Vallarta's gay scene includes a couple dozen gay clubs and bars and 3 beach clubs that run from the gay beach area north to just across the river.

The gay beach at Playa los Muertos is, of course, the busiest gay spot during the day, and the large crowd spreads out among 3 beach clubs that cater to the gay market. Originally there was the Blue Chairs but the crowd always was so big that Ritmos, generally known as the green chairs, was always a part of the gay beach area, too. Now we have Club Lido which offers more upscale service with an European flair.

Sunsets can be spectacular in Vallarta and a gay cocktail hour gathering can be found viewing the sunset each evening from the rooftop of Blue Chairs. At the Blue Sunset Bar you'll find a celebratory group enjoying the wonderful view above the beach and the daily live entertainment of stripper and drag shows, gay bingo, and karaoke!

Historically, one of the original gay hangouts was at the small hotel where Liz Taylor would house her overflow Hollywood guests. El Nido bar is still there, and a wonderful place at sunset.

Not into sunset watching? Things are usually peaking over at the courtyard pool area of the Vallarta Cora, where it isn't unusual for the pool to look like a 50 man hot tub.

Martini Bar and Bistro, the original martini bar in PV, is a popular meeting place surrounded by ambience. Garbo, a quieter and intimate place usually featuring background jazz music in a nice art deco setting. With a great view from above Olas Altas is the Crow’s Nest at The Swedes. Sama is a fabulous sidewalk martini lounge with great music all night. The Palm - a show bar with great attractions of visiting performers. Also on Olas Altas, is the bar No Borders - a cowboy themed place.

The main cluster of gay bars today is an outgrowth of city planning decisions made in the early 1990’s. They created a Cabaret Zone, a four block square area where the city fathers wanted the late night entertainment, with its accompanying noise, to be corralled. Today it is home to many of our gay bars and clubs. In this zone you’ll find: Los Amigos - a completely unpretentious gay cantina where you'll find Arturo is busily tending bar, La Noche - a classy cosmopolitan lounge now greatly expanded, Reinas - (which means queens!) is a smaller cantina, popular with locals and tourists, where you might meet your prince! Wet Dreams - the place where the wet shows are special, and Frida's - an authentic Mexican cantina popular with locals and tourists day and night.

The legendary Club Paco Paco led the way as the first gay place in the Cabaret Zone but is now gone. The related club Paco’s Ranch carries on in a new location across the street, where they maintain their tradition of Mexican drag shows and great prices.

CC Slaughters PV - has dancing continuously as the music never stops and a separate lounge that opens early. Club Mañana located nearby, has returned this season with its usual array of shows and events. Los Equipales - an authentic Mexican Botanero that is very popular very late at night.

Outside the Cabaret Zone but within easy walking distance are Chill Out Lounge - a delightful women owned space that completely defies categorization, Antropology - an upscale nude male“Strip Club” with continuous eye candy.

La escena gay en Vallarta incluye más de veinte clubes y bares gay, y 3 clubes de playa, en un área que va desde la playa gay al sur hasta pasando el río al norte.

La playa gay en Los Muertos es, indudablemente, el punto gay más concurrido durante el día y la multitud se distribuye entre los 3 clubes de playa que atienden el mercado gay. Reinas es una cantina más pequeña, muy concurrida por locales y turistas, ¡donde quizás encuentres a tu príncipe! Wet Dreams, dónde el espectáculo húmedo es especial, y Frida's, auténtica cantina mexicana popular entre locales y turistas por igual de día y de noche.

Puerto Vallarta a privileged nature venue

Puerto Vallarta is located on Banderas Bay, a part of the Mexican Pacific Riviera. This bay is the largest in Mexico, the second largest in North America and one of the deepest in the world. Its unique location, geological setting and ocean currents provide unique features that make our bay a privileged destination with a tropical to subtropical climate.

Banderas Bay is considered the southernmost region of the immense Sea of Cortez that separates Baja California from the rest of Mexico. The bay’s climate is mainly regulated by the sea surface temperature and it is particularly influenced by two major opposing ocean currents. The Mexican Coastal Current with warm water from southwestern Mexico and the California Current which brings cooler temperate water from the Northwest Pacific Coast of America. These currents clash here and that is why the bay’s southern cape is called Cabo Corrientes (Cape Currents). Flowing with different intensities during the different seasons of the year, these currents provide a particular pattern of oceanographical conditions which allows a variety of marine animals to call this bay home at least a part of the year.

