely long bike ride after the Summer Shots borrel for reasons not to be mentioned here, and died a little on the VU the Thursday after the Centurion borrel. case. It felt completely familiar again, except perhaps for the fact that in primary school I didn’t go straight for a beer after the above activities. Fortunately, I thus still had a form of development.

I also had to miss the other activities (roller skating, the disco-birthday borrel) because of, you wouldn’t expect it, corona, but also here I only heard how incredibly nice it all was. So cosy, so nice, so atmospheric. The flashbacks to primary school came back here too: the bus trip to the roller-skating rink seemed to have a high school trip percentage, as everyone was in the same bus. After all, it only went twice an hour. Sorry to the participants, when we were looking for the activity, I had misjudged the location. Fortunately, in the end, it only improved the atmosphere. So, am I happy for the attendees? Yes, I am. Am I a little jealous? Also yes. But, not to brag, I am very happy with our self-organising capacities and the fact that a trio of persistent corona drinkers had simply started up an oldfashioned Zoom drink again. It was as if I was

Fortunately, there were also activities where you had less chance of chronic injury, such as speed dating and the creative with clay activity. As far as I have heard, speed dating was a great success (I was in quarantine at the time) and being creative with clay was definitely a lot of fun. Combined with the gymnastics, I was back in my primary schools days. It’s funny: even then I couldn’t play monkey cage and I couldn’t model clay. That was still the

1) Blijf logisch nadenken. Doe die zelftesten. Ram dat stokje je hersenen in. Blijf thuis wanneer je je ziek voelt. Hoest niet in andere mensen hun gezicht (tenzij ze het verdiend hebben). 2) Hou de termen quarantaine en isolatie niet door elkaar heen. Je zit in quarantaine als je in aanraking bent geweest met iemand die positieve klachten heeft. Je zit in isolatie als je zelf positief bent. Cruciaal verschil lieve mensen, cruciaal verschil. 3) Wees veilig en vergeet vooral niet te genieten van alles nu het weer kan!

It’s still a bit weird: finally everything is possible again, but still every week at least one of my acquaintances is in isolation. That’s just a bit of today’s reality, but let me take this opportunity to act as a moralist for a moment: 1) Keep thinking logically. Do those self-tests. Drive that stick into your brain. Stay home when you feel sick. Don’t cough in other people’s faces (unless they’ve earned it). 2) Don’t mix up the terms quarantine and isolation. You are in quarantine if you have been in contact with someone who has positive symptoms. You are in isolation if you are positive yourself. Crucial difference dear people, crucial difference. 3) Be safe and don’t forget to enjoy everything now that you can again!

Het plan om een (bijna) jaarlijks Europees sportevenement voor homo’s en lesbo’s te organiseren ontstond ruim dertig jaar geleden na de tweede editie van de Gay Games in San Francisco. De bedoeling was om homo’s en lesbo’s te ondersteunen bij hun coming-out en in de rest van de maatschappij meer bewustzijn voor sportende homoseksuelen te creëren. Daarnaast wilden de initiatiefnemers homosportclubs uit heel Europa met elkaar in contact brengen.

De stichting Gay Integration through Sports & Activities Holland (GISAH), later omgedoopt tot Homosport Nederland en nog weer later tot Gay Union Through Sports (GUTS), was de initiatiefnemer van de eerste EuroGames die in Den Haag werden gehouden, toen nog voor ongeveer 300 sporters. GISAH-oprichter Ben Baks wilde eigenlijk de Gay Games van 1994 naar Den Haag halen. Dat bleek niet haalbaar. Daarom besloten de Haagse initiatiefnemers een tweedaags homosportevenement te organiseren, het Sport Unites Festival. Aanvankelijk met drie sporten, later werden dat er meer. In 1992 besloot men de naam te wijzigen in EuroGames.

De eerste homosportclubs waren in Nederland begin jaren 80 ontstaan uit zelfverdediging na rellen tijdens Roze Zaterdag in Amersfoort.