A couple of these species have become recognized worldwide as natural attractions of Puerto Vallarta, attracting tourists who particularly plan their visit around these seasonal spectaculars. Humpback whales arrive in the late fall and stay through the winter for breeding and calving purposes. Olive Ridley turtles lay their eggs on the beaches around the bay during the summer months.

At the mouth of the bay outcrops the Marietas Islands. These low islands have great dive sites and provide amazing birdwatching opportunities. They are considered the southernmost islands of the Sea of Cortez and have been declared a bird sanctuary due to the abundance and variety of marine birds that inhabit this place such as the Blue-footed and Brown Booby birds, a variety of Terns, Magnificent Frigate birds, different kinds of Gulls, Brown Pelicans and Tropicbirds.

Puerto Vallarta se localiza en la Bahía de Banderas, dentro de la rivera del Pacífico mexicano. Es la segunda bahía más grande de Norteamérica y una de las más profundas del mundo. Su ubicación, entorno geológico y las corrientes marinas que predominan brindan características únicas que hacen nuestra bahía un destino privilegiado con un clima tropical a subtropical.

Bahía de Banderas es considerada la región más sureña del inmenso Mar de Cortez, el cual separa Baja Clifornia del resto de México. El clima de la bahía está regulado principalmente por la temperatura superficial del mar y está a su vez influenciada por dos corrientes marinas que fluyen en direcciones opuestas. La Corriente Costera Occidental Mexicana que trae aguas cálidas del suroeste de México y la Corriente de California que trae aguas templadas y más frias de la costa del Oeste de Estados Unido y Canadá. Estas dos corrientes convergen en frente de Bahía de Banderas y es por ello que su extremo sur es llamado Cabo Corrientes. Fluyendo con intensidades diferentes a largo del año estas corrientes brindan patrones particulares de condiciones oceanográficas que permiten que una variedad de animales marinos la elijan como su hogar por lo menos una parte del año.

Algunas de estas especies han sido reconocidas mundialmente como atractivos naturales de Puerto Vallarta el cual atrae turistas que planean su visita de acuerdo a su temporalidad. Las ballenas Jorobadas llegan en Otoño tardío y permanecen por los meses de invierno para reproducirse y tener a sus crías. La tortuga Golfina desova en las playas de la bahía durante los meses de verano, durante la época de lluvias. (please add: During the rainy season).

En la boca de la bahía afloran las Islas Marietas. Estas islas brindan excelentes sitios para la práctica del buceo y la observación de aves. Son consideradas las islas más al sur del Mar de Cortez y han sido declaradas santuario de aves debido a la abudancia y variedad de aves que habitas este sitio como el Sula Pies Azules y el Sula café, una variedad de Golondrinas marinas, Fragatas magníficas, Gaviotas, Pelícanos y Rabijuncos.

If you want to see the real Mexico, consider a day off the beach! Adventure awaits at the Vallarta Botanical Gardens which opened its gates just seven years ago.

Since then it has grown to become one of Puerto Vallarta's most fabulous “must see” tourist attractions. The Gardens are located in the mountains at an elevation of 1,300 feet above sea level where you will find a rejuvenating and much cooler micro-climate that is always a delightful surprise to Garden visitors.

The Gardens are a living museum showcasing exceptional examples of the abundant natural diversity of the region. As you enter the Gardens, look for a sign that directs you to the swinging bridge. Follow the iron handrail and lead yourself through a pristine swath of oldgrowth tropical forest in its full exuberant splendor. Along this trail one will encounter the Chocolate, Coffee and Vanilla Garden where living examples of each of these plants can be viewed growing in the shadows of giant forest trees.

Don’t miss the Holstein Conservatory of Mexican Orchids. In this remarkable conservatory, one can see many native Mexican orchids in bloom, plus collections of carnivorous plants, rare ferns, and other botanical curiosities.

The mountains are a bird watcher's delight with many species of native birds easily seen from the pathways. In the morning and again in the evening, squawking groups of Lilac-Crowned Amazon Parrots are active, wheeling through the skies above.