Al in 2018 ontstonden de eerste plannen om het evenement naar Nijmegen te halen. Een aantal mensen organiseerde toen een roze volleybaltoernooi en bedacht dat het goed was hier ook reguliere clubs bij te betrekken. Arianne de Bruin, een van de initiatiefnemers: “Uitgangspunt was dat het mogelijk moet zijn om op een veilige manier te sporten en elkaar te ontmoeten. We doen al veel om de zichtbaarheid, acceptatie en tolerantie te vergroten maar we zijn er nog niet. EuroGames kunnen daaraan bijdragen. Daarbij willen we nadrukkelijk ook lhbti+-sporters en -clubs verbinden met niet-roze sporters en clubs.”

Het project-team

Sandwiched between Nijmegen’s Four Day Walking Event and the Amsterdam Pride Week is the 19th edition of the EuroGames, the European counterpart of the Gay Games and the late World OutGames. The EuroGames will be organized in Nijmegen from July 27-30, 2022. Straight people are also more than welcome. In 2018, the first plans to bring the event to Nijmegen came about. In that year, a number sporting event for gays and lesbians arose more than thirty years ago after the second edition of the Gay Games in San Francisco. The intention was to support gays and lesbians in their coming-out and to create more awareness in the rest of society for homosexuals who were active in sports. In addition to this, the initiators wanted to bring gay sports clubs from all over Europe into contact with each other. The Gay Integration through Sports & Activities Holland (GISAH) foundation, later renamed Homosport Nederland and later still Gay Union Through Sports (GUTS), was the initiator of the first EuroGames that were held in The Hague, with about 300 athletes. GISAH founder Ben Baks actually wanted to bring the 1994 Gay Games to The Hague. Unfortunately, that was not in the cards, but the initiators then decided to organize a two-day gay sporting event, the Sport Unites Festival. They started with three featured sports, but other sports were added over time. In 1992 it was decided to change the name to EuroGames. The first gay sports clubs in the Netherlands

of people organized a LGBT volleyball tournament and thought it would be a good idea to involve regular clubs as well. One of the initiators Arianne de Bruin: “The basic principle was that it should be possible to practise sports and meet each other in a safe environment. A lot is been done to increase visibility, acceptance and tolerance, but we are not there yet. The EuroGames can contribute to that. We also emphatically want to connect LGBTI+ athletes and clubs with non-gay athletes and clubs.” The plan to organize an (almost) annual European

Baks richtte in 1989 ook de European Gay and Lesbian Sport Federation (EGLSF) op, een club die als doel heeft het stimuleren van sportbeoefening onder homo’s en lesbo’s en het tegengaan van discriminatie van deze groep, in heel Europa. Vanaf 1994 kwamen de EuroGames onder de vleugels van EGLSF.

Tot voor kort vonden die steeds plaats in de jaren dat er geen Gay Games of World OutGames zijn. Per saldo komt het er meestal op neer dat er EuroGames worden gehouden in Gay

Games-loze jaren, want de World OutGames zijn na vier edities en jarenlang onderling gekissebis en geruzie met de Federation of Gay Games sowieso alweer ter ziele.

Vier keer eerder zijn de EuroGames in Nederland georganiseerd: in 1992 en 1993 in Den Haag, daarna in 2005 in Utrecht en in 2011 in Rotterdam. In Den Haag waren de deelnemersaantallen nog bescheiden, maar in Utrecht deden al bijna 3000 sporters mee en in Rotterdam namen zelfs zo’n 4000 sporters deel aan 22 sporten. In Nijmegen mikken ze eind juli op ongeveer 2500 deelnemers voor 19 sporten. De inschrijvingen komen inmiddels goed op stoom, na een trage start mede door langdurige onzekerheid vanwege de coronapandemie en de oorlog in Oekraïne. Henk Beerten, voorzitter van het Nijmeegse organisatiecomité, legt uit hoe de kandidatuur van Nijmegen tot stand kwam:

“Bas van den Meerendonk, een enthousiast hockeyer, die naar verschillende EuroGames was geweest, heeft samen met Gaysport Nijmegen gekeken of er mensen bereid waren hem te helpen een bidbook op te stellen. Er is gekeken of er support en geld voor was. Het paste in het beleid van de EGLSF om ook kleinere steden de kans te geven een dergelijk evenement te organiseren.” Het bidbook werd opgesteld, en een jaar later werd de stad aan de Waal op het congres van EGLSF in Boedapest aangewezen als gaststad voor de negentiende editie van de EuroGames. De definitieve ‘go’ van de gemeente Nijmegen volgde in juni 2021.

Het enthousiasme, niet alleen bij het Nijmeegse stadsbestuur, maar ook van de Nijmeegse sportclubs, was groot. Aanvankelijk stonden er negen sporten op het programma, maar gaandeweg meldden zich steeds meer Nijmeegse clubs aan om competities in hun tak van sport te organiseren. En nu telt het programma maar liefst 19 sporten. Behalve voor sporten als roeien en rugby kun je je ook inschrijven voor ballroom dancing of bridge, voor pickleball of petanque. Je hoeft niet tot de top in jouw

These riots are the reason why the Amsterdam sports club Tijgertje was founded, the first gay sports club in the Netherlands. More gay sports clubs followed, also outside of Amsterdam. The GISAH became the advocate of all those gay athletes. Baks also founded the European Gay and Lesbian Sport Federation (EGLSF) in 1989, whose aim was to promote sports among gays and lesbians and to combat discrimination throughout Europe. From 1994 onwards, the EuroGames came under the wings of EGLSF. Until recently, these events always took place in the years without Gay Games or World OutGames. After four editions and years of bickering and arguing with the Federation of Gay Games, the World OutGames ceased to exist. The EuroGames were organized in the Netherlands four times: in 1992 and 1993 (The Hague), then in 2005 (Utrecht) and in 2011 (Rotterdam). In 1992, the number of participants was still modest, but in Utrecht the number rose to almost 3,000 athletes. The Rotterdam edition saw some 4,000 athletes in 22 different sports participate. The upcoming Nijmegen edition is aiming for about 2,500 participants in 19 sports. The number of registrations is now gaining momentum after a slow start. This is partly due to long-term COVID-19 uncertainty and the war in Ukraine. Henk Beerten, chairman of the Nijmegen organizing committee, explains how Nijmegen’s candidacy came about: “Bas van den Meerendonk, an enthusiastic hockey player who had participated in several EuroGames, explored the possibilities of a bid book with Gaysport Nijmegen. They first checked whether there was enough support and funding for such a bid. It was in line with the EGLSF’s policy to give smaller cities the opportunity to organize these events as well.” The bid book was drawn up, and a year later Nijmegen was designated as the host city for the 19th edition of the EuroGames at the EGLSF congress in Budapest. The final goahead of the municipality of Nijmegen followed in June 2021. The Nijmegen municipality and local sports

Vraag aan Henk Beerten (69) wat Nijmegen zo geschikt maakt voor het houden van de EuroGames 2022 en er volgt een waterval aan historische feiten en achtergronden om het Nijmeegse gay gehalte mee te illustreren. “Nijmegen heeft een lange geschiedenis van een erg actieve homobeweging. In 1972 al werd een afdeling van het COC opgericht.” Het Nijmeegse COC stond aan de basis van de Roze Loper, een keurmerk voor veiligheid voor lhbti+’ers in zorg- en welzijnsinstellingen, maar ook van SchoolsOut, dat voorlichting geeft op scholen en dat leidde tot allerlei gay/ straight samenwerkingsverbanden.

Halverwege de jaren 70 werden de Rooie Flikkers in Nijmegen actief, een militante actiegroep die, uitgerust met roze driehoeken en make-up, voor het eerst luidruchtig van zich liet horen toen een psycholoog op de pabo voorlichting wilde geven over de genezing van homoseksuelen. De Rooie Flikkers wisten de bijeenkomst te verstoren, maar werden wel gearresteerd. Nijmegen was ook de eerste gemeente waar politieke partijen een Roze Stembusakkoord sloten, waarbij afspraken worden gemaakt over het veilig maken van de stad voor lhbti+’ers. Daarin werd toen al overeengekomen een groot evenement naar de stad te halen. Dat het niet alleen om politiek verantwoorde activiteiten gaat die Nijmegen definiëren als Regenboogstad, benadrukt Beerten door te wijzen op Tedje en de Flikkers, een Nijmeegse punkband, die tussen 1977 en 1980 bekend stond vanwege zijn provocerende optredens. En op Café Dapper, voor homo’s met een verstandelijke beperking. “En we hebben de Kiss Kiss Club. Dat is een groot tweemaandelijks feest in poppodium Doornroosje.”