Kingfishers ply the waters for tadpoles and minnows in the sparkling Los Horcones River. The emerald waters of the Los Horcones River also provide excellent swimming and are famous throughout the region for their rejuvenating powers, so don’t forget to bring your swimsuit and a towel!

The centerpiece of the Botanical Gardens is the Visitor Center which is also the location of the celebrated Hacienda de Oro Restaurant & Bar. Ranch Style Mexican food and homemade gourmet pizzas in a wood-burning brick oven are famous specialties. Some of the most popular cocktails served at the Gardens’ bar include their Vanilla Bean Mojitos and Golden Cadillac Margaritas.

Puerto Vallarta is known for embracing the arts, and has become a very trendy spot for art lovers over the years. Since 1998, an array of galleries come together to host the ArtWalk. This year there are more galleries participating. ArtWalk is a self guided tour, held on Wednesday evenings, that is free to the public and includes refreshments. The beauty of this is that you get to stroll the galleries at your own pace, perhaps enjoying a glass of wine and soaking up the culture and colors of inspiration that Vallarta has bestowed upon these artists and their work.

The participating galleries present art in a multitude of different media including sculpture, paintings, fine ceramics, and unique jewelry to name a few. It all started back in the 60's, when Puerto Vallarta was experiencing it's initial heyday. A little film called Night of the Iguana was being filmed on the south side, which marked the arrival of Liz Taylor, Richard Burton and Ava Gardner. This sleepy fishing village was suddenly attracting filmmakers, artists, sculptors, and the like. By the 1980s the development boom hit, lasting through the 90's, igniting the growth of the art scene which continues to flourish and evolve. Historic Old Town served as the picturesque background supporting local, national, and international talent. The thriving and vibrant art culture is reflected today in the myriad of sculptures, galleries, and exhibits bestowed on the city every year.

Both the national and international influx is resonated in the wide variety of media and styles exhibited throughout the galleries and sculptures adorning the city.

You can delight in anything from traditional Huichol bead work, Mexican dance masks, and historical Indian tribal art, to contemporary oils, bronze sculptures, and expressionistic mixed media. Strolling in and out of the galleries of Old Town, or down the idyllic Malecon, you will be immersed in a multitude of beauty, color and vibrancy of world-renowned artists who choose Vallarta as their grandstand.

Please do not scream and run away. Today's topic is “Taco Stands", Mexico's ubiquitous street food. Designed as a method to get a good, healthy, tasty, fast and reasonable meal or snack, it is found all over much of Latin America and has made vast inroads into Hispanic communities elsewhere.

After trudging along the many cobblestone byways far from the beaten path, jumping from high curbs, dodging speeding buses, one reaches the conclusion that this PV Bay Area plays host to at least 500 taco stands, some having been passed from one generation to the next. Also, I learned from an article published years ago that for the best and freshest food, dine where there is at least one dog nearby. These street denizens may be very hungry but seem to be the leading critics, so do not doubt their wisdom, let alone their cultivated taste buds. Or, pick the stand where the wait is three people deep, all patiently waiting while the tortillas are hand pressed, meats quickly grilled and choices topped with green peppers, onions and maybe cilantro. Then, one heads to the salsas and condiments, where a range of hotness is offered in addition to pickled jalapeĂąo, lettuce, tomato, maybe carrot and creamy avocado sauce. Scoop and slather but grab a generous handful of napkins to mop the drips before your shirt becomes the colors of the Mexican flag.

The employee handling the money must not be the cook. Disposable plastic gloves and light hair net signal a genuine concern for hygiene. Plastic plates may be reused often once the plastic bag covering is discarded and replaced.

Now the fun begins. OK, you may have to stand and lean against a tree or wall since the 5 or so seats are occupied, or package up 'to go" back to a residence. But, if you have not sampled tacos al pastor or a chorizo burrito, a glorious treat awaits. While some stands offer an array of choice, others stick to specialties as deep fried shrimp taco, ceviche tostada or topped grilled potato.

No se me vaya a espantar y salir huyendo. El tema de hoy son los "Puestos de Tacos", omnipresente comida callejera mexicana. Los tacos, un alimento bueno, saludable, sabroso y económico, se encuentran por todo latinoamérica y ya han penetrado muchas comunidades hispanas en otros lares.