Beerten is een ervaren bestuurder. Hij was wethouder cultuur, mobiliteit en onderwijs in Nijmegen, lid van het partijbestuur van D66 en voorzitter van het COC, eerst in Nijmegen en daarna landelijk. “De wethouder wilde heel graag dat ik EuroGamesvoorzitter zou worden. Ik heb gezegd ‘ik wil dat wel doen maar dan wil ik wel kijken met wie’. Want het moet ook leuk zijn. Ik had toen nog geen idee hoeveel tijd en energie er in zou gaan zitten.”

Samen met Peter van Loon, oudvoorzitter van COC Nijmegen, en Anna van der Vleuten, wetenschapper aan de Radboud Universiteit op het gebied van genderdiversiteit, vormt Beerten de kern van

clubs were enthusiastic. Initially, there were nine sports on the programme, but gradually more and more Nijmegen clubs signed up to organize competitions in their sport. At the moment, the programme features 19 sports such as soccer, rowing and rugby. But you can also register for ballroom dancing, bridge, pickleball or petanque. You don’t have to be best: the EuroGames wants to present itself as an opportunity to meet people and to be able to practise sports in total freedom, in order to be who you are. This certainly applies to participants who often cannot express their sexual orientation in their own country. Ask Henk Beerten (69) what makes Nijmegen so suitable for hosting the EuroGames 2022, and many historical facts and much background information follows to illustrate Nijmegen’s gay history. “Nijmegen has a long history of very active gay movements. A local branch of the gay interest organisation COC was set up here as early as 1972.” The Nijmegen COC was behind the Roze Loper, a quality mark for safety for LGBTI+ people in care and welfare institutions, and SchoolsOut, which provides LGTBI education to schools, leading to all kinds of gay/straight alliances. In the mid-seventies, the Rooie Flikkers in Nijmegen became active, a militant action group that, equipped with pink triangles and make-up, made its first loud noise when a psychologist at a teacher training college wanted to give out information on conversion therapy. The Rooie Flikkers managed to disrupt the meeting, but were arrested. Nijmegen was also the first municipality where political parties came to a Pink Ballot Box Agreement, in which they agreed on policy changes in order to make the city safe for LGBTI+ people and bring a major event to the city. Beerten emphasizes that “politics wasn’t the only thing that define Nijmegen as a

het organisatiecomité. Beerten verwacht niet dat corona nog roet in het eten zal gooien nu per eind maart alle maatregelen afgeschaft zijn. Anders ligt dat komt, kan er een situatie ontstaan waarbij het vinden van voldoende accommodatie wel heel moeilijk wordt.” Vooralsnog gaat Beerten ervan uit dat de EuroGames gewoon doorgang zullen vinden, ondanks de precaire situatie in de wereld. Volgens Beerten is het leuk om aan wedstrijden mee te doen. Dat geldt ook voor de EuroGames. “Het is een feestje. Sporten in een veilige omgeving. Ik herinner me de eerste keer dat ik naar zoiets toeging, de Gay Games in Amsterdam in 1998. Je laven aan het dominant zijn, het met elkaar zijn, de feestjes, de ontspanning. Dat vond ik geweldig.”

Projectmanager Joost van Wijngaarden vertelt dat de openingsceremonie op 27 juli plaatsvindt op de Waalkade: “Zowel de openings- als de sluitingsceremonie wordt daar gehouden, met de Waal ernaast en de Waalbrug op de achtergrond. Dat levert schitterende beelden op.” Er is niet overwogen om de opening in het Goffertstadion te organiseren: “We vinden het belangrijk dat die ceremonies juist op een goed zichtbare plek plaatsvinden. In het openbaar. Als je dit in het Goffertstadion doet, dan baken je het echt weer af van de rest van Nijmegen.” En lachend: “Zit je weer met z’n allen in een grote kast.” Wat er gaat gebeuren tijdens de ceremonies houdt Van Wijngaarden nog voor zich: “De contracten zijn nog niet getekend.”