Tras navegar las muchas calles empedradas lejos de lo trillado, brincando altas aceras y evitando raudos autobuses, se llega a la conclusión de que hay cuando menos 500 puestos de tacos en Puerto Vallarta, algunos heredados de generación en generación. También aprendí en un artículo publicado hace años que para saborear los mejores y más frescos, hay que buscar puestos en donde haya cuando menos un perro cerca. Estos habitantes de las calles pueden estar muy hambrientos, pero parecen ser los críticos más exigentes, no ponga usted en duda sus conocimientos gastronómicos ni sus afinados paladares.

También puede escoger un puesto en donde haya gente esperando pacientemente mientras las tortillas son hechas a mano, las carnes rápidamente asadas y su selección es cubierta de chiles verdes, cebolla y, quizás, cilantro.

Después vienen los condimentos, una variedad de salsas de muy picantes a ligeras, además de rajas de chiles encurtidos y lechuga, jitomate, tal vez zanahorias y guacamole cremoso están a su disposición. Sírvase con confianza, pero tome un puñado de servilletas porque si no su camisa quedará con los colores de la bandera mexicana.

El dependiente a cargo del dinero no debe ser el cocinero. Guantes desechables de plástico y redes para el cabello son sinónimo de atención a la higiene. Platos de plástico envueltos en bolsas desechables pueden ser utilizados varias veces sin lavarse, cambiando la bolsa que los cubre cada vez, claro.

Ahora empieza la diversión. Bueno, quizás tenga que comer de pie, recargado en un árbol porque los únicos cinco bancos están ocupados, o pedir sus tacos para llevar; pero si nunca ha probado los tacos al pastor o burritos de chorizo, una auténtica delicia lo espera. En algunos puestos hay una gran variedad de donde escoger, mientras que otros se especializan en tacos de camarón frito, tostadas de ceviche o papás rellenas a la plancha.

Puerto Vallarta Medical Tourism Comes to PV

Thirty years ago the idea of going on vacation to undergo major surgery would have struck most people as bizarre. But today medical tourism has become a growth industry, with cities and countries across the globe competing for U.S., Canadian and European travelers seeking to find both less expensive medical or dental care and a pleasant environment in which to recuperate.

For gay men and lesbians, Puerto Vallarta has become the ideal option, an extremely gay-friendly beach resort with highly qualified medical professionals, state-of-theart equipment and facilities, and costs that typically run one-third to two-thirds less than you would pay for the identical procedures at home.

While medical tourism tends to encompass procedures that aren’t covered by standard health insurance, especially cosmetic surgery, weight reduction surgery, and dental work, an increasing number of people are electing to come to Vallarta for more standard medical procedures, partly because of significantly lower cost, even with insurance, but also because of superior and more caring service.

For example, a former San Franciscan who retired to Puerto Vallarta was recently diagnosed with a hernia during a trip back to California. The diagnosis alone cost him $2,500. Ironically, he paid the same amount in Puerto Vallarta to have the hernia repaired, including an overnight stay in a private room at one of the city’s premier hospitals, attendance by two eminently qualified surgeons, and six follow-up visits to ensure he was healing properly.

“I couldn’t believe the quality of care,” he says. “I received far more attention than I’ve ever received in the U.S., and both doctors spent a lot of time with me. It wasn’t just a quick 5-minute in-and-out visit. What’s more,” he adds, “everyone - doctors, nurses, technicians was extremely kind and warm.” Equally important was the fact that all personnel were completely accepting of his relationship with his partner of 35 years, even allowing his partner to spend the night with him if they so

chose. “There was no discrimination. Nada,” he emphasizes.

Unlike the typical 400-room hospitals in the U.S. and Canada, hospitals in Puerto Vallarta have at most a few dozen rooms, the majority of them private. All are spotlessly clean and comfortable, and the newest hospitals have rooms that rival those of a top-tier hotel.

Yet rates rarely exceed the equivalent of $100 a day and typically are closer to $60 or $70. In addition, the ratio of nurses to patients is two to three times that of the beststaffed facilities north of the border.

But best of all, both before and after treatment, you have the option of staying at one of Puerto Vallarta’s many gay hotels and guest houses or renting a beachfront or view residence through any of several gay-owned or gay-friendly rental agencies. And what better way to recuperate than sitting by the pool or lounging on one of the gay beaches, followed by a visit to the city’s many fine restaurants, cafes, bars and clubs?