Van Wijngaarden vindt het toernooi geslaagd ‘als we op het thematische niveau wat bereiken’. “Een goed toernooi organiseren kunnen we wel. Maar zorgen dat alle deelnemende sportverenigingen dit onderwerp ook op de agenda zetten en houden en daar gesprekken over voeren binnen de vereniging, dat is minstens zo belangrijk.”

Ook volgens Henk Beerten zijn de EuroGames pas succesvol als ze op termijn wat opleveren, in bestuurdersjargon: de legacy, de EuroGames als opmaat naar meer aandacht voor inclusiviteit in de sport: “Daar is nog een wereld te winnen. De gemeente wil daar meer werk van maken. Met sportbesturen tot afspraken komen, hoe ga je om met scheldkanonnades, wat kun je doen om elftalbegeleiders te helpen om te gaan met coming-outsituaties. Of het inschatten van de positie van lhbti’ers in jouw vereniging. Daar kan nog veel in gebeuren. Ik denk dat een evenement als de EuroGames voor Nijmegen en omgeving daarin een impuls kan zijn.” Om daar aan toe te voegen: “Maar van belang is vooral dat het leuk feestje wordt.”

I said “I’m certainly interested, but it depends on with whom”. It has to be a certain amount of fun as well. At the time I had no idea how much time and energy it would take.” Peter van Loon, a former chairman of COC Nijmegen, and Anna van der Vleuten, a scientist at Radboud University in the field of gender diversity, and Beertens form the nucleus of the organizing committee. Beerten does not expect that COVID will queer the pitch for us, as all measures have been abolished now. The situation is different with the war in Ukraine. “If that war escalates further, you could get a situation where it’s no longer appropriate to organize something like the EuroGames. Also, if the number of refugees gets even higher, a situation may arise in which finding sufficient accommodation will become very difficult indeed.” For the time being, Beerten assumes that the EuroGames will continue as planned, notwithstanding the precarious situation the world finds itself in now. According to Beerten, it is fun to participate in competitions, and certainly in the EuroGames.” “It’s a blast”. I remember the first time I went to a similar event, the Gay Games in Amsterdam in 1998. I loved us all being together in one place, the

is EuroGames-ambassadeur roeien. “Toen ik roeide, vond ik het best moeilijk om uit de kast te komen, maar bleek mijn homoseksualiteit geen groot probleem. Misschien daarom realiseerde ik mij pas bij de Gay Games in Amsterdam hoe ongelofelijk fijn het is te sporten met mensen waarin je je herkent.”

It was marvellous.” Project manager Joost van Wijngaarden explains that the opening ceremony will take place on July 27 on the Waalkade: “Both the opening and closing ceremonies will be held there, with the bridge over the river Waal in the background. That assuredly will be the backdrop of some beautiful pictures.” The Goffert Stadium was not considered for the opening: “We think it is important that these ceremonies are held in a clearly visible place. In public. If you use the Goffert Stadium for this, you really set it apart from the rest of Nijmegen.” Smiling: “We do not want to be in a huge closet again.” What exactly will happen during the ceremonies, Van Wijngaarden is still keeping to himself: “The contracts have not yet been signed.”

Van Wijngaarden considers the Games a success “if we achieve something at the thematic level. We know how to organise a tournament, but that is not enough. We need to ensure that all participating sports associations also put and keep this topic on the agenda and have debates about it within the association, that is at least as important.”

According to Henk Beerten, the EuroGames are only successful if they yield something in the long run, in administrator jargon: the legacy, the EuroGames as a prelude to more attention for inclusiveness in sport: “There is still a world to gain in that respect. The municipality wants to do more with the subject. Reaching agreements with sports boards, how to deal with floods of abuse, what you can do to help team coaches deal with coming-out situations. Or assessing the position of LGBT people in your association. Those are the areas in which things need to improve. I think an event like the EuroGames can give an impulse to this conversation for Nijmegen and its surrounding area.” He adds: “But the most important thing is that it will be fun.”
